Providing part-time jobs for older patients hospitalized in rural areas.

Abstract:#{149}Fourstate hospitals in Indiana, five in New Jersey, nd one in Virginia are using a federal older-worker employment program to provide part-time jobs, both inside and outside the hospital, for olden, often chronic mental patients. The patients are hired by Green Thumb, Inc. , one of eight national contractors openating a Title 5 community service employment program for the elderly under the Older Americans Act. Green Thumb, which is sponsored by the National Farmers Union, hires low-income senior citizens mainly in rural areas. The program is funded primarily by the Department of Labor. Since its origin in 1966 with 280 older workers in four states, the over-all program has grown to the point that it employs 16,000 persons in 47 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. The workers do community service tasks such as weatherizing and rehabilitating homes for low-income residents, operating senior citizen centers and nutrition sites, working as teachers’ aides and police dispatchers, and maintaining and repairing municipal buildings. An estimated 58 patients are employed in Green Thumb programs in the ten state hospitals. They work in cafeterias and kitchens, on grounds maintenance crews, in laundries, and in medical records departments, among other areas. In some cases patients are placed in work crews with Green Thumb workers from the community. Green Thumb also hires people from the community to work at hospitals and community mental health centers. These workers provide transportation and serve as librarians and arts and crafts instructors. Green Thumb workers are paid the federal or state minimum wage rate, whichever is higher. For special cases, as for a worker promoted to a safety monitor or crew foreman, the worker is paid a slightly higher rate of pay because of the higher level of responsibility.
