Abstract:Skin cancer continues to be the most frequently diagnosed form of cancer in the U.S., with not only significant effects on health and well-being but also significant economic costs associated with treatment. A crucial step to the treatment and management of skin cancer is effective skin cancer detection due to strong prognosis when treated at an early stage, with one of the key screening approaches being dermoscopy examination. Motivated by the advances of deep learning and inspired by the open source initiatives in the research community, in this study we introduce CancerNet-SCa, a suite of deep neural network designs tailored for the detection of skin cancer from dermoscopy images that is open source and available to the general public as part of the Cancer-Net initiative. To the best of the authors' knowledge, CancerNet-SCa comprises of the first machine-designed deep neural network architecture designs tailored specifically for skin cancer detection, one of which possessing a self-attention architecture design with attention condensers. Furthermore, we investigate and audit the behaviour of CancerNet-SCa in a responsible and transparent manner via explainability-driven model auditing. While CancerNet-SCa is not a production-ready screening solution, the hope is that the release of CancerNet-SCa in open source, open access form will encourage researchers, clinicians, and citizen data scientists alike to leverage and build upon them.
SNC_Net: Skin Cancer Detection by Integrating Handcrafted and Deep Learning-Based Features Using Dermoscopy Images

Abstract:The medical sciences are facing a major problem with the auto-detection of disease due to the fast growth in population density. Intelligent systems assist medical professionals in early disease detection and also help to provide consistent treatment that reduces the mortality rate. Skin cancer is considered to be the deadliest and most severe kind of cancer. Medical professionals utilize dermoscopy images to make a manual diagnosis of skin cancer. This method is labor-intensive and time-consuming and demands a considerable level of expertise. Automated detection methods are necessary for the early detection of skin cancer. The occurrence of hair and air bubbles in dermoscopic images affects the diagnosis of skin cancer. This research aims to classify eight different types of skin cancer, namely actinic keratosis (AKs), dermatofibroma (DFa), melanoma (MELa), basal cell carcinoma (BCCa), squamous cell carcinoma (SCCa), melanocytic nevus (MNi), vascular lesion (VASn), and benign keratosis (BKs). In this study, we propose SNC_Net, which integrates features derived from dermoscopic images through deep learning (DL) models and handcrafted (HC) feature extraction methods with the aim of improving the performance of the classifier. A convolutional neural network (CNN) is employed for classification. Dermoscopy images from the publicly accessible ISIC 2019 dataset for skin cancer detection is utilized to train and validate the model. The performance of the proposed model is compared with four baseline models, namely EfficientNetB0 (B1), MobileNetV2 (B2), DenseNet-121 (B3), and ResNet-101 (B4), and six state-of-the-art (SOTA) classifiers. With an accuracy of 97.81%, a precision of 98.31%, a recall of 97.89%, and an F1 score of 98.10%, the proposed model outperformed the SOTA classifiers as well as the four baseline models. Moreover, an Ablation study is also performed on the proposed method to validate its performance. The proposed method therefore assists dermatologists and other medical professionals in early skin cancer detection.

Abstract:Skin cancer is one of the most lethal kinds of human illness. In the present state of the health care system, skin cancer identification is a time-consuming procedure and if it is not diagnosed initially then it can be threatening to human life. To attain a high prospect of complete recovery, early detection of skin cancer is crucial. In the last several years, the application of deep learning (DL) algorithms for the detection of skin cancer has grown in popularity. Based on a DL model, this work intended to build a multi-classification technique for diagnosing skin cancers such as melanoma (MEL), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanocytic nevi (MN). In this paper, we have proposed a novel model, a deep learning-based skin cancer classification network (DSCC_Net) that is based on a convolutional neural network (CNN), and evaluated it on three publicly available benchmark datasets (i.e., ISIC 2020, HAM10000, and DermIS). For the skin cancer diagnosis, the classification performance of the proposed DSCC_Net model is compared with six baseline deep networks, including ResNet-152, Vgg-16, Vgg-19, Inception-V3, EfficientNet-B0, and MobileNet. In addition, we used SMOTE Tomek to handle the minority classes issue that exists in this dataset. The proposed DSCC_Net obtained a 99.43% AUC, along with a 94.17%, accuracy, a recall of 93.76%, a precision of 94.28%, and an F1-score of 93.93% in categorizing the four distinct types of skin cancer diseases. The rates of accuracy for ResNet-152, Vgg-19, MobileNet, Vgg-16, EfficientNet-B0, and Inception-V3 are 89.32%, 91.68%, 92.51%, 91.12%, 89.46% and 91.82%, respectively. The results showed that our proposed DSCC_Net model performs better as compared to baseline models, thus offering significant support to dermatologists and health experts to diagnose skin cancer.

Abstract:Diagnosing skin cancer through visual image examinations is time-consuming and error-prone, as the similar appearance and variations within each type of skin cancer challenge the efficiency and accuracy. Computer-aided techniques, notably convolutional neural networks (CNNs), demand substantial computational resources and exhibit a high level of time complexity, rendering them impractical for real-world applications necessitating rapid and precise skin cancer detection. To address this issue, this research introduces SKINC-NET, a streamlined deep learning (DL) model specifically designed to achieve precise diagnoses of various skin cancer types while minimizing computational resource requirements. SKINC-NET can classify seven types of skin lesions using dermoscopic images, designed with dense layers, batch normalization (BN), and LeakyReLU activation functions. Numerous experiments were conducted on the HAM10000 dataset, using a data augmentation approach to tackle the class imbalance problem. The study compared the SKINC-NET model's performance with four transfer learning models, namely ResNet50, VGG16, MobileNetV2, and EfficientNetB0. Several ablation studies were conducted to identify the optimal hyperparameters that lead to precise skin cancer diagnosis. The SKINC-NET model demonstrates its superiority by achieving the highest overall classification accuracy of 98.54% with minimal computation. The experimental findings affirm that the SKINC-NET model showcases remarkable robustness and presents several significant benefits, including lower computational complexity, a smaller number of trainable parameters, and superior performance compared to existing state-of-the-art models. SKINC-NET can assist dermatologists in making appropriate decisions regarding the early detection of skin cancer.

Abstract:Skin cancer is a common type of cancer worldwide. Early diagnosis of skin cancer can reduce the risk of death by increasing treatment success. However, it is challenging for dermatologists or specialists because the symptoms are vague in the early stages and cannot be noticed by the naked eye. This study examines digital diagnostic techniques supported by artificial intelligence, focusing on early skin cancer detection and two methods have been proposed. In the first method, DSCIMABNet deep learning architecture was developed by combining multi-head attention and depthwise separable convolution techniques. This model provides flexibility in learning the dataset's local features, abstract concepts, and long-term relationships. The DSCIMABNet model and modern deep learning models trained on ImageNet are proposed to be combined with the ensemble learning method in the second method. This approach provides a comprehensive feature extraction process that will increase the performance of the classification process with ensemble learning. The proposed approaches are trained and evaluated on the ISIC 2018 dataset with image enhancement applied in preprocessing. In the experimental results, DSCIMABNet achieved 84.28% accuracy, while the proposed hybrid method achieved 99.40% accuracy. Moreover, on the Mendeley dataset (CNN for Melanoma Detection Data), DSCIMABNet achieved 92.58% accuracy, while the hybrid method achieved 99.37% accuracy. This study may significantly contribute to developing new and effective methods for the early diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer.

Abstract:Automatic melanoma detection from dermoscopic skin samples is a very challenging task. However, using a deep learning approach as a machine vision tool can overcome some challenges. This research proposes an automated melanoma classifier based on a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) to accurately classify malignant vs. benign melanoma. The structure of the DCNN is carefully designed by organizing many layers that are responsible for extracting low to high-level features of the skin images in a unique fashion. Other vital criteria in the design of DCNN are the selection of multiple filters and their sizes, employing proper deep learning layers, choosing the depth of the network, and optimizing hyperparameters. The primary objective is to propose a lightweight and less complex DCNN than other state-of-the-art methods to classify melanoma skin cancer with high efficiency. For this study, dermoscopic images containing different cancer samples were obtained from the International Skin Imaging Collaboration datastores (ISIC 2016, ISIC2017, and ISIC 2020). We evaluated the model based on accuracy, precision, recall, specificity, and F1-score. The proposed DCNN classifier achieved accuracies of 81.41%, 88.23%, and 90.42% on the ISIC 2016, 2017, and 2020 datasets, respectively, demonstrating high performance compared with the other state-of-the-art networks. Therefore, this proposed approach could provide a less complex and advanced framework for automating the melanoma diagnostic process and expediting the identification process to save a life.

Abstract:The rising occurrence and notable public health consequences of skin cancer, especially of the most challenging form known as melanoma, have created an urgent demand for more advanced approaches to disease management. The integration of modern computer vision methods into clinical procedures offers the potential for enhancing the detection of skin cancer . The UNet model has gained prominence as a valuable tool for this objective, continuously evolving to tackle the difficulties associated with the inherent diversity of dermatological images. These challenges stem from diverse medical origins and are further complicated by variations in lighting, patient characteristics, and hair density. In this work, we present an innovative end-to-end trainable network crafted for the segmentation of skin cancer . This network comprises an encoder–decoder architecture, a novel feature extraction block, and a densely connected multi-rate Atrous convolution block. We evaluated the performance of the proposed lightweight skin cancer segmentation network (LSCS-Net) on three widely used benchmark datasets for skin lesion segmentation: ISIC 2016, ISIC 2017, and ISIC 2018. The generalization capabilities of LSCS-Net are testified by the excellent performance on breast cancer and thyroid nodule segmentation datasets. The empirical findings confirm that LSCS-net attains state-of-the-art results, as demonstrated by a significantly elevated Jaccard index.

Double-Condensing Attention Condenser: Leveraging Attention in Deep Learning to Detect Skin Cancer from Skin Lesion Images

Abstract:Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States and is estimated to affect one in five Americans. Recent advances have demonstrated strong performance on skin cancer detection, as exemplified by state of the art performance in the SIIM-ISIC Melanoma Classification Challenge; however these solutions leverage ensembles of complex deep neural architectures requiring immense storage and compute costs, and therefore may not be tractable. A recent movement for TinyML applications is integrating Double-Condensing Attention Condensers (DC-AC) into a self-attention neural network backbone architecture to allow for faster and more efficient computation. This paper explores leveraging an efficient self-attention structure to detect skin cancer in skin lesion images and introduces a deep neural network design with DC-AC customized for skin cancer detection from skin lesion images. The final model is publicly available as a part of a global open-source initiative dedicated to accelerating advancement in machine learning to aid clinicians in the fight against cancer. Future work of this research includes iterating on the design of the selected network architecture and refining the approach to generalize to other forms of cancer.

Grid-Based Structural and Dimensional Skin Cancer Classification with Self-Featured Optimized Explainable Deep Convolutional Neural Networks

Abstract:Skin cancer is a severe and potentially lethal disease, and early detection is critical for successful treatment. Traditional procedures for diagnosing skin cancer are expensive, time-intensive, and necessitate the expertise of a medical practitioner. In recent years, many researchers have developed artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including shallow and deep machine learning-based approaches, to diagnose skin cancer. However, AI-based skin cancer diagnosis faces challenges in complexity, low reproducibility, and explainability. To address these problems, we propose a novel Grid-Based Structural and Dimensional Explainable Deep Convolutional Neural Network for accurate and interpretable skin cancer classification. This model employs adaptive thresholding for extracting the region of interest (ROI), using its dynamic capabilities to enhance the accuracy of identifying cancerous regions. The VGG-16 architecture extracts the hierarchical characteristics of skin lesion images, leveraging its recognized capabilities for deep feature extraction. Our proposed model leverages a grid structure to capture spatial relationships within lesions, while the dimensional features extract relevant information from various image channels. An Adaptive Intelligent Coney Optimization (AICO) algorithm is employed for self-feature selected optimization and fine-tuning the hyperparameters, which dynamically adapts the model architecture to optimize feature extraction and classification. The model was trained and tested using the ISIC dataset of 10,015 dermascope images and the MNIST dataset of 2357 images of malignant and benign oncological diseases. The experimental results demonstrated that the model achieved accuracy and CSI values of 0.96 and 0.97 for TP 80 using the ISIC dataset, which is 17.70% and 16.49% more than lightweight CNN, 20.83% and 19.59% more than DenseNet, 18.75% and 17.53% more than CNN, 6.25% and 6.18% more than Efficient Net-B0, 5.21% and 5.15% over ECNN, 2.08% and 2.06% over COA-CAN, and 5.21% and 5.15% more than ARO-ECNN. Additionally, the AICO self-feature selected ECNN model exhibited minimal FPR and FNR of 0.03 and 0.02, respectively. The model attained a loss of 0.09 for ISIC and 0.18 for the MNIST dataset, indicating that the model proposed in this research outperforms existing techniques. The proposed model improves accuracy, interpretability, and robustness for skin cancer classification, ultimately aiding clinicians in early diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract:Skin cancer recognition poses a significant challenge in the field of deep learning. While conventional convolutional neural networks have been extensively employed for classifying skin cancer images, their fixed receptive field limits their ability to capture the global features present in such images. Conversely, transformer-based models that rely on self-attention can effectively model long-range dependencies, but they come with high computational complexity and exhibit certain limitations in local feature induction. To address this issue, this paper presents a novel skin cancer recognition network named ECRNet. ECRNet has been designed to effectively capture both global and local information, and it introduces an explicit vision center to accomplish this purpose. Moreover, this paper presents a feature fusion module known as the CCPA block. This module utilizes both coordinate attention and channel attention mechanisms to extract image features and enhance the representation of skin cancer images. To evaluate the performance of ECRNet, extensive experimental comparisons were conducted on the ISIC2018 dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that ECRNet outperforms the baseline model, showing improvements of 1.19% in accuracy (ACC), 1.96% in precision, 4.08% in recall, and 3.28% in the F1 score.

Enhancing Skin Cancer Detection Through Deep Learning Techniques

Abstract:Skin cancer is a common and possibly deadly disease that affects the skin's outer layers. Promoting knowledge of skin cancer, its risk factors, and the need for early detection can help combat the illness and reduce its impact on individuals and communities around the world. In this project, we describe a novel use of deep learning techniques to detect skin cancer in its early stages using dermatoscopic images. The primary goal of this study is to create an accurate and reliable model for predicting various types of skin cancer, including actinic keratoses and intraepithelial carcinoma (akiec), basal cell carcinoma (bcc), benign keratosis-like lesions (bkl), dermatofibroma (df), melanoma (mel), melanocytic nevi (nv), and pyogenic granulomas and hemorrhage (vasc). The project is written in Python, and the primary algorithm/model used is the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture. CNNs are ideal for image classification jobs because they can automatically learn relevant characteristics from input. Using CNNs, our model is trained on the HAM10000 (Human Against Machine with 10,000 training images) dataset, which contains 10015 high-resolution dermatoscopic images obtained from distinct populations and acquired via multiple modalities. The achieved findings illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. The model had an amazing training accuracy of 96.00% and a validation accuracy of 97.00%. These high accuracy rates demonstrate the promise of our deep learning-based skin cancer prediction system as a trustworthy tool for early diagnosis, allowing healthcare practitioners to make more informed decisions and improve patient outcomes. Our effort contributes to the field of dermatological research and machine learning, providing valuable insights into the use of deep learning algorithms for skin cancer prediction. Furthermore, the publicly available HAM10000 dataset, which includes a wide range of dermatoscopic pictures, can be a great resource for academic study and future advances in the field of medical image processing and classification. Abstract:Skin cancer poses a serious risk to one's health and can only be effectively treated with early detection. Early identification is critical since skin cancer has a higher fatality rate, and it expands gradually to different areas of the body. The rapid growth of automated diagnosis frameworks has led to the combination of diverse machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision algorithms for detecting clinical samples and atypical skin lesion specimens. Automated methods for recognizing skin cancer that use deep learning techniques are discussed in this article: convolutional neural networks, and, in general, artificial neural networks. The recognition of symmetries is a key point in dealing with the skin cancer image datasets; hence, in developing the appropriate architecture of neural networks, as it can improve the performance and release capacities of the network. The current study emphasizes the need for an automated method to identify skin lesions to reduce the amount of time and effort required for the diagnostic process, as well as the novel aspect of using algorithms based on deep learning for skin lesion detection. The analysis concludes with underlying research directions for the future, which will assist in better addressing the difficulties encountered in human skin cancer recognition. By highlighting the drawbacks and advantages of prior techniques, the authors hope to establish a standard for future analysis in the domain of human skin lesion diagnostics.

Abstract:Skin cancer is a frequently occurring and possibly deadly disease that necessitates prompt and precise diagnosis in order to ensure efficacious treatment. This paper introduces an innovative approach for accurately identifying skin cancer by utilizing Convolution Neural Network architecture and optimizing hyperparameters. The proposed approach aims to increase the precision and efficacy of skin cancer recognition and consequently enhance patients' experiences. This investigation aims to tackle various significant challenges in skin cancer recognition, encompassing feature extraction, model architecture design, and optimizing hyperparameters. The proposed model utilizes advanced deep-learning methodologies to extract complex features and patterns from skin cancer images. We enhance the learning procedure of deep learning by integrating Standard U-Net and Improved MobileNet-V3 with optimization techniques, allowing the model to differentiate malignant and benign skin cancers. Also substituted the crossed-entropy loss function of the Mobilenet-v3 mathematical framework with a bias loss function to enhance the accuracy. The model's squeeze and excitation component was replaced with the practical channel attention component to achieve parameter reduction. Integrating cross-layer connections among Mobile modules has been proposed to leverage synthetic features effectively. The dilated convolutions were incorporated into the model to enhance the receptive field. The optimization of hyperparameters is of utmost importance in improving the efficiency of deep learning models. To fine-tune the model's hyperparameter, we employ sophisticated optimization methods such as the Bayesian optimization method using pre-trained CNN architecture MobileNet-V3. The proposed model is compared with existing models, i.e., MobileNet, VGG-16, MobileNet-V2, Resnet-152v2 and VGG-19 on the "HAM-10000 Melanoma Skin Cancer dataset". The empirical findings illustrate that the proposed optimized hybrid MobileNet-V3 model outperforms existing skin cancer detection and segmentation techniques based on high precision of 97.84%, sensitivity of 96.35%, accuracy of 98.86% and specificity of 97.32%. The enhanced performance of this research resulted in timelier and more precise diagnoses, potentially contributing to life-saving outcomes and mitigating healthcare expenditures.

Abstract:Accurate skin disease detection is one of the most challenging tasks due to high-class imbalance and limited labeled datasets. Recently Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) with ensemble learning has achieved significant popularity in skin cancer classification. However, implementing DCNN models with ensemble learning is not feasible for deployment on portable diagnostic devices due to the limitation in computing resources and computing time. This paper proposes a Channel Attention and Adaptive Class Balanced Focal Loss function based lightweight Deep CNN model (CACBL-Net) for handling the issues of data imbalance and limited computing resources of portable diagnostic devices, such as mobile phones or tablets. Channel attention explores interdependencies between channels by recalibrating channel-wise feature responses. To deal with the issue of high-class imbalance, the proposed method used an adaptive class balance focal loss function which can quickly concentrate the model on complex cases while automatically downweighting the contribution of easy examples during training. The proposed CACBL-Net is validated on three popular skin cancer datasets which are HAM-10000, PAD-UFES-20, and MED-NODE. Dermoscopic, non-dermoscopic and smartphone images are taken from all three datasets for experimental work. The quantitative findings indicate that the proposed CACBL-Net model achieved a sensitivity of 90.60%, 91.88%, and 91.31% for the HAM-10000, PAD-UFES-20, and MED-NODE datasets, respectively. Additionally, the average prediction time per patient was recorded at 0.006, 0.010, and 0.011 s. These results demonstrate superior performance compared to other state-of-the-art deep learning models. The experimental finding suggested that the proposed method can achieve a significant performance at a low cost of computational resources and inference time, which makes it potentially feasible for deployment in portable diagnostic devices for automated diagnosis of skin lesions.

Cancer-Net SCa-Synth: An Open Access Synthetically Generated 2D Skin Lesion Dataset for Skin Cancer Classification

Abstract:In the United States, skin cancer ranks as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, presenting a significant public health issue due to its high rates of occurrence and the risk of serious complications if not caught early. Recent advancements in dataset curation and deep learning have shown promise in quick and accurate detection of skin cancer. However, current open-source datasets have significant class imbalances which impedes the effectiveness of these deep learning models. In healthcare, generative artificial intelligence (AI) models have been employed to create synthetic data, addressing data imbalance in datasets by augmenting underrepresented classes and enhancing the overall quality and performance of machine learning models. In this paper, we build on top of previous work by leveraging new advancements in generative AI, notably Stable Diffusion and DreamBooth. We introduce Cancer-Net SCa-Synth, an open access synthetically generated 2D skin lesion dataset for skin cancer classification. Further analysis on the data effectiveness by comparing the ISIC 2020 test set performance for training with and without these synthetic images for a simple model highlights the benefits of leveraging synthetic data to improve performance. Abstract:One of the most promising research initiatives in the healthcare field is focused on the rising incidence of skin cancer worldwide and improving early discovery methods for the disease. The most significant factor in the fatalities caused by skin cancer is the late identification of the disease. The likelihood of human survival may be significantly improved by performing an early diagnosis followed by appropriate therapy. It is not a simple process to extract the elements from the photographs of the tumors that may be used for the prospective identification of skin cancer. Several deep learning models are widely used to extract efficient features for a skin cancer diagnosis; nevertheless, the literature demonstrates that there is still room for additional improvements in various performance metrics. This study proposes a hybrid deep convolutional neural network architecture for identifying skin cancer by adding two main heuristics. These include Xception and MobileNetV2 models. Data augmentation was introduced to balance the dataset, and the transfer learning technique was utilized to resolve the challenges of the absence of labeled datasets. It has been detected that the suggested method of employing Xception in conjunction with MobileNetV2 attains the most excellent performance, particularly concerning the dataset that was evaluated: specifically, it produced 97.56% accuracy, 97.00% area under the curve, 100% sensitivity, 93.33% precision, 96.55% F1 score, and 0.0370 false favorable rates. This research has implications for clinical practice and public health, offering a valuable tool for dermatologists and healthcare professionals in their fight against skin cancer.
Skin-CAD: Explainable deep learning classification of skin cancer from dermoscopic images by feature selection of dual high-level CNNs features and transfer learning

Abstract:Skin cancer (SC) significantly impacts many individuals' health all over the globe. Hence, it is imperative to promptly identify and diagnose such conditions at their earliest stages using dermoscopic imaging. Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) methods relying on deep learning techniques especially convolutional neural networks (CNN) can effectively address this issue with outstanding outcomes. Nevertheless, such black box methodologies lead to a deficiency in confidence as dermatologists are incapable of comprehending and verifying the predictions that were made by these models. This article presents an advanced an explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) based CAD system named "Skin-CAD" which is utilized for the classification of dermoscopic photographs of SC. The system accurately categorises the photographs into two categories: benign or malignant, and further classifies them into seven subclasses of SC. Skin-CAD employs four CNNs of different topologies and deep layers. It gathers features out of a pair of deep layers of every CNN, particularly the final pooling and fully connected layers, rather than merely depending on attributes from a single deep layer. Skin-CAD applies the principal component analysis (PCA) dimensionality reduction approach to minimise the dimensions of pooling layer features. This also reduces the complexity of the training procedure compared to using deep features from a CNN that has a substantial size. Furthermore, it combines the reduced pooling features with the fully connected features of each CNN. Additionally, Skin-CAD integrates the dual-layer features of the four CNNs instead of entirely depending on the features of a single CNN architecture. In the end, it utilizes a feature selection step to determine the most important deep attributes. This helps to decrease the general size of the feature set and streamline the classification process. Predictions are analysed in more depth using the local interpretable model-agnostic explanations (LIME) approach. This method is used to create visual interpretations that align with an already existing viewpoint and adhere to recommended standards for general clarifications. Two benchmark datasets are employed to validate the efficiency of Skin-CAD which are the Skin Cancer: Malignant vs. Benign and HAM10000 datasets. The maximum accuracy achieved using Skin-CAD is 97.2 % and 96.5 % for the Skin Cancer: Malignant vs. Benign and HAM10000 datasets respectively. The findings of Skin-CAD demonstrate its potential to assist professional dermatologists in detecting and classifying SC precisely and quickly.

Abstract:Skin cancer these days have become quite a common occurrence especially in certain geographic areas such as Oceania. Early detection of such cancer with high accuracy is of utmost importance, and studies have shown that deep learning- based intelligent approaches to address this concern have been fruitful. In this research, we present a novel deep learning- based classifier that has shown promise in classifying this type of cancer on a relevant preprocessed dataset having important features pre-identified through an effective feature extraction method. Skin cancer in modern times has become one of the most ubiquitous types of cancer. Accurate identification of cancerous skin lesions is of vital importance in treating this malady. In this research, we employed a deep learning approach to identify benign and malignant skin lesions. The initial dataset was obtained from Kaggle before several preprocessing steps for hair and background removal, image enhancement, selection of the region of interest (ROI), region-based segmentation, morphological gradient, and feature extraction were performed, resulting in histopathological images data with 20 input features based on geometrical and textural features. A principle component analysis (PCA)-based feature extraction technique was put into action to reduce the dimensionality to 10 input features. Subsequently, we applied our deep learning classifier, SkinNet-16, to detect the cancerous lesion accurately at a very early stage. The highest accuracy was obtained with the Adamax optimizer with a learning rate of 0.006 from the neural network-based model developed in this study. The model also delivered an impressive accuracy of approximately 99.19%.

Abstract:A powerful medical decision support system for classifying skin lesions from dermoscopic images is an important tool to prognosis of skin cancer. In the recent years, Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) have made a significant advancement in detecting skin cancer types from dermoscopic images, in-spite of its fine grained variability in its appearance. The main objective of this research work is to develop a DCNN based model to automatically classify skin cancer types into melanoma and non-melanoma with high accuracy. The datasets used in this work were obtained from the popular challenges ISIC-2019 and ISIC-2020, which have different image resolutions and class imbalance problems. To address these two problems and to achieve high performance in classification we have used EfficientNet architecture based on transfer learning techniques, which learns more complex and fine grained patterns from lesion images by automatically scaling depth, width and resolution of the network. We have augmented our dataset to overcome the class imbalance problem and also used metadata information to improve the classification results. Further to improve the efficiency of the EfficientNet we have used ranger optimizer which considerably reduces the hyper parameter tuning, which is required to achieve state-of-the-art results. We have conducted several experiments using different transferring models and our results proved that EfficientNet variants outperformed in the skin lesion classification tasks when compared with other architectures. The performance of the proposed system was evaluated using Area under the ROC curve (AUC - ROC) and obtained the score of 0.9681 by optimal fine tuning of EfficientNet-B6 with ranger optimizer.

Abstract:There has been a steady increase in the incidence of skin cancer worldwide, with a high rate of mortality. Early detection and segmentation of skin lesions are crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment, necessary to improve the survival rate of patients. However, skin lesion segmentation is a challenging task due to the low contrast of lesions and their high similarity in terms of appearance, to healthy tissue. This underlines the need for an accurate and automatic approach for skin lesion segmentation. To tackle this issue, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) called SkinNet. The proposed CNN is a modified version of U-Net. We compared the performance of our approach with other state-of-the-art techniques, using the ISBI 2017 challenge dataset. Our approach outperformed the others in terms of the Dice coefficient, Jaccard index and sensitivity, evaluated on the held-out challenge test data set, across 5-fold cross validation experiments. SkinNet achieved an average value of 85.10, 76.67 and 93.0%, for the DC, JI, and SE, respectively.
