Spontaneous stochasticity in the presence of intermittency

Abstract:Spontaneous stochasticity is a modern paradigm for turbulent transport at infinite Reynolds numbers. It suggests that tracer particles advected by rough turbulent flows and subject to additional thermal noise, remain non-deterministic in the limit where the random input, namely the thermal noise, vanishes. Here, we investigate the fate of spontaneous stochasticity in the presence of spatial intermittency, with multifractal scaling of the lognormal type, as usually encountered in turbulence studies. In principle, multifractality enhances the underlying roughness, and should also favor the spontaneous stochasticity. This letter exhibits a case with a less intuitive interplay between spontaneous stochasticity and spatial intermittency. We specifically address Lagrangian transport in unidimensional multifractal random flows, obtained by decorating rough Markovian monofractal Gaussian fields with frozen-in-time Gaussian multiplicative chaos. Combining systematic Monte-Carlo simulations and formal stochastic calculations, we evidence a transition between spontaneously stochastic and deterministic behaviors when increasing the level of intermittency. While its key ingredient in the Gaussian setting, roughness here suprisingly conspires against the spontaneous stochasticity of trajectories.

Abstract:Intermittency, i.e., extreme fluctuations at small scales, causes the deviation of turbulence statistics from Kolmogorov's 1941 theoretical predictions. Intermittency effects are especially strong for Lagrangian statistics. Our understanding of how Lagrangian intermittency manifests, however, is still elusive. Here, we study the Lagrangian intermittency in the framework of an exact, yet unclosed probability density function (PDF) equation. Combining this theoretical approach with data from experiments and simulations, no a priori phenomenological assumptions about the structure or properties of the flow have to be made. In this description, the non-self-similar evolution of the velocity increment PDF is determined at all scales by a single function, which is accessible through data from experiments and simulations. This 'intermittency generating function' arises from the dependence of the acceleration of a fluid element on its velocity history, thereby coupling different scales of turbulent motion. Empirically, we find that the intermittency generating function has a simple, approximately self-similar form, which has the surprising implication that Lagrangian intermittency-the absence of self-similarity in the Lagrangian velocity increment statistics-is driven by a self-similar mechanism. The simple form of the intermittency generating function furthermore allows us to formulate a simple model parametrization of the velocity increment PDFs.
Does rare, noise-induced, bypass transition in plane Couette flow bypass instantons ?

Abstract:We study rare noise induced paths that go all the way from stable laminar to transitional turbulent plane Couette flow and investigate whether these paths share the properties of classical noise induced transitions. The rare paths from laminar to turbulent flow are computed using Adaptive Multilevel Splitting, a rare event simulation method, and are validated against Direct Numerical Simulations at moderately small energy injection rate. The flow is forced outside its natural scales and redistribute energy to the unforced large scales so that the reactive trajectories display forced streamwise velocity tubes at the natural scale of velocity streaks. As the trajectory proceeds, these tubes gradually grow in amplitude until they cross the separatrix between laminar and turbulent flow. Streamwise vortices are visible after velocity tubes have reached near turbulent amplitude. As the domain size is increased from Lx * Lz=6 *4 to 36*24, spatial localisation then extension of the generated coherent streaks and vortices in the spanwise direction is observed. The paths computed in MFU display many of the characteristics of instantons, that often structure noise induced transitions: concentration of trajectories, exponentially increasing waiting times before transition, and Gumbel distribution of trajectory durations. However, bisections started on the reactive trajectories indicate that the trajectory lack two key ingredients of instantons. They do not visit the neighbourhood of the nearest saddle point and do not display the natural relaxation path from that saddle to transitional wall turbulence. The reactive paths do not concentrate more and more around the same trajectory as energy injection rate is decreased, but instead gradually move in phase space. They might reconnect with instantons at very small energy injection rate and exceedingly long waiting times.

Abstract:Intermittency effects in turbulence are discussed from a dynamical point of view. A two-fluid model is developed to describe quantitatively the non-gaussian statistics of turbulence at small scales. With a self-similarity argument, the model gives rise to the entire set of inertial range scaling exponents for normalized velocity structure functions. The results are in excellent agreement with experimental and numerical measurements. The model suggests a physical mechanism of intermittency, namely the self-interaction of turbulence structures.

Abstract:A path integral over trajectories of $2n$ fluid particles is identified with a $2n$-th order correlation function of a passive scalar convected by $d$-dimensional short-correlated multi-scale incompressible random velocity flow. Strong intermittency of the scalar is described by means of an instanton calculus (saddle point $+$ fluctuations about it) in the path integral at $n\gg d$. Anomalous scaling exponent of the $2n$-th scalar's structural function is found analytically.

Instanton-based Importance Sampling for Extreme Fluctuations in a Shell Model for Turbulent Energy Cascade

Abstract:Many out-of-equilibrium flows present non-Gaussian fluctuations in physically relevant observables, such as energy dissipation rate. This implies extreme fluctuations that, although rarely observed, have a significant phenomenology. Recently, path integral methods for importance sampling have emerged from formalism initially devised for quantum field theory and are being successfully applied to the Burgers equation and other fluid models. We proposed exploring the domain of application of these methods using a Shell Model, a dynamical system for turbulent energy cascade which can be numerically sampled for extreme events in an efficient manner and presents many interesting properties. We start from a validation of the instanton-based importance sampling methodology in the heat equation limit. We explored the limits of the method as non-linearity grows stronger, finding good qualitative results for small values of the leading non-linear coefficient. A worst agreement between numerical simulations of the whole systems and instanton results for estimation of the distribution's flatness is observed when increasing the nonlinear intensities.

Abstract:In his seminal work on turbulence, Kolmogorov made use of the stationary hypothesis to determine the power density spectrum of the velocity field in turbulent flows. However, to our knowledge, the constraints that stationary processes impose on the fluctuations of the energy flux have never been used in the context of turbulence. Here, we recall that the power density spectra of the fluctuations of the injected power, the dissipated power, and the energy flux have to converge to a common value at vanishing frequency. Hence, we show that the intermittent Gledzer-Ohkitani-Yamada (GOY) shell model fulfills these constraints. We argue that they can be related to intermittency. Indeed, we find that the constraint on the fluctuations of the energy flux implies a relation between the scaling exponents that characterize intermittency, which is verified by the GOY shell model and in agreement with the She-Leveque formula. It also fixes the intermittency parameter of the log-normal model at a realistic value. Abstract:We present a collection of eight data sets from state-of-the-art experiments and numerical simulations on turbulent velocity statistics along particle trajectories obtained in different flows with Reynolds numbers in the range R{lambda}in[120:740]. Lagrangian structure functions from all data sets are found to collapse onto each other on a wide range of time lags, pointing towards the existence of a universal behavior, within present statistical convergence, and calling for a unified theoretical description. Parisi-Frisch multifractal theory, suitably extended to the dissipative scales and to the Lagrangian domain, is found to capture the intermittency of velocity statistics over the whole three decades of temporal scales investigated here.

Abstract:In natural settings, intermittent dynamics are ubiquitous and often arise from a coupling between external driving and spatial heterogeneities. A well-known example is the generation of transient, turbulent puffs of fluid through a pipe with rough walls. Here we show how similar dynamics can emerge in a discrete, crystalline system of particles driven by noise. Polydispersity in particle masses leads to localized vibrational modes that effectuate a transition to a gas-like phase. A minimal model for the evolution of the system's mechanical energies exhibits quasi-cyclic oscillations, and a single, dimensionless number captures the essential features of the intermittent dynamics, analogous to the Reynolds number for pipe flow.

Abstract:We examine the connection between the singularities or quasisingularities in the solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation (INSE) and the local energy transfer and dissipation, in order to explore in detail how the former contributes to the phenomenon of intermittency. We do so by analyzing the velocity fields (a) measured in the experiments on the turbulent von Kármán swirling flow at high Reynolds numbers and (b) obtained from the direct numerical simulations of the INSE at a moderate resolution. To compute the local interscale energy transfer and viscous dissipation in experimental and supporting numerical data, we use the weak solution formulation generalization of the Kármán-Howarth-Monin equation. In the presence of a singularity in the velocity field, this formulation yields a nonzero dissipation (inertial dissipation) in the limit of an infinite resolution. Moreover, at finite resolutions, it provides an expression for local interscale energy transfers down to the scale where the energy is dissipated by viscosity. In the presence of a quasisingularity that is regularized by viscosity, the formulation provides the contribution to the viscous dissipation due to the presence of the quasisingularity. Therefore, our formulation provides a concrete support to the general multifractal description of the intermittency. We present the maps and statistics of the interscale energy transfer and show that the extreme events of this transfer govern the intermittency corrections and are compatible with a refined similarity hypothesis based on this transfer. We characterize the probability distribution functions of these extreme events via generalized Pareto distribution analysis and find that the widths of the tails are compatible with a similarity of the second kind. Finally, we make a connection between the topological and the statistical properties of the extreme events of the interscale energy transfer field and its multifractal properties.

Abstract:Many turbulent flows undergo drastic and abrupt configuration changes with huge impacts. As a paradigmatic example we study the multistability of jet dynamics in a barotropic beta plane model of atmosphere dynamics. It is considered as the Ising model for Jupiter troposphere dynamics. Using the adaptive multilevel splitting, a rare event algorithm, we are able to get a very large statistics of transition paths, the extremely rare transitions from one state of the system to another. This new approach opens the way for addressing a set of questions that are out of reach through direct numerical simulations. We demonstrate for the first time the concentration of transition paths close to instantons, in a numerical simulation of genuine turbulent flows. We show that the transition is a noise-activated nucleation of vorticity bands. We address for the first time the existence of Arrhenius laws in turbulent flows. The methodology we developed shall prove useful to study many other transitions related to drastic changes for the turbulent dynamics of climate, geophysical, astrophysical and engineering applications. This opens a new range of studies impossible so far, and bring turbulent phenomena in the realm of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics.
From zero-mode intermittency to hidden symmetry in random scalar advection

Abstract:The statistical behavior of scalars passively advected by random flows exhibits intermittency in the form of anomalous multiscaling, in many ways similar to the patterns commonly observed in incompressible high-Reynolds fluids. This similarity suggests a generic dynamical mechanism underlying intermittency, though its specific nature remains unclear. Scalar turbulence is framed in a linear setting that points towards a zero-mode scenario connecting anomalous scaling to the presence of statistical conservation laws; the duality is fully substantiated within Kraichnan theory of random flows. However, extending the zero-mode scenario to nonlinear settings faces formidable technical challenges. Here, we revisit the scalar problem in the light of a hidden symmetry scenario introduced in recent deterministic turbulence studies addressing the Sabra shell model and the Navier-Stokes equations. Hidden symmetry uses a rescaling strategy based entirely on symmetry considerations, transforming the original dynamics into a rescaled (hidden) system; It ultimately identifies the scaling exponents as the eigenvalues of a Perron-Frobenius operator acting on invariant measures of the rescaled equations. Considering a minimal shell model of scalar advection of the Kraichnan type that was previously studied by Biferale & Wirth, the present work extends the hidden symmetry approach to a stochastic setting, in order to explicitly contrast it with the zero-mode scenario. Our study indicates that the zero-mode and the multiplicative scenarios are intrinsically related. For systems of the Kraichnan type, the first approach provides a quantitative chararacterization of intermittency, while the second approach highlights the universal connection between the scalar case and a larger class of hydrodynamic models.

Abstract:Well defined scaling laws clearly appear in wall bounded turbulence, even very close to the wall, where a distinct violation of the refined Kolmogorov similarity hypothesis (RKSH) occurs together with the simultaneous persistence of scaling laws. A new form of RKSH for the wall region is here proposed in terms of the structure functions of order two which, in physical terms, confirms the prevailing role of the momentum transfer towards the wall in the near wall dynamics.

Abstract:We present a physical model to describe the equilibrium probability distribution function (PDF) of velocity differences across an inertial-range distance in 3D isotropic turbulence. The form of the non-Gaussian PDF agrees well with data from direct numerical simulations. It is shown that these PDFs obey a self-similar property, and the resulting inertial-range exponents of high-order velocity structure functions are in agreement with both experimental and numerical data. The model suggests a physical explanation for the phenomenon of intermittency and the nature of multifractality in fully developed turbulence, namely, local self-distortion of turbulent structures.
