Abstract:The spatiotemporal characteristics and human health risks of 12 heavy metals (Al, As, Be, Cd, Cr, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, and Tl) in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Zhejiang Province were investigated. The annual average PM2.5 concentration was 58.83 µg/m3 in 2015 in Zhejiang. Element contents in PM2.5 varied greatly with the season and locations. Al, Pb, and Mn were the most abundant elements among the studied metal(loid)s in PM2.5. The non-carcinogenic risks of the 12 elements through inhalation and dermal contact exposure were lower than the safe level for children and adults. However, there were potential non-carcinogenic risks of Tl, As, and Sb for children and Tl for adults through ingestion exposure. The carcinogenic risks from As, Be, Cd, Cr, Pb, and Ni through inhalation exposure were less than the acceptable level (1 × 10−4) for children and adults. Pb may carry a potential carcinogenic risk for both children and adults through ingestion. More attention should be paid to alleviate non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks posed by particle-bound toxic elements through ingestion exposure.

Abstract:The temporal variation, sources, and health risks of elemental composition in fine particles (PM2.5) were explored using online measurements of 19 elements with a time resolution of 1 h at an urban location in Changzhou, China, from December 10, 2020 to March 31, 2021. The mass concentration of PM2.5 was 50.1 ± 32.6 μg m−3, with a range of 3–218 μg m−3. The total concentration of 19 elements (2568 ± 1839 ng m−3) accounted for 5.1 % of PM2.5 mass concentration. S, Cl, Si, and Fe were the dominant elementary species, accounting for 90 % of total element mass concentrations during the whole campaign. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was applied to identify the major emission sources of elements in PM2.5. Seven factors, named secondary sulfate mixed with coal combustion, Cl-rich, traffic, iron and steel industry, soil dust, fireworks, and shipping, were identified. The major sources for elements were iron and steel industry, followed by soil dust and secondary sulfate mixed with coal combustion, explaining 32.0 %, 23.5 % and 16.7 % of the total source contribution, respectively. The total hazard index (HI) of elements was 3.01 for children and 1.18 for adults, much greater than the admissible level (HI = 1). The total carcinogenic risk (CR) in Changzhou was estimated to be 5.87 × 10−5, which was above the acceptable CR level (1 × 10−6). Among the calculated metal elements, Cr, Co and As have higher carcinogenic risk, and Co was found to trigger the highest noncarcinogenic risk to Children. Our results indicate that industrial emission is the dominant CR contributor, emphasizing the necessity for stringent regulation of industry sources. Overall, our study provides useful information for policymakers to reduce emissions and health risks from elements in the Yangtze River Delta region.

Abstract:Atmospheric metals have recently attracted the attention of governments recently due to their significant health risks. In retrospect, a five-year (2017–2021) continuous measurement of airborne metals (13 elements) was conducted in northern Zhejiang Province. A declining trend of total metals (22%) was found from 2017 to 2021, with K, Fe, Zn, Ca, and Mn being its predominant compositions (95.3%). The Random Forest model simulation demonstrated the important roles of meteorological conditions in the trace metal reduction, such as Ca, As, K, Cr, and Zn. In addition, the emission controls contributed more than 50% to most of the remaining metals, especially for Cu (92.6%) and V (85.9%), which demonstrated the effectiveness of the government policies. The relative humidity, wind speed and wind direction were found to be the most important variables affecting the ambient concentration of trace metals. Meteorology was demonstrated to be the worst for trace metal diffusion in 2018. The primary noncarcinogenic metal was Mn (85.9%), while the major carcinogenic metal was Cd (63.4%). Six sources were resolved by positive matrix factorization (PMF). Anthropogenic source emission was largest in winter, followed by spring, summer, and autumn. The reduction of ferrous metal smelting and coal combustion emissions might be the major goal for reducing the public health risk of trace metals in the future.

Abstract:PM2.5-bound metal contaminants are associated with multiple chronic diseases in human. At global level, the contamination status has not been well controlled yet. Here we report findings from a long-term air pollution surveillance in Jinan city of Shandong, China. During 2014–2022, the dynamics and trends of PM2.5-bound heavy metal contaminants were monitored in an industrial area and a downtown area. The surveillance targets included: antimony (Sb), aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), beryllium (Be), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se). The human exposure and health risks were calculated and we found that the health risks of most contaminants showed peak values in autumn and winter. But Al, Mn, Hg and Be were found to result in highest health risk in spring or summer in the downtown area. In the industrial area we identified 100% alarming health index >1 (ranged from 1.12 to 3.35) in autumn and winter. In winter the total non-carcinogenic HI was all above 1 (peak value 2.21). Mn and As together posed >85% non-carcinogenic risk. As and Cd were ranked as major drivers of carcinogenic risks (5.84 × 10 −6 and 2.78 × 10 −6 ). Pd and Cd both showed non-negligible environmental levels but risk assessment model for their air-exposure associated non-carcinogenic risks are not yet available. This study updates air pollution data and status for air pollution status in China. This study provides valuable 9 year long-term reference to experimental and field studies in the related fields.

Abstract:In this study, 24 h PM2.5 (particles with an equivalent diameter equal to or below 2.5 mu m) samples were collected in winter and summer in Xi'an, Northwestern China to characterize the seasonal variations of eleven elements (As, Cd, Cr, Fe, K, Mn, Mo, Pb, Ni, Zn, and Cu) and to evaluate their health risks by using the US EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) method. Mass concentrations of the elements (except Ni) in winter were much higher than those in summer, with similar variations for both seasons. The levels of elements followed a decreasing order of K > Zn > Fe > Pb > Cr > As > Mn > Cu > Mo > Ni > Cd. According to the enrichment factor (EF) analysis, the highest EF value for Cd inferred that it should be linked with the metal smelting and other anthropogenic sources. In contrast, the EF values of K and Mn (1 < EF < 5) suggested that they were influenced by both natural and anthropogenic sources. The daily average exposure dose for children and adults by different exposure pathways were both ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation. The non-cancer risks for different exposure pathways showed different orders. The non-cancer risks (hazard quotients) were lower than the average risk threshold (1.0) except for As, Pb, and Cr, which require greater attention. Elements of As and Cr were higher than the cancer risk threshold value (1 x 10(-6)), indicating that the cancer risks of PM2.5 elements in Xi'an should be a concern.

Abstract:Trace metals in atmospheric particulate matter (PM) are a serious threat to public health. Although pollution from toxic metals has been investigated in many Chinese cities, the spatial and temporal patterns in PM2.5 remain largely unknown. Long-term PM2.5 field sampling in 11 cities, combined with a systemic literature survey covering 51 cities, provides the first comprehensive database of 21 PM2.5-bound trace metals in China. Our results revealed that PM2.5 elemental compositions varied greatly, with generally higher levels in North China, especially for crustal elements. Pollution with Cr, As, and Cd was most serious, with 61, 38, and 16 sites, respectively, surpassing national standards, including some in rural areas. Local emissions, particularly from metallurgical industries, were the dominant factors driving the distribution in polluted cities such as Hengyang, Yuncheng, and Baiyin, which are mainly in North and Central China. Elevated As, Cd, and Cr levels in Yunnan, Guizhou Province within Southwest China were attributed to the high metal content of local coal. Diverse temporal trends of various elements that differed among regions indicated the complexity of emission patterns across the country. The results demonstrated high non-carcinogenic risks for those exposed to trace metals, especially for children and residents of heavily cities highly polluted with As, Pb, or Mn. The estimated carcinogenic risks ranged from 6.61 x 10(-6) to 1.92 x 10(-4) throughout China, with As being the highest priority element for control, followed by Cr and Cd. Regional diversity in major toxic metals was also revealed, highlighting the need for regional mitigation policies to protect vulnerable populations. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Study on the Characteristics of Size-Segregated Particulate Water-Soluble Inorganic Ions and Potentially Toxic Metals during Wintertime in a High Population Residential Area in Beijing, China

Abstract:Airborne particulate matter (PM) pollution often occurs in the wintertime in northern China, posing a potential threat to human health. To date, there are limited studies about the metals and inorganic ions to link source apportionments and health risk assessments in the different size-segregated PM samples. In this study, our samples were collected by a high-volume air sampler from 26 December 2018 to 11 January 2019 in a high population residential area (Beijing). Water-soluble inorganic ions, metal elements in the different size-segregated PM samples were determined for health risk assessments by inhalation of PM. During the sampling period in Beijing, the average concentrations of PM1.1 and PM1.1–2.0 were 39.67 ± 10.66 μg m−3 and 32.25 ± 6.78 μg m−3. Distinct distribution profiles characterized the different elements. The markers of coal combustion Pb, As, and Se had >52% of their mass concentration in PM1.1. The average mass ratios of (NO3− + NO2−)/SO42−, Cl−/Na+, Cl−/K+, and Cl−/(NO3− + NO2−) were 1.68, 6.58, 6.18, and 0.57, which showed that coal combustion and vehicle emissions were the main anthropogenic sources of PM in Beijing in winter. PM1.1 was the major contributor of Pb, Cd, and As for carcinogenic risks (CR) and hazard quotient (HQ). It was indicated that PM1.1 is more harmful than coarse PM. The toxic elements of Cr (VI) (1.12 × 10−6), V (0.69 × 10−6), and As (0.41 × 10−6) caused higher CR for children than Ni, Cd, Co, and Pb. Meanwhile, Pb (35.30 × 10−6) and Ni (21.07 × 10−6) caused higher CR for adults than As, Cr (VI), V, Co, and Cd, especially PM1.1. This study provides detailed composition data and the first report on human health in a high population residential area in Beijing.

Abstract:To better understand the source and health risk of metal elements in PM2.5, a field study was conducted from May to December 2018 in the central region of the Liaoning province, China, including the cities of Shenyang, Anshan, Fushun, Benxi, Yingkou, Liaoyang, and Tieling. 24 metal elements (Na, K, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Sn, Sb, Pb, Bi, Al, Sr, Mg, Ti, Ca, Fe, Ba, and Si) in PM2.5 were measured by ICP-MS and ICP-OES. They presented obvious seasonal variations, with the highest levels in winter and lowest in summer for all seven cities. The sum of 24 elements were ranged from to in these cities. The element mass concentration ratio was the highest in Yingkou in the spring (26.15%), and the lowest in Tieling in winter (3.63%). The highest values of elements in PM2.5 were mostly found in Anshan and Fushun among the studied cities. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) modelling revealed that coal combustion, industry, traffic emission, soil dust, biomass burning, and road dust were the main sources of measured elements in all cities except for Yingkou. In Yingkou, the primary sources were identified as coal combustion, metal smelting, traffic emission, soil dust, and sea salt. Health risk assessment suggested that Mn had non-carcinogenic risks for both adults and children. As for Cr, As, and Cd, there was carcinogenic risks for adults and children in most cities. This study provides a clearer understanding of the regional pollution status of industrial urban agglomeration.

Abstract:Given the increasing complexity of the chemical composition of PM 2.5 , identifying and quantitatively assessing the contributions of pollution sources has played an important role in formulating policies to control particle pollution. This study provides a comprehensive assessment between PM 2.5 chemical characteristics, sources, and health risks based on sampling data conducted over 1 year (March 2018 to February 2019) in Nanjing. Results show that PM 2.5 exhibits a distinct variation across different seasons, which is primarily driven by emissions, meteorological conditions, and the chemical conversion of gaseous pollutants. First, the chemical mass reconstruction shows that secondary inorganic aerosols (62.5 %) and carbonaceous aerosols (21.3 %) contributed most to the PM 2.5 mass. The increasing oxidation rates of SO 2 and NO 2 from summer to winter indicate that the secondary transformation of gaseous pollutants is strongly positively correlated with relative humidity. Second, the positive matrix factorization (PMF) method shows that identified PM 2.5 sources include secondary inorganic aerosol source (SIS, 42.5 %), coal combustion (CC, 22.4 %), industry source (IS, 17.3 %), vehicle emission (VE, 10.7 %), fugitive dust (FD, 5.8 %), and other sources (1.3 %). The Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model and the concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) analysis are used to further explore different spatial distributions and regional transport of sources. The concentrations (10–11 μ g m −3 ) of SIS and CC distribute in Nanjing and central China in winter. The concentrations (8–10 μ g m −3 ) of IS and VE are potentially located north of Jiangsu, Anhui, and Jiangxi. Finally, the health risk assessment indicates that the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of toxic elements (Cr, As, Ni, Mn, V, and Pb) mainly come from IS, VE, and CC, which are within the tolerance or acceptable level. Although the main source of pollution in Nanjing is SIS at present, we should pay more attention to the health burden of vehicle emissions, coal combustion, and industrial processes.

Abstract:The frequent haze episodes in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) of China have been of great public concern due to the high risks to human health. Therefore, a better understanding of the sources and characteristics of particulate matters (PM) and associated elements is crucial and urgent for haze controlling. In this study, air particulates were collected from six different functional areas in a megacity of the YRD, China in early winter of 2012. Highly time- and size-resolved analysis of PM-elements was conducted to trace their sources. Our results showed that the main donors to particulate elements were crustal dust, followed by traffic and industrial influences due to the mixed residential, commercial and industrial zones at most sites. Anthropogenesis contributed more to the sources of finer particles and associated elements than those of coarser ones. Besides the local emission sources, meteorological conditions also affected the distribution patterns of ambient elements. Furthermore, the risks of hazard metals in PM2.5 and PM1.0 to human health were estimated. The highest non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were observed at urban living quarter (ULQ) and eco-industrial park (EIP), respectively. In addition, the general risks at rural living quarters (RLQ) were the lowest. Results from this study may provide valuable information for air pollution control and management in the YRD, China.
Source-Specific Health Risk of PM2.5-Bound Metals in a Typical Industrial City, Central China, 2021–2022

Abstract:In order to study the pollution characteristics, sources, and health risks of heavy metals in urban atmospheric PM2.5, samples were collected in Huangshi City from June 2021 to May 2022. The contents of 16 kinds of metal elements were analyzed by XRF, and the pollution degree and sources of elements were analyzed by the enrichment factor method, correlation analysis, and cluster analysis. The health risk of heavy metal elements was evaluated by the USEPA health risk assessment model. The results of enrichment factor analysis show that the metal elements carried by PM2.5 were affected by human emissions except for Ti. Heavy metals mainly come from industrial sources, motor vehicle sources, mixed combustion sources, and dust sources, according to correlation analysis and cluster analysis. Mn had a non-carcinogenic risk to children, and the non-carcinogenic risk of other elements to the human body was generally acceptable. The carcinogenic risks of Cr, As, Cd, and Co exceeded the acceptable carcinogenic risk threshold (10−6 ~10−4), and there were potential carcinogenic risks.

Abstract:In this study, 30 elements in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were measured in 18 Chinese cities in 2013. Elemental pollution in northern, southwest, and central China were severe, attributing to excessive coal and biomass combustion in these regions. The concentrations of S, Cl, and K in these areas were 8.21 ± 3.90, 4.03 ± 1.96, and 1.59 ± 0.613 μg/m3, respectively, which were 1.6–2.7 times higher than those in other regions of China. In addition, the industrial emissions in northeast and north China were large, leading to the elevated heavy metal concentration of 1.32 ± 1.17 μg/m3, especially Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, and Br. Soil dust was the highest in northwest China among the five regions with the concentration of crustal elements of 6.37 ± 4.51 μg/m3. Moreover, although the levels of elemental concentration in east and southeast China were relatively acceptable, regulators must pay attention to elevated level of V (0.009 ± 0.006 μg/m3) in these areas. Compared with 2003, several elements have deteriorated in some cities. For example, As increased by 70%, 18%, and 155% in Changchun, Beijing, and Jinchang, respectively. However, ~ 77% measured elements, e.g., Ti, Fe, and Pb markedly reduced in 2013, with reduction rates of 13–81%. These indicate that the government's policies related to particle-bound elements have shown certain positive environmental effects. For the health risks from the heavy metals in 2013, the non-cancer risks of As and Cd must not be neglected. The cancer risks of As and Pb were much higher than the international safety limit (10−4). More prominent health risks were found in southwest, central, and northwest China. Therefore, the government should accelerate the shift to cleaner energy in underdeveloped areas of China to obtain more environmental and health benefits.

Abstract:Metal components in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) are closely associated with many adverse health outcomes. Dynamic changes of metals in PM2.5 are critical for risk assessment due to their temporal variations. Herein, an online method for real-time determination of multi-elements (As, Cd, Cs, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Pb, Rb, Sn, Tl, and V) in PM2.5 was established by directly introducing air samples into inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). Meanwhile, a quantified method using metal standard aerosols (Cr, Mo, and W) and high time resolution for 3.3 min online measurement was developed and validated. The limits of detection were in the range of 0.001–6.30 ng/m3 for different metals. Subsequently, the real-time contents of multi-elements in PM2.5 for 12 h over 33 days were measured at different air qualities. Temporal variations of crustal elements like Fe, Mg are similar to PM2.5, whereas toxic elements (Pb, As and Cd) have upward trends at dusk. This denoted the association with various emission sources and different exposure concentrations of metals. In addition to the acquisition of real-time information, online analysis of multi-elements in PM2.5 is beneficial for atmospheric monitoring and provides critical insights into the different exposure risks of metals in PM2.5 at varying times.

Abstract:The continuous monitoring of PM2.5 (including 12 metal elements) was conducted in Jinan, a city with poor air quality in China, during the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020). Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was used to identify emission sources of PM2.5-bound metals, and the health risks of the metals and their emission sources were assessed. During the study period, the concentration of most metals showed a decreasing trend (except Al and Be), and a significant seasonal difference was found: winter > fall > spring > summer. The PMF analysis showed that there were four main sources of PM2.5-bound metals, and their contributions to the total metals (TMs) were dust emissions (54.3%), coal combustion and industrial emissions (22.3%), vehicle emissions (19.3%), and domestic emissions (4.1%). The results of the health risk assessment indicated that the carcinogenic risk of metals (Cr and As) exceeded the acceptable level (1 × 10-6), which was of concern. Under the influence of emission reduction measures, the contribution of emission sources to health risks changes dynamically, and the emission sources that contribute more to health risks were coal combustion and industrial emissions, as well as vehicle emissions. In addition, our findings suggest that a series of emission reduction measures effectively reduced the health risk from emission sources of PM2.5-bound metals.
Size distributions and health risks of particle-bound toxic elements in the southeast coastland of China

Abstract:Size-fractionated samples were collected at five coastal urban sites in Fujian Province, southeast China, in 2016 and 2017 to determine the trace elements using ICP-MS. Ca, Fe, Al, Mg, and K were the most abundant elements among the studied elements in TSP, much higher than those of heavy metals. The annual mean concentrations of Pb, As, V, Ni, Cd, and Mn were within the acceptable limits of the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China while Cr(VI) exceeded the limits. Most elements exhibited clear seasonal patterns with maxima over the cold season and minima over the warm season. The spatial variabilities in concentrations of the measured elements were not significant except Ni and V. However, the size distribution pattern of each element was quite similar across the region. Characteristic size distributions of elements allowed identification of three main groups: (a) unimodal distribution in the coarse fraction for Ca, Al, Mg, and Ba; (b) unimodal distribution in the fine fraction for Pb, Se, As, Ag, V, Ni, Zn, and Cd; and (c) bimodal or multimodal distribution for Fe, Mn, Cr, K, and Cu. The combination of the size-fractionated concentrations, enrichment factors, correlation coefficients, and factor analysis offered the identification of mixed sources such as vehicular exhaust and wear, heavy fuel oil combustion, and resuspension of road dust. Non-carcinogenic health risks associated with inhalable exposure to airborne metals were higher than the safety threshold (hazard index > 1) across the region, suggesting non-carcinogenic health risks via inhalation. Mn, V, and Ni contributed 74–83% of the total non-carcinogenic risk. The assessment investigation of carcinogenic health risks revealed V and Cr(VI) as elements with the largest carcinogenic risks, accounting for more than 95% of the overall inhalation risk. Nevertheless, the carcinogenic risks for children and adults were between 10−6 and 10−4, within the range considered acceptable by the US EPA. In terms of the size-fractionated risk, PM2.5 contributed 43–50% and 39–44% of the total non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks, respectively, indicating the potential health hazard of coarse particle–bound toxic metals was not negligible.

Abstract:ObjectivesThe concentrations and characteristics of trace metals in PM2.5 vary in time and location and can result in various health impacts. The current study aimed to investigate the characteristics and distributions of PM2.5-bound trace metals and further identify the possible sources and conduct health risk assessment in Zhejiang, China.MethodsPM2.5 samples were collected during 2015–2019 at seven monitoring sites in Zhejiang, China. Twelve trace metals in ambient PM2.5 were determined. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was applied to quantify the potential sources of PM2.5. The chemical daily intake (CDI) via ingestion, exposure concentration (EC) via inhalation and dermally absorbed dose (DAD) via contact were estimated to assess the health risks.ResultsThe seasonal variations of both PM2.5 and trace metals showed the highest in winter and the lowest in summer. Among the studied trace metals, Aluminum (Al), Lead (Pb) and Manganese (Mn) had the highest concentrations. Soil dust, coal combustion and traffic-related emissions were the main sources of the air pollution at most sites in Zhejiang. Health risk assessment showed that ingestion was the primary exposure pathway, and children were more likely to be affected by ambient trace metals. The non-carcinogenic risks of arsenic (As), Pb, Antimony (Sb) and Thallium (Tl) as well as carcinogenic risks of As, Pb and nickel (Ni) should be paid more attention to.ConclusionsPM2.5-bound trace metals are of great public health concern, particularly related to the potential health risks of As, Pb and Tl. Corresponding emission control measures of metal elements in PM2.5 should be considered.

Abstract:Atmospheric PM2.5 samples were collected in Heze, Shandong Province, from a total of three sampling sites at Heze College, Huarun Pharmacy, and a wastewater treatment plant between October 15, 2017 and January 31, 2018, to determine the concentrations of 21 metal elements in PM2.5 using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The degree of elemental enrichment was also discussed, the health risks and potential heavy metal ecological risks were assessed. The results showed that ρ (PM2.5) ranged from 26.7 to 284.1 μg·m-3 at the three sampling sites during the sampling period, and the concentration values did not differ significantly, all of which were at high pollution levels. The highest concentrations of K were found in the three sampling sites, accounting for 31.03%, 39.47%, and 38.43% of the total, respectively, mainly due to the high contribution of biomass burning in autumn and winter in Heze, a large agricultural city. The highest concentrations of Zn, 89.70, 84.21, and 67.68 ng·m-3, were found in the trace elements at the three sampling sites, respectively. The enrichment factor results showed that the enrichment factor values of Zn, Pb, Sn, Sb, Cd, and Se were higher than 100, among which the enrichment factors of Cd and Se were higher than 2 000 and 4 000, respectively, which were significantly influenced by anthropogenic activities and might have been related to industrial production, metal smelting, road sources, and coal combustion emissions. The health risk results showed that there was some potential non-carcinogenic risk (HQ>0.1 for children and adults) for As and a combined potential non-carcinogenic risk (HI>0.1) and some potential carcinogenic risk (CRT>1×10-6) for both children and adults at the three sampling sites. There was a more significant carcinogenic risk (CRT>1×10-4) for adults at the wastewater treatment plant, and the slightly higher carcinogenic risk for adults than that for children may have been related to the longer outdoor activity and higher PM2.5 exposure for adults. The elements with the highest potential ecological risk values were Cd, As, and Pb, with Cd exhibiting a very high potential ecological risk that should be taken seriously. All three sampling sites showed a very high combined potential ecological risk, with the intensity spatially expressed as Heze College>Huarun Pharmacy>wastewater treatment plant.

Abstract:The prevalence of trace elements from industrial and traffic activities poses potential health risks through inhalation exposure. Prior studies have focused on trace elements in water, food, and dust, and less attention has been paid to their occurrence in fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ). In this study, 1424 air samples were collected from three districts (Nanshan, Longgang, and Yantian) in Shenzhen from 2016 to 2021, and we analyzed the concentrations, temporal trends, and spatial distributions of PM 2.5 and associated trace elements. Both PM 2.5 and trace elements exhibited decreasing trends and similar seasonal variations, with high levels in cold seasons and low levels in warm seasons. In terms of spatial distributions, the concentrations of PM 2.5 and trace elements in Nanshan and Longgang were significantly higher than those in Yantian, likely due to the industrial structure and traffic activities. It is worth noting that PM 2.5 was identified as a potential mediator of the effect of meteorological parameters on trace element levels. Besides, the values of estimated daily intake (EDI) and uptake (EDU) suggested that infants and young children experienced an elevated risk of exposure to trace elements. While the annual average excess hazard indexes (R) were below the safety threshold (10 −6 ), carcinogenic trace elements like arsenic (As) and chromium (Cr) posed a greater potential threat to human health compared to non-carcinogenic trace elements.
