Abstract:Background and study aim: This study aimed to examine the effects of abdominal massage on constipation management and quality of life. Material and methods: In this study conducted in a nursing home, 220 older adults (over 65 years old) were identified with constipation based on the Rome II Diagnostic Criteria for Constipation. This controlled trial using blocked randomization was stratified by sex and age and was conducted with 35 elderly participants, of which 17 formed the experimental group and were applied abdominal massage and 18 formed the untrained control group. The experimental group underwent abdominal massage training for eight weeks, five days, for 30 min/day after the meal under a research team member. The control group received no intervention. Data were collected from both groups by using a personal information form, the Constipation Quality of Life Scale. After the practice, each group was re-subjected to the same scales. Results: Our results showed that abdominal massage is effective in constipation management (p < 0.005). Moreover, the difference between the experimental and control groups was statistically significant (p < 0.001) in terms of Constipation Quality of Life Scale post-test scores. Constipation Quality of Life Scale subscales of the experiment and control group; the difference between the post-test scores of Physical Disability (p < 0.001), Psychosocial Discomfort (p < 0.001), Anxiety (p < 0.001) and Satisfaction (p < 0.001) was found statistically significant. Conclusion: Abdominal massage, as one of the independent nursing initiatives, may be suggested to be used in constipation management.

Abstract:Background: Chronic constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders throughout theworld. Many patients with severe constipation are resistant to pharmacological treatments and operations. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of multidisciplinary approach in patients with severe constipation through a long-term follow-up.Methods: Three hundred and ninety-one patients diagnosed with constipation according to Rome III criteria accepted multidisciplinary treatment or standard medical treatment between March, 2010 and April, 2013. The multidisciplinary constipation clinic in a tertiary care setting with dietary modification, exercise therapy, bowel habit adjustment, abdominal breathing exercise and drug therapy. Constipation symptoms, quality of life (SF-36), anxiety and depression were assessed before enrollment and after therapy. Results: Two hundred and eighty-eight subjects were treated by multidisciplinary treatment and 235 subjects complete the follow-up. The mean age of patients was 50.6 ± 16.0 years. 74.7% of patients were female. The mean duration of follow-up was 2.3 years. The weekly bowel movements was higher in the multidisciplinary group than the medication group(5 (3, 7) vs. 3.0 (2, 4), P<0.001). There was significant improvement on Bristol score (3 (3, 3) vs. 3 (2, 3), P=0.032), straining effort (4 (3, 5) vs. 8 (6.75, 9.0), P<0.001) and straining time(10 (7, 13) vs. 15 (10, 17), P=0.002). Significant improvement was also noted with multidisciplinary treatment on straining at defecations(31.1% vs. 59.8%, P=0.005), Hard stools(24.3% vs. 52.4%, P=0.005) and sensation of anorectal obstruction(8.5% vs. 35.4%, P<0.001). The proportion of patients with laxative/ enema use was lower in multidisciplinary group than the medication group(27.6% vs. 63.4%, P<0.001). Meanwhile, the score of quality of life (N=13) were significant higher compared with baseline. Multidisciplinary treatment also reduced score of anxiety (33.07±6.31 vs. 35.13±4.05, P=0.032)and depression(37.59±9.45 vs. 44.07±6.77, P<0.001)(N=44).Conclusion: This study suggest that multidisciplinary approach improves long-term constipation symptoms. Improvement in quality of life was also seen in patients attending themultidisciplinary constipation clinic.

Abstract:Background: Associated with decreases in quality of life, constipation is a relatively common problem. Abdominal massage appears to increase bowel function, but unlike laxatives with no negative side effects. Because earlier studies have methodological flaws and cannot provide recommendations, more research is needed. Objective: This study investigates the effects of abdominal massage on gastrointestinal functions and laxative intake in people who have constipation. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Participants and method: A sample of 60 people with constipation was included and randomized in two groups. The intervention group received abdominal massage in addition to an earlier prescribed laxative and the control group received only laxatives according to earlier prescriptions. Gastrointestinal function was assessed with Gastrointestinal Symptoms Rating Scale (GSRS) on three occasions; at baseline, week 4 and week 8. The statistical methods included linear regression, Wilcoxon sign rank test, and Mann-Whitney U-test. Result: Abdominal massage significantly decreased severity of gastrointestinal symptoms assessed with GSRS according to total score (p=.003), constipation syndrome (p=.013), and abdominal pain syndrome (p=.019). The intervention group also had significant increase of bowel movements compared to the control group (p=.016). There was no significant difference in the change of the amount of laxative intake after 8 weeks. Conclusions: Abdominal massage decreased severity of gastrointestinal symptoms, especially constipation and abdominal pain syndrome, and increased bowel movements. The massage did not lead to decrease in laxative intake, a result that indicates that abdominal massage could be a complement to laxatives rather than a substitute.

Abstract:Introduction Chronic constipation (CC) is a highly prevalent health challenge that is particularly challenging to treat in elderly patients. Although lifestyle guidance and laxative therapy often yield positive outcomes, patients occasionally struggle with maintaining dietary control. Therefore, identifying an economical and safe alternative therapy to the existing treatment methods documented in the international literature is necessary. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of abdominal massage in elderly patients with CC to provide a basis for future mechanistic research. Methods and analysis Electronic searches will be conducted to identify clinical randomised controlled trials in various databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Cochrane Library, Embase, Airiti Library, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure Databases, Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database (VIP), Chinese Biomedical Literature Database and Wan Fang Database. Relevant data will be extracted, and a meta-analysis will be conducted using Reviewer Manager V.5.4. Quality and risk assessments of the included studies will be performed, and the outcome indicators of the trials will be observed. This review will evaluate abdominal massage as a treatment option for relieving symptoms and improving quality of life in elderly patients with CC. Moreover, it will provide additional insights for clinical treatment and mechanistic studies. The search will be performed following the publication of this protocol (estimated to occur on 30 December 2023). Ethics and dissemination As this is a literature review, ethics approval will not be required. We will disseminate the findings of this study to publications in peer-reviewed journals as well as presentations at relevant national and international conferences. Abstract:PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of aroma massage on constipation in advanced cancer patients.METHODS: This study employed a randomized control group pre- and post test design and included an aroma massage group, plain massage group, and control group. To evaluate the effect of aromatherapy, the degree of constipation was measured using a constipation assessment scale, severity level of constipation and the frequency of bowel movements. Data was analyzed by repeated measures of Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon signed ranks test, Spearman's rho and ANOVA using SPSS program.RESULTS: The score of the constipation assessment scale of the aroma massage group was significantly lower than the control group. Apart from the improvement in bowel movements, the results showed significantly improved quality of life in physical and support domains of the aroma massage group.CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggest aroma massage can help to relieve constipation in patients with advanced cancer.

Abstract:This study aims to evaluate the effect of acupressure on constipation symptoms and quality of life in older people. The study was a double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled, qualitative and quantitative mixed-method study. Individuals in the acupressure group received acupressure for 21 min per day for a total of 12 sessions. The other group received sham acupressure for the same duration. Constipation Assessment Scale (CAS), Constipation Quality of Life Scale (PAC-QOL), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and individual follow-up form were used to evaluate quantitative data, and semi-structured interview form was used to evaluate qualitative data. A total of 81 participants were randomized to acupressure (n = 41, mean age: 70.56 ± 4.76, 70.7% female) or sham acupressure (n = 40, mean age: 71.17 ± 5.19, 67.5% female). Repeated measurements of the participants showed that CAS scores differed significantly between acupressure applications (p < 0.001). There were also statistically significant differences between the two groups in PAC-QOL and VAS after the application, number of defecations and laxative use (p < 0.001). Compared to the placebo group, the acupressure group had significantly lower mean post-test scores in all constipation rating scales. Qualitative findings from the study also support the quantitative findings. For older people seeking evidence-based alternative therapy, acupressure may be a solution to reduce the constipation symptoms. Future studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm our study findings. ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT05506397, 17 August 2022, retrospectively registered. This study aims to evaluate the effect of acupressure on constipation symptoms and quality of life in older people. It was observed that the constipation score of the acupressure group were significantly decreased and the difference between the two groups was significant. Acupressure is an effective non-pharmacological approach for the treatment of constipation.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a seamlessly integrated fiber-wireless system that delivers a 108 Gb/s signal through 80 km fiber and 1 m wireless transport over free space at 100 GHz adopting polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) modulation and heterodyning coherent detection. The X- and Y-polarization components of the optical PDM-QPSK baseband signal are simultaneously upconverted to 100 GHz wireless carrier by optical polarization-diversity heterodyne beating, and then independently transmitted and received by two pairs of transmitter and receiver antennas, which form a 2×2 multiple-input multiple-output wireless link. At the wireless receiver, two-stage downconversion is performed firstly in the analog domain based on balanced mixer and sinusoidal radio frequency signal, and then in the digital domain based on digital signal processing (DSP). Polarization demultiplexing is realized by the constant modulus algorithm in the DSP part at the receiver. The bit-error ratio for the 108 Gb/s PDM-QPSK signal is less than the pre-forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8×10(-3) after both 1 m wireless delivery at 100 GHz and 80 km single-mode fiber-28 transmission. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration to realize 100 Gb/s signal delivery through both fiber and wireless links at 100 GHz.

Abstract:This meta-analysis was conducted to analyze the effect of abdominal massage on gastrointestinal functions in the elderly. This literature search was conducted using the ClinicalKey, Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases to cover studies up to June 2022. The abdominal massage group had a large effect on reducing constipation severity and abdomen circumference. The abdominal massage had no effect on stool classification. The results indicated that abdominal massage for older people appears to be effective in reducing the severity of constipation and decreasing the abdominal circumference. These results can determine that abdominal massage can be used to reduce the severity of constipation and abdominal circumference.

Abstract:A highly purified, non-hemagglutinating PHA used in minimal blastogenic doses was non-toxic to established human lymphoid cell lines. PHA given at the beginning of primary culture or repeatedly throughout the initial six weeks of culture did not interfere with the establishment of peripheral lymphocytes in long-term suspension culture. Permanent cell lines have been obtained following weekly administration of PHA in blastogenic and subthreshold doses. Nonhemagglutinating PHA appeared to be non-toxic to these peripheral lymphocyte cultures and may increase their potential for long-term proliferation.

Effects of flaxseed supplementation on functional constipation and quality of life in a Chinese population: A randomized trial

Abstract:Background and objectives: This prospective, randomized, controlled study aimed to evaluate the effects of flaxseed supplementation on functional constipation and quality of life in adult men and women in China. Methods and study design: 90 subjects with functional constipation diagnosed by the Rome IV criteria were enrolled. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive either 50 g/day flaxseed flour with meals (n=60) or 15 mL/day of a lactulose solution on an empty stomach (n=30) every morning for 4 weeks. Wexner constipation scores, stool consistency according to the Bristol Stool Form Scale, and bowel habits (frequency of bowel movements/week, the time spent on defecation) were the primary outcomes. The change in Patient Assessment of Constipation Quality of Life score was the secondary outcome. Results: After 4 weeks, the bowel habits in both groups were significantly improved. The median Wexner constipation score decreased from 14 to 6.5 in the flaxseed group (p<0.001) and from 15 to 9 in the lactulose group (p<0.001). The median defecation frequency per week increased significantly (2 to 7 for flaxseed and 2 to 6 for lactulose, p<0.001 for both groups). The Patient Assessment of Constipation Quality of Life score decreased significantly (-1.34 and -0.66 for flaxseed and lactulose, respectively; p<0.001 for both groups). Conclusions: Flaxseed flour is somewhat more effective at increasing defecation frequency than lactulose, improving bowel movements and promoting life quality of subjects with chronic functional constipation in the Chinese population.
Abdominal massage for the alleviation of constipation symptoms in people with multiple sclerosis: a randomized controlled feasibility study

Abstract:Background: Constipation affects many people with multiple sclerosis (MS), negatively impacting on their quality of life. The use of abdominal massage has been reported in several populations and has been shown to increase the frequency of defaecation. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of undertaking abdominal massage in people with MS. Methods: Following ethical approval, 30 patients with MS and constipation were recruited. After providing informed written consent and completion of baseline outcome measures, participants were randomly allocated to a massage group or a control group. The massage group participants were provided with advice on bowel management, and they or their carers were taught how to deliver abdominal massage and were recommended to perform it daily during the 4-week intervention period. The control group received bowel management advice only. Outcomes were measured pre (Week 0) and post treatment (Week 4), and at Week 8 and included: the Constipation Scoring System (CSS) (primary outcome), the Neurogenic Bowel Dysfunction Score, and a bowel diary. Results: Both groups demonstrated a decrease in CSS score from Week 0 to Week 4, indicating an improvement in constipation symptoms; however, the massage group improved significantly more than the control groups (mean difference between groups in score change -5.0 (SD 1.5), 95% CI -8.1, -1.8; t = -3.28, df = 28, p = 0.003). Conclusion: The results of this small study suggest a positive effect of the intervention on the symptoms of constipation, and support the feasibility of a substantive trial of abdominal massage for the alleviation of the symptoms of constipation in people with MS.
Effectiveness of acupoint pressure on older people with constipation in nursing homes: a double-blind quasi-experimental study

Abstract:Aims: To compare the differences between acupoint pressure, abdominal massage and laxatives in treatment of constipation for residents in two nursing homes.Background: There is lack of evidence on the utility of complementary therapies in the management of constipation among older adults.Design: Quasi-experimental.Methods: A total of 90 participants from two nursing homes in Taiwan were assigned to three groups: the control group (with laxatives only), group I (with laxatives and abdominal massage) and group II (with laxatives, acupoint pressure therapy [APT] and abdominal massage). The intervention was performed over 10 days. A double-blind technique was applied in both participants and the outcome assessors. Constipation as main outcome was evaluated and recorded for 10 days. Observation of the frequency of defecation and the consistency, particularly firmness of faeces over each 24 h' period was recorded. The Transparent Reporting of Evaluations with Nonrandomized Designs (TREND) checklist was utilised in reporting methods and findings.Results: Three variations were revealed as interface factors and showed significant differences in each group. The results showed a statistically significant decrease in constipation in the experimental groups I and II. The scores of defecation frequency, difficulty degree and time of defecation, stool quality and awareness of defecation were obviously improved after treatment.Conclusions: We concluded APT could be used in conjunction with laxatives and must be considered as a long-term intervention. The combination of APT, abdominal massage and laxatives is superior to both abdominal massage with laxatives and laxatives alone.Relevance to clinical practice: Acupoint pressure as an effective complementary therapy of constipation among older adults living in nursing home provides a non-pharmacological, independent nursing intervention that nurses could use. This is relevant to nursing home settings where nurses make autonomous decision on important clinical assessments and interventions.

Abstract:Background: Constipation is a painful and serious condition that patients often find difficult to talk about. It is usually treated with laxatives alone. Aim: To determine whether abdominal massage is an effective treatment for constipation. METHOD Of 60 people with constipation, half received 15 minutes of abdominal and hand massage a day, five days a week, for eight weeks, as well as prescribed laxatives. The rest received prescribed laxatives only. Interviews with participants were also conducted. Results: Abdominal massage used with laxatives reduced abdominal pain, increased bowel movements and improved quality of life compared with laxative use alone. Patients reported positive experiences of abdominal massage but it did not reduce their laxative use. Conclusion: Abdominal massage was seen as a pleasant treatment that can be offered as an option in constipation management.

Abstract:Background: constipation is one of the most common non-motor features of Parkinson's affecting up to 90% of patients. In severe cases, it can lead to hospitalisation and is usually managed with laxatives which in themselves can lead to side effects. Abdominal massage has been used as adjunct in the management of constipation in various populations, but not in those with Parkinson's. Objective: the primary objective was to test the recruitment, retention and the appropriateness of the intervention methods and outcome measures. Methods: thirty-two patients with Parkinson's were recruited from three movement disorder clinics and were randomised to receive either 6 weeks of daily abdominal massage plus lifestyle advice on managing constipation (Intervention Group, n = 16) or lifestyle advice (Control Group, n = 16). Data were collected prior to group allocation (Baseline), at Week 6 (following intervention) and 4 weeks later (Week 10). Outcome tools included the Gastrointestinal Rating Scale and a bowel diary. Results: constipation has a negative impact on quality of life. The study recruited to target, retention was high and adherence to the study processes was good. The massage was undertaken as recommended during the 6 weeks of intervention with 50% continuing with the massage at 10 weeks. Participants in both groups demonstrated an improvement in symptoms, although this was not significantly different between the groups. Conclusion: abdominal massage, as an adjunct to management of constipation, offers an acceptable and potentially beneficial intervention to patients with Parkinson's.

Abstract:Background: Constipation is a prevalent adverse drug reaction during the treatment of mental illnesses. Traditional Chinese medicine boasts substantial expertise in addressing constipation. Objective: To investigate the impact of traditional Chinese medicine acupoint massage combined with acupoint application on the quality of life of patients experiencing solid heat constipation induced by psychogenic drugs. Design: This study employed a randomized controlled design. Setting: This study was conducted at the Seventh People's Hospital of Hangzhou. Participants: Between May 2019 and August 2020, 150 hospitalized patients from the Department of Psychiatry at the Seventh People's Hospital of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, were selected through convenience sampling. The clinical diagnosis type was intestinal solid fever. The patients were divided into three groups using a random number table method: observation group, intervention group 1, and intervention group 2, each consisting of 50 cases. Interventions: The observation group underwent acupoint massage combined with application treatment. Intervention group 1 received an acupoint massage. Intervention group 2 underwent Shenque acupoint application treatment. Primary outcome measures: (1) Defecation characteristics; (2) Defecation difficulty scores; and (3) Quality of life of patients. Results: The observation group exhibited superior improvement in Bristol constipation stool character and defecation difficulty compared to intervention group 1 and intervention group 2 (P < .05 and P < .01). In the quality-of-life assessment scale, the observation group outperformed intervention group 1 and intervention group 2 in physical, psychological, worry, and satisfaction aspects (P < .05 and P < .01). Conclusions: Traditional Chinese medicine acupoint massage combined with acupoint application demonstrates significant effects on constipation characteristics, defecation difficulties, and the overall quality of life of patients. These findings merit consideration for clinical application.
The effect of lifestyle modification on severity of constipation and quality of life of elders in nursing homes at Ismailia city, Egypt

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Constipation has a significant impact on the quality of life (QOL). Lifestyle modification is widely accepted and recommended by experts as first-line therapy.AIM: This study aimed at using education on lifestyle modification to improve the QOL of the elderly in nursing homes suffering from functional constipation (FC).MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted in nursing homes in Ismailia city, Egypt. It involved 23 elderly patients suffering from FC, who were randomly selected according to the sample equation. They fulfilled the inclusion criteria of being ≥60 years age and according to Rome II criteria. Participants completed personal characteristics and lifestyle questionnaire, the Patient Assessment of Constipation Symptom questionnaire (PAC-SYM) to assess the severity of symptoms, and the Patient Assessment of Constipation Quality of Life Questionnaire (PAC-QOL) to assess pre- and post-intervention. The intervention was conducted in three sessions, of 30 min each, 2 weeks apart using group discussions to educate the sample about dietary pattern, fluid intake, regular physical activity, and the use of laxatives.STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Data were analyzed using a statistical package for social sciences (SPSS version 20).RESULTS: The lifestyle modification education on constipation significantly reduced the severity of symptoms as measured by PAC-SYM, including its total score and subscores (P < 0.001). It also improved the QOL of elderly suffering from constipation as measured by PAC-QOL and reduced total scores of dissatisfaction (P = 0.001) with the exception of the psychosocial subscale. It also significantly increased the satisfaction subscale of PAC-SYM (P < 0.001).CONCLUSION: Education on lifestyle modification leads to an improvement in the severity of the symptoms of constipation and the QOL of the elderly in nursing homes.
