Abstract:The ultra-relativistic Euler equations for an ideal gas are described in terms of the pressure, the spatial part of the dimensionless four-velocity and the particle density. Radially symmetric solutions of these equations are studied in two and three space dimensions. Of particular interest in the solutions are the formation of shock waves and a pressure blow up. For the investigation of these phenomena we develop a one-dimensional scheme using radial symmetry and integral conservation laws. We compare the numerical results with solutions of multi-dimensional high-order numerical schemes for general initial data in two space dimensions. The presented test cases and results may serve as interesting benchmark tests for multi-dimensional solvers.

A variational front-tracking method for multiphase flow with triple junctions

Abstract:We present and analyze a variational front-tracking method for a sharp-interface model of multiphase flow. The fluid interfaces between different phases are represented by curve networks in two space dimensions (2d) or surface clusters in three space dimensions (3d) with triple junctions where three interfaces meet, and boundary points/lines where an interface meets a fixed planar boundary. The model is described by the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations in the bulk domains, with classical interface conditions on the fluid interfaces, and appropriate boundary conditions at the triple junctions and boundary points/lines. We propose a weak formulation for the model, which combines a parametric formulation for the evolving interfaces and an Eulerian formulation for the bulk equations. We employ an unfitted discretization of the coupled formulation to obtain a fully discrete finite element method, where the existence and uniqueness of solutions can be shown under weak assumptions. The constructed method admits an unconditional stability result in terms of the discrete energy. Furthermore, we adapt the introduced method so that an exact volume preservation for each phase can be achieved for the discrete solutions. Numerical examples for three-phase flow and four-phase flow are presented to show the robustness and accuracy of the introduced methods.

Abstract:A new method for interface tracking is presented. The interface representation, based on domain decomposition, provides the interface location explicitly, yet is Eulerian. This allows for well established finite difference methods on uniform grids to be used for the numerics of advecting the interface and other computations. CFL-stable and second order accurate explicit and implicit time-stepping methods are derived. Numerical results are given to substantiate stated convergence properties, as well as convergence in interface curvature and mass conservation. Our method is applied to a boundary integral formulation for Stokes flow, and the resulting integrals are analyzed and treated numerically to second order accuracy. Finally, we embed our method in the familiar immersed boundary- and immersed interface methods for two-phase Navier-Stokes flow.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend several time reversible numerical integrators to solve the Lorentz force equations from second order accuracy to higher order accuracy for relativistic charged particle tracking in electromagnetic fields. A fourth order algorithm is given explicitly and tested with numerical examples. Such high order numerical integrators can significantly save the computational cost by using a larger step size in comparison to the second order integrators.

Abstract:We construct a numerical relativity code based on the Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura (BSSN) formulation for the gravitational quadratic $f(R)$ Starobinsky model. By removing the assumption that the determinant of the conformal 3-metric is unity, we first generalize the BSSN formulation for general $f(R)$ gravity theories in the metric formalism to accommodate arbitrary coordinates for the first time. We then describe the implementation of this formalism to the paradigmatic Starobinsky model. We apply the implementation to three scenarios: the Schwarzschild black hole solution, flat space with non-trivial gauge dynamics, and a massless Klein-Gordon scalar field. In each case, long-term stability and second-order convergence is demonstrated. The case of the massless Klein-Gordon scalar field is used to exercise the additional terms and variables resulting from the $f(R)$ contributions. For this model, we show for the first time that additional damped oscillations arise in the subcritical regime as the system approaches a stable configuration.

A Tetrad-First Approach to Robust Numerical Algorithms in General Relativity

Abstract:General relativistic Riemann solvers are typically complex, fragile and unwieldy, at least in comparison to their special relativistic counterparts. In this paper, we present a new high-resolution shock-capturing algorithm on curved spacetimes that employs a local coordinate transformation at each inter-cell boundary, transforming all primitive and conservative variables into a locally flat spacetime coordinate basis (i.e., the tetrad basis), generalizing previous approaches developed for relativistic hydrodynamics. This algorithm enables one to employ a purely special relativistic Riemann solver, combined with an appropriate post-hoc flux correction step, irrespective of the geometry of the underlying Lorentzian manifold. We perform a systematic validation of the algorithm using the Gkeyll simulation framework for both general relativistic electromagnetism and general relativistic hydrodynamics, highlighting the algorithm's superior convergence and stability properties in each case when compared against standard analytical solutions for black hole magnetosphere and ultra-relativistic black hole accretion problems. However, as an illustration of the generality and practicality of the algorithm, we also apply it to more astrophysically realistic magnetosphere and fluid accretion problems in the limit of high black hole spin, for which standard general relativistic Riemann solvers are often too unstable to produce useful solutions.

Weak* Solutions: A Convergent Front Tracking Scheme

Abstract:We present a variation of the Front Tracking (FT) method for modeling solutions to hyperbolic systems in one space dimension, a Modified FT scheme. Instead of using non-entropic shocks, we approximate simple waves by jumps which exactly match the states, while approximating the wave speed. Our construction makes use of compression curve as well. We work with weak* solutions introduced in \cite{}. Consequently, we are able to analyze residuals rather than errors, and obtain cleaner convergence results. Through this paper, we intend to set up a scheme that is capable of handling strong shocks consistently. We develop this scheme primarily to prove (in a future work) existence of large amplitude solutions of the p-system. Therefore, we treat the p-system more carefully and construct a completely self-sufficient scheme, which has a limit as long as the approximate weak* solutions have uniformly bounded variation.

Abstract:In this paper we develop a new well-balanced discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element scheme with subcell finite volume (FV) limiter for the numerical solution of the Einstein--Euler equations of general relativity based on a first order hyperbolic reformulation of the Z4 formalism. The first order Z4 system, which is composed of 59 equations, is analyzed and proven to be strongly hyperbolic for a general metric. The well-balancing is achieved for arbitrary but a priori known equilibria by subtracting a discrete version of the equilibrium solution from the discretized time-dependent PDE system. Special care has also been taken in the design of the numerical viscosity so that the well-balancing property is achieved. As for the treatment of low density matter, e.g. when simulating massive compact objects like neutron stars surrounded by vacuum, we have introduced a new filter in the conversion from the conserved to the primitive variables, preventing superluminal velocities when the density drops below a certain threshold, and being potentially also very useful for the numerical investigation of highly rarefied relativistic astrophysical flows. Thanks to these improvements, all standard tests of numerical relativity are successfully reproduced, reaching three achievements: (i) we are able to obtain stable long term simulations of stationary black holes, including Kerr black holes with extreme spin, which after an initial perturbation return perfectly back to the equilibrium solution up to machine precision; (ii) a (standard) TOV star under perturbation is evolved in pure vacuum ($\rho$=$p$=0) up to t=1000 with no need to introduce any artificial atmosphere around the star; and, (iii) we solve the head on collision of two punctures black holes, that was previously considered un--tractable within the Z4 formalism.

Strichartz estimates and low regularity solutions of 3D relativistic Euler equations

Abstract:We study the low regularity well-posedness for Cauchy problem of 3D relativistic Euler equations. Firstly, we introduce a new decomposition for relativistic velocity and derive new transport equations for vorticity, which both play a crucial role in energy and Strichartz estimates. According to Smith-Tataru's approach, we then establish a Strichartz estimate of linear wave equations endowed with the acoustic metric. This leads us to prove a complete local well-posedness result if the initial logarithmic enthalpy, velocity, and modified vorticity $(h_0, \bu_0, \bw_0) \in H^s \times H^s \times H^{s_0} (2<s_0<s)$. Therefore, we give an affirmative answer to "Open Problem D" proposed by Disconzi. Moreover, for $(h_0,{\bu}_0,\bw_0) \in H^{2+} \times H^{2+} \times H^2$, by frequency truncation, there is a stronger Strichartz estimate for solutions on a short-time-interval. By semi-classical analysis and induction method, these solutions can be extended from short time intervals to a regular time interval, and a uniform Strichartz estimate with loss of derivatives can be obtained. This allows us to prove the local well-posedness of 3D relativistic equations if $(h_0,{\bu}_0,\bw_0) \in H^{2+} \times H^{2+} \times H^2$.

Efficient solver of relativistic hydrodynamics with implicit Runge-Kutta method

Abstract:We propose a new method to solve the relativistic hydrodynamic equations based on implicit Runge-Kutta methods with a locally optimized fixed-point iterative solver. For numerical demonstration, we implement our idea for ideal hydrodynamics using the one-stage Gauss-Legendre method as an implicit method. The accuracy and computational cost of our new method are compared with those of explicit ones for the (1+1)-dimensional Riemann problem, as well as the (2+1)-dimensional Gubser flow and event-by-event initial conditions for heavy-ion collisions generated by TrENTo. We demonstrate that the solver converges with only one iteration in most cases, and as a result, the implicit method requires a smaller computational cost than the explicit one at the same accuracy in these cases, while it may not converge with an unrealistically large $\Delta t$. By showing a relationship between the one-stage Gauss-Legendre method with the iterative solver and the two-step Adams-Bashforth method, we argue that our method benefits from both the stability of the former and the efficiency of the latter.

Euler Equations on Unstructured Grids

Abstract:We proposed an efficient and robust algorithm to solve the steady Euler equations on unstructured grids. The new algorithm is a Newton-iteration method in which every iteration step is a linear multigrid method using block lower-upper symmetric Gauss-Seidel (LU-SGS) iteration as its smoother. To regularize the Jacobian matrix of Newtoniteration, we adopted a local residual dependent regularization, as the replacement of the standard time-stepping relaxation technique based on the local CFL number. The proposed method can be extended to high order approximations and three spatial dimensions in a nature way. The solver was tested on a sequence of benchmark problems on both quasi-uniform and local adaptive meshes. Fruitful numerical results illustrated the efficiency and robustness of our algorithm.

Abstract:Choptuik's critical phenomena in general relativity is revisited in the affine-null metric formulation of Einstein's equations for a massless scalar field in spherical symmetry. Numerical solutions are obtained by evolution of initial data using pseudospectral methods. The underlying system consists of differential equations along the outgoing null rays which can be solved in sequential form. A new two-parameter family of initial data is presented for which these equations can be integrated analytically. Specific choices of the initial data parameters correspond to either an asymptotically flat null cone, a black hole event horizon or the singular interior of a black hole. Our main focus is on the interior features of a black hole, for which the affine-null system is especially well adapted. We present both analytic and numerical results describing the geometric properties of the apparent horizon and final singularity. Using a regridding technique for the affine parameter, numerical evolution of initially asymptotically flat supercritical data can be continued inside the event horizon and track the apparent horizon up to the formation of the final singularity. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.110.044061 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We present an all speed scheme for the Euler-Korteweg model. We study a semi-implicit time-discretisation which treats the terms, which are stiff for low Mach numbers, implicitly and thereby avoids a dependence of the timestep restriction on the Mach number. Based on this we present a fully discrete finite difference scheme. In particular, the scheme is asymptotic preserving, i.e., it converges to a stable discretisation of the incompressible limit of the Euler-Korteweg model when the Mach number tends to zero.

Abstract:In this paper we show how the non-relativistic transport equations for a simple fluid can be obtained using a 3+1 representation. A pseudo-galilean transformation is introduced in order to obtain the Euler conservation laws. The interpretation of such transformation as well as the implications and potential extensions of the formalism are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Based on Fick's second law and Cahn-Hilliard theory, a conservative phase-field model is developed to track interface. The phase-field variable changes in a hyperbolic tangent behavior across the diffuse interface over which the interface curvature can be easily calculated. Different from the frequently used lattice-Boltzmann-based discrete method, the phase-field equation is discretized using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. Accordingly, the present numerical scheme alleviates the programming burden, reduces the memory usage, but maintains a high numerical accuracy. To achieve large-scale interface tracking, a parallel and adaptive-mesh-refinement algorithm is developed to reduce the computing overhead. Various cases of the interface evolutions under steady flow fields indicate that the proposed numerical scheme can capture the interface with high accuracy. Furthermore, the robustness of the numerical scheme is validated by simulating the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, and good agreement with previous work is achieved.
The relativistic Euler equations with a physical vacuum boundary: Hadamard local well-posedness, rough solutions, and continuation criterion

Abstract:In this paper we provide a complete local well-posedness theory for the free boundary relativistic Euler equations with a physical vacuum boundary on a Minkowski background. Specifically, we establish the following results: (i) local well-posedness in the Hadamard sense, i.e., local existence, uniqueness, and continuous dependence on the data; (ii) low regularity solutions: our uniqueness result holds at the level of Lipschitz velocity and density, while our rough solutions, obtained as unique limits of smooth solutions, have regularity only a half derivative above scaling; (iii) stability: our uniqueness in fact follows from a more general result, namely, we show that a certain nonlinear functional that tracks the distance between two solutions (in part by measuring the distance between their respective boundaries) is propagated by the flow; (iv) we establish sharp, essentially scale invariant energy estimates for solutions; (v) a sharp continuation criterion, at the level of scaling, showing that solutions can be continued as long as the the velocity is in $L^1_t Lip$ and a suitable weighted version of the density is at the same regularity level. Our entire approach is in Eulerian coordinates and relies on the functional framework developed in the companion work of the second and third authors corresponding to the non relativistic problem. All our results are valid for a general equation of state $p(\varrho)= \varrho^\gamma$, $\gamma > 1$.

A Kinetic Scheme Based On Positivity Preservation For Multi-component Euler Equations

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a kinetic model based on flexible velocities for the multi-component Euler equations. Our kinetic model comprises of two velocities in 1D and three velocities in 2D. The velocities in 2D are aligned to the cell-interface such that the resulting macroscopic normal flux is locally one-dimensional. The magnitude of these velocities is set to satisfy positivity preservation conditions for first order accuracy, under a CFL-like limiting condition on the time step. However, at a stationary contact discontinuity, the definition of the velocities is modified to ensure an exact capture. The basic numerical scheme is extended to third order accuracy using a Chakravarthy-Osher type flux limited approach along with Strong Stability Preserving Runge-Kutta (SSPRK) method. Some benchmark 1D and 2D test cases are solved, including shock-bubble interaction test cases, to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed solver.
