Abstract:This paper proposes a framework for rapid seismic risk assessment of bridges using aerial photogrammetric surveys conducted by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). First, the data acquisition process for the photogrammetric 3D reconstruction of an asset and the subsequent procedure for computer-vision-based automatic extraction of visible geometric features are presented. Then, the extracted features are combined in the structural models to perform a seismic risk assessment in terms of capacity-to-demand ratios. Uncertainties are related to the material and geometric hidden variables. Monte Carlo simulation is performed, assuming uniform (uninformed) distributions for the input variables affected by epistemic uncertainty. The ranges of such distributions are estimated based on engineering judgment and knowledge of construction practices. The analysis provides an estimate of the epistemic uncertainties of the capacity-to-demand ratios, with limited available information obtained from UAV aerial photogrammetry. The feasibility and applicability of the proposed framework are demonstrated through a case study of a simply supported bridge in the Italian highway network. The 3D reconstruction process is validated by comparing the aerial survey with a laser scanner survey. The seismic risk of the selected bridge is assessed using the geometric information obtained from the UAV aerial photogrammetric survey. Finally, the paper discusses the applicability of the proposed methodology for bridge management purposes in an automated framework and at network scale.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry has recently become a widespread technique to investigate and monitor the evolution of different types of natural processes. Fluvial geomorphology is one of such fields of application where UAV potentially assumes a key role, since it allows for overcoming the intrinsic limits of satellite and airborne-based optical imagery on one side, and in situ traditional investigations on the other. The main purpose of this paper was to obtain extensive products (digital terrain models (DTMs), orthophotos, and 3D models) in a short time, with low costs and at a high resolution, in order to verify the capability of this technique to analyze the active geomorphic processes on a 12 km long stretch of the French–Italian Roia River at both large and small scales. Two surveys, one year apart from each other, were carried out over the study area and a change detection analysis was performed on the basis of the comparison of the obtained DTMs to point out and characterize both the possible morphologic variations related to fluvial dynamics and modifications in vegetation coverage. The results highlight how the understanding of different fluvial processes may be improved by appropriately exploiting UAV-based products, which can thus represent a low-cost and non-invasive tool to crucially support decisionmakers involved in land management practices.

Abstract:Among the natural risks to which structures and infrastructures are subjected, the action of geohazards is often ignored. Several efforts are required to predict geological effects on the existing built heritage, such as by employing sensor-based systems or by performing periodical visual inspections. Alternatively, novel cost-effective techniques could be used. The paper presents a probabilistic-based approach to evaluate the occurrence of subsidence phenomena affecting existing structures and infrastructures, by combining information provided by multitemporal interferometry via synthetic aperture radar (MTInSAR) data and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry. Given a structure to monitor and a period of observation, the idea consists of retrieving MTInSAR data about the structure and performing UAV flight surveys on the surrounding area at the beginning and end of the considered period. From both surveys, statistical distributions of the spatiotemporal velocities can be processed and evaluated toward a predefined limit state. The obtained results are classified under different scenarios, to reveal the occurrence of possible subsidence phenomena. The proposed methodology was firstly validated on a real landslide (the vertical component was assessed) and, subsequently, was tested on another case for risk prediction, showing a satisfying capacity of providing warnings to employ risk mitigation plans.

Abstract:High-resolution flood monitoring can be achieved relying on multi-temporal analysis of remote sensing SAR data, through the implementation of semi-automated systems. Exploiting a Bayesian inference framework, conditioned probabilities can be estimated for the presence of floodwater at each image location and each acquisition date. We developed a procedure for efficient monitoring of floodwaters from SAR data cubes, which adopts a statistical modelling framework for SAR backscatter time series over normally unflooded areas based on Gaussian processes (GPs), in order to highlight flood events as outliers, causing abrupt variations in the trends. We found that non-parametric time series modelling improves the performances of Bayesian probabilistic inference with respect to state-of-the-art methodologies using, e.g., parametric fits based on periodic functions, by both reducing false detections and increasing true positives. Our approach also exploits ancillary data derived from a digital elevation model, including slopes, normalized heights above nearest drainage (HAND), and SAR imaging parameters such as shadow and layover conditions. It is here tested over an area that includes the so-called Metaponto Coastal Plain (MCP), in the Basilicata region (southern Italy), which is recurrently subject to floods. We illustrate the ability of our system to detect known (although not ground-truthed) and smaller, undocumented inundation events over large areas, and propose some consideration about its prospective use for contexts affected by similar events, over various land cover scenarios and climatic settings.

Abstract:Drainage network efficiency plays a key role in terms of irrigation and control of floods generation in cultivated areas. A crucial aspect to consider in water resource and flood management risk is the assessment of the network storage capacity. The latter can be reduced by the uncontrolled growth of vegetation that can modify the ditch cross-section altering the hydrological response and network functionality. Therefore, the continuous monitoring of the potentially critical areas, where vegetation could obstruct the section, become a fundamental point that can be solved by the advanced in the high-resolution topographic technologies. In the last few years, the exploration of Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry technique in parallel with Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have increased the possibilities for the realisation of rapid, low-cost and very detailed Digital Elevation Models (DEM). The accurate and high-resolution DEM generated by UAV-SfM survey is fundamental to derive geomorphometric features of the agrarian landscape. This research aims to present a flexible and low-cost workflow to generate an accurate and high-resolution UAV-SfM DEM, in a large agrarian area of Taiwan, that can be used to automatically detect the drainage network and to map the vegetation into the ditches through the roughness index. The high roughness index values due to the presence of vegetation in the ditches were identified and compared with corresponding measurements in the field to validate and assess the methodology. The results confirm the effectiveness of the approach used and underline how the developed workflow could provide, on a farm scale and with an unusually high level of detail, useful, rapid and low-cost information to map vegetation obstruction in channel network. This data could become essential for stakeholders to precisely intervene on obstruction points, planning the ditches maintenance, and identify some numerical benchmarks to be included in flood risk models and in the computations of the storage size of the drainage network.

Abstract:The frequency and the accumulation of medium–small flood events can cause severe impacts. In a climate change context, real-time monitoring and a fast risk assessment are needed to support the post-disaster phases. The present work presents a novel methodology that leverages the potential of earth observation data to produce a proof-of-concept for flood vulnerability assessment, serving as the basis for a Map Operational Service for the Lombardy region. The proof-of-concept is related to both flood hazard estimation and vulnerability assessment, considering the evaluation of the potentialities of the synthetic aperture radar data when used to feed a downstream service. Using the city of Pavia (Italy), which was affected by a flood event in November 2019, as a case study, we present an integrated flood impact approach that includes a combination of social and physical parameters. The results contribute to a processing chain designed as a pre-operational service where each data analytic retrieves thematic products to support the exposure and damage estimates based on earth observation-derived hazard products for emergency and recovery responses. Three different satellites covered more than 40 h of the flood's evolution, supporting the great potential of the multi-sensor approach. Therefore, different sensor configurations in terms of spectral bands (X and C bands) and resolutions (from 10 to 1 m) provide a near real-time view of the event. Comparing the results obtained through the three hazard scenarios, a final social and physical Integrated Impact Index is obtained. The added value information leads to the determination of hotspots with which to prioritize effective interventions during emergency and recovery phases, crucial for capturing inherent conditions that allow communities to absorb impacts and cope with a damaging flood event.

Abstract:To mitigate floods and storm surges, coastal communities across the globe are under the pressure of high-cost interventions, such as coastal barriers, jetties, and renourishment projects, especially in areas prone to hurricanes and other natural disturbances. To evaluate the effectiveness of these coastal projects in a timely fashion, this methodology is supported by a Geographic Information System that is instaneously fed by regional and local data obtained shortly (24 h) after the disturbance event. Our study assesses the application of 3D models based on aerophotogrammetry from a Phantom 4 RTK drone, following a methodological flowchart with three phases. The Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) based on aerophotogrammetry obtained from a Phantom 4 RTK drone presented a low margin of error (± 5 cm) to dispense Ground Control Points. This technique enables a rapid assessment of inaccessible coastal areas due, for instance, to hurricane impacts. Evaluation of DEMs before and after the disturbance event allows quantifying the magnitudes of shoreline retreat, storm surges, difference in coastal sedimentary volumes, and identifying areas where erosion and sediment accretion occur. Orthomosaics permit the individualization and quantification of changes in vegetation units/geomorphological areas and damages to urban and coastal infrastructure. Our experience monitoring coastal dynamics in North and South America during the last decade indicates that this methodology provides an essential data flow for short and long-term decision-making regarding strategies to mitigate disaster impacts.•Permanent and regional monitoring with spatial-temporal analysis based on satellite/aerial images and lidar data prior to the event.•Local DEMs based on drone aerophotogrammetry after the event.•Integration of regional and local planialtimetric/environmental data.

Abstract:Floods are among the most devastating natural hazards in the world, causing the largest percentage of deaths and property damage. The impact of floods can be mitigated with an adequate knowledge of the territory, which makes it possible to better organize prevention plans with an appropriate analysis of the risk areas, which allows the management of relief efforts quickly and adequately. This work presents a methodology for mapping and monitoring the areas affected by floods and landslides by remote sensing: the correct representation and full interpretation of the territory matrix are essential for quality and sustainability design. In this paper, we used tools and technology that allow us to analyze and visualize the landscape evolution. The calibration of the method was performed on the events that took place in Calabria, in Southern Italy, on 12 August 2015. The proposed methodology concerned the planning of acquisition flights, the selection and setting of the sensors used, and the processing and post-processing of the data collected through the application of algorithms used for data manipulation and interpretation. The process of recognizing the areas with deposits of debris through the spectral signature was carried out using similarity criteria relating to hyperspectral data. The results obtained recommend the adoption of this methodology to deal with emergencies due to flood events.

Abstract:Lakes play an important role in providing various ecosystem services. However, stressors such as climate change, land use, or land-cover change threaten the ecological functions of lakes. National and international legislations address these threats and establish consistent, long-term monitoring schemes. Remote sensing techniques based on the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) have recently been demonstrated to provide accurate and low-cost spatio-temporal views for the assessment of the ecological status of aquatic ecosystems and the identification of areas at risk of contamination. Few studies have been carried out so far on the employment of these tools in the monitoring of lakes. Therefore, high-resolution UAV surveys were used to analyse and evaluate natural and anthropogenic impacts on the habitat status of a volcanic lake in a protected area. Five UAV flights took place during a year-long cycle (November 2020 to November 2021) in a volcanic lake located in southern Italy. For each flight performance, an orthomosaic of georeferenced RGB images was obtained, and the different features of interest were monitored and quantified using automated processing in a GIS environment. The UAV images made it possible not only to estimate the flooded shores but also to detect the impact of human-made structures and infrastructures on the lagoon environment. It has been possible to observe how the rapid changes in lake-water level have led to the submersion of about 90.000 m2 of terrain in winter, causing the fragmentation and degradation of habitats, while the connectivity of the natural ecosystem has been threatened by the presence of the road around the lake. The proposed methodology is rather simple and easily replicable by decision makers and local administrators and can be useful for choosing the best restoration interventions.

Abstract:Floods cause fatalities and considerable economic damage to infrastructures and settlements, besides impacting fluvial-geomorphic landforms. The increase in the frequency and magnitude of flood events has contributed to inevitably gaining public concern over the flood risk and awareness of the necessity to improve forecasting and monitoring streamflows. In this context, an efficient and systematic procedure of post-event surveys that documents the impacts of a flood event over the territory is often missing. Flood areas delimitation, erosion-sediment variation, and riparian vegetation change are often neglected. The present study shows the field- and desk-based post-flood surveys conducted after an extreme event occurred on June 12th, 2019, along the Pioverna torrent in Valsassina (North Italy). The post-flood surveys consist in collecting meteorological data and time-series satellite images to detect the land cover change (identifying areas covered by water, sediments, and vegetation), and in planning, a few weeks later, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based survey to observe the riverbed and streambank change and the modifications in vegetation patterns through high-resolution derived-topographic data. The results show accurate maps of a ground classification from satellite-based elaboration and high-resolution digital elevation models from UAV-based surveys that can support restoration activities and the design of effective countermeasures. This practical application is appropriate and suitable as a river management strategy regarding timing, resources, and economic costs. Thus, standardising the procedure could be essential for creating a historical database, useful to improve specific guidelines and postemergency management strategies.

Abstract:The present work aims to demonstrate how machine learning (ML) techniques can be used for automatic feature detection and extraction in fluvial environments. The use of photogrammetry and machine learning algorithms has improved the understanding of both environmental and anthropic issues. The developed methodology was applied considering the acquisition of multiple photogrammetric images thanks to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) carrying multispectral cameras. These surveys were carried out in the Salbertrand area, along the Dora Riparia River, situated in Piedmont (Italy). The authors developed an algorithm able to identify and detect the water table contour concerning the landed areas: the automatic classification in ML found a valid identification of different patterns (water, gravel bars, vegetation, and ground classes) in specific hydraulic and geomatics conditions. Indeed, the RE+NIR data gave us a sharp rise in terms of accuracy by about 11% and 13.5% of F1-score average values in the testing point clouds compared to RGB data. The obtained results about the automatic classification led us to define a new procedure with precise validity conditions.

Abstract:Remote sensing techniques, namely Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry and t-LiDAR (terrestrial Light Detection and Ranging), two well-established techniques, were applied for seven years in a mountainous Mediterranean catchment in Greece (Ilioupoli test site, Athens), following a wildfire event in 2015. The goal was to monitor and quantify soil erosion and sedimentation rates with cm accuracy. As the frequency of wildfires in the Mediterranean has increased, this study aims to present a methodological approach for monitoring and quantifying soil erosion and sedimentation rates in post-fire conditions, through high spatial resolution field measurements acquired using a UAV survey and a t-LiDAR (or TLS—Terrestrial Laser Scanning), in combination with georadar profiles (Ground Penetration Radar—GPR) and GNSS. This test site revealed that 40 m3 of sediment was deposited following the first intense autumn rainfall events, a value that was decreased by 50% over the next six months (20 m3). The UAV–SfM technique revealed only 2 m3 of sediment deposition during the 2018–2019 analysis, highlighting the decrease in soil erosion rates three years after the wildfire event. In the following years (2017–2021), erosion and sedimentation decreased further, confirming the theoretical pattern, whereas sedimentation over the first year after the fire was very high and then sharply lessened as vegetation regenerated. The methodology proposed in this research can serve as a valuable guide for achieving high-precision sediment yield deposition measurements based on a detailed analysis of 3D modeling and a point cloud comparison, specifically leveraging the dense data collection facilitated by UAV–SfM and TLS technology. The resulting point clouds effectively replicate the fine details of the topsoil microtopography within the upland dam basin, as highlighted by the profile analysis. Overall, this research clearly demonstrates that after monitoring the upland area in post-fire conditions, the UAV–SfM method and LiDAR cm-scale data offer a realistic assessment of the retention dam's life expectancy and management planning. These observations are especially crucial for assessing the impacts in the wildfire-affected areas, the implementation of mitigation strategies, and the construction and maintenance of retention dams.

Abstract:The inspection of strategic works such as dams is of vital importance both for their maintenance and for the safety of downstream populations. The reduced accessibility, both for uptake needs and for their strategic nature, and the large time needed for an inspection by traditional method do not facilitate the investigation of this type of structures. The new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, equipped with high-performance cameras, allows for rapid photographic coverage of the whole dam system. Apart from the placement on the structure of a high number of markers, the correct geo-referencing and validation of the model also requires an important terrestrial topographic campaign by total station, Global Positioning System and laser scanner. Punctual, linear and surface analysis shows the high accuracy of the drone acquiring technique. The product is suitable for a detailed survey of the conservation status of the materials and the complete metric reconstruction of the dam system and the adjacent land. The present work explains firstly a UAV acquisition and then the first dense point cloud validation procedure of a concrete arch gravity dam. The Ridracoli dam is the object of the survey, located in the village of Santa Sofia in central Italy.

Abstract:Abstract. Late years, innovative close-range remote sensing technology such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) are widely applied in the field of geoscience due to their efficiency in collecting data about surface morphology. Their main advantage stands on the fact that conventional methods are mainly collecting point measurements such as compass measurements of bedding and fracture orientation solely from accessible areas. The current research aims to demonstrate the applicability of UAVs in managing landslide and rockfall hazard in mountainous environments during emergency situations using object-based approach. Specifically, a detailed UAV survey took place in a test site namely as Proussos, one of the most visited and famous Monasteries in the territory of Evritania prefecture, in central Greece. An unstable steep slope across the sole road network results in continuous failures and road cuts after heavy rainfall events. Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry is used to provide detailed 3D point clouds describing the surface morphology of landslide objects. The latter resulted from an object-based classification approach of the photogrammetric point cloud products into homogeneous and spatially connected elements. In specific, a knowledge-based ruleset has been developed in accordance with the local morphometric parameters. Orthomosaic and DSM were segmented in meaningful objects based on a number of geometrical and contextual properties and classified as a landslide object (scarp, depletion zone, accumulation zone). The resulted models were used to detect and characterize 3D landslide features and provide a hazard assessment in respect to the road network. Moreover, a detailed assessment of the identified failure mechanism has been provided. The proposed study presents the effectiveness and efficiency of UAV platforms to acquire accurate photogrammetric datasets from high-mountain environments and complex surface topographies and provide a holistic object-based framework to characterize the failure site based on semantic classification of the landslide objects.
Deriving Planform Morphology and Vegetation Coverage From Remote Sensing to Support River Management Applications

Abstract:With the increasing availability of big geospatial data (e.g., multi-spectral satellite imagery) and access to platforms that support multi-temporal analyses (e.g., cloud-based computing, Geographical Information Systems, GIS), the use of remotely sensed information for monitoring riverine hydro-morpho-biodynamics is growing. Opportunities to map, quantify and detect changes in the wider riverscape (i.e., water, sediment and vegetation) at an unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution can support flood risk and river management applications. Focusing on a reach of the Po River (Italy), satellite imagery from Landsat 5, 7, and 8 for the period 1988–2018 were analyzed in Google Earth Engine (GEE) to investigate changes in river planform morphology and vegetation dynamics associated with transient hydrology. An improved understanding of these correlations can help in managing sediment transport and riparian vegetation to reduce flood risk, where biogeomorphic processes are commonly overlooked in flood risk mapping. In the study, two established indices were analyzed: the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) for monitoring changes in the wetted river planform morphology, inferring information about sediment dynamics, and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for evaluating changes in vegetation coverage. Results suggest that planform changes are highly localized with most parts of the reach remaining stable. Using the wetted channel occurrence as a measure of planform stability, almost two-thirds of the wetted channel extent (total area = 86.4 km 2 ) had an occurrence frequency >90% (indicating stability). A loss of planform complexity coincided with the position of former secondary channels, or zones where the active river channel had narrowed. Time series analysis of vegetation dynamics showed that NDVI maxima were recorded in May/June and coincided with the first peak in the hydrological regime (occurring in late spring and associated with snowmelt). Seasonal variation in vegetation coverage is potentially important for local hydrodynamics, influencing flood risk. We suggest that remotely sensed information can provide river scientists with new insights to support the management of highly anthropized watercourses.

Abstract:On 4 August 2015, a very high intensity storm, 31.5 mm in 20 min (94.5 mm/h), hit the massif of Mount Antelao on the Venetian Dolomites (eastern Italian Alps) triggering stony debris flow characterized by high magnitude. It routed along the Ru Secco Creek and progressively reached the resort area and the village of San Vito di Cadore, causing fatalities and damages. The aim of the present research is the study of this debris-flow event by means of pre and post-event topographic data derived by LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry technique associated to its occurrence. This study analyzes the Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) derived from LiDAR survey carried out in July 2015 and UAV-SfM data obtained in September 2019. The most important step to compare these multi-temporal surveys was the co-registration process, fundamental to guarantee the coherence among the two different surveys. The post-event SfM-DTM of the area routed by debris flow subtracted to the pre-event LiDAR-DTM, provided a DoD (DTM of Difference) that was useful to assess the deposition-erosion patterns and estimate debris-flow volume. Multi-temporal topographical data are important to analyze the phenomenon and its characteristics. This allowed us to more in depth analyzed the debris-flow effects and provide valuable information for the planning of risk prevention measures.
Data-fusion of satellite and ground sensors for river hydro-morphodynamics monitoring

Abstract:Changes in fluvial morphology, such as the migration of channels and sandbars, are driven by many factors e.g. water, woody debris and sediment discharges, vegetation and management practice. Nowadays, increased anthropic pressure and climate change are accelerating the natural morphologic dynamics. Therefore, the monitoring of river changes and the assessment of future trends are necessary for the identification of the optimal management practices, aiming at the improvement of river ecological status and the mitigation of hydraulic risk. Satellite data can provide an effective and cost-effective tool for the monitoring of river morphology and its temporal evolution.The main idea of this work is to understand which remote sensed data, and particularly which space and time resolutions, are more adapt for the observation of sandbars evolution in relatively large rivers. To this purpose, multispectral and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) archive data, with different spatial resolution, were used. Preference was given to satellite data freely available. Moreover, the observations extracted by the satellite data were compared with ground data recorded by a fixed camera.The study case is a sandy bar (area about 0.4 km2 and maximum width about 350 m) in a lowland reach of the Po River (Italy), characterized by frequent and relevant morphological changes. The bar shoreline changes were captured by a fixed video camera, installed on a bridge and operating for almost two years (July 2017 - November 2018). To this purpose, we used: Sentinel-2 multispectral images with a spatial resolution of 10 m, Sentinel-1 SAR images with a resolution of 5 x 20 m and CosmoSkyMed SAR images with a resolution of 5 m. It is worth noting that the Sentinel data of the Copernicus Programme are freely available while the CosmoSkyMed data of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) are freely distributed for scientific purpose after the successful participation to an open call. In order to validate the results provided by Sentinel and CosmoSkyMed data, we used very high resolution multispectral images (about 50 cm).Multispectral images are easily interpreted, but are affected by the presence of cloud cover. For instance, in this analysis, the expendable multispectral images were equal to about 50% of the total archive. On the other hand, the SAR images provide information also in the presence of clouds and at night-time, but they have the drawback of more complex processing and interpretation. The shorelines extracted from the satellite images were compared with those extracted from photographic images, taken on the same day of the satellite acquisition. Other comparisons were made between different satellite images acquired with a temporal mismatch of maximum two days.The results of the comparisons showed that the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data were both adequate for the shoreline changes observation. Due to the higher resolution, the CosmoSkyMed data provided better results. SAR data and multispectral data allowed for automatic extraction of the bar shoreline, with different degree of processing burden. The fusion of data from different satellites gave the opportunity of highly increase the sampling rate.
Coastal Storm-Induced Sinkholes: Insights from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Monitoring

Abstract:In recent decades, the scientific community has increasingly focused on extreme events linked to climate change, which are leading to more intense and frequent natural disasters. The Mediterranean can be considered a hotspot where the effects of these changes are expected to be more intense compared to other regions of the planet. Italy is not exempt; in fact, with its extensive shoreline, it is particularly vulnerable, especially to high sea levels and coastal erosions. In this framework, from late October to early November 2023, six storm surges occurred in the Gulf of Trieste (NE Italy). These events, characterized by winds from 190°N to 220°N and the significant wave height, which reached up to 1.81 m nearshore—an uncommon meteorological condition in the northern Adriatic Sea—caused the occurrence of eight coastal sinkholes and substantial damages to man-made structures. Thanks to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and their derived products (high-resolution orthomosaics, Digital Elevation Models—DEMs, and point clouds), it was possible to study these features over time, enabling long-term coastal dynamics monitoring, which can be crucial for timely and effective response and restoration efforts.

Abstract:Cascading landslides are specific multi-hazard events in which a primary movement triggers successive landslide processes. Areas with dynamic and quickly changing environments are more prone to this type of phenomena. Both the kind and the evolution velocity of a landslide depends on the materials involved. Indeed, rockfalls are generated when rocks fall from a very steep slope, while debris flow and/or mudslides are generated by fine materials like silt and clay after strong water imbibition. These events can amplify the damage caused by the initial trigger and propagate instability along a slope, often resulting in significant environmental and societal impacts. The Morino-Rendinara cascading landslide, situated in the Ernici Mountains along the border of the Abruzzo and Lazio regions (Italy), serves as a notable example of the complexities and devastating consequences associated with such events. In March 2021, a substantial debris flow event obstructed the Liri River, marking the latest step in a series of landslide events. Conventional techniques such as geomorphological observations and geological surveys may not provide exhaustive information to explain the landslide phenomena in progress. For this reason, UAV image acquisition, InSAR interferometry, and pixel offset analysis can be used to improve the knowledge of the mechanism and kinematics of landslide events. In this work, the interferometric data ranged from 3 January 2020 to 24 March 2023, while the pixel offset data covered the period from 2016 to 2022. The choice of such an extensive data window provided comprehensive insight into the investigated events, including the possibility of identifying other unrecorded events and aiding in the development of more effective mitigation strategies. Furthermore, to supplement the analysis, a specific finite element method for slope stability analysis was used to reconstruct the deep geometry of the system, emphasizing the effect of groundwater-level flow on slope stability. All of the findings indicate that major landslide activities were concentrated during the heavy rainfall season, with movements ranging from several centimeters per year. These results were consistent with numerical analyses, which showed that the potential slip surface became significantly more unstable when the water table was elevated.

Abstract:In dynamic rivers the assessment of flood hazard related to geomorphological dynamics assumes crucial importance. Recently, some geomorphological approaches have been developed to assess channel dynamics in response to floods. In this study we explore the River Morphodynamic Corridors which include the current active channel and areas of the alluvial plain that may be (re)activated by channel dynamics during floods. In order to assess the effectiveness of such corridors for mapping flood hazard, we delineated the morphodynamic corridors along a river network of 74 km in the Cordevole River catchment (Italy) and compared the corridors with the channel changes that were triggered by a high-magnitude event (Vaia Storm) that hit the study area in October 2018. We observed that the morphodynamic corridors are capable to define areas where channel dynamics are most likely to occur and have proven satisfactorily effective in predicting channel widenings triggered by a severe flood. The results show that it is crucial to adopt different procedures for corridor delineation based on channel width, i.e., for small streams (width < 30 m) a more precautionary approach should be adopted that considers the entire alluvial plain as an area potentially affected by channel dynamics. The study highlighted an inherent limitation of the approach, since erosion that can affect valley slopes or fluvial terraces (i.e., widening of the alluvial plain) is not taken into account. This application represents the first validation of the River Morphodynamic Corridors approach through comparison with observed flood channel changes. Through this analysis, it can be inferred that, notwithstanding its relatively simple procedure, the approach allows a robust mapping and delineation of flood hazard due to river channel dynamics. The River Morphodynamic Corridors, when applied jointly with hydraulic model for assessing inundation processes, allow an overall assessment of flood hazard, particularly in dynamic river contexts.
