Abstract:According to the monitoring data on Changjiang River Estuary and its adjacent sea areas' sediments in October 2007 and June 2009,heavy metals(Cu,Pb,Zn,Cd,Cr,As,Hg) and TOC in the sediments of those areas were studied.The method of Potential Ecological Risk Index techniques presented by Hakanson was used to assess the potential ecological risk of heavy metals.The average contents of Cu,Pb,Zn,Cd,Cr,As,Hg were 37.43×10-6,36.85×10-6,93.48×10-6,0.17×10-6,72.91×10-6,10.60×10-6 and 0.043×10-6 respectively.In general,the distribution of heavy metals show that it was high in Changjiang River Estuary and Hangzhou Bay,but lower at the outer continental shelf waters.Overall,the contents of heavy metals were higher in the south sea areas than those in the north sea areas.The sequences of the heavy metals pollution index of the studied metals were CuCr ZnPbAsCdHg,Cu and Cr were the main pollution factors;the order of potential ecological risk were CdHgCuAsPbCrZn,Cd,Hg and Cu were the main potential ecological risk factors.Thus,it can be seen that just parts of the study area were polluted by the heavy metals.They were also low potential ecological risk with the potential ecological risk indeices less than 150.

Abstract:The river sediment acts not only as the major carrier but also the secondary sources of heavy metal contamination in river water.Elemental concentrations and chemical phases are essential to the study of heavy metal contamination in rivers and the evaluation of their ecological risks.In this study,1 mol/L hydrochloric acid (HC1) is used to leach heavy metals out from the samples (including both floodplain sediment and suspended particulate matter) collected from the Jiaojiang River,aiming to investigate the distribution of heavy metals (Zn,Pb,Cr,Cu and Cd) in acid-soluble and acid-insoluble phases,and thus to explore the major sources of heavy metals and their ecological risks.The concentrations of Zn,Pb,Cu and Cd in the Jiaojiang sediments are significantly higher than the local background values and their leaching rates,the ratios of elemental concentrations in the leachate to those in bulk samples,are higher than 60％.When the environment conditions change,heavy metals in the leachate can be easily released to the overlying water column and cause high ecological risks.The results of correlation and principal component analyses reveal that heavy metals in the leachate are incorporated into the sediments from aqueous solution,by processes such as adsorption onto Fe-Mn oxides and organic complexation,predominantly controlled by emissions from industrial and agricultural activities.According to the data of enrichment factor (EF) and potential ecological risk index,Cd is the most enriched element in the Jiaojiang sediments,especially in the upstream region,the Yongan River,where Cd is significantly enriched with high ecological risk,while Zn,Pb,Cr,Cu all display mild to moderate increase.The accumulation of heavy metals in the rivers in southeastern China and their ecological risks deserve further investigation.
Effect of microbial communities on nitrogen and phosphorus metabolism in rivers with different heavy metal pollution

Abstract:Small urban and rural rivers usually face heavy metal pollution as a result of urbanization and industrial and agricultural activities. To elucidate the metabolic capacity of microbial communities on nitrogen and phosphorus cycle in river sediments under different heavy metal pollution backgrounds, this study collected samples in situ from two typical rivers, Tiquan River and Mianyuan River, with different heavy metal pollution levels. The microbial community structure and metabolic capacity of nitrogen and phosphorus cycles of sediment microorganisms were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that the major heavy metals in the sediments of the Tiquan River were Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd with the contents of 103.80, 30.65, 25.95, and 0.44 mg/kg, respectively, while the major heavy metals in the sediments of the Mianyuan River were Cd and Cu with the contents of 0.60 and 27.81 mg/kg, respectively. The dominant bacteria Steroidobacter , Marmoricola , and Bacillus in the sediments of the Tiquan River had positive correlations with Cu, Zn, and Pb while are negatively correlated with Cd. Cd had a positive correlation with Rubrivivax , and Cu had a positive correlation with Gaiella in the sediments of the Mianyuan River. The dominant bacteria in the sediments of the Tiquan River showed strong phosphorus metabolic ability, and the dominant bacteria in the sediments of the Mianyuan River showed strong nitrogen metabolic ability, corresponding to the lower total phosphorus content in the Tiquan River and the higher total nitrogen content in the Mianyuan River. The results of this study showed that resistant bacteria became dominant bacteria due to the stress of heavy metals, and these bacteria showed strong nitrogen and phosphorus metabolic ability. It can provide theoretical support for the pollution prevention and control of small urban and rural rivers and have positive significance for maintaining the healthy development of rivers.

Abstract:Abstract Background Heavy metal pollution of aquatic systems is a global issue that has received considerable attention. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA), principal component analysis (PCA), and potential ecological risk index (PERI) have been applied to heavy metal data to trace potential factors, identify regional differences, and evaluate ecological risks. Sediment cores of 200 cm in depth were taken using a drilling platform at 10 sampling sites along the Xihe River, an urban river located in western Shenyang City, China. Then they were divided into 10 layers (20 cm each layer). The concentrations of the As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn were measured for each layer. Eight heavy metals, namely Pb, Zn, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Hg, were measured for each layer in this study. Results The average concentrations of the As, Cd, Cu, Hg, and Zn were significantly higher than their background values in soils in the region, and mainly gathered at 0–120 cm in depth in the upstream, 0–60 cm in the midstream, and 0–20 cm downstream. This indicated that these heavy metals were derived from the upstream areas where a large quantity of effluents from the wastewater treatment plants enter the river. Ni, Pb, and Cr were close or slightly higher than their background values. The decreasing order of the average concentration of Cd was upstream > midstream > downstream, so were Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn. The highest concentration of As was midstream, followed by upstream and then downstream, which was different to Cd. The potential factors of heavy metal pollution were Cd, Cu, Hg, Zn, and As, especially Cd and Hg with the high ecological risks. The ecological risk levels of all heavy metals were much higher in the upstream than the midstream and downstream. Conclusions Industrial discharge was the dominant source for eight heavy metals in the surveyed area, and rural domestic sewage has a stronger influence on the Hg pollution than industrial pollutants. These findings indicate that effective management strategies for sewage discharge should be developed to protect the environmental quality of urban rivers.

Abstract:The sediment and soil in the Juma River channel pose a risk of pollution to the downstream ecological environment of Beijing and Xiong'an New Area. To address this issue, sediments and soil samples were collected along the river from the source to the Zhangfang outlet. The samples were further divided into three types:main stream sediment (29 samples), riverbank soil (27 samples), and farmland soil (26 samples). Enrichment factor analysis and the potential ecological risk index were employed to investigate the ecological risk. The results showed that the average concentrations of Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn, and Cu in the river sediment and soil in the study area were higher than those in the Baiyangdian Lake sediment and the surface soil of Hebei Province, whereas the concentrations of As, Cr, and Ni were relatively lower. The ranking of heavy metal pollution levels from high to low were Cd > Hg > Pb > Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > As. The comprehensive ecological risk index showed that farmland soil and riverbank soil were mainly at a slight risk, followed by a moderate risk. The potential ecological risk of the main stream sediment was mainly moderate, severe, and extremely severe, accounting for 35.5%, 24.1%, and 24.1%, respectively, and the main contributing factors of the risk were Cd and Hg. The results of multivariate statistical analysis indicated that the main pollution sources of Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu were industrial and mining activities. Cr, Ni, and As were mainly controlled by the weathering of the parent rock, and As was also influenced by agricultural activities. Hg was controlled by composite pollution sources such as industrial and mining activities, parent rock weathering, and atmospheric dust fall. Overall, the risk of heavy metal in the soil of the research area was generally at a slight level. However, there was a significant enrichment of Cd and other heavy metal in the sediment of the Taiyu-Sigezhuang-Pengtou River. This river section should be the focus of environmental monitoring, river dredging, and governance.

Abstract:This study comprehensively assesses spatial distribution, pollution levels, and potential sources of heavy metal(loid)s in surface sediments across multiple river systems along the coastal area of the East China Sea. Copper in Qiantang River and Xiangshan Bay showed higher concentations and exceeded the threshold effect value, while the higher content of Lead was mainly found in the Saijiang River, Oujiang River, and Minjiang River. Heavy metal(loid)s in the alluvium of Qiantang River, Jiaojiang River, and Yangtze River showed low to moderate pollution levels, with Cd posing the highest ecological risk, followed by Hg. Meanwhile, Qiantang River, Jiaojiang River, Yangtze River, and Oujiang River exhibited considerable to moderate ecological risks and low toxic risk. PMF model analysis results reveal that concentrations of Cr, Ni, and As were closely related with natural geogenic input (36.56 %), while industrial and traffic activities (48.77 %) were primary source of Cu, Pb, Zn, and Hg, and main source of Cd was agricultural emissions (14.67 %).

Abstract:Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is a common hematologic malignancy with a highly variable clinical course. While the median age at diagnosis is 72 years of age and fewer than 10% of patients are diagnosed before the age of 60 years, the majority of patients who require therapy will ultimately relapse. Advances in upfront therapy and supportive care have dramatically improved initial responses compared with traditional akylator-based chemotherapy. However, comparable results are not generally observed in the salvage setting. Careful planning that takes into account the duration of the initial response, patient age and/or comorbidities, and cytogenetic and molecular profiles are critical for the successful management of patients with relapsed chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
Heavy metal pollution in urban river sediment of different urban functional areas and its influence on microbial community structure

Abstract:In this study, the Songgang River (SR) was selected as a typical contaminated urban river in a highly urbanized city (Shenzhen) that is extensively polluted by heavy metals (HMs). Five representative sampling sites were selected from different urban functional areas along the SR, and the spatial and vertical distributions of HMs and the related environmental risk were investigated. In addition, the distribution variability, composition, and abundance of microbial communities, as well as the correlation between the abundance of the operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and the HM contents were analyzed. The spatial distribution of HMs in the sediment revealed wide variation among the different urban functional areas. Industrial and residential areas had higher HM contents, following the order of Cu > Zn > Ni > Cr > Pb. In addition, the vertical characterization (5–300 cm) of HM content showed a decreasing trend with depth, with a distinct layer around 120–180 cm that might have been caused by anthropogenic activity. An ecological risk assessment indicated that Cu, Ni, and Cr pose high potential risks in these industrial and residential areas (at the depth of 5–180 cm). Furthermore, microbial community analysis indicated that some HM-tolerant bacteria (e.g., Gallionella, Acidovorax, Arenimonas, Curvibacter, and Sideroxydans) were dominant in the 5–120 cm layer, corresponding to high HM contents. A canonical correspondence analysis and co-occurrence network further confirmed that there was a strong correlation among the urban functional areas, HM contents, and the abundance of microorganisms in the urban river sediment. The results of this study have the potential to provide a bio-augmentation strategy for the in-situ bioremediation of sediment contaminated by HMs.

Abstract:Suspended particulate matter (SPM) is a major source of contamination in urban rivers as it serves as a carrier for pollutants, such as heavy metals. In this study, the Beiyun River, northern China, was used as a case study to determine the characteristics of SPM-associated heavy metal spatial distribution, to evaluate the potential ecological risks and identify heavy metal sources. The concentrations of seven heavy metals and other associated indicators (TC, TN, TP, and OM) were measured at 12 sites and analyzed by Pearson correlation (PC) and principal component analyses (PCA). The average concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb were 70.72, 27.88, 31.35, 115.70, 27.77, 0.23, and 29.62 mg/kg, respectively, with significant spatial differences occurring between some elements. Igeo values established the ranked order of heavy metal pollutant concentrations in SPM as As > Cd > Zn > Cu > Pb > Cr > Ni. Correlation analysis (CA) showed that Zn had a strong correlation with Cu and Pb. Significant positive correlations were found between TC, TN, TP, and Cu. Three element pairs, Zn-Cd, Cr-Cu, and Cr-Ni, were also found to have strong correlations. Zn, Cu, and Ni were mainly introduced by human activities including urban industrial sewage discharge (such as metallurgy and electroplating industrial wastewater), agricultural drainage, and landfill wastewater, while Cr mainly originated from natural processes like mineral weathering and atmospheric precipitation. This information on the concentration, risk, and sources of SPM in Beiyun River provides an important reference for the reduction of heavy metal pollution in SPM in a typical river in the Haihe River Basin (China).

Abstract:Nutrients and heavy metals (HM) in the sediment have an impact on microbial diversity and community structure. In this study, the distribution characteristics of nutrients, HM, and microbial community in the sediments along the Longsha River, a tributary of the Pearl River (or Zhu Jiang), China were investigated by analyzing samples from 11 sites. On the basis of the HM-contamination level, the 11 sampling sites were divided into three groups to explore the changes in microbial communities at different ecological risk levels. Results indicated that nutrient concentrations were higher near farmlands and residential lands, while the ecological risk of HM at the 11 sampling sites was from high to low as S10 > S2 > S9 > S6 > S11 > S7 > S5 > S8 > S3 > S4 > S1. Among these HM, Cu, Cr, and Ni had intense ecological risks. In addition, the results of Variance Partitioning Analysis (VPA) revealed a higher contribution of HM (35.93%) to microbial community variation than nutrients (12.08%) and pH (4.08%). Furthermore, the HM-tolerant microbial taxa (Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Romboutsia, norank_o__Gaiellales, and etc.) were the dominant genera, and they were more dynamic around industrial lands, while microbes involved in the C, N, and S cycles (e.g., Smithella, Thiobacillus, Dechloromonas, Bacter oidetes_vadinHA17, and Syntrophorhabdus) were inhibited by HM, while their abundance was lower near industrial lands and highway but higher around residential lands. A three-unit monitoring program of land-use types, pollutants, and microbial communities was proposed. These results provide a new perspective on the control of riparian land-use types based on contaminants and microbes, and different microbial community response patterns may provide a reference for contaminant control in sediments with intensive industrial activities.

Analysis and potential ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in surface sediments of the freshwater ecosystem in Zhenjiang City, China

Abstract:Heavy metals contamination in freshwater ecosystems has drawn attention worldwide. It is necessary to investigate heavy metals content and assess their ecological risk in order to protect the aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we collected surface sediment samples from the freshwater ecosystem of the city of Zhenjiang, in China, in both winter and summer. Then, we analyzed the seasonal and spatial distribution patterns of lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu). The contamination factor (CF), enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index ( I geo ), and potential ecological risk ( E r i ) were jointly used to assess the pollution degree and the ecological risk posed to the freshwater ecosystem by the aforementioned elements. Multivariate statistical analysis, including Pearson's correlation and principal component analysis and cluster analysis, were used to identify potential sources of the investigated metals in this research area. Study results showed that: (1) the average concentrations values were 1.81 mg/kg and 1.15 mg/kg for Cd, 55.3 mg/kg and 62.2 mg/kg for Cu, 88.0 mg/kg and 52.5 mg/kg for Cr, 27.3 mg/kg and 22.8 mg/kg for Pb, 87.0 mg/kg and 271 mg/kg for Zn, in winter and summer, respectively. Amongst the investigated elements, the average concentrations of Cd, Cu, Cr, and Pb, were above the local background values in winter, whereas, Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations were higher than the background values in Zhenjiang; (2) The CF and EF indicated that Cd had a high contamination degree and a significant enrichment compare to others investigated metals in the surface sediment of in this research area. (3) Cd posed moderate, considerable, or very high ecological risks in different sites, while the other elements (i.e., Cu, Cr, Pb, and Zn) presented a low degree of ecological risk. (4) Multivariate statistical analyses results indicated Pb, Cu, and Zn had similar geochemical characteristics, while, Cd and Cr had significant differences with the above elements. Therefore, Pb, Cu, and Zn probably originate from the same sources, while Cd and Cr might have mixed sources, including both natural sources and human activities. Overall, more attention should be paid to Cd for risk assessment in the current study area. The findings of this study provide fundamental information for the evaluation and management of the heavy metals investigated in the freshwater ecosystem of Zhenjiang.
Identification of toxic metal contamination in surface sediments of the Xiaoqing River under a long-term perspective (1996-2020): Risks, sources and driving factors

Abstract:The contamination of sediments by toxic metals poses a significant threat to both river ecosystems and human health. In this study, the geo-accumulation index (Igeo), biotoxicity evaluation method, and potential ecological risk index (RI) were employed to analyze the contamination level, biotoxicity risk, and potential ecological risk of toxic metals in surface sediments of the Xiaoqing River. To identify toxic metal sources, Spearman correlation and principal component analysis with multiple linear regression analysis (PCA-MLR) were employed. Additionally, redundancy analysis (RDA) was utilized to investigate potential driving factors affecting toxic metal accumulation in sediments. The results revealed that the levels of the five investigated metals (Cr, Pb, As, Hg, and Cd) showed constant fluctuations during the period 1996-2020. The midstream was found to be more polluted than the upstream and downstream. In the research area, Hg was identified as the primary contaminant with high levels of contamination, posing a biotoxicity risk and potential ecological risk. Pollution sources were identified for two periods: A (1996-2010) and B (2011-2020), with industrial, agricultural, traffic, and natural sources being the main contributors. During period A, industrial sources accounted for the highest proportion (40.8%), followed by agricultural sources (36.6%), and geological natural sources (22.6%). During period B, agricultural sources accounted for the highest proportion (42%), followed by industrial and traffic sources (32.4%), and geological natural sources (25.6%). The distribution of toxic metals in the basin was significantly influenced by water pH, sediment organic matter, population density, and per capita GDP. The study results provide fundamental data for preventing pollution and managing water resources contaminated with toxic metals in the sediments of the Xiaoqing River in Jinan. Additionally, it serves as a reference for analyzing related ecological and environmental issues in the basin.

Abstract:Literature lacked in providing a comprehensive research on heavy metal detection in aquatic, biological and sedimentary states of rivers. The present study was imparted with all these three components of the river. Heavy metal toxicity or pollution index was used as a tool for ecological risk assessment by considering the single state studies conducted by many researchers. An intensive ecological risk assessment model was constructed and heavy metals were indicated as a serious threat to the environment. The model was applied to determining five toxic heavy metals in three states of the Songhua River. According to the ecological risk index, heavy metal pollution in three phases was categorized as aquatic>biological>sedimentary, while the overall descending order of heavy metal ecological risk index was as Cd>Hg>As>Pb>Cr. Cd and Hg were selected as the priority pollutants of Songhua River.

Abstract:The detrimental effects of heavy metal accumulation on both ecosystems and public health have raised widespread concern. Source-specific risk assessment is crucial for developing effective strategies to prevent and control heavy metal contamination in surface water. This study aims to investigate the contamination characteristics of heavy metals in the Yangtze River Basin, identifying the pollution sources, assessing the risk levels, and further evaluating the health risks to humans. The results indicated that the average concentrations of heavy metals were ranked as follows: zinc (Zn) > arsenic (As) > copper (Cu) > chromium (Cr) > cadmium (Cd) > nickel (Ni) > lead (Pb), with average concentrations of 38.02 μg/L, 4.34 μg/L, 2.53 μg/L, 2.10 μg/L, 1.17 μg/L, 0.84 μg/L, and 0.32 μg/L, respectively, all below the WHO 2017 standards for safe drinking water. The distribution trend indicates higher concentrations in the upper and lower reaches and lower concentrations in the mid-reaches of the river. By integrating the Absolute Principal Component Scores-Multiple Linear Regression (APCS-MLR) receptor model and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model, the main sources of heavy metals were identified as industrial activities (APCS-MLR: 41.3 %; PMF: 42.1 %), agricultural activities (APCS-MLR: 30.1 %; PMF: 27.4 %), and unknown mix sources (APCS-MLR: 29.1 %; PMF: 30.4 %). The calculation of the hazard index (HI) for both children and adults was <1, indicating no non-carcinogenic or carcinogenic risks. Based on the source-specific risk assessment, agricultural activities contribute the most to non-carcinogenic risks, while industrial activities pose the greatest contribution to carcinogenic risks. This study offers a reference for monitoring heavy metals and controlling health risks to residents, and provides crucial evidence for the utilization and protection of surface water in the Yangtze River Basin.

Abstract:Excessive concentrations of toxic metals are a global threat to aquatic systems. Taking a typical tributary (Zijiang River, ZR) of the midstream of the Yangtze River as the research area, the concentration distribution and chemical fractions occurrence characteristics of five toxic metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) were analyzed, their potential sources were explored, and their contamination and ecological risk was assessed. In the surface waters and sediments, there were high concentrations of Zn, a low concentration of Cd, and small spatial differences in concentration among the upstream, midstream, and downstream. In terms of speciation, Cd mainly existed in the acid-soluble fraction, Pb mainly existed in the reducible fraction, and Cr, Cu, and Zn mainly existed in the residue fraction. The potential sources in surface waters and sediments were determined to be industrial emissions and agricultural non-point sources through the absolute principal component scores–multiple linear regression model (APCS–MLR). Based on the assessment results of total concentration and speciation, Cd was the typical contamination element in ZR sediments. In addition, the secondary phase enrichment factor (SPEF) based on speciation underestimates the degree of Pb contamination, and the ecological risk of Zn assessed by the ratio of secondary phase and primary phase (RSP) and the risk assessment code (RAC) was higher than that of Cr, which was inconsistent with the results based on total concentrations. SOM and Al/Fe/Mn cycles in sediments influenced the geochemical behavior of toxic metals.

Abstract:We investigated the contents and distributions of nutrients and heavy metals in sediment from the Yitong River. The main aims were to analyze heavy metals speciation and evaluate their bioavailability, in order to assess the risks they pose to both ecosystem and human health. The average total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), organic matter (OM) and Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn contents were 1747.69, 895.58, 75103, 0.19, 75.64, 33.61, 47.17, 56.65 and 159.91 mg kg−1, respectively. Results from acid-extraction fraction analysis showed that the proportions of Cd and Zn ranged from 3.78% to 30.20% and 5.31% to 30.74%, respectively. Health risk assessment model showed the risk index values of children and adults were 0.412 and 0.059, respectively, indicating a minimal threat to human health. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed that TN and TP may have similar sources and could be attributed to combined sewer overflows, while Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn were primarily derived from industrial pollution sources. Toxicity bioassay tests demonstrated that the majority of sediment samples were classified as non-toxic. However, 25% of the samples showed slight toxicity towards Vibrio qinghaiensis Q67, while 7% of the samples exhibited slight toxicity towards Daphnia magna. Based on these findings, it is necessary to implement pollution control measures and conduct assessments of aquatic ecological risks in sediments from urban rivers. These results can be used to develop effective strategies for the management and governance of aquatic sediments.

Abstract:Long-term retention and accumulation of heavy metals in surface water and sediment pose a great threat to the sustainable development of aquatic ecosystems and human health. In this research, macrozoobenthos, and surface water and sediment heavy metal (Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cd, and As) samples were collected from 23 sites in the upper and middle reaches of the Heihe River in the summers of 2019–2020. The interrelationships between heavy metals and macrozoobenthos were analyzed by Pearson correlation analysis and redundancy analysis (RDA), and the contamination level and potential ecological risk of the heavy metals in surface water and sediments were assessed by comprehensive pollution index (WQI), single potential ecological risk index (Eridocumentclass[12pt]{minimal}usepackage{amsmath}usepackage{wasysym}usepackage{amsfonts}usepackage{amssymb}usepackage{amsbsy}usepackage{mathrsfs}usepackage{upgreek}setlength{oddsidemargin}{-69pt}egin{document}$${E}_{r}^{i}$$end{document}), and sediment quality guideline-quotient (SQG-Q), respectively. The results showed that the level of heavy metal pollution in the surface water of the Heihe River was extremely low, but the contents of Mn and Pb exceeded the third class of surface water environmental quality standards (GB 3838–2002). The spatial distribution of heavy metals in surface sediments were significantly different, and the average concentration of 8 heavy metals exceeded the background values of Gansu Province. Meanwhile, the pollution level of heavy metals in surface sediments was high pollution, and the ecological risk level was moderate risk. In addition, the distribution coefficients of Cr and Cd were low, indicating that Cr and Cd were easily released from the surface sediments, causing secondary pollution. In terms of the source of the heavy metals, Cu, As, Zn, Cr, and Ni mainly came from industrial and agricultural wastewaters, Pb was from the mining industry and natural sources, and Mn and Cd mainly came from tailings and their landfill leachate. Basommatophora and Araneae can be used as potential indicator organisms for heavy metal pollution in surface water, and Basommatophora, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, and Araneae can be used as indicator species for heavy metal pollution in surface sediments. The study showed that macroinvertebrate community characteristics had a sensitive response to heavy metals in the surface waters and sediments of the Heihe River, which can be used to evaluate the pollution status of heavy metals in inland rivers.

Abstract:Heavy metal speciation and the associated ecological risks were investigated, using a European Community Bureau of Reference sequential extraction procedure, in sediments from the residential, mixed (residential and industrial), and agricultural areas of rural rivers in southern Jiangsu Province, China. Compared with the background values in Jiangsu Province soils, Cd was the metal with the highest contamination level, especially in the mixed area, followed by Cu and Zn. In the sediment samples from the agricultural area, the heavy metal concentrations were no more than two times greater than the background values. There were higher proportions of Cd in the acid-soluble fraction, Cr in the residual fraction, and Pb in the reducible fraction in the three areas. The heavy metal mobility was mainly controlled by the acid-soluble and reducible fractions. Cd could pose extremely high risks to the environment. In addition, the risks of heavy metal to the environment in the three areas followed the order: mixed area > residential area > agricultural area. Furthermore, a risk assessment code analysis showed that most of the sediment samples were classified as being of high to very high risk in the residential and mixed areas because of their Cd, Ni, and Zn concentrations. Heavy metal pollution in the residential and mixed areas is generally serious, and immediate remediation measures need to be taken.

Abstract:Heavy metal (HM) contamination of agro-ecosystems has raised great attention across the world due to the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization. Importantly, HMs have been consistently entering the food webs, imposing great risks on public health. However, previous studies have focused more on large-scale areas. Exemplarily, some typical areas (e.g., riverside farmlands) receive insufficient attention, but they may have a higher ecological risk. In this study, we used a series of indices to evaluate risks, including single factor index, Nemerow index, geological accumulation index, potential ecological risk index, risk assessment code, etc. Based on the field investigation, we systematically analyzed the pollution characteristics and ecological risks of five HMs (i.e., Pb, Cu, Zn, Cr, and Ni) in the typical vegetable soil and its irrigation sediment in Xijiang River Basin, Guangdong, China. The results indicate that the pH values of the soil and sediment are mainly neutral or slightly acidic. Moreover, large-scale natural sources may have the effect on the soil and sediment, among which storm runoff and scouring of the river may be main natural factors of HM activation. And importantly, there was a migration cycle (with the in-out trait) for the main non-residual forms of HMs between riverside soil and sediment. According to the principal component analysis (PCA), HMs may be mainly affected by anthropogenic sources. Specifically, PC1 may be related to transportation and agricultural machineries, and PC2 may be related to pesticides and fertilizers. Also, according to risk assessment code and the ration of secondary phase to primary phase, these meant high proportion of the bio-available forms of HMs. Conversely, Pearson correlation coefficient between bioavailable metal index and the sum of toxic unit was not high, which was related to low contents of the bio-available HMs. And though, these indices may show great differences due to different method focuses, an important suggestion is that integrating all the methods can receive more comprehensive results of ecological risks. According to the bioavailable metal index, the bio-availability of HMs decreases in the following order: river sediment (3.69 ± 1.24) > riverside farmland soil (2.28 ± 0.61) > inside-dyke farmland soil (2.26 ± 1.24) > reservoir sediment (1.99 ± 0.18). Besides, comprehensive evaluation indicates that Cu and Zn pose the greater environmental risks as they have the highest effective content, bioavailability, and mobility. Thus, developing high-tech environmental monitoring, properly purifing irrigation water, and improving the drainage systems are a necessity for these HMs.
