Abstract:The anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) has potential as a low-cost wastewater treatment process with the benefit of energy production. However, to ensure satisfactory treatment performance, an AnMBR is operated at a relatively high temperature currently. Research focused on the operation of the AnMBR at low temperature is significant since the energy required for heating is an impediment to the application of AnMBRs for municipal wastewater treatment. Hence, in this study, a constant low-temperature (15 °C) AnMBR was evaluated for the treatment of real municipal wastewater with hydraulic retention times (HRTs) in the range of 6–24 h. During the long-term experiment, a chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency of approximately 90.5% was obtained with a sludge yield below 0.13 g-VSS/g-CODrem at HRTs of 16 and 24 h. The amount of energy generated was theoretically calculated based on biogas production, with a high of 0.62 kWh/t. The energy balance analysis showed that the AnMBR process can be energy positive under the optimal operational conditions investigated. Membrane filtration performed well during operation at 15 °C with HRTs ranging between 12 and 24 h, while it was compromised at the extremely short HRT of 6h. In this study, the effectiveness of optimizing the conditions on the performance of the AnMBR operating at low temperature was confirmed, along with the potential for energy recoverability under those conditions.

Abstract:Ambient operation and large-scale demonstration have limited the implementation and evaluation of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) for low-strength wastewater treatment. Here, we studied these issues at an AnMBR demo plant that treats domestic wastewater and food waste together at ambient temperatures (7-28 °C). At varied hydraulic retention times (HRTs, 8-42 h), the AnMBR achieved a COD removal efficiency and biogas production of 80.4% ± 3.9% and 66.5 ± 9.4 NL/m3-Influent, respectively. Moreover, a stable high membrane flux of 14.4 L/m2/h was reached. The electric energy consumption for the AnMBR operation was 0.269-0.433 kW·h/m3, and 49.4%-91.3% could be compensated by the electric energy produced from methane production. At an HRT of 10 h, the AnMBR system demonstrated an impressively low net electric energy consumption of merely 0.05 kW·h/m3, resulting in a net greenhouse gas emission of 0.015 CO2-eq/m3, cutting 85% compared to the conventional activated sludge process. Achievements in this study provide key parameters for the ambient operation of AnMBR and demonstrate that AnMBR is an energy-saving and low-carbon solution for low-strength wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Concerns regarding membrane fouling and suboptimal bioenergy recovery have constrained the implementation of anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) for treating low-strength municipal wastewater. This study presents a novel anaerobic cathodic dynamic membrane bioreactor (AnCDMBR) designed to address these challenges. A self-formed cathodic dynamic membrane (CDM) on inexpensive carbon cloth was developed to function as both a membrane and biocathode to achieve dual-function effects of mitigating membrane fouling and accelerating organics conversion. Compared with common dynamic membrane (1.52 kPa/d) and commercial membranes (7.52 kPa/d), the developed CDM presented a significantly reduced fouling rate (1.02 kPa/d), exhibiting the potential as a substitute for high-cost conductive membranes. Furthermore, efficient and stable biomethanation occurred in AnCDMBR with a superior methane yield rate of 0.26 L-CH4/g-COD (CH4 content > 95 %), which was 1.42 times higher than the control, linked to the higher activities of microbial metabolism and methanogenic-related key enzymes. Further analysis revealed that electrostimulation-induced niche differentiation of microbiota regulated interspecies interactions between electroactive microorganisms and complex anaerobic digestion microbiomes, facilitating organic matter conversion to methane and leading to superior bioenergy recovery. This study offered a new strategy for effectively mitigating fouling and recovering bioenergy from low-strength wastewater, potentially expanding the application of AnMBRs.

Abstract:A 5,000-L anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) fed with actual municipal wastewater was employed to study the impact of temperature drops on methanogenic performance and membrane fouling. With temperature dropped from 25°C to 15°C, the methane yield decreased from 0.244 to 0.205 NL-CH4/g-CODremoval and the dissolved methane increased from 29% to 43%, resulted in the methanogenic performance reduced by 25%. The membrane rejection offset the deteriorated anaerobic digestion at low temperatures and ensured the stable COD removal efficiency of 84.5%-90.0%. The synergistic effects of the increased microbial products and viscosity and the residual inorganic foulants aggravated the membrane fouling at lower temperatures. As the organic fouling was easily removed by NaClO, the inorganics related to the elements of S, Ca, Fe were the stubborn membrane foulants and required the enhanced acid membrane cleaning. These findings obtained under the quasi-practical condition are expected to promote the practical applications of mainstream AnMBR.

Abstract:A laboratory scale anaerobic bioreactor coupled with a membrane filtration device was investigated for treating domestic wastewater at ambient temperature. The system was capable of achieving over 97% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal with effluent of COD less than 20 mg l(-1) on the average at volumetric organic loadings ranging from 0.5 to 12.5 kg m(-3) d(-1), and had a strong tolerance to wastewater temperature variation. Due to the effective retention of biomass within the bioreactor with a membrane, the sludge concentration in the anaerobic bioreactor could be kept at a high level between 16 and 22.5 g l(-1). Membrane permeability was largely affected by intermittent suction mode and membrane flux. A stable operation could be maintained continuously over 2 weeks without any cleaning at a operational mode of 4 min pumping and 1 min non-pumping, and a membrane flux of 5 l m(-2) h(-1). Abstract:The application of anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) process for low-carbon and sustainable municipal wastewater (MWW) treatment is still hindered by membrane fouling and dissolved methane issues, while optimizing operational mode for efficient fouling mitigation and modelling the liquid-gaseous phase equilibrium of multicomponent biogas are still not well understood. To address this gap, a 20-L submerged AnMBR was operated for the treatment of real MWW over a 200 d operation period, divided into three phases according to the variations of operational flux (5, 8 and 11 L/m2h) and intermittent filtration mode (filtration to relaxation time (F/R) ratios of 3:1, 4:1, 5:1 and 9:1). The AnMBR showed a stable COD removal (∼85%), satisfactory methane production (∼0.07 LCH4/L-wastewater), and a high methane content of 80% regardless of filtration mode. A theoretical model was successfully developed to simulate the liquid-gaseous phase equilibrium of the multicomponent biogas, which can quantitatively predict the origin and phase distribution of biogas with high accuracy and also determine the saturation index of dissolved methane in the range of 0.8–1.1. At low-flux conditions (5 and 8 LMH), the transmembrane pressure (TMP) remained at low values of 0.5–1.0 kPa, and was not affected by changed F/R ratios. However, at the higher flux of 11 LMH, the TMP increase was obvious at F/R ratios of 3:1 and 9:1, and larger than that at F/R ratios of 4:1 and 5:1. A higher instantaneous flux and shorter relaxation time resulted in substantial irreversible fouling caused by a high-flux induced drag force and insufficient detachment of foulants, while periodical in-situ chemical cleaning allowed a sustainable operation with irreversible fouling successfully mitigated. The results recommended optimized filtration mode for cost-effective fouling control and highlighted the importance of dissolved methane management, which are expected to support large-scale AnMBR implementations for mainstream MWW treatment towards low fouling operation and efficient bioenergy recovery.

Abstract:The present study introduced a new method for enhanced biomethane production and pollution control of swine wastewater (SW) using anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). Results confirmed 35 °C as the optimum temperature for enhanced anaerobic digestion which resulted in relatively higher methane production rate and potential. In AnMBR system, robust pollutants removal and conversion rate were achieved under various hydraulic retention time (HRT) ranging from 20 to 10 days, while the highest methane yield (0.24 L/g-CODremoved) and microbial activity (6.65 mg-COD/g-VSS·h) were recorded at HRT of 15 days. Reduction of HRT to 10 days resulted in serious membrane fouling due to accumulation of extracellularpolymericsubstances(EPS) and cake layer on the membrane. However, cake layer as the dominant membrane foulant could be effectively removed through periodic physical backwash to recover the membrane permeability. Overall, the suggested AnMBR is a promising technology to enhance SW treatment and energy recovery.

Abstract:Developing low-carbon advanced processes for sustainable wastewater treatment is of great importance to increase bioenergy recovery and to reduce the greenhouse gas effect. In this study, the influence of adding 25 g/L of granular activated carbon (GAC) on the process performance was studied with a lab-scale GAC amended anaerobic dynamic membrane (G-AnDMBR) used to treat real domestic wastewater, which was compared to a control bioreactor without the GAC addition (C-AnDMBR). Due to the initial adsorption effect of GAC and the high microbial activity of the attached biomass of GAC, the G-AnDMBR achieved a better removal of the total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) and turbidity compared to the C-AnDMBR, with the average removal rate increasing from 82.1% to 86.7% and from 88.7% to 93.2%. The gaseous methane production increased from 0.08 ± 0.05 to 0.14 ± 0.04 L/d, and the total methane production rate was enhanced from 0.21 ± 0.11 to 0.23 ± 0.09 LCH4/gCOD. Thus, the treatment performance of the G-AnDMBR was superior to that of the C-AnDMBR, and the addition of GAC could improve the effluent quality during the initial dynamic membrane formation process. In addition, the buffering effect of GAC made the G-AnDMBR maintain a relatively stable solution environment. The G-AnDMBR showed a transmembrane pressure (TMP) increasing rate of 0.045 kPa/d, which was obviously lower than that of the C-AnDMBR (0.057 kPa/d) because the nonfluidized GAC could trap fine sludge particles and adsorb soluble extracellular polymer substances (SEPSs), thus inhibiting the over formation of the dynamic membrane layer. A microbial property analysis indicated that GAC induced a change in the microbial community and enhanced the gene abundance of type IV pili and that it also potentially accelerated the direct interspecific electron transfer (DIET) among syntrophic bacteria and methanogens by enriching specific functional microorganisms. The results indicated that the integration of GAC and the AnDMBR process can be a cost-effective and promising alternative for domestic wastewater treatment and bioenergy recovery.

Abstract:To enhance the substrate conversion efficiency and further improve the reactor stability of codigestion with waste activated sludge (WAS) and food waste (FW), a new type of anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor (AnDMBR) was designed and operated in parallel with a conventional continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) for approximately 500 days. The results showed that a higher methane yield (330–350 mL/g COD) was realized in the AnDMBR than in the CSTR (96–326 mL/g COD) under the same organic loading rates (OLRs) in the range of 8.16–22.8 g COD/L/d, which was consistent with the high methane production, specific methanogenic activity, coenzyme F420 concentration, and stable pH in the AnDMBR. Furthermore, the dynamic membrane performance of the AnDMBR was compared with that of the CSTR system; the measured characteristics, including the particle diameter and suspended solid concentration in the permeate or discharge sludge, suggested that the substrate and microorganisms can both be effectively intercepted by the dynamic membrane during long-term periodic operation. 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing analysis indicated that the microbiological community structures in the AnDMBR and CSTR were similar, but the relative abundances of dominant bacteria (Treponema and Lutispora) and archaea (Methanoculleus) in the AnDMBR were both higher than those in the CSTR. This difference in relative abundance is the main reason why the AnDMBR enhanced the biogas conversion efficiency and stability of mesophilic codigestion with WAS and FW, other than substrate retention by the dynamic membrane. A comparison of the microbial metabolism functions of the AnDMBR and CSTR showed that the proportions of carbohydrate/coenzyme transport and metabolism and signal transduction mechanisms in the AnDMBR with stainless steel mesh were significantly improved after long-term parallel operation.

Abstract:The anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) has gained huge attention as a municipal wastewater (MWW) treatment process that combined high organics removal, a low sludge yield and bioenergy recovery. In this study, a 20 L AnMBR was set up and operated steadily for 70 days in temperate conditions with an HRT of 6 h and a flux of 12 LMH for the treatment of real MWW, focusing on the behavior of the major elements (C, N, P and S) from an elemental balance perspective. The results showed that the AnMBR achieved more than 85 % COD removal, a low sludge yield (0.081 gVSS/gCOD removed ) and high methane production (0.31 L-CH 4 /gCOD removed ) close to the theoretical value. The elemental flow analysis revealed that the AnMBR converted 77 % of the influent COD to methane (57 % gaseous and 20 % dissolved) and 6 % of the COD for sludge production. In addition, the AnMBR converted 34 % of the total carbon to energy-generated carbon, and only 3 % was in the form of CO 2 in the biogas for further upgradation, which was in line with the concept of carbon neutrality. Since little nitrogen or phosphorus were removed, the permeate was nutrient-rich and further treatment to recover the nutrients would be required. This study illustrates the superior performance of the AnMBR for MWW treatment with a microscopic view of elemental behavior and provides a reference for implementing the mainstream AnMBR process in carbon-neutral wastewater treatment plants.

Abstract:Anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) has been applied as a promising technology for treating a variety of industrial wastewaters. Nevertheless, the potential of AnMBR for methanolic wastewater treatment is still not well recognized. In this study, a lab-scale AnMBR fed with low-strength methanolic wastewater was operated for 166 days with stepwise decreased HRT, and the roles of colloidal particles and soluble biopolymers in membrane fouling behaviors were elucidated comprehensively. The results showed that AnMBR showed the desirable performance and process stability with total chemical oxygen demand removal of 89.8 ± 1.1% and the highest methane production rate of 5.49 L/L-reactor/d at organic loading rate of 20.00 g-COD/L-reactor/d and hydraulic retention time of 18 h. The serious membrane fouling was observed after a period of operation at low HRT or high OLR due to the production of colloidal particles and the liberation of soluble biopolymers. Decreased particle size, and increased adhesion forces of gel-like flocs caused by the secretion of hydrophobic protein-bearing biopolymers accelerated the deposition of foulants and the formation of cake layer, inducing the easily mitigated membrane fouling. Further observations proved that the main bioconversion pathway of methanolic wastewater to biomethane was methylotrophic methanogenesis, followed by acetotrophic/hydrogenotrophic processes. Collectively, although the membrane fouling cannot be eliminated, this research confirmed the technical feasibility of AnMBR for methanolic wastewater treatment in real-world applications.

Abstract:AbstractAnaerobic digestion (AD) plays an important role in waste activated sludge (WAS) treatment; however, conventional AD (CAD) process needs substantial improvements, especially for the treatment of WAS with low solids content and poor anaerobic biodegradability. Herein, we propose a submerged anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor (AnDMBR) for simultaneous WAS thickening and digestion without any pretreatment. During the long-term operation, the AnDMBR exhibited an enhanced sludge reduction and improved methane production over CAD process. Moreover, the biogas generated in the AnDMBR contained higher methane content than CAD process. Stable carbon isotopic signatures elucidated the occurrence of combined methanogenic pathways in the AnDMBR process, in which hydrogenotrophic methanogenic pathway made a larger contribution to the total methane production. It was also found that organic matter degradation was enhanced in the AnDMBR, thus providing more favorable substrates for microorganisms. Pyrosequencing revealed that Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were abundant in bacterial communities and Methanosarcina and Methanosaeta in archaeal communities, which played an important role in the AnDMBR system. This study shed light on the enhanced digestion of WAS using AnDMBR technology.

Abstract:The improvement of organic sludge destruction efficiency and methanogenic performance is a key concern during anaerobic digestion toward maximum energy recovery. In this study, a high-solid anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) was operated continuously for the treatment of organic sludge from Japanese small-scale collective wastewater treatment facility (Johkasou), and digestion efficiency was enhanced by the optimizing solid retention time (SRT). Degradation efficiency of the substrate improved from 36 % to 52 % and the biogas yield was enhanced from 0.37 to 0.51 L/g-VSfed when the SRT was extended from 30 to 60 d. The net energy yield of AnMBR at SRT 60 days was 9.83 kJ/g-VSfed, and the corresponding energy sufficiency ratio was 181 %, indicating that SRT extension could enhance substrate destruction with significant energy recovery potential. However, a long SRT is characterized by high mixed liquor total solids (MLTS), small particle size, high extracellular polymeric substances content, and poor filterability, which exert detrimental effects on membrane operation. Membrane fouling was effectively controlled by regulating the flux at a sustainable rate. The low fouling region and transition region of operating flux were determined as 0.21-4.6 L/m2/h (LMH) and 1.5-5.7 LMH, respectively, when MLTS was 25-50 g/L, and the main contributors to membrane fouling were high protein fractions and small sludge flocs. The current study proposes a promising method to promote digestion efficiency and provided adequate guidance for membrane operation at super-high MLTS by presenting practical engineering applications of AnMBRs in solid waste treatment.

Abstract:The aim of this work was to demonstrate the operation of a large pilot-scale submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (5.0 m3) for biogas production from municipal wastewater at ambient temperature of 25 °C. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest one-stage submerged AnMBR that has ever been reported. This AnMBR realized a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6 h and a treatment capacity of 20 m3 d-1, obtaining excellent effluent quality with COD removal efficiency over 90% and BOD5 removal over 95%. The biogas yield of the AnMBR was 0.25–0.27 L g−1 removed COD and 0.09–0.10 L L-1 raw wastewater. The methane content of the biogas was at the range of 75%-81%. The COD and nitrogen mass balance were also identified based on long-term operation. The hollow-fiber membrane module realized a flux of 2.75–17.83 LMH. An online backwash chemical cleaning system helped to lower the transmembrane pressure timely.

Performance and Microbial Community of a Novel Combined Anaerobic Bioreactor Integrating Anaerobic Baffling and Anaerobic Filtration Process for Low-Strength Rural Wastewater Treatment

Abstract:A novel combined bioreactor integrating anaerobic baffling and anaerobic filtration process was developed and operated for 210 days to treat low-strength rural wastewater. The effects of hydraulic residence time (HRT) and organic loading rate (OLR) on chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and methane (CH4) production of the combined bioreactor were investigated. The combined bioreactor can start up successfully in 25 days and achieve enhanced performance. The COD removal rate and CH4 yield were influenced significantly by HRT and OLR. The influent COD was removed effectively through the synergistic effects of the anaerobic baffling and anaerobic filtration. The baffle zone played the main role in the degradation of the pollutants, and the filter zone mainly contributed to improve the resistance to shock loading. High-throughput sequencing technology was used to analyze the bacterial and archaeal community structure and diversity. Clostridium_sensu_stricto, Longilinea, Acetoanaerobium, Arcobacter, and Acinetobacter were found to be the dominant bacteria. While Methanothrix and Methanoregula were the dominant archaea, which were responsible for methane generation. This study not only highlights the good energy recovery and resource utilization potential of the combined bioreactor but also presents significant guidance for the application of the combined anaerobic process for low-strength rural wastewater treatment.
Optimization of membrane filtration and cleaning strategy in a high solid thermophilic AnMBR treating food waste

Abstract:Anaerobic membrane bioreactor is advantageous over traditional processes for food waste treatment, i.e. short retention time, high loading rate, and particulate clean permeate. However, establishing a sustainable membrane filtration is a long-standing challenge because of its high viscosity and solids concentration characteristics. Therefore, this study investigated the changes in the membrane permeability before and after the cleaning during a 130-day thermophilic anaerobic experiment. Results show that the AnMBR system could maintain high stability even under a short HRT of 10 days and OLR of 9.0 kg-COD/(m 3 ·d) with low volatile fatty acid of 50 mg/L. The membrane filtration deteriorates with the concurrence of a sharp increase of viscosity when the volatile solids reached 23 g/L. A critical flux was achieved at 5.5 L/(m 2 ·h) under optimized operation conditions, membrane filtration/relaxing ratio with less than 4:1 at a hydraulic retention time of 15 d. Membrane fouling can be removed by soaking the membrane in NaClO (1 g/L, 15 h) and citric acid (2 g/L, 2 h). Conclusively, this work provides insight to establish the operation strategy for a thermophilic AnMBR treating food waste.

Abstract:To support smart city in terms of municipal waste management and bioenergy recovery, a high-solid anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) was developed for sewage sludge (SeS) and food waste (FW) treatment in this study. COD mass balance showed that 54.1%, 66.9%, 73.5%, 91.4% and 93.5% of the COD input was converted into methane at the FW ratio of 0, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, respectively. The corresponding net energy balance was 13.6, 14.1, 17.1, 22.9 and 27.4 kJ/g-VS, respectively. An important finding of this investigation was that, for the first time, the relationship between net energy balance and the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio was revealed and the established sigmoid-type function was shown to be capable of predicting energy balance at different C/N ratios regardless of the region. The outcomes of this study show the potential of high-solid AnMBRs in SeS and FW treatment for supporting smart cities in the future.

Membrane biofilm development improves COD removal in anaerobic membrane bioreactor wastewater treatment

Abstract:Membrane biofilm development was evaluated to improve psychrophilic (15°C) anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) treatment of domestic wastewater. An AnMBR containing three replicate submerged membrane housings with separate permeate collection was operated at three levels of membrane fouling by independently controlling biogas sparging for each membrane unit. High membrane fouling significantly improved permeate quality, but resulted in dissolved methane in the permeate at a concentration two to three times the equilibrium concentration predicted by Henry's law. Illumina sequencing of 16S rRNA targeting Bacteria and Archaea and reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction targeting the methyl coenzyme-M reductase (mcrA) gene in methanogens indicated that the membrane biofilm was enriched in highly active methanogens and syntrophic bacteria. Restoring fouled membranes to a transmembrane pressure (TMP) near zero by increasing biogas sparging did not disrupt the biofilm's treatment performance, suggesting that microbes in the foulant layer were tightly adhered and did not significantly contribute to TMP. Dissolved methane oversaturation persisted without high TMP, implying that methanogenesis in the biofilm, rather than high TMP, was the primary driving force in methane oversaturation. The results describe an attractive operational strategy to improve treatment performance in low-temperature AnMBR by supporting syntrophy and methanogenesis in the membrane biofilm through controlled membrane fouling.

Abstract:Urged by the requirement for sustainable development, the recovery of energy and resources from sewage is imperative. In this study, a lab-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) treating chemically pre-concentrated real sewage with a high content of carbon, phosphorus, and iron in sidestream was established, and its performance at organic loading rate (OLR) varied from 0.67 to 2 g-COD/(L & sdot;d) was assessed comprehensively. When OLR <= 1.33 g-COD/(L & sdot;d), it achieved high COD removal (-99 %), and around 60 % of the total influent COD was converted to methane (0.21 L-CH4/g-CODinf). Gaseous methane accounted for up to 95 % of the biogas. Only 1.5 % of yield methane was lost in permeate, far less than the dissolved methane in AnMBR treating sewage in mainstream. Considerable phosphorus (85 %-98 %) was retained in AnMBR. When OLR reached 2 g-COD/(L & sdot;d), the treatment performance was exacerbated with volatile fatty acids accumulation. The sludge flocs disintegrated with smaller particle sizes. The microbial community of mixed liquor shifted towards that of the pre-concentrated sewage. A specific relative abundance of Epsilonbacteraeota (a biomarker in this research) can be set as a warning of overloading. Compared with AnMBRs treating sewage in the mainstream, this sidestream AnMBR provided a new perspective and paradigm for treating sewage in an energy-efficient, resource-recovered, and low-carbon way.
One-year operation of a 20-L submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor for real domestic wastewater treatment at room temperature: Pursuing the optimal HRT and sustainable flux

Abstract:A 20 L hollow-fiber submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (SAnMBR) was used to treat real domestic wastewater at 25 °C with hydraulic retention times (HRTs) ranging from 4 to 12 h. The process performance was evaluated by organic removal efficiency, biogas production, sludge yield, and filtration behaviors during one-year's operation. For HRTs ranging between 6 and 12 h, the AnMBR showed good organic removal efficiency with chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) removal efficiencies of about 89% and 93%, respectively. The biogas yield was 0.26 L-gas/g-CODfed, with approximately 80% methane content, and the sludge yield was 0.07–0.11 g-VSS/g-CODrem. While at an HRT of 4 h, with the higher wastewater treatment capacity and organic loading rate (OLR), the biogas production was lower (0.17 L-gas/g-CODfed), and the sludge production was higher (0.22 g-VSS/g-CODrem). The organic removal performance (COD 84% and BOD 89%) at HRT of 4 h was acceptable due to the effective separation effect of the membrane filtration process. According to COD balance analysis, the low biogas yield and high sludge yield at HRT of 4 h were due to insufficient biodegradation under an OLR of 2.05 g-COD/L-reactor/d. Theoretical calculations based on Henry's law indicate that the ideal methane content in the biogas should be 82–85% when the operational temperature was 25 °C. To achieve a high flux and sustainable AnMBR operation, the impact of mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) and gas sparging velocity (GSV) on the filtration performance was analyzed. The critical flux increased with increase in the GSV from 24.2 to 174.3 m/h, but decreased with increase in the MLSS concentration from 8.2 to 20.2 g/L. Therefore, decreasing fouling rate to 0.8–1.2 kPa/d by efficiently controlling GSV and MLSS, sustainable operation could be achieved at a flux of 0.34 m/d.
