Abstract:Abstract Waxy rice is widely used in many ancient buildings due to their good performance in some fields (such as caking property, impermeability, weatherability, etc.). In the humid environment of South China, the excavation of ancient sites is faced with many problems, especially for sites with deep burial depth, it is necessary to set support and minimize the impact on the site environment. In the excavation project of Jingtoushan site, located in the town of Sanqi, Yuyao, Zhejiang Province, China, the loess between the steel structures supports needs to be reinforced. Waxy rice, as a traditional Chinese building additive, was used as the reinforcement of this project. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore the best proportion of waxy rice powder mixed with loess. In this paper, the standard columns with different proportion of waxy rice powder were made, and the uniaxial compression tests were carried out after curing for 0~180 days in standard humid environment (25°C and 60% humidity). It was found that the soil columns with 2% waxy rice powder had the best improvement effect. Due to the weak acidity of groundwater in South China, loess specimens mixed with 0%, 1%, 2%, 3% waxy rice powder was soaked in acetic acid solutions of 0mol/L, 0.5mol/L, 1mol/L and 2mol/L respectively, and the consolidation fast shear test, SEM test and mercury injection test were completed. The results show that the overall structure of the specimen is improved when the concentration of acetic acid is low. Acetic acid dissolves the calcium carbonate in the loess-waxy rice structure, quickly and effectively destroys the poor pore structure in the loess, and makes the waxy rice powder filled as the binder between the soil particles, forming a new structure. The improved structure has strong shear strength. When the concentration of acetic acid is high, the cementitious substance between the soil particles dissolves and the pore content increases. The waxy rice powder is not enough to fill the extra pores. Therefore, it is suggested that the proportion of waxy rice powder should be more than 2% in the areas with strong acidity. The study provides a useful reference for the excavation and follow-up protection of earthen sites in the acid environment of South China.
Study on Mechanical Properties of Permeable Polymer Treated Loess

Abstract:The reinforcement and durability of loess are of great importance for road performance. In this study, a self-designed grouting system and newly permeable polymers were adopted to investigate the mechanical properties and durability of solidified loess (SL), considering different dry densities and water contents. The unconfined compression test and piezocone penetration (CPTU) test were used to examine the mechanical properties. The mechanism of the loess solidified by permeable polymer was analyzed from the micro-level by SEM, MIP, and XRD tests. The test results show that the effect of polymer grouting is obvious, the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the SL after grouting is as high as 3.05–5.42 MPa; it is 11.83–20.99 times that of unsolidified loess (UL). The UCS of the SL after grouting is inversely proportional to the dry densities and water contents. After 56 days of immersion, the SL still shows a high compressive strength. The additional erosion of the SL was not caused by the salt solution; the durability is significantly better than that of cement mixing soil. The sensitivity of various factors on the UCS of the SL are service environment > water content > dry density. The SEM tests clearly show that the gel formed by the reaction of the polymer with water on the surface of soil particles makes the bond of soil particles tighter. It can be observed from the MIP test that the cumulative mercury of SL was 0.115 mL/g, which was 33.72% of UL (0.341 mL/g), and the cumulative mercury of SL after immersion in water and salt solutions was 0.183 mL/g and 0.175 mL/g, which was 53.7% and 51.3% of UL (0.341 mL/g), respectively. The XRD results show that there are no other new mineral components produced after grouting and the spacing between crystalline planes decreases, which proves that permeable polymer grouting makes the soil denser and does not erode the soil particles.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the compressive and microstructural properties of loess before and after treatment with a new permeable polymer. To enhance the compressive properties of loess, specimens were infused with the new polymer, and one-dimensional consolidation tests were performed to assess the compressibility of solidified loess (SL) and unsolidified loess (UL) at different water contents. Additionally, the microstructure and pore morphology of UL and SL were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the Particles (Pores) and Cracks Analysis System (PCAS). Statistical methods were employed to analyze the relationships between microstructural parameters and compression modulus. The experimental results demonstrate a significant improvement in the compressibility of loess when treated with the polymer. The complexity of pore structure and variability in pore size are reduced, leading to a more uniform pore distribution. Moreover, all microstructural parameters exhibit a strong correlation with the compression modulus. The results pertaining to the compressive and microstructural properties of loess reinforced with permeable polymer grouting can provide insights into the variations in the curing effect, serving as a theoretical foundation for the application of permeable polymer in loess treatment.

Mechanical characterization and water stability of loess improved by bio-based materials: An eco-friendly approach

Abstract:Loess exhibits poor engineering properties, such as low strength and poor water stability. Conventional materials used for improving loess, such as cement and lime, result in environmental pollution issues throughout their production and application processes. To assess the efficacy of bio-based materials, including calcium alginate (CA), xanthan gum (XA), cotton fibers (CO) and flax fibers (FA) in the treatment of loess, the improved soil's strength, disintegration, and water resistance were examined. Subsequently, an optimal amendment approach was determined, and dry-wet cycle tests and microscopic observation were performed. The results show that 1.0 % calcium alginate can effectively enhance the strength of loess, significantly improving its resistance to disintegration with almost no observable disintegration; permeability is significantly reduced, and water repellency is enhanced. 2.0 % xanthan can improve the strength and disintegration resistance of loess, but the improvement in strength is lower than that of calcium alginate. Additionally, the improved soil with XA experiences a flocculent disintegration in static water, which cannot maintain the soil structure. Cotton fibers and flax fibers can enhance both compressive and tensile strength of the soil. The content of 0.45 % flax fibers is considered the optimal choice as it has no effect on water stability. Combining the above results, the combination of 1.0 % CA and 0.45 % FA has been selected to improve the loess, which effectively improves the comprehensive mechanical properties and water stability of the composite improved soil. The decrease in strength and mass loss rate are significantly reduced after dry-wet cycle tests. Microscopic tests show that calcium alginate connects soil particles by Ca<sup>2+</sup> ionic bridges, which allows the cementing materials to fill the loess pores and exert the role of agglomeration and coagulation to enhance the integrity of the loess. This study shows that the bio-based material with calcium alginate as the main body can effectively improve the mechanical strength and water stability of the loess.

Abstract:The soil of the Loess Plateau is highly susceptible to erosion due to its distinct loess structure with poor water stability and disintegrates easily. Previous research has focused on improving soil strength without considering stability and ecological performance. Comprehensive improvements may be achieved by cross-linked polymers (CLPs), but their effect on loess structure remains unclear. In the present study, we investigate CLPs as a new organic soil stabilizer to improve soil aggregate stability. To determine the effect of CLPs on the stabilization of loess, a series of indoor tests was conducted to assess unconfined compressive strength, water stability, soil-water characteristics, and plant height. The stabilization mechanism was analyzed by comparing the microstructure, mineral composition, and features of functional groups of loess before and after treatment. The results showed that, compared with untreated loess, the unconfined compressive strength and anti-disintegration property of treated loess were significantly increased. The water retention capacity was improved, and the germination rate and growth of plants were promoted. Microscopic analysis showed that the use of CLPs did form new minerals in the loess or change the functional groups, rather, CLPs improved the microstructure, reduced the total volume of pores, and increased the degree of soil compaction. Field tests showed that the erosion of loess hillsides was effectively controlled by CLPs. Under the same erosive conditions, the slope surface treated with CLPs was more intact than the untreated slope surface. Our findings provide new strategies regarding the application of CLPs as soil stabilizers to control loess erosion and promote vegetation restoration.

Abstract:Natural loess has poor engineering properties because of its own loose and porous nature. To meet the needs of engineering construction, this study attempted to add silica micro powder mixed with cement into loess to improve its mechanical properties. The direct shear test, triaxial shear test, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) test were used to evaluate the strength characteristics and micropore structure modifications of silica micro powder and cement stabilized loess. The results showed that the addition of silica micro powder alone increased the shear strength of loess, while when silica micro powder was mixed with cement, the improvement in strength increased significantly. 3% cement with 10% silica micro powder is the optimum content to stabilize loess. The shear strength of the stabilized loess for 28 days under 200 kPa confining pressure was 2255 kPa, which was 34.9% higher than that of plain loess. Under the same cement content, the cohesion of loess increased with the increase of silica micro powder content, and the internal friction angle increased first and then decreased. The increase in curing age and the decrease in water content were positively correlated with shear strength, and the prediction formula of shear strength parameters of stabilized loess is established. In the SEM test, through qualitative analysis, it is found that the unreacted silica powder mainly physically filled the pores of loess, while the reacted silica micro powder and cement mainly combine with hydration products, which together enhanced the compactness of loess. From the quantitative analysis, it can be seen that with the addition of silica micro powder and cement, the macropores and mesopores between loess particles are transformed into small pores and micropores, the orientation of pores is enhanced, and the loess structure becomes more compact, which further revealed the mechanism of silica micro powder combined with cement to stabilize loess. The results of this study demonstrate that silica micro powder mixed with cement can effectively improve the mechanical properties of natural loess, providing a promising approach for reinforcing loess in engineering applications.

Abstract:Loess has the characteristics of loose, large pore ratio, and strong water sensitivity. Once it encounters water, its structure is damaged easily and its strength is degraded, causing a degree of subgrade settlement. The water sensitivity of loess can be evaluated by permeability and disintegration tests. This study analyzes the effects of guar gum content, basalt fiber content, and basalt fiber length on the permeability and disintegration characteristics of solidified loess. The microstructure of loess was studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) testing, revealing the synergistic solidification mechanism of guar gum and basalt fibers. A permeability model was established through regression analysis with guar gum content, confining pressure, basalt fiber content, and length. The research results indicate that the addition of guar gum reduces the permeability of solidified loess, the addition of fiber improves the overall strength, and the addition of guar gum and basalt fiber improves the disintegration resistance. When the guar gum content is 1.00%, the permeability coefficient and disintegration rate of solidified soil are reduced by 50.50% and 94.10%, respectively. When the guar gum content is 1.00%, the basalt fiber length is 12 mm, and the fiber content is 1.00%, the permeability of the solidified soil decreases by 31.9%, and the disintegration rate is 4.80%. The permeability model has a good fitting effect and is suitable for predicting the permeability of loess reinforced with guar gum and basalt fiber composite. This research is of vital theoretical worth and great scientific significance for guidelines on practicing loess solidification engineering.

Abstract:The Loess Plateau is highly susceptible to gully headward erosion, highlighting the urgent need for soil stabilization. In this study, a series of physical and mechanical properties, water physical properties and microstructure tests were carried out to explore the loess improvement for potential control of headward erosion in loess gullies. Experimental results reveal that the addition of the Consolid System to loess soil leads to an increase in the plastic limit and liquid limit of the soil, while the soil retains its characteristics as a type of low plasticity soil. The dry density of the stabilized loess soil decreases, while the unconfined compressive strength increases. Regarding the water-physical properties, the swelling and shrinkage properties of modified loess soil were significantly improved while the permeability coefficient slightly decrease. Furthermore, the surface energy decreased, resulting in increased water repellency, while the pore volume remains relatively unchanged. A recommended minimum mixing ratio of the Consolid System is 1.5% to resist water erosion. In conclusion, the implementation of the Consolid System not only enhances the strength of loess soil and its water repellency, but also preserves the advantageous water drainage characteristics inherent to loess soil. Consequently, loess soil stabilized by the Consolid System holds promising potential for applications in areas covered with loess soil.

Abstract:To improve the problem of collapsibility of loess, adding industrial materials such as cement is common engineering treatment, but this seriously damages the reclamation performance of soil. Calcium lignosulfonate (CLS) from paper plant waste fluids is a natural bio-based polymer with good application prospects as a soil improver. In this paper, the collapsibility and mechanical properties of CLS improved loess were investigated using a collapsibility test, gray correlation analysis, and an unconfined compressive strength test (UCS). In addition, the strengthening mechanism of CLS-improved loess was also explored based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microstructure parameters, and X-ray diffraction. The collapsibility coefficient decreased rapidly after CLS was admixed, and the single and double-oedometer methods showed the same change trend. The order of grey correlation degree of collapsibility on each index from large to small was: moisture content, pore ratio, dry density, and CLS content. The dosage of CLS greatly influenced the mechanical properties and collapsibility of stabilized loess. The optimum amount of CLS for Xi'an loess was 3%, at which the collapsibility coefficient was reduced by more than 95%, and the 28 d UCS increased by 180.01%. From the microstructure and mineral composition analysis perspective, CLS plays a role in filling pores and linking soil particles. After the protonation and ion exchange effect of CLS, the grain size and double electric layer thickness of mineral composition were reduced, and the structural compactness was increased. These research results are of great scientific significance for the ecological modification of soils.

Abstract:Loess is the most common building material in Northwest China. However, because of its loose accumulation, it is always unable to satisfy the requirements of actual engineering. In this paper, the effect of randomly distributed polypropylene fiber length (PPL), polypropylene fiber content (PPC), bentonite (B), and cement (C) on unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and permeability coefficient were investigated, and the optimum conditions were determined. The Taguchi method was applied to the experiments to choose the optimum conditions as 6-mm PPL (1), 0.3% PPC (2), 3% B (2), and 8% C (3), which abbreviated as PPBC loess. Meanwhile, by comparing the PPBC loess with lime–loess; it was found that the PPBC loess was significantly better than the lime–loess sample in terms of both UCS and permeability. The microstructure of PPBC loess and lime–loess was investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). It was exhibited that the reinforcement of lime–loess was mainly realized by producing C–S–H gels through chemical reactions, and the properties of the PPBC loess were improved by the physical reinforcement of polypropylene fibers and the chemical effects of cement. Moreover, according to the results of FTIR and NMR that the improvement of the mechanical properties of PPBC loess was caused by the increase of the adsorption band intensity and the decrease of pores, the mechanical properties of lime–loess with different contents were mainly affected by the decrease of pores.

Abstract:With poor mechanical properties and engineering characteristics, loess soils alone cannot meet the requirements of high-speed railway subgrade and large-sized building foundations based on shear strength and bearing capacity. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the mechanical properties of loess. In soil reinforcement, encouraging outcomes have been achieved by using fibers as reinforcement material for its relatively low costs and the low environment impact results from this material. To investigate the mechanical properties and the reinforcement mechanism of fiber-reinforced loess, ring shear tests were performed on loess samples with varying polypropylene fiber contents (0%, 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%, and 1%) and moisture contents (12%, 14%, 16%, 18%, and 20%). Furthermore, the macroscopic structure and microscopic images of the shear plane of reinforced specimens were analyzed as well. The test results showed that firstly polypropylene fibers significantly improved the peak strength and the residual strength of loess, and the optimal fiber content and the optimal moisture content were found to be 0.5% and 16%, respectively. The theoretical relationships between the fiber content Fc, the moisture content Mc, the peak strength τ, and the residual strength τr of reinforced loess were quantitatively determined. In addition, the fiber reinforcement mechanism was revealed based on the macroscopic shear plane of fiber-reinforced loess and SEM microscopic images of the shear plane.

An Eco-Friendly Polymer Composite Fertilizer for Soil Fixation, Slope Stability, and Erosion Control

Abstract:In the Loess Plateau region, the poor structure and properties of loess slopes will cause many types of geological disasters such as landslides, mudflow, land collapse, soil erosion, and ground cracking. In this paper, an eco-friendly polymer composite fertilizer (PCF) based on corn straw wastes (CS) and geopolymer synthesized from loess was studied. The characterization by FT-IR of the PCF confirmed that graft copolymer is formed, while morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy showed that geopolymer and urea were embedded in the polymer porous network. The effects of PCF contents on the compressive strength of loess were investigated. The PCF was characterized in terms of surface curing test, temperature and freeze-thaw aging property, water and wind erosion resistance, and remediation soil acidity and alkalinity property, which indicates that PCF can improve loess slope fixation and stability by physical and chemical effects. Moreover, the loess slope planting experiment showed that PCF can significantly increase the germination rate of vegetation from 31% to 68% and promote the survival rate of slope vegetation from 45.2% to 67.7% to enhance biological protection for loess slopes. The PCF meets the demands of building and roadbed slope protection and water-soil conservation in arid and semi-arid regions, which opens a new application field for multifunctional polymer composite fertilizers with low cost and environmental remediation.
Improving Hydro-Mechanical Behavior of Loess by a Bio-Strategy

Abstract:Loess is widely distributed all over the world, covering about 10% of the land surface on earth. China is one of the countries with the most serious loess soil erosion in the world, especially the loess plateau. This is mainly related to the poor water stability and mechanical properties of the loess. A new coupling method of bio-cementation (Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation: MICP) and sand additive to improve the hydro-mechanical behavior of loess was proposed. The feasibility, coupling improvement mechanism and the effects of sand content, bio-cement treatment cycle and cementation solution (CS) concentration were investigated through a series of tests. The results indicated that the proposed method was effective to improve the water stability and structure strength of loess. The coupling improvement performance were positively related to the sand content. When the sand content was 40%, compared to bio-cement treatment, the coupling treatment was 9 times deeper in treatment depth, 3.5 times stronger in peak structure strength, and the sum slaking rate was less than half. The coupling improvement mechanism can be attributed to the form of the double layers including hard crust and cemented layer. With the addition of sand, the thickness, structure strength and water stability of the double layers increased. The main reason is that there were more interfacial voids between sand particles and loess particles, increasing the permeability of loess and treatment depth, forming more amount of calcium carbonates. Based on the experimental condition in this study, 1.0 M of CS concentration was the optimal spaying strategy to improve the hydro-mechanical properties of loess.
Mechanical behavior and strengthening mechanism of loess stabilized with xanthan gum and guar gum biopolymers

Abstract:The structural properties of loess are susceptible to change when subjected to external loads and complex environments, leading to various geological disasters. To investigate the mechanical behavior and strengthening mechanism of loess stabilized with biopolymers such as xanthan gum and guar gum, especially for soils with low bearing capacity and stability in engineering applications, we conducted research on the improvement of soil with xanthan gum and guar gum, tests including unconfined compressive strength, disintegration, direct shear, and microstructure tests were conducted. Among the four different dosages of biopolymers (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%) and four different curing ages (1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days), the 2% content of biopolymer and 14 days had the greatest impact on the mechanical properties of loess, Both the compressive and shear strength, as well as the water stability of solidified loess, improve with higher content of xanthan gum and guar gum or prolonged curing time; however, the disintegration rate decreases. Microscopic analysis indicates that the biopolymers effectively fill the gaps between soil particles and attach to the particle surfaces, forming fibrous and reticular structures that improve the interparticle bonding and ultimately increase the strength and water stability of the loess. Xanthan gum and guar gum biopolymers can improve the mechanical properties and water stability of loess, enhance the erosion resistance and improve the water-holding capacity. These outcomes suggest that guar gum and xanthan gum biopolymers have the potential to serve as environmentally sustainable alternatives to conventional soil stabilizers.

Abstract:Due to the special soil-forming environment and process, grain-size distribution, and mineral composition, loess has some poor engineering properties, such as high compressibility, strong water sensitivity, and severe collapsibility. These poor properties lead to frequent occurrence of geological disasters and engineering problems in loess area, so loess is often strengthened in engineering projects. Compared with the traditional methods, the use of stabilizing agents has the advantages of saving time, reducing cost, and increasing efficiency. Therefore, more and more attention has been paid to the research on soil stabilizing agents. In this review, the non-traditional stabilizing agents which can effectively improve the physical and mechanical properties of loess are summarized, including nanomaterials, industrial waste residues, water-hardening inorganic materials, polymer, ion stabilizing agents, and so on. The composition, mechanism, effect, and application of each stabilizing agent are introduced. The mechanisms of strengthening mainly include filling, cementation, ion exchange, and wrapping. One or several of these mechanisms work together when loess is strengthened with any stabilizing agent. Based on this review, it is recognized that it is still meaningful to find eco-friendly and cost-effective loess stabilizing agents, and the focuses are now still on interpretation of the mechanism of each stabilizing agent, as well as determination of the physical and mechanical properties of strengthened loess. Attention should be paid to the degradation in the mechanical properties of strengthened loess and the technical innovation in application, as well as to solving the problems related to practical application of these stabilizing agents.

Abstract:Loess areas, such as the Loess Plateau, are characterized by a fragile ecological environment, high soil erosion, and frequent geological disasters due to the unique hydrological properties of loess (e.g., collapsibility and permeability). Therefore, the loess must be stabilized for use in engineering construction. Traditional stabilizers (lime, cement, and fly ash) cause environmental problems, such as soil salinization and greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of nanosilica on the hydrological properties of loess and the microscopic mechanism. Different nanosilica contents (0.2%, 0.4%, 0.8%, 1%, and 3%) were added to loess sample, and the particle size distribution, Atterberg limits, collapsibility, and soil water characteristics were analyzed. The results revealed the following. The addition of nanosilica changed the particle size distribution, liquid limit, plastic limit, and plasticity index of loess. After the addition of nanosilica with different contents, the loess collapsibility coefficient curve shifted downward, the soil water retention curve shifted upward, and the unsaturated permeability coefficient curve shifted downward. The pores between particles were filled, and the number of large and medium pores and the pore connectivity were lower after the nanosilica addition. The surface of the coarse particles adsorbed more fine particles, and a large number of micro-aggregates or clay aggregates were present in the pores between particles. In conclusion, the environmentally friendly material nanosilica can be used to improve the hydrological properties of loess, which is applicable to alleviating soil erosion and preventing geological disasters on the Loess Plateau.

Abstract:<p>There are an increasing number of mega engineering projects of removing the top of hills to fill in the valley for new land creation in the Loess Plateau of China, which significantly changes the hydrological and geological equilibrium state of the site. The formation of a new hydrological equilibrium state is associated with the water movement in the compacted and intact loess layers. Most disasters occurring in the loess area are related to water. The soil-water retention curve (SWRC) is the key to the implementation of unsaturated soil mechanics in engineering practice and is required to numerically model the movement of water in the soil. In this study, the SWRCs and microstructure of intact and compacted specimens from Lanzhou and Yan'an, two typical cities that have new land creation projects, are investigated. The SWRC is obtained using the filter paper method. The mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques are used to explore the microstructure. The results highlight that the intact loess has a higher air occlusion value (AOV) and a similar slope of SWRC in the transition zone compared with the remolded specimens that compacted at the natural water content. The normalized SWRC (i.e., degree of saturation versus suction/AVO) of the intact specimen is approximately the same as the remolded specimens compacted as the natural water content. The difference in the microstructure between intact and compacted specimens originates from different existing states of the clay particles and further contributes to the variation of the SWRC.</p>

Abstract:Loess is a special kind of sediment, which has the characteristics of loose structure, pore development, and poor cementation. Its mechanical properties are easily affected by water content. In this study, uniaxial compression, Brazilian test, and a double-sided shear test were performed on samples of loess with different water contents. The influence of water content on the mechanical properties of loess has been thoroughly investigated. The results demonstrate a clear linear relationship between the reduction in mechanical characteristics of the loess samples with increasing water content, including compressive strength, deformation modulus, tensile strength, shear strength, cohesion, and internal friction angle. Three failure types will occur for loess samples in the uniaxial compression test as the water content increases: tensile failure, shear failure with bulging, and conical failure with general thickening. In the shear test, the general expression of the shear strength of loess samples is obtained with water content as the independent variable. Finally, a deterioration coefficient K is derived based on the strength parameters of loess samples and can be used to describe the sensitivity to water content. Shear strength is more susceptible to variations in water content than compressive and tensile strength.

Abstract:The effects of moisture and drying shrinkage can lead to uneven settlement, cracking, and other diseases in loess subgrade. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of amide polymer (AP) on the permeability, mechanical properties and crack resistance of loess by orthogonal experiments. The basic properties of AP and the permeability, mechanical properties, and dry–wet variation properties of polymer-modified loess were tested, and a scale model verification and simulation analysis were conducted. In this paper, water migration in subgrade is regulated by improving the water sensitivity of loess. By reducing the variation range of subgrade water content, the stress accumulation in subgrade caused by water is weakened. The results show that the curing time and mechanical properties of AP are directly affected by the oxidant and reducing agent, and the mechanical properties of AP are compatible with the characteristics of loess. AP filled the grain gap and reduced the permeability of loess by 34.05–280.83%. The ductility of polymer-modified loess is significantly increased, and the strain of peak strength is increased by 17.21–126.36%. AP can regulate moisture change, reduce the surface tension between particles, and reduce stress concentration. The strength loss rate was reduced by 19.98–51.21% by enhancing the cracking resistance and weakening the strength loss caused by dry and wet cycling. The increase of upper layer moisture content in the scale model of polymer-modified loess subgrade is reduced by 31.38–36.11%.

Abstract:It is of great importance to study the behavior of loess moisture infiltration based on the loess permeability velocity to prevent geological disasters by loess collapsibility and get effective solutions for the problems of practical engineering. In this study, a custom-made permeation device was used to measure the permeation velocity of collapsible loess before and after water immersion and consolidation. The infiltration characteristics of the undisturbed collapsible loess under different consolidation pressures were discussed, and the influence of the pore characteristics on the permeability velocity was analyzed by the mercury injection test. Meanwhile, the correlations of various types of pores on the permeability velocity were studied by the gray relational entropy method to further reveal the water infiltration mechanism in loess. The results showed that the soil is compressed after consolidation and immersion tests, and the pore volume and pore diameter decreases. However, permeability velocity increases rather than decreases, and the self-weight collapsible state has the most significant permeability velocity. To the collapsible loess, the permeability velocity decreases with the increase of soil pore area. Additionally, small pores show the strongest correlation with permeability velocity. The conclusions of this study have a positive role in guiding foundation treatments and slope stability in collapsible loess areas.
