Abstract:Oilfield flow assurance is the subject to study the impact on the flow of production fluids due to physicochemical changes in the production system. Mineral scale deposition is among the top 3 water-related flow assurance challenges in petroleum industry, particularly for offshore and shale operations. Scale deposition can lead to serious operational risks and significant financial loss. The most commonly adopted strategy in oilfield scale control is the deployment of chemical inhibitors. Although conventional chemical inhibitors are effective in inhibiting scale threat, they have the drawbacks of short transport distance and limited squeeze lifetime due to their intrinsic chemical properties. In the past decade, as an alternative to conventional chemical inhibition, research efforts have been made to prepare functional nanomaterials with different chemical compositions to overcome the drawbacks of conventional chemical inhibitors. These synthesized nanomaterials can serve as delivery vehicles to deploy inhibitors into the target location in the production system. These nanomaterials are reported to have multiple advantages over the conventional inhibitors in terms of transportability, controlled release, and functionality, evidenced by a series of experimental studies. This review presents an overview of scale inhibitor nanomaterial development and the current methods to synthesize and to evaluate these nanomaterials in a systematic and comprehensive manner. This review focuses on the chemistry principles and methodologies underlying inhibitor nanomaterial synthesis and also the chemical instrument and strategies in evaluating the physiochemical properties of these materials in terms of inhibition effectiveness, transportability, and inhibitor return. The scale inhibitor nanomaterials (SINMs) presented in this review exemplify the continuous development in our capabilities in adopting novel nanotechnology in combating actual engineering challenges in petroleum industry.

Abstract:Oilfield scale is one of the major flow assurance issues today in the oil field. The use of scale inhibitor is an effective approach to control scale deposition. Among them, scale inhibitors containing phosphorus have the best achievement. However, many phosphorus-based inhibitors participate in the eutrophication process as nutrients. Due to this environmental problem, green scale inhibitors have been used to prevent the formation of scale. This paper summarized the synthesis of the most widely researched green scale inhibitors in recent years, such as polyaspartic acid (PASP), polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA), plant extracts and their derivatives, as well as other new inhibitors. Moreover, this paper reviews their mechanism and the progress of application research in recent years.

Abstract:Significant concerns with corrosion might occur in terms of assurance, the natural world, and financial damage. One key piece of innovation toward preventing metallic corrosion includes the application of corrosion inhibitors. The polymer inhibitions of corrosion constitute the most promising areas for advancing of new corrosion inhibitors because they have more excellent adherence locations, higher temperature rebellion, versatility, viscosity, and superior filming capacity than smaller molecule corrosion inhibitors. The present review examines the development of natural and synthetic polymers for anti-corrosion agents. Such polymeric anti-corrosion agents work very well at inhibiting corrosion and do not need a high molecular weight. At this point, we examine the published literature on polymeric corrosion inhibitors and discuss how to improve them for use in the industry.

Abstract:Aggressive salts contained in formation waters accelerate the processes of corrosion and salt deposition in oilfield equipment, which leads to unforeseen accidents, contamination of soil and groundwater with harmful substances, as a result of which the ecological balance of the environment is disrupted. Corrosion and scaling that occur during oil production create difficulties during the operation of wells, and, consequently, increase the cost of produced oil.This article covers the results of studies concerning two compositions developed from technical phosphatide - an emulsion obtained by hydration of vegetable oils, as well as sodium hexametaphosphate, ammophos and polypropylene glycol bottoms. When vegetable oils are treated with water and steam (hydration process), the phospholipids contained in the oils combine with water and are released in the form of precipitates called phosphatide emulsions. Such emulsions consist of 45–75 % water, and the rest is phospholipids in the vegetable oil sediment.Technical phosphatides are a group of esters that contain a phosphoric acid residue associated with an amino alcohol. They are natural surfactants and are non-toxic.Preliminary studies have shown that each of the chemical compounds included in the developed reagents has certain inhibitory properties, but when formulated, these compounds provide a synergistic effect.Based on the results of laboratory studies, it was found that at an optimal concentration of reagents of 200 mg/l, the developed compositions provide protection of equipment from corrosion destruction by 94–95 %, and from scaling by 87–88 %. The developed mixed-type inhibitors at optimal concentrations equally effectively inhibit both cathodic and anodic processes on the electrode.The use of these inhibitors leads to the prevention of steel corrosion in the two-phase oil-electrolyte system, as well as to a significant reduction in the rate of scaling.The proposed new compositions can be used in oil wells and in-field transport systems, as well as in reservoir pressure maintenance systems to protect against corrosion and scale deposits.Field tests of the corrosion inhibitor were carried out in deep pumping wells at the Bibieybatneft oil and gas production department. Tests have shown that as a result of using the inhibitor, the protective effect at a concentration of 200 mg/l was 89–90 %, and the effect of salt deposition was 70 %.

Abstract:An anti-corrosion inhibitor is one of the most useful methods to prevent metal corrosion toward different media. In comparison with small molecular inhibitors, a polymeric inhibitor can integrate more adsorption groups and generate a synergetic effect, which has been widely used in industry and become a hot topic in academic research. Generally, both natural polymer-based inhibitors and synthetic polymeric inhibitors have been developed. Herein, we summarize the recent progress of polymeric inhibitors during the last decade, especially the structure design and application of synthetic polymeric inhibitor and related hybrid/composite.

The Inhibitory Effect of Low Phosphorus and Low Molecular Weight Terpolymer Scale Inhibitor on Calcium Scale in Oilfields

Abstract:The study utilized itaconic acid (IA), N‐hydroxyethyl acrylamide (HEAA), and sodium hypophosphite (SHP) as starting materials for a free radical polymerization process. This process resulted in creating a new type of low‐phosphorus terpolymer scale inhibitor called P(IA‐HEAA‐SHP). Its primary application was as an effective scale inhibitor to block CaCO3 and CaSO4. FTIR, 1H‐NMR, and 13C‐NMR were used to characterize the synthesized copolymer structures, and it was confirmed that the synthesized products had the desired structures. The synthesis conditions have been optimized using the static scale inhibition approach, which involved adjusting the monomer ratio, initiator dosage, and reaction time. This resulted in the synthesis of polymeric scale inhibitors with outstanding scale inhibition properties. Additionally, GPC was employed to examine the correlation of the molecular weight of the polymers with their scale inhibition properties at various reaction times. The results showed that when the monomer ratio n(IA):n(HEAA) = 1.5:1, the SHP dosage mass fraction was 15%, the ammonium persulfate initiator dosage was 10%, the reaction temperature was 90°C, and the reaction time was 4 h. At a measured dose of 30 mg L−1, the scale inhibition impact on CaCO3 is 86.63%, while the scale inhibition impact on CaSO4 is 96.83%. The thermal properties of the copolymers, the crystal structure, and the micro‐morphology of the scale samples were analyzed by TGA, XRD, and SEM, and the scale inhibition mechanism was discussed in conjunction with the zeta potential analysis.

Abstract:Water-based cutting fluid has a broad application area and a hundred year history, but its poor corrosion inhibition and anti-rust ability limit its further promotion. Adding corrosion inhibitors can effectively solve the above problems. However, no review papers are available on cutting fluid corrosion inhibitors, and their mechanism, suitability, and performance influencing factors have not been revealed. This article discusses cutting fluid corrosion inhibitors to fill the gaps in theoretical research and industrial applications. Inorganic matters are initially used in corrosion inhibition due to their strong oxidizing properties. Therefore, the film formation mechanism of inorganic corrosion inhibitor oxide and precipitation film is first analyzed, and the applications in corrosive medium are summarized. Given that inorganic corrosion inhibitors are not environmentally friendly and expensive, organic corrosion inhibitors are currently used as replacement. Thus, the film formation mechanism of different organic corrosion inhibitors adsorption film is analyzed, and their suitability with metals is determined. The influence of molecular structure and temperature on their corrosion inhibition effect is also studied, and the performance of inorganic and organic corrosion inhibitors is compared. However, single organic corrosion inhibitors are greatly affected by metal surface state, temperature, and immersion time. Therefore, the synergistic film formation after the compounding of organic and inorganic corrosion inhibitors is analyzed. In addition, the influence rate of concentration, molecular structure, and temperature on corrosion inhibition performance is revealed, and a matching database of corrosion inhibitor type and metal type in cutting is established. Finally, in view of the limitations of cutting fluid corrosion inhibitors, the establishment of a molecular dynamics model of corrosion inhibitor failure and accelerates corrosion and the development of general-purpose green additives based on the molecular design and physical and chemical analysis of the suitability of corrosion inhibitor and base liquid are prospected.

Abstract:Corrosion inhibitors find ubiquitous application across diverse sectors to formulate robust coatings and chemical compounds. Serving as pivotal additives in compositions, they play a vital role in crafting coatings for circulating water systems, water supply networks, oil refining, petrochemical industries, and power plants. Incorporation extends to fuels, oils, lubricants, and construction materials. In industries oxidation inhibitors is particularly high as chemical, electrochemical, petrochemical, and gas, as well as in water supply networks and circulating water systems. The utilization of inhibitors obviates the necessity for treating metal surfaces with protective enamels and mastics. Effectively preventing oxidation involves the introduction of chemical contributions into aggressive ecology, thereby neutralizing or retarding the oxidation processes. This article explores the anti-oxidation properties of inhibitors in compositions related to St-3 steel. The study includes factors such as the pH of the medium, the nature and concentration of phosphate in compositions simulating reservoir water under stationary and aerated conditions. Investigation methods as potentiometry and photocolorimetry used in research. Experimental data, quantitative parameters of the oxidation process, oxidation rate, and degree of protection, depth index, and stability of the film formed were determined. These indicators were assessed on the oxidation resistance scale relative to steel. Analysis of the data shows that out of 63 compositions, seven systems demonstrate the most significant protective effects, with five containing sodium orthophosphate and two containing sodium hydroorthophosphate. Abstract:The promising eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors based on natural polymers are analyzed. The anticorrosion effectiveness of biopolymers, which in particular include, chitin, starch and inulin, widely used in industry in various corrosive environments, is considered. The main methods of researching the inhibitory efficiency of natural polymers on the surface of metals and alloys are described, including gravimetry, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, adsorption isotherms, and quantum chemical approaches. The effectiveness of corrosion inhibition by polymers is influenced mainly by their concentration, molecular weight and structure, and the protection mechanism is generally caused by the adsorption due to the presence of polar functional groups in them. These functional groups cause the blocking of the corrosive medium access to the metal surface. The protective properties of natural gums and the main mechanisms of their inhibition of carbon steels and aluminum alloys corrosion are considered. The data on the anti-corrosion effect of inhibitory synergistic compositions based on natural polymers, which are characterized by the synergism of the components, are given. The creation of synergistic compositions is an effective way to improve the protective effect of polymers, to reduce their concentration and to diversify applications in corrosive environments.

Abstract:CaCO3 morphology before and after scal inhibitor application. To reduce the economic loss caused by scale formation and corrosion of equipment and pipelines, a low phosphorus polymer scale inhibitor is synthesized and characterized, the ability of the polymer to mitigate the calcium scale and the influences of operating conditions on CaCO3 scale are investigated by static tests. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies are performed to understand the morphological changes of the scales in the presence of the polymer. The interaction between polymer molecules and calcite crystal surface is studied by molecular dynamics simulation. The synthesized polymer is compared with the commercial product such as hydrolysis polymaleic acid (HPMA), polyacrylic acid (PAA), and 1‐hydroxy ethylidene‐1,1‐diphosphonic acid (HEDP). The experimental results show that the polymer shows better inhibition of calcium scale than the commercial product. The scale inhibition efficiency of the polymer is 92% at 10 mg/L for CaCO3 scale, 83% at 14 mg/L for Ca3(PO4)2 scale, and 98% at 6 mg/L for CaSO4 scale. SEM and XRD analysis show that the polymer induces the conversion of CaCO3 from calcite to arachite and crystal. The interaction of the polymer with both 104 and 1–10 calcite crystal surfaces are more stable than that of commercial product. The experimental results are in good agreement with those of molecular dynamics simulation.

Abstract:ABSTRACT To investigate the effects of phospholipase D (PLD) on low-concentration hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced growth and migration in alveolar epithelial A549 cells, the cells were exposed to H2O2 (3–100 μM) for 12–48 hours, cell proliferation was determined by MTT assay and cell migration was tested by a modified epithelial wound healing assay. We found that one bolus of H2O2 (10–100 μM) did not affect proliferation, but significantly stimulated migration (143–161% of control) after a 12-hour exposure. Pretreatment with the antioxidants catalase (1000 U/ml), N-acetyl-cysteine (2 mM), or edaravone (10 μM) abolished the migration induced by 30 μM H2O2; the PLD inhibitor 1-butanol (0.5%) also attenuated H2O2-induced migration to the control level; while exogenous phosphatidic acid (PA) (10−7–10−4 M) mimicked the effects of PLD activation and induced migration in a dose-dependent manner. We suggest that the alveolar epithelial cell migration induced by exposure to low concentrations of H2O2 benefits tissue repair during acute lung injury (ALI) and PLD is involved in the underlying mechanism.

Abstract:A new corrosion-scale inhibitor composed of citric acid(CA)/ hydroxy ethylidene diphosphonic acid(HEDP)/polyitaconic acid-styrene sulfonic acid (IA-SSA) copolymer exhibited a good inhibition efficiency on corrosion and scale-forming, it can be used in circulating cooling water systems. The rate of corrosion inhibition and anti-scaling (calcium carbonate) rate is more than 95% when the temperature is 70℃,ρ(Ca 2+ )300mg/L and the concentration of inhibitor is 100mg/L. Scale inhibition is resulted from crystal distortion and charge repulsion. The results of SEM and AES analysis demonstrated that the corrosion inhibition effects are due to the formation of thin protective film (400~500) on the surface of metal, which can inhibit corrosion effectively.

Abstract:In oil and gas industry operations, scale deposition on the surface and subsurface production equipment can cause different problems such as formation damage, loss in production, pressure reductions, and premature failure of down hole equipment. Due to geochemical processes between injection water, connate water and rock, the complex composition of reservoir fluids make it difficult to control the inorganic scale formation. Carbonate (calcium), sulfide (iron, zinc), and sulfate (calcium, barium, strontium) scales are more common in oilfield applications. The scale formation depends on several factors that include, but not limited to, temperature, pressures, solution saturation and hydrodynamic behaviour of the flow. This paper reviews different types of scales that are common in oil and gas production operations, their sources and formation mechanisms. The focus of this review is on the different chemicals that are used for the removal of different scales. Hydrochloric acid is one of the classical chemicals used since for most of the mineral scales are soluble in HCl. However, HCl is not environmentally-friendly and causes corrosion and could be very expensive particularly in high-temperature conditions due to the need of using many additives to reduce corrosion. This review discusses several alternatives to HCl that are more environment-friendly in removing oilfield scale deposits. These alternatives are mainly organic acids and chelating agents which have been successfully applied in different fields.

Abstract:Copolymer scale inhibitors are extensively applied in circulating water. This paper is a review on the progress in the application and preparation of the copolymer scale inhibitors. They can be divided into acrylic acid, maleic acid, maleic-acrylic acid, sulphonic acid and phosphor-containing polymer etc. Copolymer inhibitors, represented by sulphonic acid and phosphor-containing ones, are the water treatment agent that is developing very fast recently. Finally,It was suggested, as to copolymer scale inhibitor research and development in the future, that basic research be enhanced, product types diversifide. The biodegradable green scale inhibitor without phosphorus and nitrogen should be given priority to developing.

Abstract:In the oil and gas industry, the presence of aggressive fluids and gases can cause serious corrosion problems. Multiple solutions have been introduced to the industry to minimize corrosion occurrence probability in recent years. They include cathodic protection, utilization of advanced metallic grades, injection of corrosion inhibitors, replacement of the metal parts with composite solutions, and deposition of protective coatings. This paper will review the advances and developments in the design of corrosion protection solutions. The publication highlights crucial challenges in the oil and gas industry to be solved upon the development of corrosion protection methods. According to the stated challenges, existing protective systems are summarized with emphasis on the features that are essential for oil and gas production. Qualification of corrosion protection performance based on international industrial standards will be depicted in detail for each type of corrosion protection system. Forthcoming challenges for the engineering of next-generation materials for corrosion mitigation are discussed to highlight the trends and forecasts of emerging technology development. We will also discuss the advances in nanomaterial and smart material development, enhanced ecological regulations, and applications of complex multifunctional solutions for corrosion mitigation which have become of great importance in recent decades.

Abstract:The research topic deals with one of the important problems that the oil and gas sector suffers from, which is represented by corrosion, as the corrosion of metals annually causes large losses in production as a result of stimulating oil wells using hot HCl solutions, which causes the occurrence of corrosion phenomenon in the well bottom tools, pipes and casing. In addition, a group of organic and inorganic acids and surfactants are used in well stimulation processes. In order to reduce the violent attack of the acid solution on the N80 mild steel casing materials and pipes, during the pickling process inhibitors are added to the acid medium, and to avoid the complexity of the inhibition process in the oil and gas fields, which requires organic inhibitors within the green chemistry depending on the nature of the work field such as pipelines and equipment, recovery wells, refineries, etc. Organic acids and acidic gases such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide complicate the well inhibition problem. Corrosion problems in the oil industry must be dealt with by considering various factors. Acids used in stimulation, the nature and type of reservoir rocks, and oil well equipment, whose operating conditions include casings and tubes, and these form part of the factors affecting corrosion. Thus, it needs to study each case as it is before determining the final opinion regarding the alternative materials. No suitable material can be found to survive the attack of corrosion. The designers and operators of the oil industry must take into account many serious economic and technical problems, the most important and most dangerous of which is the phenomenon of corrosion that is characteristic of the oil industry that deals with highly volatile and sometimes toxic materials and transported by pipelines over long distances and stored in huge warehouses in addition to because it requires a complex operational process that requires high heat and pressure, so if this equipment is so worn out that it is unable to withstand these harsh conditions, then there is no doubt that explosions may occur, which may be accompanied by fires, and sometimes their effect reaches the neighboring equipment and sometimes the entire production unit.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the selection and application of scale inhibitor by studying the problem of pipeline scaling in geothermal well development. Adding scale inhibitor can effectively reduce the treatment cost and achieve a good scale resistance effect, but the commonly used polyaspartic acid scale inhibitor has problems such as poor scale inhibition effect and large use limitations. Therefore, a new modified polyaspartic acid scale inhibitor (His-Tyr-SA-PASP) was prepared using polysuccinimide (PSI) as the raw material and histidine (His), tyrosine (Tyr), and sulfonic acid (SA) as the modification reagent. When the dosage of His-Tyr-SA-PASP was 8 mg/L, the scale inhibition rate of CaCO3 was 94.40%. In addition, the scale inhibition effect of His-Tyr-SA-PASP on CaCO3 was better than that of PASP. At the same time, under the condition of a static experiment at 75 °C, according to the ion concentration of water samples in different scale zones, this paper also identified the ratio of four composite scale inhibitors. When the dosage of compound scale inhibitor was 100 mg/L, Sodium of Polyaspartic Acid–Diethylene Triamine Penta (Methylene Phosphonic Acid)–2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4-Tricarboxylic Acid–Amino Trimethylene Phosphonic Acid–Copolymer of Maleic and Acrylic Acid = (10:10:5:1:9), (15:10:5:2.5:2.5), (12.5:5:10:1:6.5), and (15:5:10:4:1) and the scale inhibition rate was more than 95%. Under the condition of a dynamic experiment, the optimized composite scale inhibitor still showed a scale inhibition rate of more than 90%. It provides a useful reference for the practical application of water treatment in geothermal wells and has the prospect of industrial application.

Abstract:The use of corrosion inhibitors can effectively avoid the corrosion of metals and alloys, but the conventional organic/inorganic corrosion inhibitors have certain toxic and side effects and environmental pollution problems (including some expensive toxic reagents and catalysts), prompting researchers to turn their attention to the research of water-soluble polymer corrosion inhibitors with green environment friendly and low pollution. This paper reviews the action mechanism of polymer inhibitors, the research status of natural polymer inhibitors (chitosan-based inhibitors, cellulose and its derivatives inhibitors, other carbohydrate inhibitors, protein inhibitors) and synthetic polymer inhibitors (epoxy resin inhibitors, polyethylene glycol inhibitors, conductive polymer inhibitors), The purpose is to provide some reference for the development of eco-friendly metal coatings.

Abstract:The presence of formation water and the treatment methods (both water flooding and chemical treatments) employed during exploration and production operations have great potential for mineral scale formation. Scale deposition poses a lot of serious threat in field production and it is a menace to production flow assurance, which in turn reduces the production flow resulting in production losses. Although oilfield scale deposit is a long standing problem, oil and gas industry are facing new challenges in managing scale deposits created during offshore exploration activities in ultra-deepwater and other harsh environments. Traditional onshore chemistries for scale inhibitions are not viable under HT/HP conditions thereby making flow assurance a critical issue for deepwater project development. An ideal management program maximizes hydrocarbon production and minimizes the cost of scale deposits control, thereby maintaining the economic viability of the operations. This paper reviews various types of mineral scale deposits as well as the thermodynamics and kinetics prediction of mineral scale formation potentials. Also, the mitigation strategies of oilfield mineral scale deposits and chemical stimulation techniques used in oil industry to improve well productivity are discussed.
