Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has affected educational institutions deeply and globally. In the course of the pandemic, countries around the world have tried to fill the gap that has arisen in traditional face-to-face education with emergency web-based distance education systems. This study aims to evaluate the possibilities and limitations of emergency distance education conducted during the pandemic period, based on university students' approach-avoidance attitudes towards distance education and their distance education experiences. This study, using a mixed method, was designed with explanatory sequential design. The research was conducted at a state university in Turkey. Quantitative data were collected through an online questionnaire (n = 684), and qualitative data were collected from 14 student participants through semi-structured online interviews. In the quantitative dimension, it was determined that students' avoidance attitudes towards distance education were stronger than their approach attitudes, and there were significant differences between student attitudes and various variables. In the qualitative dimension, it has been revealed that the interactions between both student-student and student-lecturer weakened with distance education during the pandemic period, but these interactions gained some new qualities. It was concluded that the interest towards the lessons conducted only through lecture notes weakened, the contents became functional at the point of clarifying the boundaries of the lessons, and increased the education load at the point of concentration. It was revealed that distance education in home conditions includes both opportunities and limitations in terms of interactions.

Abstract:Distance education, also called distance learning, e-learning, and online learning, is a practice of teaching and learning in which teachers and learners are not in a closed class or room in person, but where education takes place through various new-media technologies and all parties (student-teacher, teacher-teacher, student-student) are able to communicate, interact and exchange information and emotions. Being on the agenda of educational science for a long time now and gaining further importance during COVID-19 lockdowns, both advantages (e.g., reducing social anxiety, and a flexible schedule) and disadvantages (lack of social interactivity, and miscommunication) of distance education are highly debated in the related literature. Therefore, this study, through a qualitative method (i.e., a case study design and semi-structured interviews), aims to analyse the opinions and experiences of academics regarding distance education and its applications. The participants consist of 36 lecturers working at 16 different Turkish universities selected by the purposeful sampling method (i.e., typical case sampling). The results suggest that the participants still have doubts about online distance education, and they mention both ups (ease of connection, and cost-effectiveness) and downs (lack of self-motivation, socialization, and the sense of isolation) of it. Nonetheless, none of the academics thinks distance education will replace an in-person learning environment in the near future. Thus, this study presents a general illustration of distance education activities through the views of Turkish academics and gives recommendations for future digital/distance/online learning activities and functionalities.

Abstract:This study measured self-regulated online learning skills of English language learners in post-pandemic hybrid education. A quantitative survey design was adopted and students majoring in English Language and Literature at a state university in Türkiye in 2021-2022 academic year constituted the population of the research. The Self-Regulated Online Learning Scale was administered to the students of three active grades in the department (preparatory, first and second grades). As a result of statistical analyses, the findings demonstrated that the students’ self-regulated online learning skills were at a moderate level both in general and with respect to self-regulation dimensions. Additionally, no significant difference was observed in students’ reported self-regulated learning across groups of gender, years of education and perceived foreign language levels whereas significant differences were revealed for the variable of frequency of attendance to online classes. The results are discussed and some recommendations are provided.

Abstract:The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the order of learning that has been carried out by lecturers at universities. Learning shifted from traditional to online. Online learning is one of the main strategies that must be carried out by lecturers in order to ensure that the learning process continues. The study aims to determine students’ responses and feedbacks during online learning in English courses during Covid - 19. The research method used descriptive quantitative method. Data were taken using questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire was prepared through Google Form and a link was sent to students, and lecturers via WhatsApp. The population and sample in this study were students of the DIII TLM study program, S1 Pharmacy, S1 PGSD and S1 ARS at Universitas Megarezky who took English courses. The instrument used is a response questionnaire and student feedback during online learning. Based on data processing and analysis that online learning carried out by lecturers in English courses has been effective, efficient, varied, helping students understand the material, forming independent learning, and increasing student active participation in learning. There are several important findings regarding online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Zoom, WhatsApp and Google Classroom are the most widely used applications as learning media. There are several obstacles experienced by teachers and students during the implementation of online learning related to internet access and quotas. An assessment of student satisfaction with e-learning: An empirical study with computer and software engineering undergraduate students in Turkey under pandemic conditions

Abstract:As COVID-19 reached Turkey in March 2020, all universities switched to e-learning in a very short period. Computer and software engineering (CE/SE) undergraduate students studying at university campuses have switched to e-learning. This paper seeks to understand the e-learning experience of CE/SE undergraduate students. A questionnaire was created and applied to CE/SE undergraduate students in Turkish universities. The data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative techniques. The questionnaire received 290 usable responses. The highlights from the findings include: the participants (1) used video recordings intensively for e-learning and found them useful; (2) found face-to-face lectures more beneficial compared to digital live lectures; (3) used external online resources to improve their learning performance in courses; (4) thought that the materials and methods utilized for assessment should be adapted to e-learning for a better and fair evaluation; (5) perceived significantly less instructor support and classmate interaction and collaboration in e-learning compared to on-campus education settings; (6) rated their perceived satisfaction from e-learning as 2.85, slightly under the mid-level of the 5-point Likert scale; (7) perceived instructor support, student interaction and collaboration, and student autonomy as noteworthy factors in high-quality e-learning.

Abstract:Free online resources are user-friendly technologies which have become available through the Internet in recent years and gaining popularity during Covid-19. Since learners use smartphones, free online resources are easily accessible. Books are portable, but learners find it somewhat difficult to learn English language via books which may only be available in the classroom context, whereas free online resources are easily accessed. The purpose of this study is to identify learners’ perception learning English via free online resources and traditional learning. Quantitative and qualitative methods were employed in the present study. Twenty-five international pre-elementary intensive English students took part in this study. It was found that learners perceived the free online resources as valuable tools for learning English in relation to reading, conversation, and vocabulary and also free online resources help promote free learning norms in learning the English language. The learners also had constructive attitudes towards free online resources. Free online resources always provide a motivating learning environment, enhance learners’ analytical and critical thinking skills, and encourage social interaction between teachers and learners, learners and their peers, and learners and other participants.

Abstract:This qualitative phenomenological study was designed to gain an in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instructors and learners with emergency distance education in response to the COVID-19 pandemic using the lens of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) model. Data was collected through a survey including open-ended questions and a series of in-depth interviews with participants from a large state university. The content analysis method was used for the data analysis. Our research showed that instructors experienced challenges of emergency distance education, emotional stress due to the uncertainties and unplanned nature of the abrupt shift. The findings also identified issues that affect instructors’ and students’ motivation such as unstable internet connection, lack of student–teacher and peer interaction, as well as insufficient resources and access due to the digital divide. Implications for improving the teacher training programs and teachers’ application of the TPACK framework are discussed.

Abstract:Distance learning, online learning and hybrid learning models have been a part of language education for a long time. The adoption of these models and research focusing on related phenomena have become even more frequent since the breakout of the COVID‐19 pandemic in 2019. This mixed‐method study examines the relationship between online learning self‐efficacy and online self‐regulation of preparatory class English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners to provide a picture of the learners' perspective regarding the online segment of the hybrid education system that was in effect during the mentioned era, to provide deeper insights regarding learner perceptions during such times of emergency. Turkish adaptations of the Online‐Learning Self‐Efficacy Scale and Online Self‐regulated Learning Questionnaire were utilized as data collection instruments. To validate and expand the content of quantitative findings, semi‐structured interviews were conducted with a selected group of participants. The findings reveal that preparatory year Turkish EFL learners perceive themselves to be self‐efficacious and self‐regulated at a satisfactory level in online learning environments. The study provides insight into the learners' perceptions during this period and contributes to filling a significant gap within the field as well as offering new perspectives in case we face similar conditions in the future.

Abstract:The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic caused a recourse to online teaching in many parts of the world, and for several disciplines, including foreign language learning. Although quite an amount of research has been conducted on Online Foreign Language Learning (OFLL), issues relating to OFLL in philology programs have received relatively little attention. Furthermore, differences in students’ experiences according to the foreign language of study remain under-researched. The current paper addresses this gap using both quantitative and qualitative methods. A survey was conducted among one thousand, one hundred and five [1,105] (former) students of an African university. The researchers examined the new methods applied in the teaching of Arabic, Chinese, French, Kiswahili, Russian, and Spanish as foreign languages at the research setting during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study investigated the challenges encountered by participants, participants’ perceptions of OFLL, and its impact on their performance. The findings showed that challenges encountered by participants included issues such as inadequate physical interaction in the foreign language and problems with internet connectivity. However, the findings also suggest that OFLL has certain advantages such as the reduction of anxiety and the increase of foreign language enjoyment among learners. These findings suggest that OFLL has some benefits which foreign language institutions should make good use of even beyond times of crisis. Measures to achieve this include the usage of efficient online learning management software and the provision of digital training programs for students and teachers.

Abstract:Teaching and acquisition of English as a foreign language (EFL) has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 epidemic in all educational settings around the world. This research paper looks into the perceptions and experiences of EFL teachers in Bosnia and Herzegovina's elementary and high schools throughout the pandemic. A qualitative method - interviews with 40 teachers - was used in the study. The results show that teachers had a variety of difficulties while instructing EFL during the pandemic, including a lack of internet access, a lack of student involvement, and a lack of sufficient training in online teaching methods. However, many instructors also acknowledged the benefits, like improved adaptability and creativity in their education. The paper concludes with recommendations for improving EFL instruction both during and after the epidemic, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that all students have fair access to resources and technology as well as the necessity of giving teachers more training and support. Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic brought changes around the world, especially in the education field where classes were shifted to only distance learning. This radical transformation could have affected students’ level of engagement and motivation; therefore, it might also have had some influence on their performance. This study correlates English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ perceptions of their level of engagement and motivation in virtual environments with factors such as schedule, gender, and the discipline area they are studying. A two-part-survey was used. The first part includes demographic information and the second one 22 close-ended questions. It was completed by 703 EFL students in the Language Department of the University of Cuenca, Ecuador. The results revealed an important level of engagement in these students. Students’ goals and reasons for learning the language need to be considered as an opportunity to provide their teachers with some information to enhance students’ language competence, generate strategies for language learning, and promote significant learning experiences. Research is recommended to discover teachers’ views and opinions on different aspects involved in online classes and use this information to design and implement more active, engaging, and effective lessons. These specific findings can be used to improve and implement effective methodologies that can lead to better practices, not only for EFL teachers, but also for EFL students.

Abstract:The aim of the current research is to investigate the language assessment literacy perceptions of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers working at state primary, middle, and high schools in Turkey. Another purpose of the study was to investigate how EFL teachers adapted their language assessment skills to the online teaching context during the Covid- 19 pandemic, and to what extent. Additionally, challenges and solutions of teachers in transforming their language assessment skills into online education were investigated. A mixed-methods study was employed as the research design. The study obtained and triangulated both qualitative and quantitative data to enhance its validity. In the quantitative phase, Vogt and Tsagari (2014)'s LAL questionnaire which includes three factors i.e. Language Testing and Assessment (LTA), classroom-focused LTA, and purposes of testing, content and concepts of LTA was administered to the participants. The quantitative data were descriptively analysed through the SPSS program in order to identify EFL teachers' training levels and needs in online language assessment. The qualitative data for the study were gathered through written structured interviews with (n) EFL teachers and analyzed using inductive methods. The study's findings revealed that the teachers have a high level of assessment literacy in terms of both face-to-face and online assessment and are familiar with basic assessment tools. However, there is a gap between their theoretical knowledge of assessment and their classroom practices. Additionally, the teachers expressed a need for more in-service training in assessing the skills of English language learners in online environments.

Abstract:A lot of research has been conducted about using new media in learning and teaching. However, this study takes into account and sheds light on the attitudes of EFL students regarding the usage of new mediums for English language learning and teaching during COVID-19. This study explores the advantages and challenges of using new media during online classes for the English language. The data of this study is collected through 5 EFL students' interviews and from questionnaires which were distributed among250 EFL students. The findings of this study reveal positive attitudes of EFL students towards the integration of technology for ELL and ELT in the COVID-19 context. In addition, this study also shows a few students' suggestions about the usage of new media that would be very effective for Teachers' teaching styles as well as students' learning points of view.

Abstract:With the abrupt emergence and dissemination of the COVID-19 pandemic, all dimensions of life have been immensely affected across the globe. Concerning education, face-to-face classes have been replaced by online classes. This quick transformation may have brought about both advantages and disadvantages for education stakeholders and, accordingly, call for empirical studies to shed light on them. Hence, the present study aimed at demonstrating the advantages and disadvantages of online classes from the Iranian university English teachers’ (n = 16) perceptions. To this aim, a phenomenographic approach was used to analyze the participants’ perceptions gained through a reflective written statement. Findings yielded five advantages, including flexibility, self-directiveness, cost-effectiveness, improvement of professional competence, and increased motivation, as well as four disadvantages, namely, additional workload, technical and institution barriers, absence of face-to-face interactions, and student dishonesty. Finally, the study ends with proposing some implications for different stakeholders.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine undergraduate EFL students’ perceptions about their experiences attending online classes at a Saudi higher education institute during the COVID-19 pandemic. Random sampling was used to obtain the subjects of the study, twelve undergraduate EFL students who attended online classes for the first time at Al-Baha University, Saudi Arabia. A SWOT analysis was used to process the collected data. The main strengths of using online classes in the EFL context were time/place flexibility, promoting a more active/interactive learning style, and the availability of recorded sessions, all of which helped the students when they were reviewing the asynchronously-delivered content. The weaknesses were all related to technical issues (access to an adequate internet connection and an appropriate device on which to access the internet). This study is expected to generate new insights into the process of implementing online classes or blended classes to teach the English language in the Saudi context, and to examine the potential strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to such an adoption at the target university during the shift to online classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings may be beneficial for other higher education institutions with a similar context in Saudi Arabia and may benefit higher education policymakers in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract:For ages, teaching and learning face-to-face has been very popular and considered the best way to achieve knowledge and accomplish academic activities. However, during the Covid-19 Pandemic, where on the one side, the whole world was searching for a solution to cope with the situation on the other side online learning demonstrated a substantial alternative. The present paper aimed to investigate the teachers and students’ perceptions of the emergency online learning process, especially for intensive English writing courses. The study is descriptive using the qualitative research methodology. The two focus groups (teacher and student) are interviewed, consisting of 42 participants, asking open-ended questions mainly about the benefits and challenges of the writing course during the Pandemic. The paper ends with the teachers and students’ positive response that indicates the thrilled and jubilant welcome of the synchronized online/virtual learning in the latest situation that emerged due to the Pandemic. Eventually, the study discussed the quality assurance efforts, particularly towards the spontaneous conduction of lectures infused with motivation, responsibility, discipline, and flexibility offered without any interruption. The Internet proved a great learning tool in assuring many resources.

Abstract:This study aims to explore the experiences of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in teaching productive skills during emergency distance learning (ERT) and the COVID-19 pandemic and their recommendations for teaching productive skills online. Phenomenological inquiry, which is one of the qualitative designs, was employed to conduct the study. It took place in the 2020-2021 academic year in Turkey. Participants of the study consisted of 16 English as a Foreign Language teachers. Convenience sampling was executed to designate the study participants. The main data collection tool was semi-structured interview questions and data was collected via individual interviews, a focus group interview and via form by e-mail. Content analysis was administered in the data analysis process. Study results explored teachers mostly agreed on the fact that online education had its advantages such as easy materials access and online tools and some disadvantages such as lack of interaction, lack of scaffolding, internet access problems and learner-related problems. Also, they stated that it was hard to engage learners during the process, so they used games, authentic materials, videos, discussions and web 2.0 tools to provide engagement. Teachers discovered new online platforms and tools to make their lessons efficient. They mostly suggested changing the assessment style, making participation compulsory and conducting activities that can engage learners in the learning-teaching process. Consequently, it was seen that teaching productive skills in ERT was challenging in terms of student participation; however, teachers found solutions to it and they thought it was not a bad idea to teach productive skills online, especially speaking. Accordingly, hybrid education can be considered in the future in teaching English and teaching productive skills.
Teachers' views related the middle school curriculum for distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:This qualitative study aims to examine teachers' opinions concerning the middle school curricula that have been in use for years, in order to determine its suitability for distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants consisted of eighteen middle school teachers from different subject areas in Turkey. A maximum variation sampling method was employed for participant selection. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews. Due to the pandemic, the interviews were conducted using video conferencing applications. The data was analyzed through content analysis. According to the findings, the teachers report that while they are effective in achieving cognitive objectives, they have difficulties in achieving affective and psychomotor objectives. In addition, the teachers do not prefer to design their own materials, rather they mainly benefit from ready-to-use materials during emergency distance education. The teachers also reveal that direct instruction and questioning were the teaching methods and techniques they preferred in online courses and that they were unable to adapt other methods and techniques to distance education, which resulted in students experiencing teacher-centered activities. Moreover, the teachers complain about students not attending the online courses on time or even at all, their disinterest, a lack of instant feedback, limited communication with students, and insufficient course lengths. Another critical finding was that the teachers only use homework, end-of-unit quizzes, and participation to online courses as measurement and evaluation tools and agree that they are unable to administer reliable and valid evaluation tools. The limitations of the study and implications for future research are later discussed.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to reveal the opinions of teachers and students about the distance education applications carried out in the COVID-19 pandemic, which was identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and has spread around the globe in no time. The population of the research consists of 16 teachers and 20 students. The data were analyzed by content analysis technique and divided into themes, sub-themes and codes. It was concluded that students and teachers have positive and negative opinions about distance education activities. The fact that education can be carried out in a planned and scheduled manner even under extraordinary conditions is frequently expressed in positive opinions. Issues such as restricted interaction, infrastructure problems and lack of equipment are among the remarkable negative opinions regarding distance education activities. In addition, opinions have been put forward that distance education will be used more effectively in the future along with necessary improvement and in-service training.

Abstract:This qualitative study explores the English learning experiences of 30 Grade 5 students from three mainstream schools in Kazakhstan during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was informed by Benson et al.'s (2011) four-dimensional model of language learning beyond the classroom: (a) location (physical vs. virtual), (b) formality (formal vs. informal agents), (c) locus of control (other-directed vs. self-directed goals) and (d) pedagogy. Data were collected through online individual interviews and students' drawings. The data suggest that the participants' English teachers used mainly Zoom and WhatsApp platforms for delivering the online classes. The participants were critical of their English teachers' practices, particularly, the overuse of WhatsApp, the scarcity of co-operative activities and delays in responding to inquiries. Consequently, 16 participants (53%) were receiving face-to-face and virtual private tutoring in English (PT-E). Although face-to-face PT-E may be unsafe during the pandemic, PT-E was a parental strategy to free themselves from the burden of tracking their children's progress. The participants acted agentively, not only reflecting on the disadvantages of online education but also on its benefits, including its being more convenient and able to help them improve their self-reliance and technology skills. The pedagogical implications and areas for further research are suggested.
