Abstract:Interest in the role of learners’ personality, emotions and the learning environment in foreign language (FL) learning has grown exponentially in the past decade. The introduction of personality psychology in the field of applied linguistics has led to the inclusion of a set of personality dimensions in research designs like resilience and grit, which have been shown to be significant predictors of FL achievement. The abrupt emergence of COVID-19 in 2020 forced universities around the world to move their courses online, which has been named Emergency Remote Teaching. The sudden change in FL learning environment offers a unique opportunity to researchers to investigate whether the relationships between learners’ personality and classroom emotions in traditional ‘in-person’ classes, and the predictors of those emotions, also exist in the new online environments. The present study examined the foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) of Chinese secondary students at different instruction levels and its links with learner-internal and external factors, namely general grit and the classroom environment (CE) of the online English classes. A total of 1,526 Chinese secondary students completed an online questionnaire. Pearson correlation analyses and regression analyses revealed that general grit and CE predicted FLCA either independently or jointly. The findings are discussed and interpreted in the light of existing research on person-environment interaction. We identify avenues for further research and propose a number of pedagogical implications for optimizing online FL teaching.

Teacher support, academic engagement and learning anxiety in online foreign language learning

Abstract:Previous studies have substantiated the pivotal role of emotions and teachers in student learning, but the underlying mechanism of teachers and emotions on academic engagement remains underexplored. The present study examined the mediating role of teacher support in the relationship between foreign language learning anxiety (FLLA) and academic engagement in online classrooms. Participants were 415 Chinese university students who completed an online questionnaire. The findings of structural equation modelling indicated that teacher support had a partial mediation effect between FLLA and academic engagement. FLLA exhibited a significant negative impact on academic engagement, both directly and indirectly via perceived teacher support. Through both direct and indirect effects, FLLA could explain 44.8% of the variation in academic engagement and the mediation effect accounted for 47.3% of the total effect. The practical implication is that foreign language teachers should extend more support for learners during online learning, and provide learners with feedback adapted to their emotions. Practitioner notes What is already known about this topic Emotions have a significant impact on learners' engagement, and positive academic emotions facilitate students' engagement in the class. Students will be more engaged in learning when they perceive support from their teachers. Teacher support was an influential external predictor of students' mood swings. What this paper adds The structural equation modelling shows that teacher support served as a partial mediator between foreign language learning anxiety and academic engagement. Students' social engagement and perceived emotional support were found to have a greater impact on online foreign language learning. This paper further corroborates the relationship among the presences in the CoI framework. Implications for practice and/or policy Mitigating foreign language learning anxiety and improving teacher support are necessary for effective foreign language learning in future online classes. Teachers need to ensure continued intellectual support and provide more emotional support for learners. Teachers are recommended to deliver feedback that aligns with students' emotional state.

Abstract:A combination of analytical calculations and Monte Carlo simulations is used to find the ground-state structures in monodisperse ferrofluid monolayers under the influence of an external magnetic field. We study two different regimes, where (i) the direction of an external field is perpendicular to the monolayer plane and (ii) an external magnetic field is in the plane. In the field perpendicular to the plane we observe a transition from an ideal ferroparticle ring to a hexagonal structure. The analytical value of the critical field strength needed for this transition is obtained and shown for relatively large systems to be independent of the number of particles. For smaller systems the value of the critical field is system-size dependent and grows fast to its asymptotic value with increasing number of particles. In the case where the magnetic field is aligned parallel to the layer plane, the critical field needed to break a ring and to create a new ground-state structure, namely a ferroparticle chain, is much smaller than in the case where a field is applied perpendicularly to the plane. The analytical expression for the asymptotic critical field in case of in-plane field is found to be a decreasing function of the total particle number in a system. We characterize both transitions to be of the first-order-type transition, with magnetic susceptibility diverging near the critical point. Our studies show that the domination of the in-plane correlations of dipoles within the ferroparticle ring results in much lower magnetic in-plane susceptibility in comparison to the one perpendicular to the plane.
Examining the influence of foreign language anxiety on organizational strategies and foreign language proficiency in Chinese secondary EFL learners

Abstract:Academic anxiety is one of the prominent emotions in learning English as a foreign language (EFL), and its impact on foreign language proficiency (FLP) has been extensively documented. However, the mediating effect of cognitive strategies between foreign language anxiety (FLA) and FLP has rarely been explored. In a sample of 524 Chinese secondary school students, the present study investigated the linkage between FLA, organizational strategies, and FLP. Structural equation modelling (SEM) and mediation analysis were conducted, and three findings were identified. First, FLA was negatively correlated with the use of organizational strategies. Second, the negative correlation between FLA and FLP was identified. Third, organizational strategies fully mediated the association between FLA and FLP after controlling for gender and age. Exploring the mediating mechanism between FLA and FLP might help EFL educators take intervention measures to alleviate the negative impact of FLA on foreign language learning. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed.
Trait emotional intelligence and foreign language performance: associations with academic self-efficacy and foreign language anxiety

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed extensive research examining the influences of positive psychological factors in foreign language learning. Building on these endeavors, the current study was specifically designed to examine how positive psychological factors including trait emotional intelligence (TEI), academic self-efficacy, and foreign language anxiety (FLA) exert influences on foreign language performance in college students who are learning a foreign language. To this end, 203 Chinese college students (141 women), recruited through snowball sampling, completed three validated questionnaires to measure their TEI (Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire - Short Form), academic self-efficacy (the Chinese version of the Academic Self-Efficacy Questionnaire), and FLA levels (the Chinese version of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale). Additionally, an in-house self-rating questionnaire assessed their self-perceived foreign language performance. Mediation analysis was used to determine whether and how academic self-efficacy and FLA levels contribute separately and interactively to the relationship between TEI and foreign language performance. The results showed that: (a) there were moderate to strong associations between TEI, academic self-efficacy, FLA levels, and self-perceived foreign language performance; and (b) academic self-efficacy and FLA levels played separate and sequential mediating roles between TEI and self-perceived foreign language performance. Together, these findings highlight how TEI, academic self-efficacy, and FLA levels contribute to foreign language performance in college students. They also suggest the potential application of these positive psychological factors in mitigating anxiety elicited by learning a foreign language and improving language performance.

Abstract:Previous research on foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) has reported inconsistent findings. One significant reason is that these studies mainly adopted a data-driven approach and lacked a strong theoretical basis. This study thus examined the factors underlying FLCA with worry-emotionality theorization of anxiety (Liebert, Robert M. & Larry W. Morris. 1967. Cognitive and emotional components of test anxiety: A distinction and some initial data. Psychological Reports 20. 975–978). A preliminary survey was conducted to validate the original FLCAS with 603 English majors from two Chinese universities, and 20 of them were invited for individual interviews to better understand the factors contributing to their FLCA. Based on these, a questionnaire was constructed through adapting the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) and used in a main survey among 557 Chinese university English majors. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed to analyse the survey data, while thematic analysis was used to analyse the interview data. In addition to three factors reported in the FLCA factor validation literature, communication apprehension, self-confidence in speaking English and fear of negative evaluation, this study identified peer pressure as a new factor. The findings reveal the multidimensional nature of FLCA and support the worry-emotionality theorization of anxiety. Implications for the conceptualization of FLCA are discussed.

Correlation between Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety and Foreign Language Achievement of Freshman and Teaching Enlightenment: A Case Study of Chinese Medical Students

Abstract:Anxiety in foreign language study is a kind of situational anxiety, which is called foreign language classroom anxiety(FLCA).It can be classified into three dimensions: communication anxiety, negative evaluation anxiety and test anxiety. In this paper, the Horwitz Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) was conducted on 273 freshmen majoring in medicine in medical colleges by random sampling. The results indicated that there is a significant positive correlation between students' communication anxiety, negative evaluation anxiety and English achievement. When students' communicative and negative evaluation anxiety level is increasing, their English learning achievement will also show an upward trend. On the contrary, students' test anxiety and English learning achievement has significant negative correlation. When students' test anxiety level continues to increase, their corresponding English achievement will show a downward trend. And it was found that communication anxiety accounted for the highest proportion among the three dimensions. Accordingly, this paper proposes some teaching Enlightenments aimed at relieving medical students' anxiety in college English class. This study conducted a preliminary study of specific anxieties present in a foreign language learning classroom. The findings provide evidence to elucidate the characterization of anxiety and its effects.
Foreign Language Enjoyment and Classroom Anxiety of Chinese EFL Learners With Intermediate and Low English Proficiency

Abstract:Driven by Positive Psychology, research on emotions in second language acquisition has moved from The Anxiety-Prevailing Phase to Positive and Negative Emotions Phase (Dewaele & Li, 2020). A growing number of scholars begin to study learners’ emotions from a more holistic perspective. The present study investigated the levels and sources of foreign language enjoyment (FLE) and foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) of 231 Chinese EFL undergraduates with intermediate and low English proficiency. The study found moderate levels of both FLE and FLCA among participants. However, the level of FLE was much lower than the international and domestic samples, while the level of FLCA showed the opposite pattern. There was no significant gender difference emerged for FLE, while female participants reported more FLCA than their male counterparts. Moreover, no significant difference was found in the levels of both FLE and FLCA between intermediate and low English proficiency students. Qualitative data analysis confirmed that FLE was closely related to teacher factors while FLCA was more related to learners themselves. Based on these findings, pedagogical implications were provided for EFL teaching in China.
The Relationship Between Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety, Motivation and their Predictive Effects on Chinese University Students’ English Learning Achievement

Abstract:In the field of Second Language Acquisition, there are few experimental studies that concentrate on the relationships between FLCA, FLLM, and English Learning Achievement (ELA) among Chinese university students. Previous studies in second language acquisition have examined the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCA) and Foreign Language Learning Motivation (FLLM) in China. This study investigates the relationship between FLCA, FLLM, and ELA among non-English major students from a university in Wuhan, China. 227 participants completed the questionnaire assessing FLCA, FLLM, and provided their ELA scores through final-term English tests. The findings revealed that Chinese university students exhibited moderate FLCA levels but relatively high FLLM. While FLCA demonstrated a significantly negative link with FLA, there was a substantial positive correlation between FLLM and FLA. FLCA emerged as a strong negative predictor of ELA, while FLLM significantly predicted ELA in a positive direction. These findings underscore the importance of addressing FLCA and fostering FLLM to enhance English learning outcomes among Chinese university students in similar educational settings.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on education worldwide. The disease first hit China and numerous Chinese cities then started to conduct online courses. Therefore, this study aims to explore the effect of the Shanghai students’ emotional intelligence, learning motivation, and self-efficacy on their academic achievement when they participated in online English classes during the latter phase of the pandemic in China. Furthermore, the research also examines whether the students’ emotional intelligence can influence their academic achievement through the mediation effect of their learning motivation and self-efficacy. Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) and the social cognitive Expectancy-Value Model were employed to build the research framework, and the method of structural equation modeling (SEM) was utilized to conduct the model verification. Ten universities in Shanghai, China were selected for sampling. In total, 450 students were surveyed of which 404 questionnaires were valid. The results show that the students’ emotional intelligence did not directly affect their academic achievement. Nevertheless, the students’ emotional intelligence had a positive effect on their learning motivation and self-efficacy. In addition, mediation analysis showed that the relation between emotional intelligence and academic achievement was sequentially mediated by learning motivation and self-efficacy.

Changes in and Effects of Anxiety on English Test Performance in Chinese Postgraduate EFL Classrooms

Abstract:As an important affective factor in language learning, foreign language anxiety (FLA) has been extensively researched. Nevertheless, not many studies have targeted postgraduate students or been longitudinal to reveal the dynamic nature of FLA. Hence, the present quantitative study examined changes in and effects of FLA on postgraduate students’ performance over a 10-week period. A total of 324 postgraduate students from a prestigious university took a pretest and posttest, answered a set of questionnaires before (phase 1) and after (phase 2) the 10-week period, respectively. Analyses of the data revealed three major findings: (1) Toward the end of the period, the respondents became significantly less apprehensive of speech communication in English and less worried about the English class, English classroom performance, and other students’ performance. Their overall English language classroom anxiety was significantly lower as well, though they became significantly more worried about tests. (2) In both phases, anxiety was largely highly related to students’ performance in English speaking, listening, reading, and writing tests as well as the overall test performance, especially speaking test performance. Nevertheless, this correlation became weaker in phase 2. (3) In both phases, foreign language classroom anxiety and achievement anxiety powerfully predicted students’ English test performance, especially speaking test performance. These results show that FLA is an important issue even for postgraduate students, affecting their test performance to varying degrees over time. Based on these findings, implications and suggestions are discussed.
The predictive effects of foreign language enjoyment, anxiety, and boredom on general and domain-specific English achievement in online English classrooms

Abstract:This non-experimental study employed three questionnaires adopted from and validated by prior studies. To carry out the study, an electronic survey created through Wenjuanxing , a computer program for conducting an online survey in China, was employed and convenience sampling technique was used. Guided by the control-value theory of educational psychology, as well as the broaden-and-build theory and the well-being theory of Positive Psychology, this questionnaire study investigated 880 non-English major freshmen’ foreign language enjoyment (FLE), foreign language class anxiety (FLCA), and foreign language boredom (FLB) in online English courses, as well as their correlations. Also measured were their joint predictive effects on the general and domain-specific learning outcomes of online English classrooms (reading-to-writing group and speaking group). With statistical analysis carried out by SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 23.0, the results showed that: (1) learners had relatively high levels of FLE and FLCA, but a medium level of FLB; (2) a small negative correlation was found between students’ FLE and FLCA, a medium to high negative correlation between FLE and FLB, and a small to medium positive correlation between FLCA and FLB; FLE has a significant positive correlation with learners’ actual performance and self-perceived performance, while FLCA and FLB have a significant negative correlation with both; and (3) After entering the same regression model, all three emotions have a significant predictive effect on learners’ self-perceived performance while only FLE and FLCA had a significant predictive effect on their actual performance in the online context. Domain-specifically, the reading-and-writing group demonstrated similar trends while there were no significant correlations between emotions and actual performance in the speaking group. The findings can provide pedagogical implications for online foreign language teaching and theoretical contribution to foreign language emotion research.

Abstract:Background/purpose In the context of deepening globalization, English, as the primary language for international communication, has become an indispensable component of personal academic, professional, and social capabilities. For college students, English proficiency is not only a key factor for academic success but also a crucial source of competitiveness in the future job market. By identifying key psychological factors such as classroom anxiety, learning motivation, and self-efficacy, this study aims to elucidate how these factors influence college students' English achievement, thereby filling the research gap in the current literature and proposing targeted educational strategies to improve students' English learning outcomes. Methods This study adopts Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) and Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as its theoretical framework, constructing a model to explore the relationships among classroom anxiety, learning motivation, self-efficacy, and English achievement. Data were collected from 1000 randomly selected college students using the classroom anxiety scale, English learning motivation Scale, self-efficacy scale, and self-perceived English proficiency scale to analyze the impact of these psychological factors on English achievement. Results The results indicate that classroom anxiety significantly negatively affects English achievement (β = −0.296; p < 0.001) and self-efficacy (β = −0.242; p < 0.001), while learning motivation (β = 0.145; p < 0.001) and self-efficacy (β = 0.328; p < 0.001) both significantly positively affect English Achievement. Further analysis reveals that self-efficacy plays a partial mediating role between classroom anxiety and English achievement, as well as between learning motivation and English achievement. Conclusion Classroom anxiety and learning motivation are important predictors of English achievement, with self-efficacy playing a critical mediating role. This finding highlights the importance of assessing and intervening in these psychological factors to improve English learning outcomes in the Chinese educational context. The results of this study not only provide new insights into the existing literature but also offer practical recommendations for educators and policymakers to better support students in their English learning.

Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety, Gender, Discipline, and English Test Performance: A Cross-lagged Regression Study

Abstract:The present research investigated the quasi-causal relationship between foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) and English performance in relation to gender and discipline via cross-lagged regression analyses. A total of 934 freshmen from a well-known state-owned university in Beijing answered the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale and a background questionnaire at the beginning and the end of a term. Their English test scores in both phases were also collected. Results demonstrated that FLCA was significantly negatively correlated with English test performance for all students. Another major finding was that the overall FLCA, low self-confidence in speaking English, and worry about English classroom performance impacted the students' test performance differently, depending on gender and discipline, so did test performance impact different aspects of FLCA. These findings show that FLCA is a primary cause for test performance, while the latter is not necessarily an important cause for the former.

An empirical investigation of the relationship between individual learner factors and foreign language speaking anxiety in EFL university learners

Abstract:The current study recruited 306 participants (males=194, females= 112) to fill out a questionnaire consisting of two sections for demographic information and a second section with 38 close-ended items to investigate the structural relationships among individual learner factors and anxiety when speaking a foreign language in Chinese EFL university learners. These factors included exposure to English, attitude towards learning English, perceived oral proficiency, years of learning English, perceived effectiveness of the use of social media, perceived competence and parental education status. The findings of the direct effects indicated that exposure to English, attitude towards learning English and perceived oral proficiency were negatively correlated whereas years of learning English and the perceived effectiveness of social media had an insignificant effect on foreign language speaking anxiety. In addition, according to the indirect predictive effects of perceived competence (mediator) on foreign language speaking anxiety, all other factors with the exception of years of learning English were found to be positively mediated by perceived competence. Lastly, the moderating effect of parental education status indicated that the interaction term (perceived competence x parental education status) had a negative and significant effect on foreign language speaking anxiety. The findings indicate that speaking anxiety exists in and out of class and can cause a detrimental effect on university learners’ communication and speaking skills due to a lack of confidence, practice, exposure and interaction. This research provides several insightful practical implications for EFL teachers and policymakers.
Interactions of trait emotional intelligence, foreign language anxiety, and foreign language enjoyment in the foreign language speaking classroom

Abstract:The present study investigated the interactions of trait emotional intelligence (trait EI), foreign language anxiety (FLA), and foreign language enjoyment (FLE) in the foreign language speaking classroom. Data collected from 274 Chinese postgraduate EFL learners showed that the subjects generally had medium to high scores on global trait EI; in terms of the four trait EI factors, they scored relatively high on emotionality and well-being, followed in turn by self-control and sociability. They had high mean levels of FLE and moderate to high mean levels of FLA. Significant small to medium correlations were found between trait EI, FLE, and FLA. Regressions revealed that trait EI was a stronger predictor of FLA than of FLE. Trait EI played a fundamental role in its significant interactions with FLA and FLE. In addition, well-being and emotionality figured significantly to both FLE and FLA, while sociability only significantly predicted FLA. High levels of self-control hindered the effect of other significant factors. It is implied that fostering learners' trait EI can potentially boost FLE and alleviate FLA. The findings also offer suggestions for the development of EI-based intervention programmes.

The Impact of EFL Learners' Negative Emotional Orientations on (Un)Willingness to Communicate in In-person and Online L2 Learning Contexts

Abstract:The present study explored how negative emotional orientations (i.e., anxiety, boredom, and demotivation) may contribute to English as a foreign language (EFL) learners' willingness to communicate (WTC) in in-person and online classes. In doing so, a total of 290 university students majoring in English were recruited to fill in a set of scales. The structural equation modeling analysis indicated that foreign language classroom anxiety (FLA) and L2 demotivation have a direct impact on EFL learners' in-person and online L2WTC. While L2 demotivation was the strongest significant predictor of learners' in-person L2WTC, FLA was the strongest predictor of online L2WTC. Additionally, there was a positive correlation among FLA, L2 demotivation, and foreign language classroom boredom (FLB). While FLA demonstrated no direct impact on communication willingness, it exhibited significant indirect paths to in-person L2WTC via the full mediation of L2 demotivation and FLA . Although the result did not show any significant direct impact of FLB on online L2WTC, it had a small yet significant indirect path to online L2WTC through the full mediation of FLA. FLA also revealed indirect significant paths to online L2WTC through FLB and L2 demotivation. The implications for L2 teachers and teacher educators will be further discussed.

Abstract:This study delves into the causes and impacts of foreign language learning anxiety among Chinese university students, a topic of significant relevance in the context of China's increasingly globalized educational landscape. Recognizing the crucial role of language proficiency in both academic and professional arenas, this research aims to unravel the multifaceted nature of anxiety experienced by students in learning foreign languages, particularly focusing on the Chinese higher education environment. The research identifies several key factors contributing to language learning anxiety. High-stakes testing culture, traditional pedagogical approaches focusing on rote memorization, and societal emphasis on academic perfection emerge as primary contributors. These elements, coupled with limited opportunities for practical language application, create an environment where anxiety can thrive. The study also notes the influence of personal factors such as students' self-perceptions and previous language learning experiences on their anxiety levels. In terms of impact, the study finds that language learning anxiety significantly hampers students' academic performance, particularly in language proficiency and participation in language classes. Moreover, it extends beyond academic ramifications, affecting students' motivation, attitude towards language learning, and overall psychological well-being. The anxiety experienced in the classroom can lead to broader issues of social withdrawal and diminished self-confidence, with potential long-term implications for students' professional development and global competency. The study's findings underscore the need for educational reforms and the introduction of teaching methods that emphasize interactive learning and communication skills, aimed at reducing anxiety and enhancing language proficiency. The research also highlights the importance of psychological support for students, suggesting that addressing emotional and psychological factors is as crucial as improving pedagogical strategies in foreign language education. In conclusion, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the causes and impacts of foreign language learning anxiety among Chinese university students. It offers insights for educators, policymakers, and mental health professionals, suggesting a holistic approach to language education that addresses both the academic and emotional needs of students, thereby enhancing the overall quality of language learning experiences in China.
Classroom environment and willingness to communicate in English: The mediating role of emotions experienced by university students in China

Abstract:Language Teaching Research, Ahead of Print. The present study examines the direct and indirect relationships between classroom environment (CE), L2 (second/foreign language) learner emotions (i.e. enjoyment, anxiety and boredom), and their willingness to communicate (WTC) in classes for English as a foreign language (EFL). Participants were 2,268 university students in China. Pearson correlation analyses showed significant correlations between CE, L2 emotions, and WTC, with effect sizes ranging from small to large. In addition, the three L2 emotions were found to mediate the relationship between CE and WTC in parallel, with enjoyment having the largest mediating effect, followed by anxiety and boredom. The findings offer insights into how to improve students' WTC in an L2.

Abstract:Background Considerable evidence suggests that students' achievement emotions are important contributors to their learning and success online. It is, therefore, essential to understand and support students' emotional experiences to enhance online education, especially under the COVID‐19 context. However, to date, very few studies have investigated how students' achievement emotions might be affected by teaching and learning factors in online learning environments. Objectives Based on Pekrun's (2006) control‐value theory of achievement emotions, this study examined the influence of students' perceived online teaching quality and appraisals of control and value on their achievement emotions in an online second language (L2) learning context instigated by the COVID‐19. Methods Data were collected using an online survey of 1503 undergraduates from ten universities across different regions of China. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were performed to test the validity of the instruments and structural equation modelling were conducted to examine the relations between L2 teaching and learning variables. Results and Conclusions Results revealed that perceived teacher internet and communication technology competence had positive effects on enjoyment, but negative effects on anxiety and boredom, and these effects were fully mediated by perceived control and/or value. Perceived chaotic teaching structure (CTS) had reverse effects for the three emotions. Perceived CTS effects on enjoyment and anxiety were fully and partially mediated by perceived control, respectively. Takeaways Online teaching quality is critical for students' appraisals and emotions towards L2 learning. Teachers should strive to improve online teaching quality and design interventions targeting students' perceived control and value to temper their affective experiences associated with the crisis‐prompted online teaching practices.
