Abstract:BACKGROUND: Specific Learning difficulties constitute a continuity of complex disorders, which unfold across the lifespan and are associated with a wide range of mental disorders. In order to determine the importance of specific learning difficulties as an underlying factor in various mental disorders, we investigated associations between mental disorders and factors related to learning difficulties, poor family and school environment, and social and psycho-emotional disorders.METHODS: This retrospective study is based on data from 835 case histories of adults who were treated at the Psychiatric Clinic of the University Hospital in Ioannina, Greece, between 1992 and 2008. The examination of the early (co-)occurrence of specific disorders was based on the ICD-10 classification of mental disorders. LogLinear analysis showed that all models retained 2nd or 3rd order effects with p-values >0.8 for all estimated likelihood ratios.RESULTS: Patients with specific learning difficulties, who grew up in a socially disturbed environment, and manifested behavioral problems (aggression, alcoholism, and isolation or running away from home) were found to be more frequently diagnosed with schizophrenia than with any other mental disorder. In some cases, the profiles of these patients also included family problems such as parental loss or alcoholism.CONCLUSIONS: Significant association between learning and other disorders in adult psychiatric patients' developmental profile has been indicated. Furthermore, a specific association between specific learning difficulties, environmental problems, and schizophrenia corroborates the continuity and complexity of these disorders at higher developmental stages. The results from this study can be utilized in the study of mental disorder etiology, raising the possibility that the early treatment of the learning or other disorders could reduce children's likelihood of developing mental disorders in adulthood.

Abstract:Introduction: Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in perceiving and processing verbal and non-verbal information. It is usually accompanied by impaired academic skills leading to school dropout and emotional disturbances, resulting in significant distress and behavioral problems. Methods: A cognitive, academic, and emotional-behavioral assessment was performed at T0 and T1 in children and adolescents with SLD. Participants received psychotherapy and speech therapy treatment from T0 to T1. Results: In SLD, the most compromised cognitive functions were working memory and writing skills. An impact on academic abilities was found. Children and adolescents with SLD experience greater anxiety and depression levels compared to their control peers. Conclusions: SLD may adversely influence psychological well-being. To counteract such a consequence, more specific cognitive and academic skill-oriented strategies should be taken into consideration.

Abstract:Chromosome pairing at metaphase I was studied in different interspecific hybrids involving Aegilops speltoides (SS) and polyploid wheats Triticum timopheevii (AtAtGG), T. turgidum (AABB), and T. aestivum (AABBDD) to study the relationships between the S, G, and B genomes. Individual chromosomes and their arms were identified by means of C-banding. Pairing between chromosomes of the G and S genomes in T. timopheevii x Ae. speltoides (AtGS) hybrids reached a frequency much higher than pairing between chromosomes of the B and S genomes in T. turgidum x Ae. speltoides (ABS) hybrids and T. aestivum x Ae. speltoides (ABDS) hybrids, and pairing between B- and G-genome chromosomes in T. turgidum x T. timopheevii (AAtBG) hybrids or T. aestivum x T. timopheevii (AAtBGD) hybrids. These results support a higher degree of closeness of the G and S genomes to each other than to the B genome. Such relationships are consistent with independent origins of tetraploid wheats T. turgidum and T. timopheevii and with a more recent formation of the timopheevi lineage.

Abstract:Many studies have examined post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depressive symptoms in adolescents under the background of school bullying, but not their comorbidities and changes over time. This study used random intercept latent transition analysis (RI-LTA) to examine the transitions in comorbid patterns of PTSD and depressive symptoms among 815 adolescents (45.0% boys; M age-baseline = 13.69, SD = 1.60), who reported their symptoms in a 3-year longitudinal study. Three comorbid patterns were found: low symptoms, predominantly PTSD symptoms, and symptoms of comorbidity. Among these patterns, five trends were found through 3 years: stable low symptoms, stable PTSD symptoms, improving symptoms, worsening symptoms, and an inverted-U pattern. Age, time that parents spend with their child, being an only child, family income and experiencing relational bullying were predictors of these transitions. These suggest that patterns of PTSD and depressive symptoms are heterogeneous and may change over time since trauma events. Developing targeted interventions based on underlying factors through distinct patterns and transitions may help us better optimize and utilize intervention resources to alleviate symptoms from bullying victims.
Alterations in fear learning as a mechanism linking childhood exposure to violence with PTSD symptoms: a longitudinal study

Abstract:Background: Fear learning is a core component of conceptual models of how adverse experiences may influence psychopathology. Specifically, existing theories posit that childhood experiences involving childhood trauma are associated with altered fear learning processes, while experiences involving deprivation are not. Several studies have found altered fear acquisition in youth exposed to trauma, but not deprivation, although the specific patterns have varied across studies. The present study utilizes a longitudinal sample of children with variability in adversity experiences to examine associations among childhood trauma, fear learning, and psychopathology in youth. Methods: The sample includes 170 youths aged 10-13 years (M = 11.56, s.d. = 0.47, 48.24% female). Children completed a fear conditioning task while skin conductance responses (SCR) were obtained, which included both acquisition and extinction. Childhood trauma and deprivation severity were measured using both parent and youth report. Symptoms of anxiety, externalizing problems, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were assessed at baseline and again two-years later. Results: Greater trauma-related experiences were associated with greater SCR to the threat cue (CS+) relative to the safety cue (CS-) in early fear acquisition, controlling for deprivation, age, and sex. Deprivation was unrelated to fear learning. Greater SCR to the threat cue during early acquisition was associated with increased PTSD symptoms over time controlling for baseline symptoms and mediated the relationship between trauma and prospective changes in PTSD symptoms. Conclusions: Childhood trauma is associated with altered fear learning in youth, which may be one mechanism linking exposure to violence with the emergence of PTSD symptoms in adolescence.
Strengths and Difficulties among Adolescent with and without Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Abstract:Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) have become a major concern in modern societies. It is essential to detect their emotional, behavioral and social consequences as early as childhood. The aim of this study is to examine a set of strengths and difficulties and compare them between students with and without SLD. Participants in this study were adolescents aged 11-18 years from Budapest and villages of its Metropolitan area (Hungary) (N = 276, mean age = 13.6 years, SD = 1.8, 54.7% boys). Due to multistage sampling, a nearly equal number of students had SLD or not. In addition to sociodemographics, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Satisfaction With Life Scale and the Proactive Coping Inventory were included in the survey, and t-test, correlation and logistic regression analysis were applied in statistical analyses. Our findings suggest that in early adolescence (ages 11-14 years), conduct and peer problems, in late adolescence (ages 15-18 years), emotional problems, highlighted SLD. In terms of strengths, prosocial behavior in children with SLD may compensate difficulties, especially at a younger age. Students from lower SES families and those having parents with a lower educational level are more likely to have a diagnosis of SLD. Teachers and special educators should take care of improving the adolescents' prosociality, social and coping skills and listening to emotional, conduct and peer problems in those with SLD.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES The goal of this study was to investigate whether microRNA-155 might be a potential therapeutic target for Behçet's disease (BD). METHODS Expression levels of miR-155 were quantified using TaqMan microRNA assays in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and in isolated CD4+ T cells from BD patients and healthy controls. To identify targets of miR-155, luciferase reporter assays and western blotting were performed. The effect of miR-155 on Th17 polarisation was analysed in patients with active BD by using flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS The expression of miR-155 and IL-17 was significantly increased in CD4+ T cells of patients with active BD. A luciferase reporter assay and western blot showed that Ets-1 expression was reduced by miR-155 mimics. Furthermore, the expression of Ets-1 was significantly decreased in patients with active BD compared to healthy controls. More importantly, repression of miR-155 in CD4+ T cells from active BD patients increased Ets-1 expression and reduced the number of IL- 17-expressing T cells and overall IL-17 production. CONCLUSIONS MiR-155 regulates the Th17 immune response by targeting Ets-1. Suppression of miR-155 reduced the amount of pathogenic IL-17-expressing T cells and may be a potential therapeutic strategy for BD.

Abstract:This article reviews the prevalence of stress and explores resilience factors in children and adolescents with specific learning disabilities (SLDs). We show that the increased stress and emotional challenges faced by this group are likely due to societal pressures and stigma. Recent findings on neuroendocrine changes in this population are discussed, suggesting a predisposition to psychiatric disorders. This review advocates for a societal shift toward the neurodiversity paradigm, which recognizes SLDs as natural variations in brain function, emphasizing individual strengths and promoting a more inclusive approach that values cognitive diversity. Such advocacy is likely important to combat stress and stigma in those with SLDs. This article also reviews recent work identifying resilience-promoting factors, such as perception of self and peer/teacher relationships, for enhancing emotional well-being and mental health for children and adolescents with SLDs.

Abstract:Abstract This study explores the relationship between emotion regulation and psychosocial difficulties among adolescents with a specific learning disorder (SLD) and examines the role of the sense of school belonging in this connection. Participants were 249 seventh- and eighth-grade students diagnosed with SLD (146 boys, 103 girls) from 11 urban public schools. The analysis indicated that the total effect of students’ emotion regulation on the degree of psychosocial difficulties was significant: the better the students’ ability to regulate emotions, the lower their degree of psychosocial difficulties. This association was significantly mediated by a student’s sense of school belonging. Furthermore, the better the student’s ability to regulate emotions, the higher their sense of school belonging, which was in turn linked with fewer psychosocial difficulties. The article concludes with a discussion of theoretical and applied implications of the findings.

Abstract:A growing body of literature indicates that children with Specific Learning Disorder (SpLD) are at risk of internalising and externalising problems. Instead, less is known about the factors that may influence this symptomatology. For instance, a few studies investigated the extent to which impaired school well-being could predict internalising and externalising symptomatology. This study aimed first to examine school well-being in SpLD children in a multi-dimensional perspective, from the point of view of the children and their mothers; second, the study analysed relationships between school well-being problems and psychopathological symptoms. Seventy-two children aged 8–10 years, 20 with SpLD and 52 typically developing (TD) children, and their mothers completed the Questionnaire on School Well-being. The mothers also filled in the Child Behaviour Checklist. Compared with TD group, mothers of children with SpLD reported on QBS lower children's learning performances and worse family–teacher relationships. Closer relationships between QBS scores, i.e. struggles with learning and emotional problems at school, and internalising/externalising symptoms were found in SpLD group. These findings suggest that school well-being problems could negatively influence the psychological development of children with SpLD and highlight the importance of supportive school environment to improve school well-being and overall psychological health of these children.

Abstract:The aim was to investigate trait social anxiety and social evaluative stress in autistic children and adolescents and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD). This was done by evaluating behavioral, subjective, and autonomic responses to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Study 1 included 280 children and adolescents: 60 autistic without intellectual disability (ID), 70 SLD, and 150 non-diagnosed (ND) peers. Study 2 involved 55 participants: 15 autistic without ID, 15 SLD, and 20 ND. The sample was predominantly male. In Study 1, behavioral (quality of public speech) and subjective (valence, arousal, perceived competence, and worries) aspects of social stress were examined. Study 2 expands upon the first study, as physiological responses to social stress were also measured. Trait social anxiety was investigated using both parents' and children's reports in the two studies. Parents of autistic participants and with SLD reported higher trait social anxiety in their children than the parents of ND. No differences emerged from the participants' self-reports, though those autistic and with SLD were assigned lower scores in the public speech quality than ND. Autistic children and adolescents reported lower arousal and higher perceived competence than ND, while those with SLD reported a lower perception of competence. Autistic participants had a decreased cardiac reactivity across the TSST when compared to SLD and ND. Our findings show unique patterns of responses within each group, confirming that the combined investigation of trait anxiety and social stress responses could be a valuable insight in research and clinical practice.

16 Learning-Related Challenges and their Association with Special Education Receipt and Vocational Outcomes in Autistic Adults

Abstract:Objective: Relative to their typically developing peers, autistic individuals experience greater difficulties in domains of functioning that are relevant to learning and adult outcomes, such as sensory sensitivities, anxiety, and social. However, little is known about how difficulties in these domains relate to the receipt of special education services as well as adult outcomes, such as vocational achievement. The current study sought to fill this gap by examining if difficulties in various learning-related domains as ascertained via the Learning Needs Screening Tool (LNST) were associated with historical special education receipt and vocational status. Participants and Methods: 400 autistic adults, recruited via the Simons Powering Autism Research (SPARK) participant registry Research Match service, participated in this study (40.5% male, mean age=28.9 years). All participants completed the LNST, which collects responses to 13 core questions about learning (such as challenges with memorization, note taking, spelling and identifying arithmetic signs), as well as 7 additional questions with checkbox and free response options, and yields a total score from 0-30. LNST item 14 and its response options (1-9) capture suspected causes of learning difficulties (e.g., 'too much noise or activity bothers me,' 'I get nervous taking tests'). These individual questions as well as the total of endorsed learning related challenges were then evaluated in relation to historical special education receipt (“yes” vs. “no”) and vocational outcomes (“yes” vs. “no” engaging in 10+ hours of postsecondary education or employment without supports), as assessed via the Taylor Vocational Index. Results: Logistic regression was utilized to predict the dependent variables of interest. Models included sex assigned at birth and age in the first step as covariates. Then either the total of learning related challenges endorsed or the 9 individual learning-related challenges from the LNST were included as independent variables of interest. For historical special education receipt, two items - “It’s hard for me to work by myself” (B = .78, p<.05) and “I get nervous taking tests” (B = .49, p<.05) were positively associated with a history of special education services. For vocational outcomes, the total learning related challenges (B = -.25, p<.001) as well as endorsement of one item -“It’s hard for me to work by myself” (B = -.88, p=<.05) were associated with poorer vocational outcomes. Conclusions: These findings shed light on the possible learning-related challenges that are experienced by autistic adults. Further examination of the role these learning related challenges play in the receipt of special education and on vocational outcomes is warranted. In particular, difficulties with independence in work was related to both special education receipt and poorer vocational outcomes, indicating that it may be a fruitful area of focus for vocational training programs.

Abstract:Objective Nearly 65% of youth experience trauma, and up to one-third of youth with trauma exposure face profound mental health sequelae. There remains a need to elucidate factors that contribute to psychopathology following trauma exposure and optimize interventions for youth who do not benefit sufficiently from existing treatments. Here, we probe safety signal learning (SSL), which is a mechanism of fear reduction that leverages learned safety to inhibit fear in the presence of threat-associated stimuli and has been shown to attenuate fear via a hippocampal-cingulate –– specifically, dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC)––pathway. Method The present study used behavioral and task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging data to examine age-related associations between interpersonal trauma exposure and the behavioral and neural correlates (i.e., activation and functional connectivity) of SSL in a group of 102 youth (ages 9-19; 46 female, 56 male) with (n=52) and without (n=50) interpersonal trauma exposure. Primary analyses examined anterior hippocampal activation and anterior hippocampus-dACC functional connectivity. Exploratory analyses examined centromedial (CMA) and laterobasal (LBA) amygdala activation and anterior hippocampal, CMA, and LBA functional connectivity with additional anterior cingulate subregions (i.e., subgenual anterior cingulate cortex [sgACC] and rostral anterior cingulate cortex [rosACC]). Results Both youth with and without interpersonal trauma exposure successfully learned conditioned safety, which was determined using self-report of contingency awareness. Youth with interpersonal trauma exposure–relative to youth in the comparison group–exhibited age-specific patterns of lower hippocampal activation (F(2,96)=3.75, p FDR =.049, η p 2 =.072), and, in exploratory analyses, showed heightened centromedial amygdala activation ( F (1,96)=5.37, p FDR =.046, η p 2 =.053) and an age-related decrease in hippocampal-sgACC functional connectivity during SSL (F(1,94)=10.68, p FDR =.015, η p 2 =.102). We also show that hippocampal-sgACC functional connectivity mediated the association between interpersonal trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms in an age-specific manner in the overall sample. Conclusion Together, these findings suggest that although age- and trauma-specific differences in the neural correlates of SSL may relate to the development of psychopathology, youth with interpersonal trauma exposure demonstrate successful learning of conditioned safety over time.

Abstract:Specific learning disabilities (SLDs) are highly relevant to the science and practice of psychology, both historically and currently, exemplifying the integration of interdisciplinary approaches to human conditions. They can be manifested as primary conditions-as difficulties in acquiring specific academic skills-or as secondary conditions, comorbid to other developmental disorders such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. In this synthesis of historical and contemporary trends in research and practice, we mark the 50th anniversary of the recognition of SLDs as a disability in the United States. Specifically, we address the manifestations, occurrence, identification, comorbidity, etiology, and treatment of SLDs, emphasizing the integration of information from the interdisciplinary fields of psychology, education, psychiatry, genetics, and cognitive neuroscience. SLDs, exemplified here by specific word reading, reading comprehension, mathematics, and written expression disabilities, represent spectrum disorders, each occurring in approximately 5% to 15% of the school-aged population. In addition to risk for academic deficiencies and related functional social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties, those with SLDs often have poorer long-term social and vocational outcomes. Given the high rate of occurrence of SLDs and their lifelong negative impact on functioning if not treated, it is important to establish and maintain effective prevention, surveillance, and treatment systems involving professionals from various disciplines trained to minimize the risk and maximize the protective factors for SLDs. Abstract:Disproportionate reactions to unexpected stimuli in the environment are a cardinal symptom of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Here, we test whether these heightened responses are associated with disruptions in distinct components of reinforcement learning. Specifically, using functional neuroimaging, a loss-learning task, and a computational model-based approach, we assessed the mechanistic hypothesis that overreactions to stimuli in PTSD arise from anomalous gating of attention during learning (i.e., associability). Behavioral choices of combat-deployed veterans with and without PTSD were fit to a reinforcement learning model, generating trial-by-trial prediction errors (signaling unexpected outcomes) and associability values (signaling attention allocation to the unexpected outcomes). Neural substrates of associability value and behavioral parameter estimates of associability updating, but not prediction error, increased with PTSD during loss learning. Moreover, the interaction of PTSD severity with neural markers of associability value predicted behavioral choices. These results indicate that increased attention-based learning may underlie aspects of PTSD and suggest potential neuromechanistic treatment targets.

Abstract:Oral administration of 2.5 ml/kg CCl4 in peanut oil to rats produced elevated free epinephrine and norepinephrine levels in plasma and urine. The elevated urinary free catecholamine levels were probably the result of increased secretion, rather than decreased metabolism or tissue depletion. There was less excretion of catecholamines after CCl4 during the summer months. Cord section, trimethidinium, guanethidine and β-TM-10 reduced the elevated norepinephrine excretion of CCl4-treated animals; the elevated epinephrine excretion was prevented by cord section, adrenalectomy and trimethidinium. Thyroxin, which exacerbated the CCl4 toxicity and mitochondrial damage, markedly potentiated epinephrine excretion following CCl4. The finding of elevated urinary catecholamine levels following CCl4 administration and the further demonstration that this elevation was the result of increased secretion is evidence that CCl4 does stimulate the sympathetic nervous system. That agents which prevent the CCl4-induced increase in catecholamine excretion have been shown to prevent the CCl4-induced hepatic necrosis, lipid accumulation and mitochondrial enzyme changes lends strong support to the hypothesis that hepatic damage is at least in part a consequence of stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system.
Understanding posttraumatic stress trajectories in adolescent females: A strength-based machine learning approach examining risk and protective factors including online behaviors

Abstract:Heterogeneity in the course of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) following a major life trauma such as childhood sexual abuse (CSA) can be attributed to numerous contextual factors, psychosocial risk, and family/peer support. The present study investigates a comprehensive set of baseline psychosocial risk and protective factors including online behaviors predicting empirically derived PTSS trajectories over time. Females aged 12-16 years (N = 440); 156 with substantiated CSA; 284 matched comparisons with various self-reported potentially traumatic events (PTEs) were assessed at baseline and then annually for 2 subsequent years. Latent growth mixture modeling (LGMM) was used to derive PTSS trajectories, and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) logistic regression was used to investigate psychosocial predictors including online behaviors of trajectories. LGMM revealed four PTSS trajectories: resilient (52.1%), emerging (9.3%), recovering (19.3%), and chronic (19.4%). Of the 23 predictors considered, nine were retained in the LASSO model discriminating resilient versus chronic trajectories including the absence of CSA and other PTEs, low incidences of exposure to sexual content online, minority ethnicity status, and the presence of additional psychosocial protective factors. Results provide insights into possible intervention targets to promote resilience in adolescence following PTEs.

Abstract:Objective: Although most children with ADHD experience school problems, only a subset of these youth meet psychometric criteria for learning disabilities (LD) in reading or mathematics. Considering the well-documented adverse impact of both ADHD and LD on school performance, the presence of both conditions in a given child may herald a particularly poor educational outcome for affected youth. This issue has not been adequately addressed in previous follow-up studies of ADHD. Design: In a four-year follow-up study of ADHD children, the educational, psychiatric, and psychosocial outcomes in ADHD youth with and without LD were examined. Results: Among children with ADHD, LD at baseline selectively predicted poorer educational functioning at follow-up, as manifested by higher rates of grade retention, in-school tutoring, and placement in special classes. In contrast, psychiatric comorbidity and psychosocial outcomes were comparable in ADHD youth with and without LD. Conclusions: Results suggest that LD predicts impaired academic outcomes among ADHD children. It does not, however, predict impaired social or psychiatric outcomes. These results stress the importance of including an evaluation of LD in the assessment of ADHD youth.

Abstract:Background: Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are known to be at increased risk of exposure to traumas such as maltreatment and abuse, however less is known about possible susceptibility towards the development of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and associated risk factors. Aims: This study investigated the rates of trauma exposure and PTSD, and the role of cumulative trauma exposure and memory as risk factors for PTSD in adults who self-reported having received an ASD diagnosis, compared to a typically developing (TD) comparison group. Methods: Questionnaires assessing self-reported frequency of trauma exposure (LEC), PTSD symptomology (PCL-S) and memory (EMQ- R and BRIEF-A) were completed online by 38 ASD adults and 44 TD adults. Results: Rates of trauma exposure and PTSD symptomatology were significantly higher in the ASD group, compared to the TD group, with deficits in working memory and everyday memory mediating this association. Interestingly, a cumulative effect of trauma exposure on PTSD symptom severity was only found in the ASD group. Conclusions: High rates of trauma and probable PTSD in ASD adults highlight the importance of routine screening. Cumulative trauma exposure and memory deficits may act to increase risk of PTSD in ASD; longitudinal research is called for.

Abstract:Previous studies have established the relationship between behavioral problems and specific learning disorders (SLD); however, the exact mechanism by which behavioral disorders impact SLD remains unclear. This longitudinal study used the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) to investigate how parents' judgment of children's behavioral problems changed from kindergarten to fifth grade in children diagnosed with or without specific learning disorders in reading and spelling (SLDrs) (N = 196). Growth component model analyses showed differential development of behavior problems between children with and without SLDrs. The groups did not differ before school entrance in externalizing behavior, internalizing behavior or any sub-scale of the CBCL. Parents reported their children with SLDrs as having higher overall levels of behavioral problems after school entrance, especially in first and fourth grade. Comorbid ADHD appears to be the explanatory factor of differential problem behavior ratings between children with and without SLDrs.
