Abstract:Background: The rapid and accurate assessment of neonatal asphyxia is critical to preventing potentially fatal outcomes. Therefore, nursing students must acquire the skills to assess newborn conditions immediately after birth and implement appropriate interventions. Virtual reality (VR) simulation education has emerged as a promising tool for nursing education, offering repetitive and customizable clinical training while ensuring patient safety and overcoming spatiotemporal limitations. Aim: This study investigated the effects of a contactless hand-tracking-based immersive VR neonatal Apgar scoring program, adapted from experiential learning theory. Design: A non-randomized controlled trial with a pre-post-test, quasi-experimental design was conducted. Settings: The study was conducted at two nursing schools from July to October 2023. Participants: Participants comprised nursing students holding bachelor's degrees in nursing, with three or four years of experience and successful completion of a neonatal nursing theory course. Additionally, individuals with at least six months of experience working in a neonatal ward or delivery room before enrolling in nursing school were eligible. Methods: The participants were divided into three groups: the VR group (n = 27) received contactless hand-tracking-based immersive VR neonatal Apgar scoring training; the simulation group (n = 28) received face-to-face Apgar scoring simulation training; and the control group (n = 26) received instruction on the Apgar scoring criteria. Changes in scores among the VR, simulation, and control groups were statistically compared using ANOVA with SPSS-WIN 27.0. Results: The VR group exhibited significant improvements in knowledge, learning satisfaction, self-confidence, immersion, and motivation compared to the simulation and control groups. Moreover, satisfaction was significantly higher in the VR group than in the simulation group. Conclusions: The hand-tracking-based immersive VR neonatal Apgar scoring program represents an innovative and effective educational tool, prioritizing the privacy and rights of mothers and infants. It can potentially replace traditional delivery-room clinical training, which is observation-based and limited.
The Effects of a Digital Game Simulator versus a Traditional Intervention on Paramedics’ Neonatal Resuscitation Performance

Abstract:Neonatal resuscitation is a skill set that comprises procedures, assessment, decision-making, communication, and teamwork. It is used in an emergency situation in the delivery room with the aim of supporting newborn infants who are not able to begin breathing on their own. Thus, healthcare providers need to refresh their neonatal resuscitation skills periodically, according to the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, to ensure that they can react quickly and effectively in emergency situations. The RETAIN digital game simulator was designed to enable healthcare providers to practice their neonatal resuscitation skills. To evaluate the effectiveness of this game in a laboratory setting, a randomized control trial sampled 42 paramedics who completed a pre-test, were randomly assigned to watch a traditional lecture video on the neonatal resuscitation procedure or to play a novel digital game simulation on the same topic, and then completed a following test. A two-way mixed ANOVA revealed a statistically significant improvement in paramedics’ neonatal resuscitation performance over time, which did not differ between conditions. Thus, digital games can provide an enjoyable alternative to traditional practices in refreshing neonatal resuscitation knowledge.

A Randomized Controlled Simulation Trial of a Neonatal Resuscitation Digital Game Simulator for Labour and Delivery Room Staff

Abstract:Background: Healthcare providers (HCPs) working in labour and delivery rooms need to undergo regular refresher courses to maintain their neonatal resuscitation skills, which are shown to decline over time. However, due to their irregular schedules and limited time, HCPs encounter difficulties in readily accessing refresher programs. RETAIN is a digital game that simulates a delivery room to facilitate neonatal resuscitation training for HCPs. Objective: This study aims to ascertain whether participants enjoyed the RETAIN digital game simulator and whether it was at least as good as a video lecture at refreshing and maintaining participants' neonatal resuscitation knowledge. Methods: In this randomized controlled simulation trial, n = 42 labour and delivery room HCPs were administered a pre-test of neonatal resuscitation knowledge using a manikin. Then, they were randomly assigned to a control or a treatment group. For 20-30 min, participants in the control group watched a neonatal resuscitation lecture video, while those in the treatment group played the RETAIN digital game simulator of neonatal resuscitation scenarios. Then, all participants were administered a post-test identical to the pre-test. Additionally, participants in the treatment group completed a survey of attitudes toward the RETAIN simulator that provided a measure of enjoyment of the RETAIN game simulator. After two months, participants were administered another post-test identical to the pre-test. Results: For the primary outcome (neonatal resuscitation performance), an analysis of variance revealed that participants significantly improved their neonatal resuscitation performance over the first two time points, with a significant decline to the third time point, the same pattern of results across conditions, and no differences between conditions. For the secondary outcome (attitudes toward RETAIN), participants in the treatment condition also reported favourable attitudes toward RETAIN. Conclusions: Labour and delivery room healthcare providers in both groups (RETAIN simulator or video lecture) significantly improved their neonatal resuscitation performance immediately following the intervention, with no group differences. The findings suggest that participants enjoyed interacting with the RETAIN digital game simulator, which provided a similar boost in performance right after use to the more traditional intervention.
Effects of gamification in advanced life support training for clinical nurses: A cluster randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Background: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation training is a mandatory competency, especially for healthcare professionals. However, the spread of COVID-19 caused a sharp decline in the number of participants on advanced life support training, thereby accelerating the diversification of educational methods. Gamification is an increasingly popular method of diversifying instruction, but its effectiveness remains controversial. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of gamification learning in advanced life support training. Design: A cluster randomized controlled trial. Setting: A single advanced life support training center. Participants: Clinical nurses who are currently practicing in a hospital. Methods: A part of the existing advanced life support course was gamified using Kahoot! platform. Conventional learning and gamified learning were each conducted 11 times, and the level of knowledge after training was assessed. The assessment questions were categorized into advanced life support algorithms, teamwork, and cardiac arrest rhythms. Results: A total of 267 were enrolled in the study, and 148 and 139 learners were assigned to CL and GL, respectively. There was no difference in post-training knowledge related to teamwork, and cardiac arrest rhythms between the conventional learning and gamified learning groups, but knowledge related to the advanced life support algorithm was low in the gamified learning group. Conclusions: Even if the learners are the same, advanced life support gamification training can lead to negative outcomes depending on the simplicity or goal of the training content. To improve the effectiveness of the training, various methods of gamification training should be applied depending on the goal and content of the training.
360-degree virtual reality video to teach neonatal resuscitation: an exploratory development study

Abstract:Simulation is an effective training method for neonatal resuscitation (NR). However, the limitations brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, and other resource constraints, have necessitated exploring alternatives. Virtual reality (VR), particularly 360-degree VR videos, have gained attraction in medical training due to their immersive qualities. The primary objectives of the study were to produce a high quality 360-degree virtual reality (VR) video capturing NR simulation and to determine if it could be an acceptable adjunct to teach NR. The secondary objective was to determine which aspects of NR could benefit from the incorporation of such a video in training. This was an exploratory development study. The first part consisted of producing the video using a GoPro action camera, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Unity Editor. In the second part participants were recruited, based on level of experience, to watch the video and answer questionnaires to determine acceptability (user experience and cognitive load) and aspects of NR which could benefit from the video. The video was successfully developed. Forty-six participants showed a strong general appreciation. User experience revealed high means (> 6) in the positive subscales and low means (< 4) for immersion side effect, with no difference between groups. Cognitive load was higher than anticipated. Participants indicated that this video could be effective for teaching crisis resource management principles, human and environment interactions, and procedural skills. The 360-degree VR video could be a potential new simulation adjunct for NR. Future studies are needed to evaluate learning outcomes of such videos.

Abstract:Background: It is essential that nurses quickly learn the proper methods for preventing and controlling nosocomial infection and managing intensive care patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the donning and doffing of personal protective equipment (PPE). Virtual reality (VR) simulation offers the advantage of learning in a safe environment with a sense of realism similar to that of an actual clinical setting and has been reported to enhance self-efficacy in infection control, safety performance, and learning satisfaction among students. Objective: This study aims to develop a virtual reality infection control simulation (VRICS) program regarding donning and doffing of PPE and respiratory care for pediatric patients admitted to an isolation unit for COVID-19 and to identify the effects of the program on PPE knowledge, infection control performance, and self-efficacy for nursing students. Additionally, the realism of the VRICS program and the students' level of satisfaction with the program were assessed. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study based on a controlled pretest-posttest design. Third- and fourth-year nursing students were divided into an experimental group (n=25) who participated in a VRICS program and a control group (n=25) with no participation. Data were collected from November 13 to December 10, 2021, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and the t test, paired t test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Wilcoxon matched-pair signed-rank test. The VRICS program consisted of a prebriefing, including direct practice of donning and doffing PPE, VR simulation, and debriefing. The VR simulation comprised 3 sessions: donning and inspection of PPE in the dressing room before entering the negative-pressure isolation unit; assessing for suction care, nasopharyngeal suctioning, and checking of COVID-19 patients in the negative-pressure isolation unit; and doffing PPE in the dressing room. The total execution time for the program was 180 min. Results: Compared with the control group, the experimental group showed significantly greater improvements in PPE knowledge ( z =–3.28, P <.001), infection control performance ( t 48 =4.89, P <.001), and self-efficacy ( t 36.2 =4.93, P <.001). The experimental group's mean scores for realistic immersion and learner satisfaction were 4.49 (SD 0.50) points and 4.75 (SD 0.38) points (on a 5-point Likert scale), respectively. Conclusions: The VR simulation training program involving pediatric COVID-19 patients combined skills training effectively and enhanced theoretical knowledge, respiratory care skills, and infectious disease preparedness. Thus, it could be applied to training nurses to respond more effectively to public health situations involving infectious diseases, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

VR-NRP: A Virtual Reality Simulation for Training in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program

Abstract:The use of Virtual Reality (VR) technologies has been extensively researched in surgical and anatomical education. VR provides a lifelike and interactive environment where healthcare providers can practice and refresh their skills in a safe environment. VR has been shown to be as effective as traditional medical education teaching methods, with the potential to provide more cost-effective and convenient means of curriculum delivery, especially in rural and remote areas or in environments with limited access to hands-on training. In this sense, VR offers the potential to be used to support resuscitation training for healthcare providers such as the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). The NRP program is an evidence-based and standardized approach for training healthcare providers on the resuscitation of the newborn. In this article, we describe a VR simulation environment that was designed and developed to refresh the skills of NRP providers. To validate this platform, we compared the VR-NRP simulation with exposure to 360-degree immersive video. We found that both VR technologies were positively viewed by healthcare professionals and performed very similarly to each other. However, the VR simulation provided a significantly increased feeling of presence. Furthermore, participants found the VR simulation more useful, leading to improved experiential learning outcomes. Also, participants using VR simulation reported higher confidence in certain NRP skills, such as proper mask placement and newborn response evaluation. This research represents a step forward in understanding how VR and related extended reality (XR) technologies can be applied for effective, immersive medical education, with potential benefits for remote and rural healthcare providers.

Effectiveness of a virtual reality triage simulation program for nursing students: A mixed-methods study

Abstract:Aims: To examine the effectiveness of a virtual reality simulation (VRS) triage in improving students' learning motivation, attitudes, satisfaction and learning experiences in an emergency nursing course. Background: VR facilitates the realization of clinical scenarios that are significant for teaching emergency nursing. Triage presents a unique challenge in emergency nursing courses, where practical learning opportunities are seldom available. Design: The study employed a convergent parallel mixed-methods design. Methods: A total of 164 third-year nursing students were recruited from an emergency nursing course. The experimental group of 73 students participated in a VRS triage program and the control group of 91 students received a traditional program based on written case studies. The learning outcomes were evaluated using the Attention, Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction motivational learning inventory together with questionnaires on learning attitudes and satisfaction. Qualitative data were collected through phenomenographic interviews. Results: The learning outcomes from the experimental group showed significant improvement in motivational learning inventory scores, with the greatest increase in satisfaction, followed by confidence, attention and relevance. Qualitative interviews with 30 students revealed four main themes in their learning experiences: "reflecting a real-world clinical environment," "enabling the internalization of knowledge," "enhancing clinical skills proficiency," and "cultivating a positive attitude toward patient care." The core theme was the establishment of professional core competency. Conclusions: VRS learning shows positive outcomes in enriching students' learning experiences. This study contributes to the literature on the use of VR technology in nursing education by offering insights into the effectiveness of VRS learning.
Multidisciplinary Design–Based Multimodal Virtual Reality Simulation in Nursing Education: Mixed Methods Study

Abstract:Background: The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the necessity for innovative educational methods in nursing. Our study takes a unique approach using a multidisciplinary simulation design, which offers a systematic and comprehensive strategy for developing virtual reality (VR) simulations in nursing education. Objective: The aim of this study is to develop VR simulation content for a pediatric nursing module based on a multidisciplinary simulation design and to evaluate its feasibility for nursing education. Methods: This study used a 1-group, posttest-only design. VR content for pediatric nursing practice was developed by integrating the technological characteristics of a multimodal VR system with the learning elements of traditional nursing simulation, combining various disciplines, including education, engineering, and nursing. A user test was conducted with 12 nursing graduates (preservice nurses) followed by post hoc surveys (assessing presence, VR systems, VR sickness, and simulation satisfaction) and in-depth, one-on-one interviews. Results: User tests showed mean scores of 4.01 (SD 1.43) for presence, 4.91 (SD 0.81) for the VR system, 0.64 (SD 0.35) for VR sickness, and 5.00 (SD 1.00) for simulation satisfaction. In-depth interviews revealed that the main strengths of the immersive VR simulation for pediatric pneumonia nursing were effective visualization and direct experience through hands-on manipulation; the drawback was keyword-based voice interaction. To improve VR simulation quality, participants suggested increasing the number of nursing techniques and refining them in more detail. Conclusions: This VR simulation content for a pediatric nursing practice using a multidisciplinary educational design model was confirmed to have positive educational potential. Further research is needed to confirm the specific learning effects of immersive nursing content based on multidisciplinary design models.
A mixed-methods feasibility study to assess the acceptability and applicability of immersive virtual reality sepsis game as an adjunct to nursing education

Abstract:Background: Virtual Reality (VR) simulation has been a topic of interest in recent years as an innovative strategy for healthcare education. Although there are a handful of studies evaluating VR simulation on knowledge, motivation, and satisfaction; there is a paucity of evidence to evaluate the effectiveness, acceptability and usability of 'Immersive' VR (IVR) simulation in nursing students. Objectives: A two-stage sequential mixed-methods feasibility study underpinned by gaming theory investigated; (1) the impact of IVR sepsis game on pre-registration nurses' self-efficacy and, (2) their perceptions of the acceptability and applicability of IVR sepsis game as an adjunct to nursing simulation education. Methods: The IVR simulation intervention was designed in collaboration with serious game specialists. Stage one collated pre and post-intervention self-efficacy scores with 19 pre-registration nurses using the validated instrument, Nursing Anxiety and Self-Confidence with Clinical Decision Making (NASC-CDM©) scale. Stage two used a descriptive qualitative approach to explore student nurses' perceptions of the game. Results: In stage one, pre and post-test scores revealed significant increase in self-confidence (26.1%, P < 0.001) and a significant decrease in anxiety (23.4%, P < 0.001). Stage two qualitative responses revealed four over-arching themes: acceptability, applicability, areas of improvement of IVR sepsis game and limitations of IVR game. Conclusion: IVR simulation show promise as an adjunct for nurse simulation and it appears to increase self-efficacy in pre-registration nursing students. Further testing with a sufficiently powered sample size will ratify findings and provide effective solutions to distance and online learning.

Positioning virtual reality as means of clinical experience in mental health nursing education: A quasi-experimental study

Abstract:Purpose Virtual reality technology has been used to establish a risk-free environment in which students can practice psychiatric nursing. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to examine the effects of a virtual reality (VR) based mental health nursing simulation on practice performance of undergraduate nursing students. Methods A quasi-experimental, pre- and post-test design was used. A total of 68 students were randomly assigned to an experimental group ( n = 32) and a control group ( n = 36). The control group received conventional simulation using text scenario-based role play. The intervention group received VR software consisting of 360° video clips and related quiz questions. Results The self-reported perceived competency in nursing performance showed no statistically significant improvement in the experimental group, whereas the control group showed a statistically significant improvement in symptom management ( t = 2.84, p = 0.007) and nurse-patient interaction ( t = 2.10, p = 0.043). Scores from the assessor showed better performance scores in the experimental group in symptom management ( t = −2.62, p = 0.011), violence risk management ( t = −3.42, p = 0.001), and nurse-patient interaction ( t = −3.12, p = 0.003). Conclusions The findings of this study indicate the potential of using VR for optimized mental health nursing simulation. VR technology allowed realistic experiences which may ensure students have a more comprehensive understanding of mentally ill patients and in doing so, overcome barriers of traditional simulation, resulting in better learning outcomes.

Abstract:Background: In the wake of challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic to conventional medical education, the demand for innovative teaching methods has surged. Nurse training, with its focus on hands-on practice and self-directed learning, encountered significant hurdles with conventional approaches. Augmented reality (AR) offers a potential solution to addressing this issue. Objective: The aim of this study was to develop, introduce, and evaluate an AR-based educational program designed for nurses, focusing on its potential to facilitate hands-on practice and self-directed learning. Methods: An AR-based educational program for nursing was developed anchored by the Kern six-step framework. First, we identified challenges in conventional teaching methods through interviews and literature reviews. Interviews highlighted the need for hands-on practice and on-site self-directed learning with feedback from a remote site. The training goals of the platform were established by expert trainers and researchers, focusing on the utilization of a ventilator and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation system. Intensive care nurses were enrolled to evaluate AR education. We then assessed usability and acceptability of the AR training using the System Usability Scale and Technology Acceptance Model with intensive care nurses who agreed to test the new platform. Additionally, selected participants provided deeper insights through semistructured interviews. Results: This study highlights feasibility and key considerations for implementing an AR-based educational program for intensive care unit nurses, focusing on training objectives of the platform. Implemented over 2 months using Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides and HoloLens 2, 28 participants were trained. Feedback gathered through interviews with the trainers and trainees indicated a positive reception. In particular, the trainees mentioned finding AR particularly useful for hands-on learning, appreciating its realism and the ability for repetitive practice. However, some challenges such as difficulty in adapting to the new technology were expressed. Overall, AR exhibits potential as a supplementary tool in nurse education. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first study to substitute conventional methods with AR in this specific area of critical care nursing. These results indicate the multiple principal factors to take into consideration when adopting AR education in hospitals. AR is effective in promoting self-directed learning and hands-on practice, with participants displaying active engagement and enhanced skill acquisition. Abstract:Nursing schools struggle to increase enrollments due to insufficient faculty and limitations in clinical site placements. New strategies must be employed to optimize learning, engage learners, and provide methods to ensure competency in future nursing graduates. A convenience sample of junior-level prelicensure nursing students (n = 48) were assigned to the immersive virtual reality (VR) group (n = 24) or the hospital-based group (n = 24). This mixed-methods quasi-experimental pilot study examined the effectiveness of an immersive VR simulation training program to replace pediatric clinical practice. The intervention group participated in immersive VR. The control group received the usual inpatient clinical training. Both groups then completed a traditional in-person simulation to compare performance outcomes. Performance scores for the immersive VR training group were significantly higher for total performance compared to the hospital-based training group. These preliminary results offer promise and demonstrate the potential of VR in the future of nursing education.

Abstract:Background: The adoption of immersive technology in simulation-based nursing education has grown significantly, offering a solution to resource limitations and enabling safe access to clinical environments. Despite its advantages, there are still diverse reports regarding the effectiveness of immersive technology. It is crucial to verify the effectiveness of immersive technology in nursing education to inform future educational programs. Objective: This systematic review aimed to identify the contents of immersive technology–based education for undergraduate nursing students and evaluate the effectiveness of immersive technology compared to traditional teaching methods. Methods: A literature search was performed using 4 databases: PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Web of Science; the latest search was completed on January 19, 2023. The inclusion criteria were as follows: participants were undergraduate nursing students; studies were published in Korean or English; designs included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or nonrandomized studies; and interventions involved virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality, or extended reality. Quality assessment was conducted using Cochrane Risk-of-Bias Tool version 2 for RCTs and the Risk-of-Bias Assessment Tool for Nonrandomized Studies. The main outcomes of the included studies were classified according to the New World Kirkpatrick Model (NWKM), ranging from level 1 (reaction) to level 4 (results). Meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.4 software, and subgroup analysis was conducted due to heterogeneity of the results of the meta-analysis. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach was adopted for assessing certainty and synthesizing results of the relevant literature. Results: A total of 23 studies were included, with participant numbers ranging from 33 to 289. Of these, 19 (82.6%) studies adopted VR to simulate various nursing scenarios, including disaster training, resuscitation, health assessments, and home health care; 4 (17.4%) studies used AR technologies; and 15 (65.2%) studies involved virtual patients in their scenarios. Based on the NWKM, the main outcome variables were classified as level 1 (usability and satisfaction), level 2 (knowledge, motivation, confidence, performance, attitude, and self-efficacy), and level 3 (clinical reasoning); level 4 outcomes were not found in the selected studies. Results of the subgroup analysis showed that immersive technology–based nursing education is more effective than traditional education in knowledge attainment (standard mean difference [SMD]=0.59, 95% CI 0.28-0.90, P <.001, I 2 =49%). Additionally, there were significant difference differences between the experimental and control group in confidence (SMD=0.70, 95% CI 0.05-1.35, P =.03, I 2 =82%) and self-efficacy (SMD=0.86, 95% CI 0.42-1.30, P <.001, I 2 =63%). Conclusions: These findings support the effectiveness of immersive technology–based education for undergraduate nursing students, despite heterogeneity in methods and interventions. We suggest that long-term cohort studies be conducted to evaluate the effects of immersive technology–based nursing education on NWKM level 4.

Abstract:Core nursing skills are emphasized in nursing education, given their vital role in nurses' competence; however, invasive nursing procedures like catheterization and enemas are infrequently performed in actual clinical practice, primarily being observed rather than executed. Virtual reality simulation training involves performing core nursing skills on virtual patients in a three-dimensional virtual reality environment, following the correct procedures. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of VR simulation on nursing students' confidence, proficiency, task engagement, and satisfaction. The study participants included 76 second-year nursing students, with 37 in the VR group and 39 in the control group. The VR group engaged in immersive VR (IVR) training sessions including enemas, nasogastric feeding, and nelaton catheterization. Conversely, the control group practiced these skills using mannequins. Assessments evaluated confidence, proficiency, learning satisfaction, and task engagement before and after the intervention. The average age of the study participants was 21.07 years, with 78.95% being female and 21.05% being male. The study findings revealed no significant differences between the VR and control groups regarding confidence (F = 3.878, p = 0.053), task engagement (F = 0.164, p = 0.687), and learning satisfaction (F = 0.668, p = 0.416). However, the VR group demonstrated significantly higher proficiency in the overall assessment of nasogastric feeding (F = 5.389, p = 0.023) and core components of nelaton catheterization (F = 4.046, p = 0.048). The IVR program emerged as an effective and valuable teaching tool, particularly well-suited for second-year nursing students, significantly enhancing proficiency.

Effectiveness of a virtual reality application‐based education programme on patient safety management for nursing students: A pre‐test–post‐test study

Abstract:Abstract Aims We aimed to develop a virtual reality‐based smartphone application that improves patient safety competency among nursing students in terms of knowledge, attitudes and confidence in patient safety management. We also sought to evaluate the effects and utility of the application in improving patient safety competency. Design A parallel, randomized controlled pre‐ and post‐test trial was conducted to test the effects of knowledge, attitudes and performance confidence in patient safety management. Methods Participants were randomly allocated to the experimental ( n = 22), in which nursing students received a two‐week mobile web‐based training programme covering key topics in patient safety management or the control group ( n = 22), in which nursing students received a training booklet. Participants completed a pre‐test and two post‐test questionnaires to assess the program's impact. The evaluation tools were patient safety management knowledge, attitude and patient safety management performance confidence scale. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, homogeneity test for pre‐test, unpaired t ‐test and repeated measures ANOVA. Results Patient safety competency in the experimental group improved significantly in terms of knowledge (from 11.68 to 18.55, p < 0.000), attitude (from 3.38 to 4.01; p < 0.005) and performance confidence (from 3.93 to 4.52; p < 0.000) compared with the control group. Our findings suggest that mobile app‐based education using virtual reality may be effective in enhancing patient safety management in nursing education.

Abstract:Problem: Emergency obstetric management is essential in midwifery training to prevent fetal and maternal morbidity. Repeating this management in practice is often not possible. Sustainable confidence in these procedures is usually achieved in the first few years of practice. Background: Simulation training complements hands-on learning and improves practical skills, benefiting both students and patients. Research on obstetric emergency simulation training have demonstrated this, but the use of digital simulation approaches, such as augmented reality (AR), is under-researched. Aim: To investigate whether AR simulation training influences midwifery students' subjective perceptions of knowledge, confidence and practical skills in emergency situations. Methods: A descriptive exploratory study was conducted using a pre-post design. AR scenarios were developed on the topics of 'preparing emergency tocolysis', 'preparing a pregnant woman for caesarean section' and 'resuscitation of newborns'. The AR simulation was conducted in the fourth to fifth semester of the midwifery programme. A questionnaire was developed for students (N = 133) to self-assess their competence in the categories of knowledge, confidence and practical skills. Results: Students rated their competence significantly better in the post-survey than in the pre-survey (p=<0.05). Simulation has an impact on self-assessment of professional knowledge, confidence and practical skills in emergency situations. It enhances students' procedural knowledge and practical skills in complex contexts, complements subject knowledge and builds confidence. Conclusion: The results provide initial evidence that AR simulation is an effective learning strategy for emergency management preparedness. Future studies should validate the effect with control cohorts and measure competence through practical examinations.
