Abstract:Random sequential adsorption (RSA) is a broadly used model for irreversible deposition on substrates. Over the last decades, a huge number of works have been published concerning this topic. Here we give a brief review of the results for irreversible deposition on two-dimensional discrete substrates. Depositing objects are randomly and sequentially adsorbed onto the substrate, and they are not allowed to overlap, so the jamming coverage θ j a m is less than in close packing. The kinetics of the process is described by the time-dependence of the coverage fraction θ ( t ) , and for the discrete substrates, this dependence was found to be of the form: θ ( t ) = θ j a m − A e − t / σ . Another topic of interest is the percolation of the deposit that can occur at a certain coverage. The coverage of the surface is increased through the RSA process up to the percolation threshold when a cluster that extends through the whole system appears. A percolating cluster arises in the system when the opposite edges are connected via some path of nearest neighbor sites occupied by the particles. Studying percolation is of great interest due to its relevance to conductivity in composite materials, flow through porous media, polymerization, the properties of nanomaterials, etc.

Abstract:Adsorption of trimers and hexamers built of identical spheres was studied numerically using the Random Sequential Adsorption (RSA) algorithm. Particles were adsorbed on a two dimensional, flat and homogeneous surface. Numerical simulations allow to establish the maximal random coverage ratio, RSA kinetics as well as the Available Surface Function (ASF), which is crucial for determining kinetics of the adsorption process obtained experimentally. Additionally, the density autocorrelation function was measured. All the results were compared with previous results obtained for spheres, dimers and tetramers.

Abstract:Random sequential adsorption (RSA) of polymer, modeled as a chain of identical spheres, is systematically studied. In order to control precisely anisotropy and number of degrees of freedom, two different kinds of polymers are used. In the first one, monomers are placed along a straight line, whereas in the second, relative orientations of particles are random. Such polymers fill a flat homogeneous surface randomly. The paper focuses on maximal random coverage ratio and adsorption kinetics dependence on polymer size, shape anisotropy, and numbers of degrees of freedom. Obtained results were discussed and compared with other numerical experiments and theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Adsorption of a tetramer built of four identical spheres was studied numerically using the random sequential adsorption (RSA) algorithm. Tetramers were adsorbed on a two-dimensional, flat and homogeneous surface. Two different models of the adsorbate were investigated: a rhomboid and a square one; monomer centres were put on vertices of rhomboids and squares, respectively. Numerical simulations allow us to establish the maximal random coverage ratio as well as the available surface function (ASF), which is crucial for determining kinetics of the adsorption process. These results were compared with data obtained experimentally for KfrA plasmid adsorption. Additionally, the density autocorrelation function was measured.

Abstract:Irreversible adsorption of spheres on flat collectors having dimension $d<2$ is studied. Molecules are adsorbed on Sierpinski's Triangle and Carpet like fractals ($1<d<2$), and on General Cantor Set ($d<1$). Adsorption process is modeled numerically using Random Sequential Adsorption (RSA) algorithm. The paper concentrates on measurement of fundamental properties of coverages, i.e. maximal random coverage ratio and density autocorrelation function, as well as RSA kinetics. Obtained results allow to improve phenomenological relation between maximal random coverage ratio and collector dimension. Moreover, simulations show that, in general, most of known dimensional properties of adsorbed monolayers are valid for non-integer dimensions.

Abstract:Kinetics of random sequential adsorption (RSA) of spheres on flat, two-dimensional surfaces is governed by a power law with exponent $-1/2$. The study has shown that for RSA of nearly spherically symmetric particles this exponent is $-1/3$, whereas other characteristics typically measured in RSA simulations approach values known for spheres with the increase of symmetry of the particles.

Abstract:The first theoretical study of a dimer's adsorption process at homogenous surface is presented. By using the RSA algorithm, we show example monolayers, discuss estimations of random jamming coverage and measure the surface blocking function, which could be used for calculating real systems kinetics. We also found the correlation function for generated coverages and analyzed orientational ordering inside the adsorbed monolayer. Results were compared with theoretical and experimental data. Abstract:The adsorption or adhesion of large particles (proteins, colloids, cells, >...) at the liquid-solid interface plays an important role in many diverse applications. Despite the apparent complexity of the process, two features are particularly important: 1) the adsorption is often irreversible on experimental time scales and 2) the adsorption rate is limited by geometric blockage from previously adsorbed particles. A coarse-grained description that encompasses these two properties is provided by sequential adsorption models whose simplest example is the random sequential adsorption (RSA) process. In this article, we review the theoretical formalism and tools that allow the systematic study of kinetic and structural aspects of these sequential adsorption models. We also show how the reference RSA model may be generalized to account for a variety of experimental features including particle anisotropy, polydispersity, bulk diffusive transport, gravitational effects, surface-induced conformational and orientational change, desorption, and multilayer formation. In all cases, the significant theoretical results are presented and their accuracy (compared to computer simulation) and applicability (compared to experiment) are discussed.

Abstract:An extension of the Random Sequential Adsorption (RSA) model has been proposed recently, motivated by the coverage of oil droplets by DNA-functionalized colloidal particles. Particles arrive to a flat substrate with a uniform flux F but they can only adsorb on patches. Patches diffuse on the substrate with a diffusion coefficient D if they are free and they remain immobile when attached to an adsorbed particle. The adsorption is considered irreversible and particles cannot adsorb on top of each other. Thus, the system reaches a jammed state, consisting of a monolayer where no more particles can adsorb. We performed Monte Carlo simulations to study the adsorption kinetics and jammed-state morphology on a one-dimensional lattice. We show that, while the time-dependence of the coverage depends on F and D, the jammed-state coverage depends solely on the ratio F/D. This result is grasped by a simple mean-field calculation. We also report two different regimes for the functional dependence of the jammed-state coverage on the size of the particles, for low and high density of patches.

Abstract:We study two-dimensional random sequential adsorption (RSA) of flat polygons and rounded squares aligned in parallel to find a transition in the asymptotic behavior of the kinetics of packing growth. Differences in the kinetics for RSA of disks and parallel squares were confirmed in previous analytical and numerical reports. Here, by analyzing the two classes of shapes in question we can precisely control the shape of packed figures and thus localize the transition. Additionally, we study how the asymptotic properties of the kinetics depend on the packing size. We also provide accurate estimations of saturated packing fractions. The microstructural properties of generated packings are analyzed in terms of the density autocorrelation function.

Abstract:Random sequential adsorption algorithm is a popular tool for modelling structure of monolayers built in irreversible adsorption experiments. However, this algorithm becomes very inefficient when the density of molecules in a layer rises. This problem has already been solved for a very limited range of basic shapes. This study presents a solution that can be used for any molecule occupying the surface that can be modelled by any number of different disks. Additionally, the presented algorithm stops when there is no possibility to add another shape to the monolayer. This allows to study properties of fully saturated, two-dimensional random packings built of complex shapes. For instance, the presented algorithm has been used to determine the mean saturated packing fractions of monolayers built of dimers and fibrinogen.

A model of random sequential adsorption on a ladder graph

Abstract:In random sequential adsorption (RSA), objects are deposited on a substrate randomly, irreversibly, and sequentially. Attempts of deposition that lead to an overlap with previously deposited objects are discarded. The process continues until the system reaches a jammed state when no further additions are possible. We analyze a class of RSA models on a two-row square ladder graph in which landing on an empty site in a graph is allowed when at least $b$ neighboring sites in the graph are unoccupied ($b \in \mathbb{N}$). In this paper we complement this typical way of studying RSA models by analyzing also the structure of the set of all jammed states in a static way, disregarding the dynamics that led to a particular jammed state. In both considered settings (dynamic and static) we provide explicit expressions for key statistics that describe the average proportion of the substrate covered by deposited objects, and then we comment on significant differences between the two settings. We illustrate all of our findings through a toy model for ensembles of trapped Rydberg atoms with blockade range $b$.

Abstract:The different variants of two-stage random sequential adsorption (RSA) models for packing of disks and discorectangles on a two-dimensional (2D) surface were investigated. In the SD model, the discorectangles were first deposited and then the disks were added. In the DS model, the disks were first deposited and then discorectangles were added. At the first stage the particles were deposited up to the selected concentration and at the final (second) stage the particles were deposited up to the saturated (jamming) state. The main parameters of the models were the concentration of particles deposited at the first stage, aspect ratio of the discorectangles $\varepsilon$ (length to diameter of ratio $\varepsilon=l/d$) and disk diameter $D$. All distances were measured using the value of $d$ as a unit of measurement of linear dimensions, the disk diameter was varied in the interval $D \in [1-10]$, and the aspect ratio value was varied in the interval $\varepsilon\in [1-50]$. The dependencies of the jamming coverage of particles deposited at the second stage versus the parameters of the models were analyzed. The presence of first deposited particles for both models regulated the maximum possible disk diameter, $D_{max}$ (SD model) or the maximum aspect ratio, $\varepsilon_{max}$ (DS model). This behavior was explained by the deposition of particles in the second stage into triangular (SD model) or elongated (DS model) pores formed by particles deposited at the first stage. The percolation connectivity of disks (SD model) and discorectangles (DS model) for the particles with a hard core and a soft shell structure was analyzed. The disconnectedness was ensured by overlapping of soft shells. The dependencies of connectivity versus the parameters of SD and DS models were also analyzed.

Abstract:We study saturated packings produced according to random sequential adsorption (RSA) protocol built of identical rectangles deposited on a flat, continuous plane. An aspect ratio of rectangles is defined as the length-to-width ratio, $f=l/w$. The rectangles have a fixed unit area (i.e., $l \times w=1$), and therefore, their shape is defined by the value of $f$ ($l=\sqrt{f}$ and $w=1/\sqrt{f}$). The rectangles are allowed to align either vertically or horizontally with equal probability. The particles are deposited on a flat square substrate of side length $L$ (measured in units of particle length, $L \in [20, 1000]$) and periodic boundary conditions are applied along both directions. The finite-size scaling effects are characterized by a scaled anisotropy defined as $\alpha = l/L = \sqrt{f}/L$. We showed that the properties of such packings strongly depend on the value of aspect ratio $f$ and the most significant scaling effects are observed for relatively long rectangles when $l\ge L/2$ (i.e. $\alpha \ge 0.5$). It is especially visible for the mean packing fraction as a function of the scaled anisotropy $\alpha$. The kinetics of packing growth for low to moderate rectangle anisotropy is to be governed by $\ln t/t$ law, where $t$ is proportional to the number of RSA iterations, which is the same as in the case of RSA of parallel squares. We also analyzed global orientational ordering in such packings and properties of domains consisting of a set of neighboring rectangles of the same orientation, and the probability that such domain forms a percolation.

Abstract:The random sequential adsorption (RSA) model is a classical model in Statistical Physics for adsorption on two-dimensional surfaces. Objects are deposited sequentially at random and adsorb irreversibly on the landing site, provided that they do not overlap any previously adsorbed object. The kinetics of adsorption ceases when no more objects can be adsorbed (jamming state). Here, we investigate the role of post-relaxation on the jamming state and percolation properties of RSA of dimers on a two-dimensional lattice. We consider that, if the deposited dimer partially overlaps with a previously adsorbed one, a sequence of dimer displacements may occur to accommodate the new dimer. The introduction of this simple relaxation dynamics leads to a more dense jamming state than the one obtained with RSA without relaxation. We also consider the anisotropic case, where one dimer orientation is favored over the other, finding a non-monotonic dependence of the jamming coverage on the strength of anisotropy. We find that the density of adsorbed dimers at which percolation occurs is reduced with relaxation, but the value depends on the strength of anisotropy.

Abstract:Conformations and dynamics of adsorbed protein-like chains are investigated by using Monte Carlo simulation based on the modified orientation-dependent monomer–monomer interaction (ODI) model. The chain size and shape of adsorbed protein-like chains, such as mean-square end-to-end distance 〈R2〉, mean-square radius of gyration 〈S2〉xy (or 〈S2〉z), shape factors 〈sfi*〉(i=1,2,3), and 〈δ*〉 are discussed here. At the same time, fraction of adsorbed segment fa and average orientation of bond 〈P2(cosθ)〉 are also investigated. The adsorbed protein-like chains trend to be more flat when adsorption interaction energy becomes strong. Different kinds of interactions (such as contact interaction, sheet interaction, spin–spin interaction, helical interaction, and adsorbed interaction) are considered in detail. Dynamics of adsorbed protein-like chains are investigated by calculating their diffusion coefficients, and we find that there exist the relationships of Dxy∼N−γxyand Dz∼N−γz, and the values of γxy and γz are 4–5 times larger than that of general self-avoiding walk (SAW) chains. These investigations may provide some insights into adsorption of proteins.

The shift between centers of spheres varied from 0.0 to 8.0 sphere diameters. Numerical simulations allowed determine random sequential adsorption kinetics, saturated random coverage ratio as well as available surface function and density autocorrelation function.
