Abstract:Under the background of "double first-class" construction, the teaching staff, as the foundation of the construction of colleges and universities, determines the overall construction effect of colleges and universities.High-level teachers are the guarantee of talent cultivation, education and teaching, scientific research and competitiveness of colleges and universities.However, the improvement of teachers' quality is affected by many factors, which leads to teachers' choices that affect their overall performance when facing teaching and scientific research tasks.In view of this, this study attempts to determine the relationship between professional ability, incentive mechanism and career satisfaction in Chinese universities and colleges, and to propose ways to improve teacher quality.A total of 400 valid questionnaires were collected in this study, and SPSS 26.0 software was used for descriptive analysis, variance analysis and regression analysis.The results show that there is a positive correlation between professional ability, incentive mechanism and teacher satisfaction in Chinese universities.This means that the stronger the professional ability of teachers, the better the incentive mechanism, the higher the satisfaction of teachers, and the corresponding improvement of teacher quality.Through this research, universities may encourage and support the training and professional development of young teachers.This will help balance the age structure of the teaching force and provide more development opportunities for young teachers.As teachers themselves, they may continuously improve their level of professional ability, including teaching and academic ability, and formulate their own career plans in order to adapt to the constant changes in society.Regular teacher training programs should be established to help enhance their professional competence, while salaries and benefits should be improved to better motivate teachers.

Abstract:Enhancing rural teacher job satisfaction, which is a pivotal aspect in elevating the overall quality of rural education, serves as a crucial means to promote balanced educational development and to foster societal equity and cohesion. The objective of the study was to explore the factors that influence job satisfaction of rural teachers teaching in China's Heartland. 15 rural primary school teachers were meticulously chosen for in-depth interviews, utilizing a qualitative research paradigm and purposive sampling technique, spanning from March 2021 to July 2021. With reference to Hoppock's view of job satisfaction, this study designed an interview outline based on specificities of rural workplaces. Through in-depth interviews, a wealth of first-hand text materials was collected about rural teacher job satisfaction. Then these textual materials were processed with a rigorous tertiary coding based on grounded theory. This study found that rural teacher job satisfaction was influenced by various factors, encompassing both external and internal factors. External factors included national policies, campus culture, and rural environment. Internal factors included growth experience and self-cognition. Further, strong external support was strongly associated with improvement of rural teacher job satisfaction. Intra-individual characteristics of rural teachers were the most implicit influencing factors.

Abstract:A rising number of research shows that teachers' ability to excite pupils has an impact on their motivation, involvement, and academic success. The study focuses on the schooling administration development strategies affect rural teachers' skills, motivation, and performance in China's rural schools, as well as school administration support as a mediator. 280 rural school teachers from various schools in China participated in an online and in-person survey for the analysis. The results of structural equation modelling (SEM) show that teaching experience enhances performance. The findings of the study also revealed a relationship between the effectiveness of Chinese rural school teachers and their training, experience, and support from the administration of their respective schools. Additional research can be carried out to keep the understanding of our model accurate. There was yet another drawback to using a quantitative, closed-ended questionnaire. The cross-sectional form of the study makes it challenging to demonstrate a cause-and-effect relationship. A more complex approach, including student responses to instructors' motivation, student interest, and their assessments of teachers' teaching methods, will enable future research to help us better understand the process of teacher motivation. The results of this study can offer useful information to policy makers and educational administrators on the best ways to enhance teachers' abilities and performance in rural areas. The study could also show how these tactics affect teachers' motivation, which is important for keeping good instructors in rural areas.

Abstract:SAGE Open, Volume 13, Issue 2, April-June 2023. Teacher job satisfaction has been investigated as a critical influence on teacher turnout and the development of high-quality schools. Employing hierarchical linear modeling (HLM), the present study examined the effects of both teacher- and school-level factors on teacher job satisfaction in Japan and South Korea. Education in both countries is rooted in an East Asian cultural setting, and a comparison across the two countries will contribute to the discovery of underlying factors that affect teacher job satisfaction. The current study, based on the 2018 Teaching and Learning International Survey, showed that gender, teaching experience, social utility motivation to teach, self-efficacy, teacher-student relations, professional development, and team innovativeness exerted a crucial influence on teacher job satisfaction at teacher-level for Japan and South Korea. Furthermore, school sector, school delinquency and violence, and lack of special needs personnel were distinctive factors at school-level related to teacher job satisfaction for the two countries. The findings were discussed within the East Asian cultural context as well as comparatively, regarding East Asian versus Western cultures.

Abstract:Governments and professional organizations around the world have realized that successful recruitment and retention policies are vital to address the shortage of teachers in rural and remote areas. To the best of our knowledge, despite extensive advocacy of policies and discussions pertaining to their implications, an academic investigation into how student teachers perceive the policies and how their policy perception influences rural employment intentions has rarely been performed. Herein, this study is devoted to investigating the impact of policy perception on student-teacher rural employment intentions. In this study, the participants consist of undergraduate and postgraduate students at Chinese universities who specialize in preparing teachers of all disciplines. A questionnaire survey and quantitative analysis based on commercially available software Questionnaire Star, SPSS 26.0, Amos 26.0 and RMediation package were performed in data acquisition and analysis. It was found that student-teacher perception of the supporting policy Rural Revitalization Strategy was a little below average. High policy perception leads to an increase in the intentions of student teachers to seek employment in rural areas, and social support and positive job perception mediate the linkage between policy perception and rural employment intentions. It was also found that a difference in academic qualifications, census registration, and unpaid teaching satisfaction exists in the intentions to teach in rural schools. Such effects can be explained by the push–pull theory. Finally, this study provides recommendations for governments, universities, rural schools, and families.

Abstract:<span>Given that teacher shortage is an international problem, teacher job satisfaction merits closer attention. Not only is job satisfaction closely related to teacher retention, but it also contributes to the well-being of teachers and their students, overall school cohesion and enhanced status of the teaching profession. This study investigates the relations between teacher job satisfaction, school working conditions and teacher characteristics for eighth grade mathematics teachers. The study employs TIMSS 2015 (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) data from Sweden. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling are used as main methods. Results demonstrate a substantial association between school working conditions and teacher job satisfaction. More specifically, teacher workload, teacher cooperation and teacher perceptions of student discipline in school were the factors most closely related to teacher job satisfaction. As to teacher characteristics, female teachers, teachers with more exposure to professional development and more efficacious teachers tended to have higher levels of job satisfaction. In addition, it was found that the relationship between the extent of teacher cooperation and job satisfaction was more pronounced for male teachers, while student discipline was more important for job satisfaction of teachers with lower self-efficacy beliefs. Implications for policy are further discussed.</span>

Abstract:Extant research continues to establish the importance of teacher job satisfaction to student performance, yet teacher job satisfaction remains under-investigated in rural China. In this paper, we examine the prevalence and correlates of teacher job satisfaction. Using data from 634 teachers across 120 schools in rural China, we find an alarmingly high prevalence of teacher job dissatisfaction: roughly 21% of rural teachers were less than satisfied with their jobs. In addition, we find that several individual- and school-level characteristics, including being a male teacher, being a homeroom teacher, not having a management role in school, being a middle-aged teacher, and a school’s boarding status, are correlated with teacher job dissatisfaction. In sum, the results demonstrate a need for further research and policy interventions to improve teacher job satisfaction in rural schools.

Abstract:Journal of Teacher Education, Ahead of Print. The promotion of effective teacher professional development (ETPD) is a critical issue in the field of teacher education. The present study investigated how ETPD is affected simultaneously by teacher- and school-level factors across the United States, China, Finland, and Singapore. The data were drawn from the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS 2018) and analyzed using a hierarchical linear model. Findings showed that scores on social utility motivation to teach, self-efficacy in student engagement, and school participative climate were positively and significantly correlated with scores on ETPD across the four countries. It was concluded that gender, education background, teaching experience, personal utility motivation to teach, teacher self-efficacy in classroom management, and teacher–student relations made significant, yet inconsistent, differences in ETPD in the four countries. Motivating teachers to teach and creating a democratic, participatory, and caring school culture may be important measures to promote effective professional development of teachers globally.

Abstract:This research is aim at a deeper understanding of factors that leading Chinese rural teachers' (CRTs) turnover in their profession. The study regarded in-service CRTs ( n = 408) as the participants, adopted the semi-structured interview and an online questionnaire to collect the data, and used grounded theory and FsQCA to analysis the data based. We have found that (A) welfare allowance, emotional support, and working environment can be substituted equivalently to increase CRTs' retention intention while professional identity regarded as the core condition; (B) career development is neglected for two reasons: one is CRTs compensated for inadequate social support by self-improvement; another is CRTs adapted themselves to accept professional stagnation; (C) the CRTs will have a strong intention to retain but lack enthusiasm for teaching because lack professional identity when the external environment is favorable. This study clarified the complicated causal relationships between CRTs' retention intention and its factors, contributed to the practical development of CRTs workforce.

Abstract:Estonian students achieved high scores in the latest Programme for International Student Assessment surveys. At the same time, there needs to be more knowledge about the teachers guiding these students, as this could provide insights into effective teaching methods that can be replicated in other educational contexts. According to the Teaching and Learning International Survey, Estonian teachers' average age is among the highest in the world, and the shortage of young, qualified mathematics teachers is well-documented. The present study aimed to map the motivating and demotivating factors for mathematics teachers to continue working in this profession. The effective sample comprised 164 Estonian mathematics teachers who responded to items regarding self-efficacy and job satisfaction and open-ended questions about motivating and demotivating factors regarding their work. The results showed that students , salary and vacation , and job environment are both motivating and demotivating for mathematics teachers. On the one hand, helping the students to succeed (and witnessing the progress), satisfying salaries and a good job climate motivate the teachers. And at the same time, students' low motivation, poor salary, and straining work conditions (e.g., very high workload) serve as demotivating factors. We showed that mathematics teachers' work experience is an essential factor to be considered when thinking about motivating and demotivating factors for teachers, as well as their self-efficacy and job satisfaction. The reasons, possible impact, and potential interventions on an educational policy level are discussed.

Abstract:Teacher shortage is a major hindrance to China’s rural education growth in underdeveloped areas, as well as one of the main causes of educational injustice. We conducted a survey of 5,554 teachers from 117 towns in H province in the Wuling Mountains Zone to investigate the issue of rural school teacher supply. From geographical, emotional, and institutional perspectives, we used a polynomial logit model to examine the validity of the “hometown effects” hypothesis. The findings showed that hometown effects exist in China in all three dimensions. The institutional hometown effects are the most pronounced; when compared to open recruitment, teachers sourced through teacher supply augmentation programs (such as the Secondary Normal Graduates Program, Special Position Program, and Targeted Position Program) are more likely to teach in rural schools, particularly more disadvantaged village primary schools or teaching sites. China’s policy of increasing teacher supply has had a considerable positive influence on rural school staffing. Students from rural areas make better teacher candidates; feelings for hometowns should be encouraged among normal school or university students in pre-service education; and the implementation of teacher support policies should be emphasized to retain rural teachers and improve their teaching quality.

Abstract:This study aims to describe the impact of various motivation factors on the level of teachers’ job satisfaction. Researchers have used quantitative methods to describe the relationship between motivation factors and the teachers’ overall job satisfaction level. The quantitative study is a non-experimental type, correlational, and conducted with over 700 secondary school teachers from Durrës, Tirana and Elbasan municipalities in Albania. This paper used a structured questionnaire, which contains three sections. The first section includes teachers’ demographic characteristic; in the second section, there are 32 statements (indicators) included in the Job Motivation Questionnaire, which evaluates and measures the teachers’ job motivation level; the third section features 23 indicators in The Job Satisfaction Index, which measures the teachers’ overall job satisfaction level. The findings of this study demonstrate that there is a substantial positive relationship between job motivation and job satisfaction (r=.52, p<0.01). The results of this study showed that external and internal motivation explain 24% of the job pleasure variability where internal motivation turned out to have a higher impact and external motivation a relatively lower one. Results from this study will serve future studies in search of strategies to improve the working conditions in order to have more motivated teachers within the context where they work. Abstract:ABSTRACT The teacher shortage is a critical issue in many rural areas around the world. This paper presents the findings of two studies that investigated the impact of financial incentives on teacher attraction and retention in rural schools in Western China. Using the theory of compensating wage differentials and a mixed-method approach, we found that providing living subsidies to student-teachers has an impact on teacher attraction but not retention, while tuition fee and loan reimbursements have a positive impact on both attraction and retention. For teachers already teaching in rural schools, the amount of the living subsidy, satisfaction with the policy, and identification of the policy are the key factors that affect the success of the policy. We argue that for the subsidy amount to be effective, it should be based on feedback from rural teachers and be at least 15% of their monthly salary.

Abstract:Abstract With the continuous development of artificial intelligence technology, rural education is crucial in Chinese education, and the problem of rural teachers’ incentive mechanisms directly affects the quality of rural education. Firstly, according to the incentive mechanism of rural teachers, quantitative and qualitative research on the incentive mechanism of teachers in rural areas using the fuzzy evaluation method is proposed. In the fuzzy judgment matrix, each level is determined based on the decomposition of the previous level, and the results of the previous level are determined based on the calculation results of the next level. Then, using the relevant motivation theory and questionnaires, the principal and teachers of the school were investigated to understand the current situation and main problems of the construction of teachers’ motivation mechanism in the junior high school of Un Dong Town, Duyun City. Using the fuzzy evaluation method to analyze the difference between the actual feeling and expected demand of teachers’ motivation, the result shows that the difference between salary and promotion is 1.22 and 1.19, which means that the difference between salary and promotion is bigger in the motivation mechanism of rural teachers, and we should focus on reforming the salary scheme and implementing the promotion training mechanism of rural teachers. This study confronts the problem of rural teachers’ incentive mechanism, which has good theoretical and practical guidance for improving education quality and so on.
High School Teachers' Motivational Perceptions and Strategies in an East Asian Nation

Abstract:This study investigated the relationships between teachers' self‐reported classroom goal structures, instructional self‐perceptions, teaching efficacy, and perceptions of students' motivation in a developing East Asian nation. This study's participants were 404 teachers, across subject areas, in 14 high schools in an East Asian nation. Similar studies have been conducted in western nations, but these cannot be generalised to the East Asian cultural context without direct research. The following teacher perceptions correlated strongly with perceptions of student motivation: learning goal orientations; student ability; instrumentality of instruction; and high teaching self‐efficacy. Among these related factors, learning goals and ability emerged as the strongest predictors of perceived student motivation. Teachers interviewed reported that their students' motivation is primarily extrinsic and performance‐oriented, influenced by external factors, predominantly exam pressure and social expectations. These findings have important implications for teacher education and practice, and for school policy and educational reform.

Abstract:Using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) and expert reviews, this study examined the factors affecting teacher job satisfaction (TJS) across four selected collectivistic and individualistic countries. The existing 2018 Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) data associated with these countries were used for HLM analysis. The results indicated that student behavior stress, workload stress, distributed leadership, and lack of special needs personnel had different impact on TJS in these two cultural contexts. At the teacher level, teachers in individualistic countries who experienced student behavior stress reported lower TJS than teachers in collectivistic countries. Conversely, teachers in collectivistic countries who experienced heavy workload stress reported higher TJS than teachers in individualistic countries. At the school level, distributed leadership positively impacted TJS in collectivistic countries, while lack of special needs personnel had negative impact on TJS in individualistic countries. Causes of these cultural differences were suggested by experts with expertise in both cultures.

Abstract:A stable teaching force is an important guarantee for the sustainable development of education. Teacher turnover is one of the reasons for the teacher shortage in rural areas. Although studies have examined the influencing factors of teachers' turnover intention, little is known about the effect of subjective social status on teachers' turnover intention, especially for publicly funded normal students program (PFNSP) teachers who play a vital role in improving the quality of education in less developed regions of central and western China. A questionnaire survey was conducted, which returned a total of 16,731 responses (8141 public recruited teachers and 1498 teachers from PFNSP). The study explores the influence of subjective social class on PFNSP teachers' retention intention and the mediating role of organizational and professional identity on this impact. Except for organizational identity, the subjective social class, professional identity, and retention intentions of PFNSP teachers were significantly lower than those of publicly recruited teachers. There was a significant association between subjective social class and retention intentions of PFNSP teachers. In addition, organizational identity and professional identity had a significant positive relationship to PFNSP teachers' retention intention, and played partial mediating roles in the relationship between subjective social class and retention intentions.

A Study of Social Environmental Support and Turnover Intention among Rural Primary School Teachers in China

Abstract:The quality of education in rural areas is negatively impacted by teacher attrition. An in-depth study of the issue of rural teacher turnover intention is of great significance to the promotion of educational equity. The main research objective is to identify the level of social environmental support and turnover intention of rural primary school teachers in China. The current study utilizes a quantitative survey methodology. Simple random sampling was used to select 132 rural primary school teachers in Pingyin County. The survey instrument was developed based on prior research. Questionnaires were distributed among participants, and data analysis was performed using SPSS version 27.0 to derive the mean, standard deviation, and frequency. The findings of this study indicate that there is a medium level of turnover intention among rural teachers. In terms of social environmental support, respondents acknowledged that their satisfaction with the social support they received from family and supervisors was lower than that of their peers, the majority of teachers expressed a moderate level of social environmental support. The findings enrich knowledge about turnover intention among rural teachers and inspire us to create a more supportive atmosphere to meet teachers’ working needs and reduce the turnover rate.

Abstract:Teacher job satisfaction and well-being have a significant impact on educational outcomes, considering that teaching is the main objective of the educational process. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between teacher job satisfaction and four main categories of determinants: self-efficacy, relational aspects (colleague collaboration, student behavior, school management), work-related aspects (administrative workload, teaching tasks), and working conditions, in order to identify various implications for teachers’ well-being. The study employs a survey delivered to 658 K-12 (pre-university) teachers, from the North-West region of Romania. We used factorial analysis and a structural equation model to test eight proposed hypotheses. The results showed that self-efficacy, promotion, positive student behavior, and working conditions have significant effects on job satisfaction. These factors influence job satisfaction and well-being in the teaching profession because they ensure a positive work environment in which teachers and students thrive, thus leading to higher levels of involvement from teachers, students, and parents alike. An efficient work environment decreases attrition, burnout, emotional exhaustion, and teacher turnover, while increasing job satisfaction, well-being, and teacher retention.

Abstract:This paper proposes a theoretical framework to understand the structure and determinants for rural teacher well-being (TWB), with a focus on key factors that can mediate low pay and poor work conditions, specifically teachers’ professional learning (PL) and community engagement (CE). This framework was tested using structural equation model in a sample of 3155 rural teachers in China. The quantitative results confirmed a second-order factor structure for TWB, evidencing the significant impact of pay satisfaction and the mediating effects of PL and CE of rural teachers. Implications encourage policymakers to strengthen rural TWB by enhancing PL and community connections, while continuing to seek ways to improve pay and work conditions.
