Abstract:Numerous works also suggested that mantle plumes or mantle upwellings associated with LLSVPs in a degree-2 mantle state play a major role in driving the break-up of a supercontinent. However, subduction and mantle downwelling may play an increasing role in the leadup to the assembly of the next supercontinent. Anderson (1994) noticed that continents tend to gather at mantle downwelling zones, which was later developed into the hypothesis of orthoversion assembly of supercontinents by Mitchell (2012). Zhong et al. (2007) conceptualised the assembly of supercontinents through the merger or absorption of mantle downwellings, leading to the assembly of supercontinents over a superdownwelling in a degree-1 mantle. Here we present a revised global paleogeographic reconstruction featuring an extroversion assembly of Pangea (i.e. through the closure of the Mirovoi superocean) over a pre-existing yet dynamic mantle downwelling zone (Li et al., 2019). In particular, we show that the Paleozoic world was dominated by two major subduction (dowelling) cells, one associated with the newly assembled Gondwana, and the other associated with the assembly of Laurasia. The two cells gradually merged together by the Carboniferous time, forming the supercontinent Pangea over a mantle superdownwelling (Zhang et al., 2010). Remnants of Earth's Oldest Continental Crust Formed by Subduction

Abstract:Eoarchean (3.6 – 4.0 Ga) tonalite – trondhjemite – granodiorite (TTG) are the major component of Earth's oldest persevered continental crust, thereby holding the key to understanding how continental crust originated and when plate tectonics started in the early Earth. TTGs are mostly generated by partial melting of hydrated mafic rocks at different depths (e.g., Moyen and Martin, 2012), but whether this requires subduction remains enigmatic (e.g., Palin et al., 2016). Recent studies show that most early Archean TTGs formed at relatively low pressures (≤1.5 GPa) and do not require subduction (e.g., Johnson et al., 2017). We have identified a suite of Eoarchean tonalitic gneisses dated at ∼3.7 Ga from the Tarim Craton, northwestern China (Ge et al., 2018). These rocks are probably the oldest high‐pressure TTGs so far documented worldwide. Thermodynamic and trace element modelling demonstrates that the parent magma may have been generated by water‐fluxed partial melting of moderately enriched arc‐like basalts at 1.8–1.9 GPa and 800–830 °C, indicating an apparent geothermal gradient (400–450°C GPa ‐1) typical for hot subduction zones. They also locally record geochemical evidence for magma interaction with a mantle wedge. Accordingly, we propose that these high‐pressure TTGs were generated by partial melting of a subducted proto‐arc during arc accretion. Our model implies that modern‐style plate tectonics was operative, at least locally, at ∼3.7 Ga and was responsible for generating some of the oldest continental nuclei.
Earth’s Early Continental Crust Formed from Wet and Oxidizing Arc Magmas

Abstract:Formation of continental crust has shaped the surface and interior of our planet and generated the land and mineral resources on which we rely. However, how the early continental crust of Earth formed is still debated 1 – 7 . Modern continental crust is largely formed from wet and oxidizing arc magmas at subduction zones, in which oceanic lithosphere and water recycle into the mantle 8 – 10 . The magmatic H 2 O content and redox state of ancient rocks that constitute the early continental crust, however, are difficult to quantify owing to ubiquitous metamorphism. Here we combine two zircon oxybarometers 11 , 12 to simultaneously determine magmatic oxygen fugacity ( f O 2 ) and H 2 O content of Archaean (4.0–2.5 billion years ago) granitoids that dominate the early continental crust. We show that most Archaean granitoid magmas were ≥1 log unit more oxidizing than Archaean ambient mantle-derived magmas 13 , 14 and had high magmatic H 2 O contents (6–10 wt%) and high H 2 O/Ce ratios (>1,000), similar to modern arc magmas. We find that magmatic f O 2 , H 2 O contents and H 2 O/Ce ratios of Archaean granitoids positively correlate with depth of magma formation, requiring transport of large amounts of H 2 O to the lower crust and mantle. These observations can be readily explained by subduction but are difficult to reconcile with non-subduction models of crustal formation 3 – 7 . We note an increase in magmatic f O 2 and H 2 O content between 4.0 and 3.6 billion years ago, probably indicating the onset of subduction during this period.

Abstract:Zircon trace element geochemistry has become an increasingly popular tool to track crustal evolution through time. This has been especially important in early-Earth settings where most of the crust has been lost, but in some fortuitous instances detrital zircons derived from that lost crust have been preserved in younger sediments. To study the formation and geochemical evolution of continental crust from the Hadean to the Paleoarchean, the 3.6 to 3.2 Ga Barberton Greenstone Belt in southern Africa is an excellent target due to its outstanding preservation and presence of detrital zircons that span almost a billion years. Here, we use trace elements, in combination with hafnium and oxygen isotopes, of 3.65 to 3.22 Ga detrital and tuffaceous zircons of the Moodies and Fig Tree groups and compare their geochemistry to previously studied 4.2 to 3.3 Ga detrital zircons from the Green Sandstone Bed of the Onverwacht Group. The major detrital zircon age clusters in the former at 3.55 Ga, 3.46 Ga, and 3.26–3.23 Ga overlap with episodes of TTG emplacement and felsic volcanism in the Barberton area, suggesting a local provenance. In contrast, age clusters at 3.65 Ga and 3.29 Ga of the Moodies and Fig Tree groups as well as 4.2 to 3.3 Ga detrital zircons from the Green Sandstone Bed do not have known intrusive sources and were likely derived from outside the present-day Barberton belt. This indicates that more than half of the felsic igneous events in the detrital zircon record do not have a whole-rock representation that can be directly studied. The similar compositions and inferred crustal evolution histories recorded in zircons from the Fig Tree and Moodies groups, as well as from the Green Sandstone Bed, suggest that they were derived from connected terranes experiencing similar crustal processes diachronously. Together, they show three phases of felsic continent formation, reflecting different crustal processes: (1) long-lived protocrust formed in the Hadean from undepleted mantle sources. These zircons are vastly different from younger zircons and, hence, Barberton TTGs are not good analogues of Hadean crust formation. (2) At 3.8 Ga, onset of significant crustal growth though cyclic juvenile additions and hydrous melting, possibly within a volcanic plateau setting but an arc-like setting cannot be excluded based on the data. (3) Between 3.4 and 3.3 Ga, felsic crust is generated through a previously unrecognized episode of crustal growth by shallow melting of mafic, mantle-derived sources. This is immediately followed by the onset of crustal thickening through the transport of surface-altered, hydrated materials to deep crustal levels. Since there is geological evidence for extension and shortening at that time this may reflect the onset of horizontal movement. Whether this last geodynamic setting reflects modern-style plate tectonics or not, continent formation and the onset of plate tectonics in the Barberton area occurred through complex multi-stage processes spanning almost a billion years, most of which is only accessible through the detrital zircon record.

Subaerial weathering drove stabilization of continents

Abstract:Earth's silica-rich continental crust is unique among the terrestrial planets and is critical for planetary habitability. Cratons represent the most imperishable continental fragments and form about 50% of the continental crust of the Earth, yet the mechanisms responsible for craton stabilization remain enigmatic 1 . Large tracts of strongly differentiated crust formed between 3 and 2.5 billion years ago, during the late Mesoarchaean and Neoarchaean time periods 2 . This crust contains abundant granitoid rocks with elevated concentrations of U, Th and K; the formation of these igneous rocks represents the final stage of stabilization of the continental crust 2,3 . Here, we show that subaerial weathering, triggered by the emergence of continental landmasses above sea level, facilitated intracrustal melting and the generation of peraluminous granitoid magmas. This resulted in reorganization of the compositional architecture of continental crust in the Neoarchaean period. Subaerial weathering concentrated heat-producing elements into terrigenous sediments that were incorporated into the deep crust, where they drove crustal melting and the chemical stratification required to stabilize the cratonic lithosphere. The chain of causality between subaerial weathering and the final differentiation of Earth's crust implies that craton stabilization was an inevitable consequence of continental emergence. Generation of sedimentary rocks enriched in heat-producing elements, at a time in the history of the Earth when the rate of radiogenic heat production was on average twice the present-day rate, resolves a long-standing question of why many cratons were stabilized in the Neoarchaean period.

Abstract:The scarcity of Archean (4.0–2.5 Ga) rocks on Earth limits our ability to analyse when plate tectonics began and what tectonic mode may have preceded it. Proposed times for the initiation of plate tectonics range from the Hadean eon (>4 Ga) to the Neoproterozoic era (ca 1.0–0.5 Ga), before which the Earth may have been dominated by stagnant-lid regimes that cooled through volcanic advection, partial crustal convection, and/or conduction. Here, we use various 1D numerical simulations of potential geodynamic states of the early Earth to predict detrital zircon age patterns. We find that different Archean tectonic modes yield contrasting temporal differences between zircon crystallization ages and respective maximum depositional ages of the sediments from which the detrital zircons were sourced (we have termed such age differences 'ΔtDZ'). We compare these predictions with a global compilation of detrital zircon age data from >400 Archean (meta)sedimentary units, including new data from six samples from the Pilbara Craton, Western Australia. Combined, the data show significantly increased contributions from high ΔtDZ detrital zircons after ca 3.4 Ga. For the Pilbara Craton, 90% of the detrital zircons in each of two >3.4 billion-year-old metasedimentary samples have crystallization ages that are ≤110 million years older than the maximum age of deposition (we use 'ΔtDZ90' to denote such age differences hereafter). The ΔtDZ90 of Pilbara strata formed at ca 3.29–3.27, 3.24–3.18 and ca 2.95 Ga show successively larger ΔtDZ90 values of ca 270, 290 and 570 million years, respectively. Globally, pre-3.4 billion-year-old samples show a low mean ΔtDZ90 of around 70 million years, but a mean of around 320 million years for 3.40–2.80 billion-year-old samples. Samples with >90% of zircons featuring >250 million year ΔtDZ values only occur at or after ca 3.23 Ga. These results are consistent with a significant slow-down in the rate of volcanic resurfacing, and increasing contributions of detritus from basins associated with exhumation and/or volcanic quiescence after ca 3.4 Ga. Compared with detrital zircon age predictions, our findings are best explained by a transition from volcanism-dominated stagnant-lid modes to one increasingly dominated by subduction over the period 3.4–3.2 Ga, with the emergence of plate tectonics within this period or at some time thereafter.

Continental crust formation on early Earth controlled by intrusive magmatism

Abstract:The global geodynamic regime of early Earth, which operated before the onset of plate tectonics, remains contentious. As geological and geochemical data suggest hotter Archean mantle temperature and more intense juvenile magmatism than in the present-day Earth, two crust-mantle interaction modes differing in melt eruption efficiency have been proposed: the Io-like heat-pipe tectonics regime dominated by volcanism and the "Plutonic squishy lid" tectonics regime governed by intrusive magmatism, which is thought to apply to the dynamics of Venus. Both tectonics regimes are capable of producing primordial tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) continental crust but lithospheric geotherms and crust production rates as well as proportions of various TTG compositions differ greatly, which implies that the heat-pipe and Plutonic squishy lid hypotheses can be tested using natural data. Here we investigate the creation of primordial TTG-like continental crust using self-consistent numerical models of global thermochemical convection associated with magmatic processes. We show that the volcanism-dominated heat-pipe tectonics model results in cold crustal geotherms and is not able to produce Earth-like primordial continental crust. In contrast, the Plutonic squishy lid tectonics regime dominated by intrusive magmatism results in hotter crustal geotherms and is capable of reproducing the observed proportions of various TTG rocks. Using a systematic parameter study, we show that the typical modern eruption efficiency of less than 40 per cent leads to the production of the expected amounts of the three main primordial crustal compositions previously reported from field data (low-, medium- and high-pressure TTG). Our study thus suggests that the pre-plate-tectonics Archean Earth operated globally in the Plutonic squishy lid regime rather than in an Io-like heat-pipe regime.

Abstract:The most ancient rocks in the geological record provide insights into the processes that shaped the evolution and composition of the first continental masses. Due to both the scarcity and the polymetamorphic history of exposed Eoarchean (>3.5 Ga) crust, the study of early geodynamic processes is very challenging and most of our knowledge has been learned from only a few localities on Earth.The present study focuses on felsic meta-igneous rock from the Saglek Block (North Atlantic Craton), a locality where recent zircon U-Pb dating studies indicate earliest crust formation in the Eoarchean (Komiya et al., 2017; Sa&#322;acin&#769;ska et al., 2018; Vezinet et al., 2018). We performed in situ oxygen isotopes measurement (SIMS analyses) in zircon grains that have been carefully selected from CL-imaging for the good preservation of their internal structure and for their pristine composition in rare Earth element. We then performed U-Pb/Hf isotopes by laser ablation split stream (LASS)-ICP-MS. The results indicate 3 distinct crystallization events: (1) an Eoarchean event at ca 3.86 Ga; (2) an early Paleoarchean metamorphic event at ca. 3.5 Ga, and (3) a Neoarchean event (ca. 2.7-2.8 Ga) with zircon domains showing complex zoned overgrowths. While the 3.86 Ga magmatic domains display mantle-like &#948;18O(+4.9&#177;0.2&#8240; to +6.8.0&#177;0.2&#8240;, n=30), large O-isotope fractionation (&#948;18Ovalues up to +9&#8240;) characterise the Paleoarchean metamorphic event. Such elevated &#948;18O signatures provide unequivocal evidence for hydrosphere&#8211;crust interactions and reworking processes resulting in metamorphic zircon growth at ca. 3.5 Ga, namely 1 Ga before the Archean-Proterozoic transition (Vezinet et al., 2019).Interestingly, the two oldest age groups have chondritic to sub-chondritic &#949;Hfi values: +1.0 &#177; 2.2 to &#8211;5.5 &#177; 1.8 whereas large variations in Hf isotope composition (&#949;Hfi value from &#8211;11.2 &#177; 2.5 to &#8211;20.3 &#177; 1.5) are found in the 2.8&#8211;2.7 Ga zircon domains. Such intra-sample heterogeneities implies a significant perturbation of Hf-isotope composition during metamorphic events related to mixing of fluid with inherited (older) Hf isotope source. Abstract:Significance Understanding when and how subaerial continental crust first formed is crucial, as it likely played a critical role in establishing Earth’s habitability. Although debated, the broad consensus is that the subaerial rise of continents began ∼2.5 billion years ago and was driven by plate tectonics. Here, we integrate the igneous and sedimentary history of Archean cratons to demonstrate that stable continental landmasses started to emerge above sea level 3.3 to 3.2 billion years ago (i.e., over 700 million years earlier than most models predict). We also demonstrate that these initial episodes of continental emersion were driven by voluminous granitoid magmatism in non–plate tectonic settings that formed ∼50-km-thick, silica-rich crust, which rose above the oceans due to isostasy.

Precambrian tectonic evolution of Earth: an outline

Abstract:Abstract Space probes in our solar system have examined all bodies larger than about 400 km in diameter and shown that Earth is the only silicate planet with extant plate tectonics sensu stricto. Venus and Earth are about the same size at 12 000 km diameter, and close in density at 5 200 and 5 500 kg.m-3 respectively. Venus and Mars are stagnant lid planets; Mars may have had plate tectonics and Venus may have had alternating ca. 0.5 Ga periods of stagnant lid punctuated by short periods of plate turnover. In this paper, we contend that Earth has seen five, distinct, tectonic periods characterized by mainly different rock associations and patterns with rapid transitions between them; the Hadean to ca. 4.0 Ga, the Eo- and Palaeoarchaean to ca. 3.1 Ga, the Neoarchaean to ca. 2.5 Ga, the Proterozoic to ca. 0.8 Ga, and the Neoproterozoic and Phanerozoic. Plate tectonics sensu stricto, as we know it for present-day Earth, was operating during the Neoproterozoic and Phanerozoic, as witnessed by features such as obducted supra-subduction zone ophiolites, blueschists, jadeite, ruby, continental thin sediment sheets, continental shelf, edge, and rise assemblages, collisional sutures, and long strike-slip faults with large displacements. From rock associations and structures, nothing resembling plate tectonics operated prior to ca. 2.5 Ga. Archaean geology is almost wholly dissimilar from Proterozoic-Phanerozoic geology. Most of the Proterozoic operated in a plate tectonic milieu but, during the Archaean, Earth behaved in a non-plate tectonic way and was probably characterised by a stagnant lid with heat-loss by pluming and volcanism, together with diapiric inversion of tonalite-trondjemite-granodiorite (TTG) basement diapirs through sinking keels of greenstone supracrustals, and very minor mobilism. The Palaeoarchaean differed from the Neoarchaean in having a more blobby appearance whereas a crude linearity is typical of the Neoarchaean. The Hadean was probably a dry stagnant lid Earth with the bulk of its water delivered during the late heavy bombardment, when that thin mafic lithosphere was fragmented to sink into the asthenosphere and generate the copious TTG Ancient Grey Gneisses (AGG). During the Archaean, a stagnant unsegmented, lithospheric lid characterised Earth, although a case can be made for some form of mobilism with “block jostling”, rifting, compression and strike-slip faulting on a small scale. We conclude, following Burke and Dewey (1973), that there is no evidence for subduction on a global scale before about 2.5 Ga, although there is geochemical evidence for some form of local recycling of crustal material into the mantle during that period. After 2.5 Ga, linear/curvilinear deformation belts were developed, which “weld” cratons together and palaeomagnetism indicates that large, lateral, relative motions among continents had begun by at least 1.88 Ga. The “boring billion”, from about 1.8 to 0.8 Ga, was a period of two super-continents (Nuna, also known as Columbia, and Rodinia) characterised by substantial magmatism of intraplate type leading to the hypothesis that Earth had reverted to a single plate planet over this period; however, orogens with marginal accretionary tectonics and related magmatism and ore genesis indicate that plate tectonics was still taking place at and beyond the bounds of these supercontinents. The break-up of Rodinia heralded modern plate tectonics from about 0.8 Ga. Our conclusions are based, almost wholly, upon geological data sets, including petrology, ore geology and geochemistry, with minor input from modelling and theory.

Abstract:Granitoids are silicic rocks that make up the majority of the continental crust, but different models arise for the origins of these rocks. One classification scheme defines different granitoid types on the basis of materials involved in the melting/crystallization process. In this end-member case, granitoids may be derived from melting of a preexisting igneous rock, while other granitoids, by contrast, are formed or influenced by melting of buried sedimentary material. In the latter case, assimilated sedimentary material altered by chemical processes occurring at the near surface of Earth-including biological activity-could influence magma chemical properties. Here, we apply a redox-sensitive calibration based on the incorporation of Ce into zircon crystals found in these two rock types, termed sedimentary-type (S-type) and igneous-type (I-type) granitoids. The ∼400 Ma Lachlan Fold Belt rocks of southeastern Australia were chosen for investigation here; these rocks have been a key target used to describe and explore granitoid genesis for close to 50 years. We observe that zircons found in S-type granitoids formed under more reducing conditions than those formed from I-type granitoids from the same terrain. This observation, while reflecting 9 granitoids and 289 analyses of zircons from a region where over 400 different plutons have been identified, is consistent with the incorporation of (reduced) organic matter in the former and highlights one possible manner in which life may modify the composition of igneous minerals. The chemical properties of rocks or igneous minerals may extend the search for ancient biological activity to the earliest period of known igneous activity, which dates back to ∼4.4 billion years ago. If organic matter was incorporated into Hadean sediments that were buried and melted, then these biological remnants could imprint a chemical signature within the subsequent melt and the resulting crystal assemblage, including zircon.

Abstract:Abstract The start of the Paleoproterozoic supercontinent cycle is typically taken as the initiation of orogenesis at ca. 2.1 Ga leading to the assembly of Earth's first supercontinent, Columbia. However, the dearth of ca. 2.5–2.2 Ga geological records makes it difficult to deduce tectonic factors during the onset of the Paleoproterozoic supercontinent cycle. The petrogenesis of tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) provides useful proxies for tracing prevailing geodynamic regimes of early continental evolution. However, marked decreases of TTG and other magmatism occurred across the Archean–Paleoproterozoic transition and have previously precluded forming testable hypotheses. Early Paleoproterozoic TTGs have been identified in the North China Craton (NCC) and other cratons, which may represent the last major pulse of TTGs globally. Here we present low δ 18 O and δ 30 Si ca. 2.3 Ga TTGs from the NCC, together with thermodynamic modeling and compilation of stable O and Si isotopes for TTGs globally through time. The ca. 2.3 Ga TTGs were derived from the partial melting of Archean basaltic crust and give lighter average zircon δ 18 O (3.15 ± 0.35‰) and whole‐rock δ 30 Si values (−0.17 ± 0.08‰) than most Archean TTGs. Considering coeval mafic‐felsic igneous rocks, and lithospheric thinning since ca. 2.5 Ga based on estimated crustal thickness through the Neoarchean–Paleoproterozoic, we posit the onset of an intraplate rifting consistent with the anomalous low‐δ 18 O magmatism. Continental rifting of Archean cratons/supercratons plausibly hints at the formation of rifts driving subduction initiation as the veritable onset of the Paleoproterozoic supercontinent cycle.

Abstract:Abstract The recycling of supracrustal materials, and in particular hydrated rocks, has a profound impact on mantle composition and thus on the formation of continental crust, because water modifies the physical properties of lithological systems and the mechanisms of partial melting and fractional fractionation. On the modern Earth, plate tectonics offers an efficient mechanism for mass transport from the Earth's surface to its interior, but how far this mechanism dates back in the Earth's history is still uncertain. Here, we use zircon oxygen (O) isotopes to track recycling of supracrustal materials into the magma sources of early Archean igneous suites from the Kaapvaal Craton, southern Africa. The mean δ18O values of zircon from TTG (tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite) rocks abruptly increase at the Paleo-Mesoarchean boundary (ca. 3230 million years ago; Ma), from mantle zircon values of 5‰–6‰ to approaching 7.1‰, and this increase occurs in ≤3230 Ma rocks with elevated Dy/Yb ratios. The 18O enrichment is a unique signature of low-temperature water–rock interaction on the Earth's surface. Because the later phase was emplaced into the same crustal level as the older one and TTG magmas would derive from melting processes in the garnet stability field (>40 km depth), we suggest that this evident shift in TTG zircon O isotopic compositions records the onset of recycling of the mafic oceanic crust that underwent seawater hydrothermal alteration at low temperature. The onset of the enhanced recycling of supracrustal materials may also have developed elsewhere in other Archean cratons and reflects a significant change in the tectonic realm during craton formation and stabilization, which may be important processes for the operation of plate tectonics on early Earth.

Abstract:Archaean crustal growth models remain contentious. Isotopically distinct crustal domains in the Superior Craton have been interpreted as exotic terranes, which has bolstered models of Archaean subduction-accretion. However, new geochemistry and geochronology of 3.0-2.7 Ga felsic igneous rocks across the Wabigoon superterrane, Superior Craton, together with a new stratigraphic synthesis, point to a shared chemo-stratigraphy across four isotopically-defined 'terranes'. Uranium-Pb zircon emplacement ages were measured for 109 new samples by ion microprobe. Two chemical shifts were identified across 3.02–2.68 Ga magmatism. At 2.75 Ga, variability in major oxides increases and some LILE, LREE, Sr/Y and La/Lu increase. At ca. 2.69 Ga, sanukitoid-like rocks record an increase in Mg#, compatible and transition elements, P 2 O 5 , LREE and steepening of REE patterns. The 2.75 Ga shift highlights the onset of greater melting/crystallisation depths and changing magma sources, reflecting cratonic thickening. The shift follows ∼2.8 Ga continental emergence recorded in basal conglomerates at a transition from plateau-like to rift- and arc-like greenstone assemblages. The <2.7 Ga shift reflects garnet-stable melting of a metasomatised mantle and correlates with craton-wide sedimentation and orogenesis. Several age peaks in near-continuous Marmion terrane magmatism from 3.02 Ga to 2.78 Ga are contemporaneous with scattered 3.02–2.78 Ga emplacement and inherited zircon ages from the 3.4 Ga Winnipeg River and 2.9 Ga Eastern Wabigoon terranes. All terranes record major magmatic episodes at ca. 2.74-2.72 and 2.7 Ga. A 2.87 Ga zircon xenocryst in the 2.72 Ga Atikwa batholith of the Western Wabigoon terrane is the earliest isotopic evidence for Mesoarchaean basement there. Contemporaneous magmatism, evidence for Mesoarchaean zircon age inheritance in Neoarchaean terranes, and a newly hypothesized time-correlative unconformity across terranes, favours (para-) autochthonous growth of the superterrane. The granite-greenstone record is reconciled by Mesoarchaean rifting, and subsequent development of a Neoarchaean suprasubduction zone before culminating with Kenoran collision. Therefore, <2.78 Ga subduction-accretion overprinted and shortened, but did not necessarily assemble, the Wabigoon superterrane. This finding complements growing global evidence for a unique mechanism of Archaean granite-greenstone development that culminated in late, localized subduction before cratonisation, with implications for the global onset of plate tectonics in the late Archean.

Abstract:The orogenic petrological processes associated with the amalgamation of Rodinia (ca. 1 Ga) and Gondwana (ca. 550 Ma) reflect distinct tectonic dynamics that might have contributed to the contrasting geochemical and biological evolution following the orogenies. In this study, we explore these differences using the time sequence analysis of geochemical proxies in the detrital zircons sourced from the margin of East Gondwana. The zircon Eu anomalies are stronger during the formation of Gondwana than Rodinia, indicating a thicker Gondwana crust than Rodinia; the hinterland of Rodinia (∼35 km) is significantly thinner than its core Grenville Province (55–60 km). The Ce to U and Ti ratio, U/Yb, and εHf(t) proxies suggest that the Rodinia assembly was dominated by non-arc intraplate magmatism, consistent with widespread high-temperature magmatism and protracted granulite-facies metamorphism. The thin crust and accordingly, low-elevation terrain, possibly overriding an anomalously hot mantle, limited continental weathering flux, and primary productivity in the Mesoproterozoic oceans. By contrast, the orogenies leading to the assembly of Gondwana may have proceeded in a modern-style plate tectonic manner, resulting in rapid uplift at the Gondwana margin, where voluminous clastic sediments were subsequently recycled and contributed to the post-orogenic magmatism from ca. 500 Ma. This massive crustal reworking is reflected by negative εHf(t) values of zircons that contrast εHf(t)∼0 in the Mesoproterozoic. The emergence of extensive mountains accelerated erosion and delivered key nutrients that might have fueled the rapid diversification of life forms in the late Precambrian and early Paleozoic.

Abstract:When and how continental crust formed and evolved to its current state is a fundamental question regarding crust - mantle evolution and geodynamic regimes on the early Earth. Earth's Archean continental crust is dominated by sodic granitoids comprising tonalite - trondhjemite - granodiorite (TTG), whereas diverse high-K granitoids appear relatively late in the geological record. Therefore, the formation and secular evolution of Archean TTGs and high-K granitoids is key to many issues regarding early Earth geodynamics. The Tarim Craton, NW China, is an ancient continental block containing some of the oldest rocks (-3.7 Ga TTGs) on Earth, but its Archean evolution is poorly known due to limited outcrop. Here we review the Archean geological record of the Tarim Craton and present the new findings of -3.2-3.0 Ga TTG, -2.8 Ga high-K granite and -2.35 Ga A-type granitoids (mostly syenogranite and syenite) in the southwestern Tarim. The -3.2-3.0 Ga TTG gneisses have homogenous and highly radiogenic zircon Hf isotopic compositions (weighted mean epsilon Hf = +3.5 to +4.4), indicating crustal growth from a long-term depleted mantle. In contrast, the -2.8 Ga high-K granite and -2.35 Ga A-type granitoids have lower epsilon Hf values (weighted mean + 2.0 and - 4.3 to -7.8, respectively) that plot on the evolution trend of the Mesoarchean juvenile crust, indicating repeated crustal reworking and progressive crustal differentiation. Thermodynamic - geochemical modelling demonstrates that water-fluxed melting is an efficient way to produce large volumes of TTG melts, and that melting pressure plays a primary role in determining the trace element systematics of diverse TTGs. Water-fluxed melting at crustal (10-12 kbar) and mantle (18-20 kbar) depths explains not only the compositions of the -3.2-3.0 and -3.7 Ga TTGs in the Tarim Craton, respectively, but also the global average compositions of median- to low-pressure and high-pressure TTGs. Partial melting of the Mesoarchean gneisses at shallow depth (<= 5 kbar) reproduces the trace element patterns of the -2.35 Ga A-type granitoids in SW Tarim, but cannot explain the low SiO2 of the syenites, which probably originated from partial melting of an enriched mantle resulting from recycling of Archean continental crust during continental rifting. This process also contributed to the diversification of granitoids and maturation of continental crust. Based on these results, we propose a new model for the formation and evolution of Archean continental crust. In our model, most Archean TTGs were produced by water-fluxed melting of thick proto-arcs built on thick Archean oceanic crust, whereas rare high-pressure TTGs were formed by water-fluxed melting of subducted arcs during intermittent subduction and arc accretion. Our model links the origin of Earth's continental crust to an early hydrosphere and subduction - accretion tectonics, and explains the decline of TTGs and rise of high-K granitoids by secular cooling of the mantle, which resulted in thinner oceanic crust and arcs, facilitating arc subduction, rather than arc accretion, and enhancing the rate of crustal reworking relative to crustal growth.
Zircon U–Pb–Lu–Hf–O Isotopic Evidence for ≥3.5ga Crustal Growth, Reworking and Differentiation in the Northern Tarim Craton

Abstract:Continental crust was largely generated before 2.5 Ga through mafic-ultramafic and TTG (tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite) magmatism, but it is contentious when did such primitive crust evolve into mature granodioritic to granitic composition similar to modern upper crust. Here we present zircon U-Pb-Lu-Hf-O isotopic data for late Paleoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks (the Xingditag Group) in the Kuruktag area, northern Tarim Craton, NW China. CL-imaging reveals core-rim structures for most zircons from a garnet-bearing paragneiss and a semi-pelitic schist, whereas two quartzites are dominated by metamorphic zircons. SHRIMP and/or LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating yielded a range of detrital ages from ca. 2.0 to 3.5 Ga for the zircon cores and a consistent metamorphic age of ca. 1.93 Ga for the rims for the paragneiss and schist. However, zircons from the two quartzites mainly record a ca. 1.85 Ga metamorphic event; detrital zircons are rare or absent. These data confirm that the Xingditag Group was deposited after ca. 2.0 Ga and was metamorphosed at ca. 1.93 or 1.85 Ga. Importantly, the ca. 2.0-3.5 Ga concordant detrital zircons exhibit low initial (176)Kf/Hf-177 ratios (as low as 0.28045) and high delta O-18 values (6.6-11.4 parts per thousand). These values are interpreted as recording primary magmatic features of the basement rocks in the northern Tarim Craton, because: (1) the dominantly prismatic or fragmentary morphology, oscillatory zoning and moderate Th/U ratios of the detrital zircons indicate a local provenance dominated by igneous rocks; and (2) the within-grain and overall heterogeneities argue against Hf and O isotopic resetting during metamorphism. Linear regressions of the initial Hf-178/Hf-177 values of these detrital zircons yield a remarkably consistent Lu-178/Hf-177 ratio of 0.01 for the oldest (T-DM(2) = 3.9 and 3.7 Ga) and youngest (T-DM(2) = 2.8 Ga) crustal components. These observations suggest that significant amounts of felsic continental crust may have been formed, altered and reworked as early as ca. 3.5 Ga, marking crustal differentiation and maturation during the Paleoarchean. Hafnium crustal model ages reveal that the oldest crustal component in the northern Tarim Craton may have been generated before ca. 3.9 Ga, much earlier than previously thought. Abstract:Abstract The composition and origin of Earth’s early crust remains hotly debated. Here we use partition coefficients to invert the trace element composition of 4.3–3.3 Gyr Jack Hills zircons to calculate the composition of the melts from which they crystallised. Using this approach, the average SiO 2 content of these melts was 59 ± 6 wt. % with Th/Nb, Dy/Yb and Sr/Y ratios of 2.7 ± 1.9, 0.9 ± 0.2 and 1.6 ± 0.7, respectively. Such features strongly indicate that the protolith for the Jack Hills zircons was not an intra-plate mafic rock, nor a TTG (tondjhemite-tonalite-granodiorite) or a Sudbury-like impact melt. Instead, the inferred equilibrium melts are much more similar to andesites formed in modern subduction settings. We find no evidence for any secular variation between 4.3 and 3.3 Gyr implying little change in the composition or tectonic affinity of the Earth’s early crust from the Hadean to Mesoarchaean.
