Abstract:The simulation of CMS raw data requires the random selection of one hundred and fifty pileup events from a very large set of files, to be superimposed in memory to the signal event. The use of ROOT I/O for that purpose is quite unusual: the events are not read sequentially but pseudo-randomly, they are not processed one by one in memory but by bunches, and they do not contain orthodox ROOT objects but many foreign objects and templates. In this context, we have compared the performance of ROOT containers versus the STL vectors, and the use of trees versus a direct storage of containers. The strategy with best performances is by far the one using clones within trees, but it stays hard to tune and very dependant on the exact use-case. The use of STL vectors could bring more easily similar performances in a future ROOT release.

Abstract:Cellular automata are interacting classical bits that display diverse emergent behaviors, from fractals to random-number generators to Turing-complete computation. We discover that quantum cellular automata (QCA) can exhibit complexity in the sense of the complexity science that describes biology, sociology, and economics. QCA exhibit complexity when evolving under "Goldilocks rules" that we define by balancing activity and stasis. Our Goldilocks rules generate robust dynamical features (entangled breathers), network structure and dynamics consistent with complexity, and persistent entropy fluctuations. Present-day experimental platforms -- Rydberg arrays, trapped ions, and superconducting qubits -- can implement our Goldilocks protocols, making testable the link between complexity science and quantum computation exposed by our QCA.

Integrability of Goldilocks quantum cellular automata

Abstract:Goldilocks quantum cellular automata (QCA) have been simulated on quantum hardware and produce emergent small-world correlation networks. In Goldilocks QCA, a single-qubit unitary is applied to each qubit in a one-dimensional chain subject to a balance constraint: a qubit is updated if its neighbors are in opposite basis states. Here, we prove that a subclass of Goldilocks QCA -- including the one implemented experimentally -- map onto free fermions and therefore can be classically simulated efficiently. We support this claim with two independent proofs, one involving a Jordan--Wigner transformation and one mapping the integrable six-vertex model to QCA. We compute local conserved quantities of these QCA and predict experimentally measurable expectation values. These calculations can be applied to test large digital quantum computers against known solutions. In contrast, typical Goldilocks QCA have equilibration properties and quasienergy-level statistics that suggest nonintegrability. Still, the latter QCA conserve one quantity useful for error mitigation. Our work provides a parametric quantum circuit with tunable integrability properties with which to test quantum hardware.

Neural-network states for the classical simulation of quantum computing

Abstract:Simulating quantum algorithms with classical resources generally requires exponential resources. However, heuristic classical approaches are often very efficient in approximately simulating special circuit structures, for example with limited entanglement, or based on one-dimensional geometries. Here we introduce a classical approach to the simulation of general quantum circuits based on neural-network quantum states (NQS) representations. Considering a set of universal quantum gates, we derive rules for exactly applying single-qubit and two-qubit Z rotations to NQS, whereas we provide a learning scheme to approximate the action of Hadamard gates. Results are shown for the Hadamard and Fourier transform of entangled initial states for systems sizes and total circuit depths exceeding what can be currently simulated with state-of-the-art brute-force techniques. The overall accuracy obtained by the neural-network states based on Restricted Boltzmann machines is satisfactory, and offers a classical route to simulating highly-entangled circuits. In the test cases considered, we find that our classical simulations are comparable to quantum simulations affected by an incoherent noise level in the hardware of about $10^{-3}$ per gate.

Abstract:A design for a large-scale surface code quantum processor based on a node/network approach is introduced for semiconductor quantum dot spin qubits. The minimal node contains only 7 quantum dots, and nodes are separated on the micron scale, creating useful space for wiring interconnects and integration of conventional transistor circuits. Entanglement is distributed between neighbouring nodes by loading spin singlets locally and then shuttling one member of the pair through a linear array of empty dots. Each node contains one data qubit, two ancilla qubits, and additional dots to facilitate electron shuttling and measurement of the ancillas. A four-node GHZ state is realized by sharing three internode singlets followed by local gate operations and ancilla measurements. Further local operations and measurements produce an X or Z stabilizer on four data qubits, which is the fundamental operation of the surface code. Electron shuttling is simulated using a simplified gate electrode geometry without explicit barrier gates, and demonstrates that adiabatic transport is possible on timescales that do not present a speed bottleneck to the processor. An important shuttling error in a clean system is uncontrolled phase rotation due to the modulation of the electronic g-factor during transport, owing to the Stark effect. This error can be reduced by appropriate electrostatic tuning of the stationary electron's g-factor. Using reasonable noise models, we estimate error thresholds with respect to single and two-qubit gate fidelities as well as singlet dephasing errors during shuttling. A twirling protocol transforms the non-Pauli noise associated with exchange gate operations into Pauli noise, making it possible to use the Gottesman-Knill theorem to efficiently simulate large codes.

Abstract:Two of the major obstacles to achieve quantum computing (QC) are (i) scalability to many qubits and (ii) controlled connectivity between any selected qubits. Using Josephson charge qubits, here we propose an experimentally realizable method to efficiently solve these two central problems. Since any two charge qubits can be effectively coupled by an experimentally accessible inductance, the proposed QC architecture is scalable. In addition, we formulate an efficient and realizable QC scheme that requires only one (instead of two or more) two-bit operation to implement conditional gates.

Abstract:Elementary cellular automata (ECA) present iconic examples of complex systems. Though described only by one-dimensional strings of binary cells evolving according to nearest-neighbour update rules, certain ECA rules manifest complex dynamics capable of universal computation. Yet, the classification of precisely which rules exhibit complex behaviour remains a significant challenge. Here we approach this question using tools from quantum stochastic modelling, where quantum statistical memory -- the memory required to model a stochastic process using a class of quantum machines -- can be used to quantify the structure of a stochastic process. By viewing ECA rules as transformations of stochastic patterns, we ask: Does an ECA generate structure as quantified by the quantum statistical memory, and if so, how quickly? We illustrate how the growth of this measure over time correctly distinguishes simple ECA from complex counterparts. Moreover, it provides a more refined means for quantitatively identifying complex ECAs -- providing a spectrum on which we can rank the complexity of ECA by the rate in which they generate structure.

Abstract:Quantum simulation of many-body systems in materials science and chemistry are promising application areas for quantum computers. However, the limited scale and coherence of near-term quantum processors pose a significant obstacle to realizing this potential. Here, we theoretically outline how a single-circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) device, consisting of a transmon qubit coupled to a long-lived cavity mode, can be used to simulate the ground state of a highly-entangled quantum many-body spin chain. We exploit recently developed methods for implementing quantum operations to sequentially build up a matrix product state (MPS) representation of a many-body state. This approach re-uses the transmon qubit to read out the state of each spin in the chain and exploits the large state space of the cavity as a quantum memory encoding inter-site correlations and entanglement. We show, through simulation, that analog (pulse-level) control schemes can accurately prepare a known MPS representation of a quantum critical spin chain in significantly less time than digital (gate-based) methods, thereby reducing the exposure to decoherence. We then explore this analog-control approach for the variational preparation of an unknown ground state. We demonstrate that the large state space of the cavity can be used to replace multiple qubits in a qubit-only architecture, and could therefore simplify the design of quantum processors for materials simulation. We explore the practical limitations of realistic noise and decoherence and discuss avenues for scaling this approach to more complex problems that challenge classical computational methods.

Approaching the Chaotic Regime with a Fully Connected Superconducting Quantum Processor

Abstract:The task of sampling the output distribution of random quantum circuits will drive a multiqubit system into chaos, reaching the Porter-Thomas distribution where small multiqubit probabilities appear most often. Such a task is hard to be computed classically and has been proposed as an important measure for quantum supremacy. An equivalent route to reach chaos is the controlled dynamics uniformly exploring the large Hilbert space of coupled qubits, and a proof-of-concept experiment was recently demonstrated by Neill et al. [Science 360, 195 (2018)] in a chain of nine qubits featuring only neighboring couplings. Here, we show numerically that a faster convergence to chaos is possible when full connectivity, instead of partial connectivity, is present among the qubits, i.e., cycles or time required to reach chaotic regime increase only slightly with the number of qubits. We validate the numerical result by carrying out an experiment using up to 12 qubits in a fully connected superconducting quantum processor. Based on a machine learning model, we quantify the evolution error rate to be less than (0.5%/cycle)/qubit, which is mostly determined by qubit dephasing.

Abstract:Classifying many-body quantum states with distinct properties and phases of matter is one of the most fundamental tasks in quantum many-body physics. However, due to the exponential complexity that emerges from the enormous numbers of interacting particles, classifying large-scale quantum states has been extremely challenging for classical approaches. Here, we propose a new approach called quantum neuronal sensing. Utilizing a 61-qubit superconducting quantum processor, we show that our scheme can efficiently classify two different types of many-body phenomena: namely the ergodic and localized phases of matter. Our quantum neuronal sensing process allows us to extract the necessary information coming from the statistical characteristics of the eigenspectrum to distinguish these phases of matter by measuring only one qubit and offers better phase resolution than conventional methods, such as measuring the imbalance. Our work demonstrates the feasibility and scalability of quantum neuronal sensing for near-term quantum processors and opens new avenues for exploring quantum many-body phenomena in larger-scale systems.

Abstract:Quantum-dot fabrication and characterization is a well-established technology, which is used in photonics, quantum optics and nanoelectronics. Four quantum-dots placed at the corners of a square form a unit cell, which can hold a bit of information and serve as a basis for Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA) nanoelectronic circuits. Although several basic QCA circuits have been designed, fabricated and tested, proving that quantum-dots can form functional, fast and low-power nanoelectornic circuits, QCA nanoelectronics still remain at its infancy. One of the reasons for this is the lack of design automation tools, which will facilitate the systematic design of large QCA circuits that contemporary applications demand. Here we present novel, programmable QCA circuits, which are based on crossbar architecture. These circuits can be programmed to implement any Boolean function in analogy to CMOS FPGAs and open the road that will lead to full design automation of QCA nanoelectronic circuits. Using this architecture we designed and simulated QCA circuits that proved to be area efficient, stable and reliable.

Observation of higher-order topological states on a quantum computer

Abstract:Programmable quantum simulators such as superconducting quantum processors and ultracold atomic lattices represent rapidly developing emergent technology that may one day qualitatively outperform existing classical computers. Yet, apart from a few breakthroughs, the range of viable computational applications with current-day noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices is still significantly limited by gate errors, quantum decoherence, and the number of high-quality qubits. In this work, we develop an approach that places NISQ hardware as a particularly suitable platform for simulating multi-dimensional condensed matter systems, including lattices beyond three dimensions which are difficult to realize or probe in other settings. By fully exploiting the exponentially large Hilbert space of a quantum chain, we encoded a high-dimensional model in terms of non-local many-body interactions that can further be systematically transcribed into quantum gates. We demonstrate the power of our approach by realizing, on IBM transmon-based quantum computers, higher-order topological states in up to four dimensions, which are exotic phases that have never been realized in any quantum setting. With the aid of in-house circuit compression and error mitigation techniques, we measured the topological state dynamics and their protected mid-gap spectra to a high degree of accuracy, as benchmarked by reference exact diagonalization data. The time and memory needed with our approach scale favorably with system size and dimensionality compared to exact diagonalization on classical computers.

Abstract:In quantum computing, the connectivity of qubits placed on two-dimensional chips limits the scalability and functionality of solid-state quantum computers. This paper presents two approaches to constructing complex quantum networks from simple qubit arrays, specifically grid lattices. The first approach utilizes a subset of qubits as tunable couplers, effectively yielding a range of non-trivial graph-based Hamiltonians. The second approach employs dynamic graph engineering by periodically activating and deactivating couplers, enabling the creation of effective quantum walks with longer-range couplings. Numerical simulations verify the effective dynamics of these approaches. In terms of these two approaches, we explore implementing various graphs, including cubes and fullerenes, etc, on two-dimensional lattices. These techniques facilitate the realization of analog quantum simulation, particularly continuous-time quantum walks discussed in detail in this manuscript, for different computational tasks on superconducting quantum chips despite their inherent low dimensional simple architecture.

High Dimensional Quantum Machine Learning With Small Quantum Computers

Abstract:Quantum computers hold great promise to enhance machine learning, but their current qubit counts restrict the realisation of this promise. In an attempt to placate this limitation techniques can be applied for evaluating a quantum circuit using a machine with fewer qubits than the circuit naively requires. These techniques work by evaluating many smaller circuits on the smaller machine, that are then combined in a polynomial to replicate the output of the larger machine. This scheme requires more circuit evaluations than are practical for general circuits. However, we investigate the possibility that for certain applications many of these subcircuits are superfluous, and that a much smaller sum is sufficient to estimate the full circuit. We construct a machine learning model that may be capable of approximating the outputs of the larger circuit with much fewer circuit evaluations. We successfully apply our model to the task of digit recognition, using simulated quantum computers much smaller than the data dimension. The model is also applied to the task of approximating a random 10 qubit PQC with simulated access to a 5 qubit computer, even with only relatively modest number of circuits our model provides an accurate approximation of the 10 qubit PQCs output, superior to a neural network attempt. The developed method might be useful for implementing quantum models on larger data throughout the NISQ era.

Abstract:Quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) is an emerging transistor-less field-coupled nanocomputing (FCN) approach to ultra-scale 'nanochip' integration. In QCA, to represent digital circuitry, electrostatic repulsion between electrons and the mechanism of electron tunnelling in quantum dots are used. QCA technology can surpass conventional complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology in terms of clock speed, reduced occupied chip area, and energy efficiency. To develop QCA circuits, irreversible majority gates are typically used as the primary components. Recently, some studies have introduced reversible design techniques, using reversible majority gates as the main building block, to develop ultra-energy-efficient QCA circuits. However, this approach resulted in time delays, an increase in the number of QCA cells used, and an increase in the chip area occupied. This work introduces a novel hybrid design strategy employing irreversible, reversible, and partially reversible QCA gates to establish an optimal balance between power consumption, delay time, and occupied area. This hybrid technique allows the designer to have more control over the circuit characteristics to meet different system needs. A combination of reversible, irreversible, and innovative partially reversible majority gates is used in the proposed hybrid design method. We evaluated the hybrid design method by examining the half-adder circuit as a case study. We developed four hybrid QCA half-adder circuits, each of which simultaneously incorporates various types of majority gates. The QCADesigner-E 2.2 simulation tool was used to simulate the performance and energy efficiency of the half-adders. This tool provides numerical results for the circuit input/output response and heat dissipation at the physical level within a microscopic quantum mechanical model.

Abstract:Simulating quantum walkers Quantum walks are the quantum mechanical analogs of classical random walks, describing the propagation of a quantum walker across a lattice, and find application in developing algorithms for simulating quantum many-body systems. Gong et al. used an 8-by-8 two-dimensional (2D) superconducting qubit square lattice containing 62 functional qubits to show how multiple (two) walkers traverse a 2D qubit array, interfering as they go. The authors were also able to program the paths that the walkers follow, demonstrating a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in which a single or multiple quantum walkers coherently traverse two paths before interfering and exiting at a single port. Abstract:Computer simulation of observable phenomena is an indispensable tool for engineering new technology, understanding the natural world, and studying human society. However, the most interesting systems are often so complex that simulating their future behavior demands storing immense amounts of information regarding how they have behaved in the past. For increasingly complex systems, simulation becomes increasingly difficult and is ultimately constrained by resources such as computer memory. Recent theoretical work shows that quantum theory can reduce this memory requirement beyond ultimate classical limits, as measured by a process' statistical complexity, C. We experimentally demonstrate this quantum advantage in simulating stochastic processes. Our quantum implementation observes a memory requirement of Cq = 0.05 ± 0.01, far below the ultimate classical limit of C = 1. Scaling up this technique would substantially reduce the memory required in simulations of more complex systems.
Efficient Quantum Circuit Design with a Standard Cell Approach, with an Application to Neutral Atom Quantum Computers

Abstract:We design quantum circuits by using the standard cell approach borrowed from classical circuit design, which can speed-up the layout of circuits with a regular structure. Our standard cells are general and can be used for all types of quantum circuits: error-corrected or not. The standard cell approach enables the formulation of layout-aware routing algorithms. Our method is directly applicable to neutral atom quantum computers supporting qubit shuttling. Such computers enable zoned architectures for memory, processing and measurement, and we design circuits using qubit storages (memory and measurement zones) and standard cells (processing zones). Herein, we use cubic standard cells for Toffoli gates and, starting from a 3D architecture, we design a multiplication circuit. We present evidence that, when compared with automatic routing methods, our layout-aware routers are significantly faster and achieve shallower 3D circuits (by at least 2.5x) and with a lower routing cost. Additionally, our co-design approach can be used to estimate the resources necessary for a quantum computation without using complex compilation methods. We conclude that standard cells, with the support of layout-aware routing, pave the way to very large scale methods for quantum circuit compilation.

Abstract:An efficient simulator for quantum systems is one of the original goals for the efforts to develop a quantum computer. In recent years, synthetic dimensions in photonics have emerged as a potentially powerful approach for simulation that is free from the constraint of geometric dimensionality. Here we demonstrate a quantum-correlated synthetic crystal that is based on a coherently controlled broadband quantum frequency comb produced in a chip-scale, dynamically modulated lithium niobate microresonator. The time–frequency entanglement inherent with the comb modes greatly extends the dimensionality of the synthetic space, creating a massive, nearly 400 × 400 synthetic lattice with electrically controlled tunability. With such a system, we are able to utilize the evolution of quantum correlations between entangled photons to perform a series of simulations, demonstrating quantum random walks, Bloch oscillations and multilevel Rabi oscillations in the time and frequency correlation space (demonstrated in a 5 × 5 mode subspace). The device combines the simplicity of monolithic nanophotonic architecture, high dimensionality of a quantum-correlated synthetic space and on-chip coherent control, which opens up an avenue towards chip-scale implementation of large-scale analogue quantum simulation and computation in the time–frequency domain.

Abstract:A quadrillion dimensional Hilbert space hosted by a quantum processor with over 50 physical qubits has been expected to be powerful enough to perform computational tasks ranging from simulations of many-body physics to complex financial modeling. Despite few examples and demonstrations, it is still not clear how we can utilize such a large Hilbert space as a computational resource; in particular, how a simple and small quantum system could solve non-trivial computational tasks. In this paper, we show a simple Ising model capable of performing such non-trivial computational tasks in a quantum neural network model. An Ising spin chain as small as ten qubits can solve a practical image classification task with high accuracy. To evaluate the mechanism of its computation, we examine how the symmetries of the Hamiltonian would affect its computational power. We show how the interplay between complexity and integrability/symmetries of the quantum system dictates the performance as quantum neural network.
