Abstract:Mental disorders of the elderly population in China deserve attention. Social health is significantly associated with depression. This study aimed to evaluate the rate of depressive symptoms and to test the relationships between social health and depressive symptoms among a large sample of community-dwelling elderly adults. We conducted a cross-sectional study among community-dwelling adults aged 60 years or above in Zhejiang Province, China. Face-to-face interviews were used to complete a structured questionnaire for all participants. We used the Social Health Scale for the Elderly (SHSE) to evaluate social health status and used the short form of the Geriatric Depression Scale to evaluate depressive symptoms. Multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between social health status and depressive symptoms. Of the total of 3757 participants included, 1887 (50.23%) were female, and the mean±standard deviation (SD) age was (70.0±8.3) years. The rate of depressive symptoms was 25.92%. The social health score was higher in non-depressed participants than in depressed participants (raw score 50.7 vs. 48.3, P < 0.001). Participants with “moderate” or “good” social health had a significantly lower risk of depressive symptoms than those with “poor” social health (odds ratio (OR)=0.55, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.46-0.66 for moderate social health; OR=0.45, 95% CI: 0.35-0.60 for good social health). The association between social health and depressive symptoms was consistent across several subgroups. Social health is significantly inversely associated with depressive symptoms. The SHSE may serve as an efficient screener to identify those elderly adults with social health deficits, but systematic assessment to guide intervention merits further investigation.

Abstract:Background: A growing body of literature suggests that early life circumstances can influence mental health throughout the lifespan. However, how these early life circumstances cumulatively contribute to depression in old age is not completely understood. The aim of this study was to examine the associations of eight factors with depression among community-dwelling older adults. Methods: Data were from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. We included 8,239 community-dwelling individuals who were >= 60 years, completed the life history questionnaire, and had assessment of depression. An early life disadvantage index was established using risk factors that were significantly associated with depression. Logistic regression was used to examine the association of each early life risk factor and the index with depression. Results: Of 8239 individuals included, 2,055 (24.9%) had depression. In bivariate analysis, each of eight early life risk factors was significantly associated with depression. Except for maternal and paternal education, all risk factors persisted to be associated with depression after multivariable adjustment. In the multivariable-adjusted model, a one-point higher in the early life disadvantage index (range: 0-6) was associated with a 45% (95% CI: 37%, 53%) higher odds of depression. Limitations: Depressive symptoms were measured in our study only by the CES-D scale. Some early life experi-ences might not be fully reliable due to recall bias. Conclusion: There was a strong association between early life environments and depressive symptoms among Chinese community-dwelling older adults. Adverse early life circumstances could contribute cumulatively to depression in old age.
Prevalence and Related Influencing Factors of Depressive Symptoms among Empty-Nest Elderly in Shanxi, China.

Abstract:Background: In China, aging has become a serious social problem, and the number of empty-nest elderly is on the rise. The aim of this study is to clarify the prevalence of depressive symptoms among empty-nest elderly in Shanxi province and evaluate the effects of sociodemographic factors and health-promoting lifestyles so as to provide a scientific reference for preventing and intervening their depression. Methods: A cross-sectional study, which used a multi-stage random cluster sampling way, was conducted among 4901 empty-nest elderly in Shanxi. An independent t-test and a chi square test were used to compare the sociodemographic factors, depression scores, and health-promoting lifestyle scores of the empty-nest elderly. Multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze the potential influencing factors for depression. Results: The prevalence of depressive symptoms in the population was 64.2%. Among all participants 1,776 (36.2%) had mild depression, 1,236 (25.2%) had moderate depression, and 135 (2.8%) had severe depression. The health-promoting lifestyle of the empty nesters in this study was at the medium level (2.51 +/- 0.47). Gender, education level, old-age provision model, exercise frequency, chronic disease, relationships with children, self-care ability, and health-promoting lifestyles were found to be influencing factors of depression and all variables had different effects on different degrees of depression. Limitations: This was a cross-sectional study, so the results cannot establish causal relationships among the study variables. Conclusions: Depression was prevalent among the empty-nest elderly in Shanxi. Maintaining good interpersonal relationships, developing extensive interests, and maintaining healthy lifestyles including good nutrition habits and regular exercises can reduce the incidence of depression among empty nesters.
Association between socioeconomic welfare and depression among older adults: Evidence from the China health and Retirement Longitudinal Study

Abstract:<p>This study aims to examine the association between province-level socioeconomic welfare factors and depression symptoms among older adults in China. Province-level socioeconomic characteristics were merged with microdata for respondents over 65 years from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) Wave 4 (<em>N</em> = 6657). Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to extract three socioeconomic welfare factors constructed from 14 province-level variables. A Bayesian mixed-effects logistic model was applied to measure the association between the three socioeconomic welfare factors and depression symptoms while controlling for socio-demographic variables. The PCA showed that economic welfare, medical resource welfare, and social service welfare together explained 72.2 percent of the total variance of the 14 province-level variables. It was found that increasing economic welfare was significantly associated with a lower probability of depression symptoms (OR = 0.806, 95%CI: [0.674, 0.967]), while medical facilities were associated with a higher probability of depression symptoms (OR = 1.181, 95%CI: [1.029, 1.354]) among Chinese older adults. Uncertainty existed as to whether having access to social welfare (OR = 0.941, 95%CI: [0.835, 1.060]) was associated with prevalence of depression. Thus, improved socioeconomic welfare systems for older adults (which possibly require an increase in spending) are necessary to contribute further to reduced depression risk in China. Policymakers should also improve the utilization of medical resources to mitigate the incidence of depression among the elderly in China.</p>

Abstract:Depression amongst the elderly population is a worldwide public health problem, especially in China. Affected by the urban–rural dual structure, depressive symptoms of the elderly in urban and rural areas are significantly different. In order to compare depressive symptoms and its influencing factors among the elderly in urban and rural areas, we used the data from the fourth wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). A total of 7690 participants at age 60 or older were included in this study. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the prevalence estimate of depression between urban and rural elderly (χ2 = 10.9.76, p < 0.001). The prevalence of depression among rural elderly was significantly higher than that of urban elderly (OR-unadjusted = 1.88, 95% CI: 1.67 to 2.12). After adjusting for gender, age, marital status, education level, minorities, religious belief, self-reported health, duration of sleep, life satisfaction, chronic disease, social activities and having income or not, the prevalence of depression in rural elderly is 1.52 times (OR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.32 to 1.76) than that of urban elderly. Gender, education level, self-reported health, duration of sleep, chronic diseases were associated with depression in both urban and rural areas. In addition, social activities were connected with depression in urban areas, while minorities, marital status and having income or not were influencing factors of depression among the rural elderly. The interaction analysis showed that the interaction between marital status, social activities and urban and rural sources was statistically significant (divorced: coefficient was 1.567, p < 0.05; social activities: coefficient was 0.340, p 0.05). Thus, it is necessary to propose targeted and precise intervention strategies to prevent depression after accurately identifying the factors’ effects.

Methods: Data were collected from the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). The study sample included 5101 Chinese adults aged ≥ 65 years. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Binary logistic regression analyses were used to explore the relationship between social activities and depressive symptoms. Results: The prevalence rate of depressive symptoms in rural elderly is 1.37 times higher than that in urban elderly. The proportion of elderly persons participating in a social activity less than once monthly, or never having participated in social activities is higher in rural areas than in urban areas. The results from the logistic regression model analysis show that among rural elderly, visiting others' homes or interacting with friends at least once a month or once a week is positively associated with depressive symptoms. Playing cards or mahjong at least once a week or almost daily is negatively associated with depressive symptoms. Participating in organized social activities once a month is negatively associated with depressive symptoms. None of these five activities significantly correlate with depressive symptoms among urban older adults. Conclusion: This study explored the differences in depressive symptoms among elderly populations in urban and rural China, as well as the impact of social activity participation on depressive symptoms. This study underscores the necessity of targeted social interventions in rural areas to enhance social participation among the elderly and reduce depressive symptoms. Abstract:Abstract Background In the past decades, China’s rapid economic growth has been accompanied by rapid changes in lifestyle and an increasing prevalence of mental disorders. This study explored the changes and factors associated with depression among the elderly population of China from 2011 to 2018. Method Data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The total sample size consists of 21,484 individuals aged ≥60 years, and the sample sizes in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2018 were 5081, 4853, 5207, 6343, respectively. Depressive symptoms were measured by the 10-item Short-Form developed by the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression. Result We found that the tendency in depression rate of the Chinese elderly from 2011 (36.8%) to 2018 (44.5%). The results showed poor health (OR = 3.553), ADL damage (OR = 2.010), multiple chronic diseases (OR = 1.287), and western (OR = 1.777) are risk factors for depression. Conclusion The rate of depression of the elderly people in China has risen dramatically. Therefore, additional steps to prevent, treat and care for the affected population are needed, Mental health prevention and treatment strategies should be incorporated into China’s public health policies in a timely manner to mitigate the serious economic burden caused by the increase of depression.

Abstract:Population ageing is becoming a global issue, especially in developing countries like China. Social engagement is suggested to be effective to protect elderly from depression in multiple studies. This study aims to examine the possible moderating effect of contextual resources, specifically the effects of having a pension and the local economic environment, on the relationship between social engagement and geriatric depression. A sample of 8226 participants from the data of the Chinese Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2011 is examined using two-level random coefficient linear models. Results indicates that social engagement, specifically, paid employment and volunteering are negatively associated with symptoms of depression among elderly. Having a pension and the local economic environment have opposite moderating effects on the relationship between paid employment and geriatric depression. However, such moderating effects do not exist in the relationship between volunteering and geriatric depression. This study suggests that active social engagement is an important protective factor for the psychological well-being of elderly Chinese, but the mechanisms of how paid employment and volunteering associate with symptoms of depression among elders have varied under different contextual resources. Our findings are expected to provide valuable insight into policies and social services concerning active ageing.

Abstract:Background: Depressive symptoms are a serious public health problem that affects the mental health of older adults. However, current knowledge of the association between ADL disability and physical dysfunction and depressive symptoms in Chinese adults is insufficient. We intend to analyze the association between physical function, ADL, and depressive symptoms in older Chinese adults. Methods: The data obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (2015 and 2018) (CHARLS). This includes 3,431 in 2015 and 3,258 in 2018 over the age of 60. Comparing 2015 and 2018 data, multivariate logistic regression models were used to explore the relationship between physical function, ADL, and depressive symptoms in urban and rural older adults, adjusting for sociodemographic factors associated with depression in older adults. Results: The prevalence of depressive symptoms among older adults in China was 33.8 percent in 2015 and 50.6 percent in 2018. In baseline data from 2015 and 2018, residence, gender, marital status, drinking, physical function, ADL, and self-rated health were all found to be significantly associated with depressive symptoms in older adults. The differences in physical function, ADL and depressive symptoms among older adults in 2015 and 2018 were further analyzed based on urban and rural stratification. Both physical dysfunction and ADL disability were significantly associated with depressive symptoms in rural older adults in 2015 and 2018. And in urban areas, ADL was found to be significantly associated with depressive symptoms in urban older adults. Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that ADL disability was significantly associated with depressive symptoms among older adults in both urban and rural areas. Physical dysfunction was only significant in rural areas with depressive symptoms. The alpha level was instead set to 0.05 for all statistical tests. Conclusion: Rural, female, 60–70 years of age, primary school or below, married, non-smoking, non-drinking, physical dysfunction, ADL disability and self-rated poor health make-up a higher proportion of depressed older adults. ADL disability and physical dysfunction were more likely to be associated with depressive symptoms in rural Chinese older adults. Therefore, the physical and mental health of rural elderly should be of concern. The rural older adults should receive additional support from the government and society.

Abstract:We examine the prevalence of depressive symptoms among the mid-aged and elderly in China and examine relationships between depression and current SES factors such as gender, age, education and income (per capita expenditures). In addition, we explore associations of depressive symptoms with measures of early childhood health, recent family deaths and current chronic health conditions. We use data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) national baseline, fielded in 2011/12, which contains the ten question version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale (CES-D) for 17,343 respondents aged 45 and older. We fill a major gap by using the CHARLS data to explore the general patterns of depression and risk factors among the Chinese elderly nationwide, which has never been possible before. We find that depressive symptoms are significantly associated with own education and per capita expenditure, and the associations are robust to the inclusion of highly disaggregated community fixed effects and to the addition of several other risk factors. Factors such as good general health during childhood are negatively associated with later depression. There exist strong gender differences, with females having higher depression scores. Being a recent widow or widower is associated with more depressive symptoms, as is having a series of chronic health problems, notably having moderate or severe pain, disability or problems with measures of physical functioning. Adding the chronic health problems to the specification greatly reduces the SES associations with depressive symptoms, suggesting that part of the pathways behind these associations are through these chronic health factors.

Abstract:Background: With the acceleration of population aging, depressive symptoms in older adults have become an urgent global public health issue. It is critical to understand how to prevent and intervene the epidemic of depressive symptoms. Several studies have reported the prevalence of depressive symptoms among older adults in urban and rural China, but there is a lack of cross-sectional studies on the prevalence of depressive symptoms among older adults in Anhui Province after the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Between December 2023 and February 2024, we used convenience sampling to randomly recruit 1,175 older people over 60 years old in Anhui Province, China. The PHQ-9 depressive symptom scale, frailty scale, and social frailty scale were used in the study. Logistic regression was used to analyze the association between frailty, social frailty, family health and depressive symptoms in older adults. Result: Of the 1,175 participants, 406 (34.6%) had depressive symptoms. Binary logistic regression results showed that Status of body pain ( p < 0.001), Number of hospitalizations in the past year ( p < 0.001), Status of social frailty ( p < 0.001) and Status of frailty ( p < 0.001) were highly correlated with depressive symptoms in older adults. While family health (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.26–1.11, p = 0.092) was a protective factor for depressive symptoms in older adults. Conclusion: The prevalence of depressive symptoms among older adults is high in Anhui Province, China. Frailty, social frailty, and poor family health are associated with higher prevalence of depressive symptoms in older adults. Public health departments should pay more attention to the construction of mental health protection in the three environmental contexts of individual, family and society to promote healthy aging.

Abstract:Objectives: To explore prevalence of depression and its influencing factors in middle-aged and elderly patients with chronic diseases. Method: Data were extracted from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Tracking Survey (CHARLS) for 6,704 middle-aged and elderly patients ≥45 years with chronic diseases. The influencing variables were selected based on LASSO-logistic regression model, and a nomogram was further drawn to visualize regression results. Results: Comorbidity between chronic diseases and depression symptoms were detected in 3058 individuals (45.6%). Female, rural, lower education, poor, insomnia, multiple chronic disease, and functional impairment were associated with a higher proportion of depression. Meanwhile, family interaction, intergenerational financial support, social activity intensity, and satisfaction with life can protect against depression. Conclusion: Depressive symptoms are common in Chinese older adults with chronic diseases. They need regular assessment and intervention, especially those with multiple diseases, female, rural, alone, impaired, poor sleep, or poor economy. These high-risk elders also need family, medical, and social support and care.

Abstract:Objective To survey the prevalence of depressive symptoms and related risk factors among elderly patients in primary care settings in Shanghai.Methods Total 1 332 patients aged 60 or above,who were visited Shanghai Shimen Erlu Community Health Service center from April to June of 2011,were included in the survey,including 554 males and 778 females with an average age of 72 ± 11.A screening questionnaire based on the patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was applied in the survey,the sociodemographic and health-related variables were analyzed,and social support scale was evaluated.Results Total 258 (19.6％) patients had depressive symptoms in this study and 13.4％ (176/1 318) of them had minor depression.The average social support score was (33.2 ± 8.9).There were significant differences in subjective support,objective support and usage of support between the depressive and non-depressive patients (t =6.37,3.83,2.72 respectively,P ＜ 0.01).There were 5 variables into logistic regression equation including relationship with spouses,life satisfaction,percentage of medical costs over total household expenses,outdoor exercise and objective social support.Conclusions Marital disharmony,poor life satisfaction,the burden of medical costs,less exercises and less objective support are the main risk factors associated with depression status of elderly patients in the community.

Abstract:In thalassaemic patients, neurophysiological disturbances have been associated with high serum ferritin levels and desferrioxamine therapy. In the presence of a magnetic field, ferritin, the main iron storage protein, induces a preferential decrease of the T(2) relaxation time. The purpose of this study was to evaluate thalassaemic patients for brain iron deposition by assessing the T(2) relaxation rate (1/T(2)) of the grey matter. 41 thalassaemic patients (age range 8.5-44 years, mean 24 years) and 58 age- and sex-matched controls were included in the study. Current serum ferritin levels were obtained. The 1/T(2) values of the cortex (motor and temporal) (mean 0.0122 ms(-1), SD 0.0004), putamen (mean 0.0137 ms(-1), SD 0.0004) and caudate nucleus (mean 0.0132 ms(-1), SD 0.0003) were higher in patients compared with the controls (mean 0.0110 ms(-1), SD 0.0004; mean 0.0120 ms(-1), SD 0.0005; mean 0.0117 ms(-1), SD 0.0003, respectively) (p<0.001 for all parameters). No statistically significant differences were found in the globus pallidus. No correlation was found between 1/T(2) and serum ferritin. The higher values of 1/T(2) in the cortex, putamen and caudate nucleus of thalassaemic patients probably reflect a higher iron deposition. The lack of differences in 1/T(2) of the globus pallidus might suggest that even in thalassaemic patients iron cannot exceed a saturation level.
Living environment, service quality satisfaction and depression among Chinese older adults in elderly caring social organizations

Abstract:Background: Older adults living in elderly caring social organizations (SOs) are prone to suffer from depression. Many studies have found correlations between environmental and quality-of-life factors and depression; however, evidence from elderly caring SOs is rare, particularly in China. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among service recipients in elderly caring SOs in Anhui and Chongqing, China. Data on demographic and health-related characteristics, living environment factors, and service quality satisfaction factors in 2171 older adults were used for analysis. The binary logistic regression model was conducted to estimate the association between living environment and service quality satisfaction factors and depression. Results: Our results indicated that living environment factors in terms of exposure to suitable temperature and humidity (OR = 0.655; 95 % CI: 0.446, 0.963), green coverage >30 % (OR = 0.432; 95 % CI: 0.337, 0.553) were associated with lower odds of developing depression. Also, an opposite relationship was found in the noise factor (OR = 1.985; 95 % CI: 1.395, 2.823). Higher satisfaction with admission and discharge services, dietary services, entertainment services, and psychological support services were also found to be associated with a lower risk of depression. Limitations: A cross-sectional design precluded determining whether living environment, service quality satisfaction, and depression are causally related. Measurement of living environment factors and service quality satisfaction factors needs to be further clarified comprehensively. Conclusions: Enhancing the living environment and the quality of the services provided to seniors in the elderly caring SOs is conducive to the reduction of the likelihood of depression.
The Association between Urbanization and Depression among the Middle-Aged and Elderly: A Longitudinal Study in China

Abstract:Urbanization has been and will continue to be the mainstream trend of global population movement, including China. Depression is the most common mental disorders and the leading factor of disabilities. However, the impacts of urbanization on the depression occurrence are still unclear. This paper analyzed the data from 3 waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) with sample size as 8510 adults representing the middle aged and elderly group in China. Depression was identified and measured by the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10). Urbanization level was measured by population density, GDP per capita and secondary/tertiary industry as percentage to GDP in the China City Statistical Yearbook. The fixed effect regression model was used to explore the association between the changes of urbanization and depression. As result, depression is closely related to the urbanization, protective effects are found for 3 indicators above: The depression prevalence decreases while urbanization level increases (from lowest urbanization level to the highest: P < 0.01). Among the 10 depression symptoms, “Bothered”, “Reduced energy leading to diminished activity” and “Hopelessness” are the most significantly improved with urbanization. The impact of urbanization on residents’ mental health is a long-term, multi-factor interaction. Therefore we need to fully consider all possible influencing factors, and longer follow-up study to verify.
Depression and Elder Abuse and Neglect among a Community-Dwelling Chinese Elderly Population.

Abstract:Our recent survey of an elderly cohort in mainland China suggests that elder abuse and neglect are common. Unfortunately, there is minimal knowledge about the risk factors for elder abuse and neglect among this population. We aimed to examine depression as a risk factor for elder abuse and neglect among Chinese elderly. A cross-sectional study was performed in a major urban medical center in NanJing, China. Depression was assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale and direct questions were asked regarding abuse and neglect experienced by the elderly since the age of 60; 412 patients completed the survey. The mean age of the participants was 70 and 34% were female. Depression was found in 12% of the participants and elder abuse and neglect was found in 35% of the participants. After multiple logistical regression, feeling of dissatisfaction with life (OR, 2.92; 95% CI, 1.51-5.68, p < 0.001), often being bored (OR, 2.91; CI, 1.53-5.55, p < 0.001), often feeling helpless (OR, 2.79; CI, 1.35-5.76, p < 0.001), and feeling worthless (OR, 2.16; CI, 1.10-4.22, p < 0.001) were associated with increased risk of elder abuse and neglect. Multiple logistic regression modeling showed that depression is independently associated with elder abuse and neglect (OR, 3.26; CI, 1.49-7.10, p < 0.003). These findings suggest that depression is a significant risk factor associated with elder abuse and neglect among Chinese elderly.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p><strong>:</strong> In China, an increasing number of people are aging; therefore, attention should be paid to age-related cognitive impairment. With the increasing attention given to geriatric depression in recent years, we focused our investigation on the relationship between depression in the elderly and cognitive decline in a large Chinese community study.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p><strong>:</strong> We screened 4,771 subjects that met the inclusion criteria from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study database. Depressive symptoms and cognitive performance were assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), respectively.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p><strong>:</strong> We found that 4.46% of the elderly have depression and 35.19% have depressive symptoms. Lower education, higher CESD-10 score, increased age, and more negative marital status were associated with poor cognitive performance in the Chinese elderly. CESD-10 is negatively correlated with each MMSE item, including orientation, memory, attention and computation, and language.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Limitations</h3><p><strong>:</strong> It was difficult to draw conclusions about causation since there was no follow-up data, and high CESD-10 scores do not represent the population study finally diagnosed with depression. Finally, it is not clear whether the decline in cognitive function had an impact on participants' understanding of the problems in the CESD-10.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p><strong>:</strong> This study preliminary prompted severe depressive symptoms associated with worse cognitive performance in a Chinese elderly community population.</p>

Abstract:Objective: Disability and social support can impact depressive symptoms of the elderly. Yet, studies infrequently discuss the moderating role of social support when evaluating the association between disability and depressive symptoms. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between disability, social support, and depressive symptoms among the Chinese elderly, and further examine the moderating effect of social support. Materials and methods: Using the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) data set, we finally selected 9,231 Chinese elderly after screening. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10) was used to evaluate depressive symptoms in the elderly. Disability was measured by basic activities of daily living (B-ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (I-ADL). Social support included contact with family and friends, sick care, and money received, measured by five self-reported questions. We used multiple linear regression and moderating model to explore the association between disability, social support, and depressive symptoms. Results: A total of 9,231 patients were included in this study, and approximately 26.75% of the elderly had depressive symptoms. Study found that depressive symptoms were associated with social support (β B − ADL = −0.108, 95% CI: −0.168– −0.047; β I − ADL = −0.098, 95% CI: −0.156– −0.039), β B − ADL (β = 0.296, 95% CI: 0.248−0.343) and I-ADL (β = 0.174, 95% CI: 0.152–0.195). Moreover, the result also showed that social support moderated the effects of B-ADL ( βB-ADL*socialsupport = 0.034, 95% CI: 0.014–0.053, F = 11.57, p = 0.001) and I-ADL ( βI-ADL*socialsupport = 0.025, 95% CI: 0.017–0.033) on depressive symptoms. Conclusions: The study suggests that disability and social support can affect depressive symptoms, and social support moderates the effect of disability on depressive symptoms. Therefore, taking effective measures to reduce the elderly disability rate of disability and increase their social support are necessary condition for realizing mental health.

Abstract:Depression is common among elderly people, but people from various study settings were at different levels of risk for depression. However, most of the existing studies were conducted among community population, and little was known about depression among institutionalized population. In this study, using a national sample, we aimed to compare the prevalence rate of depression and its associated factors between community-dwelling elderly people (CDEP) and elderly medical inpatients (EMI). Data for this study was derived from a national survey of the 2011 Comprehensive Assessment of Elderly Health. The Geriatric Depression Scale was used to assess depression. The results indicated that the prevalence rate of depression among EMI was significantly higher than that in CDEP (18.1% vs 11.6%, P<0.001). Physical health status was found to be the most important factor associated with depression among both groups. This study revealed a high prevalence rate of depression among Chinese elderly people, especially for those medically institutionalized. It's essential to pay more efforts on the training of general practitioners for early screening and identification of depression on the admission of elderly patients and during their hospitalization, and case management of the elderly medical inpatients on assessment and treatment for depression may be beneficial.
