Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease in diabetic patients due to damage to the small blood vessels in the retina due to high and low blood sugar levels. Accurate detection and classification of Diabetic Retinopathy is an important task in computer-aided diagnosis, especially when planning for diabetic retinopathy surgery. Therefore, this study aims to design an automated model based on deep learning, which helps ophthalmologists detect and classify diabetic retinopathy severity through fundus images. In this work, a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) with transfer learning and fine tunes has been proposed by using pre-trained networks known as Residual Network-50 (ResNet-50). The overall framework of the proposed classification model is divided into three major phases, including pre-processing, training the Resnet-50 network, and classification with evaluation. In the first phase, pre-processing techniques are applied to the APTOS2019 fundus images dataset to find the best features and highlight some fine details of these images. The resnet-50 network was trained in the second phase using the training set and saved the best model obtained that gives high accuracy during the training process. Finally, this saved model has been implemented on the testing dataset for classification DR grades. The proposed model shows good and best classification performance, which was obtained with an accuracy of 98.3%, a precision of 98.4%, an F1-Score of 98.5 % and the recall of 98.4%.

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a long-term complication of diabetes, is notoriously hard to detect in its early stages due to the fact that it only shows a subset of symptoms. Standard diagnostic procedures for DR now include OCT and digital fundus imaging. If digital fundus images alone could provide a reliable diagnosis, then eliminating the costly optical coherence tomography would be beneficial for all parties involved. Optometrists and their patients will find this useful. Using deep convolutional neural networks, we provide a novel approach to this problem. Our approach deviates from standard DCNN methods by exchanging typical max-pooling layers with fractional max-pooling ones. In order to collect more subtle information for categorisation, two such DCNNs, each with a different number of layers, are trained. To establish these limits, we use deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and features extracted from picture metadata to train a support vector machine classifier. In our experiments, we used information from Kaggle's open DR detection database. We fed our model 34,124 training images, 1,000 validation examples, and 53,572 test images to train and test it. Each of the five classes in the proposed DR classifier corresponds to one of the steps in the DR process and is given a numeric value between 0 and 4. Experimental results show a higher identification rate (86.17%) than those found in the existing literature, indicating the suggested strategy may be effective. We have jointly developed an algorithm for machine learning and accompanying software, and we've named it Deep Retina. Images of the fundus acquired by the typical person using a portable ophthalmoscope may be instantly analyzed using our technology. This technology might be used for self-diagnosis, at-home care, and telemedicine.
Computer-aided diagnosis system for retinal disorder classification using optical coherence tomography images

Abstract:The incidence of vision impairment is rapidly increasing. Diagnosis and classifying retinal abnormalities in ophthalmological applications is a significant challenge. Using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), the study aims to develop a computer aided diagnosis system for detecting and classifying retinal disorders. Choroidal neovascularization, diabetic macular edema, drusen, and normal cases are the investigated groups. Both deep learning and machine learning are combined to build the system. The SqueezeNet neural network was modified to extract features. The Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN), Decision Tree (DT), and Ensemble Model (EM) algorithms were used for disorder classification. The Bayesian optimization technique was also used to determine the best hyperparameters for each model. The model' performance was evaluated through nine criteria using 12,000 OCT images. The results have demonstrated accuracies of 97.39, 97.47, 96.98, and 95.25% for the SVM, K-NN, DT, and EM, respectively. When results are compared to relevant studies in terms of accuracy and tested samples, they show superior performance. As a result, a novel computer-aided diagnosis system for detecting and classifying retinal diseases has been developed, reducing human error while also saving time.
ResNet Based Deep Features and Random Forest Classifier for Diabetic Retinopathy Detection

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy, an eye disease commonly afflicting diabetic patients, can result in loss of vision if prompt detection and treatment are not done in the early stages. Once the symptoms are identified, the severity level of the disease needs to be classified for prescribing the right medicine. This study proposes a deep learning-based approach, for the classification and grading of diabetic retinopathy images. The proposed approach uses the feature map of ResNet-50 and passes it to Random Forest for classification. The proposed approach is compared with five state-of-the-art approaches using two category Messidor-2 and five category EyePACS datasets. These two categories on the Messidor-2 dataset include ’No Referable Diabetic Macular Edema Grade (DME)’ and ’Referable DME’ while five categories consist of ‘Proliferative diabetic retinopathy’, ‘Severe’, ‘Moderate’, ‘Mild’, and ‘No diabetic retinopathy’. The results show that the proposed approach outperforms compared approaches and achieves an accuracy of 96% and 75.09% for these datasets, respectively. The proposed approach outperforms six existing state-of-the-art architectures, namely ResNet-50, VGG-19, Inception-v3, MobileNet, Xception, and VGG16.

Abstract:Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a consequence of diabetes mellitus that results in damage to the retina's blood vessel networks. It is now the major cause of irreversible blindness among diabetics. It is more prevalent in those with a history of diabetes mellitus. A high blood glucose level results in the loss of blood and other fluids from the retina's blood vessels. The importance of early detection and treatment of this illness cannot be overstated. In medical image processing, reliably detecting diabetic retinopathy from digital fundus pictures is considered an open challenge that requires the exploration of innovative approaches. An automated computerized system accomplishes this goal via a series of processes, including the identification and classification of lesions in fundus images. We are motivated by the researchers who chose to use deep learning for the detection of many diseases, like glaucoma, due to its recent breakthroughs and significant success over typical machine learning techniques in a variety of applications. The goal of this article is to develop reformed networks for detecting and categorizing diabetic retinopathy into five classes. Through this work, three novel Convolutional Neural Networks(CNNs) based on deep learning have been proposed for the prediction of diabetic retinopathy. The first proposed network is built from scratch, the second network is the ensemble of five best-performing networks, and the last one is the Convolutional Neural Network-Long Short Term Memory (CNN-LSTM) model. The performance of three proposed networks is compared with twenty-one well-accepted image nets. The effectiveness of the proposed reformed networks is validated using multiple performance indicators on seven experiments of three Kaggle datasets (separately and in combination of these). The presented work achieves the maximum accuracy of 0.9545 (highest average-wise 0.9368), a maximum F1 score of 0.9685 (highest average-wise 0.9374), the maximum sensitivity of 0.9566 (highest average-wise 0.9420),and a maximum AUC score of 0.9769 (highest average-wise 0.9395). The results of the experiments showed that the provided model outperforms the many current models in terms of classification. So, the results of the calculations show that with the proposed networks, retinal problems in diabetic patients can be effectively found so that they can get a better diagnosis and avoid losing their sight.

Abstract:Diabetic Retinopathy is a diabetes complication due to uncontrolled levels of glucose in the body which leads to abnormality in the eyes which owing to distortion in the retina and leading to permanent damage of the eye or vision losses. Hence identification and classification of diabetic retinopathy through manual observation is a challenging process due to composite boundaries and features with a high degree of intraclass variation and a low degree of interclass variation. Unsupervised machine learning algorithms have been used to classify diseases automatically based on the appearance of lesions and their characteristics. These models require more processing time and less reliability. It has been proposed that deep learning architecture can overcome these limitations as it is more efficient and accurate at detecting the lesion’s features. The novel dense convolution neural network has been proposed with preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction and classification steps. Laplacian filter and CLAHE techniques have been used in a preprocessing step. The region growing algorithm, Principal Component Analysis and Dense CNN have been used for segmentation, Feature extraction and classification of DR lesions. Furthermore, the proposed model was compared with conventional classifiers in terms of Accuracy parameters. The proposed model achieves 97.88 % of Accuracy. It improves computing efficiency and minimizes network complexity. Hence the proposed model can accurately detect the lesions in the retinal fundus images.

Abstract:Diagnosing different retinal diseases from Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) images is a challenging task. Different automated approaches such as image processing, machine learning and deep learning algorithms have been used for early detection and diagnosis of retinal diseases. Unfortunately, these are prone to error and computational inefficiency, which requires further intervention from human experts. In this paper, we propose a novel convolution neural network architecture to successfully distinguish between different degeneration of retinal layers and their underlying causes. The proposed novel architecture outperforms other classification models while addressing the issue of gradient explosion. Our approach reaches near perfect accuracy of 99.8% and 100% for two separately available Retinal SD-OCT data-set respectively. Additionally, our architecture predicts retinal diseases in real time while outperforming human diagnosticians.

Abstract:Retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging is a valuable tool for assessing the condition of the back part of the eye. The condition has a great effect on the specificity of diagnosis, the monitoring of many physiological and pathological procedures, and the response and evaluation of therapeutic effectiveness in various fields of clinical practices, including primary eye diseases and systemic diseases such as diabetes. Therefore, precise diagnosis, classification, and automated image analysis models are crucial. In this paper, we propose an enhanced optical coherence tomography (EOCT) model to classify retinal OCT based on modified ResNet (50) and random forest algorithms, which are used in the proposed study's training strategy to enhance performance. The Adam optimizer is applied during the training process to increase the efficiency of the ResNet (50) model compared with the common pre-trained models, such as spatial separable convolutions and visual geometry group (VGG) (16). The experimentation results show that the sensitivity, specificity, precision, negative predictive value, false discovery rate, false negative rate accuracy, and Matthew's correlation coefficient are 0.9836, 0.9615, 0.9740, 0.9756, 0.0385, 0.0260, 0.0164, 0.9747, 0.9788, and 0.9474, respectively.

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy, a microvascular condition associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, poses a substantial global healthcare challenge. The demand for timely diagnosis has prompted the development of automated solutions due to the scarcity of specialists. In this paper, we introduce a ground-breaking approach to diabetic retinopathy detection – the Diabetic Retinopathy Residual Network (DR-ResNet +). The proposed model leverages the power of deep learning to automatically extract features, achieving optimal results in just seven training epochs. The DR-ResNet + architecture is meticulously designed by incorporating a series of convolutional, pooling, and fully connected layers. Hyperparameter optimization is done using both grid and random search techniques to ensure peak performance. To validate the proposed model's robustness, simulated results are compared with well-established deep learning models, such as GoogleNet, VGG16, and AlexNet, using a comprehensive Kaggle dataset comprising over 35,000 retinal images. Moreover, the proposed model is also tested on external datasets like MESSIDOR and IDRiD for its validation. Simulation results reveal that the proposed DR-ResNet + model not only reduces training time by an impressive 95% but also exhibits outstanding performance metrics, including an accuracy of 0.9898, specificity of 0.9916, precision of 0.9670, sensitivity of 0.9829, and an F1-score of 0.9748. These findings position the proposed model as exceptionally well-suited for real-time clinical applications, offering a potential game-changer in diabetic retinopathy diagnosis. This paper presents DR-ResNet + as a pioneering advancement in diabetic retinopathy diagnosis. With its rapid training, superior accuracy, and significant real-world implications, the model holds promise for transforming the landscape of healthcare by providing timely and precise diagnoses for this critical condition.

Abstract:Diabetic Retinopathy DR is a popular disease for many people as a result of age or the diabetic, as a result, it can cause blindness. therefore, diagnosis of this disease especially in the early time can prevent its effect for a lot of patients. To achieve this diagnosis, eye retina must be examined continuously. Therefore, computer-aided tools can be used in the field based on computer vision techniques. Different works have been performed using various machine learning techniques. Convolutional Neural Network is one of the promise methods, so it was for Diabetic Retinopathy detection in this paper. Also, the proposed work contains visual enhancement in the pre-processing phase, then the CNN model is trained to be able for recognition and classification phase, to diagnosis the healthy and unhealthy retina image. Three public dataset DiaretDB0, DiaretDB1 and DrimDB were used in practical testing. The implementation of this work based on Matlab- R2019a, deep learning toolbox and deep network designer to design the architecture of the convolutional neural network and train it. The results were evaluated to different metrics; accuracy is one of them. The best accuracy that was achieved: for DiaretDB0 is 100%, DiaretDB1 is 99.495% and DrimDB is 97.55%.

A Deep Learning-Based Framework for Retinal Disease Classification

Abstract:This study addresses the problem of the automatic detection of disease states of the retina. In order to solve the abovementioned problem, this study develops an artificially intelligent model. The model is based on a customized 19-layer deep convolutional neural network called VGG-19 architecture. The model (VGG-19 architecture) is empowered by transfer learning. The model is designed so that it can learn from a large set of images taken with optical coherence tomography (OCT) and classify them into four conditions of the retina: (1) choroidal neovascularization, (2) drusen, (3) diabetic macular edema, and (4) normal form. The training datasets (taken from publicly available sources) consist of 84,568 instances of OCT retinal images. The datasets exhibit all four classes of retinal disease mentioned above. The proposed model achieved a 99.17% classification accuracy with 0.995 specificities and 0.99 sensitivity, making it better than the existing models. In addition, the proper statistical evaluation is done on the predictions using such performance measures as (1) area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, (2) Cohen's kappa parameter, and (3) confusion matrix. Experimental results show that the proposed VGG-19 architecture coupled with transfer learning is an effective technique for automatically detecting the disease state of a retina.

Abstract:Abstract: The diabetes disease known as diabetic retinopathy damages the retinal blood vessels, which has an impact on the eyes. It may initially show no symptoms or cause cyclical vision problems. Both eyes are affected as the illness becomes worse, which can lead to partial or complete vision loss. When the blood sugar level is out of control, it often occurs. A person with diabetes mellitus is therefore always at risk of developing the disease. If early discovery is done, the potential of total and permanent blindness can be averted. Therefore, a reliable screening technique is needed. The current study examines a deep learning technique that can be utilized to identify diabetic retinopathy early, particularly a Densely Connected Convolutional Network (DenseNet-201). There are four categories it uses to categorize fundus images: No DR, Mild, Moderate, Severe, and Proliferative DR. Both of the datasets utilized in this study—Aptos 2019 Blindness Detection and Diabetic Retinopathy Detection 2015—were acquired from Kaggle. The proposed method entails several processes, including data collecting, preprocessing, augmenting, and modeling. Our recommended model was able to achieve an accuracy rate of 90%. Regression modeling was also applied, and the accuracy rate was 78%. The main objective of this research is to offer a trustworthy way for identifying different DR.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence is widely applied to automate Diabetic retinopathy diagnosis. Diabetes-related retinal vascular disease is one of the world's most common leading causes of blindness and vision impairment. Therefore, automated DR detection systems would greatly benefit the early screening and treatment of DR and prevent vision loss caused by it. Researchers have proposed several systems to detect abnormalities in retinal images in the past few years. However, Diabetic Retinopathy automatic detection methods have traditionally been based on hand-crafted feature extraction from the retinal images and using a classifier to obtain the final classification. DNN (Deep neural networks) have made several changes in the previous few years to assist overcome the problem mentioned above. We suggested a two-stage novel approach for automated DR classification in this research. Due to the low fraction of positive instances in the asymmetric Optic Disk (OD) and blood vessels (BV) detection system, preprocessing and data augmentation techniques are used to enhance the image quality and quantity. The first step uses two independent U-Net models for OD (optic disc) and BV (blood vessel) segmentation. In the second stage, the symmetric hybrid CNN-SVD model was created after preprocessing to extract and choose the most discriminant features following OD and BV extraction using Inception-V3 based on transfer learning, and detects DR by recognizing retinal biomarkers such as MA (microaneurysms), HM (hemorrhages), and exudates (EX). On EyePACS-1, Messidor-2, and DIARETDB0, the proposed methodology demonstrated state-of-the-art performance, with an average accuracy of 97.92%, 94.59%, and 93.52%, respectively. Extensive testing and comparisons with baseline approaches indicate the efficacy of the suggested methodology.
Deep Learning Innovations in Diagnosing Diabetic Retinopathy: The Potential of Transfer Learning and the DiaCNN Model

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a significant cause of vision impairment, emphasizing the critical need for early detection and timely intervention to avert visual deterioration. Diagnosing DR is inherently complex, as it necessitates the meticulous examination of intricate retinal images by experienced specialists. This makes the early diagnosis of DR essential for effective treatment and the prevention of eventual blindness. Traditional diagnostic methods, relying on human interpretation of these medical images, face challenges in terms of accuracy and efficiency. In the present research, we introduce a novel method that offers superior precision in DR diagnosis, compared to these traditional methods, by employing advanced deep learning techniques. Central to this approach is the concept of transfer learning. This entails using pre-existing, well-established models, specifically InceptionResNetv2 and Inceptionv3, to extract features and fine-tune select layers to cater to the unique requirements of this specific diagnostic task. Concurrently, we also present a newly devised model, DiaCNN, which is tailored for the classification of eye diseases. To validate the efficacy of the proposed methodology, we leveraged the Ocular Disease Intelligent Recognition (ODIR) dataset, which comprises eight different eye disease categories. The results were promising. The InceptionResNetv2 model, incorporating transfer learning, registered an impressive 97.5% accuracy in both the training and testing phases. Its counterpart, the Inceptionv3 model, achieved an even more commendable 99.7% accuracy during training, and 97.5% during testing. Remarkably, the DiaCNN model showcased unparalleled precision, achieving 100% accuracy in training and 98.3\% in testing.

Abstract:Diabetic Retinopathy is a global health problem, influences 100 million individuals worldwide, and in the next few decades, these incidences are expected to reach epidemic proportions. Diabetic Retinopathy is a subtle eye disease that can cause sudden, irreversible vision loss. The early-stage Diabetic Retinopathy diagnosis can be challenging for human experts, considering the visual complexity of fundus photography retinal images. However, Early Stage detection of Diabetic Retinopathy can significantly alter the severe vision loss problem. The competence of computer-aided detection systems to accurately detect the Diabetic Retinopathy had popularized them among researchers. In this study, we have utilized a pre-trained DenseNet121 network with several modifications and trained on APTOS 2019 dataset. The proposed method outperformed other state-of-the-art networks in early-stage detection and achieved 96.51% accuracy in severity grading of Diabetic Retinopathy for multi-label classification and achieved 94.44% accuracy for single-class classification method. Moreover, the precision, recall, f1-score, and quadratic weighted kappa for our network was reported as 86%, 87%, 86%, and 91.96%, respectively. Our proposed architecture is simultaneously very simple, accurate, and efficient concerning computational time and space.
Recognition of diabetic retinopathy and macular edema using deep learning

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME) are both serious eye conditions associated with diabetes and if left untreated, and they can lead to permanent blindness. Traditional methods for screening these conditions rely on manual image analysis by experts, which can be time-consuming and costly due to the scarcity of such experts. To overcome the aforementioned challenges, we present the Modified CornerNet approach with DenseNet-100. This system aims to localize and classify lesions associated with DR and DME. To train our model, we first generate annotations for input samples. These annotations likely include information about the location and type of lesions within the retinal images. DenseNet-100 is a deep CNN used for feature extraction, and CornerNet is a one-stage object detection model. CornerNet is known for its ability to accurately localize small objects, which makes it suitable for detecting lesions in retinal images. We assessed our technique on two challenging datasets, EyePACS and IDRiD. These datasets contain a diverse range of retinal images, which is important to estimate the performance of our model. Further, the proposed model is also tested in the cross-corpus scenario on two challenging datasets named APTOS-2019 and Diaretdb1 to assess the generalizability of our system. According to the accomplished analysis, our method outperformed the latest approaches in terms of both qualitative and quantitative results. The ability to effectively localize small abnormalities and handle over-fitted challenges is highlighted as a key strength of the suggested framework which can assist the practitioners in the timely recognition of such eye ailments.
DeepDiabetic: An Identification System of Diabetic Eye Diseases Using Deep Neural Networks

Abstract:Deep Learning (DL) plays a successful and influential role in medical imaging diagnosis, image detection, and image classification. Diabetes is a significant public health concern, and diabetic eye disease will be the leading cause of vision loss across the globe. This research proposed a multi-classification deep learning model for diagnosing and identifying four different diabetic eye diseases: Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), Diabetic Macular Edema (DME), glaucoma, and cataract which we called the DeepDiabetic framework. The proposed models were assessed using 1228 images from six different available datasets (DIARETDB0, DIARETDB1, Messidor, HEI-MED, Ocular, and Retina). In addition to the original dataset, we measured the performance of the deep learning models according to two different geometric augmentation methods called online augmented and offline augmented. The present work considers five architectures’ performances: EfficientNetB0, VGG16, ResNet152V2, ResNet152V2 + Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), and ResNet152V2 + Bidirectional GRU (Bi-GRU). A comprehensive analysis and evaluation of these deep learning architectures is provided using public fundus datasets with four classes (i.e., DR, DME, Glaucoma, and Cataract). To the best of our knowledge, no other deep learning models for choosing between these models for these specific diseases are found in the literature. The results of the experiments showed that the EfficientNetB0 model outperforms the other four proposed models. The EfficientNetB0 model achieved 0.9876 in accuracy, 0.9876 recall, 0.9876 precision, and 0.9977 AUC based on fundus images. Our EfficientNetB0 model achieves 98.76% accuracy, while the previous studies only achieved 88.33%, 89.54%, 97.23%, and 80.33% accuracy, respectively. When compared to the previous studies as Fast-RCNN, RCNN-LSTM, and InceptionResNet, our EfficientNetB0 model achieves much higher accuracy, recall, precision, and AUC. According to the outcomes, our proposed models, especially the EfficientNetB0 model, are significantly more accurate than the state-of-the-art models.

Ensemble Deep Learning for Diabetic Retinopathy Detection Using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the role of ensemble learning techniques with deep learning in classifying diabetic retinopathy (DR) in optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) images and their corresponding co-registered structural images.Methods: A total of 463 volumes from 380 eyes were acquired using the 3 × 3-mm OCTA protocol on the Zeiss Plex Elite system. Enface images of the superficial and deep capillary plexus were exported from both the optical coherence tomography and OCTA data. Component neural networks were constructed using single data-types and fine-tuned using VGG19, ResNet50, and DenseNet architectures pretrained on ImageNet weights. These networks were then ensembled using majority soft voting and stacking techniques. Results were compared with a classifier using manually engineered features. Class activation maps (CAMs) were created using the original CAM algorithm and Grad-CAM.Results: The networks trained with the VGG19 architecture outperformed the networks trained on deeper architectures. Ensemble networks constructed using the four fine-tuned VGG19 architectures achieved accuracies of 0.92 and 0.90 for the majority soft voting and stacking methods respectively. Both ensemble methods outperformed the highest single data-type network and the network trained on hand-crafted features. Grad-CAM was shown to more accurately highlight areas of disease.Conclusions: Ensemble learning increases the predictive accuracy of CNNs for classifying referable DR on OCTA datasets.Translational Relevance: Because the diagnostic accuracy of OCTA images is shown to be greater than the manually extracted features currently used in the literature, the proposed methods may be beneficial toward developing clinically valuable solutions for DR diagnoses.

Abstract:The amino acid sequence of rabbit skeletal muscle heat-stable inhibitor of the cAMP-dependent protein kinase has been determined by microsequencing techniques. Proof of the structure involved a series of nonoverlapping tryptic fragments for primary identification of 86% of the amino acids. Complementary fragments generated by cleavage with chymotrypsin, Staphylococcus aureus V8 proteinase, and mast cell proteinase II contributed to proof of the structure. The inhibitor is a single polypeptide chain of 75 residues and has a molecular weight of 7829. It lacks tryptophan, proline, and sulfur-containing amino acids. The amino terminus of the inhibitor is blocked by an unidentified group. The amino-terminal region of the molecule contains the kinase inhibitory domain, and synthetic peptides based on the sequence of residues 11-30 are potent competitive inhibitors of the cAMP-dependent protein kinase [Scott, J. D., Fischer, E. H., Demaille, J. G. & Krebs, E. G. (1985) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 82, 4379-4383]. Residues 14-22 show considerable homology to the "hinge-regions" of the regulatory subunits of the cAMP-dependent protein kinase. The remainder of the molecule shows no similarity to the known amino acid sequence of any protein.

Abstract:Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is caused as a result of Diabetes Mellitus which causes development of various retinal abrasions in the human retina. These lesions cause hindrance in vision and in severe cases, DR can lead to blindness. DR is observed amongst 80% of patients who have been diagnosed from prolonged diabetes for a period of 10–15 years. The manual process of periodic DR diagnosis and detection for necessary treatment, is time consuming and unreliable due to unavailability of resources and expert opinion. Therefore, computerized diagnostic systems which use Deep Learning (DL) Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures, are proposed to learn DR patterns from fundus images and identify the severity of the disease. This paper proposes a comprehensive model using 26 state-of-the-art DL networks to assess and evaluate their performance, and which contribute for deep feature extraction and image classification of DR fundus images. In the proposed model, ResNet50 has shown highest overfitting in comparison to Inception V3, which has shown lowest overfitting when trained using the Kaggle’s EyePACS fundus image dataset. EfficientNetB4 is the most optimal, efficient and reliable DL algorithm in detection of DR, followed by InceptionResNetV2, NasNetLarge and DenseNet169. EfficientNetB4 has achieved a training accuracy of 99.37% and the highest validation accuracy of 79.11%. DenseNet201 has achieved the highest training accuracy of 99.58% and a validation accuracy of 76.80% which is less than the top-4 best performing models.
