Abstract:The uptake of phosphate by carbonates plays an important role in controlling the fate and transport of phosphorus in soil, but the mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, P-31 solid-state NMR was used to investigate the mechanisms of phosphate uptake by calcite over wide pH (6-10) and concentration (5 mu M - 10 mM) ranges. It was found that calcium phosphate precipitates formed at very low phosphate concentrations (similar to 50 mu M, pH 8). Because of their low yield and poor crystallinity, the precipitates were not directly detected by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) but were unequivocally identified by a single NMR peak at delta(P-31) = similar to 2.9 ppm. This peak was assigned to carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHap) based on further characterization with 2-D P-31{H-1} heterogeneous correlation (HetCor) experiments and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). When [PO43-] was below 30 mu M at pH 8, a broad peak at delta(P-31) = similar to 4.0 ppm was observed with an FWHM of-5 ppm; this was assigned to surface adsorbed phosphate on calcite owing to its distinct chemical shift and insignificant P-31-H-1 cross-polarization (CP) effect. Additionally, we found that the presence of a small amount of dissolved fluoride facilitated the formation of carbonate fluorapatite (CFap), implying that calcite dissolution plays an important role in phosphate sequestration. This study indicated that calcite may be effective for mobilization dissolved phosphate and lowering its bioavailability in aquatic and soil systems.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) quantity–intensity relationships are central to the solubility and release of P from soil to water. Relationships between P extractable by 0.5 M NaHCO extractable P (Olsen P; quantity, Q) and P extractable by 0.01 M CaCl2 (CaCl2–P; possible predictor of soil solution or drainage water P; intensity, I) are curvilinear: above a certain Olsen P concentration, CaCl2–P becomes much more soluble than when below it. Aluminium–, Fe– and Ca–P forms (extractable by Olsen’s reagent) are thought to control P solubility. Thus, our objectives were to identify P forms in equilibrium with CaCl2–P via solubility equilibrium experiments, and the behaviour of CaCl2–P in relation to Al, Fe and Ca associated P, determined with 31P high power decoupling magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P HPDec/MAS NMR). Results indicated that two Q–I relationships occurred, one for soils above pH 5.8, and the other for soils below pH 5.8. Above pH 5.8, soils were saturated with respect to hydroxyapatite (Ca5(PO4)3OH) and undersaturated with respect to β-tricalcium phosphate (β-Ca3(PO4)2), while log ion-activity products showed that all soils and pHs were either saturated or in equilibrium with variscite (AlPO4·2H2O) or its amorphous analogue. Using 31P HPDec/MAS NMR, Ca–P was best correlated with CaCl2–P in soils above pH 5.8, and with Al–P in soils below this pH. This study demonstrates the value of solid-state NMR in conjunction with wet chemical techniques for the study of labile P and P loss from pasture soils with a wide range of managements.
Direct observations of nanoscale brushite dissolution by the concentration-dependent adsorption of phosphate or phytate

Abstract:With the development of agricultural intensification, phosphorus (P) accumulation in croplands and sediments has resulted in the increasingly widespread interaction between inorganic and organic P species, which has been, previously, underestimated or even ignored. We quantified the nanoscale dissolution kinetics of sparingly soluble brushite (CaHPO4·2H2O, DCPD) over a broad range of phosphate and/or phytate concentrations by using in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). Compared to water, we found that low concentrations of phosphate (1-1000 µM) or phytate (1-100 µM) inhibited brushite dissolution by slowing single step retraction. However, with increasing phosphate or phytate concentrations to 10 mM, there was a reverse effect of dissolution promotion at brushite-water interfaces. In situ observations of the coupled dissolution-reprecipitation showed that phosphate precipitated more readily than phytate on brushite surfaces, with the formation of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP). For a fundamental understanding, zeta potential and in situ Raman spectroscopy (RS) revealed that the concentration-dependent dissolution is attributed to the reverse of outer-sphere to inner-sphere adsorption with increasing phosphate or phytate concentrations. In addition, the mineralization of phytate with outer-sphere adsorption by phytase was higher than that with inner-spere adsorption, and the presence of phytate delayed ACP phase transformation to hydroxylapatite (HAP). These in situ observations and analyses may fill the knowledge gaps of interaction between inorganic and organic P species in P-rich terrestrial and aquatic environments, thereby implicating their biogeochemical cycling and the associated availability.

Abstract:The interaction of phosphate with typical soil minerals is important for understanding P cycling in natural and agricultural systems. We investigated the mechanisms of kinetics of phosphate uptake onto calcite using solid-state NMR spectroscopy. At a low phosphate concentration of 0.5 mM, the 31 P single-pulse solid-state NMR peak revealed the formation of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) within the initial 30 min, which transformed to carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHAP) after 12 d. At a high phosphate concentration (5 mM), the results showed transformation from ACP to OCP, later to brushite, and eventually to CHAP. The formation of brushite is further supported by 31 P{ 1 H} heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) spectra via a correlation of δ P–31 = 1.7 ppm and the 1 H peak at δ H–1 = 6.4 ppm, which denotes the structure water of brushite. Furthermore, 13 C NMR directly revealed both A-type and B-type CHAP. Generally, this work provides a detailed understanding of the aging effect on the phase transition scale of phosphate surface precipitation onto calcite in soil environments.

Abstract:We examined the microbial transformation and utilization of P adsorbed on the surfaces of some variable charge minerals, which are dominant in Chinese red soils, in order to evaluate the feasibility of enhancing the availability of soil P to plants through biological approaches. Under laboratory conditions, microorganisms utilized adsorbed P very efficiently. The utilization of the added adsorbed P by microorganisms after a 3-week incubation was 42–43% for kaolinite–P, 42–46% for goethite–P and 38–43% for amorphous Al-oxide–P, which was about 4–8 times higher than the utilization of applied soluble fertilizer P by crops within a growing season. Of the adsorbed P transformed by microbes, 17–34% was water-soluble and 0.5M NaHCO3-extractable P, and 23–37% was incorporated into microbial biomass, with the amounts of water-soluble and NaHCO3-extractable inorganic P of the microbial medium and the control being similar for the three variable charge mineral–P complexes. The efficient utilization and transformation of adsorbed P could have been resulted from the increased solubility of Fe, Al and Si from (i) the minerals because of the decrease in pH of the culture medium, (ii) the possible complexation by low molecular weight organic acids, and (iii) the increased desorption of adsorbed P through ligand exchange by the organic anions from microbial activities. These results showed that microorganisms have a great potential to enhance the availability of soil P to plants by transforming soil-bound P into a more water-soluble P pool in soils.

Abstract:Phosphate adsorption on the surfaces of the iron oxyhydroxide polymorphs goethite, akaganeite, and lepidocrocite were studied by using P-31 static spin-echo mapping NMR experiments to determine how this environmentally-important anion binds to common soil minerals. The large P-31 hyperfine shifts confirm the formation of inner-sphere complexes between the phosphate anion and the iron oxyhydroxide surface, the large shifts indicating the presence of Fe3+-O-P covalent bonds. Binding was explored as a function of pH and phosphate concentrations, the phosphate ion binding via two oxygen ions to the oxyhydroxide surface under all conditions and for all the surfaces. To support our analysis of the NMR spectra, adsorption of dimethyl phosphinic acid (DPA) on iron oxyhydroxides was also investigated, since this ion can only bond via one Fe-O-P interaction to the surface. The P-31 hyperfine shifts observed for this anion were 50% of those seen for the phosphate anions, confirming that the phosphate ions bind to the surface via two P-O-Fe linkages.
Phosphorus Adsorption by Soils from Four Land Use Patterns

Abstract:This study was designed to survey the surface soils characteristics, which collected from Chinese chestnut woodland (Si), Phyllostachys edulis woodland (S2), paddy rice farmland (S3) and vegetable farmland (S4), to assess the phosphorus sorption isotherm and analyze the relationship between soil properties and sorption parameters. Results indicated that soils from paddy rice and vegetable fields were hydragric anthrosols and alluvial soils with a silt clay texture, while soils from Chinese chestnut and Phyllostachys edulis woodland were stony soils with a sandy texture. All the soils were generally acidic and pH ranged from 4.48 to 7.45. Fe-P and Ca-P contents in paddy rice and vegetable soils were higher than the contents of Chinese chestnut and Phyllostachys edulis soils. Crystalline iron oxides were the dominant forms of iron oxide in these soils. Sorption isotherm experiments showed that these soils exhibited a wide range of phosphorus sorption capacity values and the sequence of sorption capacity was S3 > S4 > Si > S2. The Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin models can be used to describe phosphorus sorption data, with R-2 ranging from 0.75 to 0.98. The parameters of Q(max) (phosphorus sorption maximum), K and B (Freundlich and Temkin adsorption constant) ranged from 71.20 to 325.11 mg kg(-1), 36.51-121.15 mg kg(-1) and 44.12 to 159.69 mg kg(-1), respectively. Q(max), F and B had a highly significant positive relationship with pH (NaF), Ca-P, clay, Al-t and Al-o. About 92-99 % of the maximum phosphorus sorption capacity of these soils could be estimated by the combination of some of these properties.

Abstract:Phosphorus adsorption of kaolinite,montmorillonite,attapulgite,vermiculite and zeolite and their affecting factors were studied through experiment on isotherm P adsorption and post-saturation-adsorption P release.Results show that vermiculite is theoretically the highest in P saturation adsorption capacity,being 3 473 mg·kg~(-1) and followed by attapulgite,yellow cinnamon soil,montmorillonite and Xiashu loess,zeolite and kaolinite.The last is the lowest in theoretic P saturation adsorption capacity,lingering at 554 mg·kg~(-1).The P adsorption capacity of these clay minerals and soils was mainly influenced by their contents of reactive Ca,Fe and Al,but it was not much affected by soil pH value,CEC and specific surface of the clay minerals and soils,because the main mechanism of the adsorption is chemical sorption.Meanwhile another experiment on desorption of phosphorus from these clay minerals and soils saturated with phosphorus was also conducted.Results show that P release from the clay minerals and soils after P saturation adsorption was very limited.

Abstract:PurposeSorption and precipitation of phosphate are important processes in controlling fate of phosphorus (P) in P-fertilized soils, especially those affected by magnesium (Mg) ions.Materials and methodsThe interaction between Mg(II) (0.42 and 8.33 mM) ions and phosphate (0.32 and 6.45 mM) at the calcite–water interface were investigated with various pH values from 6.0 to 12.0, using a combination of sorption envelopes, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction.Results and discussionAmorphous calcium phosphate, dibasic calcium phosphate dihydrate, and hydroxyapatite are formed at high phosphate concentration (6.45 mM) and high pH (>8.0). The presence of low Mg(II) ion level (0.42 mM) had little effect on phosphate sorption. When Mg(II) ions increased to 8.33 mM, phosphate retention was inhibited in the weak acid condition since incorporation of Mg(II) ions kinetically hinders precipitation resulting in greater solubility of calcium phosphate while high pH favors Mg adsorption to provide more =Mg sites and OH functional groups on the surface of calcite, which enhanced the formation of Mg–P phases. The likely mechanism is attributed to the different surface terminations of calcite sorbed by phosphate at pH < 8.0 and pH > 8.0 in the presence of Mg(II) ions.ConclusionsOur experimental results suggested that soil pH, initial concentration of phosphate, and the presence of Mg(II) ions and calcite play an important role to affect the fate of phosphate in P-fertilized soils.

Abstract:The differences of P adsorption-desorption characteristics of amorphous and crystalline iron oxides and their(relation) to P adsorption saturation were studied by using three synthetic iron oxides.The results showed that P adsorption properties of these three synthetic iron oxides could be described by Langumir equation with a correlation coefficient larger than 0.9 being statistical significant at 1% level.It was found by comprehensively taking Q_m(maximum quantity of adsorption),K(adsorption constant) and MBC(maximum buffing capacity) into account,ferrihydrate(amorphous) was much larger than crystalline iron oxides(goethite and hematite) in both intensity and capacity of P adsorption.P adsorbed by ferrihydrate was much more difficult to be desorbed than those by goethite and hematite.The large active surfaces of ferrihydrate contribute little on P desorption.It was suggested by our results that P adsorption saturation might be a promising integrated index for estimating the intensity and capacity of P adsorption-desorption in soils or iron oxides.
Phosphorus Adsorption Saturation of Synthetic Iron Oxides in Relation to Phosphorus Availability for Paddy Rice

Abstract:The characteristics of phosphorus (P) sorption/desorption of artificially synthesized iron oxides (ferrihydrate, goethite and hematite) and the relationship between P adsorption saturation of ferrihydrate and P uptake by rice were studied. The results obtained from experiments showed that P adsorption properties of three synthetic iron oxides could be described by the Langumir equation with a correlation coefficient ¿0.9 at 1 % significant level. It was found by comparing Qm (maximum quantity of adsorption), K (adsorption constant) and MBC (maximum buffing capacity) of three synthetic iron oxides that ferrihydrate (amorphous) was much larger than crystalline iron oxides (goethite and hematite) in both intensity and capacity of P adsorption. Phosphorus adsorbed by ferrihydrate was much more difficult to be desorbed than that absorbed by goethite and hematite. It could be found from P desorption curves that the corresponding quantities of P adsorbed by ferrihydrate, goethite and hematite for desorbed P reaching to 0.1 mg g−1 were 28, 2.5 and 1.4 mg g−1, respectively. However, when P desorption curves were changed to plot saturation of P adsorption (adsorbed P/Qm*100) with P desorbed it was found that the corresponding saturation of P adsorption of three kinds of iron oxides for desorbed P reaching to 0.1 mg g−1 was all about 70 %. This suggested that P adsorption saturation may be used as an integrative index for estimating the intensity and capacity of P adsorptiondesorption in soils or iron oxides. A bioassay using rice indicated that P uptake by rice was significantly correlated to the saturation of P adsorbed by ferrihydrate and 50% of P adsorption saturation could be used as a critical index for diagnosing status of P supplied by ferrihydrate-bonded P at the tillering stage of rice.

Abstract:Crop production on red soils in China is largely limited by the low availability of phosphorus, which is frequently attributed to the adsorption of phosphate by variable-charge minerals including Fe and Al oxides and kaolinite. Isotopic tracing analysis and soil incubation were carried out to investigate the desorption and microbial transformation of applied specifically sorbed P in two pH-contrasting light-textured soils. A rapid release of P from the added mineral-P surface complex in the two tested soils was observed. Most of the released P was recovered in a 0.5 M NaHCO 3 extract and in soil microbial biomass. Microbial biomass- 32 P was detected at early stages of incubation and reached up to 10–30% of the added 32 P. Approximately 50–70% of the added complex 32 P, varying between minerals and soils, was extractable in the 0.5 M NaHCO 3 at 75 days after incubation for the acid soil but up to 120 days for the neutral soil. Microbial biomass-P plus 0.5 M NaHCO 3 -extractable 32 P accounted for more than 60–80% of total added complex- 32 P, implying high desorption and transformation of the specifically sorbed P in the two soils. There was more inorganic 32 P than organic 32 P in the NaHCO 3 extract, suggesting that chemical release of specifically sorbed P was dominant. Ligand exchange and chemical desorption due to a change in environmental conditions such as pH and ionic strength are likely the major mechanisms responsible for the chemical release of specifically sorbed 32 P in the tested soils.

Abstract:Sediment, composed of a complex assemblage of minerals, controls the fate and behaviour of P in aqueous environments and affects trophic status. In this study, P adsorption was studied on minerals including quartz, hematite, potassium feldspar, montmorillonite, kaolin, and calcite (i.e., the main components of sediment) and sediment from the Guanting Reservoir. A general formula for P adsorption was proposed that considers mineral composition through the component additivity method, also incorporating the effects of environmental factors, including the aqueous P concentration (Ce), pH, sediment concentration (S), and ionic strength (IS). The P adsorption capacity gradually decreased with increasing particle size, and the contributions from kaolin and montmorillonite to P adsorption were significant despite representing only a small fraction of sediment (with a maximum amount of P adsorption of 0.92 and 0.36 mg/g, respectively). The content of quartz accounted for approximately 40–60% of sediment; however, its P adsorption capacity was only 0.13 mg/g. These minerals exhibited different adsorption characteristics due to their different surface morphologies and lattice structures. Multivariable regression analysis was used to show that the amount of P adsorption was strongly correlated with Ce, followed by S, IS, and pH.

Interactions of Phosphorous Molecules with the Acid Sites of H-Beta Zeolite: Insights from Solid-State NMR Techniques and Theoretical Calculations

Abstract:The local structures of various Bronsted and Lewis acid sites in H-Beta zeolite were resolved with the combined (31)p MAS NMR, (31)p-Al-27 TRAPDOR NMR experiments and theoretical calculations at different levels. In addition, the interacting mechanisms of these acid sites with probe molecules such as trimethylphosphine (TMP) and trimethylphosphine oxide (TMPO) were clarified,which greatly aids the understanding of acid catalysis. Owing to the narrow chemical shift range and close Bronsted acid strengths, only an average resonance at -4.5 ppm was observed in TMP adsorbed H-Beta zeolite, consistent with the calculated data of acidities (Substitution energies and proton affinities), geometries, adsorption energies as well as (31)p chemical shifts. However, two types of Bronsted acids were distinguished by TMPO, and the HF/DZVP2 (MP2/DZVP2) chemical shifts were calculated at 68.1 (69.5) and 69.7-72.1 (71.7-74.9)ppm, respectively. Two types of Lewis acids were identified at -32.0 and -47.0 ppm with the latter exhibiting strong P-31-Al-27 TRAPDOR effects. With theoretical calculations, these two peaks were attributed to the extra-lattice oxo-AlOH2+ species and the three-fold coordinated lattice-Al, extra-framework Al(OH)(3), oxo-AlO+ species, respectively. The peak at -60.0 ppm was conventionally assigned to the TMP physisorption, but the calculations indicated that the EFAL monovalent Al(OH)(2)(+) species coordinating with two lattice-O atoms near the framework All atom can contribute to it as well. The effect of soil acidity on potentially mobile phosphorus in a grassland soil

Abstract:This study compared phosphorus (P) speciation and the relationship between bicarbonate extractable (Olsen) P and 0(.)01 m CaCl2 extractable P (a measure of potentially mobile P) in soils from plots of the Park Grass experiment started in 1856 at IACR-Rothamsted, UK and with and without nitrogen as (NH4)(2)SO4 and with and without calcium carbonate (CaCO3, lime). A point, termed the change point, was noted in Olsen P, above which 0.01 m CaCl2-P increased at a greater rate per unit increase in Olsen P than below this point. Previous findings have shown a change point for soils with a pH > 5.8 at 56 mg Olsen P/kg and at 120 mg Olsen P/kg for soils below this pH. Soils given (NH4)(2)SO4 annually since 1856 and with lime periodically since 1903 mostly had a pH between 3.7 to 5.7, some of these (NH4)(2)SO4 treated soils were limed to pH 6.5 and above from 1965. Irrespective of their pH in 1991/92 all the soils had a similar change point (120 mg Olsen P/kg) to that found for other soils with pH < 5.8 (112 mg Olsen P/kg). In a laboratory study lasting 30 days, the addition of CaCO3 to acid soils from the field experiment that had received (NH4)(2)SO4 had a similar change point to soils with pH < 5.8 irrespective of pH, suggesting soil P chemistry was controlled by the long period of soil acidity and this was not reversed by a short period at a higher pH. The effect of pH was attributed to the creation of P sorptive surfaces on aluminium precipitates compared with less acidic soils (pH > 5.8) where there was less exchangeable Al to be precipitated. This was confirmed with solid-state P-31 nuclear magnetic resonance, which indicated that for soils of similar total P concentration and pH, there was twice as much amorphous Al-P in soils given (NH4)(2)SO4 compared with those without. Changes in pH as a result of applications of (NH4)(2)SO4 or lime can greatly change the concentration of potentially mobile P due to the effects on Al solubility. Although there was less potentially mobile P in soils with pH < 5.8 than in soils above this pH, it is usually advised in temperate regions to maintain soils about pH 6.5 for arable crops.

Nutrient Cycling in Agroecosystems

Abstract:The improvement of P management in agriculture and environment requires a good understanding of residual effect of applied P in soils. The specific adsorption of P on variable charge minerals has been considered as the major mechanism that leads to a very low utilization of P fertilizer by crops within a growing season in Chinese red soils. Soil incubation and isotope tracing analysis were carried out to examine the transformation kinetics and potential availability of added specifically sorbed 32 P in two pH contrasting light textured soils. The 32 P recovered by 0.5 M NaHCO 3 extraction and microbial biomass-P measurement from the added specifically sorbed 32 P in the soils was well described by a first-order reaction and a Langmuir-type kinetic model, with correlation coefficients (R) being, on average, 0.938 and 0.959, respectively. The half-life (t 1/2 , from the first-order model) of the four tested mineral-P complexes ranged from 29 to 47 d in the acid sandy soil and 33 to 105 d in the neutral silty soil. Goethite-P was the most stable among the four tested mineral-P complexes. The potential availability of the mineral complex P (q m , in percent of total 32 P added) obtained from the Langmuir equation ranged from 43.7 to 90.9% for the four mineral-P complexes, and decreased in the order: Al oxide-P (90.9%) > montmorillonite-P (86.2%) > kaolinite-P (77.5%) > goethite-P (60.2%) in the acid sandy soil, whereas the order was Al oxide-P (89.3%) > kaolinite-P (86.2%) > montmorillonite-P (82.6%) > goethite-P (43.7%) in the neutral silty soil. Based on the release rate and potential availability, kaolinite-P and Al oxide-P could be important sources for residual effect of applied P in variable-charge soils. The goethite-P has the lowest release rate and potential availability among the mineral-P complexes, implying that iron oxides may be the most important variable-charge mineral responsible for P fixation in the Chinese red soils.

Abstract:Calcium (Ca2+) and phosphorous (PO43-) significantly influence the form and effectiveness of nitrogen (N), however, the precise mechanisms governing the adsorption of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) are still lacking. This study employed batch adsorption experiments, charge distribution and multi-site complexation (CD-MUSIC) models and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to elucidate the mechanism by which Ca2+ and PO43- affect the adsorption of NH4+-N and NO3--N on the goethite (GT) surface. The results showed that the adsorption of NH4+-N on the GT exhibited an initial increase followed by a decrease as pH increased, peaking at a pH of 8.5. Conversely, the adsorption of NO3--N decreased with rising pH. According to the CD-MUSIC model, Ca2+ minimally affected the NH4+-N adsorption on the GT but enhanced NO3--N adsorption via electrostatic interaction, promoting the adsorption of ≡FeOH-NO3- and ≡Fe3O-NO3- species. Similarly, PO43- inhibited the adsorption of ≡FeOH-NO3- and ≡Fe3O-NO3- species. However, PO43- boosted NH4+-N adsorption by facilitating the formation of ≡Fe3O-NH4+ via electrostatic interaction and site competition. DFT calculations indicates that although bidentate phosphate (BP) was beneficial to stabilize NH4+-N than monodentate phosphate (SP), SP-NH4+ was the main adsorption configuration at pH 5.5-9.5 owing the prevalence of SP on the GT surface under site competition of NH4+-N. The results of CD-MUSIC model and DFT calculation were verified mutually, and provide novel insights into the mechanisms underlying N fixation and migration in soil.

Abstract:CO32- can compete with phosphate as well as inhibit phosphate adsorption onto calcite surface, however, calcite would be decomposed into calcium oxide at a certain temperature. The adsorption of phosphate onto calcined calcite was investigated in a series of batch experiments and in a wide range of calcination temperature. The results showed that phosphate adsorption was dependent on calcination temperature; adsorption efficiency increased with temperature increased. pH value also affected the process of phosphate removal, phosphate removal rate was 98% at pH 11.5. The results showed that the main mechanisms in phosphate adsorption processes were chemical adsorption, however, XRD and FTIR showed that HAP (hydroxyapatite) was not observed in the precipitation. In multi-variables interaction effects, there were not significant between adsorption process and calcination process, except for a positive interacts only weakly between pH vs holding time.

Abstract:Sorption reactions occurring at mineral/water interfaces are of fundamental importance in controlling the sequestration and bioavailability of nutrients and pollutants in aqueous environments. To advance the understanding of sorption reactions, development of new methodology is required. In this study, we applied novel P-31 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to investigate the mechanism of phosphate sorption on aluminum hydroxides under different environmental conditions, including pH (4-10), concentration (0.1-10 mM), ionic strength (0.00-10.5 M), and reaction time (15 min-22 days). Under these conditions, the NMR results suggest formation of bidentate binuclear inner-sphere surface complexes was the dominant mechanism. However, it was found that surface wetting caused a small difference. A small amount (<3%) of monodentate mononuclear inner-sphere surface complexes was observed in addition to the majority of bidentate binuclear surface complexes on a wet paste sample prepared at pH 5, which was analyzed in situ by a double-resonance NMR technique, namely, P-31{Al-27} rotational echo adiabatic passage double resonance (REAPDOR). Additionally, we found that adsorbents can substantially impact phosphate sorption not only on the macroscopic sorption capacity but also on their P-31 NMR spectra. Very similar NMR peaks were observed for phosphate sorbed to gibbsite and bayerite, whereas the spectra for phosphate adsorbed to boehmite, corundum, and gamma-alumina were significantly different. All of these measurements reveal that NMR spectroscopy is a useful analytical tool for studying phosphorus chemistry at environmental interfaces.
