Abstract:In-situ burning (ISB) has been proven to be a practical way to clean oil on water. The burning behavior of spilled oil is strongly influenced by wind. The flame characteristics of flame base drag and burning efficiency affected by wind speed have been studied through a series of experiments in this study. The wind speeds varied from 0.5 m/s to 2.0 m/s and the inside diameters of the oil pools made from quartz glass were 40 mm, 90mm and 140mm. The variation of fuel vapor density was considered in the dimensionless model for predicting flame base drag length. The proposed formula was shown to correlate with the data of different pool diameters and wind speeds non-dimensionally by Froude number, fuel-air density ratio and the dimensionless heat release rate. The study helped to better understand the fire behavior under wind conditions, and most importantly the developed model would help guide better assessment of the burning in ISB operation.

Abstract:The spread of burning fuel spilled from oil product containers during offshore storage and transportation may cause large damage and trigger further accidents. Some analytical models already exist to predict the spread and burning behavior of liquid fuel spill fires, however, few experimental studies have been conducted to verify the model results. In this paper, continuous n-heptane spill fire experiments were conducted in a rectangular trench covered with water. The burning area, fuel spread rate, and thermal flux with different discharge flow rates and ignition delay times were investigated by both experimental and modeling means. The spill fire burning area, with 5 typical phases during burning, has a quasi-steady value which is directly proportional to the discharge rate but irrelevant to the ignition delay times. The steady burning rate, as the ratio of discharge rate over burning area, was estimated. A spread model was modified to simulate the spread of continuous liquid fuel spill fires in a one-dimensional channel, based on the balance between gravity and viscous forces. A cuboid solid flame model was used to compute the thermal flux from spill fires. The burning fuel spread and the heat flux calculated by the models agree with the experimental results.

Abstract:Spill fires caused by oil leakage from tankers may pose a threat to the liquid transportation safety. In this paper, a series of large-scale gasoline continuous spill fire experiments were conducted on a water surface. The spread area, flame height, burning rate and the temperatures in the water layer were measured for different fuel discharge rates and ignition delays. The findings showed that the spread process can be well predicted by an existing spread model without ignition. For ignited conditions, four burning phases were identified, namely (i) spread burning phase, (ii) shrinking burning phase, (iii) quasi-steady burning phase, and (iv) extinguishment phase. The burning rate at the quasi-steady phase was found to be approximately 45–62 % that of pool fires with the same burning area. Subsequently, a model was developed for predicting the quasi-steady burning rate of spill fires. The flame height at the quasi-steady burning phase was also analyzed and correlated with the fuel discharge rate. Finally, a model was proposed to predict the maximum burning area at the spread burning phase and validated against the experimental data. The present results are of practical importance in understanding the spread and burning characteristics of continuous spill fires and the associated risk assessment.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Burning of spilled oil has distinct advantages over other cleanup countermeasures. It offers the potential to convert rapidly large quantities of oil into its primary combustion products, carbon dioxide and water, with a small percentage of other unburned and residue byproducts. Disadvantages include the dispersal of the combustion products into the air. Mesoscale and laboratory experiments have been conducted to measure the burning characteristics of crude oil fires. Measurements on crude oil pool fires from 0.4 m to 17.2 m in effective diameter were made to obtain data on the rate of burning, heat release rate, composition of the combustion products, and downwind dispersion of the products. The smaller experiments were performed in laboratories at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Fire Research Institute in Japan; and the larger ones at the U. S. Coast Guard Fire Safety and Test Detachment in Mobile, Alabama. From these experiments, the value for surface regression rate of a burning crude oil spill was found to be 0.055 mm/s. A major concern for public safety is the content and extent of the smoke plume from the fires. Smoke yield, the fraction of the oil mass burned that is emitted as particulate, was found to be 13 percent. A large-eddy simulation calculation method for smoke plume trajectory and smoke particulate deposition developed by NIST showed that the smoke particulate deposition from a 114 m2 burn would occur in striations over a long, slender area 3.2 km wide and 258 km downwind of the burn.

Abstract:Operational guidance for the efficient use of combustion in the cleanup of a surface oil film, formed as a result of a spill at sea, is sought by approximate analysis. In remediation by burning, the spilled oil itself provides the energy for its cleanup. Attention is focused on situations holding relative ly far from the source of the spill and/or relatively long after the spill: the oil is taken to have so dispersed that the thickness of the film is on the order of a few millimeters. Under such conditions, the oil film is unlikely to burn without the use of multiple towed booms, each boom spreading its already-ignited, localized fire to continuously collected, previously unignited portions of the oil film. A simple, quasisteady, two-dimensional analysis suggests efficient values for the tow speed and the tow-line length as functions of such parameters as the oil density, oil-film thickness, oil burn/evaporation rate, etc. The analysis leads to specific suggestions for apparently unreported laboratory experiments that may be informative prior to at-sea operation.

Abstract:Liquid fuel spill fires usually occur in the oil storage and transportation industries. The fire develops as the burning fuel spreads, posing a huge threat to the facilities nearby. In this paper, continuously released liquid fuel spill fires were experimentally investigated in one-dimensional channels with three different widths. The spread and burning behavior of the spill fire on water and on a horizontal steel plate were discussed in terms of the burning rate, spread rate and fuel thickness. The burning rate, estimated as the ratio of the discharge flow rate to the steady burning area, was slightly higher for the spill fire on water. The burning rate increased with the trench width, a similar tendency as that of the pool fire, but its value was much lower than that of the pool fire with the same dimensions. A method for estimating the burning fuel thickness at the flame front was proposed, and the estimated values corresponded well to the theoretical values calculated based on the balance between the gravitational force and surface tension. The spread rate of the spill fire was correlated as an exponent function of the ratio of the volumetric discharge flow rate to the trench width. The width of the one-dimensional liquid fuel spill fire mainly affected the burning rate and spread rate.

Abstract:Spilled oil may cause serious environmental pollution and ecological destruction. Thus, an efficient oil spill response is essential to reduce and minimize the impacts seen from an oil spill. In-situ burning (ISB) has been proven to be one of the most convenient and efficient treatment methods for oil spills on sea. When in-situ burning operation is carried out on sea, the wind is usually available. Spilled oil pool fire flame will be blown to tilt with an angle from the vertical direction and the flame length will be stretched. This effect of flame on downstream will be significantly enhanced. It may even cause the burning of spilled oil out of control or hazard the operators near site. Therefore, it is meaningful to study the burning behavior of oil pool fire on open water under wind.A small-scale oil pool fire on open water experiment system was designed, which could simulate the boundary conditions of sea surface ISB. A series of experiments were carried out to study the effects of oil pool diameter, oil layer thickness and wind speed on fire flame length and flame tilt angle. Flame characteristics and temperature of burning system were recorded. This study observes burning behavior to evolve from short pool fire to long declining phase which transient through boilover stage. Dimensionless flame length in pool fire stage increases with wind speed. As expected the flame tilt is strongly influenced by wind speed, tilt angle increase with wind speed. The observed experimental behavior is captured as improvement in the flame length and flame tilt angle models.This study helped better understanding fire behavior in evolving environmental conditions, and the most importantly developed model would help guide better assessment of fire mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Large-scale experiments of n-heptane and gasoline continuous spill fires were conducted in an open area to study the spread and burning behavior of continuous liquid fuel spill fires on water. The fuel was ignited immediately after being released from an oil tank. Flame features and radiation flux were investigated with different discharge rates. It was observed that the spill fire undergoes three phases including fire growth and fuel spread, steady burning, and the transition to extinction. Data indicate that the discharge rate largely governs the spill fire characteristics. The maximum value of pool fire size, flame height, fuel spread rate, time average burning rate, and thermal flux all increase with the discharge rate. The facilities and data presented in this work may provide a basis for the future modeling study and the prediction of the possible secondary disaster induced by liquid fuel spill fires.

Abstract:As a traditional fossil fuel, petroleum fuel is prone to spills and fire accidents during storage, transportation, and use, which poses a great threat to the safe utilization of energy. This work aims to study the effect of porous media on the combustion characteristics of continuous spill fires. The transformer oil spill fire experiment is carried out on a porous bed with a length of 120 cm, a width of 15 cm, and a depth of 5 cm. The effects of sand diameter (0.75 mm, 1.5 mm, 3 mm, and 6 mm) and discharge rates (25 ml/min, 50 ml/min, and 75 ml/min) on the development of spill fires are analyzed. The results show that the spill fire fuel transport mechanism mainly includes gas phase diffusion caused by fuel consumption on the surface of a porous bed and liquid phase convection caused by capillary flow. Thus, three zones are formed from top to bottom: (i) the top vapor zone; (ii) the middle gas–liquid two-phase zone; and (iii) the bottom liquid phase zone. The presence of sand reduces the efficiency of the heat and mass. And it makes the spill fire stable combustion area increase compared with the smooth substrate. The stable combustion area has a positive correlation with the mass discharge rate and a negative correlation with the sand size. The stable combustion area of 1.5 mm, 3 mm, and 6 mm sand is 87.1%, 81.9%, and 77.5% of that of the 0.75 mm sand. In contrast to transformer oil pool fires and spill fires on smooth substrates, the burning rate is negatively related to the equivalent burning diameter. Meanwhile, the burning rate of spill fire on porous beds is significantly reduced compared with the first two. Based on the analysis of heat and mass transfer, a model for the burning rate of spill fire in porous media is formed and its correctness is verified. The experimental results are of great significance to the safe utilization of liquid energy.

Abstract:Spill fires are common during oil product storage and transportation after a loss of containment. Since the burning fuel is moving and the fuel depth is quite shallow, the burning rate in a spill fire is different from that of a pool fire with a static burning zone. Unlike pool fires, which have been studied for decades and have well-established correlations for burning rate, research on spill fires is inadequate. In this paper, continuously released n-heptane spill fire experiments were conducted on open water surfaces with varying fuel discharge rates. The pool diameters were measured, and the spill fire burning rates were estimated based on a dynamic balance between fuel supply and combustion. The burning rates in n-heptane pool fires from the literature were reviewed and compared with the estimated burning rates in spill fires of the same dimension. The spill fire burning rate was found to be close to that in a pool fire during the initial burning phase but lower than that in a bulk burning pool fire and that in a “fuel-level-controlled” pool fire. The distinction between the burning rates of spill fires and pool fires is explained by the heat balance analysis of the fuel layer. A model for the spill fire burning rate was proposed accordingly. The results calculated with the presented model are closer to the measured data than those calculated with pool fire models.

Abstract:In this work, a new Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) based approach coupled to a flamelet description of the gas-phase and seamless detailed solid-fuel kinetics is introduced and applied to a self-sustained oxy-fuel coal combustion chamber. LES enables a detailed description of the turbulent flow field, mixing, and heat transfer. The latter also includes thermal radiation for the particles and solving the radiative transport equation using the weighted sum of gray gases for the gas phase. The flamelet description of the gas phase represents an accurate and computationally efficient way to include turbulence-chemistry interactions taking into account the reaction of the complex gas mixture released from the solid fuel particles. For the first time, these two detailed models are coupled with a recently developed solid-fuel kinetic mechanism, allowing of the entire particle conversion process, i.e., devolatilization and char oxidation, to be seamlessly included in the simulation. After the required coupling strategies are discussed, the holistic model is applied to an oxy-fuel combustion chamber. Firstly, the results are extensively validated by the available measurements. Secondly, comparisons to state-of-the-art simplified solid fuel kinetics are carried out to assess the interaction of detailed solid-fuel kinetics with the other models.(c) 2022 The Combustion Institute. Abstract:The study of combustion characteristics and heat feedback mechanisms of liquid fuels is important for fire safety engineering, particularly in the context of energy utilization. In thiswork, the effect of lip height on the evolution of n-heptane pool fire burning rates and flame heights, as well as the thermal feedback control mechanism, were investigated in a series of experiments in the presence of cross-wind. The results showed that the lip height of pool and cross-wind speed have a significant effect on the flame characteristics and heat feedback mechanism. For a given wind speed condition, the radiative feedback fraction and the convective feedback fraction showed non-monotonic changes with an increase in the lip height of pool. With the increase of lip height and cross-wind speed, the lift off phenomenon gradually appeared inside the oil pool, while the flame height outside the oil pool gradually decreased. A new correlation is proposed, which can well describle the relationship between the flame height and the ratio of the air entrainment caused by the cross airflow to that caused by the flame buoyancy, which can provide references for the utilization and management of energy storage strategies nowadays.

Abstract:In the development of a fire, all kinds of equipment in ship cabins cause flames to flow around them, which greatly affects the combustion characteristics of the flames. Experimental studies were conducted on a pool of 80 cm × 6 cm × 5 cm containing a bluff body with a diameter of 2 cm and a height of 15 cm. Using diesel fuel as an ignition source, the flame flow around the bluff body propagating as a crosswind at speeds of 0.8–2.4 m/s was studied. The results showed that the fluctuation of the mass loss in a rising period decreased. A new flame spreading phenomenon of "continuous-flow around-broken-retract" appeared. The average spreading rate affected by the bluff body had a quadratic nonlinear relationship with the intensity of airflow. A prediction model of the flame drag length for the rectangular pool containing a bluff body was established. In addition, there were two vortices near a bluff body that were symmetrical and flowed in opposite directions. The temperature at the standing vortices reached a maximum of approximately 260 °C. At the same time, the vortices presented the characteristics of periodic formation and shedding with an interval of approximately 3.6 s.

Abstract:A mathematical model for simulating combustion and detonation of a fuel–air mixture in the gas cavity above the free water surface is developed. The model is based on solving the conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy for a two-phase reacting gas–water medium with the phases treated as interacting interpenetrating continua having their own values of velocity, temperature, and turbulence characteristics. The model is validated by laboratory experiments. The test rig included a transparent cylindrical tube with one closed-end, a pool with an optically transparent window, as well as power, ignition, control, and measurement systems. The tube was vertically immersed with its open end in water and filled with a gaseous explosive mixture. In the experiments, a stoichiometric propane–air mixture was ignited and burned in the semi-closed 60 mL cylindrical volume above the free surface of water. The model is shown to predict satisfactorily the lift force acting on the tube, the time history of pressure in the volume, and the dynamics of the flame and gas–water interface motion during combustion in the volume. The model is intended to be applied for the design of boats with propulsion solely by combustion/detonation of fuel–air mixture in cavities constructed into a bottom surface of the boat. This propulsion system replaces conventional propellers, thereby reducing hydrodynamic resistance.

Abstract:The vaporization and combustion characteristics of an oil/water emulsion droplet are investigated by analyzing the multicomponent heat and mass transport processes in the gas phase and the gasification of an immiscible liquid mixture at the gas-liquid interface. Results substantiate and quantify the potential reductions in soot and NOx formation through water emulsification and demonstrate that the embedded water micro-droplets can indeed be heated to the limit of superheat such that fragmentation of the emulsion droplet due to the internal pressure build-up can be achieved. It is further shown that the occurrence of this micro-explosive event is enhanced by increasing the ambient pressure and that at 1 atmosphere the fuel's boiling point has to be at least as high as that of n-hexadecane in order to achieve micro-explosion.
Confined combustion of lean hydrogen-air mixtures with suspended water micro-droplets

Abstract:The present study is devoted to the detailed numerical analysis of the combustion waves propagation through the lean hydrogen-air mixtures with suspended micro-droplets of water. Considered gaseous mixtures are characterized by a relatively low reactivity and so the intensity of the combustion waves is moderate. Herewith, it is found that the flame can be noticeably accelerated in the presence of suspended micro-droplets. In particular, it is shown that the interaction between the flame front and the droplets with a diameter larger than 25~$\mu$m results in the enhancement of the flame instability that provides a substantial acceleration of the mixture burn-out process. At increased number density of water droplets the combustion proceeds in a similar way to the combustion within a porous medium, and similar trends are observed such as the increase in flame speed and intensification of the combustion process with the pressure increasing inside the confined vessel. In such a way it can be concluded that the water should be atomized in a proper way when attempting to use it as hydrogen explosion inhibitor. Otherwise, water droplets could induce flame acceleration via the mechanisms distinguished in this paper.

Abstract:Flame propagation through a non-volatile solid-fuel suspension is studied using a simplified, time-dependent numerical model that considers the influence of both diffusional and kinetic rates on the particle combustion process. It is assumed that particles react via a single-step, first-order Arrhenius surface reaction with an oxidizer delivered to the particle surface through gas diffusion. Unlike the majority of models previously developed for flames in suspensions, no external parameters are imposed, such as particle ignition temperature, combustion time, or the assumption of either kinetic- or diffusion-limited particle combustion regimes. Instead, it is demonstrated that these parameters are characteristic values of the flame propagation problem that must be solved together with the burning velocity, and that the a priori imposition of these parameters from single-particle combustion data may result in erroneous predictions. It is also shown that both diffusive and kinetic reaction regimes can alternate within the same flame and that their interaction may result in non-trivial flame behavior. In fuel-lean mixtures, it is demonstrated that this interaction leads to certain particle size ranges where burning velocity increases with increasing particle size, opposite to the expected trend. For even leaner mixtures, the interplay between kinetic and diffusive reaction rates leads to the appearance of a new type of flame instability where kinetic and diffusive regimes alternate in time, resulting in a pulsating regime of flame propagation.

Abstract:This paper presents semi-empirical investigations on the quasi-steady burning rates of laminar and turbulent fire whirls established over liquid fuel pools. The inflow boundary layer above the fuel surface consists of two regions: outer reactive region and inner non-reactive region. Based on the momentum boundary layer solutions with the applications of stagnant film model and Chilton–Colburn analogy, the burning rates are correlated with ambient circulation and pool size for laminar and turbulent fire whirls respectively. It is shown that in general pool fires the mass and heat transfers on the fuel surface are controlled by natural convection, while in fire whirls they are strongly enhanced by forced convection. Fuel evaporation rate in the outer region is relatively larger than that in the inner region. The large proportion of fuel evaporated from the outer region is mainly due to its larger area. The predictions agree well with the data from the present experiments and the literature. Furthermore, the flame height is confirmed to be proportional to the ambient circulation for both laminar and turbulent liquid fire whirls.

Abstract:In situ burning is often used as a response method for oil slicks in the marine environment. This process however forms viscous tar-like residues that either float on the surface or sink through the water column, introducing organic species into the water phase. The interaction of this burn residue with the water phase also introduces dissolved organics into the water column. In this study, we conducted laboratory-scale experiments to characterize and compare the organic species entering the water phase from the petrogenic (fresh oil) and pyrogenic (burnt oil) input during oil spills. The oil and water-soluble organics were characterized using ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS). The results show that burning strongly increases concentrations of oil-related constituents entering the water phase, due to transformation reactions producing oxidized organic species with higher water solubility. The pyrogenic water-soluble organics also showed a higher percentage of unsaturated compounds relative to the petrogenic fraction. The effect of these highly unsaturated and oxygenated organic species on oil spill fate and their ecosystem impacts is currently unknown.

Abstract:This paper examines experimentally the burning behaviors of thin-layer transformer oil on a water layer. A series of transformer oil pool fire experiments with different initial fuel thicknesses was performed. The burning process, burning rate, liquid temperature and radiative heat flux were measured. The experimental results show that the whole process can be divided into five typical phases: (1) rapid growth burning, (2) steady burning, (3) short boilover burning, (4) continuous boilover and (5) fire decay. The appearance of the middle three phases (2-4) depends on initial fuel thickness. The steady burning rate is found to be independent of the fuel thickness but slightly higher than that of burning without a water layer, because of the decrease in the boiling point of the fuel-water mixture. A critical fuel thickness was found to determine whether continuous boilover or short boilover will occur. The results also show the intensity of the initial boilover increases with increasing fuel thickness but the intensity of subsequent boilover of thin-layer burning can surpass that of thick-layer burning for some cases. A linear correlation was found between the time to boilover and fuel initial thickness in agreement with literature findings. The present results are of practical importance in situ-burning and thermal hazard analysis for fire accidents due to leakage of liquid fuels on water. (C) 2020 Institution of Chemical Engineers.
