Abstract:This study aimed to compare the opinions of dentists and endocrinologists regarding diabetes mellitus (DM) and periodontitis, and to investigate the possible effects on their practice.Cross-sectional data were collected from 297 endocrinologists and 134 dentists practicing in southern China using two separated questionnaires. Questions were close-ended or Likert-scaled. Statistical analyses were done by descriptive statistics, bivariate and binary logistic regression analysis.Compared with endocrinologists, dentists presented more favorable attitudes for the relationship of DM and periodontitis (P&lt;0.001). 61.2% of dentists reported they would frequently refer patients with severe periodontitis for DM evaluation, while only 26.6% of endocrinologists reported they would frequently advise patients with DM to visit a dentist. Nearly all of the respondents (94.4%) agreed that the interdisciplinary collaboration should be strengthened. The logistic regression analysis exhibited that respondents with more favorable attitudes were more likely to advise a dental visit (P=0.003) or to screen for DM (P=0.006).Endocrinologists and dentists are not equally equipped with the knowledge about the relationship between DM and periodontitis, and there is a wide gap between their practice and the current evidence, especially for endocrinologists. It's urgent to take measures to develop the interdisciplinary education and collaboration among the health care providers.
Effect of X-rays on Thymocytes and Its Modification by Cysteine

Abstract:Summary Sensitivity of rabbit thymocytes to X-irradiation in vitro is decreased by a constant factor over a wide dosage range when cysteine is added to the suspension. Protection depends upon cysteine concentration and time of administration but is not a simple function of the sulfhydryl level. There is a definite postirradiation effect of cysteine which can be accounted for only in part by the persistence of toxic substances in the medium. The relative resistance of packed cells and the failure of cysteine to protect them may be a consequence of hypoxia. It is suggested that the effect of cysteine on irradiated thymic cell suspensions may be a result of competition with cell substrates for oxygen, but that the binding of oxygen per se is not necessarily the decisive event in the protection. The results are discussed in connection with related observations in the intact animal.
Effectiveness of endodontic complexity assessment tool (E-CAT) on the undergraduate students in an endodontic training program and its predictive capability on complications

Abstract:Introduction: Dental students face a number of challenges when it comes to performing root canal treatments (RCTs). The Endodontic Complexity Assessment Tool (E-CAT) was developed to assist dental practitioners in assessing the complexity of RCTs before beginning treatment. Materials and methods: The E-CAT was filled out independently by both the educator and the student. To allow educators to record scores and complexity classes, they transferred their and students' forms to the website https://www.e-cat.uk/. Students began endodontic treatment after learning about the complexity level of the case. The educators were responsible for recording any complications encountered in every case from the outset to 1 month after treatment. Results: A total of 70 students, 33 in fourth and 37 in fifth-grade, were included in the study. In the cases with higher E-CAT scores, complications such as misdiagnosed, faulty access cavity, furca or coronal third perforation, insufficient root canal instrumentation, working length loss, canal blockage, overpreparation, incomplete root canal filling and overfilling were experienced significantly more often compared to the cases with lower E-CAT scores (p < .05). The number of complications (r = .40, p < .001), treatment sessions (r = .44, p < .001), and teacher support (r = .24, p < .001) positively correlated with E-CAT score (p < .05). Conclusion: The E-CAT is an effective tool for assisting dental students in understanding technical challenges, such as complex root canal anatomy and possible complications during treatment. Educators can also use e-CAT to pre-select clinical cases and standardise student training by offering cases of equal complexity.
Case complexity of root canal treatments accepted for training in a secondary care setting assessed by three complexity grading systems: A service evaluation

Abstract:Aims: To evaluate the complexity of root canal treatments accepted for treatment by postgraduate training grades at Cardiff University Dental Hospital (CUDH) using the English Commissioning Standard for Restorative Dentistry (ECS) in comparison with the American Association of Endodontists case complexity form (AAE) and the Restorative Index of Treatment Need (RIOTN). Methodology: Two hundred case records were evaluated using the AAE, RIOTN and ECS scoring systems. Each case received a score from minimal to high complexity (1-3). Examiners were calibrated and inter-examiner reliability calculated using the percentage agreement. Frequency of scores were then compared. Results: Most cases were at level 3 and assessment varied amongst the criteria used (AAE: 99.5%, RIOTN: 65.5% and ECS: 55.5%). The AAE factor 'endodontic treatment history' was largely responsible for differing scores when compared with the RIOTN (78%) and ECS (64%). The RIOTN factor regarding post treatment disease ('endodontic retreatment') was responsible for increased complexity compared with ECS in most cases (74%). The ECS factor 'quality of root filling' was the most common reason (85%) for an increase in complexity compared with RIOTN. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this service evaluation, it was possible to conclude that a high proportion of cases treated by training grades at CUDH were of a high complexity level (level 3) using the three guidelines (ECS, AAE and RIOTN). These cases were appropriate for postgraduate training under various levels of supervision and substantiated by the findings reported here. The factors responsible for a large part of difference in allocation of scores amongst the systems were 'endodontic treatment history', 'root canal retreatment' and 'quality of root filling'.

Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted amongst dentists who were pursuing postgraduates in endodontics (PG Endo) and other branches (PG-OB), specialists from other branches (MDS-OB) and specialists in endodontics (MDS-Endo) in various dental colleges representing East, West, North, South, and Central zones through an e-survey using Google forms. State-wise postgraduate dental college lists were obtained from the Dental Council of India (DCI) website. Using a multistage cluster random sampling method and considering the unanticipated response rate, emails were sent to 2100. A 29-item close-ended questionnaire, framed according to different aspects of endodontic treatment, was used to record the responses. Results: When the distribution of the groups of dentists was compared, the central zone had the highest number of PG-OB (44.2%) and the lowest number of MDS-Endo (8.4%). The electronic apex locator (EAL) method of working length determination has been reported less among MDS-Endo than MDS-OB. The difference between the usage of various methods for working length determination was significant among the different groups in all the zones. (p < 0.0001) Most MDS-Endo preferred the rotary method of instrumentation over the combination method for different zones. The majority of dental practitioners preferred a combination method of instrumentation. Conclusion: Zone-wise comparisons among dentists showed the majority of general dental practitioners preferred the combination method (radiographs and electronic apex locator) for working length determination. Most MDS-Endo preferred the rotary method of instrumentation over the combination method for different zones. All dental practitioners did not so commonly use magnification in all the zones. The single cone technique was the most opted by dental practitioners of all the zones. [A Prevalence Survey of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Use among Endodontic Practitioners].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the clinical application of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) among endodontic practitioners, and to analyze the indications and reasonability of CBCT in the diagnosis and treatment of pulpal and periapical diseases.METHODS:The clinical data were collected from patients who visited the Department of Cariology and Endodontology, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology and underwent CBCT examination from January to December, 2021. The data with their complete clinical information (including clinical records, radiology request forms/reports, two-dimensional and three-dimensional imaging data) were included. Those who underwent CBCT examination for orthodontic or prosthodontics were excluded. The experience and training background of the endodontic specialists, the number of patients treated in the whole year, the objective and region of interest (ROI) of CBCT examination, technical parameters, such as machine type, field of view (FoV) and radiographic reports were collected and analyzed to evaluate the impact on diagnosis. Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare the distribution of CBCT ROI. Chi-squared test and pairwise comparison were used to compare the application of CBCT by endodontic specialists with different clinical experience (senior, middle and junior).RESULTS:In 2021, a total of 3 308 CBCT scans were prescribed by 61 endodontic specialists who treated 34 952 patients throughout the year. 3 218 patients (male ∶female about 1 ∶2) amounting for 10% of the patients treated in the whole year who received CBCT scans with an median age of 35 years (28, 49). Around 98% CBCT examinations were performed after clinical examination and two-dimensional periapical radiographs were taken. The FoV of CBCT scanning less than 10 cm×10 cm accounted for 96% of the total number of the images. Among the 3 308 CBCT scans, 83% of the ROI were in posterior teeth, with a higher number of anterior teeth (Z=-2.278, P < 0.05). Maxillary and mandibular first molars accounted for 35% of the examined teeth. The objectives of CBCT scanning included three aspects: clarifying clinical diagnosis, guiding surgical and non-surgical endodontic treatment (including management of endodontic complications), and outcome assessment, accounting for 1 111 (34%), 1 745 (54%), 311 (10%), respectively. and the others 2%. In the diagnosis process, CBCT was mainly used for the diagnosis of chronic periapical periodontitis, root fracture, root resorption and dental trauma. In the study, 353 CBCT were used in the diagnosis of root fracture, with a positive diagnosis rate of 35% (125/353). 846 CBCT used to reveal the anatomy of the root canal system, of which 297 cases were used to find missed/extra canals after treatment failure, and 58% (171/297) were used to confirm the missed/extra canals. In the management of complications or errors, CBCT was mainly used to assist the diagnosis of perforation and to locate the separated instruments. In the study, 311 CBCT scans were used for outcome assessment, including 240 cases related to non-surgical treatment and 71 cases related to surgical endodontic treatment for follow-up or presence of clinical symptoms, and persistent lesions on 2D films. Among the 61 endodontic specialists who used CBCT, 23 (45%) were with senior experience, 15 (30%) with middle experience, and 23 (25%) with junior experience. The proportion of senior or junior experience prescribing CBCT examination was 10%, higher than that of middle experience (8%, χ12=39.4, χ22=29.1, P < 0.001). The application rate of chief endodontists was 18%, which was higher than that of associate chief endodontists (9%, χ12=139.4, P < 0.001). 31% (1 109/3 308) cases of diagnosis or treatment plans were changed after CBCT was taken.CONCLUSION:Use of CBCT in endodontic practice could provide more clinical information, which is helpful for diagnosis, accurate treatment and prognosis evaluation.

Abstract:Endodontic diseases are a kind of chronic infectious oral disease. Common endodontic treatment concepts are based on the removal of inflamed or necrotic pulp tissue and the replacement by gutta-percha. However, it is very essential for endodontic treatment to debride the root canal system and prevent the root canal system from bacterial reinfection after root canal therapy (RCT). Recent research, encompassing bacterial etiology and advanced imaging techniques, contributes to our understanding of the root canal system's anatomy intricacies and the technique sensitivity of RCT. Success in RCT hinges on factors like patients, infection severity, root canal anatomy, and treatment techniques. Therefore, improving disease management is a key issue to combat endodontic diseases and cure periapical lesions. The clinical difficulty assessment system of RCT is established based on patient conditions, tooth conditions, root canal configuration, and root canal needing retreatment, and emphasizes pre-treatment risk assessment for optimal outcomes. The findings suggest that the presence of risk factors may correlate with the challenge of achieving the high standard required for RCT. These insights contribute not only to improve education but also aid practitioners in treatment planning and referral decision-making within the field of endodontics.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study was a retrospective cross-sectional study of the Polish subpopulation, performed to evaluate the quality of endodontic treatment (ET) and the condition of the periapical tissues of permanent teeth based on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Material and methods: The retrospective study included a group of patients who underwent CBCT at the University Dental Clinic of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. An endodontically treated tooth index (ETTI) was used to evaluate ET. Once apical periodontitis was recognised, the size, extent, and ratio of adjacent anatomical structures were assessed using the complex periapical index (COPI). Results: Analysis of the CBCT images showed that ET was performed in 9.9% of the teeth examined, of which 52.7% of the canals were treated correctly, while 28.1% of the root canals were found to be underfilled, 6.8% were overfilled, 9.3% of the root canals were not obturated at all, and in 3.1% of the teeth examined, the filling material was only visible in the pulp chamber. Apical periodontitis was observed in 6% of all teeth examined, while the percentage of teeth following ET was 38.5%. Conclusions: The quality of the ET provided to the Polish subpopulation is unsatisfactory. Lack of root canal filling homogeneity is a significant risk factor for ET failure. Improper ET and poor quality of crown restoration after ET have an impact on the increased risk of occurrence, size, degree of root coverage, and extent of inflammatory periapical lesions in relation to adjacent anatomical structures.
Prevalence Studies on Root Canal Anatomy Using Cone-beam Computed Tomographic Imaging: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Introduction: In the literature, several prevalence studies on root canal anatomy using cone-beam computed tomographic technology are currently available although their results remain disperse. This systematic review aimed to appraise and combine, under strict criteria conditions, selected prevalence studies in order to comprehend the distribution of root canal configuration types among different populations. Methods: This systematic review was registered in PROSPERO. Six electronic databases were accessed, and the studies were selected according to a predefined inclusion/exclusion criteria. References of the collected studies and 3 peer-reviewed endodontic journals were hand searched. The authors of the selected studies were contacted for additional information. All eligible studies were submitted to a scientific merit evaluation by 2 evaluators independently, who also reached a final consensus for each study score using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tool for prevalence studies. Results: Fifty-two studies from 28 different countries including 102,610 teeth and presenting a Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tool average score of 80.5% were included in this review. Overall, results showed a wide prevalence range of the second mesiobuccal canal in maxillary first and second molars but also a high prevalence of single-rooted configuration in maxillary first premolars and mandibular second molars and 3-rooted morphology in the mandibular first molar of Asian populations. Conclusions: The included studies showed a global tendency for a particular morphology in some groups of teeth, whereas others showed diversity in specific anatomic types among different populations.
Assessment of Periodontitis Risk Factors in Endodontically Treated Teeth: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:The aim of the study was to collect data about the prevalence and risk factors of apical periodontitis in a population of endodontically treated patients. The study group included 151 patients (52 males, 99 females; mean age 48.36 ± 15.708 yrs.) with 391 endodontically treated teeth (mean follow-up of 5.25 ± 1.759 yrs.). According to the initial tooth diagnosis, root-filled teeth were divided into Group A, root-filled teeth treated for pulpitis or for the purpose of prosthetic pulpectomies (vital pulp group), and Group B, root-filled teeth with non-vital pulp (necrotic pulp). Clinical and radiographic evaluation of the root and its periapical area were performed to establish the success/failure of endodontic therapy, the quality of the root canal fillings (length, density, taper), and coronal restoration. The presence of recurrent caries, periodontal pathology, or endo-periodontal lesions were also recorded. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine the risk factors for apical periodontitis and calculate their odds ratios (ORs). For the root-filled vital pulp tooth group, the highest risks for apical periodontitis are associated with inadequate homogeneity (OR 30.938), periodontitis (OR 9.226), and over-filling (OR 8.800). For the root-filled non-vital pulp tooth group, the highest risks are associated with periodontitis (OR 4.235) and age over 60 yrs. (OR 4.875). For the necrotic pulp tooth group, multivariate analysis identified an age > 60 yrs., filled molars, intracanal posts, poor coronal restoration quality, under-filling, and periodontitis as significant combined risk factors. Inadequate root canal filling and periodontitis in both groups were risk factors associated with most cases of apical periodontitis. Other risk factors include age > 60 yrs., poor coronal restoration quality, and the presence of intracanal posts in root-filled teeth with necrotic pulp.

The Prevalence of Comorbidities in Individuals with Periodontitis in a Private Periodontal Referral Practice

Abstract:Objectives: Periodontitis (PD) patients frequently suffer from comorbidities, necessitating increased attention to disease management and monitoring. The aim of this study is to describe the prevalence and patterns of comorbidities among patients with PD in a private periodontal referral practice. Methods: This study involved 3171 adults with PD. Data on demographics, lifestyle, number of teeth, pockets of size ≥ 6 mm, bleeding on probing, periodontal inflammatory surface area, and comorbidities were extracted from electronic patient records. Descriptive and statistical analyses, including t-tests, chi-square tests, cluster analysis, binomial logistic regression analysis, and hypergraph network analysis, were performed. Results: Among this PD population, 47% had a comorbidity, and 20% had multimorbidity (≥2 diseases). Based on the disease patterns, two distinct clusters emerged: Cluster 1 was dominated by respiratory tract conditions (asthma, lung disease, and allergic rhinitis), allergies, and hypothyroidism, while Cluster 2 primarily included cardiometabolic diseases (angina pectoris, hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM), and hyperthyroidism). The hypergraph network analysis for those with multimorbidity identified two main groups: (i) pulmonary conditions (lung disease, asthma, allergic rhinitis, and allergies) and (ii) cardiometabolic disorders (hypertension, myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular disease, and DM). Hypertension, allergies, and allergic rhinitis showed high centrality, serving as central nodes frequently co-occurring with other diseases. Conclusions: Nearly half of the PD patients in a private periodontal referral practice were found to have comorbidities, primarily clustering into cardiometabolic and respiratory tract diseases. These findings, based on real-world data, should encourage dental professionals to integrate systemic conditions into their care strategies. They could also guide policymakers and practitioners in developing evidence-based approaches to mitigate the reciprocal negative effects of PD and comorbidities.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Dentistry is a complex field that utilizes both theoretical and practical knowledge along with a distinct coordination of the hand, brain, and eye of an individual, forming a major part of endodontic therapy. Assessing the understanding and practical knowledge of undergraduates from time to time is essential in evaluating the success of the undergraduate education system. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the challenges that are associated with endodontic therapy and are faced by undergraduate students at College of Dentistry, Qassim University. Methodology: Ninety-seven undergraduates who had completed their preclinical training and had done endodontic treatments were included in this questionnaire-based study. The Chi square test and Fisher's exact test have been used to determine whether or not there is a significant difference on a categorical scale between two or more groups of study parameters.RESULTS: According to our results, de-roofing of the pulp chamber and recognizing the canal orifices are the two areas that need more consideration. The gender-wise difference in the challenges faced by the students while performing the majority of steps during endodontic treatment was found to be insignificant. However, a significant difference was noted in relation to the complete deroofing of the pulp chamber (p-value=0.04) and locating the canal orifices (p-value=0.04). Moreover, fifth year students rarely faced difficulties in performing anesthesia and rubber dam placement, whereas fourth year students faced difficulties in both procedures.CONCLUSION: The study concludes that de-roofing the pulp chamber and identifying the orifices of canals are two areas where more attention should be given while training undergraduate dental students.
Assessment of Complications in Dental Implant Surgery

Abstract:Background: Dental implant surgery has become a standard procedure for replacing missing teeth, boasting high success rates. However, complications can occur, affecting treatment outcomes. Understanding the nature and frequency of these complications is essential for optimizing patient care. Objective: To assess the prevalence and types of complications associated with dental implant surgery through retrospective research. Methods: Patient records were reviewed, focusing on demographics, medical history, surgical details, implant characteristics, and postoperative complications. Complications were categorized, and statistical analysis was performed to identify associations. Results: Among 150 cases, infection (15.3%), implant failure (8.0%), and peri-implantitis (12.0%) were the most common complications. Complication rates varied significantly across age groups (P < 0.05), with younger patients experiencing higher rates. Conclusion: Complications in dental implant surgery, including infection, implant failure, and peri-implantitis, are prevalent. Age appears to influence complication rates. Strategies to mitigate complications and optimize treatment outcomes are crucial.

Abstract:Methylation of the cytosine base in DNA, DNA methylation, is an essential epigenetic mark in mammals that contributes to the regulation of transcription. Several advances have been made in this area in recent years, leading to a leap forward in our understanding of how this pathway contributes to gene regulation during embryonic development, and the functional consequences of its perturbation in human disease. Critical to these advances is a comprehension of the genomic distribution of modified cytosine bases in unprecedented detail, drawing attention to genomic regions beyond gene promoters. In addition, we have a more complete understanding of the multifactorial manner by which DNA methylation influences gene regulation at the molecular level, and which genes rely directly on the DNA methylome for their normal transcriptional regulation. It is becoming apparent that a major role of DNA modification is to act as a relatively stable, and mitotically heritable, template that contributes to the establishment and maintenance of chromatin states. In this regard, interplay is emerging between DNA methylation and the PcG (Polycomb group) proteins, which act as evolutionarily conserved mediators of cell identity. In the present paper we review these aspects of DNA methylation, and discuss how a multifunctional view of DNA modification as an integral part of chromatin organization is influencing our understanding of this epigenetic mark's contribution to transcriptional regulation.
Management of Cardiovascular Disease Patients with Periodontitis Requiring Dental Treatment - A KAP Study among Dental Students

Abstract:Background: It is frequently observed that dental students require so many consents to manage medically compromised patients, especially cardiovascular patients with periodontitis requiring dental treatment. Aims and objectives: The present study aimed to assess the dental students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding the management of cardiovascular disease (CVD) patients with periodontitis requiring dental treatment. Material and methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted among 611 dental undergraduate and postgraduate students (branches of Periodontology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine and Radiology, Endodontics, Prosthodontics, and Public Health and Dentistry) of central Gujrat. Self-administered structured questionnaires with 23 questions were distributed in pen-and-paper physical format. Statistical analysis for descriptive statistics like frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, confidence interval, one-way analysis of variance, post hoc test for multiple comparisons, Fisher's exact test, and Pearson's correlation has been done by MS Excel and STATA/IC-13. Results: As per the post hoc test, both groups of students have significantly different knowledge (-4.20210*, P = 0.028) and their practices (0.68632, P = 0.968) but no significant difference between their attitudes (-6.22828, P = 0.089). According to the Pearson correlation test, a weak positive/no relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and practice is reported in both study groups. There is a weak positive relation between knowledge and attitudes (0.270) and between knowledge and practices (0.121), and a similar relationship between their attitudes and practices (0.172) was observed in both groups. Conclusion: Correct knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding dental management of CVD patients with periodontitis can reduce medical consent to improve the treatment quality of dental students.

Abstract:Background Endodontics is considered as one of the most difficult and stressful disciplines in dentistry. This might be due to the complex anatomical variations, recent advances in equipment, technology, materials and lack of self-confidence. Objective To determine the self-confidence level among the intern dentists in performing endodontic procedures from six different colleges of Kathmandu University, Nepal. Method A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 145 intern dentists. The online questionnaire regarding confidence level (5 point Likert scale) in different endodontic procedures and difficulty level (easy, ok and difficult) with respect to teeth was distributed. For descriptive purpose, frequency and percentage for each response were calculated. Result Dental interns were confident in performing majority of the normal endodontic procedures, however, they showed less confidence in performing difficult steps like rubber dam application for anterior (74, 51%) and posterior tooth (91, 62.7%), use of electronic apex locator (89, 61.4%), using rotary files (114, 78.6%), management of flare-ups (86, 59.4%), assessment of quality of post-endodontic treatment (85, 58.5%), recall periods (75, 51.6%) and performing post and core (82, 56.6%). Likewise, upper first molars (84, 57.9%) and second molars (104, 71.7%) were found to be the most difficult teeth to treat. Conclusion It can be concluded that majority of the dental interns were confident in performing basic endodontic procedures, however, they were found to have low confidence in performing difficult steps. Further training and exposure should be incorporated to increase their confidence level.

Abstract:Introduction: Students' perspectives regarding their educational experiences play an essential role in curriculum planning and to evaluate effectiveness of dental courses being taught. The current study was aimed to assess the undergraduate dental students' self-perceived confidence level while performing different stages of endodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: A 30-item e-questionnaire was sent to 96 4 th and 5 th year dental students. The students were requested to grade their self-confidence level regarding various stages of endodontic treatment. Moreover, questions related to endodontics discipline difficulty level and students' preferences of file systems were also asked. Data were statistically analyzed. Results: The response rate was 94.8%. The students reported the highest confidence level for treating maxillary anterior teeth (4.39 ± 0.94) and the lowest confidence score was noted for maxillary molars (2.75 ± 1.00). Regarding different stages of endodontic treatment, students exhibited the highest confidence level for rubber dam placement (4.43 ± 0.70) while the lowest confidence was documented for managing inter-appointment flare-up (3.45 ± 0.92). A significant association was noted between the level of the academic year and stages of endodontic treatment for the items related to root canal obturation ( P = 0.004) and restoration of endodontically treated teeth ( P = 0.01). Considering various endodontic indications, 82.4% of the students were confident/very confident while treating the patients with irreversible pulpitis. Contrary to this, the students were least confident while managing the teeth with immature apices (16.5%). Conclusion: Undergraduate dental students exhibited higher confidence for performing different stages of basic endodontic treatment. Conversely, they reported lower confidence for carrying out more complex procedures.
A multi‐national survey‐based evaluation of undergraduate/predoctoral endodontic education

Abstract:Aim To evaluate the current status of endodontic education and assessment at an undergraduate/predoctoral level in dental schools worldwide. Methodology The current survey comprised a 50‐item online questionnaire related to undergraduate endodontic education. The project leaders emailed the survey's details to faculty members responsible for endodontic teaching at one dental school in every country to seek their willingness to participate in the survey. After the faculty members accepted, the survey details were sent to participants along with the survey link. Simple descriptive statistics were used to represent the data. Results Amongst the 44 faculty members from different countries who agreed to participate, 36 completed the survey. Endodontic training starts in 50% of dental schools from the third year of the curriculum. Each dental school employs a diverse range of educational methods. During pre‐clinical training, 19.4% of the participating dental schools used only natural teeth. Stainless‐steel hand instruments, syringe irrigation with a needle, resin‐based sealer and the cold lateral compaction technique are the most frequently used in pre‐clinical and clinical training. A significant percentage of dental institutions necessitate that students treat a predetermined quantity of canals or teeth throughout their pre‐clinical and clinical education. Dental institutions conduct formative, summative or a combination of the formative and summative throughout the clinical and pre‐clinical phases of endodontic training. Conclusions According to the data collected from this survey, there are considerable variations in the curriculum for undergraduate/predoctoral endodontic programmes amongst the surveyed dental schools. Pre‐clinical and clinical education should integrate a larger array of modern tools and procedures.
