Abstract:Accurate synthesis of antenna radiation behavior is a complementary step towards simulation in antenna systems design process. In this paper, a spherical harmonic decomposition (SHD) and coupled structure electromagnetic statistical model (CSESM) methods are hybridized and adapted for the first time, to actively synthesize radiation characteristics using antenna feed array. The problem of finding the feed array aperture size, capable of synthesizing a required field intensity distribution, within a specified region for a reflector system signaling a satellite is also addressed. Relationship that exist between the required number of elements in feed array, frequency of operation, volume of the synthesis region, and the required reflector size is theoretically benchmarked. EM radiation behavior via antenna feed array is optimally synthesized using the proposed SHD-CSESM-based method. With this approach, operation limits on the synthesis of the signal field within a test volume of a given radius is predicted. Efficiency and effectiveness of SHD-CSESM-based EM field synthesis scheme unveiled are investigated for structures in a region where feed antennas are positioned distance away (focal point) from reflector system operating at Ka band. Experimental measurement data of a circularly polarized Ka-band 2×2-antenna feed array is compared with the proposed theoretical method, and results obtained demonstrate the validity of the proposed algorithm. Furthermore, for any wave number k or frequency f, the field radiation behaviour within the sphere can be accurately synthesized using and N order expansion and V≥(4N+1)/N array size. Results obtained show that the proposed synthesis method handles constrains related to both aperture domain and radiation domain. Hence, SHD-CSESM-based technique is a good candidate for EM field synthesis, with the notion of automating system design processes in the emerging and future EM field applications.
Synthesis of Near-Field Arrays based on Electromagnetic Inner Products

Abstract:Near-field antennas have been successfully adopted in several wireless applications. To exploit the high reconfigurability of array antennas, multiple synthesis techniques for arrays operating in the near-field region have been proposed. Building upon previous works on eigenmode expansions of the radiated fields, two synthesis methods for the excitations of near-field arrays based on the definition of an inner product on the electromagnetic fields are investigated: the "maximum norm" and "minimum error field norm" methods. The "maximum norm" method computes the array excitations that maximize either the active power flow through a target surface or the electric/magnetic energy stored in an assigned volume, depending on the adopted inner product. The performance of the maximum active power flow method is compared with the one of the simpler conjugate phase method. Furthermore, the limit solution achieved when the target surface reaches the far-field region is compared against the "maximum Beam Collection Efficiency" method. The "minimum error field norm" method allows to synthesize a given target field. As an example, the latter method is used to find the optimal excitation of a Plane Wave Generator with a spherical quiet zone. The effectiveness and performance of the discussed synthesis methods are validated through numerical simulations.

Abstract:The development of millimeter-wave phased array based on the digital beamforming architecture needs to overcome a physical-level challenge due to the contradiction between the massively integrated TR devices and the compact volume for thermal dissipation. In this work, we demonstrate an analog beamforming solution based on a reconfigurable Fresnel-zone-plate (RFZP) antenna for 28-GHz phased array. The proposed RFZP including 16x8 unit cells based on active frequency selective surface (FSS) with varactor diodes to implement a continuous 180 degrees phase tunability. The measured scan ranges up to +/- 50 degrees and +/- 30 degrees at horizontal plane and vertical plane, respectively. The proposed RFZP antenna is an attractive solution for millimeter-wave beamforming.

Abstract:Two near field models for the analysis of spatially fed planar array antennas are presented, compared and applied to a multi-frequency wideband direct layout optimization for mm-Wave 5G new radio (NR) indoor network coverage. One model is based on the direct application of the radiation equations directly derived from the A and F vector potentials. The second model is based on the superposition of far field contributions of all array elements, which are modelled as rectangular apertures with constant field. Despite the different assumptions made to develop both models, the degree of agreement between them in the computation of the radiated near field is very high. The relative error between the models is equal or lower than 3.2% at a plane 13λ from the array, and it decreases as the near field is computed further away from the array. Then, the faster model is employed in a general direct layout optimization procedure to shape the electromagnetic near field for application in an indoor femtocell to provide coverage with constant power in a private office. Results show that a magnitude ripple better than 1.5 dB can be achieved in an enlarged coverage area covering the whole n257 band of the 5G NR, corresponding to a 10.7% relative bandwidth.

Abstract:Near-field focusing characteristics of transmitarray antennas are investigated. The design procedure is summarized and a Ku-band focused transmitarray antenna is presented where the elements are aperture-coupled patches interconnected with stripline delays. The focusing performance of the transmitarray is compared with classic far-field designs. It is shown that a near-field focused reflectarray can be a good candidate for applications requiring high microwave power.
Near-Field Wideband Beamforming for Extremely Large Antenna Arrays

Abstract:The natural integration of extremely large antenna arrays (ELAAs) and terahertz (THz) communications can potentially achieve Tbps data rates in 6G networks. However, due to the extremely large array aperture and wide bandwidth, a new phenomenon called "near-field beam split" emerges. This phenomenon causes beams at different frequencies to focus on distinct physical locations, leading to a significant gain loss of beamforming. To address this challenging problem, we first harness a piecewise-far-field channel model to approximate the complicated near-field wideband channel. In this model, the entire large array is partitioned into several small sub-arrays. While the wireless channel's phase discrepancy across the entire array is modeled as near-field spherical, the phase discrepancy within each sub-array is approximated as far-field planar. Built on this approximation, a phase-delay focusing (PDF) method employing delay phase precoding (DPP) architecture is proposed. Our PDF method could compensate for the intra-array far-field phase discrepancy and the inter-array near-field phase discrepancy via the joint control of phase shifters and time delayers, respectively. Theoretical and numerical results are provided to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed PDF method in mitigating the near-field beam split effect.Finally, we define and derive a novel metric termed the "effective Rayleigh distance" by the evaluation of beamforming gain loss. Compared to classical Rayleigh distance, the effective Rayleigh distance is more accurate in determining the near-field range for practical communications.

A Miniature Non-Uniform Conformal Antenna Array Using Fast Synthesis for Wide-Scan UAV Application

Abstract:To overcome the limited payload of lightweight vehicles such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and the aerodynamic constraints on the onboard radar, a compact nonuniform conformal array is proposed in order to achieve a wide beamscanning range and to reduce the sidelobes of the planar array. The non-uniform array consists of 7x4 elements where the inner two rows follow a geometric sequence while the outer two rows follow an arithmetic sequence along the x axis. The element spacing along the y axis is gradient from the center as well. This geometry not only provides more degrees of freedom to optimize the array radiation, but also reduces the computation cost when synthesizing the excitation and the configuration of the array for a specific beam pattern. As field cancellation may happen due to the convex and concave features of the non-canonical UAV surface, a fast and low-cost in-house code to calculate the radiation pattern of a large scale conformal array for an arbitrary surface and element pattern is employed to optimize the array structure. As a proof of concept, the proposed array with a total volume of 142x93x40 mm3 is implemented at ISM band (5.8 GHz) using a miniature widebeam single-layer patch antenna with a dimension of 0.12lambdax0.12lambdax0.025lambda. By using the beamforming technique, an active onboard system is measured, which achieves the maximum gain of 21.8 dBi and a scanning range of >50deg and -28deg~28deg with a small scan loss of 2.2 and 0.5 dB in elevation and azimuth, respectively. Therefore, our design has high potential for wireless communication and sensing on UAV.

Abstract:State‐of‐the‐art conformal array pattern synthesis techniques typically suffer from a significant computational burden. This article builds upon the auxiliary array pattern synthesis technique, allowing the technique to work on elliptical contours. This deterministic method is both computationally efficient and capable of handling complex design cases with additional design constraints. In order to highlight the versatility and applicability, the method has been applied to an elliptical arc array comprised of Rampart antennas and an elliptical ring array using dipole elements. The results have been validated through full‐wave electromagnetic simulations, as well as physical measurements. Both arrays presented show good agreement with the proposed synthesis technique. Highlighting the ability to satisfy additional design constraints, such as enforcing a minimal element spacing or having a controlled beamformer‐network complexity.

Far- and Near-Field Channel Measurements and Characterization in the Terahertz Band Using a Virtual Antenna Array

Abstract:Extremely large-scale antenna array (ELAA) technologies consisting of ultra-massive multiple-input-multiple-output (UM-MIMO) or reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), are emerging to meet the demand of wireless systems in sixth-generation and beyond communications for enhanced coverage and extreme data rates up to Terabits per second. For ELAA operating at Terahertz (THz) frequencies, the Rayleigh distance expands, and users are likely to be located in both far-field (FF) and near-field (NF) regions. On one hand, new features like NF propagation and spatial non-stationarity need to be characterized. On the other hand, the transition of properties near the FF and NF boundary is worth exploring. In this paper, a complete experimental analysis of far- and near-field channel characteristics using a THz virtual antenna array is provided based on measurement of the multi-input-single-output channel with the virtual uniform planar array (UPA) structure of at most 4096 elements. In particular, non-linear phase change is observed in the NF, and the Rayleigh criterion regarding the maximum phase error is verified. Then, a new cross-field path loss model is proposed, which characterizes the power change at antenna elements in the UPA and is compatible with both FF and NF cases.

Abstract:Wireless communication systems have almost exclusively operated in the far-field of antennas and antenna arrays, which is conventionally characterized by having propagation distances beyond the Fraunhofer distance. This is natural since the Fraunhofer distance is normally only a few wavelengths. With the advent of active arrays and passive reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) that are physically large, it is plausible that the transmitter or receiver is located in between the Fraunhofer distance of the individual array/surface elements and the Fraunhofer distance of the entire array. An RIS then can be configured to reflect the incident waveform towards a point in the radiative near-field of the surface, resulting in a beam with finite depth, or as a conventional angular beam with infinity focus, which only results in amplification in the far-field. To understand when these different options are viable, an accurate characterization of the near-field behaviors is necessary. In this paper, we revisit the motivation and approximations behind the Fraunhofer distance and show that it is not the right metric for determining when near-field focusing is possible. We obtain the distance range where finite-depth beamforming is possible and the distance where the beamforming gain tapers off.

Near-Field Beamfocusing with Polarized Antennas

Abstract:One of the most relevant challenges in future 6G wireless networks is how to support a massive spatial multiplexing of a large number of user terminals. Recently, extremely large antenna arrays (ELAAs), also referred to as extra-large MIMO (XL-MIMO), have emerged as an potential enabler of this type of spatially multiplexed transmission. These massive configurations substantially increase the number of available spatial degrees of freedom (transmission modes) while also enabling to spatially focus the transmitted energy into a very small region, thanks to the properties of near-field propagation and the large number of transmitters. This work explores whether multiplexing of multiple orthogonal polarizations can enhance the system performance in the near-field. We concentrate on a simple scenario consisting of a Uniform Linear Array (ULA) and a single antenna element user equipment (UE). We demonstrate that the number of spatial degrees of freedom can be as large as 3 in the near-field of a Line of Sight (LoS) channel when both transmitter and receiver employ three orthogonal linear polarizations. In the far-field, however, the maximum number of spatial degrees of freedom tends to be only 2, due to the fact that the equivalent MIMO channel becomes rank deficient. We provide an analytical approximation to the achievable rate, which allows us to derive approximations to the optimal antenna spacing and array size that maximize the achievable rate

Abstract:A near-field planar array of wideband dual polarized antennas for plane-wave synthesis has been investigated. The paper presents a PWG with a concentric ring array of 84 Vivaldi antennas which can work at 0.6GHz-3GHz. The constraint least square (CLS) algorithm is used to optimize the weight coefficients of the array elements, which effectively reduce the influence of system uncertainty on quiet zone (QZ) ripple. To reduce the system cost and complexity, the array elements in each concentric ring form a sub-array and the elements of the same sub-array adopt a passive beam forming network. The simulation and initial test results of a circular QZ with a diameter of 600 mm are given. The results demonstrate the feasibility of our design.

Abstract:Sixth generation (6G) wireless networks are envisioned to include aspects of energy footprint reduction (sustainability), besides those of network capacity and connectivity, at the design stage. This paradigm change requires radically new physical layer technologies. Notably, the integration of large-aperture arrays and the transmission over high frequency bands, such as the sub-terahertz spectrum, are two promising options. In many communication scenarios of practical interest, the use of large antenna arrays in the sub-terahertz frequency range often results in short-range transmission distances that are characterized by line-of-sight channels, in which pairs of transmitters and receivers are located in the (radiating) near field of one another. These features make the traditional designs, based on the far-field approximation, for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems sub-optimal in terms of spatial multiplexing gains. To overcome these limitations, new designs for MIMO systems are required, which account for the spherical wavefront that characterizes the electromagnetic waves in the near field, in order to ensure the highest spatial multiplexing gain without increasing the power expenditure. In this paper, we introduce an analytical framework for optimizing the deployment of antenna arrays in line-of-sight channels, which can be applied to paraxial and non-paraxial network deployments. In the paraxial setting, we devise a simpler analytical framework, which, compared to those available in the literature, provides explicit information about the impact of key design parameters. In the non-paraxial setting, we introduce a novel analytical framework that allows us to identify a set of sufficient conditions to be fulfilled for achieving the highest spatial multiplexing gain. The proposed designs are validated with numerical simulations.

Abstract:Millimeter-wave technology has been widely used in near range targets imaging scenarios, such as mechanical scanning and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) array imaging. Emerging scanning array regimes increase the need for fast-speed and high-quality imaging techniques, which, however, are often subject to specific array positions. Moreover, the relationship between array positions and the imaging performance is not clear, which leads to no uniform standard for array design. In this paper, a series of array configurations are designed to explore the impact of different array positions on the cross-range imaging performance. Meanwhile, a novel fast fully focused imaging algorithm with wavenumber domain properties is presented, which is not constrained by the positions of the transmitters and receivers. Simulation and experimental results show that, compared with a conventional algorithm, the proposed algorithm has a faster imaging speed under the same imagining quality. This study provides a feasible method for fast fully focused imaging in the case of location-constrained MIMO arrays, or partially damaged transceivers.

Towards Bridging the Gap between Near and Far-Field Characterizations of the Wireless Channel

Abstract:The "near-field" propagation modeling of wireless channels is necessary to support sixth-generation (6G) technologies, such as intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), that are enabled by large aperture antennas and higher frequency carriers. As the conventional far-field model proves inadequate in this context, there is a pressing need to explore and bridge the gap between near and far-field propagation models. Although far-field models are simple and provide computationally efficient solutions for many practical applications, near-field models provide the most accurate representation of wireless channels. This paper builds upon the foundations of electromagnetic wave propagation theory to derive near and far-field models as approximations of the Green's function (Maxwell's equations). We characterize the near and far-field models both theoretically and with the help of simulations in a line-of-sight (LOS)-only scenario. In particular, for two key applications in multiantenna systems, namely, beamforming and multiple-access, we showcase the advantages of using the near-field model over the far-field, and present a novel scheduling scheme for multiple-access in the near-field regime. Our findings offer insights into the challenge of incorporating near-field models in practical wireless systems, fostering enhanced performance in future communication technologies.

Sparse Array Enabled Near-Field Communications: Beam Pattern Analysis and Hybrid Beamforming Design

Abstract:Extremely large-scale array (XL-array) has emerged as a promising technology to enable near-field communications for achieving enhanced spectrum efficiency and spatial resolution, by drastically increasing the number of antennas. However, this also inevitably incurs higher hardware and energy cost, which may not be affordable in future wireless systems. To address this issue, we propose in this paper to exploit two types of sparse arrays (SAs) for enabling near-field communications. Specifically, we first consider the linear sparse array (LSA) and characterize its near-field beam pattern. It is shown that despite the achieved beam-focusing gain, the LSA introduces several undesired grating-lobes, which have comparable beam power with the main-lobe and are focused on specific regions. An efficient hybrid beamforming design is then proposed for the LSA to deal with the potential strong inter-user interference (IUI). Next, we consider another form of SA, called extended coprime array (ECA), which is composed of two LSA subarrays with different (coprime) inter-antenna spacing. By characterizing the ECA near-field beam pattern, we show that compared with the LSA with the same array sparsity, the ECA can greatly suppress the beam power of near-field grating-lobes thanks to the offset effect of the two subarrays, albeit with a larger number of grating-lobes. This thus motivates us to propose a customized two-phase hybrid beamforming design for the ECA. Finally, numerical results are presented to demonstrate the rate performance gain of the proposed two SAs over the conventional uniform linear array (ULA).

Abstract:Inspired by the recent progress of metasurfaces, a novel wideband and high-efficiency electronically reconfigurable transmitarray (TA) is presented that can enable two-dimensional (2-D) beam steering and multiple beam mode switching in a digital manner. The proposed unit cell consists of a reconfigurable anisotropic metallic resonator, which locates between a pair of orthogonally oriented subwavelength metal gratings. One-bit phase quantization is obtained by controlling the ON or OFF state of two positive-intrinsic-negative (p-i-n) diodes integrated on the anisotropic metallic resonator layer. To choke the radio frequency (RF) signal effectively, a bias layer is connected by the metallic via hole to the center of the resonator, where the electric field is minimal. The simulated results show that the proposed unit cell can achieve a low insertion loss of 1 dB from 9.3 to 10.9 GHz for two phase states. Then, the radiation performance of a 10 $ imes,,10$ element array fed by a pyramidal horn antenna is theoretically calculated, simulated, and measured. The measured maximum gain is 19.1 dBi at 10.0 GHz with an aperture efficiency of 25.8% and a 3 dB gain bandwidth of 15.9%. The measured results demonstrate the 2-D beam scanning capability within the 50° range.

Abstract:A novel Huygens' transmit-array is proposed based on a coupled-resonator approach where two identical elliptical metallic patches with an elliptical hole separated by a dielectric substrate has been used to demonstrate millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) beam-forming for linear polarization. The proposed structure is simple and compatible with standard Printed Circuit Board (PCB) processes and utilizes a single dielectric substrate only. It is shown that by engineering the geometrical dimensions of the resonator, its electric (even-mode) and magnetic (odd-mode) resonances are excited in a balanced manner to achieve zero back-scattering in a large bandwidth. This operation principle of the proposed Huygens' cell is explained in details using both an insightful equivalent circuit model, as well as full-wave eigenmode analysis. Next, the proposed Huygens' cell is placed on top of a high gain 2D slot-array antenna, in its near-field, to engineer its aperture field distribution, where the resulting Huygens' transmit-array acts as a broadband phase plate. Several transmit-array prototypes designed around the 60 GHz frequency band are demonstrated and experimentally characterized in both their near and far-fields, to achieve difference pattern generation, beam expansion and beam steering as application examples, in addition to a uniform surface demonstrating its low-loss performance. Further discussions related to the unit cell size vs frequency bandwidth trade-offs and future extension to handling circular polarization are finally provided.

Abstract:In this paper, a 24-element microstrip antenna array with three-dimensional near-field pattern shaping capability for microwave hyperthermia is presented. The antenna array operating at 2.45 GHz is designed based on the weighted constrained method of the maximum power transmission efficiency (WCMMPTE). By setting proper constraints for the electric field distribution of several selected points within the target area, the three-dimensional (3D) shape of the electric field can be characterized, meanwhile ensuring that the power is maximally concentrated in this area. Moreover, the shape, size, and spatial location of the three-dimensional area are all adjustable according to the selection of those specific points, making the array quickly adaptable for different actual requirements. The electric field distribution of the preset 3D shape can be focused at center or off-center with optimized excitations fed into the array. The measured electric field distribution shows that the transmitting array antenna is able to achieve a preset 3D shape of the electric field distribution as well as a preset offset position in the desired direction, agreeing very well with the simulations.
