Abstract:Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, have come in a great diversity of several applications such as military, construction, image and video mapping, medical, search and rescue, parcel delivery, hidden area exploration, oil rigs and power line monitoring, precision farming, wireless communication and aerial surveillance. The drone industry has been getting significant attention as a model of manufacturing, service and delivery convergence, introducing synergy with the coexistence of different emerging domains. UAVs offer implicit peculiarities such as increased airborne time and payload capabilities, swift mobility, and access to remote and disaster areas. Despite these potential features, including extensive variety of usage, high maneuverability, and cost-efficiency, drones are still limited in terms of battery endurance, flight autonomy and constrained flight time to perform persistent missions. Other critical concerns are battery endurance and the weight of drones, which must be kept low. Intuitively it is not suggested to load them with heavy batteries. This study highlights the importance of drones, goals and functionality problems. In this review, a comprehensive study on UAVs, swarms, types, classification, charging, and standardization is presented. In particular, UAV applications, challenges, and security issues are explored in the light of recent research studies and development. Finally, this review identifies the research gap and presents future research directions regarding UAVs.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones have found applications in various fields including military operations, construction, parcel delivery, mapping, medical, search and rescue missions, exploration of hidden areas, monitoring power lines and oil rigs, precision farming, aerial surveillance, and wireless communication. Due to their modular flexibility and programmability, drone technologies have become a strategic industrial/commercial sector that has gained significant attention as it redefines and combines different emerging domains, such as: service and delivery convergence, lean manufacturing, environmental monitoring and security. The use of swarms of interconnected UAV systems has gained popularity in providing innovative approaches to tasks requiring wide-area multiple collaborative sensors. However, despite advances in maneuverability, user interface, and cost-effectiveness, drones still face limitations in flight autonomy due to restricted flight time for continuous missions. Battery endurance, drone weight, and payload are critical development vectors. This review highlights the importance of drones, their future development priorities and functionality. Specifically, it focuses on UAV classification, swarms, and charging. Moreover, it explores UAV applications, challenges, and security issues based on recent research and development. Additionally, the study delves into anti-drone technology that can assist countries in controlling and ensuring the safe utilization of drones.
Design and Experiment for Realization of Laser Wireless Power Transmission for Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Abstract:Currently various types of aircraft booming and maturing, however, their long-time navigational capability should be improved urgently. This paper aims at studying laser power beaming, which includes the technology of high-efficient photoelectric conversion and APT( acquiring, pointing and tracking) technology, to provide power for flying UAV( unmanned aerial vehicles) and improve their flight endurance.The experiment of testing different types of solar cells under various conditions has been done to choose the solar cell which has the highest photoelectric conversion rate and find its most sensitive wavelength. In addition, the charge management module has been chose on the base of the characteristics of lithium batteries. Besides, a laser APT system was designed and set up, at the same time FSM ( Fast Scan Mirror) control program and digital image processing program were used to control the system. The success of the indoor experiment of scan-tracking and charging for the moving UAV model via laser proves that this system is workable. And in this experiment, the photoelectric conversion rate of the whole system is up to 17.55%.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have advanced and are now employed in a variety of industries, including aerial photography, the military, and transportation. Due to its low battery life, charging it can be difficult. A good UAV solution has been thought of as wireless charging. In this research, we suggested an inductively coupled wireless power transmission system (WPT) and examined the inductive coupling’s power efficiency. A portable energy receiving device positioned on the base of the UAV and a charging station with an induction coil array were both included in the WPT. Additionally, the WPT equivalent circuit was used to examine power efficiency, and a prototype model of the battery coupled with a quadcopter for testing power efficiency was developed. The results onboard the charging circuit design contributed with polarity modulation and safety charging the battery pack, with very light components that considerably decrease the size and weight as much as possible. The charging power conversion efficiency has achieved 83.76% at the maximum.

Abstract:Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, have gained widespread interest in civilian and military applications, which has led to the development of novel UAVs that can perform various operations. UAVs are aircraft that can fly without the need of a human pilot onboard, meaning they can fly either autonomously or be remotely piloted. They can be equipped with multiple sensors, including cameras, inertial measurement units (IMUs), LiDAR, and GPS, to collect and transmit data in real time. Due to the demand for UAVs in various applications such as precision agriculture, search and rescue, wireless communications, and surveillance, several types of UAVs have been invented with different specifications for their size, weight, range and endurance, engine type, and configuration. Because of this variety, the design process and analysis are based on the type of UAV, with the availability of several control techniques that could be used to improve the flight of the UAV in order to avoid obstacles and potential collisions, as well as find the shortest path to save the battery life with the support of optimization techniques. However, UAVs face several challenges in order to fly smoothly, including collision avoidance, battery life, and intruders. This review paper presents UAVs’ classification, control applications, and future directions in industry and research interest. For the design process, fabrication, and analysis, various control approaches are discussed in detail. Furthermore, the challenges for UAVs, including battery charging, collision avoidance, and security, are also presented and discussed.

Abstract:The electric unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are rapidly growing due to their abilities to perform some difficult or dangerous tasks as well as many public services including real-time monitoring, wireless coverage, search and rescue, wildlife surveys, and precision agriculture. However, the electrochemical power supply system of UAV is a critical issue in terms of its energy/power densities and lifetime for service endurance. In this paper, the current power supply systems used in UAVs are comprehensively reviewed and analyzed on the existing power configurations and the energy management systems. It is identified that a single type of electrochemical power source is not enough to support a UAV to achieve a long-haul flight; hence, a hybrid power system architecture is necessary. To make use of the advantages of each type of power source to increase the endurance and achieve good performance of the UAVs, the hybrid systems containing two or three types of power sources (fuel cell, battery, solar cell, and supercapacitor,) have to be developed. In this regard, the selection of an appropriate hybrid power structure with the optimized energy management system is critical for the efficient operation of a UAV. It is found that the data-driven models with artificial intelligence (AI) are promising in intelligent energy management. This paper can provide insights and guidelines for future research and development into the design and fabrication of the advanced UAV power systems.

Abstract:The working scope and working time of small size unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are limited because of the limited battery capacity. In this work, inspired by aerial refueling for aircrafts, we propose a wireless power transmission (WPT) scheme by categorizing the UAVs into charging UAV (CUAV) and mission UAV (MUAV) for charging UAVs without interrupting the mission. In the proposed aerial refueling scheme, mission UAVs (MUAV) can be recharged by charging UAVs on the fly and operate in a perpetual manner. The feasibility of aerially wireless charging for small UAVs is firstly discussed and evaluated. Then we consider a practical application scenario of multiple MUAVs for collecting data from several points of interest, where the MUAVs are recharged by CUAVs. Accordingly, the issue of scheduling the flying path and charging process of each CUAV to minimize the mission time arises. Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based algorithms for scheduling both single and multiple CUAVs are proposed and deployed. Extensive simulation evaluations demonstrate that, by applying the proposed aerial refueling scheme, CUAVs can explore and optimize the scheduling strategies, thereby improving the system performance in terms of mission completion and charging efficiency.

Abstract:A major challenge to wide application of small size unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is the limited working time. For recharging UAVs, ground-station based schemes had been proposed, for which contact charging by magnetic coupling and contactless charging by laser beam can be used. However, UAVs have to interrupt ongoing missions and cost extra time and energy on recharging. In this work, with the aim of charging UAVs without interrupting the mission, we propose the novel concept of charging UAVs aerially via wireless power transmission (WPT). In this case, the mission UAVs (MUAVs) can be recharged by the charging UAV (CUAV) while on the fly. Firstly, the feasibility of aerially wireless charging for small UAVs is verified. Then we consider the practical application of multiple MUAVs for collecting data from several points of interest (PoIs), where the MUAVs will be recharged by the CUAV. Accordingly, the issue of scheduling the CUAV’s flying path and charging process to minimize the mission time arises. To this end, deep reinforcement learning based algorithms for scheduling CUAV recharging MUAVs is proposed. The CUAV explores and optimizes the scheduling strategies, thereby improving the working efficiency. Extensive evaluations and comparisons show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can help facilitate cost-effective and flexible service provisioning in future smart cities. Nevertheless, UAV applications generally suffer severe flight time limitations due to constrained onboard battery capacity, causing a necessity of frequent battery recharging or replacement when performing persistent missions. Utilizing wireless mobile chargers, such as vehicles with wireless charging equipment for on-demand self-recharging has been envisioned as a promising solution to address this issue. In this article, we present a comprehensive study of \underline{v}ehicle-assisted \underline{w}ireless rechargeable \underline{U}AV \underline{n}etworks (VWUNs) to promote on-demand, secure, and efficient UAV recharging services. Specifically, we first discuss the opportunities and challenges of deploying VWUNs and review state-of-the-art solutions in this field. We then propose a secure and privacy-preserving VWUN framework for UAVs and ground vehicles based on differential privacy (DP). Within this framework, an online double auction mechanism is developed for optimal charging scheduling, and a two-phase DP algorithm is devised to preserve the sensitive bidding and energy trading information of participants. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework can effectively enhance charging efficiency and security. Finally, we outline promising directions for future research in this emerging field.

Abstract:Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have been widely used in the military and civil fields. However, the battery power is a key factor that restricts the operation range of the UAV. Using wireless power transfer (WPT) technology to power UAVs can improve the endurance of UAVs and enhance their maneuverability and flexibility. In this paper, the WPT technology is divided into three types: near-field WPT technology, far-field WPT technology and solar-powered UAV. The developments, challenges and prospects of these three types of WPT technologies used to power UAVs are summarized. For each type of WPT technology, the basic working principles are first introduced. The development of each type of WPT technology, as well as the challenges and application prospects in UAV charging, is introduced. The related works consist of academic and industry research, ranging from prototypes to commercial systems. Finally, three types of WPT technology used in UAV charging are compared and discussed, and the advantages and disadvantages of each type of WPT technology are shown. The related research showed that using WPT technology to power the UAV is a promising way to enhance the endurance of the UAV.

Dynamics of Laser-Charged UAVs: A Battery Perspective

Abstract:In this article, we aim to sustain unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based missions for longer periods of times through different techniques. First, we consider on-the-mission UAV recharging by a low-power laser source (below 1 kW). In order to achieve the maximal energy gain from the low-power laser source, we propose an operational compromise, which consists of the UAV resting over buildings with cleared line of sight to the laser source. Second, to provide a precise energy consumption/harvesting estimation at the UAV, we investigate the latter's dynamics in a mission environment. Indeed, we study the UAV's battery dynamics by leveraging the electrical models for motors and battery. Subsequently, using these models, the path planning problem in a particular Internet-of-Things-based usecase is revisited from the battery perspective. The objective is to extend the UAV's operation time using both laser-charging and accurate battery level estimation. Through a graph theory approach, the problem is solved optimally, and compared to benchmark trajectory approaches. Numerical results demonstrate the efficiency of this novel battery perspective for all path planning approaches. In contrast, we found that the energy perspective is very conservative and does not exploit optimally the available energy resources. Nevertheless, we propose a simple adjustment method to correct the energy perspective, by carefully evaluating the energy as a function of the UAV motion regimes. Finally, the impact of several parameters, such as turbulence and distance to charging source, is studied.

Abstract:In recent years, electric unmanned areal vehicles (UAVs) are gaining popularity due to their capabilities in civil and military applications. The rationale is that UAVs can do more complex and risky tasks while maintaining mobility, safety, and cheap cost. UAVs are generally used for inspection and monitoring, search and rescue operation, delivery, precision agriculture, hobbyist applications, and many more. Due to a broad spectrum of applications, UAVs of various sizes and weights have evolved. UAVs have developed with the hybrid architecture of power supply incorporating batteries, fuel cells, solar photovoltaic systems, and supercapacitors for extended endurance and improved performance. The electric propulsion system is the central part of UAVs, which generates thrust to control and hover the UAVs in the air. The propulsion system includes an electric motor, electronic speed controller, power sources, and an energy management system for efficient operation. This paper presents an extensive and critical evaluation of state of the art on classifications, components of the electric propulsion system, the control strategy of electric motor, hybridization of power sources, and energy management system to identify research gaps and give insights exhortations for future research.

Charging Techniques for UAV-assisted Data Collection: Is Laser Power Beaming the Answer?

Abstract:As Covid-19 has increased the need for connectivity around the world, researchers are targeting new technologies that could improve coverage and connect the unconnected in order to make progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In this context, drones are seen as one of the key features of 6G wireless networks that could extend the coverage of previous wireless network generations. That said, limited on-board energy seems to be the main drawback that hinders the use of drones for wireless coverage. Therefore, different wireless and wired charging techniques, such as laser beaming, charging stations, and tether stations are proposed. In this paper, we analyze and compare these different charging techniques by performing extensive simulations for the scenario of drone-assisted data collection from ground-based Internet of Things (IoT) devices. We analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each charging technique, and finally show that laser-powered drones strongly compete with, and outperform in some scenarios other charging techniques.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles have been becoming widely used tools along with the developing progresses of robotic, control and energy techniques. As a convenient carrier of payloads and apparatuses for specific missions, the replenishment of battery is significantly important for the using reliability and durability. To overcome the restrictive issue of conventional battery charging dependent on cables, the wireless electricity transmission based on electromagnetic coupling is investigated in this work. The non-contacted charging may enable more powerful facilities of unmanned aerial vehicles, and may further open up new application fields of drone scenarios.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless power transfer (WPT) has recently emerged as a promising technique to provide sustainable energy supply for widely distributed low-power ground devices (GDs) in large-scale wireless networks. Compared with the energy transmitters (ETs) in conventional WPT systems which are deployed at fixed locations, UAV-mounted aerial ETs can fly flexibly in the three-dimensional (3D) space to charge nearby GDs more efficiently. This paper provides a tutorial overview on UAV-enabled WPT and its appealing applications, in particular focusing on how to exploit UAVs' controllable mobility via their 3D trajectory design to maximize the amounts of energy transferred to all GDs in a wireless network with fairness. First, we consider the single-UAV-enabled WPT scenario with one UAV wirelessly charging multiple GDs at known locations. To solve the energy maximization problem in this case, we present a general trajectory design framework consisting of three innovative approaches to optimize the UAV trajectory, which are multi-location hovering, successive-hover-and-fly, and time-quantization-based optimization, respectively. Next, we consider the multi-UAV-enabled WPT scenario where multiple UAVs cooperatively charge many GDs in a large area. Building upon the single-UAV trajectory design, we propose two efficient schemes to jointly optimize multiple UAVs' trajectories, based on the principles of UAV swarming and GD clustering, respectively. Furthermore, we consider two important extensions of UAV-enabled WPT, namely UAV-enabled wireless powered communication networks (WPCN) and UAV-enabled wireless powered mobile edge computing (MEC).

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be regarded as one of the most emerging technologies. Compared with piloted aerial vehicles, UAVs qualify for higher safety and lower cost, and they are more suitable for dangerous missions. Recently, fuel cell (FC) UAVs have obtained more and more attention due to their relatively higher energy density. However, their propulsion system still needs to be further improved to meet different requirements of performing difficult tasks. This article aims to give a comprehensive review of the key technologies of FC UAVs. First, various architectures of the propulsion system and corresponding advantages and disadvantages are introduced. Then, three kinds of management strategies for FC UAVs are reviewed. Next, some special applications and considered design procedures are summarized. Compared with other review articles, this article tries to cover more aspects of FC UAVs. Since these aspects have a tight relationship with each other, giving a comprehensive review can be more beneficial to us to understand the state-of-the-art development of propulsion systems for FC UAVs. The conclusions show that advanced propulsion architectures, efficient online energy management strategies, and professional design procedures are still in urgent demand in the commercial process of FC UAVs.

Abstract:Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising charging technology for battery-limited sensors. In this paper, we study the use of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as a charger for WPT. Unlike the previous works, our study takes into account the power consumption of the UAV (power consumption during hovering and flight), the charging process from a base station (BS) to the UAV and the conversion loss of the energy harvester. Both one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) WPT systems are considered. The sum-energy received by all sensors is maximized to find the optimal strategy for UAV deployment. Two different charging schemes are proposed. Numerical results show that the sum-energy received by all sensors is determined by sensors' topology, the flight speed of the UAV and the transmit power. They also show that, when the BS charging process and the UAV power consumption are considered in the optimization, the optimal location of the UAV in the 1D and 2D WPT systems is closer to the BS than in the previous works that ignore these two practical factors.

Abstract:The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will be crucial in the next generation of wireless communications infrastructure. When compared to traditional ground-based solutions, it is expected that their use in a variety of communication-based applications will increase coverage and spectrum efficiency. In this paper, we provide a detailed review of all relevant research works as follows. This paper presents types of UAVs (e.g., wireless coverage, military, agriculture, medical applications, environment, and climate, and delivery and transportation), characteristics of UAVs (e.g., node density, altering system topology, node mobility, radio broadcasting mode, frequency band, localization, and power consumption and network lifetime), the application of UAVs (e.g., Multi-UAV cooperation, UAV-to-VANET collaborations, and UAV-to-ground tasks). Additionally, this paper reviews the routing protocols of UAVs (e.g., topology-based, position-based, heterogeneous, delay-tolerant networks (DTNs), swarm-Based, and cluster-based) and simulation tools (e.g., OMNeT++, AVENS, MATLAB, NS3, SUMO, and OPNET). The design and development of any new methods for UAVs may use this work as a guide and reference.

In this context, the deployment of UAVs is considered a key solution for seamless connectivity and reliable coverage. That being said, it is important to underline that although UAVs are characterized by their high mobility and their ability to establish line-of-sight (LOS) links, their use is still impeded by several factors such as weather conditions, their limited computing power, and, most importantly, their limited energy. In this work, we are aiming for the novel technology that enables indefinite wireless power transfer for UAVs using laser beams. We propose a novel UAV deployment strategy, based on which we analyze the overall performance of the system in terms of wireless coverage. To this end, we use tractable tools from stochastic geometry to model the complex communication system. We analyze the user's connectivity profile under different laser charging capabilities and in different type of environments. We show a decrease in the coverage probability by more than 12% in moderate-to-strong turbulence conditions compared to low turbulence conditions. We also show how the connection rate to the aerial network significantly decreases in favor of the terrestrial network for short laser charging ranges. We conclude that laser-powered drones are considered interesting alternatives when placed in LOS with users, in low-to-moderate optical turbulence, and at reasonable ranges from the charging stations.
