Abstract:Objective: It is critical to examine the powerful socializing effects of networked media on early adolescents when social media use, body self-consciousness, and social comparisons are at their peak. Method: Using 2 subsamples (N = 374 and N = 396) of those aged 11 to 14 years from a larger survey sample of 700 middle school participants in the Northeast United States, we conducted a cross-sectional pilot survey using brief, descriptive body dissatisfaction measures directly related to social media use. Results: Within our body dissatisfaction subsample, 19% reported dissatisfaction to body image issues. Participants' most common concerns around body image included not being thin enough, not attractive enough, and feeling dissatisfaction with body shape, hair, and face. The results from analysis of covariance analyses showed that those reporting social media-related body dissatisfaction checked their social media more frequently. When compared with those who did not feel negatively about their body image because of social media, those who did had higher rates of depressive symptoms, had online social anxiety, had found it harder to make new friends, and were more socially isolated. Those who followed celebrities checked social media more frequently and were more likely to have depressive symptoms and online social anxiety. Conclusion: There may be negative socioemotional health consequences of early adolescent social media users with exposure to particular sources of social media content, such as photographs of celebrities.

Abstract:Social media apps, owing to their technological advancements and applications of photo editing tools, have digitalized the female body and in doing so have led to the creation of unrealistic beauty ideals. Social media along with cultural factors created a socio-digital construct in which an attractive and successful woman embodies European features. Repeated exposure to this kind of imagery has made women feel uncomfortable in their bodies. Objectification of young women to such an extent has created an environment where an increasing number of women are suffering from body image issues, such as body dysmorphic disorder. A mental health condition, whereby people utilize most of their time worrying about perceived flaws in their appearance. The excess of this disorder can lead to poor self-esteem, self-harm, depression, and even suicide. It is most common in teens and young adults. This study investigates the patterns of toxic social media trends, how they are being integrated into society and why young women are falling prey to them. The research methodology comprised of a mixed-method approach. It was conducted in two stages: the first half consisted of a Google survey which was shared online with Facebook Female-centric groups besides Instagram and WhatsApp.In the second stage, in-depth interviews of eight women, belonging to different backgrounds offitness trainer, psychologist, feminist writer, model, nutritionist, and three students from the age groups of 18, 21, and 24 were sampled. The reason for opting mixed method was to strengthen the study and enhance its authenticity through in-depth interview analysis.
“It’s Better Saying I Look Fat Instead of Saying You Look Fat”: A Qualitative Study of U.K. Adolescents’ Understanding of Appearance-Related Interactions on Social Media

Abstract:Appearance-related interactions with peers, both positive and negative, are commonplace on social media. Using qualitative methods, this study explores U.K. adolescents’ shared understandings and experiences of these interactions. Sixty-four adolescents ( Age M = 12.56; SD = 0.97; Girls = 33) from a secondary school in Northern England participated in semi-structured focus groups. Using thematic analysis, three themes were developed that encapsulate their shared understandings of appearance-related interactions: (a) positive appearance commentary is the norm, especially if you are popular and attractive; (b) comments to others should be positive, but comments about the self should be modest and self-deprecating; and (c) negative appearance comments are problematic but not always intentionally harmful. Overall, our findings suggest that, to adolescents, the boundaries between positive and negative interactions are blurred, as content, intention, gender, and social rules intersect with social media platform design. Further research is needed to better understand how social media site design alters adolescents’ appearance interactions, as well as the role of these interactions in the development and maintenance of peer relationships and body image concerns.

Abstract:Previous research on social media's impact on body esteem has dominantly centered on usage frequency, overlooking the varied effects of different types of social media content on body esteem. Drawing on the tripartite influence model and social comparison theory, this study investigated how varied exposure to appearance-related content on social media predicts body esteem through social comparison. A total of 554 Chinese young females aged between 18 and 29 ( M = 21.6, SD = 2.1) participated in an online survey. Results showed that exposure to idealized content was positively associated with upward appearance comparison, leading to decreased body esteem concerning weight and appearance. Exposure to idealized content was also positively linked to downward appearance comparison, reducing body esteem concerning appearance. Exposure to non-idealized content was negatively associated with upward appearance comparison, dampening comparison's negative influence on body esteem. A multi-group analysis revealed that the effects of exposure to idealized social media content on upward comparison were significantly intensified among females with a high level of trait self-objectification. Implications for shaping a body-positive image on social media among young females were discussed.

Abstract:People have been influenced by social media, through both subtle and explicit means that appearance is crucial to a positive and successful experience as a person. While the message may not be directly stated, the strong implication that society needs to fit the ideal body standard can have detrimental consequences, especially amongst impressionable teen audiences. The social media platform, Instagram, is greatly responsible for this trend due to its focus on photo-sharing. My research investigated Instagram's portrayal of an unrealistic body image and social media's influence over the perception of one's body image. It aimed to answer the question “What effect does social media's portrayal of the unrealistic ideal body have on male and female Californian high school students’ own body satisfaction?”. To do this, I conducted a survey of reviewing students' body satisfaction before and after reviewing images of popular influencers through Google Forms. I had participants identify social media's portrayal and reflect on their interactions with social media. After analyzing the data, I concluded that while both genders' body satisfaction was impacted negatively by social media, young women were impacted more significantly than young men. The results of this study give insight into how society influences body image and how social media can be used as a method to promote the ideal body standard. It explores males and their experiences with social media more deeply and in comparison to women.

Abstract:This essay discusses the negative impact of social media on body image and the promotion of healthier attitudes towards food and body diversity. It explores the sociocultural and psychological factors that contribute to susceptibility to social media influence, such as self-esteem, body image dissatisfaction, the need for social approval, perfectionism, and social comparison orientation. Peer pressure and social comparison are identified as significant influences on social media platforms. Potential solutions and interventions are proposed, including media literacy education, promoting body positivity and diversity, encouraging responsible social media use, developing evidence-based resources, fostering a supportive online community, collaborating with influencers and content creators, and encouraging individuals to seek professional help. By addressing these issues, we can work towards mitigating the negative impact of social media on body image and promoting healthier attitudes towards food and body diversity.

Abstract:Adolescents are considered vulnerable to negative influences on social media because their use of the medium expands at a time when they are in a transition period in their lives dealing with many other issues such as puberty, exam stress and anxiety about their future. This review focuses on primary research articles exploring the impact of social media on adolescents’ mental health, body image and eating disorder related issues. This review also includes articles regarding how social media can be used to deliver positive messages, recruit vulnerable subjects for early intervention and explore the effectiveness of new treatment strategies. Based on the reviewed articles, it seems that girls, boys and transgender persons are similarly at-risk from negative social media influence. Going ahead, there is a need to focus on the nature of social media activity rather than just time spent to identify vulnerable young persons. It is possible that in some cases social media usage can drive a vicious cycle that amplifies negative psychological attitudes initiated due to social and personal context. Further research is required to explore the role parents and social media platforms can play in maintaining positive attitudes and effecting early intervention programs.

Abstract:Through different sections, this paper discovers the complex relationship between social exposure and body image perceptions among young individuals. In the era of technological development, the significance of media exposure to young people cannot be underestimated. The Causes and Consequences section is divided into the previous studies and theories and the consequences of frequent media exposure. These two parts separately discussed the possible reasons for media influencing young people and the results, for instance, anxiety, lack of confidence, or dissatisfaction with their body image. It examines how these portrayals reinforce traditional gender roles, cultivate body dissatisfaction, affect interpersonal relationships, and shape societal norms and expectations. The third part introduces some mitigating factors and interventions. Including education initiatives and media literacy programs to support young people’s critical thinking and viewing skills when facing media exposure, it also includes policy interventions through government agencies and health services to improve young people’s mental health. This research fosters a healthier relationship between young people and media exposure.

Abstract:During early and middle adolescence, individuals are at heightened risk of poor body image and subsequent negative mental health outcomes, and the highly visual nature of social media may play a role in this process. It remains unclear, however, if appearance preoccupation on social media—such as appearance-related social media consciousness (ASMC)—influences offline body image, or if preexisting body image concerns influence online appearance preoccupation. The present study investigated between-person differences and potential bidirectional within-person associations in these experiences among eighth grade adolescents in the United States ( n = 1,582; ages 11–15 years old; M age = 13; 47.5% girls, 45.9% boys, 6.5% another gender identity; 37% Latine, 32% White, 18% Black, 7% Asian, 6% another racial/ethnic identity). Participants completed a longitudinal study over three waves within one academic year. Results indicated that within-person increases in ASMC preceded within-person increases in appearance-contingent self-worth and were bidirectionally associated with worse appearance esteem, with no differences in these associations by gender. Among girls only, self-objectification was associated with subsequent within-person increases in ASMC, but not vice versa. Abstract:Adolescents increasingly used social media, and it was found to have a substantial impact on their self-image control. This review investigated the general impact of social media on teenage self-image, with a particular emphasis on the role of age and gender. Furthermore, the research analyzed the elements that contributed to negative self-image, which could be divided into two categories: social media and body shame, as well as a crucial cognitive aspect, notably appearance control beliefs. It also discussed the effects of the action of making social comparisons related to appearance on social media, along with the awareness of objectification of the body and the control of body image portrayed in images, which had a significant impact on how adolescents perceived themselves. It emphasized importance of the jurisdiction with people with their looking on adolescent self-image, with beliefs about appearance control influencing behavior and attitudes about body image. It has addressed cognitive issues like appearance control beliefs, which was critical in supporting positive self-image and mental health in teenagers. Finally, this review study underlined the importance of raising knowledge about the collision due to internet usage on the idea teenagers had for their looking, particularly girls. The research emphasized the necessity of addressing elements that contributed to problematic self-image, such as social media and body shame, as well as a crucial cognitive aspect, and proposed interventions that helped improve good self-image and mental health in teenagers.
Different Categories of Social Media Use and Their Association With Body Image Among Adolescents in 42 Countries

Abstract:Objectives Social media has become integrated into adolescents’ lives and influences body image perceptions. Our study examined four patterns of social media use (SMU): non-active, active, intensive, and problematic. We hypothesised that intensive SMU and problematic SMU would be associated with negative body image (negative subjective body weight) and over/underestimated body weight congruence, compared to non-active and active SMU. In addition, we expect these associations to be stronger for girls. Methods Data from 190,892 respondents aged 11, 13, and 15 from 42 countries involved in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study were analysed. Results Findings revealed higher rates of intensive or problematic SMU among adolescents who perceived themselves as too fat or too thin. Two-level regression analyses showed intensive and problematic SMU as more likely to perceive themselves as too fat or too thin than active users. The association was significant among intensive and problematic girl social media users, whereas, among boys, the relationship was only significant for problematic users. Conclusion Our findings highlight the importance of assessing SMU patterns to evaluate associations with body image.

Abstract:Docetaxel is one of the most promising chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, but it shows fearful side effects. We hypothesized that a novel targeted nanoassembly (TNA) could provide efficient intracellular drug delivery in breast tumor cells overexpressing epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor and thus improve the efficacy and reduce the side effects of docetaxel. We prepared the novel docetaxel loaded TNAs formed by polyethylene glycol-distearoylphosphatidylethanolamine (PEG-DSPE) and modified with EGF. Compared with nontargeted nanoassemblies (NNAs), TNAs showed obvious improvement of cell-specific uptake and internalization, and revealed more cytotoxicity against MDA-MB-468 cells by inducing more late apoptosis and subG1 cells at low drug concentration, or more G2/M arrest at high drug concentration than NNAs or Taxotere. In BALB/c mice bearing breast tumor xenografts, TNAs showed stronger inhibition of tumor growth compared with NNAs (relative tumor volume in mice treated with 5 mg/kg TNAs = 0.99 and 10 mg/kg NNAs = 1.71, p < 0.05) or Taxotere (relative tumor volume in mice treated with 5 mg/kg TNAs = 0.99 and 10 mg/kg Taxotere = 4.20, p < 0.01). In particular, tumor disappeared completely in the TNA group at a dose of 10 mg/kg. The maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of TNAs was about four times higher than that of Taxotere. TNAs also demonstrated a much longer circulation time in vivo and more drug accumulation in tumor in a murine breast cancer model than Taxotere. TNA treatment also prolonged survival of mice. These results suggested that TNAs could have more potential as a delivery system for breast cancer chemotherapy.

Abstract:Our study examined three potential predictors of self-objectification in female adolescents, namely media exposure, extracurricular activities, and appearance-related comments (both positive and negative). Participants were 1,087 female adolescents ranging in age from 12 to 16, who completed questionnaire measures of media exposure (television, magazines, Internet, and social networking), time spent on extracurricular activities, positive and negative appearance-related comments, self-objectification, self-surveillance, body shame, and disordered eating. Tests of the hypothesized path model revealed that self-reported exposure to magazines and social networking sites each independently was associated positively with self-objectification. In addition, positive appearance-related comments were shown to be associated positively with self-objectification. On the other hand, time spent on extracurricular activities was not related to self-objectification. The results offer support for the role of media exposure and appearance-related comments in the development of self-objectification in female adolescents. In particular, the results suggest that positive appearance-related comments (compliments) may be just as, or even more, likely to give rise to self-objectification as negative appearance-related comments. The findings suggest practical strategies for the potential protection of the development of self-objectification and its deleterious consequences.

Abstract:The latency-associated nuclear antigen (LANA) encoded by orf73 of Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) binds to viral episomal DNA and nuclear heterochromatin in infected cells. A 3.2 kb transcript in KSHV-positive primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) cells (BCP-1 and BC-3) encoding a C-terminal truncated form of LANA (LANA-Delta76) has been identified. This transcript has the addition of a poly(A) tail at nt 3264 of orf73 resulting in an in-frame stop codon (TAA) effectively truncating LANA by 76 aa ( approximately 8 kDa). Examination of the coding region revealed the presence of a non-canonical polyadenylation signal (AGTAAA) 17 nt upstream of the poly(A) tail. The protein expressed from this transcript is representative of the faster migration of the LANA doublet bands observed by SDS-PAGE and Western blot. Mutation of the poly(A) signal from AGTAAA to TGTACA produced a protein that co-migrated with the larger LANA isoform. A C-terminal LANA-Delta76 EGFP fusion protein localized to the nucleus but did not co-localize with endogenous LANA in BCP-1 cells, or heterochromatin in HEK293 cells. Using an electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA), the authors were able to show that LANA-Delta76 does not bind to the KSHV terminal repeat motif known to interact with LANA. These data provide evidence for the presence of an isoform of LANA that may perform alternative functions in KSHV-infected cells.
Effects of Social Media and Smartphone Use on Body Esteem in Female Adolescents: Testing a Cognitive and Affective Model

Abstract:We examined the predictive relations of social media and smartphone use to body esteem in female adolescents and the mechanism that underlies these relations. As a result of frequent social media and smartphone use, adolescents are continually exposed to appearance-related media content. This likely reinforces a thin ideal and fosters appearance-based comparison and increases fear of external evaluation. Hence, we investigated a cognitive-affective framework in which the associations of social media and smartphone use with body esteem are serially mediated by cognitive internalization of an ideal body image, appearance comparisons, and social appearance anxiety. By testing female adolescents (N = 100) aged 13 to 18, we found that excessive social media use leads to unhealthy body esteem via intensified cognitive internalization, which aggravates appearance comparisons and anxiety regarding negative appearance evaluation. Further, we found that screen time for specific smartphone activities also harmed body esteem, independent of social media use. However, overall smartphone screen time did not affect body esteem when social media use was taken into consideration. Our findings underscore the multifactor mechanism that elucidates the negative impacts of social media and smartphone activities on body esteem in female adolescents, who are developmentally susceptible to poor body esteem.

Abstract:With the proliferation of social media platforms and new-generation aesthetics. There has been a shift in how peopleespecially femaleview and engage with notions of the body and appearance. An increasing amount of research has examined the intricate connection between women's body and appearance issues and social media use over the last ten years. The relationship between young people's appearance anxiety issues and body image has been extensively studied in the literature. However, the influence of social media on the body image and influence of young women has received comparatively less theoretical investigation. It's also critical to comprehend how social media use influences women's body image barriers and perceptions, given the prominence of the internet in the lives of young people and their dependency on it. This essay aims to investigate the ways in which social media influences young women's body image issues and to provide a greater perspective on the research on this topic. It will do this by utilising the theories of social comparison and objectification to uncover and analyse the ways in which young women perceive their bodies and appearances on social media.

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to qualitatively investigate the influence of Instagram on young women's self-perception and body satisfaction, exploring the complex dynamics between social media interactions and their impacts on body image and self-esteem. Methods and Materials: Utilizing a qualitative research design, this study conducted semi-structured interviews with 27 young women aged 18 to 29, who were regular Instagram users. The interviews focused on participants' Instagram usage patterns, their exposure to body image-related content, and the effects of these interactions on their self-perception and body satisfaction. Thematic analysis was employed to identify and analyze patterns within the data, with theoretical saturation guiding the depth and comprehensiveness of the investigation. Findings: The analysis revealed seven main themes: Impact of Instagram on Self-Perception, Influence of Visual Content, Social Comparison Dynamics, Psychological Outcomes, Navigating Online Spaces, Regulation and Policy, and Technological Influences. These themes encompassed various categories and concepts, such as self-esteem fluctuations, identity shaping, body image concerns, exposure to beauty standards, content consumption patterns, upward vs. downward comparison, emotional and cognitive responses, behavioral changes, strategies for digital literacy, and the need for platform accountability. Conclusion: The study concludes that Instagram significantly influences young women's self-perception and body satisfaction, with social comparison dynamics, exposure to idealized beauty standards, and the nature of content consumption playing pivotal roles. While Instagram offers opportunities for positive engagement and support, it also poses challenges to body image and self-esteem. Addressing these impacts requires a multifaceted approach, including enhanced digital literacy, critical engagement with social media content, and proactive measures by social media platforms to foster a healthier online environment.

Abstract:The present study experimentally investigated the effect of Facebook usage on women's mood and body image, whether these effects differ from an online fashion magazine, and whether appearance comparison tendency moderates any of these effects. Female participants (N=112) were randomly assigned to spend 10min browsing their Facebook account, a magazine website, or an appearance-neutral control website before completing state measures of mood, body dissatisfaction, and appearance discrepancies (weight-related, and face, hair, and skin-related). Participants also completed a trait measure of appearance comparison tendency. Participants who spent time on Facebook reported being in a more negative mood than those who spent time on the control website. Furthermore, women high in appearance comparison tendency reported more facial, hair, and skin-related discrepancies after Facebook exposure than exposure to the control website. Given its popularity, more research is needed to better understand the impact that Facebook has on appearance concerns.

Abstract:Exposure to idealized social media imagery has been shown to be detrimental to body image among young women, and social media literacy may be protective. This mixed methods study aimed to evaluate the effects of an online video narrated by a high-profile, plus-size model on the body image and negative mood of young women and predictors of the effects. A sample of 304 young women, average age 20.95 ( SD = 2.09) years, completed an online survey including pre- and post-exposure measures of state body image and negative mood, and trait measures of upward social media appearance comparison, thin-ideal internalization, and selfie-investment. A subset ( n = 148) responded to open-ended questions to obtain feedback on the video coded categorically and through thematic analysis. Findings revealed immediate improvements in state body satisfaction and negative mood, with higher levels of trait appearance comparison and selfie investment associated with smaller effects of the video. Participants endorsed the video as raising awareness of unrealistic images but limited in terms of mitigating appearance comparison and selfie-investment. Furthermore, participants described that Iskra's status as a professional model also influenced their reactions. These findings highlight the importance of assessing for unintended paradoxical effects of social media literacy efforts and ensuring that such interventions are empirically based.
