Abstract:Investigation of finite amplitude standing waves generated by boundary driving in the stepped acoustic resonator has been carried out both theoretically and experimentally to derive an appropriate tool to design resonators that have characteristics suitable for specific applications such as a microphone calibration system with a higher-pressure level. Initially, a modified resonance condition is proposed, which is deduced from the transfer matrix method and the characteristics of the standing wave resonator. The predictions of the resonance frequencies in a cylindrical resonator are in excellent agreement with those obtained by analytic formula in previous studies. Then, the modified resonance condition is applied to calculate the resonance frequencies of a stepped resonator. The boundary driving is provided by a piston at the open end. The resonant response in the cylindrical and stepped resonator, including the pressure amplitudes, the pressure waveform and the distribution of pressure amplitude along the axis, is calculated numerically by the finite volume method, which is a preliminary prediction of finite amplitude standing waves in the resonators. The calculated results of the stepped resonator are verified in the experiment, in which a stepped acoustic resonator is connected to a loudspeaker functioning as the piston.

Abstract:The D5 aeroacoustic wind tunnel at Beihang University is a newly commissioned small-scale closedcircuit wind tunnel with low turbulence intensity and low background noise. The wind tunnel is built to study both aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance of aircraft components or scaled models. The wind tunnel has two types of test sections, the closed type test section is used for aerodynamic tests while the open type test section is mainly used for aeroacoustic experiments. Both types of test section are 1 m in height and 1 m in width, and the maximum wind velocity in the test section can be up to 80 mis. An anechoic chamber is built surrounding the test section to provide the non-reflecting condition. This paper provides an overview of design criteria and performance of the small-scale wind tunnel. The layout of the wind tunnel and some critical design treatments to improve aerodynamic and acoustic performance are discussed in detail. Some experiments are conducted to verify the performance of D5 wind tunnel, results confirm that the turbulence intensity is less than 0.08% in the core of test section and the background noise is comparable with other aeroacoustic wind tunnels. A scaled simplified nose landing gear model is also measured as a benchmark test, results reveal that noise radiated from the model is adequately higher than the background noise for a wide frequency range and remarkably consistent with other results from literatures. Abstract:Acoustic testing is crucial in the aero-engine design process, providing valuable information about the sound field in terms of acoustic modes. The conventional use of a uniform sampling array limits the achievable resolution for a given number of sensors, necessitating the use of a large number of sensors to achieve high-resolution estimates. This limitation may be overcome using a non-uniform sensing array. In this work, we propose an optimal microphone selection scheme to determine which microphone placements that are preferable given the typically available a priori knowledge of the relevant acoustic modes. Using a weighted A-optimality criterion, we formulate the sensor selection problem as the one minimizing the expected variance of the resulting parameter estimates. Using both numerical and measured data sets, we illustrate how the proposed scheme allows for improved performance as compared to random and uniform sensor placement schemes.

Abstract:According to the need of aerodynamic noise experimental investigation in anechoic wind tunnel, the microphone array measuring and testing technique is introduced. Based on the characteristic of anechoic wind tunnel, the correction method of shear layer in anechoic wind tunnel is used, which improves the measuring precision of microphone array. Numerical simulation and test in 0.55 m×0.4 m anechoic wind are conducted, which validate source identification capability of microphone array system and data-processing method. The result indicates microphone array measuring and testing technique in this paper can be used for the testing in anechoic wind. The aerodynamic noise test for NACA23018 airfoil is put in practice. The test result shows that the trailing edge (TE) noise is observed clearly, and the aerodynamic noise characteristic of NACA23018 airfoil is obtained at different attack angles.

Abstract:A low-speed closed-loop wind tunnel with an open-jet test section having a maximum windspeed of 60 m/s is being modified for future aero-acoustic testing. The wind tunnel is new to Carleton University as of 2021 and no acoustic characterization tests have been completed until recently. The objective of this research is to acoustically characterize the wind tunnel before and stepwise through its acoustic modifications. Multiple tests have been made using 1⁄4-inch microphones at different locations inside the plenum to record the existing out-of-flow background noise. The first planned wind tunnel modification is a height extension to the current plenum with dimensions 0.74 × 1.8 × 1.3 m (H × L × W) to increase the observer distance for the microphones. Once the plenum volume is increased, acoustic treatment will be applied to the interior of the plenum to create a hemi-anechoic measurement environment. An in-flow microphone mount was designed and manufactured with computer-controlled vertical traversing; it will be installed after the plenum modifications are complete.

Abstract:In this paper, small-sized acoustic horns, the sensitivity enhancement package for the MEMS-based thermal acoustic particle velocity sensor, have been designed and optimized. Four kinds of acoustic horns, including tube horn, double cone horn, double paradox horn, and exponential horn, were analyzed through numerical calculation. Considering both the amplification factor and effective length of amplification zone, a small-sized double cone horn with middle tube is designed and further optimized. A three-wire thermal acoustic particle velocity sensor was fabricated and packaged in the 3D printed double cone tube (DCT) horn. Experiment results show that an amplification factor of 6.63 at 600 Hz and 6.93 at 1 kHz was achieved. A good 8-shape directivity pattern was also obtained for the optimized DCT horn with the lateral inhibition ratio of 50.3 dB. No additional noise was introduced, demonstrating the DCT horn’s potential in improving the sensitivity of acoustic particle velocity sensors.

Abstract:<p>The aeroacoustic wind tunnel at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) is a new facility commissioned for studies of sound generation mechanisms, noise reduction methods, and aerodynamic designs. The wind tunnel is operated at low Mach numbers and low-to-moderate Reynolds numbers. This study details the design methodology for wind-tunnel major components. The validation tests of the flow quality are performed by pitot-tube and hot-wire measurements, and those of the aeroacoustic performance are conducted by far-field microphone measurements. The aerodynamic and acoustic performance is compared with established data, and the results show that the wind tunnel has a high quality of flow field and low background noise levels. A benchmark test of airfoil tonal noise is conducted by microphone and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The observed tones exhibit consistent features with existing experimental observations and the mechanisms are explained with the help of flow field near the trailing edge.</p>

Abstract:Magnetic sensors actuated by bulk acoustic wave (BAW) have attracted extensive attention due to the fact of their high sensitivity, GHz-level high frequency, and small size. Different from previous studies, suppression of energy loss and improvement in energy conversion efficiency of the BAW magnetoelectric (ME) sensor were systematically considered during the device design in this work. Finite element analysis models of material (magnetic composite), structure (ME heterostructure), and device (BAW ME magnetic sensor) were established and analyzed in COMSOL software. Additionally, the magnetic composite was prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering, and its soft magnetism was characterized by magnetic hysteresis loop and surface roughness. The research results demonstrate that after inserting four layers of 5 nm Al2O3 films, a performance of 86.7% eddy current loss suppression rate, a less than 1.1% magnetostriction degradation rate, and better soft magnetism were achieved in 600 nm FeGaB. Furthermore, compared with other structures, the two-layer piezomagnetic/piezoelectric heterostructure had a better ME coupling performance. Eventually, the design of the BAW ME magnetic sensor was optimized by the resonance-enhanced ME coupling to match the resonance frequency between the magnetic composite and the BAW resonator. When a 54,500 A/m direct current bias magnetic field was applied, the sensor worked at the first-order resonance frequency and showed good performance. Its linearity was better than 1.30%, the sensitivity was as high as 2.33 μmV/A, and the measurement range covered 0–5000 A/m.

Abstract:Acoustic imaging is an indispensable experimental aid in the design of silent aircraft. In this work, acoustic imaging is performed in a classical closed-section wind tunnel that has been extensively modified using specifically designed liners on the walls of the test section. The details of the associated acoustic modification and the aeroacoustic imaging method are introduced in this paper. The acoustic test performance is carefully evaluated by examining background noise reductions and acoustic beamforming results. The experimental outcomes suggest that the proposed acoustic modification could suppress background noise by 5 dB at 40-80 m/s test flow speeds. The beamforming results clearly identify the dominant airframe noise sources at landing gears and high-lift devices. The experimental results agree fairly well with the preceding computational and empirical predictions. The proposed acoustic imaging technique has been shown to be an effective experimental technique in identifying airframe noise sources. In addition, the acoustic treatments developed in this paper could be considered in extending the aeroacoustic capabilities of existing closed-section wind tunnels. Abstract:With the continuous progress of aerospace, military technology, and marine development, the MEMS resonance pressure sensor puts forward the requirements of not only a wide range but also high sensitivity. However, traditional resonators are hardly compatible with both. In response, we propose a new sensor structure. By arranging the resonant beam and the sensitive diaphragm vertically in space, the new structure improves the rigidity of the diaphragm without changing the thickness of the diaphragm and achieves the purpose of increasing the range without affecting the sensitivity. To find the optimal structural parameters for the sensor sensitivity and range, and to prevent the effects of modal disturbances, we propose a multi-objective optimization design scheme based on the BP and NSGA-II algorithms. The optimization of the structure parameters not only improved the sensitivity but also increased the interference frequency to solve the issue of mode interference. The optimized structure achieves a sensitivity and range of 4.23 Hz/kPa and 1–10 MPa, respectively. Its linear influence factor is 38.07, significantly higher than that of most resonant pressure sensors. The structural and algorithmic optimizations proposed in this paper provide a new method for designing resonant pressure sensors compatible with a wide range and high sensitivity.

Abstract:In this work, a wireless and passive pressure sensor based on film bulk acoustic wave resonator (FBAR) has been proposed and investigated experimentally. Finite element analysis (FEA) was performed to determine the vibration mechanism and modes of the film in the device. The FBAR device was fabricated using traditional MEMS process and the pressure sensor was obtained by sealing the back-etched cavity of the device on a glass substrate. The network analyzer was used to characterize the wireless and passive performance of the sensor. The results showed that the pressure variation of the surroundings can be detected by measuring the frequency shift of the sensor wirelessly. The sensor has a fast response time of about 1 s, and a pressure sensitivity of 1.5 ppm/kPa with an excellent linearity of 0.997 in the pressure range from 17 kPa to 200 kPa at the temperature of 25 degrees C. Moreover, the sensor also possesses an excellent linearity frequency response with temperature change, demonstrated its potential for wireless passive sensing applications.
Enhancing Aeroacoustic Wind Tunnel Studies through Massive Channel Upscaling with MEMS Microphones

Abstract:This paper presents a large 6~m x 3~m aperture 7200 MEMS microphone array. The array is designed so that sub-arrays with optimized point spread functions can be used for beamforming and thus, enable the research of source directivity in wind tunnel facilities. The total array consists of modular 800 microphone panels, each consisting of four unique PCB board designs. This modular architecture allows for the time-synchronized measurement of an arbitrary number of panels and thus, aperture size and total number of sensors. The panels can be installed without a gap so that the array's microphone pattern avoids high sidelobes in the point spread function. The array's capabilities are evaluated on a 1:9.5 airframe half model in an open wind tunnel at DNW-NWB. The total source emission is quantified and the directivity is evaluated with beamforming. Additional far-field microphones are employed to validate the results.

Abstract:The biosensor based on surface acoustic wave is of great significance for the application of biological clinical detection, but the sensitivity and specificity of surface acoustic wave biosensor still need to be improved. In this article, the structure of surface acoustic wave biosensor and interdigital transducer is designed by studying the theoretical model of surface acoustic wave biosensor. Then the amplitude–frequency response of the device is studied. Later, the simulation model of surface acoustic wave biosensor structure is established, and the performance of surface acoustic wave device is numerically calculated. Meanwhile, the relationship between the applied excitation signal and the resonant frequency is considered, and the performance of the surface wave propagation and attenuation characteristics are analyzed. In addition, the influence of the material of the piezoelectric substrate and the structure of the interdigitated electrode on the surface acoustic wave propagation are studied. The response potential curve and the total displacement of the particle vibration are analyzed, and the structure of the surface acoustic wave device is optimized.

Abstract:Sound source localization is always of great value in many engineering applications. In recent years, studies on orientation mechanisms of the auditory systems and research of bionic structures of subminiature creatures, especially of the parasitoid fly Ormia Ochracea which has a remarkable ability to detect the direction of the incident sound stimulus despite of its tiny body size, may provide preferable solutions for the miniaturization of acoustic localization structure. In this paper, the bionic acoustic sensing device are set up and taken as the research object to find feasible orientation mechanisms, and the dynamics of the bionic mechanical coupled diaphragms are analyzed. These works provide the basis for the manufacture of experimental acoustic sensing device. In the last part of this paper, experiments on bionic acoustic sensing device are conducted after the test system has been established. The measured data and the analyses based on the measured data demonstrate that the modeling methods and theoretical study in this paper are correct.

Abstract:We have developed a photoacoustic (PA) sensor using a low-power, continuous- wave laser and a kHz-range microphone. The sensor is simple, flexible, cost-effective, and compatible with commercial optical microscopes. The sensor enables noncontact PA measurements through air, whereas most current existing PA techniques require an acoustic coupling liquid for detection. The PA sensor has three main components: one is the chamber that holds the sample, the second is a resonator column used to amplify the weak PA signals generated within the sample chamber, and the third is a microphone at the end of the resonator column to detect the amplified signals. The chamber size was designed to be 8 mm × 3 mm as the thermal diffusion length and viscous-thermal damping of air at room pressure and temperature are 2 and 1 mm, respectively. We numerically and experimentally examined the effect of the resonator column size on the frequency response of the PA sensor. The quality factor decreased significantly when the sample chamber size was reduced from 4 mm × 3 mm to 2 mm × 3 mm due to thermos-viscous damping of the air. The quality factor decreased by 27%, demonstrating the need for optimal design for the sample chamber and resonator column size. The system exhibited noise equivalent molecular sensitivity (NEM) per unit bandwidth (NEM / √ Δf) of ∼19,966 Hz - 1/2 or 33 × 10 - 21 mol or 33 zeptomol, which is an improvement of 2.2 times compared to the previous system design. This PA sensor has the potential for noncontact high-resolution PA imaging of materials without the need for coupling fluids. .

Miniature Ferroelectret Microphone Design and Performance Evaluation Using Laser Excitation

Abstract:Miniature microphones suitable for measurements of ultrasonic wave field scans in air are expensive or lack sensitivity or do not cover the range beyond 100 kHz. It is essential that they are too large for such fields measurements. The use of a ferroelectret (FE) film is proposed to construct a miniature, needle-style 0.5-mm-diameter sensitive element ultrasonic microphone. FE has an acoustic impedance much closer to that of air compared with other alternatives and is low cost and easy to process. The performance of the microphone was evaluated by measuring the sensitivity area map, directivity, ac response, and calibrating the absolute sensitivity. Another novel contribution here is that the sensitivity map was obtained by scanning the focused beam of a laser diode over the microphone surface, producing thermoelastic ultrasound excitation. The electroacoustic response of the microphone served as a sensitivity indicator at a scan spot. Micrometer scale granularity of the FE sensitivity was revealed in the sensitivity map images. It was also demonstrated that the relative ac response of the microphone can be obtained using pulsed laser beam thermoelastic excitation of the whole microphone surface with a laser diode. The absolute sensitivity calibration was done using the hybrid three-transducer reciprocity technique. A large aperture, air coupled transducer beam was focused onto the microphone surface, using the parabolic off-axis mirror. This measurement validated the laser ac response measurements. The FE microphone performance was compared with biaxially stretched polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) microphone of the same construction.

Broadening efficient sound absorption bandwidth of spatial bending acoustic metasurfaces with multi-parameter variation

Abstract:Due to limitations in the space for the installation of noise reduction structures in some engineering application fields, broadband efficient noise reduction has always been a key issue in academic and engineering fields. Faced with this issue, in this work, a deep-subwavelength acoustic metasurface with embedded necks and bending channels is proposed. Firstly, theoretical models for the sound absorption coefficient of traditional Helmholtz resonators(THRs), embedded Helmholtz resonators(EHRs), and spatial bending acoustic metasurfaces (SBAMs) with a thickness of 12 mm were established using the thermal-viscous model, end acoustic radiation correction theory, and transfer matrix method, which prove that the SBAM unit has deep-subwavelength characteristics. Subsequently, adopting theoretical models and the complex frequency plane method, the SBAM unit with a side length of 50 mm and a thickness of 12 mm was designed, which exhibited perfect absorption at 541 Hz. The perfect absorption mechanism was elucidated through simulations. Theoretical and simulation models were used to analyze the regulation law of different geometric parameters on the acoustic performance for ultra-thin SBAM units. The results indicate that by accurately tuning multiple geometric parameters, ultrathin and perfect-absorption SBAM units with a thickness of 12 mm in the broadband range of 463–672 Hz can be achieved. Furthermore, it was experimentally studied how the equivalent length L influences the sound absorption performance of SBAM units, and the correctness of the theoretical and simulation results was verified. These results will provide a theoretical reference and engineering application for broadening the low-frequency noise reduction frequency band in compact spaces, improving the spatial utilization of sound absorption structures, and achieving broadband noise control at low and medium frequencies.

Abstract:Improving measurement accuracy is the core issue with surface acoustic wave (SAW) micro-force sensors. An electrode transducer can stimulate not only the SAW but also the bulk acoustic wave (BAW). A portion of the BAW can be picked up by the receiving transducer, leading to an unwanted or spurious signal. This can harm the device's frequency response characteristics, thereby potentially reducing the precision of the micro-force sensor's measurements. This paper examines the influence of anisotropy on wave propagation, and it also performs a phase-matching analysis between interdigital transducers (IDTs) and bulk waves. Two solutions are shown to reduce the influence of BAW for SAW micro sensors, which are arranged with acoustic absorbers at the ends of the substrate and in grooving in the piezoelectric substrate. Three different types of sensors were manufactured, and the test results showed that the sidelobes of the SAW micro-force sensor could be effectively inhibited (3.32 dB), thereby enhancing the sensitivity and performance of sensor detection. The SAW micro-force sensor manufactured using the new process was tested and the following results were obtained: the center frequency was 59.83 MHz, the fractional bandwidth was 1.33%, the range was 0–1000 mN, the linearity was 1.02%, the hysteresis was 0.59%, the repeatability was 1.11%, and the accuracy was 1.34%.

Abstract:Low noise design and testing methods for aeroengine are indispensable for civil aviation industry with the public environmental convern growing and the stringent regulations established. A novel array testing approach is proposed to reconstruct spinning modal fan noise amplitude from scattered sound wave measurements outside the jet flow downstream to an unflanged duct. The proposed approach relies on the forward propagation model based on the Wiener-Hopf method. The key contribution of this work is the development of the inverse acoustic scattering methods using a non-classical beamforming and a compressive sensing strategies. The performance of the proposed strategies are demonstrated with various numerical simulations, which show that the deconvolution method is more generic while the compressive sensing method is more efficient. The reconstruction results from both methods are comparable in terms of accuracy and dynamic range. Overall, the proposed testing approach should be able to extend the current duct acoustic array testing capability and help the design and evaluation of low-noise ducted fan system.
