Abstract:The existing auditory computational models for evaluating speech intelligibility can only account for energetic masking, and the effect of informational masking is rarely described in these models. This study was aimed to make a computational model considering the mechanism of informational masking. Several psychoacoustic experiments were conducted to test the effect of informational masking on speech intelligibility by manipulating the number of masking talker, speech rate, and the similarity of F0 contour between target and masker. The results showed that the speech reception threshold for the target increased as the F0 contours of the masker became more similar to that of the target, suggesting that the difficulty in segregating the target harmonics from the masker harmonics may underlie the informational masking effect. Based on these studies, a new auditory computational model was made by inducing the auditory function of harmonic extraction to the traditional model of speech intelligibility index (SII), named as harmonic extraction (HF) model. The predictions of the HF model are highly consistent with the experimental results.

Abstract:Purpose: In the context of a cocktail party listening environment, the processing of different linguistic hierarchy levels in unattended speech and their influence on target speech recognition remain controversial. This study aims to investigate how different levels of linguistic structures (such as syllable, word, and sentence) in competing speech influence the recognition of target speech in a speech-to-speech masking situation. Method: Thirty-six participants were instructed to recognize target speech when it was masked by competing speech varied in masking types across syllables, words, and sentence. The perceived spatial location was altered to examine the interaction between linguistic unmasking effects and spatial unmasking effects. Recognition performance (i.e., intelligibility threshold) was determined by fitting psychometric functions to the recognition accuracies across four signal-to-noise ratios (−14, −10, −6, and − 2 dB) to evaluate each subject's ability to cope with challenging listening conditions. Results: We revealed a significant decline in target speech recognition when the masking speech was linguistically structured and intelligible. Specifically, masking speech with higher linguistic complexity, such as coherent sentences, resulted in more significant interference compared to those with lower complexity, like sequences of syllables. The linguistic release from masking, resulting from a decrease in linguistic complexity of maskers shifting from sentences to syllables, was found to be correlated with, and also linearly additive to, the spatial release from masking due to the spatial separation of the masker and target. Conclusions: These findings illustrate the influence of linguistic complexity in masking speech on the recognition of target speech, suggesting the involvement of higher-level linguistic processing of irrelevant speech in noisy environment.

Abstract:This study investigated whether speech-like maskers without linguistic content produce informational masking of speech. The target stimuli were nonsense Chinese Mandarin sentences. In experiment I, the masker contained harmonics the fundamental frequency (F0) of which was sinusoidally modulated and the mean F0 of which was varied. The magnitude of informational masking was evaluated by measuring the change in intelligibility (releasing effect) produced by inducing a perceived spatial separation of the target speech and masker via the precedence effect. The releasing effect was small and was only clear when the target and masker had the same mean F0, suggesting that informational masking was small. Performance with the harmonic maskers was better than with a steady speech-shaped noise (SSN) masker. In experiments II and III, the maskers were speech-like synthesized signals, alternating between segments with harmonic structure and segments composed of SSN. Performance was much worse than for experiment I, and worse than when an SSN masker was used, suggesting that substantial informational masking occurred. The similarity of the F0 contours of the target and masker had little effect. The informational masking effect was not influenced by whether or not the noise-like segments of the masker were synchronous with the unvoiced segments of the target speech. Abstract:Auditory masking—the interference of the encoding and processing of an acoustic stimulus imposed by one or more competing stimuli—is nearly omnipresent in daily life, and presents a critical barrier to many listeners, including people with hearing loss, users of hearing aids and cochlear implants, and people with auditory processing disorders. The perceptual aspects of masking have been actively studied for several decades, and particular emphasis has been placed on masking of speech by other speech sounds. The neural effects of such masking, especially at the subcortical level, have been much less studied, in large part due to the technical limitations of making such measurements. Recent work has allowed estimation of the auditory brainstem response (ABR), whose characteristic waves are linked to specific subcortical areas, to naturalistic speech. In this study, we used those techniques to measure the encoding of speech stimuli that were masked by one or more simultaneous other speech stimuli. We presented listeners with simultaneous speech from one, two, three, or five simultaneous talkers, corresponding to a range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNR; Clean, 0, -3, and -6 dB), and derived the ABR to each talker in the mixture. Each talker in a mixture was treated in turn as a target sound masked by other talkers, making the response quicker to acquire. We found consistently across listeners that ABR wave V amplitudes decreased and latencies increased as the number of competing talkers increased.

Abstract:Informational masking (IM) occurs when target speech is co-presented with competing speech. It is important to know what acoustic characteristics of a speech masker are essential to induce IM. This study investigated whether frequency modulation (FM) of speech is associated with IM. Nonsense Chinese Mandarin sentences were spoken by a young female as target stimuli and maskers were tone harmonics whose fundamental frequency (F0) was modulated sinusoidally and number of harmonic streams was varied. The magnitude of IM was evaluated by measuring the precedence-induced releasing effect of perceived spatial separation on target speech. The results show that the releasing effect reached the highest level when F0 became 252 Hz, which was the mean pitch of target speech. In addition, the releasing effect was significantly higher when the masker contained two harmonic streams than when one stream. These results suggest that because frequency-modulated harmonics can be used to inducing IM of speech, the FM component of speech is an important acoustic factor underlying IM. Abstract:To study the role of F0 contour on speech intelligibility for Mandarin Chinese, speech reception thresholds (SRTs) of mono-tone speech and multi-tone speech were measured both in steady speech-spectrum noise (SSN) and in two-talkers’ speech (TTS). The effect of informational masking (IM) in TTS masking was also examined. The mono-tone speech was produced by mono-tone sentences, which only consisted of syllables with tone 1 or tone 0. All sentences used in this study were grammatically correct but semantically anomalous to avoid the effect of sentence context. The type of TTS maskers was also manipulated as mono-tone or multi-tone. The results revealed: 1) For SSN masking, there was no significant difference between the mono-tone speech and the multi-tone speech (-7.8 dB vs. -7.3 dB on SRTs), indicating a weak effect of altering F0 contour at the sentence level. 2) However, for TTS masking, the intelligibility of multi-tone speech in multi-tone masking was significantly difficult (2 dB increase for SRT) than other conditions, indicating an important role of F0 contour in IM. These results were different from the corresponding reports for English speech, and the characteristics of F0 contour and language were analyzed and discussed. [supported by a NSFC grant 61473008.]

Abstract:In Mandarin Chinese, the fundamental frequency (F0) contour defines lexical "Tones" that differ in meaning despite being phonetically identical. Flattening the F0 contour impairs the intelligibility of Mandarin Chinese in background sounds. This might occur because the flattening introduces misleading lexical information. To avoid this effect, two types of speech were used: single-Tone speech contained Tones 1 and 0 only, which have a flat F0 contour; multi-Tone speech contained all Tones and had a varying F0 contour. The intelligibility of speech in steady noise was slightly better for single-Tone speech than for multi-Tone speech. The intelligibility of speech in a twotalker masker, with the difference in mean F0 between the target and masker matched across conditions, was worse for the multi-Tone target in the multi-Tone masker than for any other combination of target and masker, probably because informational masking was maximal for this combination. The introduction of a perceived spatial separation between the target and masker, via the precedence effect, led to better performance for all target-masker combinations, especially the multiTone target in the multi-Tone masker. In summary, a flat F0 contour does not reduce the intelligibility of Mandarin Chinese when the introduction of misleading lexical cues is avoided. (C) 2018 Acoustical Society of America.

Abstract:The relevance of masking release by comodulation and interaural phase difference (IPD) for speech perception is still unclear. We used speech-like stimuli to link spectro-temporal properties of formants with masking release. The stimuli comprised a tone and three masker bands centered at formant frequencies F1, F2, and F3 derived from a consonant-vowel (/gu/, /fu/, and /pu/). The target was a diotic or dichotic frequency-modulated tone following F2 trajectories. Results showed no statistically significant comodulation masking release (CMR), while the binaural masking level difference (BMLD) was comparable to previous findings. The data suggest that factors other than comodulation may play a dominant role in grouping frequency components in speech.

Abstract:Speech understanding is influenced by not only the presence, but also the specific nature of maskers. Noise maskers primarily result in energetic masking, whereas speech maskers create additional interference due to linguistic and acoustic similarities to target speech. The present study examined the influence of different types of maskers and target word position on the immediate recall of words in sentences by normal-hearing younger adults. In Experiment 1, nonsense sentences with 3 keywords (e.g., A "house" should "dash" to the "bowl".) were presented against a background of speech-spectrum noise or two-talker nonsense speech. With the speech masker, accuracy increased with word position in a linear fashion. With the speech-spectrum noise masker, performance was highest for the first word but the same for the second keyword and third keyword. In Experiment 2, when the speech-masker was noise-vocoded to preserve envelope information while disrupting fine structure cues and minimizing semantic content, performance was similar to that found with the speech-spectrum noise masker. The results suggest that the ability to track a target sentence in conditions of informational masking improves as the target utterance unfolds over time.

Abstract:Fundamental frequency difference limens (F0DLs) were measured for a target harmonic complex tone with nominal fundamental frequency (F0) of 200 Hz, in the presence and absence of a harmonic masker with overlapping spectrum. The F0 of the masker was 0, ± 3, or ± 6 semitones relative to 200 Hz. The stimuli were bandpass filtered into three regions: 0-1000 Hz (low, L), 1600-2400 Hz (medium, M), and 2800-3600 Hz (high, H), and a background noise was used to mask combination tones and to limit the audibility of components falling on the filter skirts. The components of the target or masker started either in cosine or random phase. Generally, the effect of F0 difference between target and masker was small. For the target alone, F0DLs were larger for random than cosine phase for region H. For the target plus masker, F0DLs were larger when the target had random phase than cosine phase for regions M and H. F0DLs increased with increasing center frequency of the bandpass filter. Modeling using excitation patterns and "summary autocorrelation" and "stabilized auditory image" models suggested that use of temporal fine structure information can account for the small F0DLs obtained when harmonics are barely, if at all, resolved.
Combined Manipulations of the Perceived Location and Spatial Extent of the Speech-Target Image Predominantly Affect Speech-on-speech Masking

Abstract:Speech maskers contain both informational-masking and energetic-masking components. To fully understand speech masking, it is critical to separate these two types of masking components. This study investigated the effect of the inter-target-source delay (ITSD) on intelligibility of speech when both the speech target and masker were presented by each of the two spatially separated loudspeakers (located at −45 and +45 degrees, respectively). The masker was either two-voice speech (different contents between the two loudspeakers) or steady-state speech-spectrum-noise (uncorrelated between the two loudspeakers). The results show that as the ITSD was decreased from 64 to 0 ms, the target image progressively became funneled into the region around the midline, and the intelligibility of the target was monotonically improved by over 40% when the masker was speech, but by only about 10% when the masker was noise. Under the quiet condition, however, the intelligibility was not affected by the change of ITSD. The results suggest that combined manipulations of perceived location and spatial extent of the speech-target image by changing the ITSD predominantly affect informational masking of speech. Recognition of Mandarin Chinese in Noisy, Reverberant Environments

Abstract:Cochlear-implant users partially recover their speech intelligibility in quiet but not in a noisy, reverberant environment, particularly for those speaking tonal languages, for which semantic information is also expressed by pitch contour. To improve cochlear-implant algorithms for tonal-language users, we have investigated speech recognition in Mandarin-Chinese speaking listeners under adverse listening condition to address four issues related to perceptual fusion and informational masking. First, to what extent do Chinese speech and non-speech sounds differ with respect to the tendency of perceptual fusion (between direct and reflected waves)? Second, why does perceptual separation provide a smaller release from informational masking in Mandarin Chinese than in English? Third, can the use of the recently developed simulated phase-locking stimulation strategy (SPLS, which extracts both phase and amplitude-envelope information) improve speech perception in Mandarin-speaking cochlear-implant patients compared to the continuous interleaved sampling strategy (CIS) currently in use? Fourth, does the prior presentation of a sentence spoken in quiet, by the same person who immediately afterwards produces a masked target sentence, improve identification of the masked target (voice priming) only for tonal-language speaking listeners?
Combination of binaural and harmonic masking release effects in the detection of a single component in complex tones

Abstract:Both harmonic and binaural signal properties are relevant for auditory processing. To investigate how these cues combine in the auditory system, detection thresholds for an 800-Hz tone masked by a diotic (i.e., identical between the ears) harmonic complex tone were measured in six normal-hearing subjects. The target tone was presented either diotically or with an interaural phase difference (IPD) of 180 degree and in either harmonic or "mistuned" relationship to the diotic masker. Three different maskers were used, a resolved and an unresolved complex tone (fundamental frequency: 160 and 40 Hz) with four components below and above the target frequency and a broadband unresolved complex tone with 12 additional components. The target IPD provided release from masking in most masker conditions, whereas mistuning led to a significant release from masking only in the diotic conditions with the resolved and the narrowband unresolved maskers. A significant effect of mistuning was neither found in the diotic condition with the wideband unresolved masker nor in any of the dichotic conditions. An auditory model with a single analysis frequency band and different binaural processing schemes was employed to predict the data of the unresolved masker conditions. Sensitivity to modulation cues was achieved by including an auditory-motivated modulation filter in the processing pathway. The predictions of the diotic data were in line with the experimental results and literature data in the narrowband condition, but not in the broadband condition, suggesting that across-frequency processing is involved in processing modulation information. The experimental and model results in the dichotic conditions show that the binaural processor cannot exploit modulation information in binaurally unmasked conditions.

Factors that facilitate stream segregation can greatly reducethe extent of informational masking. However, stream segregation often takes time to develop. In Experiment 1, nonsense sentences with 3 keywords were presented against a background of speech-spectrum noise or two-talker nonsense speech. With the speech masker, accuracy increased with word position. With the noise masker, accuracy did not vary systematically with word position. In Experiment 2, we noise-vocoded the speech masker using three bands to preserve envelope information while disrupting fine structure cues and minimizing semantic content. Here, performance was similar to that found with the noise masker. The results suggest that the ability to track a target sentence in conditions of informational masking improves as the target utterance unfolds over time.

Abstract:To recognize speech in a noisy auditory scene, listeners need to perceptually segregate the target talker's voice from other competing sounds (stream segregation). A number of studies have suggested that the attentional demands placed on listeners increase as the acoustic properties and informational content of the competing sounds become more similar to that of the target voice. Hence we would expect attentional demands to be considerably greater when speech is masked by speech than when it is masked by steady-state noise. To investigate the role of attentional mechanisms in the unmasking of speech sounds, event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded to a syllable masked by noise or competing speech under both active (the participant was asked to respond when the syllable was presented) or passive (no response was required) listening conditions. The results showed that the long-latency auditory response to a syllable (/bi/), presented at different signal-to-masker ratios (SMRs), was similar in both passive and active listening conditions, when the masker was a steady-state noise. In contrast, a switch from the passive listening condition to the active one, when the masker was two-talker speech, significantly enhanced the ERPs to the syllable. These results support the hypothesis that the need to engage attentional mechanisms in aid of scene analysis increases as the similarity (both acoustic and informational) between the target speech and the competing background sounds increases.

Abstract:In “cocktail-party” environments, although listeners feel it difficult to recognize attended speech due to both energetic masking and informational masking, they can use various perceptual/cognitive cues, such as content and voice primes, to facilitate their attention to target speech. In patients with schizophrenia, both speech-perception deficits and increased vulnerability to masking stimuli generally occur. This study investigated whether speech recognition in first-episode patients (FEPs) and chronic patients (CPs) of schizophrenia is more vulnerable to noise masking and/or speech masking than that in demographics-matched-healthy controls, and whether patients with schizophrenia can use primes to unmask speech. In a trial under the priming condition, before the target sentence containing three keywords was co-presented with a noise or speech masker, the prime (early part of the sentence including the first two keywords) was recited in quiet with the target-speaker's voice. The results show that in patients, target-speech recognition was more impaired under speech-masking conditions than noise-masking conditions, and the impairment in CPs (n=22) was larger than that in FEPs (n=12). Although working memory for holding prime-content information in patients, especially CPs, was more vulnerable to masking, especially speech masking, than that in healthy controls, patients were still able to use the prime to unmask the last keyword. Thus, in “cocktail-party” environments, speech recognition in people with schizophrenia is more vulnerable to masking, particularly informational masking, and the speech-recognition impairment augments as the illness progresses. However, people with schizophrenia can use the content/voice prime to reduce energetic masking and informational masking of target speech.
The Effect of Perceived Spatial Separation on Informational Masking of Chinese Speech.

Abstract:The effect of perceived spatial separation, induced by the precedence effect, on release from noise or speech masking was investigated. Listeners were asked to orally repeat Chinese nonsense sentences, which were spoken by a female talker and presented by both the left (−45°) and right (+45°) loudspeakers, when maskers, which were either speech-spectrum noise sounds or Chinese nonsense sentences spoken by two other female talkers, were presented by the same two loudspeakers. Delays between identical sounds presented over the two loudspeakers were used to control the perceived locations of the target (right only) and masker (right, center, or left). The results show that perceived 45° and 90° separations of target speech from masking speech led to equivalently marked improvement in speech recognition, even though the degree of improvement was smaller than that reported in [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 106 (1999) 3578 (using English nonsense speech)]. When the masker was noise, however, perceived separation only marginally improved speech recognition. These results indicate that release from informational masking, due to perceived target/masker spatial separation induced by the precedence effect, also occurs for tonal Chinese speech. Compared to the 45° perceived within-hemifield separation, the 90° perceived cross-hemifield separation does not produce further unmasking.
Effect Of Number Of Masking Talkers On Speech-On-Speech Masking In Chinese

Abstract:In this study, targets were nonsense sentences spoken by a Chinese female, and maskers were nonsense sentences spoken by other 1, 2, 3, or 4 Chinese females. All stimuli were presented by two spatially separated loudspeakers. Using the precedence effect, manipulation of the delay between the two loudspeakers for the masker determined whether the target and masker were perceived as coming from the same or different locations. The results show that the masking effect remarkably increased with the number of masking talkers increased progressively from I to 4, which is also confirmed by the calculation of the speech intelligibility index. However, the perceived spatial separation, which predominantly reduced informational masking, caused the largest improvement in speech identification with the two-talker masker, indicating that two-voice speech had the highest informational masking impact. Some differences between Chinese speech masking and English speech masking were discussed.
Maintaining acoustic communication at a cocktail party: heterospecific masking noise improves signal detection through frequency separation

Abstract:We examined acoustic masking in a chirping katydid species of the Mecopoda elongata complex due to interference with a sympatric Mecopoda species where males produce continuous trills at high amplitudes. Frequency spectra of both calling songs range from 1 to 80 kHz; the chirper species has more energy in a narrow frequency band at 2 kHz and above 40 kHz. Behaviourally, chirper males successfully phase-locked their chirps to playbacks of conspecific chirps under masking conditions at signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of -8 dB. After the 2 kHz band in the chirp had been equalised to the level in the masking trill, the breakdown of phase-locked synchrony occurred at a SNR of +7 dB. The remarkable receiver performance is partially mirrored in the selective response of a first-order auditory interneuron (TN1) to conspecific chirps under these masking conditions. However, the selective response is only maintained for a stimulus including the 2 kHz component, although this frequency band has no influence on the unmasked TN1 response. Remarkably, the addition of masking noise at 65 dB sound pressure level (SPL) to threshold response levels of TN1 for pure tones of 2 kHz enhanced the sensitivity of the response by 10 dB. Thus, the spectral dissimilarity between masker and signal at a rather low frequency appears to be of crucial importance for the ability of the chirping species to communicate under strong masking by the trilling species. We discuss the possible properties underlying the cellular/synaptic mechanisms of the 'novelty detector'.
Emotionally Conditioning the Target-Speech Voice Enhances Recognition of the Target Speech under “Cocktail-Party” Listening Conditions

Abstract:Under a noisy “cocktail-party” listening condition with multiple people talking, listeners can use various perceptual/cognitive unmasking cues to improve recognition of the target speech against informational speech-on-speech masking. One potential unmasking cue is the emotion expressed in a speech voice, by means of certain acoustical features. However, it was unclear whether emotionally conditioning a target-speech voice that has none of the typical acoustical features of emotions (i.e., an emotionally neutral voice) can be used by listeners for enhancing target-speech recognition under speech-on-speech masking conditions. In this study we examined the recognition of target speech against a two-talker speech masker both before and after the emotionally neutral target voice was paired with a loud female screaming sound that has a marked negative emotional valence. The results showed that recognition of the target speech (especially the first keyword in a target sentence) was significantly improved by emotionally conditioning the target speaker’s voice. Moreover, the emotional unmasking effect was independent of the unmasking effect of the perceived spatial separation between the target speech and the masker. Also, (skin conductance) electrodermal responses became stronger after emotional learning when the target speech and masker were perceptually co-located, suggesting an increase of listening efforts when the target speech was informationally masked. These results indicate that emotionally conditioning the target speaker’s voice does not change the acoustical parameters of the target-speech stimuli, but the emotionally conditioned vocal features can be used as cues for unmasking target speech.
