Abstract:Computational aesthetic evaluation of artworks has become an active research direction in recent years. However, current works mainly focus on oil paintings and photographs, there have been few attempts in quantitative aesthetic evaluation of Chinese ink paintings. Chinese ink painting uses ink blended with water and a variation of brushwork to depict picture, which differs significantly from photographs and oil paintings in visual features, semantic features, and aesthetic principles. Aiming at this problem, we propose a framework of self-adaptive computational aesthetic evaluation of Chinese ink paintings based on deep learning technique. Firstly, we build an aesthetic evaluation standard dataset for ink painting images. Secondly, according to aesthetic principles of Chinese ink paintings, we design a multi-view parallel deep neural network by taking global images and local patches as multi-column inputs to extract deep aesthetic features. Finally, we build a self-adaptive deep aesthetic model of Chinese ink paintings based on subject query mechanism. Experimental results show that, compared with the basic VGG16 architecture, our multi-view network that contains six paralleled subject convolution groups has higher aesthetic evaluation performance, the deep aesthetic features outperform the traditional hand-crafted features, and our proposed self-adaptive model can predict human aesthetic decision with highly significant Pearson correlation of 0.823, with mean squared error of 0.161. Moreover, interference experiments show that our network is sensitive to painting factors including composition, ink color, and texture. Our work not only offers a deeply-learned-based reference framework for quantitative aesthetic evaluation of Chinese paintings, but also reveals the relationship between human aesthetic perceptions and deeply-learned features extracted from Chinese ink paintings.
An Adaptive Weight Value-Based Multi-Scale Retinex Algorithm for Color Image Enhancement

Abstract:There are limited dynamic range problems when real world scenes are captured from a digital camera and displayed on monitors. Retinex is one of the most popular theories for dynamic range compression, color constancy and color rendition. However, there still exist some problems, such as hue shift and excessive noise, especially for those images including large bright areas and dark regions. In order to solve these problems, an adaptive weight value-based multi-scale retinex algorithm is proposed in this paper. Compared to other methods, visual experiments and data evaluation show that the proposed algorithms can achieve better performance for color image enhancement and noise suppression simultaneously. What is more, there is no need for color correction phase in the proposed algorithm, which makes it more efficient and convenient to apply.
A Neural Network Based Low-Light Image Denoising Method

Abstract:Low-light image denoising has been a hotspot for its great importance in solving vision applications, and various solutions have been proposed. In recent years, neural network has shown great potential in single image denoising. However, lacking ground truth data, most existing neural network based methods only train on images synthesized by Gaussian noise or Poisson noise or mixed Poisson-Gaussian noise rather than realistic low-light images. In this paper, we introduce a novel convolutional neural network based model for low-light image denoising. In particular, we also present a method to collecting realistic low-light images and our neural network model is trained on the obtained dataset. Evaluating experiment results by the subjective visual observation as well as the objective quality measures shows that the proposed neural network based method is comparable to state-of-the-art.

Abstract:Computational photo quality evaluation is a useful technique in many tasks of computer vision and graphics, for example, photo retaregeting, 3-D rendering, and fashion recommendation. The conventional photo quality models are designed by characterizing the pictures from all communities (e.g., “architecture” and “colorful”) indiscriminately, wherein community-specific features are not exploited explicitly. In this article, we develop a new community-aware photo quality evaluation framework. It uncovers the latent community-specific topics by a regularized latent topic model (LTM) and captures human visual quality perception by exploring multiple attributes. More specifically, given massive-scale online photographs from multiple communities, a novel ranking algorithm is proposed to measure the visual/semantic attractiveness of regions inside each photograph. Meanwhile, three attributes, namely: 1) photo quality scores; weak semantic tags; and inter-region correlations, are seamlessly and collaboratively incorporated during ranking. Subsequently, we construct the gaze shifting path (GSP) for each photograph by sequentially linking the top-ranking regions from each photograph, and an aggregation-based CNN calculates the deep representation for each GSP. Based on this, an LTM is proposed to model the GSP distribution from multiple communities in the latent space. To mitigate the overfitting problem caused by communities with very few photographs, a regularizer is incorporated into our LTM. Finally, given a test photograph, we obtain its deep GSP representation and its quality score is determined by the posterior probability of the regularized LTM. Comparative studies on four image sets have shown the competitiveness of our method. Besides, the eye-tracking experiments have demonstrated that our ranking-based GSPs are highly consistent with real human gaze movements.

Abstract:Traditional Retinex model-based image enhancement methods require careful design of constraints and parameters to handle this highly ill-conditioned decomposition. With the advancement of deep learning algorithms, low-light image enhancement has also achieved deep processing. However, image enhancement based on the RGB color space model is prone to color distortions when enhancing images under the influence of the correlation of the three primary colors of RGB. In this report we apply the HSV color space technique to a Retinex-based network model. Simulations and experiments show that using HSV space-improved deep neural networks can effectively avoid the color distortion problem.

Abstract:As we know, image colorization is widely used in computer graphics, which has become a research hotspot in the field of image processing.Image colorization is widely used in computer graphics, which has become a research hotspot in the field of image processing.The current image colorization technology has the phenomenon of single coloring effect and unreal color, which is too complicated to be implemented and struggled to gain popularity. In this paper, a new method based on convolution neural network is proposed to study the reasonable coloring of human images, which ensures the realism of the coloring effect and the diversity of coloring at the same time.First, this paper selects about 5000 pictures of people and plants from the Imagenet dataset, and makes a small dataset containing only people and backgrounds. Secondly, in order to obtain the image segmentation results, this paper improves the U-net network and carries out three times of down sampling and three times of up sampling. Finally, we add the expanded convolution, and use the sigmiod activation function to replace the ReLU(The Rectified Linear Unit) activation function and put the BN(Batch Normalization) before the activation function. Experimental results show that our proposed image colorization algorithm based on deep learning scheme can reduce the training time of the network and achieve higher quality segmentation results.

Abstract:This paper presents an in-depth analysis and research on the application of intelligent image color technology in teaching Chinese painting color. A feature reorganization-based approach to Chinese painting image style migration is proposed. Using the connection between depth features in neural networks and image semantics, the artistic style expression method of traditional Chinese painting is combined with existing methods to match the feature matrix in the generative network by feature reorganization, and finally, the migrated image is generated using a decoder. The texture of the target image is input to the generator as an additional condition, and the discriminator is changed to a relativistic discriminator to build a new generative adversarial network. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, a large number of Chinese ink and wash style landscape paintings and natural landscape photos are used as experimental data. The experimental results show that the obtained generated images after style migration are 8% better in realism and quality. An image color intelligent analysis system was designed, which integrates a color classification module, a pigment analysis module, an output saving module, and a pigment sample library to achieve the automatic classification of different color areas in Chinese painting, and ultimately allows a judgment to be made on the most likely pigment to be used for each type of color. In the teaching of Chinese painting, the system can transform the traditional "ear-listening" color transmission through vision into eye perception, which makes the teaching of Chinese painting vivid, arouses the enthusiasm of the classroom, and greatly promotes the color teaching of Chinese painting.

Abstract:Photo quality assessment from the view of human aesthetics, which tries to classify images into the categories of good and bad, has drawn a lot of attention in computer vision field. Up to now, experts have proposed many methods to deal with this problem. Most of those methods are based on the design of hand-crafted features. However, due to the complexity and subjectivity of human’s aesthetic activities, it is difficult to describe and model all the factors that affect the photo aesthetic quality. Therefore those methods just obtain limited success. On the other hand, deep convolutional neural network has been proved to be effective in many computer vision problems and it does not need human efforts in the design of features. In this paper, we try to adopt a deep convolutional neural network that “understands” images well to conduct the photo aesthetic quality assessment. Firstly, we implement a deep convolutional neural network which has eight layers and millions of parameters. Then to “teach” this network enough knowledge about images, we train it on the ImageNet which is one of the largest available image database. Next, for each given image, we take the activations of the last layer of the neural network as its aesthetic feature. The experimental results on two large and reliable image aesthetic quality assessment datasets prove the effectiveness of our method.
A Neural Network Model for Color Element Data Analysis for Urban Spatial Environment

Abstract:In this paper, a CNN model for color element data analysis of the urban spatial environment is constructed through an in-depth study of color element data analysis. This paper investigates a high-order structure formed by a few nodes; it proposes a motif-based graph autoencoder MODEL, combining redefined first- and second-order similarities and perfectly integrating motif structure and autoencoder. The algorithm first proposes an efficient graph transformation method to add the influence of central nodes. It then offers a primary awareness mechanism to aggregate the information of noncentral neighbors. Cen GCN_D and Cen GCN_E outperform the latest algorithms in node classification, link prediction, node clustering, and network visualization. As the number of network layers increases, the advantages of these two variants become progressively more prominent. This paper uses a support vector machine to implement classification validation based on CNN. The experimental results show that when 450 images are randomly selected as training data, the classification accuracy obtained by using the features of different CNN output layers is distributed between 91.4% and 95.2%. When the training set of the experiment reaches more than 300, the accuracy can exceed 90%, and the experimental results corresponding to different training sets a more stable trend. Finally, the trained classifier model is obtained in this thesis, which achieves the purpose of fast classification prediction based on CNN for color element data analysis of urban spatial environments.

Training data were obtained from a visual matching experiment and the commonly used CIECAM02 model to set up a link between the device parameters and human color perception. The process of training neural networks is presented. An experiment simulating an office environment was conducted, together with a user study, to verify the performance of the proposed method in identifying and reproducing color.

Abstract:This work was conducted to study the Chinese painting color teaching analysis of intelligent image color processing technology under the network environment. First, the paper preprocesses the obtained color mural images, realizes the automatic recognition and marking of the images with different defect degrees and color fading, and uses denoising and texture background elimination to remove unnecessary background information. Then, according to the characteristic that the repair order of boundary points in the Criminisi algorithm is determined by the size of priority weight, the data items and confidence items are added. Finally, the design uses image processing technology and the loss formula to identify the connecting edge of the color area to be taught, establish the color extraction area, calculate the bit weight of the best color, find out the color extraction position, and synthesize different colors according to the original painting color superposition method. The partial differential equation is used to set the teaching code of color teaching system to realize the teaching of Chinese painting color. The experimental results show that compared with the original teaching system, the designed color teaching system has a stronger ability to recognize the edge of Chinese painting color teaching, and the quality of Chinese painting after teaching is higher. It can be seen that the color teaching system can be applied to the color teaching of Chinese painting.
Refined image quality assessment for color fundus photography based on deep learning

Abstract:Purpose Color fundus photography is widely used in clinical and screening settings for eye diseases. Poor image quality greatly affects the reliability of further evaluation and diagnosis. In this study, we developed an automated assessment module for color fundus photography image quality assessment using deep learning. Methods A total of 55,931 color fundus photography images from multiple centers in Shanghai and the public database were collected and annotated as training, validation, and testing data sets. The pre-diagnosis image quality assessment module based on the multi-task deep neural network was designed. The detailed criterion of color fundus photography image quality including three subcategories with three levels of grading was applied to improve precision and objectivity. The auxiliary tasks such as the localization of the optic nerve head and macula, the classification of laterality, and the field of view were also included to assist the quality assessment. Finally, we validated our module internally and externally by evaluating the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and quadratic weighted Kappa. Results The “Location” subcategory achieved area under the receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.991, 0.920, and 0.946 for the three grades, respectively. The “Clarity” subcategory achieved area under the receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.980, 0.917, and 0.954 for the three grades, respectively. The “Artifact” subcategory achieved area under the receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.976, 0.952, and 0.986 for the three grades, respectively. The accuracy and Kappa of overall quality reach 88.15% and 89.70%, respectively, on the internal set. These two indicators on the external set were 86.63% and 88.55%, respectively, which were very close to that of the internal set. Conclusions This work showed that our deep module was able to evaluate the color fundus photography image quality using more detailed three subcategories with three grade criteria. The promising results on both internal and external validation indicated the strength and generalizability of our module.

Abstract:Color edition is an important issue in image processing and graphic design. This paper presents a deep color decomposition based framework for image recoloring, allowing users to achieve professional color edition through simple interactive operations. Different from existing methods that perform palette generation and color decomposition separately, our method directly generates the recolored images by a light-weight CNN. We first formulate the generation of color palette as an unsupervised clustering problem, and employ a fully point-wise CNN to extract the most representative colors from the input image. Particularly, a pixel scrambling strategy is adopted to map the continuous image color to a compact discrete palette space, facilitating the CNN focus on color-relevant features. Then, we devise a deep color decomposition network to obtain the projected weights of input image on the basis colors of the generated palette space, and leverage them for image recoloring in a user-interacted manner. In addition, a novel aesthetic constraint derived from color harmony theory is proposed to augment the color reconstruction from user-specified colors, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing visual effect. Qualitative comparisons with existing methods demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Abstract:For many computer vision problems, the deep neural networks are trained and validated based on the assumption that the input images are pristine (i.e., artifact-free). However, digital images are subject to a wide range of distortions in real application scenarios, while the practical issues regarding image quality in high level visual information understanding have been largely ignored. In this paper, in view of the fact that most widely deployed deep learning models are susceptible to various image distortions, the distorted images are involved for data augmentation in the deep neural network training process to learn a reliable model for practical applications. In particular, an image quality assessment based label smoothing method, which aims at regularizing the label distribution of training images, is further proposed to tune the objective functions in learning the neural network. Experimental results show that the proposed method is effective in dealing with both low and high quality images in the typical image classification task.

Deep learning-based pigment analysis model trained with optical approach and ground truth assistance

Abstract:This study introduces an integrated training method combining the optical approach with ground truth for skin pigment analysis. Deep learning is increasingly applied to skin pigment analysis, primarily melanin and hemoglobin. While regression analysis is a widely used training method to predict ground truth-like outputs, the input image resolution is restricted by computational resources. The optical approach-based regression method can alleviate this problem, but compromises performance. We propose a strategy to overcome the limitation of image resolution while preserving performance by incorporating ground truth within the optical approach-based learning structure. The proposed model decomposes skin images into melanin, hemoglobin, and shading maps, reconstructing them by solving the forward problem with reference to the ground truth for pigments. Evaluation against the VISIA system, a professional diagnostic equipment, yields correlation coefficients of 0.978 for melanin and 0.975 for hemoglobin. Furthermore, our model can produce pigment-modified images for applications like simulating treatment effects.
Design of Eye Health Monitoring System Under Color Fundus Image Visual Cup Segmentation Algorithm

Abstract:In order to study the application of color fundus image (CFI) visual cup segmentation (VCS) algorithm in the design of eye health monitoring system and solve the problem that traditional image processing technology requires artificial design features, which is time-consuming, laborious, and inaccurate, deep learning (DL) algorithm is combined with residual neural network (RNN) to propose a new eye health monitoring system based on CFI VCS algorithm. Firstly, the forward propagation (FP) algorithm and back propagation (BP) algorithm of DL are theoretically derived and improved. Then, the eye health monitoring and image processing system is designed and optimized with RNN. Finally, the effect analysis VCS of the system is carried out on the real data center platform; the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of image processing are compared with the traditional manual processing technology and the general residual network technology. The results show that the results of RIM-ONE data set and Glaucoma Repo data set are consistent with the expert standard; in the RIM-ONE data set, the accuracy rate, sensitivity, and specificity of traditional manual processing technology are 69.68%, 71.38%, and 74.71% respectively; the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of common residual network technology are 81.89%, 80.56%, and 86.82% respectively; the accuracy of the system is 93.57%, the sensitivity is 87.31%, and the specificity is 90.16%. In the Glaucoma Repo data set, the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of conventional manual processing technology are 75.28%, 73.35%, and 82.63% respectively; the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of common residual network technology are 82.74%, 81.49%, and 88.82% respectively; the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the system are 94.66%, 91.33%, and 94.22% respectively, which show that the system has a good effect on the segmentation of CFI, can adapt to various features of the image, has a high degree of accuracy and robustness, and provides a new way of thinking for the monitoring and management of eye health in daily life.
A Deep Evaluator for Image Retargeting Quality by Geometrical and Contextual Interaction

Abstract:An image is compressed or stretched during the multidevice displaying, which will have a very big impact on perception quality. In order to solve this problem, a variety of image retargeting methods have been proposed for the retargeting process. However, how to evaluate the results of different image retargeting is a very critical issue. In various application systems, the subjective evaluation method cannot be applied on a large scale. So we put this problem in the accurate objective-quality evaluation. Currently, most of the image retargeting quality assessment algorithms use simple regression methods as the last step to obtain the evaluation result, which are not corresponding with the perception simulation in the human vision system (HVS). In this paper, a deep quality evaluator for image retargeting based on the segmented stacked AutoEnCoder (SAE) is proposed. Through the help of regularization, the designed deep learning framework can solve the overfitting problem. The main contributions in this framework are to simulate the perception of retargeted images in HVS. Especially, it trains two separated SAE models based on geometrical shape and content matching. Then, the weighting schemes can be used to combine the obtained scores from two models. Experimental results in three well-known databases show that our method can achieve better performance than traditional methods in evaluating different image retargeting results.
DDColor: Towards Photo-Realistic Image Colorization via Dual Decoders

Abstract:Image colorization is a challenging problem due to multi-modal uncertainty and high ill-posedness. Directly training a deep neural network usually leads to incorrect semantic colors and low color richness. While transformer-based methods can deliver better results, they often rely on manually designed priors, suffer from poor generalization ability, and introduce color bleeding effects. To address these issues, we propose DDColor, an end-to-end method with dual decoders for image colorization. Our approach includes a pixel decoder and a query-based color decoder. The former restores the spatial resolution of the image, while the latter utilizes rich visual features to refine color queries, thus avoiding hand-crafted priors. Our two decoders work together to establish correlations between color and multi-scale semantic representations via cross-attention, significantly alleviating the color bleeding effect. Additionally, a simple yet effective colorfulness loss is introduced to enhance the color richness. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DDColor achieves superior performance to existing state-of-the-art works both quantitatively and qualitatively. Advanced Retinex-Net Image Enhancement Method Based on Value Component Processing

Abstract:When capturing images under low-light lighting conditions, the resulting images often suffer low visibility. Such low-visibility images not only affect the visual effect but also cause many difficulties in practical application. Therefore, image enhancement technology under low-light conditions has always been a challenging problem in image algorithms. Considering that most of the existing image enhancement methods are based on the RGB color space enhancement technology, the correlation among the RGB three primary colors is ignored, which makes the color distortion phenomenon easy to occur when the image is enhanced. To solve the problems of poor image visibility and color deviation under low-light conditions, in this paper an advanced Retinex network enhancement method is proposed. In the method, firstly the low-light RGB image is transformed into HSV color space, the Retinex decomposition network is used to decompose and enhance the value component separately, and thus increasing the resolution of the value component through up-sampling operation; then, for the hue component and saturation component, the nearest neighbor interpolation is used to increase their resolutions, and the enhanced value component is combined to convert back to RGB color space to obtain the initial enhanced image; finally, the wavelet transform image fusion technology is used to fuse with the original low-light image to eliminate the over-enhanced part in the initial enhanced image. The analysis of experimental results shows that the method proposed in this paper has obvious advantages in brightness enhancement and color restoration of low-light images. Especially, comparing with the original Retinex network method, the NIQE value decreases by an average of 19.49%, and the image standard deviation increases by an average of 41.35%. The algorithm proposed in this paper is expected to be effectively used in the fields of security monitoring and biomedicine.
