Abstract:This study employed 1-Hexyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide to mitigate the corrosion of Q235 steel in a hydrochloric acid environment. The evaluation of corrosion inhibition effectiveness was comprehensively characterized by combining electrochemical experiments with surface morphology observation. The experimental results demonstrated the capability of the ionic liquid in establishing a film layer on the surface of Q235 steel, which effectively hindered the charge transfer process. Notably, the corrosion inhibition efficiency attained a value of 92.3% at a concentration of 1mM corrosion inhibitor. Moreover, the process of the corrosion inhibitor adhering to the steel surface aligns with the Langmuir isotherm, demonstrating physicochemical adsorption behavior. The density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation were utilized for further exploration of the corrosion inhibition mechanism, and the results indicate the ionic liquid can be adsorbed onto the (110) surface of Fe in parallel through N atoms on the imidazole ring.

Abstract:Abstract With the help of the weight loss, and electrochemical techniques the suppressing action of the commercially available ionic liquid, 1-butylpyrrolidinium chloride [BPm 1,1 ] Cl for carbon steel corrosion in 3.5% NaCl medium was scrutinized. It found that this compound acts as an excellent inhibitor with protection performance raised by an increase of its concentration and temperature. The adsorption behavior of the investigated ionic liquid was a mixed-type inhibitor subordinating Langmuir adsorption isotherm. To expounding adsorption and corrosion inhibition mechanisms, various thermodynamics and activation parameters such as adsorption constant (K ads ), Gibb’s standard free energy ( Δ G ∗ $\Delta{{\text{G}}^{\ast}}$ ), activation energy (E a ), activation enthalpy ( Δ H ∗ $\Delta{{\text{H}}^{\ast}}$ ), and activation entropy ( Δ S ∗ $\Delta{{\text{S}}^{\ast}}$ ) were determined and debated. It has appeared that there is a strong interaction between the inhibitor molecules and the carbon steel surface in a predominantly chemisorptions manner. The presence of a protective inhibitor film on the metal surface was confirmed using a corroborative SEM tool. Moreover, the IL has screened for antibacterial activity against planktonic and sessile microorganisms. The obtained results emphasized that the utilized ionic liquid can be regarded as an efficacious biocide for both bacterial strains with a dissimilar efficiency.

Abstract:The features of this work on corrosion inhibition have been investigated based on the ecological awareness and according to the strict environmental legislations. This was done by studying how different imidazolium derivatives ionic liquids containing different alkyl chains R 8 , R 10 and R 12 affected the corrosion reaction of carbon steel specimen immersed in 1 M hydrochloric acid at various temperatures. Weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were utilized to examine the corrosion inhibition behavior on carbon steel. In addition, FT-IR spectroscopy was used to analyze the coated film that has been formed on the metal surface. The prepared ionic liquids showed effective inhibition efficiency, where the corrosion rate after the using of 100 ppm of R 8 -IL, R 10 -IL and R 12 -IL was decreased from 5.95 (μg cm −2 min −1 ) to 0.66, 0.56, and 0.44 (μg cm −2 min −1 ), respectively at 20 °C. In the polarization curves, the corrosion current, I corr , decreases by ILs addition and suggest that ILs act as mixed type inhibitors. From EIS findings, the increase in R ct and decrease in C dl values proves the adherence of inhibitor molecules on carbon steel surface. The temperature effect was also studied on the film formed, where increasing the temperature from 20 to 50 °C, the corrosion rate increased and the inhibitors efficacy decreased. The increasing in the length of the attached alkyl chain, the efficacies of the prepared inhibitors increases. Various thermodynamic parameters such as the reaction activation free energy (ΔG * ), the entropy of activation (ΔS * ), and the enthalpy of activation (ΔH * ), as well as the adsorption isotherm were investigated in order to interpret the mechanism and obtain the most accurate perception.

Effectiveness of Some Novel Ionic Liquids on Mild Steel Corrosion Protection in Acidic Environment: Experimental and Theoretical Inspections

Abstract:Three ionic liquids (ILs)-1-butyl-1-methyl-pyrrolidinium Imidazolate (BMPyrIM), 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium Imidazolate (BMImIM), and bis(1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium Imidazolate) (BBMImIM)-were synthesized and examined experimentally and theoretically as potential inhibitors for mild steel corrosion in HCl (1.0 M) solution. To our knowledge, two of the ILs successfully synthesized in our laboratory named BMPyrIM and BBMImIM are novel. Different electrochemical (potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)), surface and structural (scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)) and theoretical (Density functional theory (DFT)) techniques were utilized to confirm their use as efficient environmentally safe inhibitors. These ionic liquids were designed to study the cation effect (imidazolium and pyrrolidinium) and the dimeric effect of the imidazolium-based IL. A pronounced inhibiting effect was recorded using the optimum concentration (5 × 10-3 M) of BBMImIM with protection efficiency of 98.6% compared to 94.3% and 92.4% for BMImIM and BMPyrIM, respectively. The investigated ILs act as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitors and their protection obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The results obtained by SEM, EDS and AFM confirmed the mild steel protection by the formation of protective film of the ILs on the steel surface resulted in less damaged surfaces compared with the blank solution. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations illustrated the electronic structure of the investigated ILs and their optimized adsorptiοn configurations on mild steel surface. The findings from the different techniques helped to provide a supported interpretation of the inhibition mechanism.

Abstract:The challenge of corrosion posed as a result of acidic sittings is considered as a major industrial concern, wherein ionic liquids serve as crucial in addressing the corrosive impacts on metals. In this study, five selected cyclic ammonium based ionic liquids were synthesized; IL-1MPyrBr, IL-1MPipBr, IL-2PyBr, IL-3MPyBr and IL-4MPyBr and their chemical structures were characterized using a variety of spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR, IH-NMR, 13C-NMR, Elemental analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Their corrosion inhibition efficiency was studied on carbon steel in 1 M HCl via different concentrations at 298 K using chemical and electrochemical parameters (PDP and EIS). DFT quantum parameters were computed, and the noted results were in complete compatible with the experimental. The synthesized ILs recorded excellent inhibition on the carbon steel corrosion in acidic media with increasing efficiency by increasing the inhibitor concentrations from 20 to 100 ppm. Different cations in the synthesized ILs affect the anti-corrosion effect and IL-3MPyBr showed the highest inhibition (ηR); 96.12% using the lowest concentration. Kinetic and thermodynamic considerations were studied and illustrated.

Abstract:In this work, we study the efficiency of N 1 , N 3 -dibenzyl- N 1 , N 1 , N 3 , N 3 -tetramethylpropane-1,3-diaminium chloride, as anticorrosion. This compound exhibits potential as a prospective remedy to stop the deterioration of carbon steel caused by corrosion in 1.0 M HCl. The synthesis of this compound is described in a comprehensive manner, and its composition is supported by a range of precise analytical approaches such as elemental analysis, and mass spectroscopy. Based on the findings of the investigation, the synthesized Gemini ionic liquid demonstrates a robust capacity to slow down the rate at which the metal corrodes. The Prepared compound was evaluation by electrochemical and morphology study. Our results revealed that elevating the inhibitor concentration led to an augmentation in inhibition effectiveness, reaching up to 94.8% at 200 ppm of the synthesized compound at 298 K. It is crucial to emphasize that the recently prepared Gemini ionic liquid is consistent with the Langmuir adsorption model and function as a mixed inhibitor, participating in the physio-chemisorption process of adsorption.

Abstract:Three newly ionic liquids namely, 1-bnzyl-2-methyl-3-octyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium bromide, 1-bnzyl-3-decyl-2-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium bromide, and 1-bnzyl-3-dodecyl-2-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium bromide are synthesized and their chemical structures characterized via different spectra techniques (FT-IR, elemental analysis,and 1H NMR). The corrosion inhibition of newly ionic liquids was evaluated on aluminum alloy in 1 M HCl at varied exposure temperatures (298–318 K) and varied concentrations via various experimental and theoretical methods for example mass loss, electrochemical, spectral, and computational calculations. The results illustrate that these types of ionic liquids inhibit corrosion of aluminum in acid solution with maximum inhibition efficiency was reached 83.2 % at 298 K. The inhibition efficiency increases with the addition of zinc sulfate which has a synergistic impact which was reached to 92.7%. Also, the concentration of ionic liquids and the kind of cation have an impact on the obtained results. The existence of these inhibitors in the acidic solution improves the charge transfer resistance and lessens the double-layer capacitance. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm governs the adsorption of these inhibitors' molecules on the aluminum alloy surface, and they behave as mixed-type inhibitors. The outputs reveal that the computational calculations match the experimental data rather well.

Abstract:Steel surfaces treated with synthesized ionic liquid (ILs) namedly 4-methyl-1-(3-phenoxypropyl) pyridinium bromide ( Pyr 1 ) , 4-(dimethylamino)-1-(2-phenoxyethyl) pyridinium bromide ( Pyr 2 ) and4-(dimethylamino)-1-(3-phenoxypropyl) pyridinium bromide ( Pyr 3 ) were investigated in HCl acid media (1 M) using several techniques. Surfaces were analyzed by SEM and FESEM microscopy and by XPS spectroscopy, while the inhibition process was studied by electrochemical impedance (EIS) measurements. The results obtained by EIS demonstrated a higher charge transfer resistance that led to a high inhibition performance. According to Langmuir isotherm model and the activation parameters, these ILs can be adsorbed onto the mild steel surface through physical and chemical bonds. This study was supported by DFT and Monte Carlo calculations approach which confirms the adsorption behavior of the studied ILs.

Inhibition performances of imidazole derivatives with increasing fluorine atom contents in anions against carbon steel corrosion in 1 M HCl

Abstract:This work tests the anti-corrosion ability of three imidazolium-based ionic liquids with different anions—bis(fluorosulfon)imide ([FSI]−), bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([NTF2]−) and bis(pentafluoroethylsulfon)imide ([BETI]−)—on carbon steels in 1 M HCl solution at 298 K. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) indicated that increasing the number of –CF2 groups in the anion vastly enhanced the corrosion-inhibition efficiency (η). Even at small concentrations (1.25 mM), [(OHC2)MIm][BETI] achieved an η of 86%. The polarisation curve verified that [(OHC2)MIm][BETI] acted as a mixed-type inhibitor and that its adsorption followed the EI-Away adsorption model. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging intuitively confirmed the superior inhibition performance of [(OHC2)MIm][BETI]. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that [(OHC2)MIm][BETI] was stably absorbed on the carbon-steel surface. Contact angle measurements indicated that adding the –CF2 groups effectively decreased the hydrophilicity and surface energy of carbon steel from 69.39 to 19.93 mJ/m2, hindering the adsorption of water molecules. Moreover, a frontier molecular orbital theory (FMOT) study confirmed that the –CF2 groups enhanced the donation and drawing of electrons, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations revealed that they reduced the interaction energy (Einteract) values between the corrosion inhibitor molecule and the iron surface (from −321.08 to −612.74 kJ·mol−1). It was inferred that among the three ionic liquids, [(OHC2)MIm][BETI] absorbed most strongly to the carbon-steel surface.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive study on the corrosion inhibition properties of new organic compounds, (1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)methanethiol (LF1) and 1-dodecyl-2-((dodecylthio)methyl)-1H-benzimidazole (LF2), have been examined for inhibiting of Carbon-Steel (C.S) in 1.0 M HCl. Numerous methods, such as potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM), contact angle measurements, UV-visible spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations, were used to evaluate the effectiveness in preventing corrosion. The two benzimidazoles (LF1 and LF2)' inhibitory efficacy rose as their concentration increased, peaking at 88.2% and 95.4% respectively. The polarization graphs show a mixed behavior, with anodic predominance for LF1 and cathodic predominance for LF2. Thermodynamic investigations showed that the values of ΔG ads were -40.0 kJ mol-1 for LF1 and -43.1 kJ mol-1 for LF2, highlighting their strong adsorption onto the metal surface. Their adsorption process was in line with the Langmuir isotherm. Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) modeling have been utilized to examine and clarify the relationship between the inhibitor and carbon steel (C.S).

Abstract:In pickling conditions, corrosion inhibitors are commonly used to mitigate the corrosive effects of the acidic environment on metal surfaces. Green corrosion inhibitors are substances that provide corrosion protection while being environmentally friendly, often derived from renewable resources or having minimal environmental impact. Ionic liquids are a class of green corrosion inhibitors that have gained attention for their potential in corrosion protection due to their unique properties. In this study, we synthesized a bio-based choline hexanoate ionic liquid (referred to as ChH) and used FT-IR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy to elucidate its structure. Further the effectiveness of ChH IL was examined in preventing MS corrosion in 5% HCl at 20–80 °C. The corrosion behavior of MS was examined using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, and EIS measurements. Increasing inhibitor concentration and temperatures improved the inhibition performance. The highest efficiency i.e., 98.16% was observed at 3.3 × 10 −3 M of ChH at 60 °C. To verify the adsorption of ChH on the MS further investigations were done using FT-IR, Raman, and XPS analysis.

Synthesis of a new quaternary ammonium salt for efficient inhibition of mild steel corrosion in 15 % HCl: Experimental and theoretical studies

Abstract:The corrosion phenomenon and its economic impacts can hardly be ignored in any application. This study synthesized a quaternary ammonium salt (3) containing hydrophobic dodecyl and electron-rich diallylbenzyl amine moieties to be used in 15 % HCl as a corrosion inhibitor of mild steel. Several techniques, such as 1H and 13C NMR, IR, TGA, and elemental analysis, have been used to characterize inhibitor 3. Popular corrosion measurement techniques, namely weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization techniques, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, have been used to determine the efficiency of inhibitor 3. At 303 K and a moderately low concentration of 50 ppm, the quaternary ammonium salt-based inhibitor demonstrated a maximum efficiency of ≈95.0 %. At elevated temperatures of 313, 323, and 333 K, the inhibition efficacy values were recorded as 91.3, 82.8, and 75.0 %, respectively. Adsorption isotherm study revealed that the adsorption of inhibitor 3 followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The value of Δ G a d s ° was found to be - 40.19 kJ mol-1, indicating that inhibitor 3 became adsorbed via a mixed physi-chemisorption mechanism. A very high adsorption constant ( K a d s ) of 1.53 × 105 L mol-1 suggested strong adsorption of inhibitor 3. The difference in activation energy ( E a ) value of 42.4 kJ mol-1 between the control and the inhibited solution indicated an efficient adsorption of inhibitor 3. The ability of inhibitor 3 to retard both anodic and cathodic half-cell reactions was proved via open circuit potential and Tafel curves studies. Detailed discussions on the change in corrosion current densities ( i c o r r ), polarization ( R p ) and charge transfer ( R c t ) resistances have been offered to discuss the inhibition efficiency. Water contact angle measurement showed a drastic increase in mild steel surface hydrophobicity following inhibitor 3 adsorption. SEM-EDX and XPS studies confirmed the definitive presence of inhibitor 3 on the mild steel surface. Density functional theory (DFT) studies revealed the frontier molecular orbitals with which the metal surface interacts. A detailed corrosion inhibition mechanism has been offered in the context of adsorption isotherm and DFT studies.
Effect of Alkyl Chain Length on the Corrosion Inhibition Performance of Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids for Carbon Steel in 1 M HCl Solution: Experimental Evaluation and Theoretical Analysis

Abstract:In this study, five kinds of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([CXami]Br) ionic liquids with different alkyl chain lengths (8, 10, 12, 14, and 16) were selected as inhibitors. Then, their corrosion inhibition performances for Q235 steel in 1.0 mol L-1 HCl solution were investigated via a weight loss test, polarization curve method, and surface analysis techniques. The results show that these five imidazolium-based ionic liquids are all mixed-type inhibitors, and they can be spontaneously adsorbed onto the Q235 steel surface. The adsorption process follows the Langmuir model and involves mixed physical-chemical adsorption. Theoretical calculations confirm that the increase in alkyl chain length is conducive to the imidazolium-based ionic liquids exhibiting stronger chemical bonding abilities and forming denser adsorption films. The inhibition efficiency significantly increases below the critical micelle concentration (CMC) with an increase in alkyl chain length, and the highest inhibition efficiency is 95.17% for the [C16ami]Br inhibitor at the concentration of 0.005 mM. However, above the CMC, the inhibition efficiency is minimally affected by the alkyl chain length since all ionic liquid inhibitors have reached adsorption saturation on the steel surface.

Abstract:In this study, the mild steel corrosion inhibition performance and the corresponding mechanisms of five imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) in hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions were investigated using electrochemical experiments, weight loss measurement, morphology analysis, and quantum chemical calculation. The results revealed that these ILs inhibited the corrosion of mild steel in H2S and HCl solutions and did not change the corresponding mechanism of the corrosion reaction. The corrosion inhibition ability of these ILs decreased when the temperature increased. 1-Allyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([Amim]Br) exhibited the strongest mild steel corrosion inhibition capacity in H2S and HCl solutions. The corrosion inhibition capacity of the ILs can be attributed to their adsorption on metal surfaces, which obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm.E(HOMO)exhibited a higher influence thanE(LUMO)on the corrosion inhibition performance of the imidazolium-based ILs.
Novel imidazole based ionic liquid as anti-corrosion additive for aluminum alloy: Combined experimental, DFT/MD simulation and soft computing approach

Abstract:The anti-corrosion effectiveness of novel 1‐butyl‐3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroindate ionic liquid ([C 4 MIM][InCl 4 ] (IL)) for aluminum-silicon-titanium (Al-Si-Ti) based aluminum alloy in 1mole (M) potassium hydroxide (KOH) electrolyte at 303–343 K was explored in the current study. To realize this, standard methods such as weight loss, electrochemical investigation, density functional theory (DFT)/molecular dynamics simulation (MD-simulation), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and scanning force microscopy (SFM), were employed to scrutinize the anti-corrosion successfulness of [C 4 MIM][InCl 4 ] for aluminum alloy in KOH solution. From our findings, the ionic liquid mitigated the corrosion of Al-Si-Ti aluminum alloy, and the inhibition efficiency (IE%) is enhanced with improved ionic liquid concentration. The inhibition efficiencies obtained at 0.8 g/L [C 4 MIM][InCl 4 ] concentration were 88.46%, 82%, and 82.35%, for gravimetric, potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) procedures, respectively. PDP result disclosed [C 4 MIM][InCl 4 ] performed like a mixed-type inhibitor of a cathodic predominance. The SEM/SFM examination proved that the ionic liquid developed a shield coat on the metal alloy surface. The thermodynamic probe disclosed [C 4 MIM][InCl 4 ] molecules fastened onto Al-Si-Ti aluminum alloy surface by physisorption mechanism and best fitted the Frumkin adsorption isotherm model. The DFT/MD-simulation procedure confirmed the adsorption configuration and orientation of [C 4 MIM][InCl 4 ] molecules in gas and aqueous phase which is in harmony with the experimental discovering. Simulated neural network (SNN), and the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) were deployed for a robust training, forecast and modeling of the interactive effects of the input parameters and the expected feedback, Herein, training via the ANN and ANFIS designs without (GA), as well as computing the statistical indices such as the mean squared error (MSE), hybrid fractional error function (HYBRID%), absolute average relative error (AARE), Marquardt's percentage standard deviation (MPSED%) and r-squared (R 2 ) were employed to appraise the models capability. The optimal IE% forecasted was 88.4842% and 89.0643%, for the ANN and ANFIS, respectively. Based on the numerical values of the ANN and ANFIS parameters calculated much acceptance was accorded to the ANFIS model over the ANN due its high degree of precision and robustness. The aftermath of this study furnishes additional information on systematic plan of corrosion mitigation, and proffer useful instructions for the logical use of [C 4 MIM][InCl 4 ] as anti-corrosion additive for Al-Si-Ti aluminum alloy threatened by alkaline solution.

Abstract:The interactions between the metal and its environment are responsible for the electrochemical reactions leading to corrosion. To avoid further degradation and in general the appearance of corrosion products, a corrosion inhibitor must be applied on the metallic surface to reduce or prevent the corrosion of exposed metal in a corrosive environment. Corrosion inhibitors are one of the different methods used by conservation-restoration professionals to preserve metallic cultural heritage. The present case study is concerned with preserve and controls the corrosion of the iron entrance door/gate of the clock tower of Muhammad Ali mosque at Salah Ed-din Cairo citadel, Egypt, which was erected in 1845 AD, by using an environmentally friendly Corrosion inhibitor. This inhibitor is of attentiveness since there has been a growth in ecological consciousness and a variation in guidelines that control the toxicity of systematic corrosion inhibitors. So, the natural products are becoming the main source of environmentally-friendly corrosion inhibitors. Furthermost their extracts comprising the required features of the traditional corrosion inhibitors such as oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur. These elements are contributed to the adsorption process on the metal surfaces and arrangement of a protective layer, which shields the metal surface against environmental corrosion. Progress of green chemical knowledge compromises a new artificial approach for ionic liquids. These compounds are well-thought-out as new safe corrosion inhibitors which act in different corrosive conditions. Finally, applications of vapor-phase inhibitors and their role of action are recommended in the protection of iron windows under study.

Abstract:In the present work, we represent two thiazolidinediones, namely (Z)-5-(4-methoxybenzylidene) thiazolidine-2,4-dione (MeOTZD) and (Z)-5-(4-methylbenzylidene) thiazolidine-2,4-dione (MeTZD), as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel (CS) in 1.0 M HCl solution. Techniques for gravimetric methods, electrochemical measurements, and morphological characterization were used to conduct experimental evaluations. Additionally, calculations based on the fundamental principles of Density Functional Theory (DFT) were employed to simulate inhibitor–iron interactions. Experimental results indicated that investigated inhibitors can significantly enhance the corrosion resistance of CS, reaching a performance of 95% and 87% at 5 × 10−3 mol/L of MeOTZ and MeTZD, respectively. According to gravimetric and electrochemical experiments, inhibitor molecules obstruct corrosion reactions by adhering to the CS surface, which follows the Langmuir isotherm model. On the other hand, the morphological analysis showed a well-distinguished difference between unprotected and protected CS surfaces as a result of the inhibitors' addition to HCl. Projected density of states and interaction energies obtained from first-principles DFT simulations indicate that the studied molecules form covalent bonds with iron atoms through charge transfer.

Abstract:Abstract There is growing interest in using corrosion inhibitors and protective treatments to limit the degradation of mild steel, leading to the development of numerous Schiff bases as cutting-edge inhibitors. In this study, the effectiveness of a Schiff base, 3-((5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)imino)indolin-2-one (MTIO), to prevent mild steel corrosion in HCl was investigated using weight loss measurements, potentiodynamic polarization measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques, and surface characterization. The experimental results showed that 0.5 mM MTIO exhibited a satisfactory inhibitor efficiency of 96.9% at 303 K. The MTIO molecules physically and chemically adsorbed onto the mild steel surface following the Langmuir model, forming a compact protective film attributed to the presence of a thiazole ring in the MTIO structure. Theoretical calculations were combined with experimental techniques to investigate the anticorrosion performance and mechanism of inhibition.

Abstract:Metal surfaces can become damaged by corrosion when they interact with their surroundings, leading to huge financial losses. The use of corrosion inhibitors is one of the most crucial ways to combat the risky and hazardous effects of corrosion. In the present research, electrochemical techniques and surface analysis have been used to characterize the inhibition properties of (3-hydroxy-4-((4-nitrophenyl)diazenyl)-5-(phenylamino)thiophen-2-yl)(phenyl)methanone for the corrosion of carbon steel in an aerated 1.0 M HCl solution. Steel's corrosion resistance was discovered to be improved by the presence of the examined inhibitor in 1.0 M HCl medium through the adsorption of the inhibitor species to create a barrier layer. The findings showed that when inhibitor concentrations increased and solution temperatures decreased, the inhibition performance (%IE) of the compound under study enhanced. In the light of inhibitor probe's chemical makeup and theoretical analysis, the mechanism of the inhibition process was addressed. In a 1.0 M HCl solution containing 5 × 10−5 M of the inhibitor, the inhibition performance, at room temperature, was found to be almost 97%. The electrochemical results revealed that the examined compound successfully prevented carbon steel corrosion as a mixed-type inhibitor. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms are pursued by the adsorption of the examined inhibitor. Additionally, using Arrhenius and transition state equations, the activation thermodynamic parameters ΔEa, ΔH*, and ΔS* were determined and explained. The adsorption process was illustrated using DFT computation and MC simulations. The experimental findings and theoretical simulations concurred surprisingly well. Finally, the paper presents a discussion of the inhibitory mechanism.
