Abstract:In this study, a Sodium alginate-g-poly (acrylamide-clay)/TiO 2 hydrogel nanocomposite [SA-g-p(AM-Bn)/TiO 2 ] was synthesized using the biopolymer sodium alginate (SA), acrylamide (AM), and bentonite clay (Bn) as hybrid materials embedded with titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) for the removal of toxic Congo Red (CR) dye from an aqueous solution. The [SA-g-p(AM-Bn)/TiO 2 ] nanocomposite has been described on the basis of thermal stability, morphological analysis, estimation of functional group, and crystalline/amorphous character by TGA, EFSEM/EDX, TEM, FT-IR, and XRD analysis, respectively. The effects of operational parameters toward the CR dye adsorption on [SA-g-p(AM-Bn)/TiO 2 ], including contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, initial pH, and temperature were investigated. The maximum adsorption efficiency was found to be 185.12 mg/g for [SA-g-p(AM-Bn)/TiO 2 ] in 100 mg/L of solution CR at pH 6.0 within 1 h. The equilibrium isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics parameters of adsorption were examined, and results showed that the isotherm fitted the Freundlich model and the kinetics adsorption model of CR followed pseudo-first-order, thus indicating physisorption of anionic-CR onto the sorbent due to the development of an electrostatic attraction bond. Thermodynamic parameters for [SA-g-p(AM-Bn)/TiO 2 ] have values (ΔG and ΔH) reflecting the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption processes. Moreover, [SA-g-p(AM-Bn)/TiO 2 ] presented outstanding excellent reusability and recyclability with a relatively best removal percentage as compared to [SA-g-p(AM-Bn)] and suggested their applicability towards the textile industry and water purification purposes.

Abstract:This study involves the fabrication of a novel, sustainable, and economically viable adsorbent ceria/rice flour/montmorillonite nanocomposite (Ce-R-MMT) for the decontamination of Cr( VI ) and coomassie brilliant blue (CBB) from the aquatic phase. The structural characteristics and sorption interaction was elucidated via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The sorption behavior was strategized systematically via batch experiments, which include adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial CBB concentration and initial solution pH, equilibrium, and kinetic curves. The Freundlich model best illustrated the equilibrium data implying the multilayer adsorption of CBB and Cr( VI ) onto the heterogeneous surface of the prepared nanocomposite. Pseudo-second order appropriated the kinetics of the process. Diffusion modelling suggested that intraparticle and liquid film diffusion models cooperatively governed the diffusion of probed pollutants. Thermodynamic parameters implied the adsorption process to be feasible and exothermic. The binary study showed an antagonistic effect as R value was <1. Electrostatic interaction was responsible for the uptake of both pollutants by the nanocomposite. The sequestration potentiality assured by sorption capacity for CBB (713.513 mg g −1 ) and Cr( VI ) (182.037 mg g −1 ) and regeneration ability up to 3 consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles conferred Ce-R-MMT to be a promising sorbent for the sequestration of CBB and Cr( VI ).
Synthesis of amidoximated polyacrylonitrile fibers and its use as adsorbent for Cr (VI) ions removal from aqueous solutions

Abstract:Functionalized fibers, especially polyacrylonitrile fibers (PANF), have attracted wide interest as an effective and economical material for environment and water protection. In this study, polyacrylonitrile fibers modified with hydroxylamine hydrochloride were used as an adsorbent to remove hexavalent chromium ions from aqueous solutions. The novelty of the present study compared to the literature is the functionalization of polyacrylonitrile fibers surface by optimizing cost and energy while achieving a yield fast removal rate and high adsorption capacity of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solutions. The amidoximated polyacrylonitrile fibers were characterized using Fourier Transform InfraRed spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results confirmed the success of polyacrylonitrile fibers modification. The adsorption capacity was evaluated by investigating the effect of initial pH solution ranging from 2.0 to 7.0, the adsorbent dose varied from 0.05 to 0.25 g, the initial Cr (VI) concentration range was (5–70 mg g−1), the temperature varied from 5 to 60°C, and the contact time ranged from 0 to 180 min. We have used the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models to describe the equilibrium sorption data. The maximum adsorption capacity estimated using the Langmuir model reached 32. 57 mg g−1 under optimal conditions. The thermodynamic parameters (ΔG, ΔH, and ΔS) were also determined. In addition, the adsorbent showed a desorption rate of Cr (VI) up to 92% with 0.5 mol of NaOH, which can be reused for three adsorption–desorption cycles. The overall data showed the efficiency of amidoximated polyacrylonitrile fibers in removing Cr (VI) from aqueous solutions. © 2019 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 2019

Abstract:By polymerizing acrylonitrile in the presence of ammonium persulfate as an initiator and Pterocladia capillacea-activated carbon (P-AC) as a filler, a composite material polyacrylonitrile/Pterocladia capillacea-activated carbon (PAN/P- AC) was developed. By reacting hydroxylamine with the composite's nitrile groups, the prepared composite was functionalized by amidoximation. FTIR spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis were all applied to thoroughly characterize the fabricated adsorbent. For the treatment of Cr(VI) ions from synthetic solutions, the adsorption properties of amidoximated polyacrylonitrile/Pterocladia capillacea-activated carbon (PAO/P-AC) were investigated. The pH effect, uptake kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and thermodynamics studies were used to characterize adsorption properties. As a kinetic model analysis, the data confirmed that the pseudo-second-order rate equation matched well the adsorption process. With coefficients of determination (R2) of 0.9998, the Tempkin isotherm model had the lowest error, suggesting that it is the best fitted model to describe this adsorption mechanism. Thermodynamic parameters demonstrated that Cr(VI) adsorption was endothermic.

Facile synthesis of anthranilic acid based dual functionalized novel hyper cross-linked polymer for promising CO2 capture and efficient Cr3+ adsorption

Abstract:A novel hyper cross-linked polymer of 2-Aminobenzoic acid (HCP-AA) is synthesized for the adsorption of Cr3+ and CO2. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of HCP-AA is 615 m2 g-1. HCP-AA of particle size 0.5 nm showed maximum adsorption of Cr3+ for lab prepared wastewater (93%) while it was 88% for real industrial wastewater. It is might be due to electrostatic interactions, cation-π interactions, lone pair interactions and cation exchange at pH 7; contact time of 8 min; adsorbent dose 0.8 g. The adsorption capacity was calculated 52.63 mg g-1 for chromium metal ions at optimum conditions. Freundlich isotherm studies R2 = 0.9273 value is the best fit and follows pseudo second order kinetic model (R2 = 0.979). The adsorption is found non-spontaneous and exothermic through thermodynamic calculations like Gibbs free energy (ΔG), enthalpy change (ΔH) and entropy change (ΔS) were 6.58 kJ mol-1, - 60.91 kJ mol-1 and - 45.79 kJ mol-1 K-1, respectively. The CO2 adsorption capacity of HCP-AA is 1.39 mmol/g with quantity of 31.1 cm3/g (6.1 wt%) at 273Kwhile at 298 K adsorption capacity is 1.12 mmol/g with quantity 25.2 cm3/g (5 wt%). Overall, study suggests that carboxyl (-COOH) and amino (-NH2) groups may be actively enhancing the adsorption capacity of HCP-AA for Cr3+ and CO2.

Abstract:Aiming at dealing with organic and inorganic pollutants dissolved in aquatic environments, we introduce self-assembled fluorescent nanocomposite hydrogel based on a binary polysaccharide network (xanthan gum/chitosan) embedding nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots not only as a hybrid solid optical sensor for detecting Cr(VI) ions but also to remove anionically charged contaminants Cr(VI) and methyl orange (MO) by acting as an adsorbent. This fluorescent nanocomposite achieved a detection limit of 0.29 μM when used to detect Cr(VI) and demonstrated a fluorescence quantum yield of 59.7 %. Several factors contributed to the effectiveness of the adsorption of Cr(VI) and MO in batch studies, including the solution pH, dosage of the adsorbent, temperature, initial contamination level, and contact time. Experimental results showed 456 mg/g maximum adsorption capacity at pH 4 for MO compared to 291 mg/g at pH 2 for Cr(VI) at 25 °C. In addition to conforming to Langmuir's model, Cr(VI) and MO's adsorption kinetics closely matched pseudo-second-order. Using thermodynamic parameters, the results indicate that Cr(VI) and MO adsorb spontaneously and exothermically. Recycling spent adsorbent for Cr(VI) and MO using NaOH at 0.1 M was possible; the respective adsorption efficiency remained at approximately 82.2 % and 83 % after the fifth regeneration cycle.
Enhancing Removal of Cr(VI), Pb2+, and Cu2+ from Aqueous Solutions Using Amino-Functionalized Cellulose Nanocrystal

Abstract:In this work, the amino-functionalized cellulose nanocrystal (ACNC) was prepared using a green route and applied as a biosorbent for adsorption of Cr(VI), Pb2+, and Cu2+ from aqueous solutions. CNC was firstly oxidized by sodium periodate to yield the dialdehyde nanocellulose (DACNC). Then, DACNC reacted with diethylenetriamine (DETA) to obtain amino-functionalized nanocellulose (ACNC) through a Schiff base reaction. The properties of DACNC and ACNC were characterized by using elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Kaiser test, atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and zeta potential measurement. The presence of free amino groups was evidenced by the FT-IR results and Kaiser test. ACNCs exhibited an amphoteric nature with isoelectric points between pH 8 and 9. After the chemical modification, the cellulose I polymorph of nanocellulose remained, while the crystallinity decreased. The adsorption behavior of ACNC was investigated for the removal of Cr(VI), Pb2+, and Cu2+ in aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacities were obtained at pH 2 for Cr(VI) and pH 6 for Cu2+ and Pb2+, respectively. The adsorption all followed pseudo second-order kinetics and Sips adsorption isotherms. The estimated adsorption capacities for Cr(VI), Pb2+, and Cu2+ were 70.503, 54.115, and 49.600 mg/g, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we compare the electrical properties of Ultra Thin Buried Oxide (UTBOX) Fully Depleted Silicon On Insulator (FD-SOI) MOS devices for rotated and not rotated substrate with different gate lengths. We found a significant performance enhancement on FD-SOI PMOSFETs as expected, while keeping a good control of short channel effects. Surprisingly, to a lower extent, an improvement is also found for NMOS devices. We have also studied the carrier mobility degradation as a function of temperature and we point out the contribution of different mechanisms that reduce the mobility such as impurity Coulomb scattering, phonons and neutral defects as a function gate length. We find that there is no significant effect of rotated substrate on the mobility degradation. All these results are discussed and possible explanations are also given.

Abstract:This study involves the preparation of sodium alginate poly grafted (fumaric acid-polyacrylic acid)/graphene oxide, SA-g-p(FA-AA)/GO hydrogel to explore its potential as a promising adsorbent for water treatment mainly chromium (VI) and lead (II) removal. Prepared adsorbent was characterized by FTIR, TGA, XRD, FESEM, and TEM techniques for exploring the chemical structure, thermal stability, crystallography, surface area and morphology, as well as pore size and distribution of SA-g-p(FA-AA)/GO, respectively. The average size of the prepared nanoparticles was observed to be 78.48 nm. The TEM images exhibit a predominantly spherical shape and heterogeneous. Effect of different physiochemical parameters such as pH, temperature, adsorbent dosage, and contact time was explored for maximum metal adsorption. The results of the study revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity of SA-g-p(FA-AA)/GO (0.045 mg g −1 for Cr (VI) and 22.371 mg g −1 for Pb (II)) was achieved under optimized conditions, i.e., adsorbent dose of 0.05 g at 25 °C for pH of 2, 4.5 when contact time of 5 and 100 min was used for Cr(VI) and Pb(II), respectively. Data fits best to the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation revealing the multilayer adsorption of Cr (VI) and Pb (II) ions on the heterogeneous adsorbent surface. Thermodynamically, the process of Cr (VI) and Pb (II) adsorption was non-spontaneous, exothermic and feasible revealing the potential of the prepared adsorbent to be used as an efficient adsorbent for metal removal.

Abstract:Contamination of industrial and dietary water with Cr (VI) ions is known as a global concern. Industrial wastes containing elevated Cr (VI) concentration hazards and harmful to people and animals, if inappropriately treated. Consequently, in the current research, a novel nanocomposite of activated nanobentonite@cobalt ferrite@carboxymethylcellulose (ANB@CoFe 2 O 4 @CMC) is generated and characterized. Several characterization techniques were employed to confirm the structure of as-prepared ANB@CoFe 2 O 4 @CMC. The mean particle size range of this nanocomposite was found to be 22.5–26.2 nm. Through batch adsorption assessments, ANB@CoFe 2 O 4 @CMC was employed and optimized to remove Cr (VI) ions from aquatic medium providing optimum conditions of pH 2.0, 25–30 min shaking time, 25 mg nanocomposite dosage at 25 °C reaction temperature. Freundlich model was extremely relevant via linear and nonlinear expression. Thermodynamic investigations were investigated to conclude that both exothermal and spontaneously tendencies in governing Cr (VI) adsorptive uptake. The ANB@CoFe 2 O 4 @CMC was remarkably stable after five subsequent runs of regenerating and recycling. This investigation displayed the potential of ANB@CoFe 2 O 4 @CMC as a powerful nanocomposite material for Cr (VI) recovery from diverse waters via a microcolum technique, exhibiting uptake values up to 87.9–95.8 %. As a result, the evaluated ANB@CoFe 2 O 4 @CMC could be successfully illustrated as superior material for effective multi-uptake Cr (VI) ions from water.

Abstract:In this work, we tailor facile hydrogels nanocomposite (HNC) based on sustainable karaya gum for water treatment. Karaya gum crosslink poly(acrylamide-co-acrylonitrile) @ silver nanoparticle (KG-cl-P(AAm-co-AN)@AgNPs) HNC were made by an aqueous free radical in situ crosslink copolymerization of acrylamide (AAm) and acrylic acid (AA) in aqueous solution of KG-stabilized AgNPs. FTIR, XRD, DTA-TGA, SEM, and TEM were used to characterize HNC. The hydrogels' swelling, diffusion, and network characteristics were investigated. The removal efficiency of HNC was found to be 99% at pH 8 for a crystal violet (CV), dose of 0.02 g after 1 h. Dye adsorption by these hydrogels was also investigated in terms of isotherms, and kinetics. The dye's exceptionally high adsorption capacity on HNC for CV removal is explained by H-bonding interactions, as well as dipole-dipole and electrostatic interactions between anionic adsorbent and cationic dye molecules (Qmax, 1000 mg/g). The HNC can be regenerated with 0.1 M HCl and reused at least 10 times maintaining over 68% dye removal. The loading of AgNPs into the polymeric matrix of KG-cl-P(AAm-co-AN) significantly increases the removal percentage of CV dye from its aqueous solution, according to this study.

Abstract:is a key technology for heavy metals removal from industrial effluents. The use of adsorbent polymers is considered to be an attractive solution for wastewater treatment due to their high selectivity for certain heavy metals. Through the current study, an adsorptive polyacrylonitrile based hydrogel blend was used to examine heavy metals removal in simulated effluents incorporating chromium and nickel. Moreover, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) in conjunction to an Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) were used for characterization of the polymeric blend structure. Finally, for surface evaluation, the specific surface area and the pore size distribution Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis techniques were used together with electrical conductivity measurements The obtained results from FTIR showed the appearance of the original bands of raw materials (polyacrylonitrile (PAN), polyvinyl alcohol and polyaniline (PAni) and the change of the peaks position confirmed the hydrolysis and combination of starting materials into the polymeric blend. Surface morphology studies showed that this gel has porous surface with an average pore size and surface area of 0.73 nm and 17.3 m2/g, respectively. Moreover, Electrical conductivity measurements indicated the presence of PAni in the polymeric blend assisted in the increase in conductivity of PAN. Finally, the different parameters of the polymeric hydrogel blend were investigated through swelling water ratio (SWR) and conventional adsorption processes at different operating conditions such as; initial salt concentration, pH and contact time. The maximum chromium adsorption results were (12.44 mg/g for 10 mg/L initial salt concentration), (10.46 mg/g for 5.5 pH) and (4.91 mg/g for 1 hr. contact time). Whereas, the maximum nickel adsorption was (7.67 mg/g for 20 mg/L initial salt concentration), (7.57 mg/g for 7 pH) and (6 mg/g for 2 hrs. contact time).

Abstract:Release of industrial effluents comprising dyes in water bodies is one of the foremost causes of water pollution. Therefore, the proper and proficient treatment of these dyes contaminated left-over material before their release is crucial. Herein, an eco-friendly biological macromolecule Gum-Acacia (GA) integrated Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles composite hydrogel was manufactured via co-precipitation technique for effective adsorption of Congo red (CR) dye existing in water bodies. The as-prepared magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel was characterized by FTIR, XRD, EDX, VSM, SEM, and BET techniques. These studies discovered the fruitful fabrication of biodegradable magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel possessing porous structure with large surface area (21.78 m 2 /g) and enough saturated magnetization value (24.5 emu/g) for the efficient elimination of CR. The magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel showed higher adsorption (96.3%) of CR as compared to pristine Fe 3 O 4 (45%) in 50 min at pH 6 with 0.02 g of adsorbent and 100 ppm CR. The data obtained from the adsorption of CR over GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel have a linear relationship, following the pseudo second-order kinetic model (R 2 =0.990) and Freundlich adsorption isotherm model (R 2 =0.983). The evaluated factors of thermodynamic recommended that the experiments were favourable, spontaneous, and exothermic in nature. In addition, the biodegradable magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel also exhibited excellent desorption as well as recyclability owing to its amazing robust magnetic nature. What is more, the GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel reserved the same % adsorption proficiency (>96.3%) up to several repeated rounds, proving its potential applicability for water purgative at domestic plus industrial level.
Appraisal of the adsorption potential of novel modified gellan gum nanocomposite for the confiscation of methylene blue and malachite green

Abstract:In the present investigation a novel, environmentally affable and economical, modified gellan gum nanocomposite (MAA-g-GG/Ppy/MMT) was fabricated via free-radical polymerization for the liquid-phase mitigation of Methylene blue (MB) and Malachite green (MG) dyes. The innovation of this work is substantiated by the intentional combination of diverse materials, the strategic incorporation of polypyrrole for enhanced adsorption, and the thoughtful addition of MMT as a nanofiller to address mechanical strength and improve adsorption capacity. The physico-chemical facets of MAA-g-GG/Ppy/MMT and its interaction with the dye molecules were elucidated using FT-IR, SEM-EDX, BET, TEM, and XRD techniques. The optimum conditions for the sorption of MB and MG were deemed to be dosage (1.2 g/L for both dyes), contact time (50 min for both dyes), initial MG/MB concentration (MB = 40 mg/L & MG = 30 mg/L), and pH (MB = 10 & MG = 7). The Freundlich isotherm was identified as the most suitable model, as evidenced by the highest R 2 value (∼0.999), indicating multilayer adsorption. The pseudo second-order model appraised the kinetic data. Thermodynamic findings revealed the adsorption process to be spontaneous, viable and exothermic which was ascertained by negative ∆H ⸰ values (−22.8 kJ/mol for MB and −18.3 kJ/mol for MG). The substantial Langmuir adsorption capacity ( Q m : MG =185.185; MB = 344.827) can be ascribed to the reason for strong interactions between MAA-g-GG/Ppy/MMT and dyes. The high reliability of MAA-g-GG/Ppy/MMT was determined by the regeneration studies that worked up to four cycles for both dyes. The real water (distilled water, tap water, and river water) samples spiked with MG/MB demonstrated a substantial uptake of dyes (>85 %) and the marginal influence of ionic strength on the adsorptive potential of MAA-g-GG/Ppy/MMT validated its efficacy for the decontamination of real effluents. The forces of attraction between the dyes and MAA-g-GG/Ppy/MMT included van der Waals, electrostatic forces of attraction, and π-π interaction. This green, economical, and viable MAA-g-GG/Ppy/MMT will prove to be an efficient adsorbent for the decontamination process of sequestration of dyes to achieve a sustainable environment.

Removal of Cr(VI) from Wastewater Using Acrylonitrile Grafted Cellulose Extracted from Sugarcane Bagasse

Abstract:A highly efficient low-cost adsorbent was prepared using raw and chemically modified cellulose isolated from sugarcane bagasse for decontamination of Cr(VI) from wastewater. First, cellulose pulp was isolated from sugarcane bagasse by subjecting it to acid hydrolysis, alkaline hydrolysis and bleaching with sodium chlorate (NaClO3). Then, the bleached cellulose pulp was chemically modified with acrylonitrile monomer in the presence Fenton's reagent (Fe+2/H2O2) to carry out grafting of acrylonitrile onto cellulose by atom transfer radical polymerization. The developed adsorbent (acrylonitrile grafted cellulose) was analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Both raw cellulose and acrylonitrile grafted cellulose were used for chromium removal from wastewater. The effects of metal ion concentration, pH, adsorbent dose and time were studied, and their values were optimized. The optimum conditions for the adsorption of Cr(VI) onto raw and chemically modified cellulose were: metal ion concentration: 50 ppm, adsorbent dose: 1 g, pH: 6, and time: 60 min. The maximum efficiencies of 73% and 94% and adsorption capacities of 125.95 mg/g and 267.93 mg/g were achieved for raw and acrylonitrile grafted cellulose, respectively. High removal efficiency was achieved, owing to high surface area of 79.92 m2/g and functional active binding cites on grafted cellulose. Isotherm and kinetics studies show that the experimental data were fully fitted by the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo first-order model. The adsorbent (acrylonitrile grafted cellulose) was regenerated using three different types of regenerating reagents and reused thirty times, and there was negligible decrease (19%) in removal efficiency after using it for 30 times. Hence, it is anticipated that acrylonitrile could be utilized as potential candidate material for commercial scale Cr(VI) removal from wastewater.

Abstract:The thermo-responsive swelling-shrinking behaviour of the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogels under the effect of temperature change have mechanistic function upon controlling the uptake and release of Cr3+ ions by the hydrogel networks. In this study, acrylic acid (AA) was co-polymerized with PNIPAM onto the silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to form thermo-magneto-responsive (PNIPAM-co-AA)-silica-PVP-MNPs composite hydrogels with increased density of Cr3+ binding groups. Its temperature-manipulated adsorption-desorption efficiency as well as their magnetic phase separability were investigated. Chromium-loaded hydrogels shown apparent phase separation under influence of low gradient magnetic field. Desorption of Cr3+ gradually predominated as temperature increased from 298 K to 323 K. Under high initial Cr3+ concentration whereby physical adsorption is prevailing, the re-uptake of Cr3+ occurred when the solution being cooled down to 298 K. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetic analysis revealed that the adsorption of Cr3+ by (PNIPAM-co-AA)-silica-PVP-MNPs hydrogels was governed by surface precipitation of Cr3+.

Abstract:A series of hydrogel nanocomposites was fabricated by in situ polymerization of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) in presence of different amounts of (amine- and alkyl-modified) nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC). Modification and nanocomposites properties were proved by different analysis methods such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The new hydrogel nanocomposites were applied for removing methyl orange (MO) used as anionic dye and presented in process water at different pH values. The effects of the fabrication process such as modification and content of NCC, contact time, and pH value on swelling ratio (SR), and equilibrium adsorption kinetics were studied. Results showed that the swelling ratio of PDMAEMA-based nanocomposites varied with the different types of nanoparticles showing the significant effect of the modification process. The MO adsorption into the hydrogel nanocomposites was affected by intermolecular and electrostatic interactions between functional groups of hydrogel and dye. The adsorption capacity decreased at high pH value, and it was significantly affected type of nanoparticles introduced into the hydrogel network. The addition of unmodified NCC did not affect adsorption kinetics significantly. Finally, adsorption kinetics was investigated by pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models where pseudo-first-order model showed the best correlation with experimental results.

Abstract:In this work, microporous nano-activated carbon (MNAC) was prepared from orange peel by chemical activation with zinc chloride (ZnCl2). MNAC has been characterized by FTIR, BET, TGA, TEM, SEM, and EDAX analyses. The fabricated MNAC has 1228.2 m2/g-specific surface area and was considered microporous nano-material. The MNAC has been tested for the adsorption of hexavalent chromium from its aqueous solution. MNAC showed good adsorption behavior towards Cr(VI) ions from aqueous environment. To achieve the optimum condition for the adsorption process, solution pH, time of reaction, adsorbent dose, initial concentration of Cr(VI) ions, and solution temperature have been investigated. The maximum monolayer capacity (133.33 mg/g) of MNAC was achieved at pH 1, 100-min reaction time, and 1.0 g/L adsorbent dosage. The pseudo-second-order model described the kinetics of Cr(VI) ions adsorption (R2 > 0.9972). Isotherm results showed that both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models are applicable to the batch experimental data, with the Langmuir model considered as the most applicable model. Thermodynamic parameters explained that the process of adsorption is appropriate in nature, endothermic, and spontaneous. The thermodynamic parameters, such as Gibb's free energy (∆G°), standard entropy (∆S°), and standard enthalpy changes (∆H°), were estimated. The value of ∆G° was found to be negative for the adsorption of Cr(VI) ions, which confirmed the feasibility and spontaneous probability of the adsorption process.

Abstract:This study focuses on developing and characterizing of fluorescent cellulose-based hydrogelsfor efficient chromium (Cr(VI)) adsorption. For this purpose, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was first surface-modified to achieve solubility using succinic anhydride. Cellulose succinate (CS) subsequently was grafted with a mixture of acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM), while N , N′ -methylene-bis(acrylamide) (MBA) was added as crosslinker to obtain the final grafted and crosslinked hydrogels. To impart fluorescence and sensing capabilities, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were synthesized via a microwave-assisted method using sugarcane bagasse, NaOH, and urea as precursors, and incorporated into the hydrogel. The resulting hydrogels demonstrated effective Cr(VI) adsorption, with optimal performance observed at 10% N–CQD loading. FTIR, SEM, rheological analysis, and TGA were employed for hydrogel characterization, while adsorption kinetics provided insights into the interaction mechanisms with Cr(VI).

Methodical study of chromium (VI) ion adsorption from aqueous solution using low-cost agro-waste material: isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies

Abstract:This study involved preparation and modification of Saccharum officinarium as adsorbent used for the removal of chromium (VI) ions in a batch process. The adsorbent was modified with oxalic acid for improved performance of the adsorbent by increasing the surface area of the adsorbent. Surface morphology of the adsorbents was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), while Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis was carried out before and after the adsorption of Cr (VI) ions to determine the participating functional group in the processes. The optimum adsorption was attained at pH 2 and contact time of 180 min with efficiency of adsorption of 56.7 and 92.6% onto RSO and MSO, respectively. The adsorption capacity increases with increase in initial metal ion concentration of the sorption mixture. The isotherms studies indicate that the experimental data were best fitted to Freundlich, Langmuir, and Sips models with R2 = 0.999 for adsorption of Cr (VI) ions onto raw S. officinarium (RSO) and modified S. officinarium (MSO). The maximum adsorption capacity obtained were 227.27 and 243.90 mg*g-1 while the adsorption energy obtained from D-R were found to be 3.460 and 6.325 kJ*mol-1 onto RSO and MSO, respectively. This revealed that the physiosorption process was favored in interaction of Cr (VI) ions onto both adsorbents. Separation factors obtained showed that the process is favored with increase in initial concentration of the adsorbate. Thermodynamic parameter values obtained showed that the sorption of Cr (VI) ions onto RSO and MSO is feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in nature. The positive value of ΔS° indicates increase in disorderliness of the adsorption process. Kinetic data achieved at different initial concentrations of adsorbate have been analyzed, and the mechanism of the reaction was also studied by intra-particle and Bangham kinetic model. Each of the models was tested with R2 ˃ 0.9, where pseudo-second-order is the best-fitted model and Bangham mechanism only fitted with adsorption of Cr (VI) ions onto RSO. The reusability potential of RSO and MSO contributes to the economic values and reliability of the adsorbents for removal of Cr (VI) ions from aqueous solution.
