Abstract:In tunnels, lighting not only affects visual performance, but also non-visual aspects such as drivers' physiological fatigue and mental stress. The non-visual impacts in the interior zone of long tunnels are particularly prominent as drivers are confined for a long time. To alleviate this problem, this study aims to investigate the relationship between drivers' physiological and psychological states and lighting environments. The physiological signal test system (MP150) breathing belt was used to record the changes of heart rate variability (HRV) of drivers when passing through the interior zone of a long tunnel under various lighting conditions. In particular, sympathetic indicators of physiological fatigues and the ratio of low frequency and high frequency (LF/HF) representing mental load were obtained. By analyzing the temporal variation in these two indicators, it is found that environmental luminance perception can more accurately reflect drivers' physiological and psychological states in the long tunnel than road luminance. An increase in road luminance or background luminance will result in a decrease in the mental stress, thereby reducing fatigue sense. Compared to simply increasing road luminance, mental stress of drivers decreased more obviously when the background luminance of long tunnel increased. Based on this, this paper proposed a method to regulate non-visual effect by adding contour markers without increasing light source intensity for the improvement in lighting performance, driving safety, and energy efficiency in long tunnels.

Traffic Safety Improvement of a Highway Tunnel Group Based on Visual Requirements

Abstract:There is a significant difference between driving in a group of tunnels and in an ordinary single highway tunnel. The driver will experiences frequent alternations between light and dark environments when driving in a group of tunnels, which requires the driver to adapt to the changing light conditions. This can make it difficult for the driver to effectively perceive the driving environment, thus, increasing the risk of traffic accidents.This paper presents a case study of the Dayaoshan Tunnel Group, focusing on the special driving environment of the tunnel group section. The paper proposes a line of sight guidance programme that includes reflective rings, guide markers, contour markers, and other facilities. The effectiveness of the programme is evaluated quantitatively using driving simulation and psychology software E-prime. The experiment indicates that the line of sight guidance programme enhances the local luminance of the tunnel, enriches its internal visual environment, and provides drivers with necessary visual cues to improve driving speed stability, reduce reaction time, and enhance driving stability. Consequently, the programme effectively improves the safety level of the tunnel group.
The Influence of Dimming-Induced Luminance Change on Driving Safety in Tunnels

Abstract:Although dimming the light in tunnels brings salient benefits to energy saving, the effects of dimming-induced luminance changes on driving safety have been rarely explored. Adopting the visual performance experiment, the present study investigated the impacts of the dimming-induced luminance change rate (V) on the safety of driver’s perception, judgment, and operation in the threshold zone of the tunnel under different seasons and weather conditions. The results show that the reaction times (RTs), pupil area change rate (vp), and blink frequency (fb), increased with the increase of V. When the luminance before the beginning of dimming (L) was higher, drivers reacted faster and stood a lower level of the mental load and fatigue. Compared with decreasing the luminance through dimming, when increasing the luminance through dimming, the present study found that each of the visual performance indices was about 10% lower, and the changes with V became smaller. Based on the safety thresholds of RT, vp, and fb, the present study obtained the thresholds of V which can meet the safety requirements of driver’s perception, judgment, and operation. Finally, a theoretical model between the thresholds of V and L was developed, and this model will shed light on the control of V in the threshold zone of the tunnel under different seasons and weather conditions.
Influence of luminance and luminance longitudinal uniformity of tunnel lighting on drivers' comprehensive visual performance

Abstract:The present study aimed to investigate the comprehensive influence of the average luminance Lav and luminance longitudinal uniformity U1 on the diver's visual performance under the stage of driving in the tunnel's interior zone during the experiment. Specifically, we collected reaction time, pupil area change rate, and blink frequency from 40 participants through the indoor visual performance experiments. The present study quantitatively characterized the mechanism of the antagonism between luminance intensity and difference, and established the Lav-U1 curve which succeeds in satisfying the safety threshold of the driver's comprehensive visual performance. The results show that the driver's visual performance deteriorated continuously as the test time increases. Increasing the luminance was beneficial for accelerating the reaction speed, but also caused greater stimulation of light and dark changes. The change ratio of reaction speed and the increased amplitude of perceived luminance increased exponentially with the increase of luminance, resulting in an antagonism effect. The visual performance decreased with the increase of average luminance under low uniformity levels, and increased with the increase of average luminance under high uniformity levels. Furthermore, we found that the luminance longitudinal uniformity should match up the luminance in the interior zone, instead of separation under the current specification. Based on our findings, we propose specific recommendations for the luminance longitudinal uniformity under different average luminance levels. For the interior zone of tunnels with an average luminance of 2.5, 4.5, and 6 cd/m2, the luminance longitudinal uniformity should be increased from 0.6 to 0.67, 0.72, and 0.75, respectively. Current findings demonstrate that the implementation of the proposed U1 standard in tunnel lighting design can significantly fasten drivers' reaction time, contribute to a decrease in traffic accidents, and thus improve the safety level of tunnel lighting design in the interior zone of tunnel. These results have significant implications for the design of tunnel lighting.

Abstract:Due to the special characteristics of highway tunnels and vehicles, the interior of the tunnel is required to provide appropriate lighting to ensure the safety of driving vehicles, especially at the entrance section of the tunnel. At present, most of the tunnel entrance lighting control system only considers one single factor, the brightness outside the tunnel. However, in practice, the required lighting brightness in the tunnel is also related to traffic flow, speed, and other factors. Comprehensively utilizing these factors to improve the control strategy is urgently needed. To deal with this problem, this article has designed a multi-source information acquisition system for tunnel lighting based on the Internet of things technology, which combined with fuzzy control theory in order to develop an intelligent control system for LED lighting at the entrance section of the tunnel. The designed system was implemented and long-term tested in a real highway tunnel. The experimental results have shown that the system designed in this article can automatically control the brightness of the lighting inside the tunnel according to the real-time measurements of the brightness outside the tunnel, traffic flow, speed, and so on. Furthermore, the utilizations of the system can minimize the human and power consumption of tunnel lighting while ensuring the safety of tunnel traffic.

Abstract:To achieve a safe and comfortable entrance enhanced lighting environment of tunnels, visual performance experiments under the dynamic and static luminance environments were carried out to investigate the influence of the luminance variation forms and stepped decreasing ratio k' of the tunnel entrance enhanced lighting on the driver's comprehensive visual performance. The application effect was further verified by real vehicle experiments and field luminance measurements. The results of the dynamic and static experiments show that compared with the continuous and smooth decrease of the luminance according to the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), when facing the stepped decrease of luminance, drivers tend to withstand greater visual operation stress and a more tense psychological state. After the stepped decrease of the luminance, the driver's average and instantaneous reaction both slow down, while the amplitude of the slowdown decreases with the increase of k' and increases with the increase of the luminance level. The results of the real vehicle experiments show that increasing k' of Threshold Zones 1 and 2 and Transition Zones 1 and 2 to 0.7, 0.6, 0.5, and 0.5, respectively, can effectively relieve driver's psychological tension and enhance the visual performance. For practical engineering applications, it should be combined with daylight reduction facilities, thus avoiding the increase of energy consumption of the tunnel entrance enhance lighting.

Abstract:Traditional tunnel lighting luminance is obtained from the static observation experiments for an obstacle without consideration of the visual characteristics of human eyes in dynamic state. The visual performances of human eyes during vehicle moving are quite different from those in static condition. Therefore, the influence of vehicle speed on the visible distance of human eyes for an obstacle in tunnel interior zone was experimentally analyzed in this study. Then, the visible distance was compared with the stopping distance specified in the current lighting specifications and the driving safety in tunnel was discussed. The results show that the visible distance for an obstacle under the illumination of LED lamps or vehicle headlights during driving is significantly smaller than that in static condition. In the LED lighting environment, the visible distance for an obstacle on road pavement at the vehicle speeds of 40 km/h, 60 km/h, 80 km/h and 100 km/h compared with that at the speed of 0 decreased by more than 8 %, 16 %, 23 % and 31 %, respectively. The lighting brightness setting in a tunnel should fully consider the impact of driving speed on human visual performance. For the road tunnel with a speed limit of less than 60 km/h, even if only the vehicle headlights are used, the observers can recognize the obstacle at a distance greater than the stopping distance. In view of the huge burden of energy consumption for tunnel lighting at present, it is suggested to apply the combination lighting of LED lamps and vehicle headlights to reduce the lighting energy consumption. For the road tunnel with a design speed limit of more than 80 km/h, the setting of lighting brightness on road surface according to the luminance values specified in the existing lighting specifications cannot guarantee driving safety. Future research should solve the problem that the visible distance of human eyes for an obstacle is less than the demand of stopping distance when driving in tunnel interior zone without increasing the lighting energy consumption.

Abstract:Abstract Based on the research problems of modern tunnel lighting control technology, a tunnel lighting intelligent control system based on ambient luminosity ratio is designed, which is characterized by “car close lights bright, car passing lights dark”, intelligent analysis of system failures, etc. The core technology is LED Tunnel light group brightness automatic adjustment, python data analysis, etc. The design of the core control unit of the system is based on the STC89C52 chip, which uses the numpy module in python to matrix the data in the database through the information collected by the sensor (the light intensity inside and outside the tunnel, the traffic condition of the vehicle in the tunnel, and the working condition of the tunnel lighting equipment, etc.) Level storage and use principal component analysis and other algorithms to perform a large number of calculations and processing on the obtained data. The controller generates a corresponding PWM signal to control the brightness of the LED tunnel light group to solve the problem of excessive lighting or insufficient brightness; through other controls The components exchange information, and the downstream controller performs calculation and processing according to the control instructions sent by the previous stage and the real-time signals detected by the sensors to realize the selective brightness and automatic brightness adjustment of the tunnel section lighting, and finally achieve intelligent control, energy saving and emission reduction the goal of. In addition, we use the seaborn library and matplotlib library in python to visually display the obtained tunnel lighting equipment working condition data, and send the results to the relevant road management department. This will play an important role in greatly improving the efficiency of activities such as equipment maintenance, collecting equipment work information, and optimizing the work structure of road management. To a certain extent, it is conducive to the implementation of specific work of relevant departments.
Analysis of Various Influencing Factors on Highway Tunnel Dimming and Discussion on Dimming Control in Eastern Zhejiang Area

Abstract:The long sequence of tunnel ambient exterior luminance L2o (S) and the traffic data of 6 highway tunnels in the coastal hilly area of Eastern Zhejiang are obtained by using the improved environmental sketch method combined with the loop coil vehicle detector,so as to learn the variation laws of highway tunnel dimming and further solve the problem of dimming control matching with lighting demand of highway tunnel.The results show that:(1) In the Eastern Zhejiang,Area the ratio among peak values of L20 (S) in spring,summer,autumn and winter,are about 0.95,1,0.95,0.85 respectively;and that in sunny,cloudy,overcast and heavy overcast weather conditions are about 1,0.6,0.18,0.11 respectively.(2) L2o(S) is the main factor which affects the lighting demand of the highway tunnel in eastern Zhejiang,and its contribution to energy saving is more than 95％;the influence of traffic on the tunnel lighting is limited.(3) The shorter the tunnel is,the more significant the energy savings is achieved by the dimming control;the stepless dimming of the short tunnels can save energy consumption by more than 50％.

Abstract:Due to the changeable brightness outside the tunnel, the lighting brightness at the exit and entrance of the tunnel needs to be adjusted in time, so as to ensure that the driver can feel the difference of light intensity within the range that the human eye can adapt to when passing through the tunnel. In this paper, a tunnel lighting control strategy based on variable reduction factor is proposed, which can ensure that the lighting around the tunnel is within the range that the human eye can adapt to at any time. Through the field data collection and comparison and experiments, it can be shown that the lighting control method not only can improve the lighting quality in the tunnel, but also have better energy-saving effect and can reduce the cost of manual operation and maintenance.

Abstract:At present, the intelligent control technology of highway tunnel lighting mainly includes two types, graded dimming and stepless dimming, both of which have certain energy-saving effects. Tunnel lighting energy saving and consumption reduction, traffic safety, and the security degree are important indicators used to measure the efficient operation of a tunnel. By adding variable correlated color temperature (CCT) control based on stepless dimming, the adjustment of a lamp's CCT according to changes in the external tunnel environment can be achieved. This not only serves the dual purpose of secondary energy saving and providing comfortable lighting, but also plays a significant role in reducing the reaction time and ensuring tunnel traffic safety. This paper mainly discusses the research achievements and applications of the main intelligent control technologies for highway tunnel lighting. Combining on-site investigations, operating and energy-saving effects achieved are evaluated, and the future development direction of intelligent control technology for highway tunnel lighting is summarized. Furthermore, this paper proposes an optimization model of a stepless dimming control system and intelligent control technology in the tunnel's variable CCT based on stepless dimming. The results of this review can provide useful technical support for the design, operation and management of intelligent lighting control in highway tunnels.

Abstract:Lighting Research &Technology, Ahead of Print. To achieve energy saving and safe driving in a tunnel, this work proposes a tunnel intelligent dimming control and energy consumption monitoring system. Firstly, a dynamic predicted tunnel traffic volume is established to optimize the timeliness of the system tunnel traffic volume. Secondly, a backpropagation neural network-based dimming control model is constructed, in which the luminance outside the tunnel, traffic volume and vehicle speed serve as the input, and the luminance inside the tunnel is the output. This model is then combined with the established integrated closed-loop control model of the tunnel internal and external luminance to achieve continuous dimming control of the tunnel. Finally, an energy consumption monitoring system is designed with an energy monitoring unit. The designed system was implemented and tested for 63 days in the Yongtaiwen–Chayuanli (China) tunnel. Experiment results show that the designed system can automatically control the luminance of the tunnel lighting according to the luminance measured outside the tunnel, traffic volume and vehicle speed, thus achieving continuous dimming control. This significantly reduced the power consumption (by approximately 65%) whilst ensuring the safety of tunnel traffic.

Abstract:As an important part of ensuring traffic safety of highway tunnel, highway tunnel lighting system has some problems such as high energy consumption and low degree of intelligence in its use. In this paper, a set of intelligent dimming system for highway tunnel lighting is designed, which takes the environmental variables such as luminance value and traffic flow information inside and outside the tunnel as input, establishes the intelligent dimming mathematical calculation model, adjusts the output power of the system in real time, and then adjusts the brightness of LED lamps. At the same time, the system connects with the remote management system through Ethernet remote communication technology, and can also realize the function of remote dimming. It improves the intelligent level of highway tunnel lighting and reduces the energy consumption of highway tunnel lighting system.

Abstract:In order to realize the energy efficient on the traffic and illuminating lights in city, the Intelligent Traffic and Illuminating Control System is proposed in this paper. The working criteria of real-time monitoring and intelligently control are designed. The key technologies including Internet of Things with power line communication by LonWorks technology and the piezoelectric sensor on site detecting are utilized in the research. The traffic density is detected by piezoelectric sensor and is "told" to LonWorks network to adjust the traffic red lamp lighting time and the illuminating time. The working flow of the Intelligent Traffic and Illuminating Control System has been verified to ensure the sufficient capability by Cp 1.72 and Cpk 1.60 within Statistical Process Control. The Energy efficient is achieved by 35.71% electrical energy reduction and 66.67% fuel consumption reduction on the energy saving and the carbon oxide emission reduction, which demonstrates that the Intelligent Control System achieves effective and valuable real-time monitoring and intelligently control with superiority of the energy efficient compared to the previous reports.

Abstract:Most of traffic information inside the tunnel is obtained by the driver’s vision, and tunnel lighting environment is one of the main visual information sources. As one of indispensable factors, intuitively and practically, vehicle headlights definitely contribute to the lighting environment during driving, however, less is known about how headlights affect the lighting distribution inside the tunnel. To fill such knowledge gap, this paper proposed a numerical-based approach to quantify the effect of headlights on lighting distribution inside the tunnel. Specifically, a lighting environment model was established which consisted of reflections from various light sources and structures in the tunnel. Based on the model, the parametric study on effect of vehicle headlights on tunnel illuminance distribution was conducted. In order to study the effect of turning on the headlights on obstacle identification in the tunnel, visibility level (VL) was introduced as an evaluation method and equivalent veiling luminance (EVL) also was employed as an indicator to calculate the luminance of the driver's field of view in the tunnel. According to the results, the headlights led to an improvement of 5.3 % in the average luminance of the side wall and 4.5 % in the average luminance of the road surface. The distribution of illumination on the road surface showed a 10 m periodical change due to the layout form. VL and EVL can be improved by more than three times when the headlights on. Moreover, lighting distribution with headlights on is affected by different factors such as material reflectivity and headlight illuminance intensity. The reflectivity of the road surface has the most significant impact on the luminance distribution with headlights on compared with other materials, and when the road reflectivity is decreased to 23.3 %, the average luminance ratio between the side wall and road surface increases by 3.33 times. The conclusions of the study can conduce to tunnel lighting design for improving lighting uniformity and reducing lighting energy consumption.

Abstract:Traditional tunnel lighting luminance is calculated based on the designed hourly traffic volume and designed speed. This approach first determined the entrance section reduction factor and middle section's luminance through the look-up table method, then calculated each section's luminance in proportion. Since the designed value is often higher than the actual traffic flow value, and the calculated brightness value is so high which might lead to tunnel energy consumption. What's more, the designed value in this method is the piecewise discrete value, which does not meet the requirement of continuous dimming for LED lighting. In this case, under the premise of satisfying operation safety, how to carry out continuous intelligent energy saving control research and energy saving evaluation based on actual traffic value is an urgent problem to be solved in tunnel lighting. This paper first proposed a luminance calculation model for each lighting section which can realize continuous dimming as needed. Using the least squares method fitting the reduction coefficient and the luminance of the middle section to solve the luminance of the entrance and middle sections under the condition of any speed and traffic flow, and realizing the continuous optimization of the luminance calculation. Second, in terms of the shortcomings of the traditional graded dimmer control, this paper offered a highway tunnel lighting intelligent control algorithm with traffic flow, speed and luminance out of the tunnel as the input matrix, which meets the requirement of LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) neural networks, tunnel lighting characteristics and tunnel lighting section. Considering the objective function of optimization problem in LSTM, three gradient descent methods were introduced to optimize the model respectively. Third, this paper adopted equal proportion to arrange lamps and light distribution, and developed a tunnel lighting simulation environment based on DIALux to meet the energy conservation assessment requirements in operating tunnels. Roadway luminance and its total uniformity are selected as energy saving evaluation indexes. Finally, we established a three-dimensional tunnel model with the real environment of Jinding Lake 2# tunnel, then conducted simulations and experimental verifications of the intelligent control algorithm under sunny and cloudy weather conditions, and verified the performance of the intelligent lighting control algorithm under the three optimizers. The result of energy conservation evaluations shows that compared with traditional lighting design, the tunnel lighting energy conservation algorithm can save 23.61% of energy in sunny days and 31.40% in cloudy days.

Abstract:High rates of traffic accidents and lighting energy consumption are significant problems in highway tunnels. To address these problems, this study proposes a linear guiding system that uses line-shaped visual guiding facilities to improve the local luminance and contrast, and outlines the tunnel contour and road alignment. In addition, the principle, function, setting method, and composition of the linear guiding system are discussed. Using the existing highway tunnels as prototypes, we built simulation scenarios with different luminance and conducted driving simulation experiments and questionnaire surveys. We analysed the human factor demands of tunnel driving, studied the change rule of various human factor indicators under different luminance levels, and comprehensively evaluated the impact of linear guiding system on driving safety from multiple perspectives of the driver's vision, psychology, and behaviour. We introduce the concept of equivalent luminance, quantify the impact of linear guiding system on the driver, and explore the role of linear guiding system in energy conservation. The results showed that the linear guiding system has a positive effect on driver vision, psychology, and behaviour, particularly in low-luminance environments. A linear guiding system can optimise a driver's visual reference frame, enhance driver visual perception in a tunnel environment, and alleviate driver tension. It helps drivers to accurately perceive their own spatial position and speed, providing a good sense of position, speed, and comfort. A 2.3 cd/m 2 luminance highway tunnel with a linear guiding system is equivalent to a 4 cd/m 2 luminance traditional tunnel. For highway tunnels with luminance values of 4, 5, 6, and 7 cd/m 2 , the equivalent luminance values of the linear guiding system are 1.7, 1.8, 1.8, and 2.1 cd/m 2 respectively, which can reduce the energy consumption by 30–42 %.

Abstract:Owing to the special tubular structural characteristics of highway tunnels, drivers typically experience a significant change in visual luminance when entering tunnels, which seriously impacts driving safety. This paper proposes a lighting scheme based on optical fiber technology to introduce natural light into the tunnel portal section. First, an on-demand lighting scheme based on the use of daylight is designed by developing an optical fiber lighting system, lighting demand algorithm, and an on-demand lighting control scheme. Furthermore, the scheme is applied to a physical tunnel, and the safety and energy-saving potential of the scheme are analyzed based on the obtained data. The results indicate that the average luminance and luminance uniformity in the tunnel portal section appear to improve with the application of the proposed scheme; the luminance uniformity is particularly increased by 0.18. The correlative color temperature (CCT) of the environment inside the cave changes in real time with the CCT value of the phase pair outside the cave. Compared with the explicit use of electrical lighting, the lighting energy consumption during daytime can be reduced by 34.7% with the application of the proposed scheme, and the highest reduction of 79.8% can be achieved at 13:00.

Abstract:According to the Chinese Guidelines JTG/T D70/2-01-2014, there are many long tunnels in China, especially in mountainous areas. In long tunnels, tunnel lighting influence not only visual performance but also non-visual effects. Non-visual effects has enhanced the importance of some factors directly related to driving safety, such as pupil constriction and visual fatigue which seriously affect reaction time of driver. In this work, the relationship between LED spectrum, correlated color temperature (CCT) and reaction time, pupil area difference are analyzed respectively by the experiment of reaction time. Five LEDs with different CCT and short-wave relative spectral value (RSV) are compared to HPS and MH under different tunnel lighting conditions. Experimental results show that, in the threshold and transition zone of long tunnel at luminance160cd/m2, 80 cd/m2 and 24 cd/m2, reaction time is the shortest and pupil constricted the most for LED lighting with CCT 5100 K and short-wave RSV 0.312. While in the interior zone of long tunnel at luminance 4.5 cd/m2 and 2.5 cd/m2, reaction time is the shortest and pupil constricted the most for LED lighting with CCT 3800 K and short-wave RSV 0.215. Based on the results, combining the impacts of visual performance and non-visual effects in long tunnels, this work proposed the recommended values of CCT and short-wave RSV for LED light sources that are suitable for the luminance level of different zones. In this way, the precise lighting can be implemented to meet the needs of long tunnel lighting for driving safety and energy saving.

Abstract:A reasonable and applicative tunnel light environment is important to ensure driving safety. This review aims to contribute to this growing area of research by exploring the tunnel lighting, which expands from safety to visual comfort, energy saving, and low carbon This paper employs bibliometric method to a visual analysis of the relevant literature and summarizes current research efforts and development directions. Firstly, the literature is visually presented by CiteSpace to elaborate the state-of-art with the dimensions of the timeline graph, the keyword co-occurrence graph, and the institutions & countries co-occurrence graph. Afterwards the literature is reviewed from three major perspectives: energy saving, visual comfort, and low carbon. Current research is mainly on luminaire arrangement, auxiliary lighting and other measures to reduce energy consumption. Visual comfort is mainly improved by optimizing the light environment's physical quantities, e.g. luminance, color temperature, color rendering etc. Current measures to achieve low carbon targets include green energy, green photoconductivity, green luminaires and green operation. Energy saving, visual comfort and low carbon are interrelated and complementary. However, a systematic understanding of how tunnel lighting contributes to carbon emission is still lacking. There is still room for development in tunnel lighting to achieve full intelligent control and the goal of carbon neutrality.
