Abstract:The Agua Amarga salt marsh has been subjected to artificial seawater recharge on its surface during the period 1925–1969 for industrial purposes (saltwork activity) and from 2008 to present to compensate for coastal groundwater abstraction to supply Alicante desalination plants. This groundwater abstraction has caused piezometric depletion in the coastal aquifer connected to the protected salt marsh. The seawater recharge program also involved vegetation monitoring to control the impact on the salt marsh ecosystem, allowing data to be collected about the halophyte vegetation species growing in the salt marsh (Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, Sarcocornia fruticosa, and Ruppia maritima, among others) from spring and autumn field surveys. In this work, vegetation development is assessed with remote sensing for the period 1929–2022 using images with visible and near-infrared spectral resolution. Different spectral indices (NDVI, BI, and NDWI) and classification algorithms (random forest) are used to calculate the vegetation cover. Field data are employed to evaluate the protocols and compare the results, showing a 46% decrease caused by the salt works and a 50% increase as a result of natural evolution and artificial recharge. The spread of Phragmites australis is also addressed by comparing LiDAR data with field monitoring, showing an increase of 12% during the period 2005–2023. The advantages and complementarity of field monitoring and remote sensing information are explained.

Spatiotemporal Mapping of Salt Marshes in the Intertidal Zone of China during 1985-2019

Abstract:This study mapped the areal extent, identified the species composition, and analyzed the changes of salt marshes in the intertidal zone of China during the period 1985-2019. With the aid of the cloud platform of the Google Earth Engine, we selected Landsat 5/8 and Sentinel-2 images and used the support vector machine classification method to extract salt marsh information for the years of 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2019. Seven major species of salt marshes: Phragmites australis, Suaeda spp., Spartina alterniflora, Scirpus mariqueter, Tamarix chinensis, Cyperus malaccensis, and Sesuvium portulacastrum were identified. Our results showed that salt marshes are mainly distributed in Liaoning, Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Zhejiang, with varying patterns of shrinking, expansion, or wavering in different places. The distribution of salt marshes has declined considerably from 151,324 ha in 1985 to 115,397 ha in 2019, a drop of 23.7%. During the same period, the area of native species has dropped 95.4% from 77,741 ha to 3,563 ha for Suaeda spp. and 45.1% from 60,511 ha to 33,193 ha for P. australis; on the contrary, the area of exotic species, S. alterniflora, has exhibited a sharp rise from just 99 ha to 67,527 ha. For the past 35 years, the driving factors causing salt marsh changes are mainly land reclamation, variations in water and sand fluxes, and interspecific competition and succession of salt marsh vegetation. These results provide fundamental reference information and could form the scientific basis for formulating policies for the conservation and utilization of salt marsh resources in China.
A multi-sensor approach to monitor the ongoing restoration of edaphic conditions for salt marsh species facing sea level rise: An adaptive management case study in Camargue, France

Abstract:The Camargue or Rhône delta is a coastal wetland in southern France of which parts formerly devoted to salt production are undergoing a renaturation process. This study assessed a multisensor approach to investigate the link between sediment size distribution, habitat development mapped with Worldview 2, flooding durations estimated with time series of SENTINEL 2 images and elevation modelled with a LIDAR point cloud in former saltworks. A Random Forest classification algorithm was used to map the vegetation distributions of Sarcocornia fruticosa and Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, main representatives of the NATURA 2000 "Mediterranean and thermo-Atlantic halophilous scrubs (Sarcocornetea fruticosi)" habitat on the site. The best habitat map was obtained when considering the species separately. The random forest Out-of-bag errors were 1.43 % for S. fruticosa and 2.18 % for A. macrostachyum. Both species were generally distributed on different elevation and flooding duration zones considering mean values. Flooding duration was estimated with the Water In Wetland index (WIW) based on 15 Sentinel-2 scenes. Two models related to sediment grain size distribution were developed: one predicting the flooding duration and one predicting the halophilous scrub distribution. Maps of flooding duration, sediment grain size distribution and elevation highlighted two main zones in the study area: a western section with coarser sediments, shorter flooding durations and higher elevations under sea influence; an eastern section with finer sediments, longer hydroperiods and lower elevations under a historic river influence. This multidisciplinary approach offers perspectives for using space-based data over large scales to monitor changes in edaphic conditions of coastal areas facing natural and anthropogenic forcings. The results call for further investigations to predict the dynamic distribution of other coastal habitats following climate change impacts, such as sea level rise.

Abstract:Coastal saltmarshes provide globally important ecosystem services including 'blue carbon' sequestration, flood protection, pollutant remediation, habitat provision and cultural value. Large portions of marshes have been lost or fragmented as a result of land reclamation, embankment construction, and pollution. Sea level rise threatens marsh survival by blocking landward migration where coastlines have been developed. Research-informed saltmarsh conservation and restoration efforts are helping to prevent further loss, yet significant knowledge gaps remain. Using a mixed methods approach, this paper identifies ten research priorities through an online questionnaire and a residential workshop attended by an international, multi-disciplinary network of 35 saltmarsh experts spanning natural, physical and social sciences across research, policy, and practitioner sectors. Priorities have been grouped under four thematic areas of research: Saltmarsh Area Extent, Change and Restoration Potential (including past, present, global variation), Spatio-social contexts of Ecosystem Service delivery (e.g. influences of environmental context, climate change, and stakeholder groups on service provisioning), Patterns and Processes in saltmarsh functioning (global drivers of saltmarsh ecosystem structure/function) and Management and Policy Needs (how management varies contextually; challenges/opportunities for management). Although not intended to be exhaustive, the challenges, opportunities, and strategies for addressing each research priority examined here, providing a blueprint of the work that needs to be done to protect saltmarshes for future generations.
Quantifying the role of saltmarsh as a vulnerable carbon sink: A case study from Northern Portugal

Abstract:Saltmarshes play a crucial role in carbon sequestration and storage, although they are increasingly threatened by climate change-induced sea level rise (SLR). This study assessed the potential variation in Blue Carbon stocks across regional and local scales, and estimated their economic value and potential habitat loss due to SLR based on the IPCC AR6 scenarios for 2050 and 2100 in three estuarine saltmarshes in northern Portugal, the saltmarshes of the Minho, Lima and Cávado estuaries. The combined carbon stock of these saltmarshes was 38,798 ± 2880 t of organic carbon, valued at 3.96 ± 0.38 M€. Local and regional differences in carbon stocks were observed between common species, with the cordgrass Spartina patens and the reed Phragmites australis consistently showing higher values in the Lima saltmarsh in some of the parameters. Overall, the Lima saltmarsh had the highest total carbon per species cover, with S. patens showing the highest values among common species. Bolboschoenus maritimus had the highest values in the Minho saltmarsh, while the other species presented a similar carbon storage capacity. Potential habitat loss due to SLR was most evident in the Cávado saltmarsh over shorter timescales, with a significant risk of inundation even for median values of SLR, while the Lima saltmarsh was shown to be more resistant and resilient. If habitat loss directly equates to carbon loss within these saltmarshes, projected CO 2 emissions may range from 22,000 to 43,449 t by 2050 and 33,000 to 130,000 t by 2100 (under the IPCC SSP5–8.5 scenario). The study shows the importance of Blue Carbon site-specific estimates, acknowledging the potential future repercussions from habitat loss due to SLR. It emphasizes the need to consider local and regional variability in Blue Carbon stocks assessments and highlights the critical importance of preserving and rehabilitating these ecosystems to ensure their continued efficacy as vital carbon sinks, thereby contributing to climate change mitigation efforts.

Saltmarshes Response to Human Activities on a Prograding Coast Revealed by a Dual-Scale Time-Series Strategy

Abstract:On many prograding coasts, human activities such as alien species introduction and tidal flat reclamation, as countermeasures against land scarcity, are having a major impact on saltmarshes. Despite their capacity for regeneration given ample sediment supply, saltmarshes are likely to disappear if they continue to be impacted by such activities without effective monitoring and protection. However, effective monitoring requires a combination of saltmarsh species mapping and short timespan change analyses, which are difficult to accomplish due to the widespread, rapid, and complex characteristics of saltmarsh replacement in the region. Integrating multi-source remote sensing data with a times-series strategy, this study constructed saltmarsh species maps for the Jiangsu middle coast with 89.4 % overall accuracy (∼16.1 % higher than that achieved by the individual image classification method). Subsequently, we used these maps to explore the interaction between saltmarshes and human activities by a dual-scale analysis: macroscale analysis, aiming at saltmarsh ecosystem wide processes, to reflect the general evolutionary trend for all saltmarsh species, and microscale analysis, focusing on a species-specific process, to reveal the focal response mechanism for Spartina alterniflora. The results show that: (1) In the past 20 years, over 97.6 % (227.72 km2) of the loss of native saltmarshes (Phragmites australis and Suaeda salsa) was caused by tidal flat reclamation, and the invasion of S. alterniflora poses a potential threat to the future well-being of the native saltmarshes. The limited remaining area of the native saltmarshes, together with their long regeneration time, suggests that future land replacement will be dominated by the interaction between S. alterniflora and reclamation. (2) Intertidal reclamation promotes the expansion of S. alterniflora, as revealed by high linear correlations (mainly with R2 > 0.6) between the lateral expansion rate of S. alterniflora and reclamation. The prerequisite for this correlation was a sufficient width of S. alterniflora (850–1000 m for most of the coasts), and we propose that by maintaining this critical width, S. alterniflora will be capable of relatively rapid invasion after reclamation.

Effects of High Salinity and Water Stress on Wetland Grasses from the Spanish Mediterranean Coast

Abstract:The impacts of climate change are reaching unprecedented levels, heightening the risk of species loss and ecosystem service degradation. Wetlands, highly threatened ecosystems, serve vital ecological functions by capturing carbon, filtering water, and harbouring diverse wildlife. Coastal wetlands encounter many challenges, such as increased drought periods and escalating salinity levels, severely impacting plant biodiversity. Assessing how plants respond to various environmental stress factors is imperative for devising successful conservation strategies. In the present study, we examined three representative grass species found in various habitats within the Albufera Natural Park, close to the city of Valencia on the Spanish Mediterranean coast: Imperata cylindrica, Phragmites australis, and Saccharum ravennae. High salinity and water stress conditions were induced by subjecting the plants to irrigation with solutions containing 200, 400, 600, and 800 mM NaCl or withholding irrigation altogether to mimic coastal flooding and drought scenarios. The treatments were maintained until noticeable wilting of the plants occurred, at which point a range of stress biomarkers were determined, including photosynthetic pigments, ions, osmolytes, oxidative stress markers, and antioxidant metabolites, as well as antioxidant enzyme activities. Saccharum ravennae displayed the highest sensitivity to salt stress, whereas I. cylindrica appeared to be the most tolerant. The primary salinity tolerance mechanism observed in I. cylindrica and P. australis was a blockage of ion transport from the root zone to the aerial part, together with the salt-induced accumulation of proline and soluble sugars to high concentrations in the former. No significant effects of the water deficit treatment on the growth or biochemical parameters were observed for any of the analysed species. These findings offer valuable information for the effective management and conservation of coastal wetlands facing the challenges posed by climate change.
Working with women survivors of the Holocaust: affective experiences in transference and countertransference.

Abstract:This paper describes and discusses some late effects of massive traumatization on two women survivors of the Holocaust. Both had appeared to recover from their affective experience of psychic death and hopelessness in Auschwitz and to have moved towards a resumption of further stages of the life cycle. The normal transitional crises of adolescence, when children emotionally separate from their parents, led to severe breakdown in both these patients. Analysis showed that denial, repression and splitting had enabled them to distance themselves from the overwhelming horror of their past, but it had also led to concrete thinking as opposed to metaphorical, and to non-differentiation of psychic and somatic pain. Their inability to dream and the absence of fantasy life in the material could neither facilitate the analytic task of working through these patients' unbearable experience, nor enable them at first to face and recover unbearable affects during the course of the analysis. Hence the analyst's acceptance of an unbearable countertransference and careful monitoring of the affects evoked proved to be an invaluable tool.
Spatiotemporal Evolution of Salt Marsh and Influential Analysis of Reclamation of Jiangsu Middle Coast in Recent 25 Years

Abstract:There are a variety of salt marshes in wide tideland of Jiangsu coast. In recent years,the distribution pattern of salt marshes has changed dramatically caused by reclamation activities on a large scale. Deep understanding on the distribution and expansion of salt marshes under the impact of reclamation will help us propose corresponding decisions supporting resource development and environment protection of tideland. Taking above into account, we identified salt marshes along middle segment of Jiangsu coast using remote sensing images and NDVI with local OTSU method as well as digitized reclamation from images, and obtained the information of salt marshes and reclamation at 7 time points in recent 25 years. And then we analyzed spatiotemporal evolution of salt marshes and their response to the reclamation based on a variety of GIS methods. The main results showed that: 1) The area of salt marshes experienced a slight increase and then followed by a sharp decrease with almost 10%(324.40 km2 in 1987,291.04 km2 in 2013) total area reduce. After 2000, with the rapid disappearance of salt marshes,the width of salt marshes outside dim became narrower gradually. The overall pattern of distribution also changed: the majority of salt marshes distributed north to the Jiang Harbor before2000, but more and more concentrated on the coast between Xinyang Harbor and Doulong Harbor in recent years. 2) The area of disappeared salt marshes, which resulted from reclamation,reached 569.47 km2 in the past 26 years, accounting for 85.4% of the total disappearance. The intense reclamation activities impacted greatly on the native salt marshes in the coast area north to the Jiang Hrabor. Nowadays, the most part of middle segment of Jiangsu coastal area was only covered by Spartina alterniflora. 3) Reclamation in intertidal region could change surrounding sedimental environment, which played a certain role in the expansion of salt marshes. That means salt marshes may be restored after the reclamation. Nevertheless, if remained salt marshes outside dim were too less, the restoration would be unsustainable. Therefore, we had better slow down the speed as well as limit the size of reclamation, and pay more attentions on some fragile coasts, in order to achieve the sustainable development and utilization of tidal flat in the future.
Saltmarsh resilience controlled by patch size and plant density of habitat-forming species that trap shells

Abstract:Habitat fragmentaion into small patches is regarded as a vital cause of biodiversity loss. Fragmentationof habitat-forming species is especially harmful, as patchiness of such species often controls ecosystem stability and resilience by density and patch size-dependent self-reinforcing feedbacks. Although fragmentation are expected to weaken or even break such feedbacks, it remains unclear how the resulting patchiness of habitat-forming species affect ecosystem resilience to environmental stresses. Here, using Spartian alterniflora, the habitat-forming species in saltmarshes as a model, we investigate how patch size, plant density, and shell aggregation interactively control the persistence of a degrading salt marsh that suffered from erosion induced by hydrodynamics. Our results demonstrate that large patches can trap more shells along the patch edge than the smaller ones, therefore significantly facilitating plant re-growth within the patch. Shell removal experiments further reveal that large patches trapping more shells along patch edges reinforce their own persistence by decreasing erosion and thus facilitating plant recovery. By contrast, small patches with lesser plants cannot persist as they trap less shells along patch edges but are able to accumulate more shells at interior locations where they hinder plant re-growth, indicating a critical threshold of patch size ~20 m2 below which ecosystem collapses. The current study highlights the importance to identify critical threshold of stress-resistant patch sizes in transition-prone ecosystems as early-warning to alert undesired ecosystem collapse and restoration practice.
The impact of the change in vegetation structure on the ecological functions of salt marshes: the example of the Yangtze estuary

Abstract:Salt marshes worldwide are faced with threats from rising sea levels and coastal development. We measured changes in salt marsh vegetation structure using remote sensing and its consequences for carbon sequestration, wave attenuation, and sediment trapping ability using remotely sensed imaging, field measurement data, and the published literature data pertaining to the Yangtze Estuary, a rapidly urbanizing area in Eastern China. From 1980 to 2010, the total area of vegetated salt marsh decreased by 17 %, but the vegetation structure changed more dramatically, with the ratio of Phragmites/Spartina/Scirpus changing from 24:0:76, to 77:0:23, 44:13:43, and 33:39:28 in 1980, 1990, 2000, and 2010, respectively. Carbon sequestration increased slightly from 1980 to 2010, with the dramatic shifts in plant species composition. The total length of seawall inadequately protected by salt marsh vegetation increased from 44 km in 1980 to 300 km in 2010. Sediment accretion increased (from 8 to 14 million m3/year) due to the spread of Spartina, which to some extent compensated the loss of total vegetated area in the salt marsh. Changes in the delivery of functions were not linearly related to the change in the area of vegetated salt marsh, but more from the combined effect of changing vegetation structure, sediment input, and land reclamation. Under threat of sea-level rise, protection and maintenance of vegetation structure outside the seawall are of great importance for the safe economic development inside the seawall.

Impact of land-use change on salt marsh accretion

Abstract:Salt marsh vertical accretion that keeps pace with relative sea-level rise (RSLR) promotes habitat resilience and a continuously growing carbon stock. Vertical accretion, however, hinges on various salt marsh biogeomorphic feedback loops that respond to changing sediment supply, storms events, accelerating RSLR, elevation, and vegetation density. During the latter half of the 20th century, a large proportion of watersheds on the lower coastal plain of North America experienced land cover change. Many salt marshes show slow rates of vertical accretion over that period suggesting degradation and destabilization attributed to reduced upstream sediment loads and changing proportions of mineral sediment to organic matter. Here, we investigated a potential dichotomy observed at many sites in coastal North America between previously published accretion rates of the subtidal bay bottoms and adjacent salt marshes that were exceeding and lagging behind RSLR since 1950 CE, respectively. In 12 small coastal watersheds that formed within tributary and coastal prism incised valleys, we coupled 210Pb-derived accumulation rates of fringing salt marshes and previously published data from adjacent tidal creek bay bottoms with geospatial analysis of watershed land cover change since 1959, inundation duration, and vegetation density. Accumulation rates were higher at marsh sites within tributary incised valleys with lower relief watersheds, smaller tidal ranges, shorter inundation times, higher vegetation densities, and where land cover changes were dominated by increased cleared forest area. Additionally, mass accumulation rates (MAR) accelerated at 8 of the 12 marsh sites after a Major Land Cover Change (MLCC). Despite this acceleration in MAR, only 2 marsh sites recorded average sediment accumulation rates (SAR) greater than RSLR after a MLCC, which suggests that most of the marsh sites are drowning or being converted to subtidal habitat. This may be misleading, however, because modern marsh platform elevations at all but one marsh site were above local mean sea level, so the marshes could be accommodation limited. This work supports the disconnect found in previous research suggesting that estuaries are accumulating sediment at sustainable rates while their fringing salt marshes are not, which illuminates the complexities associated with sedimentation regimes in small local watersheds and their fringing salt marshes.

Identifying loss threshold and migration trajectory in the management of Suaeda salsa wetland under coastal squeeze

Abstract:The coastal salt marsh wetland is mainly located in the tidal area where sea and land are intertwined, which has the functions of promoting silt and consolidating beach, wave reduction and disaster reduction, and is an ecological barrier against erosion in the coastal zone, which has important ecological value. Nevertheless, owing to the intricate nature of wetland species formation mechanisms and community distribution patterns, the impact of coastal squeeze on Suaeda salsa wetlands loss may not exhibit a linear relationship, necessitating further elucidation of the specific processes involved. Precisely understanding the extent to which coastal squeeze affects the threshold of loss in the Suaeda salsa wetland holds immense importance in safeguarding the distinctive red beach landscape. Furthermore, it represents a pivotal scientific challenge that necessitates resolution in the management of coastal wetlands for their protection and restoration. Hence, drawing upon the theoretical framework concerning the impact of coastal squeeze on the degradation of coastal Suaeda salsa wetland, this study employs the representative silty coastal region of China's northern Liaodong Bay as a case study to conduct empirical investigation. The research integrates Landsat imagery and digital elevation data, and incorporates spatial autocorrelation, elastic coefficient analysis, and barycenter model analysis to examine the threshold of degradation and spatial variations of Suaeda salsa wetland in response to coastal squeeze. The results show that: (1) The risk intensity of coastal squeeze in the study area exhibited a pattern of initial decline followed by an increase from 1995 to 2020, with the highest risk areas predominantly located in the development zone on the eastern bank of the Liao River Estuary. (2) There was a positive correlation between the growth of the coastal squeeze index and the loss of the Suaeda salsa wetland. When the proportion of area in which the coastal squeeze deteriorates reached 43.9%, the Suaeda salsa wetland lose resilience against the impact of coastal squeeze, leading to an intensified rate of loss. (3) Compared with the west side of the Liao River, the critical area of coastal squeeze and the loss barycenter of the Suaeda salsa wetland on the east side of the Liao River have a greater range of changes. The planning and management of coastal ecological restoration necessitates considering the occurrence conditions of the coastal squeeze impact threshold on the loss threshold of wetland and the migration characteristics of the wetland loss area. This approach enables the timely control of coastal squeeze risk intensity in the area and the preservation of wetlands' resistance to external disturbances. Consequently, it holds immense importance for the sustainable development of coastal wetlands.

Abstract:Salt marshes exist at the terrestrial-marine interface, providing important ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration. Tidal inputs play a dominant role in salt marsh porewater mixing, and terrestrially derived freshwater inputs are increasingly recognized as important sources of water and solutes to intertidal wetlands. However, there remains a critical gap in understanding the role of freshwater inputs on salt marsh hydrology, and how this may impact marsh subsurface salinity and plant productivity. Here, we address this knowledge gap by examining the hydrologic behavior, porewater salinity, and pickleweed ( Sarcocornia pacifica also known as Salicornia pacifica) plant productivity along a salt marsh transect in an estuary along the central coast of California. Through the installation of a suite of hydrometric sensors and routine porewater sampling and vegetation surveys, we sought to understand how seasonal changes in terrestrial freshwater inputs impact salt marsh ecohydrologic processes. We found that salt marsh porewater salinity, shallow subsurface saturation, and pickleweed productivity are closely coupled with elevated upland water level during the winter and spring, and more influenced by tidal inputs during the summer and fall. This seasonal response indicates a switch in salt marsh hydrologic connectivity with the terrestrial upland that impacts ecosystem functioning. Through elucidating the interannual impacts of drought on salt marsh hydrology, we found that the severity of drought and historical precipitation can impact contemporary hydrologic behavior and the duration and timing of the upland-marsh hydrologic connectivity. This implies that the sensitivity of salt marshes to climate change involves a complex interaction between sea level rise and freshwater inputs that vary at seasonal to interannual timescales.

Abstract:Tidal salt marshes offer crucial ecosystem services in the form of carbon sequestration, fisheries, property and recreational values, and protection from storm surges, and are therefore considered one of the most valuable and fragile ecosystems worldwide, where sea-level rise and direct human modifications resulted in the loss of vast regions of today's marshland. The extent of salt marshes therefore relies heavily on the interplay between upland migration and edge erosion. We measured changes in marsh size based on historical topographic sheets from the 1850s and 2019 satellite imagery along the Texas coast, which is home to three of the largest estuaries in North America (e.g., Galveston, Corpus Christi, and Matagorda Bays). We further distinguished between changes in high and low marsh based on local elevation data in an effort to estimate changes in local ecosystem services. Our results showed that approximately 410 km2 (58%) of salt marshes were lost due to coastal erosion and marsh ponding and nearly 510 km2 (72%) of salt marshes were created, likely due to upland submergence. Statistical analyses showed a significant relationship between marsh migration and upland slope, suggesting that today's marshland formed as a result of submergence of barren uplands along gently sloping coastal plains. Although the overall areal extent of Texas marshes increased throughout the last century (~100 km2 or 14%), economic gains through upland migration of high marshes (mostly in the form of property value (USD 0.7–1.0 trillion)) were too small to offset sea-level-driven losses of crucial ecosystem services of Texan low marshes (in the form of storm protection and fisheries (USD 2.1–2.7 trillion)). Together, our results suggest that despite significant increases in marsh area, the loss of crucial ecosystem services underscores the complexity and importance of considering not only quantity but also quality in marshland conservation efforts.

Abstract:Intertidal restoration through realignment of flood defenses has become an important component of the U.K. coastal and estuarine management strategy. Although experimentation with recent deliberate breaches is in progress, the long‐term prognosis for salt marsh restoration can be investigated at a number of sites around Essex, southeast England where salt marshes have been reactivated (unmanaged restoration) by storm events over past centuries. These historically reactivated marshes possess higher creek densities than their natural marsh counterparts. Both geomorphology and sedimentology determine the hydrology of natural and restored salt marshes. Elevation relative to the tidal frame is known to be the primary determinant of vegetation colonization and succession. Yet vegetation surveys and geotechnical analysis at a natural marsh, where areas with good drainage exist in close proximity to areas of locally hindered drainage at the same elevation, revealed a significant inverse relationship between water saturation in the root zone and the abundance of Atriplex portulacoides, normally the physiognomic dominant on upper salt marsh in the region. Elsewhere in Essex natural and restored marshes are typified by very high sediment water contents, and this is reflected in low abundance of A. portulacoides. After a century of reestablishment no significant difference could be discerned between the vegetation composition of the storm‐reactivated marshes and their natural marsh counterparts. We conclude that vegetation composition may be restored within a century of dike breaching, but this vegetation does not provide a reliable indicator of ecological functions related to creek structure.

Effects of Land Use Changes on Ecosystem Services Value Provided By Coastal Wetlands: Recent and Future Landscape Scenarios

Abstract:Wetlands are very sensitive to land use changes which alter supply and quality of their ecosystem services. This study analyzes the effect of land cover changes on the spatial and temporal patterns of the value of ecosystem services provided by coastal wetlands in northwest Mexico. These ecosystems have a high degree of naturalness, but are at risk because of land use changes promoted to reactivate regional development. Remote sensing and Markov chains modeling were used to estimate change trends, together with a value transfer approach for the ecosystem service valuation. The results indicated that the total flow of ecosystem service value tended to increase (18 million dollars (2007 USD)), presumably biased by the highest worldwide value assigned to saltmarsh/unconsolidated bottom, which increased in area by 8% during the study period. The most notable transition probability was observed between natural wetlands, highlighting littoral and saltmarsh as the classes with the highest probability of change over time. The southern part of the study area is the most susceptible to change, where unconsolidated bottom and forested mangrove (saltmarsh) are prevalent. Therefore, we can argue that the conservation of these coastal environments should be a priority in future land use management.

Abstract:Salt marshes act as natural barriers that reduce wave energy during storm events and help protect coastal communities located in low-lying areas. This ecosystem can be an important asset for climate adaptation due to its particular capability of vertically accrete to adjust to long-term changes in water levels. Therefore, understanding marsh protection benefits thresholds in the face of sea-level rise (SLR) is important for planning future climate adaptation. In this context, the main goal of this manuscript is to examine how the storm protection benefits provided by salt marshes might evolve under SLR projections with different probability levels and emission pathways. In this study, a modeling framework that employs marsh migration predictions from the Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM) as parameterization into a hydrodynamic and wave model (ADCIRC + SWAN) was utilized to explicitly represent wave attenuation by vegetation under storm surge conditions. SLAMM predictions indicate that the SLR scenario, a combination of probability level and emission pathways, plays a substantial role in determining future marsh migration or marsh area loss. For example, results based on the 50% probability, stabilized emissions scenario show an increase of 45% in the marsh area on Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore by 2100, whereas Dorchester County alone could experience a 75% reduction in total salt marsh areas by 2100 under the 1% probability, growing emissions scenario. ADCIRC + SWAN results using SLAMM land cover and elevation outputs indicate that distinct temporal thresholds emerge where marsh extent sharply decreases and wave heights increase, especially after 2050, and exacerbates further after 2080. These findings can be utilized for guiding environmental policies and to aid informed decisions and actions in response to SLR-driven environmental changes.

Abstract:Low-lying coastal areas are high-risk areas regarding sea-level rise (SLR) due to the combination of low elevation, subsidence and currently low sediment supply, on the one hand, and their high natural and socio-economic values, on the other. Because of this, there is a growing need to assess the integrated impact of SLR taking into account the interactions between physical and ecological factors to make more informed decisions for the design of adaptation strategies. This study presents a methodology for improved SLR-induced flood-damage assessments in natural areas which is composed of (i) a pseudo-dynamic method coupling equilibrium-based coastal response and classical bathtub modeling approaches and (ii) a simple method to account for habitat conversion following inundation. This methodology is applied to low-lying coastal areas of Catalonia under different SLR scenarios, which show very different sensitivities depending on the configuration of the water-land border, topography, geomorphology, and degree of human impact on the floodplain. In terms of potential impact, natural habitats will be the most benefited from the likely conversion at the expense of agriculture lands. This can help coastal managers to adopt adaptation strategies where considering the inherent capacity of some coastal landscapes to adapt opens up new alternatives.

Rapid Reclamation and Degradation of Suaeda salsa Saltmarsh along Coastal China’s Northern Yellow Sea

Abstract:Suaeda salsa saltmarshes are an important coastal wetland habitat of China’s northern Yellow Sea, which plays a critical role in sequestering carbon (blue carbon), protecting shorelines, maintaining biodiversity, and has substantial economic value (e.g., ecotourism). However, the area of S. salsa has been rapidly declining due to several different threats from reclamation and invasive species that impact its natural succession. Here, we map the changes in the distribution of the S. salsa saltmarshes along the northern Yellow Sea of China (NYSC) at 5-year intervals by applying the supervised maximum likelihood method to analyze Landsat images from 1988 to 2018 and investigate the potential impact of three important factors on habitat change by analyzing the temporal changes in S. salsa saltmarshes with other land covers. S. salsa saltmarsh areas have decreased by 63% (264 km2 ha to 99 km2), and the average loss of S. salsa saltmarshes was 5.5 km2/year along the NYSC over the past three decades. There have been many dramatic declines in the two main distribution areas of S. salsa saltmarshes with a 77% loss of habitat area in Liaodong Bay (from 112 km2 to 26 km2) and a 52% loss in the Yellow River Delta wetland-Guangli-Zhima estuarine wetland (from 137 km2 to 65 km2). Land reclamation is the most important impact factor in the loss of S. salsa saltmarshes, while there have been limited effects of natural succession and smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) invasion. In light of the important ecological services and economic value of the S. salsa habitat, emergency conservation actions (e.g., habitat restoration, strictly supervision) are needed to limit the rapid habitat loss, which should include the immediate cessation of extensive land reclamation along the NYSC.
