Abstract:Background Tunneled central venous catheters (CVCs) are the cornerstone of modern oncologic practice. Establishing best practices for catheter management in children with cancer is essential to optimize care, but few guidelines exist to guide placement and management. Objectives: To address four questions: 1) Does catheter composition influence the incidence of complications; 2) Is there a platelet count below which catheter placement poses an increased risk of complications; 3) Is there an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) below which catheter placement poses an increased risk of complications; and 4) Are there best practices for the management of a central line associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI)? Methods Data Sources: English language articles in Ovid Medline, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Databases. Study Selection: Independently performed by 2 reviewers, disagreements resolved by a third reviewer. Data Extraction: Performed by 4 reviewers on forms designed by consensus, quality assessed by GRADE methodology. Results Data were extracted from 110 manuscripts. There was no significant difference in fracture rate, venous thrombosis, catheter occlusion or infection by catheter composition. Thrombocytopenia with minimum thresholds of 30,000-50,000 platelets/mcl was not associated with major hematoma. Limited evidence suggests a platelet count <30,000/mcL was associated with small increased risk of hematoma. While few studies found a significant increase in CLABSI in CVCs placed in neutropenic patients with ANC<500Kcells/dl, meta-analysis suggests a small increase in this population. Catheter removal remains recommended in complicated or persistent infections. Limited evidence supports antibiotic, ethanol, or hydrochloric lock therapy in definitive catheter salvage. No high-quality data were available to answer any of the proposed questions. Conclusions Although over 15,000 tunneled catheters are placed annually in North America into children with cancer, there is a paucity of evidence to guide practice, suggesting multiple opportunities to improve care. Results of a long-term, prospective study on complications of central venous catheter in pediatric patients with hematologic-oncologic diseases

Abstract:Background: Central venous catheter (CVC)-related complications remain a significant cause of morbidity in pediatric hematology-oncology. We prospectively surveyed the incidence of CVC-related complications in children with hematologic-oncologic diseases. Procedure: Five-hundred-eighty-one CVCs were inserted in 421 patients from January 2010 to June 2022 (153,731 CVC days observation; follow-up data up to December 31, 2022). Results: Overall, 671 complications were recorded (4.365/1000 CVC days): 49.7% malfunctions (1.88/1000 CVC days, 4.8% of CVC early removals), 23.9% bacteremia (0.90/1000, 15.1%), 19.6% mechanical complications (0.74/1000, 70.2%), 20.1% localized infections (0.76/1000, 17.1%), 0.5% thrombosis (0.02/1000, 33.3%). At multivariate analysis, risk factors for malfunction were Broviac-Hickman type of CVC (hazard ratio [HR] 2.5) or Port-a-cath (HR 3.4) or Proline (HR 4.3), p < .0001; for bacteremia double-lumen CVC (HR 3.2, p < .0001); for mechanical complications age at CVC insertion under median (HR 4.5, p < .0001) and Broviac-Hickman (HR 1.6) or Proline (HR 2.7), p = .01; finally for localized infections Broviac-Hickman (HR 2.9) or Proline (HR 4.4), p = .0001. The 2-year cumulative incidence of premature removal was 23.5%, and risk factors were age at CVC insertion under median (HR 2.4, p < .0001), Broviac-Hickman (HR 2.3) or Proline (HR 4.2), p < .0001. Conclusions: Premature removal occurs in approximately 20%-25% of long-term CVCs. A surveillance program has a fundamental role in identifying the risk factors for CVC complications and the areas of intervention to improve CVC management.

Focusing on distinct features of concern for the social interaction process, results imply that individuals’ exposure to, and valuation of, stock market related social signals are of importance and thus, contribute to the understanding of the heterogeneous influence of social interaction. Overall, the results are interesting and enhance the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of social interaction on individuals’ financial decision making.

Central venous lines in critically ill children: Thrombosis but not infection is site dependent

Abstract:Background: Central venous catheters (CVC) are vital to the management of critically ill children. Despite efforts to minimize complications, central line associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) and venous thromboembolisms (VTE) still occur. Methods: We performed a retrospective review of a prospectively collected database for children admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) between November 2013 and December 2016. Results: In total, 2714 CVC were in place, 979 of which were percutaneous CVC. During the study period, 21 CLABSI (1.6/1000 line days) were identified, of which, nearly half (n = 9, 42.9%) were associated with percutaneous CVC (2.6/1000 line days). Poisson regression analysis did not identify a single risk factor for CLABSI when adjusting for line type, anatomic location and laterality of placement, geographic location of placement, length of PICU admission, presence of gastrostomy tube, concurrent mechanical ventilation, age, weight, and height. Forty clinically significant VTE (2.9/1000 line days) were identified, with percutaneous CVC having the highest incidence (7.5/1000 line days, p < 0.001). Of percutaneous CVC, clinically significant VTE were more often associated with femoral vein cannulation (14.8/1000 line days) compared to internal jugular and subclavian vein (2.5 and 2.4/1000 line days, respectively, p < 0.001). Conclusion: This data suggests that the femoral site may be an important risk factor that should be considered in prevention strategies for catheter-associated VTE in children. Abstract:To elucidate the stability and phase transition of cubic phases of biomembranes with infinite periodic minimal surface is indispensable from biological and physicochemical aspects. In this report, we investigated the effect of positively charged peptide-3K (LLKKK) and poly(L-lysine) on the phase stability of monoolein (MO) membranes containing negatively charged dioleoylphosphatidic acid (DOPA) (i.e., DOPA/MO membranes) using small-angle X-ray scattering. At first, the effect of peptide-3K on 10% DOPA/90% MO membrane in excess water, which is in the Q229 phase, was investigated. At 3.4 mM peptide-3K, a Q229 to Q230 phase transition occurred, and at >3.4 mM peptide-3K, the membrane was in the Q230 phase. Poly(L-lysine) (M(w) 1K-4K) also induced the Q230 phase, but peptide-2K (LLKK) could not induce it in the same membrane. We also investigated the effect of peptide-3K on the multilamellar vesicle (MLV) of 25% DOPA/75% MO membrane, which is in L(alpha) phase. In the absence of peptide, the spacing of MLV was very large (11.3 nm), but at > or = 8 mM peptide-3K, it greatly decreased to a constant value (5.2 nm), irrespective of the peptide concentration, indicating that peptide-3K and the membranes form an electrostatically stabilized aggregation with low water content. Poly(L-lysine) also decreased greatly the spacing of the 25% DOPA/75% MO MLV, indicating the formation of a similar aggregation. To compare the effects of peptide-3K and poly(L-lysine) with that of osmotic stress on stability of the cubic phase, we investigated the effect of poly(ethylene glycol) with molecular weight 7500 (PEG-6K) on the phase stability of 10% DOPA/90% MO membrane. With an increase in PEG-6K concentration, i.e., with an increase in osmotic stress, the most stable phase changed as follows; Q229 (Schwartz's P surface) --> Q224 (D) --> Q230 (G). On the basis of these results, we discuss the mechanism of the effects of the positively charged short peptides (peptide-3K) and poly(L-lysine) on the structure and phase stability of DOPA/MO membranes.

Abstract:Central venous catheters (CVCs) are commonly inserted in children and young people with a cancer diagnosis to administer systemic anticancer treatment and supportive care therapies. These devices require routine nurse-led cares such as dressing changes, flushing of the line and needleless access device changes. A prospective audit of UK principal treatment centres (PTCs) was undertaken to review current practices of CVC care. Paediatric oncology practice educators from each of the 20 UK PTCs were contacted in August 2022 and requested to complete a table of current CVC care and management within their centre. Responses were received from 18 of the 20 centres (90% response rate). All of the 18 centres routinely change CVC dressings weekly. Incidence and acute complications of asymptomatic central venous catheter-related deep venous thrombosis in critically ill children

Abstract:Objective: To determined the current incidence and acute complications of asymptomatic central venous catheter (CVC)-related deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in critically ill children. Study design: We performed a prospective cohort study in 3 pediatric intensive care units. A total of 101 children with newly inserted untunneled CVC were included. CVC-related DVT was diagnosed using compression ultrasonography with color Doppler. Results: Asymptomatic CVC-related DVT was diagnosed in 16 (15.8%) children, which equated to 24.7 cases per 1000 CVC-days. Age was independently associated with DVT. Compared with children aged <1 year, children aged >13 years had significantly higher odds of DVT (aOR, 14.1, 95% CI, 1.9-105.8; P = .01). Other patient demographics, interventions (including anticoagulant use), and CVC characteristics did not differ between children with and without DVT. Mortality-adjusted duration of mechanical ventilation, a surrogate for pulmonary embolism, was statistically similar in the 2 groups (22 ± 9 days in children with DVT vs 23 ± 7 days in children without DVT; P = .34). Mortality-adjusted intensive care unit and hospital lengths of stay also were similar in the 2 groups. Conclusion: Asymptomatic CVC-related DVT is common in critically ill children. However, the acute complications do not seem to differ between children with and without DVT. Larger studies are needed to confirm these results. Future studies should also investigate the chronic complications of asymptomatic CVC-related DVT.

Abstract:Summary Background Taurolidine-citrate(-heparin) lock solutions (TCHL) are suggested as a promising and safe method for the prevention of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI). Aim To investigate the efficacy TCHL for the prevention of CrLABSI in paediatric oncology patients. Methods An assessor blinded randomized controlled trial at the Princess Máxima Centre for paediatric oncology, the Netherlands, was performed from 2020-2023. Paediatric oncology patients receiving a tunnelled central venous access device (CVAD) were eligible. A total of 462 patients was required to compare the TCHL to the heparin-only lock (HL). Patients were followed-up for the first 90 days after CVAD insertion. The primary outcome was the incidence of the first CLABSI from CVAD insertion until the end of follow-up. Intention-to-treat and per-protocol analyses were performed. Findings In total, 232 were randomized in the HL and 231 in the TCHL-group. A total of 47 CLABSIs were observed. The intention-to-treat analysis showed that a CLABSI was observed in 26 (11.2%) of the HL-group patients versus 21 (9.1%) of the TCHL-group patients; incidence rate ratio (IRR) of 0.81 (CI95%0.46-1.45), in favour of the TCHL-group. The per-protocol analysis showed that a CLABSI was observed in 10 (7.9%) of the HL-group patients versus 6 (4.8%) of the TCHL-group patients; IRR of 0.59 (CI95%0.21-1.62) in favour of the TCHL-group. Adverse events were more common in the TCHL-group but rarely reported. Conclusion No difference was detected between the TCHL and HL in the incidence of CLABSI in paediatric oncology patients. Abstract:Aims Central venous catheters are essential for the management of pediatric cardiac surgery patients. Recently, an ultrasound‐guided access via a supraclavicular approach to the brachiocephalic vein has been described. Central venous catheters are associated with a relevant number of complications in pediatric patients. In this study, we evaluated the frequency of complications of left brachiocephalic vein access compared with right internal jugular vein standard access in children undergoing cardiac surgery. Methods Retrospective analysis of all pediatric cases at our tertiary care university hospital over a two‐year period receiving central venous catheters for cardiac surgery. Primary endpoint: Frequency of complications associated with central venous catheters inserted via the left brachiocephalic vein vs. right internal jugular vein. Complications were defined as: chylothorax, deep vein thrombosis, sepsis, or delayed chest closure. Secondary endpoints: Evaluation of the insertion depth of the catheter using a height‐based formula without adjustment for side used. Results Initially, 504 placed catheters were identified. Following inclusion and exclusion criteria, 480 placed catheters remained for final analysis. Overall complications were reported in 68/480 (14.2%) cases. There was no difference in the frequency of all complications in the left brachiocephalic vein vs. the right internal jugular vein group (15.49% vs. 13.65%; OR = 1.16 [0.64; 2.07]), nor was there any difference considering the most relevant complications chylothorax (7.7% vs. 8.6%; OR = 0.89 [0.39; 1.91]) and thrombosis (5.6% vs. 4.5%; OR = 1.28 [0.46; 3.31]). The mean deviation from the optimal insertion depth was left brachiocephalic vein vs. right internal jugular vein 5.38±13.6mm and 4.94±15.1mm, respectively. Conclusions Among children undergoing cardiac surgery, there is no significant difference between the supraclavicular approach to the left brachiocephalic vein and the right internal jugular vein regarding complications. For both approaches, a universal formula can be used to determine the correct insertion depth.

Abstract:Reliable and long-lasting venous access in children is preferred outside the ICU settings where CVADs are essential for long-term treatment involving administration of long-term nutrition in gut enteropathies, chemotherapy, hemodialysis as well as in palliative situations requiring pain medications or administration of antibiotics as in chronic osteomyelitis. Alina Burek et al. have brought to light important aspects related to the use of CVADs outside the ICU settings. The authors found distinct benefits to healthcare facilities that have vascular access teams as they follow established guidelines for the use of CVADs. A dedicated specialized team with good knowledge of devices helped in the choice of appropriate CVAD and optimal CVAD utilization. It is important to follow the key principles when using CVADs. This includes the choice of appropriate devices depending on the duration of use. CVADs with the smallest outer diameter and least number of lumens should be chosen where the catheter outer diameter should be less than 45% of that of the vein to reduce risk of thrombosis. Infection prevention protocol must be strictly implemented and the CVAD promptly removed when no longer required. CVAD performance is often taken as a benchmark of hospital performance, highlighting its importance.

Incidence and risk factors of complications during central venous access devices removal in children

Abstract:Purpose: To quantify the rates and identify risk factors for the complications of central venous access devices (CVADs) removal in children. Method: Retrospective (2018-2023) review of children undergoing CVADs removal at a single institution. Data are reported as frequency, percentages and median. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors associated with difficult removal. Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (ROC) analysis was conducted to identify the age cut-off and positive likelihood ratio (+LH) for the indwelling time associated with complicated removal. p-Value <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: We identified 208 CVAD removals with a median age of 7.2 (0.2-18.4) years including 116 (55.8%) males. The median CVAD placement duration was 1.26 years (0.4-5.7) years. Indications for insertion included acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL; 78/208, 37.5%), lymphomas (31/208, 14.9%), other malignancies (58/208, 27.9%). Removal indications included completion of treatment (144/208, 69.2%), infection (22/208, 10.6%), malfunction (7/208, 3.4%) and other reasons (35/208, 16.8%). There were 20 (9.6%) complications characterised by difficulty removing the CVAD. Complicated removals were more likely to occur in children with ALL as the primary diagnosis (p = 0.001); independently of the indication for insertion, longer indwelling time was associated with higher risk of complicated removal (p < 0.001). Indwelling time >2.09 years was associated with a 2.87 increased risk of difficult removal. Conclusion: In our experience, almost 10% of CVAD removals in children result in complications. These findings are associated with an indwelling time >2 years; strategies to prevent complicated removals should be considered in children requiring long-term central venous access.

Abstract:Deep venous thrombosis is a possible complication of indwelling central venous catheters (CVC), with an incidence as high as 61%. We report a case of successful thrombolysis of a CVC-related right atrial thrombus in a pediatric cancer patient with recombinant human tissue plasminogen activator (0.1 mg/kg per h for 12 h) and heparin (10 IU/kg per h for 24 h) administered for 6 days. Daily echocardiographic examination showed progressive lysis of the thrombus. The thrombolytic treatment was associated with mild oozing from the venipuncture sites, but no major bleeding was noted; moreover, thrombin, thromboplastin time and fibrinogen were normal or only minimally altered. Anticoagulant therapy, with or without CVC removal, is the treatment of choice for uncomplicated CVC-related thrombosis. Fibrinolytic therapy may be indicated in some cases at risk of pulmonary embolism or to avoid open heart surgery. Recombinant human tissue plasminogen activator is increasingly used for thrombolytic treatment of organ and limb thrombosis, but experience with it in the pediatric hematology-oncology setting is still limited. This report showed that administering recombinant human tissue plasminogen activator in a pediatric cancer patient prior to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation was effective and safe under strict biochemical and instrumental monitoring. Further studies are needed to determine the best antithrombotic treatment for CVC-related thrombosis, and also the dosage of the medication selected and the duration of treatment.

Abstract:Background: Proper securement of central venous catheters plays an important role in onco-hematological pediatric patients. A new subcutaneously anchored securement device has been recently introduced in the clinical practice, and it has been extensively used in children. Method: In our study, we have retrospectively investigated the safety and the effectiveness of such device, reviewing the experience of three Italian pediatric oncological units. We have considered only tunneled catheters (cuffed or non-cuffed) inserted in children with malignancy; all types of tunneled central catheters were included in the analysis (both centrally and peripherally inserted) as long as they were secured with a subcutaneously anchored device. We investigated the incidence of dislodgment and of other catheter-related complications, with special attention to local adverse effects potentially related to the securement device. Results: We collected data from 311 tunneled catheters of different caliber: 80.4% were centrally inserted central catheters (CICC), 15.4% were peripherally inserted (PICC), and 4.2% were femorally inserted. Approximately half of the catheters (51%) were non-cuffed. Incidence of dislodgment was very low (2.6%) and the incidence of local pain or inflammation potentially related to the securement device was minimal (1.9%). Catheter related bacteremias were below 1 episode/1000 catheter days. No symptomatic catheter related thrombosis was reported. There was no significant difference in complications comparing cuffed versus non-cuffed catheters, or CICCs versus PICCs, or hematologic tumors versus solid tumors. Conclusion: In our retrospective analysis of a vast population of oncological pediatric patients with tunneled central catheters, the subcutaneously anchored securement device was tolerated very well, and it was highly effective in preventing dislodgment, both in cuffed and non-cuffed catheters.
Complication Rates of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters in Oncologic Versus Non-Oncologic Patients

Abstract:Objectives: Peripherally inserted central catheters are commonly used in cancer patients and provide vascular access for the administration of chemotherapy, antibiotics, or parenteral nutrition. Besides many advantages, they represent a source of possible complications such as catheter related blood stream infection, catheter occlusion, or thrombosis. In this study, the catheter-related complication rate between oncologic and non-oncologic patients was compared. Methods: This retrospective cohort-study included 411 patients who underwent their first catheter placement at the Vienna General Hospital-Medical University of Vienna from January 2013 to June 2018. Patient demographics and catheter-related parameters were collected and statistically analyzed using a competing risk model. Results: Mean catheter dwell time was 27.75 days. The overall complication rate was 7.54% (2.72 per 1000 catheter days). Underlying malignant disease (hazard ratio: 0.351, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.133-0.929, P = .035) and chemotherapy administration (hazard ratio: 2.837, 95% CI: 1.088-7.394, P = .033) were significantly associated with the occurrence of any kind of complication. Catheter related blood stream infection was observed among 11 (2.68%) patients and again significantly associated with chemotherapy administration (hazard ratio: 4.545, 95% CI: 1.178-17.539; P = .028). Thrombosis was found in 7 (1.70%) patients and occlusion in 13 (3.16%) cases. Conclusions and implications for nursing practice: Choice of venous access is an interdisciplinary decision with emphasis on patient participation. In oncologic patients, our data suggests that the benefits of peripherally inserted central catheters regarding costs, invasiveness, and accessibility might be outweighed by the higher rate of complications associated with the device. This becomes even more important in a community care setting, where standardized handling procedures and patient education play a pivotal role in device safety.

Abstract:Central venous access through tunneled central venous catheters (CVCs) are one of the cornerstones of modern oncologic practice in pediatric patients since CVCs provide a reliable access route for the administration of chemotherapy. Establishing best practices for CVC management in children with cancer is essential to optimize care. This article reviews current best practices, including types of devices, their placement, complications, and long‐term outcomes. Additionally, nutrition status and nutritional support are also very important determinants of outcomes and care in pediatric surgical oncology patients. We review current nutritional assessment, support, access for enteral and parenteral nutrition delivery, and their complications, mainly from a surgical perspective. Overall, access surgery, whether for CVCs, or for enteral access can be challenging, and best practice guidelines supported by current though limited evidence are necessary to minimize complications and optimize outcomes.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinical features and outcomes of pediatric central venous catheter-related thrombosis.Methods The clinical data of 21 cases of pediatric central venous catheter-related thrombosis reported by intravenous teams were retrospectively analyzed.Results Limb swelling,increase in thigh circumference and/or leg circumference,limb pain or less movement were the major clinical manifestations of thrombosis.Central venous catheter-related thrombosis was found within 1 to 10 days after intubation with an average of 4.76 days.Seventeen children received standardized intravenous thrombolytic therapy and the treatment was effective in 16 cases within 1 to 7 days after treatment.The average duration of thrombolytic therapy was 3.32 days.The thrombolytic therapy was ineffective in one case.Among the 4 children who didn’t receive thrombolytic therapy,the thrombosis disappeared in one case.Conclusion The central venous catheter-related thrombosis can be found by careful clinical observation combined with Ultrasonic Doppler examination.Once the catheter-related thrombosis was found,formal thrombolytic therapy should start as soon as possible unless with definitely contraindications.

Abstract:and fibrous healing is proceeding apace in the depths, and whern 5 or even IO local applications at intervals have been necessary to obtain a measure of bacteriostasis, which even then may be only temporary. And as, according to the example cited, it is easier to treat to a successful conclusion the pneumonia from the outset than the complicating lung abscess later, so in cases of infected wounds involving bone it is prudent to employ full chemotherapeutic measures at the time of full surgical treatment rather than later, when sequestra and sinuses may have formed in association with established infection. Full surgical procedure is of first importance, but we would emphasize that in cases of the kind considered here the preand post-operative administration of a sulphonamide, preferably sulphathiazole, is equally essential, and should be supplemented by local application, especially when many fascial planes have been disturbed or there is much tissue damage. For minimum pre-operative medication, 6 g. of sulphathiazole within 4 hours yields a blood concentration of 4 mg. per 100 c.cm., so that intramuscular and intravenous routes are not always necessary to supply the immediately available sulphonamide requisite in the blood and tissue fluids. There is little doubt that sulphathiazole should replace sulphapyridine, both orally and locally, in the treatment of such cases of staphylococcal infection, for this drug is better tolerated and has a greater bacteriostatic action. Further, adequate oral administration of sulphathiazole should be continued as necessary, so that essential tissue-fluid concentrations are present when multiplication of organisms occurs or is likely to occur, thus ensuring that bacteriostasis is sufficient to permit the several body-defence mechanisms to operate unhindered or in conditions as favourable as possible.
Totally implantable venous ports in infants and children: a single-center retrospective study of indications and safety

Abstract:Introduction: Totally Implantable Venous Access Devices (TIVADs) contribute significantly to the treatment progress and comfort of patients requiring long-term therapy. However, the procedure for implanting TIVADs, as well as its very presence, may be associated with complications. Aim: This study evaluates the indications, safety, and complication rates of venous port implantations in pediatric patients. It also explores factors influencing the occurrence of early and late complications post-implantation. Materials and methods: The study included 383 pediatric patients treated at the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Traumatology, and Urology in Poznan between 2013 and 2020 who underwent 474 implantations of intravenous ports. Venous access was achieved using the Seldinger technique. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistica 13 with TIBCO and PQStat 1.8.2.156 with PQStat. Results: Venous ports were used in 345 oncology patients requiring chemotherapy (90% of the total group) and in 38 children (10%) with non-oncology indications. There were 36 early complications (7.6%) and 18 late complications (3.8%), excluding infectious complications. The most common early, non-infectious complications included pneumothorax (15 patients; 3%) and port pocket hematoma (12 patients; 2.5%). The most common late, non-infectious complications observed were venous catheter obstruction (8 children; 1.7%) and port system leakage (5 children; 1%). Infectious complications occurred in 129 cases (27.2%). Children with a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, acute myeloid leukemia, and acute lymphoblastic leukemia had a significantly higher incidence of port infections. Venous ports equipped with a polyurethane catheter, compared to systems with a silicone catheter, functioned significantly shorter. Conclusions: The Seldinger method of port implantation is quick, minimally invasive, and safe. The type of port, including the material of the port's venous catheter, and the underlying disease have an impact on the durability of implantable intravenous systems. The experience of the surgeon is related to the frequency of complications associated with the procedure.

Abstract:Patients with hematological malignancies (HM) or undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) require reliable vascular access. Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) meet this need, however, studies suggest these patients have higher rates of PICC-associated complications. This retrospective cohort study evaluates the influence of PICC type on the rates and incidences of complications. Four hundred and eighty-five dual lumen PICCs were inserted into 469 complex patients with HM or undergoing HCT: 161 Groshong®, 60 PowerPICC® Solo, 165 BioFlo®, and 99 Arrow®. The rates and incidences of complications differed significantly across the PICC types. The overall rate of complication ranged from 7.40 to 26.4/1000 catheter days (CDs). The rate of deep vein thrombosis (0.31–1.48/1000 CDs) and occlusion differed across the PICC types, while the rate of central line-associated bloodstream infection (0.53–0.74/1000 CDs) did not. Following multivariate adjustment, PICC type was associated with complication rate. This highlights that PICC type should be considered in clinical decisions.
