Abstract:Despite increasing efforts to recycle plastic materials, large quantities of plastics waste continue to accumulate in the oceans. Persistent mechanical and photochemical degradation of plastics in the oceans yields micro- and nanoscale plastic particles, which represent potential vectors for mobilizing hydrophobic carcinogens in an aqueous milieu. Yet, the fate and potential threats associated with plastics remain largely unexplored. Herein, we apply an accelerated weathering protocol to consumer plastics to characterize the effect of photochemical weathering on the size, morphology, and chemical composition of nanoplastics under defined conditions and validate that the photochemical degradation is consistent with plastics harvested from the Pacific Ocean. Machine learning algorithms trained with accelerated weathering data successfully classify weathered plastics from nature. We demonstrate that photodegradation of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-containing plastics produces enough CO2 to induce a mineralization process that results in the deposition of CaCO3 on nanoplastics. Finally, we determine that despite UV-radiation induced photochemical degradation and mineral deposition, nanoplastics retain their ability to sorb, mobilize, and increase bioaccessibility of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water and under simulated physiological gastric and intestinal conditions.
Contribution of free hydroxyl radical to the formation of micro(nano)plastics and release of additives during polyethylene degradation in water

Abstract:The omnipresence of secondary microplastics (MPs) in aquatic ecosystems has become an increasingly alarming public health concern. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an important oxidant in nature and the most stable reactive oxygen species occurred in natural water. In order to explore the contribution of free ˙OH generated from H2O2-driven Fenton-like reactions on the degradation of polyethylene (PE) and generation of micro- and nano-scale plastics in water, a batch experiment was conducted over a period of 620 days in water treated with micromolar H2O2. The incorporation of H2O2 in water induced the formation of flake-like micro(nano)-sized particles due to intensified oxidative degradation of PE films. The presence of ˙OH significantly enhanced the generation of both micro- and nano-scale plastics exhibiting a higher proportion of particles in the range of 200-500 nm compared to the Control. Total organic carbon in the H2O2 treated solution was nearly 174-fold higher than that of the Control indicating a substantial liberation of organic compounds due to the oxidative degradation of native carbon chain of PE and subsequent decomposition of its additives. The highly toxic butylated hydroxytoluene detected from the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis implied the toxicological behavior of secondary micro(nano)plastics influenced by the oxidation and decomposition processes The findings from this study further expand our understanding of the role of ˙OH in degrading PE micro-scale plastics into nanoparticles as an implication of naturally occurring H2O2 in aquatic environments. In the future, further attention should be drawn to the underlying mechanisms of H2O2-driven in-situ Fenton reaction mediated by natural environmental conditions targeting the alternation of light and darkness on the oxidative degradation of plastics.
Size-dependent long–term weathering converting floating polypropylene macro- and microplastics into nanoplastics in coastal seawater environments

Abstract:In this study, we systematically developed the long–term photoaging behavior of different-sized polypropylene (PP) floating plastic wastes in a coastal seawater environment. After 68 d of laboratory accelerated UV irradiation, the PP plastic particle size decreased by 99.3 ± 0.15%, and nanoplastics (average size: 435 ± 250 nm) were produced with a maximum yield of 57.9%, evidencing that natural sunlight irradiation–induced long-term photoaging ultimately converts floating plastic waste in marine environments into micro- and nanoplastics. Subsequently, when comparing the photoaging rate of different sized PP plastics in coastal seawater, we discovered that large sized PP plastics (1000-2000 and 5000-7000 μm) showed a lower photoaging rate than that of small sized PP plastic debris (0–150 and 300–500 μm), with the decrease rate of plastic crystallinity as follow: 0–150 μm (2.01 d −1 ) > 300–500 μm (1.25 d −1 ) > 1000–2000 μm (0.780 d −1 ) and 5000-7000 μm (0.900 d −1 ). This result can be attributed to the small size PP plastics producing more reactive oxygen species (ROS) species, with the formation capacity of hydroxyl radical •OH as follows: 0–150 μm (6.46 × 10 −15 M) > 300–500 μm (4.87 × 10 −15 M) > 500–1000 (3.61 × 10 −15 M) and 5000–7000 μm (3.73 × 10 −15 M). The findings obtained in this study offer a new perspective on the formation and ecological risks of PP nanoplastics in current coastal seawater environments.

Abstract:Polyurethane (PU) synthetic leathers possess an intricate plastic composition, including polyester (PET) base fabrics and upper PU resin, but the release of fragments from the complexes is unclear. Therefore, we investigated the photodegradation trends of PET base fabrics with PU coating (PET-U) as a representative of composite plastics. Attention was paid to the comparison of the photoaging process of PET-U with that of pure PET base fabric (PET-P). To reveal the potential for chain scission, physical and chemical changes (e.g., surface morphology, molecular weight, and crystallinity) of the two fabrics were explored. The generation of microplastic fibers (MPFs) and microplastic particles (MPPs) was distinguished. Compared with PET-P, PET-U showed a similar but delayed trend in various characteristics and debris release rate as the photoaging time prolonged. Even so, after 360 h of illumination, the generated number of MPs (including MPFs and MPPs) rose considerably to 9.32 × 107 MPs/g, and the amount of released nanoplastics (NPs) increased to 2.70 × 1011 NPs/g from PET-U. The suppression of MP formation from PET-U was potentially directed by the physical shielding of the upper PU layer and the dropped MPs, which resisted the photochemical radical effect. The components of dissolved organic matter derived from plastics (P-DOM) were separated by molecular weight using a size-exclusion chromatography-diode array detector-organic carbon detector/organic nitrogen detector (SEC-DAD-OCD/OND), and the results showed that a larger amount of carbon- and nitrogen-containing chemical substances were generated in PET-U, accompanied by more aromatic and fluorescent compounds. The results provided theoretical bases and insights for future research on the risks of plastic debris from PU synthetic leathers on aquatic organisms and indicated feasible directions for exploring combined pollution studies of plastics.
Quantification of the Redox Properties of Microplastics and Their Effect on Arsenite Oxidation

Abstract:Microplastics have attracted global concern. The environmental-weathering processes control their fate, trans-port, transformation, and toxicity to wildlife and human health, but their impacts on biogeochemical redox processes remain largely unknown. Herein, multiple spectroscopic and electrochemical approaches in concert with wet-chemistry analyses were employed to characterize the redox properties of weathered microplastics. The spectroscopic results indicated that weathering of phenol-formaldehyde resins (PFs) by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) led to a slight decrease in the content of phenol functional groups, accompanied by an increase in semiquinone radicals, quinone, and carboxylic groups. Electrochemical and wet-chemistry quantifications, coupled with microbial- chemical characterizations, demonstrated that the PFs exhibited appreciable electron-donating capacity (0.264- 1.15 mmol e - g -1 ) and electron-accepting capacity (0.120-0.300 mmol e - g -1 ). Specifically, the phenol groups and semiquinone radicals were responsible for the electron-donating capacity, whereas the quinone groups dominated the electron-accepting capacity. The reversible redox peaks in the cyclic voltammograms and the enhanced electron-donating capacity after accepting electrons from microbial reduction demonstrated the reversibility of the electron-donating and-accepting reactions. More importantly, the electron-donating phenol groups and weathering-induced semiquinone radicals were found to mediate the production of H2O2 from oxygen for arsenite oxidation. In addition to the H2O2-weathered PFs, the ozone-aged PF and polystyrene were also found to have electron-donating and arsenite-oxidation capacity. This study reports important redox properties of microplastics and their effect in mediating contaminant transformation. These findings will help to better understand the fate, transformation, and biogeochemical roles of microplastics on element cycling and contaminant fate.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are ubiquitous and contaminate soil, surface waters, atmospheric aerosol, precipitations, indoor and outdoor environments. However, the occurrence, transformation and fate of NPs in the environment are still unclear. In this work, polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) are used as a proxy of NPs to study their reactivity and potential impact on atmospheric and surface waters. In particular, the reactivity with hydroxyl radicals (OH) in the aqueous phase is investigated. For the first time, a reactivity constant for the reaction of NPs with OH is measured, strongly dependent on the exposed particle surface area of NPs. Degradation products (short chain carboxylic acids and aromatic compounds), obtained by direct and OH-mediated photolysis of PS-NPs suspensions, are identified by mass spectrometry. Irradiation of a PS-NPs suspension under natural sunlight for 1 year has shown the formation of formic acid and organic compounds similar to those found in riverine and cloud dissolved organic matter, which could contribute significantly to the dissolved organic matter in the aqueous phase.

Abstract:The occurrence and transformation of microplastics (MPs) remaining in the water treatment plants has recently attracted considerable attention. However, few efforts have been made to investigate the behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from MPs during oxidation processes. In this study, the characteristics of DOM leached from MPs during typical ultraviolet (UV)-based oxidation was focused on. The toxicity and disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation potentials of MP-derived DOM were further investigated. Overall, UV-based oxidation significantly enhanced the aging and fragmentation of highly hydroscopic MPs. The mass scales of leachates to MPs increased from 0.03% - 0.18% at initial stage to 0.09% - 0.71% after oxidation, which were significantly higher than those leached by natural light exposure. Combined fluorescence analysis with high resolution mass spectrometer scan confirmed that the dominant MP-derived DOM are chemical additives. PET-derived DOM and PA6-derived DOM showed inhibition of Vibrio fischeri activity with corresponding EC50 of 2.84 mg/L and 4.58 mg/L of DOC. Bioassay testing with Chlorella vulgaris and Microcystis aeruginosa showed that high concentrations of MP-derived DOM inhibited algal growth by disrupting the cell membrane permeability and integrity. MP-derived DOM had a similar chlorine consumption (1.63 ± 0.41 mg/DOC) as surface water (1.0 - 2.0 mg/DOC), and MP-derived DOM mainly served as precursors for the investigated DBPs. Contrary to the results of previous studies, the DBP yields from MP-derived DOM were relatively lower than those of aquatic DOM under simulated distribution system conditions. This suggests that MP-derived DOM itself rather than serving as DBP precursor might be potential toxic concern.
Effects of advanced oxidation processes on leachates and properties of microplastics

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) in natural environments undergo various aging processes. So far, little is known about the effects of chemical oxidation on leachates and properties of MPs. Here, we investigated the removal of pigment red from MPs by ozonation, Fenton, and heat-activated persulfate treatments, and further explored the nanoscale surface properties of treated MPs. Experimental results indicated that advanced oxidation processes effectively degraded pigment red released from MPs and the degradation rate was much faster than the leaching rate of pigments. Dominant reactive oxygen radicals in the ozone, Fenton, and heat-activated persulfate systems were identified as O2•−, HO•, and SO4•−, respectively. Height ranges of untreated, ozone-treated, Fenton-treated, and persulfate-treated MPs were 73 nm, 163 nm, 195 nm, and 206 nm, respectively. Oxidation of the -CH3 and -CH2 bonds occurred on the surface of treated MPs and the persulfate system achieved more serious oxidation degree than the ozone and Fenton systems. Addition of pigment red to the plastic polymer increased the glass transition temperature of MPs, which then showed a decline after advanced oxidation treatments except Fenton. The surface of persulfate-treated MPs was the stiffest, but the stiffness distribution of the ozone-treated and Fenton-treated MPs was more uneven. These research findings provide promising strategies to accelerate the aging process of MPs and contribute to a better understanding of the effects of aging on the environmental behavior of MPs.

A carbon-14 radiotracer-based study on the phototransformation of polystyrene nanoplastics in water versus in air

Abstract:Nanoplastic (<1 mu m plastic debris) pollution, derived from degradation of larger plastic debris or direct release from cosmetic or cleaning products, is an emerging concern in the environment. In this study, we quantitatively investigated the degradation and mineralization of polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics under ultraviolet (UV) radiation at 254 nm using C-14 radioisotope tracer technology. C-14-polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics were synthesized from C-14-styrene. Moreover, to study the role of water during the photodegradation of PS nanoplastics, C-14-PS nanoplastics were exposed to UV radiation in air or suspended in water. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that after 48 h of UV irradiation, C-O groups formed on the surface while no significant change was observed from the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, indicating that short-term photo-oxidation only occurs on the thin surface layer of the PS nanoplastics. The molecular weight (M-w) of the PS nanoplastics increased in air after the irradiation, suggesting cross-linking of the PS chains, while it did not show significant changes in the presence of water. The mineralization of the PS nanoplastics was higher in water (17.1 +/- 0.55%) than in air (6.17 +/- 0.1%). A significant amount (11.0 +/- 0.1%) of by-products with small M-w was detected in water during UV irradiation, much higher than that being washed out from the surface of nanoplastics exposed in air. The higher photoreactivity in water suggests that the mechanisms underlying the phototransformation of the PS nanoplastics in the two matrices could be different. The present study provided the first evidence of photodegradation of PS nanoplastics in aqueous environments.
Effects of Photochlorination on the Physicochemical Transformation of Polystyrene Nanoplastics: Mechanism and Environmental Fate

Abstract:With the increasingly severe plastic pollution, the environmental behavior and effects of nanoplastics (NPs) have attracted much attention. The transformation of NPs in natural and engineered environments (e.g., photooxidation, disinfection) can significantly alter the physicochemical properties and thus affect the fate and toxicity of NPs. However, how solar irradiation with free chlorine, an inevitable process once NPs enter the environment from wastewater treatment plants, affects the physicochemical properties of NPs is still unclear. In this study, the behavior and mechanism of polystyrene (PS) NPs transformation in the solar/chlorine process were evaluated. The results demonstrated that solar irradiation significantly enhanced the physicochemical transformation of PS NPs during chlorination, including chain scission, surface oxidation, and organic release. In addition, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy analysis using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and reactive species quenching experiments showed that chain scission and surface oxidation of PS NPs were primarily caused by direct oxidation of hydroxyl radicals and ozone, while reactive chlorine species played an indirect role. Moreover, photochlorination-induced changes in the properties of PS NPs enhanced the colloidal stability in synthetic wastewater solution and toxicity to Caenorhabditis elegans. These findings reveal an important transformation behavior of nanoplastics in the environment and emphasize the importance of accounting for photochlorination to accurately assess the ecological risk of nanoplastics.
Neglected but Crucial Role Played by Rainwater in the Photodegradation of Plastic

Abstract:Plastic pollution poses a worldwide environmental threat, yet limited attention has been paid to its terrestrial fate. Although rainwater has low photochemical activity, its long-term effect on the photodegradation of plastic waste has predominantly remained unexplored. In this study, poly(vinyl chloride) bags, polypropylene masks, polystyrene foam, and polyethylene bags were exposed to sunlight, with or without rainwater, for 12 months under field conditions. The results revealed that the plastics exposed to rainwater released enormous amounts of organic carbon and severely aged microplastics in the first few months. Rainwater-exposed plastics also exhibited strong oxidation, and rainwater altered the order of functional group changes of commercial plastics (except polystyrene foam), as evidenced by two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) analysis. To provide more direct evidence of the relationship between rainwater exposure and the photodegradation of plastic/microplastic, a laboratory experiment was conducted. The laboratory experiments confirmed the promoting effect of rainwater on photodegradation. Moreover, a stronger signal of reactive oxygen species was detected with an electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer on microplastics exposed to rainwater residues compared with those not exposed to rainwater, which highlights the significance of rainwater as a crucial external source of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Overall, these findings provide essential insights into the effect of rainwater on plastic photodegradation.
Degradation of Microplastics by a Thermal Fenton Reaction

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in the environment and are infiltrating the food chain, causing potential risks to living beings. However, current methods of MP removal from an aqueous environment are limited by low efficiency. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are emerging techniques for MP purification. Herein, a hydrothermal coupled Fenton system is developed for decomposition of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene, achieving 95.9% weight loss in 16 h and 75.6% mineralization efficiency in 12 h. The high effectiveness is attributed to the synergy of hydrothermal hydrolysis, proton-rich environment, and massive production of hydroxyl radicals. The system is also efficient to remediate different petroleum-based plastics and maintains high efficiency in practical water bodies. Characterizations revealed a two-stage degradation process: chain unfolding/stretching and oxidation, giving rise to the formation of carbonyl groups and decreased crystallinity of MPs during the hydrothermal treatment. The chain stretching stage is pivotal to the whole treatment because it remarkably facilitates subsequent chain cleavage and Fenton oxidation. This study provides a new approach to removing MPs in water bodies and new insights into MP degradation by the AOP technology.
Accelerated fragmentation of two thermoplastics (polylactic acid and polypropylene) into microplastics after UV radiation and seawater immersion

Abstract:To better understand the fate and assess the ingestible fraction of microplastics (by aquatic organisms), it is essential to quantify and characterize of their released from larger items under environmental realistic conditions. However, the current information on the fragmentation and size-based characteristics of released microplastics, for example from bio-based thermoplastics, is largely unknown. The goal of our work was to assess the fragmentation and release of microplastics, under ultraviolet (UV) radiation and in seawater, from polylactic acid (PLA) items, a bio-based polymer, and from polypropylene (PP) items, a petroleum-based polymer. To do so, we exposed pristine items of PLA and PP, immersed in filtered natural seawater, to accelerated UV radiation for 57 and 76 days, simulating 18 and 24 months of mean natural solar irradiance in Europe. Our results indicated that 76-day UV radiation induced the fragmentation of parent plastic items and the microplastics (50 - 5000 µm) formation from both PP and PLA items. The PP samples (48 ± 26 microplastics / cm2) released up to nine times more microplastics than PLA samples (5 ± 2 microplastics / cm2) after a 76-day UV exposure, implying that the PLA tested items had a lower fragmentation rate than PP. The particles' length of released microplastics was parameterized using a power law exponent (α), to assess their size distribution. The obtained α values were 3.04 ± 0.11 and 2.54 ± 0.06 (-) for 76-day UV weathered PP and PLA, respectively, meaning that PLA microplastics had a larger sized microplastics fraction than PP particles. With respect to their two-dimensional shape, PLA microplastics also had lower width-to-length ratio (0.51 ± 0.17) and greater fiber-shaped fractions (16%) than PP microplastics (0.57 ± 0.17% and 11%, respectively). Overall, the bio-based PLA items under study were more resistant to fragmentation and release of microplastics than the petroleum-based PP tested items, and the parameterized characteristics of released microplastics were polymer-dependent. Our work indicates that even though bio-based plastics may have a slower release of fragmented particles under UV radiation compared to conventional polymer types, they still have the potential to act as a source of microplastics in the marine environment, with particles being available to biota within ingestible size fractions, if not removed before major fragmentation processes.

Abstract:Microplastics have received considerable attention in recent years. Understanding the aging mechanism of plastics in different environments (land, fresh water, estuary, and ocean) is critical to control the microplastic formation. Therefore, the aging process of plastics, including polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), in different environments was simulated by analyzing their physical and chemical structures by using the Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. After 23 weeks, micro-scale microplastics (size less than 100 μm) could be extracted from the plastic surface through smashing waves in all fresh water and seawater samples. However, complete fragmentation was observed only in the case of thin-film plastics (TFPs, thickness of approximately 10 μm). This phenomenon indicated that TFPs disintegrated to microplastics more easily in the water system than on land, and the water flow notably affected the production of micro-scale particles. Furthermore, ultraviolet radiation affected the chemical structure of plastics through a two-stage process in all environments. In the initial stage, chemical aging occurred in the amorphous regions of both PE and PP, leading to the generation of newly functional groups such as C=O at 1717 cm-1, and a reduced contact angle. In the later stage, PE exhibited additional crystals and increased contact angles, whereas PP demonstrated the tendency of producing oxygen-containing functional groups that could reduce the crystallinity. In addition, several inorganic salts (such as sulfate and phosphorus) in seawater likely combined with C-H-type stretches, thereby promoting the chemical aging of plastics.
Insight into chain scission and release profiles from photodegradation of polycarbonate microplastics

Abstract:Bisphenol A polycarbonate (BPA-PC) is a kind of widely used engineering plastics. However, excessive usage causes the production of plastic wastes, following property changes of polymers and high risks of released chemicals during outdoor weathering. In this study, we systematically investigated the photoaging behavior of PC microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environment and evaluated the potential risk of released intermediates. Light irradiation along with mechanical abrasion facilitated the fragmentation of PC MPs and stimulated photooxidative modification during 640 h of ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Continuous degradation of the polymer was accompanied with dramatic decline of molecular weight. Also, BPA was released from irradiated PC MPs with a trend of an initial rapid increase followed by a decrease versus the irradiation time, and the maximum concentration of dropped BPA was detected up to 652.80 ± 72.89 μg/g (43.39% and 56.61% respectively in particles and leachates). However, the releasing amount of BPA in the leachate merely occupied 2.7% of the total organic carbon (TOC) leached out, suggesting that a great number of unknown organic products were produced other than BPA. Liquid chromatography-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (LC-TOF-MS) analysis showed that these organic compounds forming MPs-derived dissolved organic matter (MPs DOM) were partly composed of 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone (DHB), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (p-HBA) and methyparaben (MeP), which would also contribute to the estrogenic activity. The degradation pathway of PC MPs was elaborated with the photolysis process of PC dimer and BPA, and the remarkable photoaging of PC MPs was mainly dominated by the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS). The findings of this study indicated that understanding the photoaging process of PC MPs was vital to evaluate their integral cumulative estrogenic activity in aquatic environment, and further highlighted the notable possible risks of plastic leachates to exposed biota.

Abstract:Aggregation is the most fundamental process affecting the fate, transport, and risks of nanoplastics in aquatic environments. Weathering of nanoplastics alters their physiochemical properties and consequently, aggregation behavior. Here, we show that two weathering pathways, including UV-irradiation (the primary aging pathway in surface water) and sulfide-induced transformation (a commom process in anoxic environments) affect aggregation and colloidal stability of polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics differentially. Compared to sulfide-induced aging, UV-induced aging introduced more oxygen-containing functional groups on nanoplastic surface, even though significant amounts of O-functional groups formed during sulfide-induced aging, due to the hydroxyl radicals formed from the spontaneous oxidation of sulfide. Accordingly, UV-aged PS nanoplastics (PS-UV) exhibited a higher stability than sulfide-aged PS nanoplastics (PS-S) in a monovalent cation-dominated solution, due to enhanced electrostatic repulsion and weakened van der Waals attraction. However, stability of PS-UV was lower than that of PS-S in a divalent salt solution, due to bridging effects of divalent ions. The results underline the importance of comprehending the effects of diverse environmental weathering processes on nanoplastics hehaviors, particularly, those readily occur in anoxic environments but insufficiently investigate.

Abstract:Biodegradable plastic bags (BPBs), meant for eco-friendly, often inadequately degrade in compost, leading to microplastic pollution. In this study, the effect of Fenton-like reaction with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NMs) on the plastisphere microorganisms' evolution and the BPBs' aging mechanism was revealed by co-composting of food waste with BPBs for 40 days. The establishment of the Fenton-like reaction was confirmed, with the addition of Fenton-like reagent treatments resulting in an increase of 57.67% and 37.75% in H 2 O 2 levels during the composting, compared to the control group. Moreover, the structural characterization reveals that increasing oxygen content continuously generates reactive free radicals on the surface, leading to the formation of oxidative cavities. This process results in random chain-breaking, significantly reducing molecular weights by 39.27% and 38.81%, thus showcasing a deep-seated transformation in the plastic's molecular structure. Furthermore, the microbial network suggested that the Fenton-like reaction enriched plastisphere keystone species, thus accelerating the BPBs' aging. Additionally, the Fenton-like reaction improved compost maturity and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. These results reveal the bio-chemical mechanisms of BPBs aging and random chain-breaking by the Fenton-like reaction, under alternating oxidative/anoxic conditions of composting and provide a new insight to resolve the BPBs' pollutions.
