Abstract:The content of noise, vibration, and harshness is an important part of the undergraduate mechanical engineering program education to prepare students ready for their future career, and it has received great attention from educators. Since course content in noise, vibration, and harshness usually requires more mathematical background knowledge and skills such as problem-solving in differential equations and linear algebra, students at the undergraduate level usually experience difficulty in the problem-solving work in noise, vibration, and harshness, though they have already completed the pre-requisite mathematics courses. In this paper, a new schedule and course content design for noise and vibration courses are introduced. By embedding active learning and design during projects, the students were able to obtain a better understanding of the concept of acoustics and vibration, as well as applying the knowledge from lectures to labs so they can connect the learning to real-world applications. Four projects are introduced and explained. To evaluate the effectiveness of the course, student outcomes are assessed and discussed.
Detection of cerebrospinal fluid leakage by specific measurement of transferrin glycoforms

Abstract:A simple and rapid detection of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage would benefit spine surgeons making critical postoperative decisions on patient care. We have assessed novel approaches to selectively determine CSF β2‐transferrin (β2TF), an asialo‐transferrin (aTF) biomarker, without interference from serum sialo‐transferrin (sTF) in test samples. First, we performed mild periodate oxidation to selectively generate aldehyde groups in sTF for capture with magnetic hydrazide microparticles, and selective removal with a magnetic separator. Using this protocol sTF was selectively removed from mixtures of CSF and serum containing CSF aTF (β2TF) and serum sTF, respectively. Second, a two‐step enzymatic method was developed with neuraminidase and galactose oxidase for generating aldehyde groups in sTF present in CSF and serum mixtures for magnetic hydrazide microparticle capture. After selectively removing sTF from mixtures of CSF and serum, ELISA could detect significant TF signal only in CSF, while the TF signal in serum was negligible. The new approach for selective removal of only sTF in test samples will be promising for the required intervention by a spine surgeon.

Abstract:The acoustics community at Purdue University will be described with special emphasis on the graduate program in Mechanical Engineering (ME). Purdue is home to around 30 faculty who study various aspects of acoustics and related disciplines, and so, there are many classes to choose from as graduate students structure their plans of study to complement their research activities and to broaden their understanding of the various aspects of acoustics. In Mechanical Engineering, the primary emphasis is on understanding noise generation, noise propagation, and the impact of noise on people, as well as development of noise control strategies, experimental techniques, and noise and noise impact prediction tools. The ME acoustics research is conducted at the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories, which houses several large acoustics chambers that are designed to facilitate testing of a wide array mechanical systems, reflecting the Laboratories’ long history of industry-relevant research. Complementing the acoustics research, Purdue has vibrations, dynamics, and electromechanical systems research programs and is home to a collaborative group of engineering and psychology professors who study human perception and its integration into engineering design. There are also very strong ties between ME acoustics faculty and faculty in Biomedical Engineering and Speech Language and Hearing Sciences.

Dr. Lily Wang and Dr. Erica Ryherd work on architectural acoustics and noise control topics (http://nebraskaacousticsgroup.org ) within the Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction, based at UNL's Scott Campus in Omaha. Dr. Jinying Zhu in Civil and Environmental Engineering (also based on UNL’s Scott Campus in Omaha) is active in structural acoustics, using ultrasonic waves for concrete evaluation (https://engineering.unl.edu/cee/faculty/jinying-zhu/). Dr. Joseph Turner in Mechanical and Materials Engineering (based at UNL’s City Campus in Lincoln) focuses on ultrasound propagation through complex media for quantitative characterization of materials/microstructure (http://quisp.unl.edu ). This poster presents the graduate-level acoustics courses and lab facilities at UNL within the College of Engineering, and highlights the research interests and achievements of our faculty, graduates, and students. Abstract:Graduate studies in acoustics at BYU prepare students for industry, research, and academia by complementing in-depth coursework with publishable research. Coursework provides students with a foundation in acoustical principles, practices and measurement skills, including a experimental techniques and technical writing. Labs across the curriculum cover calibration, directivity, scattering, absorption, laser Doppler vibrometry, experimental methods for dynamic structures, lumped-element mechanical systems, equivalent circuit modeling, arrays, filters, room acoustics, active noise control, and near-field acoustical holography. Recent thesis and dissertation topics include active noise control, directivity, room acoustics, energy-based acoustics, time reversal, nondestructive evaluation, vibration and acoustics of aerospace vehicles, biomedical applications, flow-based acoustics, voice production, aeroacoustics, sound propagation modeling, nonlinear propagation, high-amplitude noise analyses, machine and deep learning applied to ambient noise level prediction, crowd noise interpretation, and underwater acoustic source localization, and ocean environment classification. Graduate students are expected to present research at professional meetings and publish in peer-reviewed acoustics journals. Abstract:The acoustics in the Department of Acoustic Science and Engineering, Nanjing University, has been evaluated as a state key subject for cultivating acoustic talents from undergraduate students to post-doctoral fellows. Our department prepares undergraduates for entry-level positions in the acoustic field and further education at the master's level. Our educational programs are organized around two overlapping areas: Acoustics and Acoustical signal processing. Core courses include fundamentals of acoustics, acoustic measurement, and acoustic transducer. A series of advanced undergraduate courses have also been developed to provide students with formal training in acoustics, including: electronic acoustics, ultrasonics, architectural acoustics, audio signal processing, active noise control, and etc. The goal of this program is to prepare students with both solid foundation in acoustic science and capabilities in acoustic engineering.
Acoustics@Home: Laboratories and student-led projects conducted for an undergraduate engineering experimentation course during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Hands-on, project-based learning was difficult to achieve in online classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Engineering Experimentation course at Cooper Union teaches third-year mechanical engineering students practical experimental skills to measure physical phenomenon, which typically requires in-person laboratory classes. In response to COVID, a low-cost, at-home laboratory kit was devised to give students tools to conduct experiments. The kit included a microcontroller acting as a data-acquisition device and custom software to facilitate data transfer. A speed of sound laboratory was designed with the kit to teach skills in data collection, signal processing, and error analysis. The students derived the sound speed by placing two microphones a known distance apart and measuring the time for an impulsive signal to travel from one to the other. The students reported sound speeds from 180.7-477.8 m/s in a temperature range from 273.7-315.9 K. While these reported speeds contained a large amount of error, the exercise allowed the students to learn how to account for sources of error within experiments. This paper also presents final projects designed by the students at home, an impedance tube and two Doppler shift experiments, that exhibit successful and effective low-cost solutions to demonstrate and measure acoustic phenomenon.

Abstract:Fundamental engineering and physics topics in an acoustics course can be made more relevant and interesting when applied to problems involving real-world scenarios, both from technical apparatus and from the natural world. This presentation will highlight several “fun” homework and test problems inspired by reading acoustics journal papers or data collected during a classroom demonstration. For example: tree crickets cut holes in leaves to convert the ineffective sound radiation from a dipole source into a much more effective baffled monopole. Spiders locate prey on their webs by comparing arrival times between transverse and longitudinal waves in web fibers; a related problem can be modeled as a fixed-fixed string with a point-mass load (originally posed by Lord Rayleigh). A compound string presents a challenging boundary value problem, with theoretical results easily compared to animations and physical demonstrations and application to musical instruments. Deceptively “simple” demonstrations of standing waves in open pipes and Helmholtz resonators can be used to estimate damping losses and mass loading. Measured data from a tuning fork spectrum can lead students to evaluate appropriate boundary condition choices. Additional examples will be discussed as time allows.

Experiences From the First Offering of a Stringed Instrument Manufacture and Testing Course

Abstract:It is a constant challenge to present technical course content in a way that is attractive to undergraduate technology students. They tend to be focused on the immediate utility of the information and are often skeptical of abstract subjects. With this in mind, a course has been developed that uses the manufacture of stringed instruments as a means of teaching basic concepts of dynamic structural response, acoustic-structure coupling and manufacturing processes. A group of 12 students recently participated in a senior level engineering technology course in which they designed and built 12 nominally identical instruments. Guided by a faculty member who is also an experienced luthier (a maker of stringed instruments), they made production fixtures, fabricated the individual components, assembled the instruments and tested them. The results were used to tune discrete math models that captured the first two resonant frequencies of coupled-air structure interaction. Since reducing build variation is a primary activity in production environments, one measure of merit for the class was to produce identical instruments. Build variation was characterized by the variation in the measured resonant frequencies of instruments and of the identified mode parameters from the discrete models. The class has generated significant student interest and promises to be a compelling venue for teaching important technical concepts. It is, however, dependent on an initial investment in tools, materials and faculty experience.
Telecom, Electroacoustics and Audio (TEA) Education in Two Prestigious Universities in Taiwan

Abstract:This presentation gives an overview of the acoustics education by the author's 21-year career in National Chiao-Tung University and National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. Although it is generally recognized that acoustics is an “old” subject in classical physics, it finds many new applications in the modern world. The paradigm of acoustic education of the author is to gear the domain knowledge of acoustics to the needs of main-stream industries in Taiwan, including Computer, Community, Consumer electronics and Car, the so-called 4C industries, with emphasis placed upon telecom acoustics, eletroacoustics and audio signal processing (TEA) involved in the 4C products. To meet the ever changing challenges, a multidisciplinary approach including signal processing and control system is exploited, in addition to acoustics, in the pedagogic methodology. It is hoped that, with these new perspectives, classical acoustics can be rejuvenated within unified framework. In the author's career in education, more than 100 (including 30 in JASA) journal papers have been published, an institute of Sound and Music Innovative Technology (SMIT) and the Telecom acoustics, Eletroacoustics and Audio signal processing (TEA) laboratory have been launched in NCTU and NTHU, respectively, and a monograph on acoustic array systems is currently in preparation.
Effects of lidocaine administration on hemodynamics and cytokine responses to endotoxemia in rabbits

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the effects of lidocaine administration on hemodynamics and cytokine concentrations in Escherichia coli endotoxemia in rabbits. Design: Randomized, prospective laboratory study. Setting: University laboratory. Subjects: Thirty‐two Japanese rabbits anesthetized with urethane and ventilated mechanically. Interventions: Animals were randomly assigned to one of four groups: endotoxemic controls (n = 8), receiving intravenous E. coli endotoxin (0.5 mg/kg bolus) via the mesenteric vein; laparotomy controls (n = 8), treated identically to the endotoxemic controls except for the substitution of 0.9% saline for endotoxin; lidocaine controls (n = 8), treated identically to the laparotomy controls with the addition of intravenous lidocaine (3 mg/kg bolus followed by infusion at 2 mg/kg/hr) administered immediately after the injection of 0.9% saline; and lidocaine‐treated rabbits (n = 8), treated identically to the endotoxemic controls with the addition of intravenous lidocaine (3 mg/kg bolus followed by infusion at 2 mg/kg/hr) administered immediately after the injection of endotoxin. Measurements and Main Results: We compared the cardiac output, systemic vascular resistance, blood gases, and plasma cytokine concentrations (tumor necrosis factor, interleukin [IL]‐6, and IL‐8) for each group. After endotoxin injection, the mean arterial pressure, cardiac output, and systemic vascular resistance decreased progressively in the endotoxemic controls. At 4 hrs after injection, all of the variables except the heart rate and central venous pressure were lower in the endotoxemic controls than in the other groups. At 4 hrs after endotoxin injection, both IL‐6 and IL‐8 concentrations increased in all groups. However, the mean concentrations of IL‐6 and IL‐8 in the endotoxemic controls significantly exceeded those in the other groups. No significant differences existed between the laparotomy controls and lidocaine‐treated rabbits. Conclusions: Lidocaine had a profound inhibitory effect on the hemodynamic and cytokine responses to endotoxemia when it was administered immediately after exposure to endotoxin. Our results demonstrate the potential usefulness of lidocaine as an anti‐inflammatory agent in endotoxemia.
A Critical Survey of Environmental Content in United States Undergraduate Mechanical Engineering Curricula

Abstract:This survey examines how mechanical engineers are being prepared to be responsible stewards of the environment by offering a multi-channeled look at a diverse collection of twelve US colleges and universities, with connections to the larger global context. This study enumerates the external influences of professional organizations, those responsible for program accreditation (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)), professional conduct (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), and licensure (National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying, National Society of Professional Engineers). At the curricular level, this study presents current mechanical engineering curricula via core courses (required at most institutions) and non-core courses (required at a minority of institutions or elective courses). The curriculum study identifies fifteen core courses and uses the Open Syllabus Project and online bookstores to identify a representative textbook and classify the environmental content therein. Immediate results show the environment receiving sparse treatment in core course textbooks, institutions having zero environment-focused degree requirements, and a tendency towards offering electives that are narrowly focused on green technologies. Elective offerings mirror ABET’s recent move away from emphasizing the “broad education necessary to understand the impact” of engineering solutions to instead “consider the impact of” engineering solutions in an environmental context. Overall, the environmental education mechanical engineers are receiving is insufficient in amount and lacking in scientific and ethical foundation. Ideally, every mechanical engineering program should include coordinated environmental content throughout the curriculum and require at least one course that teaches both environmental design principles and the importance of environmental stewardship. A novel approach eschews the typical artes mechanicae course structure to teach environmental stewardship in the artes liberales educational tradition, emphasizing multi-dimensional thinking by employing great books style discussions of seminal scientific, ethical, and technological works.

Project-based learning through sensor characterization in a musical acoustics course

Abstract:Project-based learning engages students in practical activities related to course content and has been demonstrated to improve academic performance. Due to its reported benefits, this form of active learning was incorporated with an ongoing research project into an introductory, graduate-level Musical Acoustics course at the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University. Students applied concepts from the course to characterize a contact sensor with a polymer diaphragm for musical instrument recording. Assignments throughout the semester introduced students to completing a literature review, planning an experiment, collecting and analyzing data, and presenting results. While students were given broad goals to understand the performance of the contact sensor compared to traditional microphones, they were allowed independence in determining the specific methods used. The efficacy of the course framework and research project was assessed with student feedback provided through open-ended prompts and Likert-type survey questions. Overall, the students responded positively to the project-based learning and demonstrated mastery of the course learning objectives. The work provides a possible framework for instructors considering using project-based learning through research in their own course designs.
Acoustics standards and noise control engineering education

Abstract:Acoustics standards are useful resources for noise control engineering education. Most textbooks on noise control engineering cover the theoretical principles and concepts of acoustics and noise control and discuss only some acoustics standards. To make noise control engineering education more valuable for students and practitioners, more acoustics standards should be introduced in noise control engineering education textbooks and during lectures, and the relationship between the fundamental principles and concepts of acoustics and these standards should be discussed. This kind of noise control engineering education program will also benefit non-acoustic engineers who engage in noise control practice following certain acoustics standards, as it is of great importance for these engineers to have a basic knowledge of noise generation and propagation as well as an understanding of the principles of noise control.
Teaching an advanced undergraduate acoustics laboratory without a laboratory: Course developments enabling teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:This paper describes ongoing developments to an advanced laboratory course at Kettering University, which is targeted to students in engineering and engineering physics and emphasizes theoretical, computational, and experimental components in the context of airborne acoustics and modal testing [cf. D. A. Russell and D. O. Ludwigsen, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 131, 2515-2524 (2012)]. These developments have included a transition to electronic laboratory notebooks and cloud-based computing resources, incorporation of updated hardware and software, and creation and testing of a multiple-choice assessment instrument for the course. When Kettering University suddenly shifted to exclusively remote teaching in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of these changes proved to be essential for enabling rapid adaptation to a situation in which a laboratory was not available for the course. Laboratory activities were rewritten by crowdsourcing archived data, videos were incorporated to illustrate dynamic phenomena, and computer simulations were used to retain student interactivity. The comparison of multiple measures, including the assessment instrument, team-based grades on project papers, and individual grades on final exams, indicates that most students were successful at learning the course material and adapting to work on team-based projects in the midst of challenging remote learning conditions.

Abstract:Airborne noise from operating equipment onboard offshore vessels negatively affects the crew members working and staying on the vessel for extended periods of time. However, many students pursuing a marine engineering degree are unequipped to handle this problem because acoustics and its application to marine systems are currently not a part of many curricula. In addition, difficulties in teaching acoustics in the marine engineering degree course arise from the lack of knowledge and skills among teaching staff from various mechanical, naval marine, architecture, and offshore engineering backgrounds. Hence, a new curricula model using a partial problem-based learning (PBL) approach is proposed to improve student learning in room acoustic. Studying room acoustics using open-source software such as PsySound3, and AARAE provides students with hands-on experience in room acoustics modeling and simulation in the marine engineering degree programme. The overall feedback from the students indicated that following the partial PBL initially was quite challenging. Some instructors felt that PBL training was insufficient to improve their understanding of PBL activities. However, most students and instructors gave positive feedback on using information technologies to create more interest in learning and teaching acoustics.
Towards an Acoustically Accessible Campus: A Case Study of the Acoustic Conditions of an Australian University

Abstract:University is an important stage of learning for students, so it is vital that higher education spaces are acoustically accessible to all and are places that promote equity and inclusion. The aim of this study was to measure the unoccupied noise levels and reverberation times of all of the classrooms in a typical Australian university to assess acoustic accessibility with a view to planning for a more accessible campus. A total of 166 classrooms were measured and categorised into good, ok, and poor classrooms according to the Macquarie University (MQU) Design Guidelines Review Performance Standards. Regarding unoccupied noise levels, 52% of classrooms were within the recommended < 35 dBA limit. Regarding reverberation times, 65% of classrooms were within the recommended 0.4–0.6 s limit. Finally, 40% of classrooms met both the noise level and reverberation time limit. The plans at the university to incorporate these findings to make the campus more acoustically accessible are discussed, as well as future research avenues so that all students and teachers can flourish.

Abstract:Noise pollution presents itself in an invisible, dangerous, and permanent way, with long-lasting consequences. Acoustic discomfort within the school environment affects not only human health but also the quality of verbal communication and student performance. An appropriate acoustic environment contributes to the improvement of the teaching and learning process in addition to enhancing the interpersonal relationships involved in the educational process. Moreover, it is important to introduce acoustics-related subjects, such as environmental noise, into high school science and physics syllabi. As urban noise is a global concern and scope, students may face the need to make decisions related to environmental practices in their future lives, such as those concerning comfortable sound levels. Articulating the STS Approach with Environmental Education, we seek to combine the interdisciplinary content of Acoustics with an environmental awareness that goes beyond mere conservationist reductionism. In addition to the mandatory curricular knowledge, STS Education adopts a scientific and technological education based on a social construction that is culturally and socially contextualized.
A correlation of antioxidants and lipid peroxidation between maternal andcord blood in full term and preterm deliveries.

Abstract:Free radicals are implicated in several diseases of prematurity. The study aimed to correlate plasma antioxidants levels and lipid peroxidation between maternal and cord blood in normal and preterm deliveries. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Reduced Glutathione (GSH) and Uric acid were the measured antioxidants while Malondialdehyde (MDA) was an index of lipid peroxidation. 32 mothers who delivered preterm and their babies were cases and 32 full term mothers and their babies were controls. Malondialdehyde levels in maternal blood were higher in preterm pregnancies *(7.47±1.13/ml) than full term pregnancies *(3.97±0.0.86nmol/ml). Mean Malondialdehyde in preterm babies *(7.38±1.06nmol/ml) were higher than full term babies *(4.46±0.86nmol/ml). Mean maternal SOD and GSH values were lower in preterm *(SOD;2.57±0.49units/ml and GSH; 3.84±0.55μmol/g Hb) than full term deliveries * (SOD; 3.77±0.76 units/ml and GSH; 5.38±0.77μmol/g Hb). Mean cord blood SOD and GSH values were lower in preterm * (SOD 2.40±0.44nmol/ml & GSH 3.00± 0.63μmol/g Hb) than full term deliveries * (SOD 3.90 ±0.90 units /ml and GSH 4.80 ± 1.20 μmol/ g Hb).Uric Acid levels showed no significant change in both groups. Positive correlation was established with MDA, between maternal and cord blood in both full term and preterm deliveries .Positive correlation was established with SOD levels and GSH levels between maternal and cord blood in both groups. Lipid peroxidation is accelerated in prematurity. Fetal antioxidants may decrease if maternal antioxidants are low. Free radicals damage the tissues of the newborn. Antioxidant supplementation to mothers at high risk category for delivering premature, may be beneficial. (* Mean ± SD)

Abstract:There is a one academic year theoretical acoustics course for postgraduate students in the Department of Acoustic Science and Engineering of Nanjing University. The course introduces the physical principles and mathematical methods for acoustics in fluids, and the main objective is to deepen understanding of acoustical principle for postgraduate students in the field of acoustics following their undergraduate fundamental acoustics course. The contents include acoustic waves in ideal fluids, acoustic radiation in infinite space, acoustic scattering and diffractions, propagation and radiation of acoustic waves in dust, acoustic fields in enclosed space, acoustic waves in dissipative fluids, acoustic waves in layered fluid, acoustic waves in moving fluids, propagation of acoustic waves with finite amplitude, and effects generated by acoustic waves with finite amplitude. More details can be found in the book title “Principle of Acoustics in Fluids” published by Science Press in China in 2012.
