Abstract:Identity directly impacts how university students behave and make decisions in entrepreneurial practice. Therefore, it is significant to explore the factors influencing the identity construction of student-entrepreneurs to understand how processes are internalized by students, which may then affect their entrepreneurial identity. This article interrogates the formation and transition of the entrepreneurial identity of student-entrepreneurs in a Chinese research university. This paper argues that identity formation is a dynamic and nonlinear process where both role and social identities are involved in its development. Factors that would promote the desired identity formation would include, among others, a tolerant atmosphere across universities, integrating identity issues into the process of entrepreneurship education, and providing university-wide support for entrepreneurship which will be beneficial to improving and sustaining entrepreneurial identity among students.
Becoming researchers: A narrative study of Chinese university EFL teachers’ research practice and their professional identity construction

Abstract:This article reports on a narrative study of university EFL (English as a foreign language) teachers’ research practices and their identity construction as researchers in China. Drawing upon data from narrative frames among 104 teachers and in-depth interviews with four teachers, the study reveals that teachers’ increased research engagement, as well as mixed attitudes towards and external drives for research, are mediated by their mixed contexts of supporting policies and practical constraints. It also recounts four scenarios of teachers’ identity construction as researchers and explores the reasons why their identities as researchers are more or less fragmented at different times, which may be attributed to academic competence signaled by research interests and publications, institutional and peer support in the workplace, and the professional life cycles in which they are involved. It concludes with implications for promoting research and teachers’ becoming researchers as paths for empowerment and professional excellence through joint efforts from university administrators, mentors, teacher educators and teachers.

Abstract:Though teacher identity is currently receiving an increasing amount of attention in the literature on teacher education and teacher development, little information is available about the richness, fluidity and individuality of EFL teacher identities in various L2 settings. This preliminary case inquiry has echoed that comment by exploring qualitatively how language teacher identity features in the participant's categorization of herself as a professional during her school-to-work transition at a shadow school in hinterland China. Drawing on semi-structured interviews and reflection essays, the triangulated data were analyzed with thematic analysis in order to find categories of enacted identities and key factors that impacted Jane's teacher identity formation. The results indicate four identities existed: an attendant, a firefighter, a coolie and a tramp. The fundamental predicaments hovering over the green employer encompass an array of contextual factors, including (1) overwhelming anxieties for potential early student leavers; (2) overhuge workload and fluid working schedule; (3) endless non-teaching related commitments; (4) lack of career prospect and development ladder. The results of the study contribute to the understanding of the complex and dynamic nature of teacher identity influenced by sociocultural landscapes where language teachers are situated. The research suggests implications for teacher educators and stakeholders on how to transform a novice to a qualified EFL teacher within the ideology and discouraging discourse of a burgeoning privately-owned training market, and on how to mediate green teachers' agency and autonomy against the bottlenecks of their initial years of teaching.

Abstract:Foreign language teachers' recognition of their identity is essential to their professional development. Drawing on bicultural theories, this study investigated two American teachers who recounted their experiences of teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at a university in China. This study leverages the Two-directional Extension Model as the theoretical framework for analysis. It employs interviews, reflective journals, and field observations to collect data to seek ways of improving foreign teachers' bicultural communication competence by exploring how the two American EFL teachers construct their bicultural identity. One major finding highlights the EFL teachers' bicultural identity construction as a dynamic and ongoing process upon which several have effects, affecting professional development in higher education in China.

Abstract:This study investigates the enacted identities of Chinese university English teachers in the context of English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching. The aim is to explore the underlying structure and characteristics of these teachers' identities and examine their alignment with the principles of sustainable learning in education (SLE), which goes beyond knowledge acquisition in a chosen discipline and aims to nurture life-long and resilient learners that are able to reflect upon, renew, relearn, and assess what has been taught and orient themselves for future learning processes. A questionnaire was used to gather perceptions of enacted identities in teaching practice from 326 Chinese university English teachers. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) revealed four distinct dimensions of identity: Advocate and Motivator for English Learning, Facilitator of English Learning, Reflective Practitioner and Researcher, and Book Teacher. Interviews were conducted with a subsample of 12 teachers to further explore the contextualized meanings of these identity factors. The findings indicate that these identity dimensions align with the four tenets of sustainable learning in education, reflecting the teachers' orientations toward sustainable language teaching practices. This study contributes to our knowledge of language teachers' shared identities and offers important implications for language teacher professional development.

Abstract:Curriculum reform urges teachers to constantly reflect on existing identities and develop probably whole new identities. Yet, in the wake of the poststructuralist view of identity as a complex matter of the social and the individual, of discourse and practice, and of agency and structure, teacher identity is a process of arguing for themselves and hence ethical and political in nature. Drawing on Foucault's notion of ethical self-formation and its adoption by Clarke (2009a) "Diagram for Doing Identity Work" in teacher education research, this 2-year-long case study explores how two Chinese English-as-foreign-language (EFL) teachers engaged in identity work in a changing curricular landscape. The analysis of narrative frames and semistructured interviews reveals the relations between the relative stable and the evolving elements of teachers' identity work, and the essential role of teachers' ethical agency based on reflective and critical responsiveness to the contextual reality and the dynamic power relations during the reform. The findings argue for the importance of nourishing teachers' reflective identity work and ethical agency during the turbulence of educational change.

Abstract:Despite a surge of studies on the construction of researcher identities among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers, insufficient attention has been paid to their ongoing identity development after establishing a researcher identity. Using narrative inquiry, this study investigated how an EFL academic transitioned from being a rising star in research to becoming a teaching-focused academic midcareer with emotional flux in situated socio-institutional contexts. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews, narrative frame, institutional documents, and the participant's academic profile. The data analysis revealed that while the participant started her research journey as a confident novice researcher, she faced negative emotions arising from encounters with potential bias in academia, institutional managerial practices, and diminished self-agency with waned research motivation. Such negative emotions gradually escalated, posing severe impediments to her researcher identity. Eventually, these impediments resulted in her research stagnation and subsequent transformation of her identity into that of a teaching-focused EFL academic midcareer. The findings provide a nuanced understanding of the complexities involved in the continuous development of EFL academics' researcher identities in the changing landscape of higher education. The study also provides implications for supporting EFL teachers in constructing and maintaining a robust researcher identity to facilitate their ongoing professional development.

Abstract:This study investigates the language teacher identity of one teacher of Chinese in a community-based language school in the U.S. Inspired by Tochon’s authentic learning model (2000) and Bourdieu’s theory of habitus (1972/1977), this study developed a conceptual framework which views language teacher identity as a learning–practice relational triangle that is composed of experiential knowledge, learned knowledge, and knowledge-in-action. The life history of a teacher of Chinese in a community-based language school was investigated. Narrative inquiry was used as the methodology (Clandinin, 2013). The results show that teachers of Chinese are productive practitioners in forming their language teacher identities. Their problem solving and reflective thinking show that they continuously establish communication between different cultural ideological views, and establishing such dialogues is the ultimate goal for language teachers. The results also demonstrate the effectiveness of the learning–practice relational triangle for conceptualising language teacher identity as a contextualised and life-long process.

Abstract:Despite a surge of research interest in pre-service teachers' identities over the past years, scant attention has been paid to the process of their identity construction during their teaching practicum. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, this study seeks to fill this gap by examining the identity construction experiences of four pre-service school counselling teachers who have just completed their teaching practicum in a university in China. Informed by possible selves theory and identity conflicts theory, the study shows that the participants' identity construction emerged from the interactions between their core identities and new forms of identities arising from their daily practice and social interactions in different school settings. While some participants' identities updated and expanded in a supportive work environment, some experienced identity conflicts and deficits with a reduced sense of commitment towards teaching in a constraining school context. However, facilitated by their self-agency and contextual affordance, some navigated their identity conflicts by developing a negotiated identity and/or enriching their ideal identities for their continuing practice and development. The study argues for an explicit focus on teacher identities in current teacher education programs to raise student teachers' identity awareness and facilitate their reflective learning and identity building.

Negotiating the impact of international experiences on professional identity development: A case study of Chinese college English teachers

Abstract:This study traced changes in Chinese college English teachers' professional identities as a result of participating in international professional development programs and examined how the teachers negotiated their professional identities upon return to China. Five college English teachers with at least 10 months of overseas professional development experience took part in the study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and relevant documents. It was found that international experiences had a great impact on the teachers' professional identity construction by empowering them to develop multiple identities as language teaching professionals, university academics, and change agents. The teachers' reconstruction of professional identities upon return to China was not a linear and smooth process. It was a dynamic process of negotiating with the constraints of the personal and professional contexts to which the teachers returned. The study sheds light on the identity development of internationally trained language teachers and contributes to a deeper understanding of the impact of international experiences on the professional development of second language teachers in similar contexts. It has implications for study abroad programs and for home institutions about how to support the long-term professional development of returnee teachers.
Academic literacy development and professional identity construction in non-native English-speaking novice English language teachers

Abstract:Studies examining students' academic literacy development have received increasing attention in the past two decades, with exponential growth in the literature since 2010. Despite this, there have been relatively few empirical studies on novice teachers' academic literacy learning process and the construction of teachers' professional identities. To address this issue, this study employed a longitudinal narrative inquiry to trace and evaluate the professional identity construction of two Chinese novice language teachers as they developed academic literacy in their master's and doctoral programs in the United States. The study adopted a Community of Practice (CoP) framework and drew upon various data sources, such as both novice teachers' coursework, reflection journals, statements of teaching philosophy, and other supplementary documents, to evaluate how each participant was socially engaged (or disengaged) in a new language education community and how they developed professional identities as language teachers in this process. The findings indicate that the pedagogical knowledge and theories acquired by both participants during their graduate studies informed their teaching methods and promoted their development of a researcher-teacher identity. In addition, the longitudinal data allowed for tracking changes in both participants' self-efficacy and emotions. While the stories of both novice teachers described the evolution of their teaching beliefs throughout their graduate studies, their narratives also highlighted a lack of micropolitical literacy training at the graduate level. This study contributes to our understanding of the connection between academic literacy development and the formation of teacher professional identity by shedding light on novice language teachers with a non-native English-speaking background. The implications for future research are also provided.

Abstract:Teacher identity is the reflection of teachers’ perception, position, and identification as teachers. Teachers’ identities are dynamic and continuously negotiated by the interplay of their professional practices, past experiences, and contextual conditions. Drawing on this understanding, this study explores Chinese English teachers’ professional identities within a private English institution in China. Research data was collected through semi-structured interviews with six Chinese English teachers from one private English institution. Interview data was analysed thematically. The study results revealed common teacher identities as advocates of learner autonomy, struggling teachers for higher-level students and sources of students’ learning motivation. Specifically, teachers were challenged in cultivating autonomous students by institutional and sociocultural contextual obstacles. They were also in a challenging situation to improve the effectiveness of teaching higher level students. However, teachers exhibited positive perceptions towards their influence on students’ learning motivation reflected in their effort to actively establish teacher-student relationships and utilize facilitative teacher roles. The research findings suggest the need for designing more effective teacher trainings, improving teachers’ working conditions and a call for re-evaluating English language learning among Chinese students.
Cultural Identity of Chinese Students in a Transnational University in China

Abstract:Previous investigations on the complex process of identity construction in the transnational social field have shown to be relevant worldwide, characterised by increasing globalisation (Valentin, 2014). When compared to other countries, China has been actively participating in the process of transnational education (British Council, 2017). While aspiring to be a powerhouse in higher education provision, there seems to be a tension between such an interest in interenationalising education and the Chinese cultural agenda, with a generational anxiety in relation to the possibility of losing"Chineseness" through a fast-paced process of gaining position in the international educational space (Li et al., 2014). Engaging with these discourses, this study explores how Chinese students construct their cultural identities in a transnational university in China, and which factors such as ethinicity, language and staff, for instance, would impact their perceptions of identity and how. Informed by an analysis of 31 semi-structured interviews of Chinese students, including an arts-based activity, under a critical realist paradigm grounded in Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this study expects to inform relationships between local and international socialisation and local cultural needs and issues for future teaching policies and practices. It also offers a unique look into Chinese students in transnational spaces, where intercultural interactions occur and identities are (re)shaped.

Second Language Identity of Chinese Junior High School EFL Learners: Its Construction and Sources

Abstract:Language learning is widely agreed to be closely related to individuals’ identity constructions. In recent years, identity research has gained more attention for its constructed and dynamic nature could provide a more insightful view of language learning processes and thus help better improve language learning and teaching. Many existing studies on language identities have been conducted in English as a Second Language (ESL) contexts and focused on more mature English learners. However, studies conducted in English as Foreign Language (EFL) contexts like China, especially those focused on younger learners were inadequate. With a qualitative research design and using a series of narrative data collection methods, the current research explored the second language identity of Chinese Junior High School (CJHS) EFL learners both in terms of its construction and sources. The findings of the research suggested that CJHS EFL learners’ second language identity experienced a downtrend flux as their English learning moved on. Factors including social context in China, experiences in English classes, the direct connection between English and their daily life and intimate people around weave together to build their second language identities. Several pedagogical implications were also proposed to help CJHS EFL learners negotiate their second language identity so that they could better locate themselves in the more globalized world.

Abstract:Academic visitor programs aim to enhance university teachers’ teaching and research capacity and intercultural competence. Its impact, however, has remained under-researched. Using the data collected from two rounds of in-depth interviews with 13 Chinese university English teachers over a year and a half, this study explored their experiences as academic visitors in the UK through the lens of professional identity. Findings revealed that the participants came with various expectations and negotiated and constructed different identities during their academic visits. The participants’ developing identities in turn affected their investment in their professional development in their situated contexts. The study provides important implications for academic visit programs which need to be designed in line with the complex needs and identities of university teachers.
Seeing teacher identity through teachers' beliefs: Narratives of pre-service EFL teachers in China

Abstract:Language Teaching Research, Ahead of Print. In the field of foreign and second language (L2) teacher education, existing literature has emphasized the importance of examining language teacher identity in uncovering how L2 teachers grow professionally. However, there have been relatively few investigations into emerging pre-service L2 teachers' language teacher identity at an early stage of professional development. Focusing on a group of pre-service teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) in China who were in their first semester of study in English teacher education, the present research was set out to explore these emerging pre-service teachers' beliefs and how their beliefs connected to teacher identities. Analyses of participants' survey narratives showed that pre-service EFL teachers highlighted three significant aspects of their English language teacher identities, which were English teachers as 'instructors', as 'individuals', and as 'English experts'. Results of three focal pre-service EFL teachers' interviews provided further evidence to demonstrate how teachers' beliefs linked to teacher identities. The significance of these findings and directions for future research were discussed. This study concluded with suggestions for supporting emerging pre-service L2 teachers' professional growth in language teacher education.

Abstract:This narrative inquiry traces a Chinese college English teacher’s cognitive transformation in the teaching-research nexus over a 4-year time period from the perspective of sociocultural theory (SCT). Several stories were narrated based on the data from reflective journals, literature reading notes, and interaction notes to show how the participant walked out of the teaching-research contradiction and finally achieved professional development. The findings indicate that the college English teacher’s perception of the research-teaching nexus developed when she actively exercised her agency to take part in social interactions in a supportive sociocultural environment with the regulation of appropriate mediational tools. The conceptual progress in the research-teaching nexus finally contributed to her professional development in both teaching and research. The findings of this study have implications for non-key universities and their academics on how to effectively promote teaching-research integration.

Abstract:This research investigates how three Government-funded Normal Students constructed and reconstructed their identities in a pre-service teacher education programme in China. Drawing upon data from interviews, field observation and the pre-service teachers’ written reflections, the study explores the cognitive, social and emotional processes of their teacher identity construction. The findings of the study suggest that pre-service language teachers develop and modify their identities through engaging in cognitive learning, interacting with different socialising factors and experiencing various emotions in university coursework and teaching practicum. The paper concludes with some implications for language teacher education and pre-service teacher education.

Abstract:This paper reports on our inquiry into how language teachers' identities relate to their efforts to teach intercultural communicative competence. In the study, we collected data through in-depth interviews with and observations of 16 Chinese language teachers in Hong Kong's international schools. The analysis revealed that the participants simultaneously embraced multiple professional and sociocultural identities related to intercultural communicative competence teaching. Specifically, the professional identities included a Chinese language teacher identity and a school staff member identity, while the sociocultural identity comprised a Chinese culture bearer identity, a multicultural identity, a cultural transmitter identity, a culture learner identity, and a cultural bridge identity. These identities were found to compete with or reinforce each other in mediating the participants' efforts in relation to teaching intercultural communicative competence; different identities were often associated with different understandings of and approaches to teaching intercultural communicative competence. The findings suggest that language teacher educators need to recognise teacher identities as an important pedagogical resource when preparing language teachers for teaching in cross-cultural contexts.
