Abstract:AIM: This exploratory mixed methods study aimed to inform future research by investigating if teachers and children from one primary school perceived any changes in children's social, emotional and mental health difficulties following art therapy and if so, what the children perceived as helpful about the sessions. METHODS: The study included 45 children and 10 class teachers within one UK primary school. The researchers analysed routine questionnaires from teachers and a children's evaluation interviews, triangulating these with data from a teacher focus group. RESULTS: The findings show significant and medium effect sizes for positive teacher-rated changes in children's overall stress, conduct, hyperactivity, and procsocial behaviour and a large effect on perceived impact of children's difficulties on their lives. Teacher-rated emotional distress and peer problems showed small changes that did not reach statistical significance. The positive changes were corroborated by the teachers' and children's qualitative reports. Aspects of art therapy which children found particularly helpful were; making and thinking about art; expressing, thinking and learning about thoughts and feelings; and sessions being fun. CONCLUSION: The study highlighted perceived positive changes and no negative changes in children's SEMH difficulties. However, future research is necessary to examine clinical effectiveness.Plain-language summaryIn this article we describe a research study which aimed to explore if teachers and children perceived any changes to children's social, emotional or mental health difficulties after the children attended art therapy within their primary school. We were also interested in learning from the children if they thought anything in particular had been helpful about their art therapy sessions in order to inform future research and the development of this particular approach to art therapy.The art therapists asked the class teachers to fill out a Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaires at the beginning and end of art therapy. The class teachers also attended a focus group so we could learn more about their general observations of the children before and after attending art therapy. The art therapists also interviewed the children to learn if they perceived any changes since coming to art therapy and if so, what in particular they thought had helped bring about these changes.We found that statistical analysis of the questionnaire scores mostly agreed with what the teachers and children said and that there was generally some positive change to the social, emotional and mental health difficulties the children had been experiencing. The teachers also let us know that some of the children still had residual problems. The children emphasised that making and thinking about art along with expressing, thinking and learning about thoughts and feelings had been particularly helpful. It was also important to the children that the sessions were fun.In conclusion, the teachers and children in this primary school perceived art therapy as helpful to the children and that it merits further research in order to develop the approach used by the art therapists and to see if it is effective in larger research studies including more children, schools and art therapists.

Abstract:Background Schools have been increasingly employing dance movement psychotherapists to support children cope with daily worries and stress, express and understand their emotions, develop self-awareness and self-esteem. However, evidence on the impact of dance movement psychotherapy as a tool for prevention of mental health difficulties in childhood remains limited. Methods Sixteen children (aged 7–9) with mild emotional and behavioral difficulties from two primary schools were randomly assigned to a Dance Movement Psychotherapy (DMP) intervention or to a waiting list, within a larger pilot cross-over randomized controlled study which aimed to (a) test whether all elements of study design can work together and run smoothly in a full-scale RCT; and (b) investigate the effectiveness of arts therapies in improving children’s health related quality of life (HRQOL; EQ-5D-Y), wellbeing and life functioning (Child Outcome Rating Scale; CORS), emotional and behavioral difficulties (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire; SDQ), and duration of sleep (Fitbits). The therapeutic process was also evaluated through interviews with children, participant observations, the Children’s Session Rating Scale (CSRS), and ratings of adherence to the therapeutic protocol. Results The findings indicated that DMP led to improvements in children’s life functioning, wellbeing, duration of sleep, emotional and behavioral difficulties, but not in quality of life. The improvements were maintained at the follow-up stages, up to 6 months post-intervention. Interviews with children also suggested positive outcomes, such as self-expression; emotional regulation; mastery and acceptance of emotions; improved self-confidence and self-esteem; reduced stress; and development of positive relationships. However, children would have preferred smaller groups and longer sessions. Conclusion This study indicated that all outcome measures would be suitable for inclusion in a larger randomized controlled trial, though the EQ-5D-Y is not recommended as a stand-alone measure due to its lack of sensitivity and specificity for young participants. The adherence to the therapeutic protocol ratings differed between children and adults, highlighting the need to include children’s voice in future research. Strategies are also proposed of how to conduct randomization of participants in ways that do not hinder the therapeutic process.

Abstract:Background: School-based art therapy aims to facilitate children's personal change and growth through the use of visual arts media, such as drawing, painting, sculpture, clay, or digital art.Aims: To identify and synthesise the types of school-based art therapy interventions, and appraise the effectiveness for children aged 5-12.Methods: Systematic searching through ten major electronic databases, grey literature, and contact with experts in the field.Results: Six completed and two on-going studies were identified. Art therapy was delivered to children with asthma, behavioural disorders, oppositional defiant disorders, separation anxiety disorders, learning disorders, and disruptive behaviours. All interventions were delivered over 7-25 sessions, and lasted 40-60' per session. The sample sizes ranged between 20-109 participants, involving 247 participants in total.Conclusions: Art therapy can be effective in improving children's quality of life; anxiety; self-concept; problem-solving skills, attitudes towards school; emotional and behavioural difficulties. The follow-up findings were also promising; though confirmatory evidence is needed.Implications: The risk of bias was high and unclear, highlighting the importance of following standardised reporting guidelines. Future research needs to focus on the identification of primary outcomes and measures that are tailored to art therapy interventions, and explore the (cost-) effectiveness of shorter versus longer durations of treatment.Plain-language summaryArt therapy is widely used in schools to alleviate and prevent children's emotional difficulties. Abstract:We describe work in progress to conduct a systematic review of research on effects of arts-based programs for mental health in young people. We are at the stage of searching for relevant studies through major databases and screening extant systematic reviews for additional research which meet our inclusion criteria. At this stage, however, concerns have arisen regarding both the quality of existing primary studies and of recently published systematic reviews in this area of arts and health. As a case in point, in this paper we focus on one research report on art therapy with adolescent girls and its inclusion in three systematic reviews. We demonstrate that the reviews fail to undertake a robust critique of the Bazargan and Pakdaman paper and that the paper and reviews are flawed. Drawing on recent criticisms of systematic reviewing, we consider the value of proceeding with our systematic review as initially planned.

Effectiveness of creative arts-based interventions for treating children and adolescents exposed to traumatic events: a systematic review of the quantitative evidence and meta-analysis

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The effect of interventions based on the creative arts for children and adolescents exposed to traumatic events was estimated for measures of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other psychological symptoms.METHOD: Using a pre-registered protocol, relevant journal articles were identified through searches of: PsycInfo; Psychology and Behavioural Sciences Collection; CINAHL and PsycArticles. Data were pooled using a random effects model, and effect estimates were reported as Hedges' g.RESULTS: Pooled effect estimates indicated that arts-based interventions significantly reduced PTSD symptom scores compared to pre-intervention (15 studies, g = -.67, p < .001) and a control group (7 studies, g = -.50, p < .001). Significant reductions were also found for measures of negative mood, but results were mixed for externalizing problems and anxiety.CONCLUSIONS: Despite variations in study quality, intervention approaches and types of trauma experience, the results tentatively suggest that creative arts-based interventions may be effective in reducing symptoms of trauma and negative mood.

Psychobiological responses to choir singing and creative arts activities in children and adolescents with mental disorders: results of a pilot study

Abstract:Background: Children and adolescents living with mental health problems often experience stress and poor mood states, which may influence their quality of life and well-being. Arts interventions may improve mood and well-being and reduce physiological stress in this vulnerable population. Methods: A cohort of patients in child and adolescent psychiatry (N = 42; age range: 12-18 years) participated in one of four arts activities including choir singing (n = 11), textile design (n = 9), drama (n = 16), and clownery (n = 6). They were led by professional artists and delivered through five consecutive 90-min daily afternoon sessions over the course of 1 week. Questionnaires of mood and saliva samples before and after each session served to assess short-term psychobiological changes. In addition, patients reported their quality of life and well-being at the beginning and at the end of the 1‑week program. Results: Results showed that alertness was significantly enhanced after textile design (∆post-pre = 4.08, 95% CI [0.77, 7.39]) and after singing (∆post-pre = 2.20, 95% CI [-0.55, 4.94]). Moreover, mood tended to be positively affected by textile design (∆post-pre = 2.89, 95% CI [-0.39, 6.18]). Quality of life increased significantly after singing (∆post-pre = 5.49, 95% CI [1.05, 9.92]). Arts participation except singing was associated with significant reductions in salivary cortisol (sCort) (textile design ∆post-pre = -0.81 ng/mL, 95% CI [-1.48, -0.14]; drama ∆post-pre = -0.76 ng/mL, 95% CI [-1.28, -0.24]; clownery ∆post-pre = -0.74 ng/mL, 95% CI [-1.47, -0.01]). No significant changes were observed for well-being over the whole program and salivary immunoglobulin A (sIgA) after any of the arts activities. Discussion: These results suggest that arts participation can improve mood state and reduce stress in young people with mental disorders, but there is a need for further studies.
A Systematic Review of Arts-Based Interventions Delivered to Children and Young People in Nature or Outdoor Spaces: Impact on Nature Connectedness, Health and Wellbeing

Abstract:Background The time that children and young people spend in nature and outdoor spaces has decreased significantly over the past 30 years. This was exacerbated with a further 60% decline post-COVID-19. Research demonstrating that natural environments have a positive impact on health and wellbeing has led to prescription of nature-based health interventions and green prescribing, although evidence for its use is predominantly limited to adults. Growing evidence also shows the impact of arts on all aspects of health and wellbeing. However, what has received scant attention in literature is the interconnection between the two: arts and nature. Aims This review synthesizes the literature surrounding the interconnectedness between arts and nature, and their impact on the health and wellbeing of children and young people. Methods Eight major electronic databases were systematically searched, while hand-searching included 20 journals, six books, and contact with experts. The review was conducted using the Cochrane handbook for systematic reviews, PRISMA guidelines and TIDieR template. All stages were conducted independently by two researchers and the protocol was published on PROSPERO (Registration no.: CRD42021286574). Results Although 9,314 records were identified, only 11 records were included as most studies focused either on arts or nature, but not both. Studies were conducted in United Kingdom, United States, Ireland, Australia, and Hong Kong, in a range of spaces such as forests, woodlands, beaches, parks, fields, gardens, and school playgrounds. The review encompasses data from 602 participants in total. Discussion Arts-in-nature offered an inclusive medium to engage all children and young people, especially those who might otherwise remain disinterested about environmental issues and disengaged with educational programs. Further, arts-in-nature provided stimuli to increase nature connectivity, understand environmental issues and explore ways to prevent environmental disasters. This led to higher environmental awareness and pro-environmental behaviors, and potential decrease in eco-anxiety. Conclusion Although the quality of qualitative studies was high, the quality of quantitative studies was low or unclear, thus quantitative evidence is still at its infancy. Implications for research, policy, and practice are discussed, such as methods and activities to strengthen future interventions. Scaling-up existing interventions may lead to wider recognition and inclusion of arts-in-nature in future health guidelines, including green prescribing.

Abstract:Palliative Medicine, Ahead of Print. Background:Children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their families need physical and emotional support to manage the challenges of their lives. There is a lack of synthesised qualitative research about how music therapy is experienced by children, young people and their families supported by paediatric palliative care services.Aim:To systematically identify and synthesise qualitative research on experiences of music therapy in paediatric palliative care from stakeholder perspectives.Design:A Qualitative Evidence Synthesis was conducted using Thematic Synthesis. The review protocol was registered in PROSPERO (registration number: CRD42021251025).Data sources:Searches were conducted with no dates imposed via the electronic databases PsycINFO, MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED and CINAHL in April 2021 and updated in April 2022. Studies were appraised for quality using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tool (CASP).Results:A total of 148 studies were found, 5 studies met the eligibility criteria reporting the experiences of 14 mothers, 24 family members and 4 staff members in paediatric palliative care. There were five overarching themes: emotional and physical reprieve, opportunity for normalised experiences, thriving despite life limited condition, enhance family wellbeing and therapeutic relationship central to outcomes.Conclusion:Music therapy provides unique benefits for this paediatric population particularly in supporting child and family wellbeing. The therapeutic relationship, interpersonal skills of the therapist and experience in paediatric palliative care are perceived as central to these positive outcomes.

Group-based active artistic interventions for adults with primary anxiety and depression: a systematic review

Abstract:Objectives: This systematic review examined the potential benefit of all group-based performing arts interventions for primary anxiety and/or depression. Setting: Scholarly literature from any country or countries globally. Data sources: Three key bibliographic databases, Google Scholar and relevant citation chasing. Primary and secondary outcome measures: Depression and/or anxiety symptom severity, well-being, quality of life, functional communication or social participation. Results: Database searches returned a total of 63 678 records, of which 56 059 remained following dededuplication. From these database searches, a total of 153 records proceeded to full-text screening. These were supplemented by 18 additional unique full-text screening records from Google Scholar searches and citation chasing (12% of total). From a total of 171 records at the full-text screening stage, 12 publications (7%) were eligible for inclusion in this systematic review, each reporting on a separate study. Published from 2004 to 2021, these studies involved a total of 669 participants with anxiety and/or depression from nine countries and covered five broad artistic modalities: dance, music therapy, art therapy, martial arts and theatre. Dance was the most studied artistic modality (five studies), while there were three studies on art therapy, two on music therapy and one each on martial arts and theatre. The evidence was clearest for a benefit of arts therapies on depression and/or anxiety symptoms. Conclusions: This systematic review addresses all group-based active arts interventions in a focused population of primary anxiety and/or depression. The evidence suggests that the arts may be a useful therapeutic medium in this population. However, a substantial limitation of the evidence base is the lack of studies directly comparing different artistic modalities. Moreover, not all artistic modalities were assessed for all outcome domains. Therefore, it is not currently possible to determine which artistic modalities are most beneficial for which specific outcomes.
Online art therapy in elementary schools during COVID-19: results from a randomized cluster pilot and feasibility study and impact on mental health

Abstract:Abstract Background Emerging literature on the current COVID-19 crisis suggests that children may experience increased anxiety and depression as a result of the pandemic. To prevent such school and mental health-related problems, there is a timely need to develop preventive strategies and interventions to address potential negative impacts of COVID-19 on children’s mental health, especially in school settings. Results from previous child clinical research indicate that art-based therapies, including mindfulness-based art therapy, have shown promise to increase children’s well-being and reduce psychological distress. Objective The goal of the present pilot and feasibility study was to compare the impact of an emotion-based directed drawing intervention and a mandala drawing intervention, on mental health in elementary school children ( N = 22), in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Both interventions were group-based and delivered online and remotely. A pilot study using a randomized cluster design was implemented to evaluate and compare both interventions in relation to child anxiety, depression, inattention and hyperactivity symptoms. Results Analyses of covariance revealed a significant effect of the type of drawing intervention on levels of inattention, after controlling for baseline levels. Participants in the emotion-based directed drawing group showed lower inattention scores at post-test, when compared to participants in the mandala group. Post-hoc sensitivity analyses showed significant decreases in pre-to-post scores for levels of hyperactivity for the complete sample. Conclusion Overall, results from this pilot and feasibility study showed that both an emotion-based directed drawing intervention and a mandala drawing intervention may be beneficial to improve mental health in elementary school children, in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic. From a feasibility standpoint, results indicate that the implementation of both interventions online and remotely, through a videoconference platform, is feasible and adequate in school-based settings. Further work incorporating larger sample sizes, longitudinal data and ensuring sufficient statistical power is warranted to evaluate the long-term impact of both interventions on children’s mental health.

Abstract:Purpose – High-maintenance cost is the common issue in building industry due to low service quality of maintenance management in Malaysia. Abstract:Although our research started before the pandemic, it seems that focusing on the social emotional development of our students has become a top priority, considering that, globally, the rates of anxiety among children and teenagers are, in the actual context of the pandemic and war, skyrocketing. One valuable way to promoting positive social emotional development is to implement in schools research-based programs that support students in strengthening their social and emotional competencies. Art therapy is one of the most suitable ways to serve this purpose, for it goes beyond words and gives the students the opportunity to deeper experience and process their emotions. This research used a structured group art therapy program to reduce anxiety and improve empathy and prosocial behaviour in 20 special educational needs students with neuro-psycho-motor deficiencies, aged between 8 and 11 years, who were randomly and equally assigned either to an experimental or a control group. The intervention was performed once weekly for ten weeks. Anxiety, empathy and prosocial behaviour have been measured using specific questionnaires filled out by the students’ caregivers at the beginning and at the end of the program. After ten weeks, the art therapy group showed a significant decrease in anxiety and a significant increase in empathy and prosocial behaviour. These findings suggest that art therapy might be used in an educational context to lower anxiety and to support the positive development of social emotional competencies such as empathy and prosocial behaviour in special educational needs children with neuro-psycho-motor deficiencies.
Arts for the Blues - a new creative psychological therapy for depression: a pilot workshop report

Abstract:Introduction: Research over the last decade has identified both strengths and limitations in the use of routinely prescribed psychological therapies for depression. More recently, a focus on how creative art therapies and 'arts on prescription' are developing a growing recognition of their potential additional therapeutic mechanisms for depression. Aim: In an attempt to develop a new therapeutic intervention for depression, this research aligned both the evidence base surrounding the arts on prescription movement, collating these with client-reported helpful factors and preferences for therapeutic interventions. Methods: We developed a framework for a new pluralistic 'meta-approach' of therapy for depression, based on; an interdisciplinary thematic synthesis of active ingredients, considered specific features implemented in therapy, and client-reported helpful factors considered to be the broad features or experiences in therapy from both talking therapies and creative approaches. This framework contributed to the development of a pilot workshop entitled Arts for the Blues - A New Creative Psychological Therapy for Depression. An outline of, and evaluation from this workshop is presented in this article. Workshop participants were recruited via a voluntary workshop taking place at a North West Higher Education Institution Arts and Health conference ( N = 15). Results: The workshop was evaluated using quantitative measures, with results indicating around a 70% overall satisfaction, followed up with qualitative commentary around areas of good practice and areas for development. These included the positive reflection on the application of creative arts and the multimodal nature of the approach, while others reflected on the potential overwhelming nature of utilising multimodal methods for individuals with depression. Conclusion: Overall feedback from the pilot workshop is discussed in relation to prior research, giving credence to the potential for incorporating arts into therapy.

Abstract:Arts education in schools frequently experiences the pressure of being validated by demonstrating quantitative impact on academic outcomes. The quantitative evidence to date has been characterized by the application of largely correlational designs and frequently applies a narrow focus on instrumental outcomes such as academically relevant competencies. The present review aims to summarize quantitative evidence from quasi-experimental and experimental studies with pre-test post-test designs on the effects of school-based arts education on a broader range of competency outcomes, including intra- and interindividual competencies. A systematic literature search was conducted to identify relevant evaluation studies. Twenty-four articles reporting on 26 evaluation studies were eligible for inclusion, and their results were reviewed in terms of art domains and outcome categories. Whilst there is some evidence of beneficial effects on some competencies, for example of music education on arithmetic abilities, speech segmentation and processing speed, the evidence across arts domains and for different outcomes is limited due to small sample sizes, small number of studies, and a large range of effect sizes. The review highlights that sufficiently powered (quasi-)experimental studies with pre-test post-test designs evaluating arts education are sparse and that the “gold standard” of experimental research comes at the expense of a number of other study characteristics such as sample size, intervention and follow-up length. By summarizing the limitations of the current (quasi-)experimental research, the application of experimental designs is critically assessed and a combination with qualitative methods in mixed-method designs and choice of relevant outcomes discussed.

Implementing creative dance activities for primary school children to improve health and wellbeing: a qualitative study in the North East England

Abstract:Perspectives in Public Health, Ahead of Print. Aims:Evidence suggests that group arts activities with children build resilience and positive mental wellbeing. However, insufficient attention has been paid to how such activities can be implemented in practice across different contexts, particularly in socio-economically disadvantaged areas. Therefore, we explored the implementation of a dance-based intervention in two primary schools situated in an area of high economic deprivation in North East England.Methods:Our study explored Year 1 (age 5–6) and Year 5 (age 9–10) children, their parents, teachers and dance artists' views of a creative dance intervention (South Tees Arts project; STAR) in two schools in North East England, using interviews and focus groups, combined with innovative data capture activities (i.e. movement activities, graffiti walls, songs and Vox Pops).Results:Children felt that STAR contributed positively to their emotional wellbeing and physical health. Teachers noticed improved confidence, engagement, literacy, and social and motor skills and less disruptive behaviour in class. Benefits continued beyond school, with children exercising at home to practice their dance moves. Several implementation barriers were identified ranging from limited time, large classes, dealing with challenging behaviours, the impact of COVID-19, stigma and anxiety. In response to these challenges, several solutions were developed during project delivery, such as artists and children working in pairs and role modelling by teachers and dance artists.Conclusions:We found three underlying mechanisms for successful implementation: (1) constant communication between teachers, dance artists and parents was essential to managing challenging behaviours, building personal relationships with children, and helping parents to get involved and support their children at home. (2) Linking dance activities to the school curriculum (using narratives from existing reading schemes) helped to support skill gaps. (3) A strong ethos of partnership between school, dance and arts providers and researchers ensured the adaptability and flexibility of projects.

Abstract:Abstract A developing evidence base suggests that dramatherapy, a creative form of psychotherapy, is a useful treatment for child and adolescent emotional disorders. However, little is known regarding the therapeutic benefits (“active ingredients”) of this intervention. A systematic search and meta-synthesis of secondary qualitative data reflecting participants’ perceptions of active ingredients of dramatherapy for symptoms of emotional disorders (anxiety, depression and trauma-related stress) was conducted. Six analytical themes emerged from eight studies. Dramatherapy as a learning (1) and social (2) experience and dramatherapy as a positive intervention (3) which supports self-expression (4) and emotion regulation (5) were identified as active ingredients. The skill and professionalism of dramatherapists (6) were also identified. This study is limited as the data available were not collected for the primary purpose of identifying active ingredients, more focused investigations may reveal different findings. In addition, studies contributed unequal amounts of data thus, findings may be skewed. The findings of this synthesis were benchmarked against other interventions commonly offered to children and young people with emotional distress. Three active ingredients (dramatherapy is fun, dramatherapy builds confidence, participants process difficulties through drama) were deemed unique to dramatherapy. Further research could employ mediation analysis to determine therapeutic mechanisms of change of this intervention.

Abstract:The paper presents a practical-applied research which investigates the benefits of art therapy on preschool children; how they can be supported to evolve in a desirable way, from a cognitive, affective and psychomotor perspective. The purpose of our research was the pedagogical investigation of art therapy in the formative influence of preschool children with social and family problems (problems of adaptation to the environment of kindergarten, undesirable behaviors in the group of children, family, but also society). The methods and instruments we used highlithed the projective tests method, observation, the questionnaire, sociometrical methods. We mention that we did not diagnose (psychologically) a child; we didn’t interpret their work as it is usually done with these techniques. Through drawings we identified children with emotional, social integration (children group), communication problems etc., only with the elements of visual language, the colors and space used, details and elements of the environment. By instrumenting – as an independent variable – of an educational program, we tried and we succedeed in the formative influence of children, through artistic education, respectively through curricular materials - drawings - created by preschoolers themselves and used in therapeutic and projective purposes, which helped the children significantly in their efforts of effective social adaptation and integration in the kindergarten.

Diversifying Semantic Entity Search: Independent Component Analysis Approach

Abstract:Structured Web data are increasingly accessed using information retrieval methods and information retrieval increasingly relies on structured background knowledge. As users' searches are often directed towards finding information about entities rather than text documents, a key affordance of semantic search is the ability to retrieve relevant information about entities more precisely by utilizing the rich structured descriptions and background knowledge. Entity search also poses challenges for information retrieval methods. Entity descriptions are often short and conventional search term matching alone can be insufficient. As a consequence, the search engine should be able to increase the recall of the returned results and select a representative set of entities for a user; to diversify search results. This paper presents an approach to diversify entity search by using semantics present and inferred from the initial entity search results. Our approach utilizes ontologies as a source of background knowledge to improve recall of entity retrieval and independent component analysis to detect independent latent components shared by the entities. The search results are then diversified by selecting a representative set of entities based on their membership in the independent components. We demonstrate the performance of our approach through retrieval experiments conducted by using a real-world dataset composed from four entity databases. The results suggest that our approach can significantly improve effectiveness and diversity of entity search.

Abstract:This systematic literature review is a companion to our review of the effectiveness of art therapy with adult clients (Regev & Cohen-Yatziv, 2018) and aims to contribute towards the ongoing discussion in the field of art therapy on the effectiveness of art therapy in a wide range of child-aged clients.For this purpose, four major electronic databases were searched for quantitative articles relating to outcome measures in the field of art therapy with children from 2000 to 2017. A total of 13 articles responding to the inclusion criteria were identified and divided into three levels of evidence (Case-Smith, 2013). The results are organised into five clinical categories: trauma, special education and disabilities, non-specific difficulties, medical conditions and juvenile offenders. The potential benefits of art therapy in these five clinical populations is discussed and suggest that art therapy can be effective with children of the described categories.The limitations of this review and the current state of affairs are presented, alongside recommendations for future research to promote art therapy effectiveness research.Plain-language summaryThis article brings together all the research studies conducted so far on how helpful art therapy is for children. We use electronic databases to look at all the research published from 2000 to 2017. Only one study fell into this category and addressed children coping with persistent asthma. This article lends some weight to the claim that art therapy may help children dealing with medical conditions, and specifically persistent asthma.(5) Art therapy with juvenile offenders. Only one study fell into this category. This article supports the claim that art therapy may help juvenile offenders.
