Abstract:We have performed close-coupling calculations on electron scattering by Ca atoms and on photodetachment of Ca- ions by using a six-state (S-1- P-3- D-3- D-1- P-1- P-1) R-matrix method. We predict a strong interaction between (4s(21)S+epsilon d)D-2 and (4s4p(3)P+epsilon p)D-2 channels that gives rise to two relatively broad resonance peaks in the d-wave cross section. In addition, one obtains a strong and a weak peak in the total scattering cross section. Our calculations on the photodetachment cross section of Ca- ions yield results that are in good qualitative agreement with the experimental data by allowing for the opening of a detachment channel connected to the excited state 4s4p(3)P.

Abstract:In the frame of quantum defect theory, the dielectronic recombination cross sections of Ca19+ ion are calculated by a simple relativistic configuration interaction method. Based on this calculation, the resonant transfer and excitation cross sections of Ca19+ with H-2 and He targets are estimated in impulse approximation. The theoretical results for Ca19+ + H-2 system are compared with the measurements available. The effect of target electron momentum distribution on the resonant transfer and excitation cross sections is discussed.

Abstract:R-matrix calculations have been carried out to investigate the effect core-valence electron correlation on the scattering of electrons with Ca atoms at low energies. While the major feature of the d-wave shape resonance with a peak near 1.3 eV in the total cross section can be reproduced by including only the correlation among the valence electrons, we show that the existence of a low-energy peak near 0.15 eV, which has also been observed experimentally, can be obtained,only if the correlations between the valence and core electrons are considered. This;low-energy peak is shown not caused by a shape resonance, but rather due to the rapid decrease of the s(-) and p(-) wave phase,shifts with collision energies. The present result also indirectly supports the previous conclusion that core-valence electron correlation is responsible for bringing the electron affinity of Ca- from 72 to 15 meV, i.e., to a value which is, much closer to the experiment. Abstract:The R-matrix method has been used to perform a five-state (S-1-P-2(o)-D-3-D-1-P-1(o)) close-coupling calculation on the photodetachment of Ca- ions with photon energies from threshold to 4 eV. Calculations both with and without the core-valence electron correlation are carried out. The dominant core-valence electron correlation is included by exciting one 3p electron to the valence orbitals. It has been found that the so-called core-valence correlation is quite crucial to the prediction of the position of the Cooper minimum and the distinct behavior of the photodetachment cross sections near P-3(o) and P-1(o) thresholds. The core-valence correlated calculation results in a Cooper minimum at 1.20 eV and a narrow shape resonance just above the 4s3p P-1(o) threshold. These structures are in good agreement with experimental observations. The present result also supports the previous conclusion that core-valence electron correlation is responsible for reducing the electron affinity of valence-only results to much closer to the experiment.

Abstract:This work reports radiative transition rates and electron impact excitation rate coefficients for levels of the n= 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 configurations of Ca II. The radiative data were computed using the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac central potential method in the frozen core approximation and includes the polarization interaction between the valence electron and the core using a model potential. This method allows for configuration interactions (CI) and relativistic effects in the Breit-Pauli formalism. Collision strengths in LS-coupling were calculated in the close coupling approximation with the R-matrix method. Then, fine structure collision strengths were obtained by means of the intermediate-coupling frame transformation (ICFT) method which accounts for spin-orbit coupling effects. We present extensive comparisons with the most recent calculations and measurements for Ca II as well as a comparison between the core polarization results and the "unpolarized" values. We find that core polarization affects the computed lifetimes by up to 20%. Our results are in very close agreement with recent measurements for the lifetimes of metastable levels. The present collision strengths were integrated over a Maxwellian distribution of electron energies and the resulting effective collision strengths are given for a wide range of temperatures. Our effective collision strengths for the resonance transitions are within ~11% from previous values derived from experimental measurements, but disagree with latter computations using the distorted wave approximation.

Abstract:Collisions are treated by a method that has been very successful in calculating atomic spectra. Results of electron collisions with Be+, Mg+, and Ca+ are presented, showing extensive series of double excitation resonances of the collision complex. Convergence of the results to the limit of peripheral collisions, where the Born approximation holds, is displayed. Cross sections of optically allowed and forbidden excitations are evaluated, including cascade effects and distributions in the scattering angle. The polarization of emissions from the excited target is calculated successfully.

Abstract:Single-particle resonant states in Ca isotopes are studied systematically by real stabilization method (RSM) in coordinate space within the framework of the self-consistent relativistic mean field (RMF) theory. Phase shifts are obtained by scattering phase shift method. The resonant parameters (the energies, widths) are extracted by fitting energy and phase shift. Wave functions of resonances are obtained by matching conditions of bound and scattering states. Taking 60 Ca as an example, results are compared with corresponding results obtained from the analytic continuation in the coupling constant approach and the scattering phase shift method. Satisfied agreements are found. The rules of resonant parameters changing in Ca isotopes are also analyzed.
Electron Impact Excitation for P-Like Ni Xiv

Abstract:In this paper we report the calculations on effective collision strengths for electron impact excitations among the 41 levels of 3s(2)3p(3), 3s3p(4) and 3s(2)3p(2)3d configurations in Ni XIV. The Dirac R-matrix theory and the relativistic distorted-wave method in conjunction with isolated resonance approximation are adopted for the calculations. Detailed comparisons between the results obtained from the above two methods show that the independent process and isolated resonance approximation using distorted waves can describe the near threshold resonances reasonably well for most transitions in Ni XIV, though channel-coupling effects are found to be important for weak transitions. Resonances enlarge significantly the effective collision strengths for many transitions, even by over two orders of magnitude.

Abstract:The ionization process due to collision of He2+ with C5+(1s) is investigated using a continuum-distorted-wave eikonal-initial-state approximation. Total, single-, and double-differential cross sections are presented for collision energies from 30 keV/u to 10 MeV/u. A good agreement is obtained between the current total cross section and the previous predictions. The ionization mechanism of electron capture to the projectile continuum (ECC) is found to be important in the lower collision energy range, whose contributions to the total cross section are evaluated to be approximately 12, 9, and 7% for the projectile energies of 125 keV/u,500 keV/u, and 1 MeV/u respectively. These large ECC contributions could be interpreted by the velocity matching between the projectile ion and the electron initially bound to the target.
Unexpectedly large difference of the electron density at the nucleus in the 4p $^2$P$_{1/2,3/2}$ fine-structure doublet of Ca$^+$

Abstract:We measured the isotope shift in the $^2$S$_{1/2}$-$^2$P$_{3/2}$ (D2) transition in singly-ionized calcium ions using photon recoil spectroscopy. The high accuracy of the technique enables us to resolve the difference between the isotope shifts of this transition to the previously measured isotopic shifts of the $^2$S$_{1/2}$-$^2$P$_{1/2}$ (D1) line. This so-called splitting isotope shift is extracted and exhibits a clear signature of field shift contributions. From the data we were able to extract the small difference of the field shift coefficient and mass shifts between the two transitions with high accuracy. This J-dependence is of relativistic origin and can be used to benchmark atomic structure calculations. As a first step, we use several ab initio atomic structure calculation methods to provide more accurate values for the field shift constants and their ratio. Remarkably, the high-accuracy value for the ratio of the field shift constants extracted from the experimental data is larger than all available theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Close-coupling calculations are performed on the photodetachments of the metastable ${\mathrm{nsnp}}^{2}$ ${}^{4}P$ states of the negative beryllium $(n=2),$ magnesium $(n=3),$ and calcium $(n=4)$ ions by using the R-matrix method. The calculations are carried out with the consideration of excitations of one electron from core. The results show that this effect is much more important for ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ than for ${\mathrm{Be}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${\mathrm{Mg}}^{\ensuremath{-}}.$ For ${\mathrm{Be}}^{\ensuremath{-}},$ the total and partial cross sections are obtained from the threshold to a photon energy of 0.5 Ry. The calculated total cross section exhibits two ${}^{4}{P}^{o}$ Feshbach resonances and one ${}^{4}{D}^{o}$ shape resonance. Close agreement is found with the available theoretical calculations and the only experimental datum of Pegg and co-workers [Phys. Rev. A 50, 3861 (1994)]. For the ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${\mathrm{Mg}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ions, the total and partial cross sections are calculated from the threshold to a photon energy of 0.25 Ry. For the ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ion, the resonances are found for both ${}^{4}{P}^{o}$ and ${}^{4}{D}^{o}$ symmetries just below the ${}^{3}D$ threshold. For the ${\mathrm{Mg}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ion, only a ${}^{4}{P}^{o}$ resonance is predicted. No rapid increase associated with the opening of the $4s5s{ }^{3}S$ channel is found in the total cross section of ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{\ensuremath{-}}.$ The rapid increase of the photodetachment cross section of ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ in the experiment by Hanstorp et al. [D. Hanstorp et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 368 (1989)] should not be attributed to the ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{(4s4p}^{2}{}^{4}P)+h\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}\mathrm{Ca}(4s5s{}^{3}S)+kp$ ionization process. This result is consistent with the conclusion of Petrunin and co-workers [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 744 (1996)] that there was no ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ${(4s4p}^{2}{}^{4}P)$ ions observed by Hanstorp et al.
Observation of vibrational overtones by single molecule resonant photodissociation

Abstract:Molecular ions can be held in a chain of laser-cooled atomic ions by sympathetic cooling. This system is ideal for performing high-precision molecular spectroscopy with applications in astrochemistry and fundamental physics. Here we show that this same system can be coupled with a broadband laser to discover new molecular transitions. We use three-ion chains of Ca$^{+}$ and CaH$^{+}$ to observe vibrational transitions via resonance enhanced multiphoton dissociation detected by Ca$^{+}$ fluorescence. Based on theoretical calculations, we assign the observed peaks to the transition from the ground vibrational state, $\nu=0$, to $\nu=9$ and $\nu=10$. Our method allows us to track single molecular events, and it can be extended to work with any molecule by using normal mode frequency shifts to detect the dissociation. This survey spectroscopy serves as a bridge to the precision spectroscopy required for molecular ion control.

Abstract:Resonant vibrational and rotation-vibration excitation cross sections for electron-CO scattering are calculated in the 0-10 eV energy range for all 81 vibrational states of CO, assuming that the excitation occur via the 2{\Pi} shape resonance. Static exchange plus polarization calculations performed using the R-matrix method are used to estimate resonance positions and widths as functions of internuclear separation. The effects of nuclear motion are considered using a local complex potential model. Good agreement is obtained with available experimental data on excitation from the vibrational ground state. Excitation rates and cross sections are provided as a functions of the initial CO vibrational state for all ground state vibrational levels.

The Low-Lying Shape Resonances in Low-Energy Electron-Scattering with Be, Mg and Ca Atoms

Abstract:Static exchange (plus correlation-polarisation potential) calculations are performed for elastic low-energy electron scattering from Be, Mg and Ca atoms with attention to the low lying 2P and 2D shape resonances. The correlation potentials are calculated with and without a scaling factor. The scaling factor is adjustable as the alpha parameter in the X alpha theory, and is adjusted to produce the 2P resonance energy of e-Mg scattering in agreement with the experiment. The predictions with the parameter-free correlation-polarisation potential are a 2P resonance at 0.15 eV with width of 0.19 eV for Be, a 2P resonance at 0.065 eV with width of 0.05 eV for Mg and a 2D resonance at 1.5 eV for Ca with width of 3.0 eV. The 2P resonances of Be and Mg and the 2D resonance of Ca are produced at 0.24 eV, 0.14 eV and 1.75 eV with widths of 0.33 eV, 0.17 eV and 3.2 eV respectively, by using the scaled correlation potential. No 2P resonances are produced in the calculations for e-Ca scattering using either the parameter-free or scaled correlation potential, i.e. the authors give evidence for the existence of a stable negative ion of Ca in the 4s24p 2P state by using the theory used for electron scattering.

Abstract:Employing both the Dirac R-matrix and the relativistic distorted wave with independent process and isolated resonance approaches, we report resonance enhanced electron impact excitation data (specifically, effective collision strengths) among the lowest 41 levels from the n = 3 configurations of Cu XV. The results show that the latter approach can obtain resonance contributions reasonably well for most excitations of Cu XV, though a comparison between the two approaches shows that the close-coupling effects are truly significant for rather weak excitations, especially for two-electron excitations from the 3s3p(4) to 3s(2)3p(2)3d configuration. Resonance contributions are significant (more than two orders of magnitude) for many excitations and dramatically influence the line intensity ratios associated with density diagnostics.
Precise Determination of Excited State Rotational Constants and Black-Body Thermometry in Coulomb Crystals of Ca$^+$ and CaH$^+$

Abstract:We present high-resolution rovibronic spectroscopy of calcium monohydride molecular ions (CaH$^+$) co-trapped in a Coulomb crystal with calcium ions ($^{40}$Ca$^+$), focusing on rotational transitions in the $|X^1\Sigma^+, \nu" = 0> \rightarrow |A^1\Sigma^+, \nu' = 2>$ manifold. By resolving individual P and R branch transitions with record precision and using Fortrat analysis, we extract key spectroscopic constants for the excited state $|A^1\Sigma^+, \nu' = 2>$, specifically, the band origin, the rotational constant, and the centrifugal correction. Additionally, we demonstrate the application of high-resolution rotational spectroscopy of CaH$^+$ presented here as an in-situ probe of local environmental temperature. We correlate the relative amplitudes of the observed transitions to the underlying thermalized ground-state rotational population distribution and extract the black-body radiation (BBR) temperature.

Deciphering core-exciton dynamics in CaF$_2$ with attosecond spectroscopy

Abstract:Core excitons in solids have garnered increasing interest, yet their behavior and decay mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we use attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption spectroscopy, performed with a broadband 25-45 eV sub-fs XUV pump pulse and a 500-1000 nm sub 5 fs near-infrared (NIR) supercontinuum probe pulse to monitor the excitation, dynamics, and decay of core excitons in CaF$_2$ at the Ca$^{2+}$ M$_{2,3}$ edge. The XUV pulses are used to excite core excitons in CaF$_2$ based around the Ca$^{2+}$ and the polarization of the medium is subsequently perturbed by the time-delayed NIR pulses to measure the spectral changes and decays. A number of features are identified in the transient absorption spectrum, which suggest transfer between excitonic states, Stark shifts, and the emergence of light-induced states. We find that various core excitons identified exhibit coherence lifetimes spanning 3-7 fs. Furthermore, a NIR-intensity-dependent analysis finds a negative correlation with the coherence lifetime of various identified excitonic features, supporting a phonon-mediated mechanism as responsible for the core exciton decoherence. We present a computational band structure projection analysis strategy to estimate the orbital structure of the core excitons and determine which core excitonic transitions should be allowed by selection rules with the probe beam. This strategy is found to successfully describe the observed spectroscopic data. The outlined joint spectroscopic and computational investigation of core excitons is a powerful technique that explains the complex behavior of core excitons in solid-state materials.

Abstract:We present measurements of the charge-exchange reaction rate between neutral sodium (Na) and ionized calcium (\ce{Ca+}) in a hybrid atom-ion trap, which is comprised of a Na magneto-optical trap concentric with a linear Paul trap. Once the Na and \ce{Ca+} are co-trapped, the reaction rate is measured by continuously quenching the reaction product \ce{Na+} from the ion trap, and then destructively measuring the decay of the remaining ion population. The reactants' electronic state and temperature are experimentally controlled, allowing us to determine the four individual reaction-rates between $\text{Na}[\text{S~or~P}]$ and $\text{Ca}^+[\text{S~or~D}]$ at different collision energies. With the exception of the largest reaction-rate channel ($\text{Na}[\text{S}]+\text{Ca}^+[\text{D}]$), our rates agree with classical Langevin rate limit. We have also found evidence of reactant collision-energy thresholds associated with two of the four entrance-channels.
