Abstract:Purpose This paper synthesises peer-reviewed published journal articles on augmented reality in retail settings to ascertain the current foci of academic research in this nascent area and develop a conceptual framework to form the basis for a future research agenda. Design/methodology/approach Thematic analysis was conducted on a sample of 76 papers published between 1997 and 2020 identified through a systematic search of high quality peer-reviewed papers. Findings Three major research avenues and theoretical bases emerged: AR adoption-based factors with technology acceptance models, AR user experience design and features that influence consumer behaviour, and AR shopping experience and value theory. The resultant S-O-R-based conceptual framework highlights the functional and experiential elements needed for an effective consumer AR experience, which could be implemented by retailers seeking to engage consumers with an augmented shopping experience and make AR applications financially viable. Originality/value This is the first systematic literature review on AR in retail settings to include multiple disciplinary perspectives (HCI and marketing/management) and research methodologies.

Abstract:Recent advances in Augmented Reality (AR) technologies have led to a growing interest in their application for marketing strategy and practice – what we term Augmented Reality Marketing (ARM). However, despite emerging publications on the subject, managers and academics struggle to articulate how ARM delivers experiences that are valuable to customers in a way that is different from other marketing approaches. In this article, we review the emerging literature, and define ARM as a customer-facing interface for the application of digital marketing technologies in physical settings. Rooted in a class of ‘situated cognition’ theories from social psychology, we identify a unique set of digital affordances which ARM offers beyond extant marketing approaches in traditional media. By drawing on the key conceptual building blocks of situated cognition theory, we develop a framework of ARM experiences to synthesize current research and applications, and to suggest directions for future research.

Abstract:<span>Driven by the rapid technological development and adoption of augmented reality (AR) in retail, academic research has grown rapidly. Our purpose is to understand the reasons why consumers use augmented reality in retail and what outcomes retailers can expect. This study presents a systematic literature review and summarizes the current empirical knowledge on consumer behavior with AR in retail. This topic remains scattered between various literature streams showing that the potential of AR to create value for consumers lays in its ability to generate utilitarian and hedonic value, to improve decision-making, and to enhance personalization of the virtual self. Then, this study warns about negative effects of AR usage. The contribution is a systematic literature review and a conceptual framework covering the most important consumer behaviors with AR and their brand-related, transactional, and technology-related outcomes. In addition, this paper adopts a holistic view to propose future research directions and emphasize the need for more research on social augmented reality.</span>

Abstract:Purpose A current technological trend, which has gained even more traction recently due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is the use of augmented reality (AR) in shopping environments. AR is addressing contemporary challenges rooted in online shopping (e.g. in terms of experientiality and try-on) and is fundamentally reshaping consumers' experiences. The purpose of this study is to provide a synthesized and structured overview of the state-of-the-art research focused on AR shopping. Design/methodology/approach The authors conduct a systematic literature review of the empirical academic corpus focused on shopping via AR technology. Findings The review reveals the diverse psychological (cognitive, affective, and social) as well as behavioral outcomes related to the use of AR in the shopping context. The authors integrate the results into a framework for AR induced consumer behavior in shopping, thereby providing an important overview of the dynamics in AR-related shopping and the factors influencing the adoption of the technology by consumers. Specifically, the authors encountered that the technological abilities of AR (e.g. in terms of interactivity, vividness, informativeness, etc.) are a source for enhanced utilitarian and hedonic shopping experiences that can support intentions to purchase a product, reuse an AR app, or recommend it to others. Importantly, our review reveals the demand for several avenues for future research. Originality/value The authors provide an overview and synthesis of how and where AR is employed in shopping contexts, what theories and technological characteristics of AR are commonly analyzed, and what psychological and behavioral outcomes AR has been found to evoke. Based on our findings, the authors derive a framework that illustrates the dynamics in AR shopping and give an in-depth discourse on 13 future research agenda points related to thematic, theoretical, methodological, and technological matters.

Abstract:Augmented Reality (AR) has received increased attention over the last years, both from managers and scholars alike. Various studies in the marketing discipline have tackled fragmented aspects of AR, such as its impact on sales or brands. Yet, a holistic approach to AR remains scarce. Therefore, the authors define “Augmented Reality Marketing” as a novel, strategic, and potentially disruptive subdiscipline in marketing. In conjunction, they discuss a nuanced customer journey model for AR Marketing strategy and propose the BICK FOUR framework (branding, inspiring, convincing, and keeping) as a tool to organize corresponding goals. Another contribution is the introduction of several fundamental differences between AR Marketing and traditional digital marketing concepts, such as redefining the reality concept (reduced reality, normal reality, and augmented reality in a metaverse context). Insights from 127 managers further enhance the current and future practices of AR Marketing. Finally, a discussion of ethical and legal considerations completes the assessment.

Abstract:The experience of purchasing a good is highly influenced by various technologies that have not only impacted the shopping experience but have also significantly changed the way brands work on their digital presence. Augmented reality, a technology that delivers multisensory experiences that merge the real world with the digital, discussed in this article, is gaining presence in retail. The multidisciplinary teams of companies in this field, often through their branders and brand managers, have proposed creating and promoting distinctive technological experiences that put the user/customer at the centre. This trend has taken hold in physical retail and increasingly in online retail, which has experienced an unpredictable surge prior to the pandemic associated with COVID19. This paper aims to provide a literature review to understand better the state of the art of Augmented Reality (AR) in the retail space and its evolution in recent years and to identify the brands that have invested the most in this technology. Using SCOPUS and Web of Science as a research base, the work presented here shows that although research in this area already exists, it is perhaps still in an introductory phase in this field and is still looking for greater maturity in the use of AR in the consumer experience.

Abstract:Purpose In this era of smartphone applications, brands are actively developing applications to occupy the consumer’s mobile phone space, adding many practical functions to their applications to increase brand exposure or consumer interest in the brand. Augmented reality (AR) has evolved rapidly in the past decade because of technological breakthroughs, making AR no longer an untouchable technology, but one that can be easily used on almost every phone. Therefore, this study aims to combine extended customer experience with AR marketing activities to explain and predict usage and purchase intention. Design/methodology/approach The eight key factors integrated into the extended customer experience are used as environmental stimulation factors, and Wanna Kicks and FitGlasses are used as experimental environments. A total of 193 valid samples were collected from users with AR experience. The empirical data is processed and verified by partial least squares in this study. Findings Customer experience has received increasing attention in the field of marketing research. This study developed a model to evaluate the antecedents and consequences of AR marketing activities by systematically adding customer experience, continuance intention, purchase intention and customer engagement, and then linking them to the AR application environment. This study presents the academic and practical implications, which can provide future research directions and references for brand marketing strategies and AR applications. Originality/value This study adds interactivity, vividness, perceived usefulness and novelty to the extended concept of customer experience. Therefore, the authors proposed that the extended customer experience can be used to measure the perceptions related to AR applications. This study is expected to provide scholars and practitioners in AR fields with a better understanding of the causes and consequences of customer experience with innovative technologies and to suggest effective marketing recommendations.

Immersive technologies, including augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and three-dimensional (3D) views, are digitally expanding consumers' reality, enabling never-before-seen experiences. As these technologies transform from a quirky novelty into a ubiquitous utility for consumers, we analyze the advances of the past two decades of research that elaborate on the influence of immersive technologies on consumer behavior. While the past reviews in this area have focused on a limited number of immersive technologies or their application in a sole industry, we holistically analyze and compare the influence of AR, VR, MR, and 3D on consumer behavior across various sectors. We adopt an integrated TCM (Theories, Contexts, and Methods)-ADO (Antecedents, Decisions, and Outcomes) framework to systematically review 129 studies from high-quality academic journals. Abstract:Abstract Augmented Reality (AR) technology is one of the latest developments and is receiving ever-increasing attention. Many researches are conducted on an international scale in order to study the effectiveness of its use in education. The purpose of this work was to record the characteristics of AR applications, in order to determine the extent to which they can be used effectively for educational purposes and reveal valuable insights. A Systematic Bibliographic Review was carried out on 73 articles. The structure of the paper followed the PRISMA review protocol. Eight questions were formulated and examined in order to gather information about the characteristics of the applications. From 2016 to 2020 the publications studying AR applications were doubled. The majority of them targeted university students, while a very limited number included special education. Physics class and foreign language learning were the ones most often chosen as the field to develop an app. Most of the applications (68.49%) were designed using marker detection technology for the Android operating system (45.21%) and were created with Unity (47.95%) and Vuforia (42.47%) tools. The majority of researches evaluated the effectiveness of the application in a subjective way, using custom-made not valid and reliable tools making the results not comparable. The limited number of participants and the short duration of pilot testing inhibit the generalization of their results. Technical problems and limitations of the equipment used are mentioned as the most frequent obstacles. Not all key-actors were involved in the design and development process of the applications. This suggests that further research is needed to fully understand the potential of AR applications in education and to develop effective evaluation methods. Key aspects for future research studies are proposed.

Abstract:With the development of emerging digital technologies such as Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality (AR) technology-enabled experience marketing model can bring brand new virtual experience to the users, improve the brand attitudes of users, and increase the use and purchase intention of users. Based on the theoretical basis of experience marketing and AR, the AR application of Guilin Museum was designed and developed by using Unity as the software development tool and using AR Foundation as the AR development framework. The implementation of this application was mainly based on face detection and tracking, image detection, and tracking in the underlying API of AR Foundation. Subsequently, an AR virtual experience marketing model was constructed based on the Schmitt strategic experience module, and the usage data of AR applications were collected. Furthermore, the collected data were analyzed and evaluated using SPSS and AMOS software, and the relationships and influences of sensory experience, emotional experience, thinking experience, action experience, and association experience on the brand attitudes of users and use intention and purchase intention in AR application were tested.

Abstract:Modern brand marketing communications are characterized by a high level of digitalization, which implies both the digitalization of promotion tools and digitalization of business processes. The increase in the degree of brands presence in digital environment gives grounds for scientific and practical reflection on the problems of “digital brand” development. Immersive technologies (virtual, augmented, mixed reality) are considered as forms of brand communication digitalization with target audiences. These technologies allow clients to “immerse” in another (virtual) world, to feel brand atmosphere. This paper focuses on the specifics of augmented reality technology in “brand - audience” communication, which fully reflects the philosophy of phygital marketing, where the customer's journey is associated with constant “shifts” from the physical world to digital world. Foreign experts designate AR-marketing as a separate area in the structure of marketing communications of a brand. The integration of physical promotion tools and augmented reality tools allows us to demonstrate the benefits of goods and services, promotes optimal choice, and forms necessary emotional connection of a brand with the representatives of its target audience. At the same time, a number of aspects of augmented reality technologies related to the audience interaction with branded augmented reality require specification; the nature of augmented reality influence on consumer decision-making; ways to involve consumers in communication based on augmented reality; changes in audience's attitude towards a brand as a result of interaction with branded augmented reality.

Abstract:Despite the growing interest and discussions on Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) in tourism, we do not yet know systematically the knowledge that has been built from academic papers on VR and AR in tourism; if and how VR and AR research intersect, the methodologies used to research VR and AR in tourism, and the emerging contexts in which VR and AR have surfaced in tourism research. By conducting a systematic literature review on VR/AR research in tourism, this work seeks to answer five main research questions: (1) Which tourism sectors and contexts have VR and AR research emerged in?; (2) Which forms of VR and AR have garnered the most attention in tourism research?; (3 and 4) What methodologies/theories are being utilized to research VR and AR in tourism?; and (5) What are the research gaps in VR and AR tourism research? From a synthesis of 46 manuscripts, marketing and tourism education emerged as the most common contexts. However, issues with heterogeneity appeared in terminology usage alongside a lack of theory-based research in VR and AR. Also, gaps were identified where challenges identified revolved around awareness of the technology, usability, and time commitment.

Abstract:This study focuses on the ethical considerations that a consumer perceives with augmented reality (AR) in the context of smartphone applications. Through a systematic review, this research can provide an understanding and ability for developers, product managers, digital marketers and associated business professionals to effectively implement and deploy mobile AR related applications and campaigns, with consideration to the perceptions of the ethical considerations that consumers have of this growing technology. The rise in digital transformation and new technologies paved this research agenda. Trends in the data revealed two overarching factors of 'Benefits' and 'Ethical Considerations'. Within these two factors, several consumer perceived themes were identified with regards to AR applications and their association categorised either positive, negative or neutral. 'Benefits' revealed 3 consistent themes of personalisation, interactivity and information acquisition. 'Ethical Considerations' revealed consistent patterns of educational awareness, privacy, transparency and security. From identifying the consumer perceptions, business professionals can strategically address and or challenge the inherent limitations and their associations during AR application development, product adoption strategies or marketing purposes.

Abstract:Purpose The application of mobile augmented reality (MAR) for enhancing user experiences and consumer patronizing intention has been the focus of recent MAR literature. Few studies examine the differences between apps. This study fills the research gap by examining how consumers assess their experiences with different MAR applications and how their decision-making process is performed, particularly in the setting of smartphones. Design/methodology/approach A web-based online survey was administered to collect data on consumers' perceptions of two different MAR apps: utilitarian and hedonic apps. Reliability and validity of the measurement scales, non-response bias and comment method bias were assessed. With the support of measurement model, partial least square (PLS) was employed to test the research hypotheses. Findings This study reveals that the technological attributes of augmented reality (AR) apps have significant effects on consumer perceptions of their utilitarian and hedonic benefits, including interactivity, visual quality, service quality, technicality and aesthetics. Moreover, this study shows that consumers of hedonic apps place more importance on their enjoyment with the MAR app; consumers of utilitarian apps focus more on the accrued functional values. The findings provide practical insights for retailers in AR marketing and application development in the MAR environment. Originality/value This study provides a comprehensive viewpoint for analyzing ongoing use and purchase intentions simultaneously in a unified theoretical framework. In addition, it compares different types of MAR apps: hedonic and utilitarian. Furthermore, it is one of the first few studies attempting to provide a comprehensive understanding of the predictive role of MAR technologies by incorporating privacy concerns into the research model based on user and gratification framework.

This, coupled with the proliferation of mobile technologies has increased pressure for tourism organisations to design enhanced tourist experiences. Whilst much research attention has focused on the potential of AR, exploring areas such as adoption, acceptance and usability, there is a lack in research identifying constructs to inform the design of valuable AR application experiences. Whilst research identifies the need for AR design to adopt a user-centred, rather than technology-driven approach, past studies have failed to address the needs of both internal and external stakeholder groups. To provide a holistic understanding, recognising differences in perception between stakeholder groups, a multi-stakeholder approach was adopted. A small museum in the UK is used to identify key constructs to inform the effective design of enhanced AR tourism experiences. Fifty interviews were held with five stakeholder groups, revealing four AR design constructs; visitor, organisational, stakeholder and economic value, in addition to a number of design themes. Findings reinforce the importance of stakeholder involvement, and outline constructs to inform the design of AR experiences, extending the existing pool of knowledge and bridging a gap in current research. Abstract:With the rapid advancement of technology, Augmented Reality (AR) technology, known for its ability to deeply integrate virtual information with the real world, is gradually transforming traditional work modes and teaching methods. Particularly in the realms of remote work and online education, AR technology demonstrates a broad spectrum of application prospects. This paper delves into the application potential and actual effects of AR technology in remote work and education. Through a systematic literature review, this study outlines the key features, advantages, and challenges of AR technology. Based on theoretical analysis, it discusses the scientific basis and technical support that AR technology provides for enhancing remote work efficiency and promoting innovation in educational teaching models. Additionally, by designing an empirical research plan and analyzing experimental data, this article reveals the specific performance and influencing factors of AR technology in practical applications. Finally, based on the results of the experiments, this research summarizes the application value of AR technology in remote work and education, looks forward to its future development trends, and proposes forward-looking research directions and strategic suggestions, offering empirical foundation and theoretical guidance for further promoting the in-depth application of AR technology in related fields.

Abstract:Marketers use augmented reality (AR) to place virtual brand‐related information into a consumer's physical context. Grounded in the literature on AR, brand love, metaphor theory, and closeness as interpreted by the neural theory of language, the authors theorize that branded AR content can reduce the perceived physical, spatial distance between a consumer and a brand. This perceived closeness subsequently drives the closeness of the emotional relationship in the form of brand love. Two empirical studies validate this framework. Study 1 shows that using an AR app (vs. non‐AR) increases the perceived physical closeness of the brand, which in turn drives brand love (i.e., relationship closeness). Study 2 replicates this finding in a pre‐/post‐use design. Here, high levels of local presence (i.e., the extent to which consumers perceive a brand as actually being present in their physical environment) drive perceived physical closeness, which leads to brand love. We also find that AR's power to generate brand love increases when the consumer is already familiar with the brand. We discuss managerial implications for AR marketing today and in a metaverse future in which AR content might be prevalent in consumers' everyday perceptions of the real world.

Abstract:Handheld and wearable smart devices have enabled augmented reality (AR) technologies (ART), including AR hypermedia (ARH) print ads, in which mobile smart devices act as viewfinders to superimpose virtual, hyperlinked, 2-D images over traditional print ads. This study utilizes eight constructs—attitude toward the ad (Aad), informativeness, entertainment, irritation, advertising value, time–effort, novelty, and ad effectiveness—to compare consumer response to three different ad formats, a traditional print ad, a quick response (QR) code hypermedia (QRH) print ad, and an ARH print ad. Results showed the ARH print ad was preferred, yielding higher perceptions of informativeness, novelty, and effectiveness; whereas the QRH print ad resulted in higher irritation; and the traditional print ad resulted in higher time–effort. Theoretical and managerial recommendations are offered based on these findings.

APPLICATION OF MARKETING TOOLS OF VIRTUAL AND AUGMENTED REALITY FOR MODIFICATION OF CONSUMER

Abstract:The article forms the theoretical foundations of the use of marketing tools of virtual and augmented reality to modify consumer behavior. The mechanism of consumer buying behavior, which consists of five stages: awareness of the need, search for information about the product or service, evaluation of options, namely: comparative characteristics of goods, the final decision to purchase, based on all previous stages, feedback on a purchase, that is, the consumer determines his attitude to the purchase and the factors of influence, namely: psychological, personal, socio-cultural, marketing, situational. It is determined that the motives of the purpose and needs of the consumer are constantly changing. Two definitions are proposed: virtual reality (VR) is a computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment with which an individual can truly interact using special electronic equipment, such as a helmet with a screen inside or gloves equipped with sensors, and augmented reality (AR) is a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image of a real-world image, thus providing an augmented view. The results of AR/VR involvement were analyzed on the example of «OKKO», «Gucci», «LOWE’S», «SK Telecom», «Burger King». Virtual (VR) and augmented (AR) realities have been proven to be of great importance and value to the brand that uses them, as evidenced by increased sales («OKKO», «Burger King»); awareness, PR publications, awards («LOWE’S», «Burger King»); audience enthusiasm through new channels («Gucci», «LOWE’S»); innovation among competitors («Gucci»); new experiences for users and emotional intimacy; the versatility of tools for online and offline events that are not affected by the pandemic. A pilot study was conducted, which interviewed 202 respondents aged 19 to 28, who were asked 7 questions about possible areas of application of AR/VR technologies. It is established that the implementation of virtual and augmented reality tools has significant potential, is a benchmark for rational marketing decisions, and helps to increase loyalty and increase consumer confidence.
