Abstract:Workplace injuries are common in today's society due to a lack of adequately worn safety equipment. A system that only admits appropriately equipped personnel can be created to improve working conditions. The goal is thus to develop a system that will improve workers' safety using a camera that will detect the usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). To this end, we collected and labeled appropriate data from several public sources, which have been used to train and evaluate several models based on the popular YOLOv4 object detector. Our focus, driven by a collaborating industrial partner, is to implement our system into an entry control point where workers must present themselves to obtain access to a restricted area. Combined with facial identity recognition, the system would ensure that only authorized people wearing appropriate equipment are granted access. A novelty of this work is that we increase the number of classes to five objects (hardhat, safety vest, safety gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection), whereas most existing works only focus on one or two classes, usually hardhats or vests. The AI model developed provides good detection accuracy at a distance of 3 and 5 meters in the collaborative environment where we aim at operating (mAP of 99/89%, respectively). The small size of some objects or the potential occlusion by body parts have been identified as potential factors that are detrimental to accuracy, which we have counteracted via data augmentation and cropping of the body before applying PPE detection.

Abstract:The construction site environment is quite complex with many dangerous hazards (e.g., foundation pits, holes). To avoid injuries, workers must wear helmets that are color-coded for the specific type of work, which is helpful to identify whether workers are in permitted areas. Therefore, it is possible to identify unauthorized intrusion by classifying the safety helmets. This study proposes a vision-based method called Helmet-Yolov5 to automatically detect unauthorized intrusions by workers on construction sites. Multiple improvement measures are made to enhance the model performance. First, the attention mechanism is used to enhance the weights of object regions in the image, which makes the detection of small objects more effective. Second, atrous spatial pyramid pooling is adopted to preserve the detail information of the image. Third, the universal upsampling operator is introduced to fuse image features at different scales. To verify the effectiveness of the improved model, images collected from a real construction site are used to build a large-scale image dataset of safety helmets for model testing. It shows that the proposed Helmet-Yolov5 model is more accurate than the original Yolov5 model, also with high inference speed. Compared to other state-of-the-art models (e.g., Yolov4), the Helmet-Yolov5 model has considerable advantages in term of high detection accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract:In the construction sector, ensuring worker safety is of the utmost significance. In this study, a deep learning-based technique is presented for identifying safety gear worn by construction workers, such as helmets, goggles, jackets, gloves, and footwears. The recommended approach uses the YOLO v7 (You Only Look Once) object detection algorithm to precisely locate these safety items. The dataset utilized in this work consists of labeled images split into training, testing and validation sets. Each image has bounding box labels that indicate where the safety equipment is located within the image. The model is trained to identify and categorize the safety equipment based on the labeled dataset through an iterative training approach. We used custom dataset to train this model. Our trained model performed admirably well, with good precision, recall, and F1-score for safety equipment recognition. Also, the model's evaluation produced encouraging results, with a mAP@0.5 score of 87.7\%. The model performs effectively, making it possible to quickly identify safety equipment violations on building sites. A thorough evaluation of the outcomes reveals the model's advantages and points up potential areas for development. By offering an automatic and trustworthy method for safety equipment detection, this research makes a contribution to the fields of computer vision and workplace safety. The proposed deep learning-based approach will increase safety compliance and reduce the risk of accidents in the construction industry

Abstract:Current research on personal protective equipment (PPE) detection has mainly focused on hard hats, overlooking the detection of reflective clothing. Therefore, this study aims to address this research gap comprehensively. We achieve this by creating a novel dataset using semi-automatic labeling techniques and enhancing the YOLOv5 model. The dataset consists of four categories, assessing the presence of hard hats and reflective clothing. Additionally, we introduce an attention mechanism and an improved loss function to tackle challenges related to detecting reflective clothing and overlapping detection frames. Through extensive multi-model comparison experiments, our improved model, AL-YOLOv5, outperforms the baseline model with remarkable advancements of 0.9 AP in the data-limited category and 0.4 mAP overall. Notably, our improved model shows substantial progress in detecting reflective clothing, significantly reducing false detections, and improving overlapping bounding frames. In conclusion, this study contributes to PPE detection accuracy through a novel dataset and an improved model.

Leveraging YOLO Models for Safety Equipment Detection on Construction Sites

Abstract:Occupational safety encompasses a range of practices adopted to protect the health and safety of employees. In the construction and industrial sectors, employees may be exposed to various risks such as falls, impacts, temperature changes and the effects of chemical substances. For this reason, personal protective equipment (PPE) is an important element for protecting employees against risks. The effective use of equipment such as a hardhat, mask, and vest makes an important contribution to the prevention of occupational accidents and health problems by ensuring the safety of employees. This study conducted three separate experiments investigating the potential of deep learning methods on occupational safety. In the first experiment, the YOLOv5n and YOLOv8n models were trained on the same data set with ten classes, and their performance was compared. In the second experiment, the YOLOv8n model was trained on a 2-class dataset to examine how the number of classes affected the model's performance. As a result of the experiments, it was seen that it emphasized the potential of deep learning and object detection methods to quickly and effectively monitor and evaluate the use of personal protective equipment.
SGK1 regulation by miR-466g in cortical collecting duct cells.

Abstract:Micro-RNAs (miRNAs) are noncoding RNAs that bind target mRNA transcripts and modulate gene expression. In the cortical collecting duct (CCD), aldosterone stimulates the expression of genes that increase activity of the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC); in the early phase of aldosterone induction, one such gene is serum and glucocorticoid regulated kinase 1 (SGK1). We hypothesized that aldosterone regulates the expression of miRNAs in the early phase of induction to control the expression of target genes that stimulate ENaC activity. We treated mpkCCDc14 cells with aldosterone or vehicle for 1 h and used a miRNA microarray to analyze differential miRNA expression. We identified miR-466g as a miRNA that decreased by 57% after 1 h of aldosterone treatment. Moreover, we identified a putative miR-466g binding site in the 3'-untranslated region of SGK1. We constructed an SGK1 3'-untranslated region luciferase reporter and found that cotransfection of miR-466g suppressed luciferase activity in human embryonic kidney-293 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Deletion or introduction of point mutations that disrupt the miR-466g target site attenuated miR-466g-directed suppression of luciferase activity. Finally, we generated stably transduced mpkCCDc14 cell lines overexpressing miR-466g. Cells overexpressing miR-466g demonstrated 12.9-fold lower level of SGK1 mRNA compared with control cells after 6 h of aldosterone induction; moreover, cells overexpressing miR-466g exhibited 25% decrease in amiloride-sensitive current after 6 h of aldosterone induction and complete loss of amiloride-sensitive current after 24 h of aldosterone induction. Our findings implicate miR-466g as a novel early-phase aldosterone responsive miRNA that regulates SGK1 and ENaC in CCD cells.
Improved detection network model based on YOLOv5 for warning safety in construction sites

Abstract:The safety of worker guarantee is a crucial task in construction site management. Many accidents occur in construction sites by falling, collisions, electrocutions, or being stuck in operating devices. The suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) stated in safety rules is widely used to ensure workers' safety. The use of PPE is relied on traditional methods such as physical monitoring and video observation that waste time, poor timeliness, and missed inspections. To overcome these limitations, this study utilized newly You Only Look Once (YOLO) algorithm, named YOLOv5, which includes four network structures, namely YOLOv5s, YOLOv5m, YOLOv5l, and YOLOv5x for safety detection. A data set with 11978 samples was used to establish a digital safety monitoring system via training and testing phases. The comparison results among the four models show that the YOLOv5s performed the best and the average detection speed reached 110 frames per second, which fulfils the real-time detection requirements. This study contributes to the state of the knowledge by (i) providing a one-step solution for the automatic identification the PPE on construction sites; (ii) proposing a valuable tool to assist site safety engineer in the task of automatically detecting the PPE worn by construction workers; and (iii) the effectiveness and superiority of the presented approach are demonstrated via large detection dataset with 11978 samples and real construction case. Abstract:Object detectors based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely deployed in industrial production for safety detection to guarantee the security of workers, and safety helmet detection is one of the most crucial application scenarios. In this article, we first consider the insufficiency of the existing largest open-source helmet detection dataset SHWD and introduce our safety helmet detection dataset which contains various industrial scenarios that are lacking in the former dataset. In addition, we reconsider the sample selection method of the Yolo series and propose a hierarchical positive sample selection (HPSS) mechanism in the training process, which improves the fitting ability of YoloV5. Furthermore, inspired by object detection in continuous frames from videos, we propose a post-processing algorithm based on box density to effectively suppress the appearance of false detection. Under the confidence threshold is 0.1, the combination of the two optimization strategies improves the $F1$ -dscore of YoloV5s by 12.47% without increasing any calculation. The dataset will be open-source in the near future.

Abstract:Personal protective equipment (PPE) plays a crucial role in safeguarding the well-being of workers on construction sites by mitigating the risk of accidents and incidents. Nevertheless, incidents stemming from a lack of awareness regarding PPE usage persist. To enhance the oversight of construction laborers for accident prevention, most current approaches involve overseeing the availability and correct utilization of PPE using intricate data processing techniques. However, these methods encounter challenges related to their applicability and capacity for universal implementation. This study presents the hybridization of seahorse optimization (SHO) algorithm with the YOLOv5 model to ultimate detection accuracy. First, an improved YOLO network is constructed through scale and loss function enhancement. Second, the SHO is utilized to tune the parameters of the improved YOLOv5. A data set with 4535 construction work images was collected for training, validation and testing the hybrid SHO-YOLOv5 model. Experimental results supported by statistical tests show that the SHO-YOLOv5 is a capable method for detecting automatically the PPE with a precision value of 0.74, recall value of 0.65 and F1 score of 0.68. The SHO-YOLOv5 surpasses the benchmarked models like YOLOv8, YOLOv5, Faster-R-CNN MobilenetV3, and Faster-R-CNN Resnet50. Therefore, the proposed hybrid approach is a promising tool to support the project managers in the task of safety inspection.

Target Detection of Safety Protective Gear Using the Improved YOLOv5

Abstract:In high-risk railway construction, personal protective equipment monitoring is critical but challenging due to small and frequently obstructed targets. We propose YOLO-EA, an innovative model that enhances safety measure detection by integrating ECA into its backbone's convolutional layers, improving discernment of minuscule objects like hardhats. YOLO-EA further refines target recognition under occlusion by replacing GIoU with EIoU loss. YOLO-EA's effectiveness was empirically substantiated using a dataset derived from real-world railway construction site surveillance footage. It outperforms YOLOv5, achieving 98.9% precision and 94.7% recall, up 2.5% and 0.5% respectively, while maintaining real-time performance at 70.774 fps. This highly efficient and precise YOLO-EA holds great promise for practical application in intricate construction scenarios, enforcing stringent safety compliance during complex railway construction projects.

Abstract:Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) plays a crucial role in protecting workers from unpredictable physical threats and reducing fatal occupational injury rates. However, PPE is not always worn by workers in all cases, which poses a challenge to site management. In this context, object detection methods based on deep learning have been used to strengthen site management. To address the challenges posed by limited PPE detection performance under complex environmental conditions, we develop the MARA-YOLO object detection model, which is designed to balance speed and accuracy. Firstly, based on YOLOv8-s, we introduce a modified re-parameterizable backbone, which consists of MobileOne-S0 and an efficient downsampling block known as the Attentional Space-to-Depth Block (AS-Block). Subsequently, we propose the R-C2F module, which fused feature maps from diverse receptive fields and enhances the model's sensitivity to the texture information of objects, as well as its ability to capture information from varying depths. Build upon R-C2F and Adaptively Spatial Feature Fusion (ASFF), a multi-scale feature fusion module RASFF is further introduced to mitigate inconsistent multi-scale outputs in the model. Finally, a dedicated dataset consisting of 2750 images covering 9 categories is constructed. The ablation experiments demonstrate that compared to the baseline, MARA-YOLO achieves a 6.7% improvement in AP50 and a 10.2% improvement in AP75 on the proposed KSE-PPE dataset. In the comparative experiments, MARA-YOLO achieves a mean average precision (mAP) of 74.7% on the KSE-PPE dataset, surpassing other lightweight state-of-the-art models by more than 4.95%.

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to develop better techniques for detecting the presence of safety gear such as helmets and vests in hazardous jobs like building, mining, and policing. With a fully convolutional neural network and a self-attention mechanism for effective item recognition, YOLOv8, a new object detection model, outperforms its predecessors. Notably, YOLOv8 removes anchors, which reduces box predictions and speeds up post-processing. With an impressive 96.6% mean average precision (mAP) accuracy in our custom dataset, YOLOv8 is useful for monitoring personal protective equipment usage and improving worker safety on construction sites. The DeepSORT algorithm integration adds sophistication, allowing for extensive object-tracking capabilities. This collaborative approach strengthens safety regulations, representing a substantial development in occupational safety in high-risk workplaces.

Personal Protective Equipment Detection in Extreme Construction Conditions

Abstract:Object detection has been widely applied for construction safety management, especially personal protective equipment (PPE) detection. Though the existing PPE detection models trained on conventional datasets have achieved excellent results, their performance dramatically declines in extreme construction conditions. A robust detection model NST-YOLOv5 is developed by combining the neural style transfer (NST) and YOLOv5 technologies. Five extreme conditions are considered and simulated via the NST module to endow the detection model with excellent robustness, including low light, intense light, sand dust, fog, and rain. Experiments show that the NST has great potential as a tool for extreme data synthesis since it is better at simulating extreme conditions than other traditional image processing algorithms and helps the NST-YOLOv5 achieve 0.141 and 0.083 mAP_(05:95) improvements in synthesized and real-world extreme data. This study provides a new feasible way to obtain a more robust detection model for extreme construction conditions.

Abstract:In the university laboratory environment, it is not uncommon for individual laboratory personnel to be inadequately aware of laboratory safety standards and to fail to wear protective equipment (helmets, goggles, masks) in accordance with the prescribed norms. Manual inspection is costly and prone to leakage, and there is an urgent need to develop an efficient and intelligent detection technology. Video surveillance of laboratory protective equipment reveals that these items possess the characteristics of small targets. In light of this, a laboratory protective equipment recognition method based on the improved YOLOv7 algorithm is proposed. The Global Attention Mechanism (GAM) is introduced into the Efficient Layer Aggregation Network (ELAN) structure to construct an ELAN-G module that takes both global and local features into account. The Normalized Gaussian Wasserstein Distance (NWD) metric is introduced to replace the Complete Intersection over Union (CIoU), which improves the network's ability to detect small targets of protective equipment under experimental complex scenarios. In order to evaluate the robustness of the studied algorithm and to address the current lack of personal protective Equipment (PPE) datasets, a laboratory protective equipment dataset was constructed based on multidimensionality for the detection experiments of the algorithm. The experimental results demonstrated that the improved model achieved a mAP value of 84.2 %, representing a 2.3 % improvement compared to the original model, a 5 % improvement in the detection rate, and a 2 % improvement in the Micro-F1 score. In comparison to the prevailing algorithms, the accuracy of the studied algorithm has been markedly enhanced. The approach addresses the challenge of the challenging detection of small targets of protective equipment in complex scenarios in laboratories, and plays a pivotal role in perfecting laboratory safety management system.
SH17: A Dataset for Human Safety and Personal Protective Equipment Detection in Manufacturing Industry

Abstract:Workplace accidents continue to pose significant risks for human safety, particularly in industries such as construction and manufacturing, and the necessity for effective Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) compliance has become increasingly paramount. Our research focuses on the development of non-invasive techniques based on the Object Detection (OD) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to detect and verify the proper use of various types of PPE such as helmets, safety glasses, masks, and protective clothing. This study proposes the SH17 Dataset, consisting of 8,099 annotated images containing 75,994 instances of 17 classes collected from diverse industrial environments, to train and validate the OD models. We have trained state-of-the-art OD models for benchmarking, and initial results demonstrate promising accuracy levels with You Only Look Once (YOLO)v9-e model variant exceeding 70.9% in PPE detection. The performance of the model validation on cross-domain datasets suggests that integrating these technologies can significantly improve safety management systems, providing a scalable and efficient solution for industries striving to meet human safety regulations and protect their workforce. Abstract:Workers on construction sites face numerous health and safety risks. Authorities have made numerous attempts to enhance safety management; yet incidents continue to occur, impacting both worker health and the project's forward momentum. To that end, developing strategies to improve construction site safety management is crucial. The goal of this project is to employ computer vision and deep learning methods to create a model that can recognize construction workers, their PPE and the surrounding heavy equipment from CCTV footage. Then, the hazards can be discovered and identified based on an analysis of the imagery data and other criteria including weather conditions, and the on-site safety officer can be contacted. Our own dataset was used to train the You Only Look Once model, version 5 (YOLO-v5), which was put to use as an object detection model. The detection model's performance in tests showed promise for fast and accurate object recognition in the field.

Abstract:Personal protective equipment (PPE) detection plays a crucial role in ensuring safety in various settings such as factories, hospitals, and disease prevention measures. However, manually checking individuals for proper PPE usage in public can be a challenging task. This paper focuses on the detection of face mask usage and aims to develop a robust system that can identify individuals who are not wearing masks or are not wearing them correctly. Here, we present an enhanced face mask detection method based on YOLOv4. Currently, there is a shortage of a comprehensive and diverse dataset that can be used to accurately evaluate the correct use of masks, mainly due to limited samples of incorrect mask wearing. To address this issue, we propose a pipeline to generate a simulated face mask dataset derived from the original dataset. This approach allows us to enhance the performance of the face mask detection model without requiring additional data samples. Additionally, we introduce a modified face mask detection model called MaskYOLO, which includes improvements in the original YOLOv4 network structure. In the feature extraction network, a global context block is incorporated between the backbone and neck of YOLOv4 to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the scene. Furthermore, the prediction network incorporates an improved structure to achieve a more efficient network. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method are demonstrated through statistical analyses of the experimental results. Our method outperforms the YOLOv4 baseline by 3.1% in mean Average Precision (mAP).

Abstract:Abstract In order for the offshore drilling platform to operate properly, workers need to perform regular maintenance on the platform equipment, but the complex working environment exposes workers to hazards. During inspection and maintenance, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets and workwear can effectively reduce the probability of worker injuries. Existing PPE detection methods are mostly for construction sites and only detect whether helmets are worn or not. This paper proposes a high-precision and high-speed PPE detection method for the offshore drilling platform based on object detection and classification. As a first step, we develop a modified YOLOv4 (named RFA-YOLO)-based object detection model for improving localization and recognition for people, helmets, and workwear. On the basis of the class and coordinates of the object detection output, this paper proposes a method for constructing position features based on the object bounding box to obtain feature vectors characterizing the relative offsets between objects. Then, the classifier is obtained by training a dataset consisting of position features through a random forest algorithm, with parameter optimization. As a final step, the PPE detection is achieved by analyzing the information output from the classifier through an inference mechanism. To evaluate the proposed method, we construct the offshore drilling platform dataset (ODPD) and conduct comparative experiments with other methods. The experimental results show that the method in this paper achieves 13 FPS as well as 93.1% accuracy. Compared to other state-of-the-art models, the proposed PPE detection method performs better on ODPD. The method in this paper can rapidly and accurately identify workers who are not wearing helmets or workwear on the offshore drilling platform, and an intelligent video surveillance system based on this model has been implemented.

Abstract:Tunnel construction sites pose a significant safety risk to workers due to the low-light conditions that can affect visibility and lead to accidents. Therefore, identifying personal protective equipment (PPE) is critical to prevent injuries and fatalities. A few research has addressed the challenges posed by tunnel construction sites whose light conditions are lower and images are captured from a distance. In this study, we proposed an improved YOLOX approach and a new dataset for detecting low-light and small PPE. We modified the YOLOX architecture by adding ConvNeXt modules to the backbone for deep feature extraction and introducing the fourth YOLOX head for enhancing multiscale prediction. Additionally, we adopted the CLAHE algorithm for augmenting low-light images after comparing it with eight other methods. Consequently, the improved YOLOX approach achieves an mAP of 86.94%, which is 4.23% higher than the original model and outperforms selected state-of-the-art. It also improves the AP of small object classes by 7.17% on average and attains a real-time processing speed of 22 FPS. Furthermore, we constructed a novel dataset with 8,285 low-light instances and 6,814 small ones. The improved YOLOX approach offers accurate and efficient detection performance, which can reduce safety incidents on tunnel construction sites.
