Abstract:The adoption of environmentally friendly farmland conservation techniques by farmers is an important way to effectively curb agricultural surface pollution and promote the conservation of farmland quality. Based on 425 farmers' in-depth interview data, a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis method was used to construct a psychological cognition (farmers' awareness and willingness to participate)—external context (organizational linkages and government regulation)—behavioral effect model to reveal the conditional configuration and multivariate paths of psychological cognition and external contextual factors influencing farmers' behavioral effects on the adoption of environmentally friendly farmland conservation technologies. The results show that individual behavioral decision factors do not influence the behavioral effects of farmers. The results show that individual behavioral decision factors are not necessary to drive the effective adoption of environmentally friendly farmland conservation technologies and that multiple decision factors interact to form three sets of configurations that enhance the behavioral effectiveness of farmers, summarized as the willingness-to-participate dominant model, the internal and external constraints dominant model, and the external context dominant model.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2><p>The adoption of sustainable residue management practices is considered as a cleaner production option for the agricultural sector. However, limited information is available from Pakistan on the current use and adoption of sustainable residue management practices and different socio-physiological factors are involved in the process of shaping farmers' intentions. Based on the protection motivation theory framework, this study analyzes the socio-physiological factors affecting the farmers' intentions on adopting sustainable crop residue management practices. The paper is based on cross-sectional data collected from 420 farmers across Punjab and employs a structural equation modeling to explore research objectives. The research findings show that farmers, who perceive high risk from crop residue burning or who are aware of its negative consequences, are more intended to adopt sustainable crop residue management practices. However, their adoption intentions do have significant relationship with the self-efficacy implying the lack of resources, time, knowledge, competency, and skills as constraints limiting the adoption of cleaner production strategies. Further, the research findings also confirm the positive and significant role of habits of farmers in shaping their intentions to use sustainable crop residue management practices. In addition to this, the paper found a positive and significant role in social interaction, sources of information and access to extension services in shaping farmers' decision regarding sustainable residue management practices at the farm level. The research findings suggest enhancing awareness to highlight the negative impacts of crop residue burning and to train them regarding useful and sustainable crop residue management options that are not only cleaner production options but also generate economic benefits for farmers.</p>

Abstract:Purpose: The objectives of this study to identify the indicator of factors make Asian farmer community influence towards modern technology farming practices and adaptation. Theoretical Framework: 11 of final recent literature had reported according to the eligibility and screening procedure which focus on Design/methodology/approach: using thematic analysis guided by ROSES 2018 to conduct systematic literature review. ROSES protocol as a guidance through five key methodological review processes that begins with identification screening using two eligibility databases namely Scopus and Web of Science. After formulating the research questions, quality appraisal and data extraction are done and the final process is analysis. Findings: From thematic analysis, this 11 of final review articles had identify six main themes 1) demographic indicator; 2) perception and belief indicators, 3) perceived awareness 4) technology acceptance indicators; 5) internal factor indicators; and 6) external factor indicators. From the six main themes, the review found another 33 sub-themes. Research, practical & social implications: There is a significant contribution into the body of existing knowledge and for practical implications. The findings explained the significant importance factors of technology behavioural intention and adaptation indicators to Asian community such as: 1) Listed factors may influence and transform the traditional agriculture into modern agriculture practices among Asian farmer community; 2) A government strategies and policy for strengthening future agriculture sector and 3) to recommend future direction for researcher in this area of study. Originality/value: The result had identified a growing number of literature on the factors can motivate and encourage Asian Farmer to adopt modern technology into their farming which can contribute the most importance to the government and policy maker. Despite, ASEAN countries are still lagging behind advance countries particularly in agriculture sector. Indeed, there were insufficient studies that systematically review the existing literature review on behavioural intention and adaptation of modern technology in Asia region. Hence, it’s a need to review the existing of literature on factors influencing Asian Farmer in technology behavioural intention and adaptation.
Capital endowments and adoption of agricultural green production technologies in China: A meta-regression analysis review

Abstract:The promotion of agricultural green production technologies (AGPTs) is a fundamental channel of agricultural sustainable development, and the capital endowments that drive farmers to adopt AGPTs have sparked an enormous interest. Given the mixed findings of 237 primary empirical studies on the link between capital endowments - AGPTs adoption, this systematic quantitative review conducts a meta-regression analysis method to estimate the genuine effects of different capital endowments in terms of eleven proxy factors on AGPTs adoption in China. Combining the estimation strategies of Weighted Least Squares (WLS) and Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA), our findings reveal that three proxy factors (Technical training, Family income, and Government subsidies) are infected by publication bias, and the study-to-study variation between those published studies that focus on these proxy factors stems from several heterogeneity features, such as the types of AGPTs, measurements of adoption decision, and model specification. After controlling the above issues, there are still six proxy factors attached to five types of capital endowments-Technical training, Labor force, Assets, Land size, Social network, and Government subsidies-present positive and significant genuine effects on AGPTs adoption. These effects are robust to different estimation strategies or model specifications. As farmers normally possess a low level of capital endowment and willingness to adopt AGPTs in most developing countries, such study findings are expected to provide some enlightenment for future research and policies related to the effective promotion of AGPTs, which may contribute to carbon reduction, environmental protection of farmland, and agricultural sustainable development.
Investigating Key Factors Influencing Farming Decisions Based on Soil Testing and Fertilizer Recommendation Facilities (STFRF)—A Case Study on Rural Bangladesh

Abstract:Proper nourishment is fundamental for satisfactory crop growth and production. However, for efficient crop production, it is important to understand the soil environment, to recognize the limitations of that environment, and to ameliorate them where possible without damaging the soil quality. Soil testing and fertilizer recommendation facilities (STFRF) can help farmers to achieve environmental and economic sustainability by assisting them in recognizing their soil condition, reducing agrochemicals usage, using an appropriate amount of fertilizer, minimizing input costs, and achieving higher yield. These facilities are not new in the context of Bangladesh, yet the adoption rate among farmers is low and its determinants have rarely been empirically tested based on microlevel data. Therefore, this study examined those factors underlying the adoption of soil testing and fertilizer recommendation facilities using field surveyed data of 176 individual farmers. Our evidence shows that young farmers with less farming experience are more likely to adopt these facilities. Additionally, being small-scale farmers, having higher education, having more farming income, and having more knowledge about these facilities and the fees of these facilities were found to have a significant effect on the adoption. On the other hand, gender, land ownership, and secondary income were found to be insignificant with regard to the adoption of soil testing and fertilizer recommendation facilities. Our results also revealed that most adopter farmers not only focused on profitability, but were additionally concerned with environmental well-being.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: This research evaluated farmers’ decisions to adopt organic farming. It was first introduced by developed countries to minimize environmental impacts originated by intensive use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides to enhance production yield. Although, organic farming offers environmentally sound methodologies for crop production, but Asian farmers are reluctant to adopt organic farming. In this study, a survival analysis (SA) was employed to determine the reasons for and the time is taken by farmers to adopt organic agriculture. This research studied the farmers’ goals, agricultural policies, and attitude towards risk, as covariates in the survival analysis. A multiple criteria decision-making method based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process was used to evaluate the farmers’ goals. Data were collected from agricultural farms located in three districts in Punjab, Pakistan. A questionnaire was used to collect empirical evidence. This study reported that the farmers’ goals were crucial to their acceptance of organic farming; furthermore, young farmers and farmers with risk-inclined attitudes were more prone to adopting organic farming. The study also determined that change in policy and introduce special package for organic agriculture can encouraged the adoption of organic methods.

Abstract:Information asymmetry plays an important role in the non-adoption of modern agricultural inputs like improved seeds, pesticides and fertilizers etc. Therefore, this study investigated the role of farmers’ socio-economic attributes and farm level characteristics in avoiding asymmetry of information in agricultural input markets (i.e. exaggerated prices and low quality). The approach captures the farm level heterogeneity and complexity that may help the authorities in strengthening existing market regulations to control price and quality disparities. We analysed 395 randomly selected farm households using multinomial logit model. We found that farmers with large landholding size are less likely to face quality and more likely to face price information asymmetry. Farmers with higher education, more physical assets and better access to other sources of information are less likely to face both quality and price information asymmetry. Borrowers as compared to purchasers are more likely to face information asymmetry on prices of agricultural inputs. Non-adopters of improved agricultural technologies are more suspicious of information asymmetry than adopters. The paper thus provides evidence that the socio-economic dynamics of information asymmetry can have an important inﬂuence on wide spread adoption of technology. Paying more attention to farm level heterogeneity and complexity would help to develop general market management plan and improve the adoption of technology by farmers.

Abstract:In China, agricultural activities are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, ranking second only to another significant source. This presents a significant obstacle to reducing emissions and jeopardizes both the availability of food and the sustainable growth of agriculture. It is primarily the farmers who utilize cultivated land and are thus accountable for the initiation of these emissions. Farmers’ role is significant in adopting green and low-carbon (LC) agricultural production practices, and their actions are directly tied to the achievement of the dual goals of carbon reduction. Understanding their motivations for engaging in LC production and the factors that influence their willingness to do so is important for both theory and practice. In this study, data was collected from 260 questionnaires in 13 counties across five major cities in Shaanxi Province. The purpose was to identify factors that impact farmers’ motivation and willingness to engage in LC agriculture using linear regression analysis. A structural equation model was constructed to better understand the underlying mechanisms that influence farmers’ actions towards LC farming practices. The study’s findings indicate that (1) farmers’ behavior towards LC production practices is notably impacted by internal motivation based on joy and internal motivation based on responsibility (IMR); (2) IMR has the most pronounced effect on farmers’ adoption of LC production practices; (3) the internal motivation based on joy, IMR, behavior attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavior control are related to each other; and (4) the multi-group analysis of the data indicates that the impact of internal motivation based on joy and IMR on adopting sustainable farming practices may vary among different groups. It is essential to support farmers who have strong intrinsic motivation to engage in sustainable agriculture. Additionally, policymakers must promote positive attitudes towards sustainable farming to achieve the desired environmental (LC) objectives.

Planned behavior, social networks, and perceived risks: Understanding farmers' behavior toward precision dairy technologies

Abstract:Precision dairy tools (PDT) can provide timely information on individual cow's physiological and behavioral parameters, which can lead to more efficient management of the dairy farm. Although the economic rationale behind the adoption of PDT has been extensively discussed in the literature, the socio-psychological aspects related to the adoption of these technologies have received far less attention. Therefore, this paper proposes a socio-psychological model that builds upon the theory of planned behavior and develops hypotheses regarding cognitive constructs, their interaction with the farmers' perceived risks and social networks, and their overall influence on adoption. These hypotheses are tested using a generalized structural equation model for (a) the adoption of automatic milking systems (AMS) on the farms and (b) the PDT that are usually adopted with the AMS. Results show that adoption of these technologies is affected directly by intention, and the effects of subjective norms, perceived control, and attitudes on adoption are mediated through intention. A unit increase in perceived control score is associated with an increase in marginal probability of adoption of AMS and PDT by 0.05 and 0.19, respectively. Subjective norms are associated with an increase in marginal probability of adoption of AMS and PDT by 0.009 and 0.05, respectively. These results suggest that perceived control exerts a stronger influence on adoption of AMS and PDT, particularly compared with their subjective norms. Technology-related social networks are associated with an increase in marginal probability of adoption of AMS and PDT by 0.026 and 0.10, respectively. Perceived risks related to AMS and PDT negatively affect probability of adoption by 0.042 and 0.16, respectively, by having negative effects on attitudes, perceived self-confidence, and intentions. These results imply that integrating farmers within knowledge-sharing networks, minimizing perceived risks associated with these technologies, and enhancing farmers' confidence in their ability to use these technologies can significantly enhance uptake.

Abstract:Precision agriculture (PA) is a management system that helps farmers address issues like fertilizer runoff, crop diseases, and declining yields by employing contemporary advanced technology. However, various environmental, socio-economic, and technological challenges hinder its widespread adoption. This study aims to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding of the PA techniques and their practical implementation. The present study proposes a fuzzy fault tree analysis (FFTA) based approach. The approach incorporates farmers' willingness to adopt PA technology, presenting two novel aspects: (i) expert elicitation and fuzzy logic in fault tree analysis to estimate PA implementation failure probability, and (ii) assessment of farmer behavioral responses with uncertainties to identify critical adoption challenges. Results highlight the relative importance of challenges faced by different farmer categories. Key challenges include the high cost of technology (0.7604) and fertilizer dependence among innovators (0.7541), small landholdings among early adopters (0.7583), and resistance to new technology among late adopters (0.7637). Birnbaum's measure effectively captured these challenges' contributions to PA adoption failure. The proposed approach provides an ordered rank list of challenges, guiding stakeholders, researchers, and agricultural bodies to systematically address and mitigate these obstacles, enhancing PA implementation.

Abstract:The study aims to estimate farmers' intentions, barriers, and drivers to use improved grassland. In 2019, following a snowball sampling technique, 240 farmers from district Mansehra of Pakistan were interviewed using a well-structured questionnaire. During interviews, detailed questions were asked about socioeconomic variables, behavior belief, normative belief, and control belief. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) was used to determine farmers' cognitive and socio-psychological behavior to use improved grassland. Comparative to non-users, the grassland users were found with higher age, more education, large herd size, more milking animals, and milk yield. Factors such as large family size, higher dependency burden, less satisfaction from livestock farming, non-farm income, and lack of grassland ownership were the barriers to not using improved grassland in the study area. Path analysis confirmed that farmers who formed favourable attitudes to use improved grassland, had perceived strong social pressure. Moreover, they have had perceived difficulty and likely to believe that they control this behaviour and develop a firm intention to use improved grassland. A favorable attitude was found to use improved grassland, which is emerged from beliefs. Farmers were strongly agreed with statements that the improved grassland is beneficial for pasture availability throughout the year and to increase feed and milk production. Moreover, farmers were strongly encouraged by peer farmers and friends to use improved grassland, and they expressed a high degree of motivation to comply with the referents. Similarly, animal welfare concerns have positive while moral norms and self-identity negatively and significantly correlated with farmers' intention to use improved grassland. The estimated behavior belief, normative belief, and perceived behavior control significantly correlated with farmers' intention. While perceived difficulty negatively correlated with the intention. The study findings suggest to develop a proper framework of extension services to increase awareness of using improved grassland for sustainable pasture production.

Modeling smallholder livestock herders' intentions to adopt climate smart practices: An extended theory of planned behavior

Abstract:Climate change is persistently causing adverse effects to the agriculture sector of developing countries, specifically in Asia. Pakistan is no exception to this effect and is ranked among the top 10 countries, which are most vulnerable to climate change. A huge upcoming challenge is to sustain an equilibrium among production and environmental protection. In this context, adaptation to climate change is considered as a win-win strategy for agriculture sectors in developing countries. However, numerous studies have focused on current farm-level adaptation while a scant interest has been shown on the role of physiological factors in the process of shaping small livestock herders' intentions towards environmental enrichment measures. A possible explanation of their lagging intentions is particular significance as they may comply with requisite climate adaptation measures or not. For deeper understanding, the current study investigates different psychological factors that affect the small livestock herder's intentions on adopting climate smart practices by using theory of planned behavior (TPB) with additional constructs (moral norms, risk perception, and social attributes). To this end, 405 small livestock herders from Punjab, Pakistan, were selected on the basis of multistage random sampling. The results of structural equation model showed that all constructs accounted for 57% of the variances in small livestock herders' adoption intentions. The outcome of this research offers a new indication regarding the interrelationship of numerous variables which are crucial to understand behavioral changes and psychological interventions. Overall attitude was the most prominent construct in the extended TPB model, which is mainly influenced by risk perception awareness. The results suggest that veterinary experts and extension agents should focus on psychological factors to explore different prospects to increase the involvement of livestock herders in environmental enrichment measures with little effort rather than tackling with traditional practices because it will be more likely to affect people's consideration of the external obstructions to act. Findings also offer public and private intervention for enabling technical and policy environment and strengthen social networks to keep livestock herders on track of updates of running government policies to ensure them to adopt climate change measures for their prosperous future.
Analysis of factors influencing family farms' adoption of green prevention and control techniques on an integrative framework of the TPB and NAM

Abstract:The application of green prevention and control techniques (GCTs) is a vital measure for improving the quality of agricultural products and enhancing the safety of the ecological environment and agricultural production. However, realistically, limited by the small-scale, part-time and decentralized business model, the adoption of GCTs by family farms in China faces practical problems such as insufficient internal transformation force and ability, as well as low external supervision efficiency. To reveal the directions of promoting family farms' GCTs adoption behavior, we establish a comprehensive theoretical model through the application of a novel integrated approach combining two dominant psychological theories of behavior change: the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Norm Activation Model (NAM). We apply this framework to targeted research of vegetable growers in Henan Province in China using survey data (sample n = 653) analyzed through structural equation modeling (SEM). The integrated TPB-NAM model provides insight into both internal motivation and external environmental conditions for farmers' predicted adoption of GCTs. First, internal motivation, value cognition and personal norms are all driving factors affecting the GCTs behavioral intention of vegetable family farms. When GCTs are driven by the dual motivations of "self-interest" (personal norms) and "others-interest" (value cognition), personal norms can be activated by two factors: awareness of consequences and responsibility attribution. Furthermore, social norms, capital endowment and government regulation are the pressure and obstacle factors affecting the GCTs application of vegetable family farms. Social norms can indirectly affect the application of GCTs by forming personal norms. In addition, there are differences between the influencing factors and mechanism of GCTs adoption behavior intention of family farms of different sizes. Based on this, we propose some specific policy suggestions from three aspects: enhance value cognition, improve environmental awareness and responsibility perception, fill in the shortcomings of capital endowment, and implement differentiated incentive and restraint policies.
Livelihoods, Technological Constraints, and Low-Carbon Agricultural Technology Preferences of Farmers: Analytical Frameworks of Technology Adoption and Farmer Livelihoods

Abstract:In the context of achieving carbon neutrality, it is scientifically important to quantitatively explore the relationships among livelihoods, technological property constraints, and the selection of low-carbon technologies by farmers to promote agricultural modernization and carbon neutrality in the agricultural sector of China. Based on the scientific classifications of farmer capital and low-carbon agricultural technologies, a farmer technology selection theory model considering capital constraints was developed in this study. Microcosmic survey data were collected from farmers in the Jiangsu province for empirical testing and analyses. A total of four low-carbon technologies related to fertilizer usage and three types of farmers’ livelihoods and their relationships were examined by using a logistic model. The results showed the existence of a significant coupling relationship between the intrinsic decision mechanism involved in selecting low-carbon agricultural technology and the properties of low-carbon agricultural technology for different types of farmers. Significant differences exist in the selection of different low-carbon technologies among large-scale farmers, mid-level part-time farmers, and low-level (generally small) part-time farmers. (1) When selecting technology, large-scale farmers are more inclined to accept capital-intensive, low-carbon technologies, such as new varieties, straw recycling, soil testing, and formulated fertilization. Mid-level part-time farmers are more inclined to accept capital intensive, labor saving, or low risk low-carbon agricultural technologies. In contrast, low-level part-time farmers are inclined to accept labor intensive technologies to reduce capital constraints and agricultural risks. (2) Large-scale farmers and low-level part-time farmers are influenced by household and plot characteristics, while mid-level part-time farmers are more influenced by plot characteristics. (3) Households with capital constraints created by differentiated livelihoods face challenges adopting capital-intensive low-carbon agricultural technologies, such as straw recycling, new varieties, soil testing, and formulated fertilization. However, farmers with stronger constraints in the areas of land and labor are more inclined to accept labor-saving technologies, such as soil testing and formulated fertilization technology. Moreover, farmers with stronger risk preferences tend to accept high-risk technologies, such as new technologies like straw recycling. The results of this study can provide a scientific basis for formulating carbon emission reduction policies and low-carbon technology policies for the agricultural sector.

Abstract:Precision agriculture (PA) technologies have spearheaded a revolution in contemporary farming practices, ushering in an era of sustainability, efficiency, and data-driven agricultural production. This comprehensive examination aims to delve deeply into the intricate dynamics surrounding the adoption of precision agriculture technologies among farmers, synthesizing existing literature, identifying key determinants, barriers, and implications. The adoption of precision agriculture technologies is influenced by a myriad of factors spanning socio-economic, institutional, technological, psychological, and attitudinal dimensions. Socio-economic factors such as farm size, income level, access to credit, and demographic characteristics are pivotal in shaping farmers' decisions to adopt PA technologies. Institutional factors, including government policies, extension services, market structures, and support networks, also wield significant influence over adoption patterns. Technological considerations, such as the complexity, compatibility, and perceived benefits of precision agriculture technologies, impact farmers' adoption decisions. Moreover, psychological factors such as risk perception, innovativeness, and attitudes towards change contribute to shaping farmers' willingness to embrace new technologies. The adoption of precision agriculture technologies holds immense promise for enhancing farm productivity, sustainability, and profitability. By enabling precise management of inputs such as water, fertilizers, pesticides, and seeds, PA technologies help optimize resource use, minimize environmental impact, and maximize yield potential. Furthermore, the integration of advanced data analytics, remote sensing, and IoT (Internet of Things) devices facilitates real-time monitoring, decision-making, and predictive analytics, empowering farmers with actionable insights for improved farm management. However, despite the compelling benefits, the adoption of precision agriculture technologies faces several barriers and challenges. High initial investment costs, limited access to capital, inadequate infrastructure, and technical knowledge gaps pose significant hurdles for farmers, particularly those operating in resource-constrained settings. Concerns regarding data privacy, security, and ownership also contribute to farmers' apprehensions about adopting PA technologies, raising questions about data governance and regulatory frameworks. To overcome these barriers and promote the widespread adoption of precision agriculture technologies, concerted efforts are needed from various stakeholders. Farmer education and training programs play a crucial role in enhancing digital literacy, technical skills, and awareness about the potential benefits of PA technologies. Government policies and incentives, including subsidies, grants, and tax incentives, can help alleviate financial barriers and incentivize adoption. Moreover, collaboration between researchers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers is essential to drive technological innovation, develop user-friendly solutions, and address emerging challenges. Investments in infrastructure, such as rural broadband connectivity and sensor networks, are also imperative to ensure the seamless integration and scalability of precision agriculture technologies across diverse farming landscapes.
Does Farmers' Cognition Enhance Their Enthusiasm for Adopting Sustainable Digital Agricultural Extension Services? Evidence from Rural China

Abstract:The service model of digital agricultural technology extension, as a novel and sustainable approach, plays a pivotal role in facilitating the digital transformation of farmers' agricultural practices. Leveraging survey data from 1475 farmers in China, the study employed a multivariate ordered logit model to investigate the relationship between farmers' cognition and enthusiasm to adopt digital agricultural extension services. The findings revealed that subjective and objective cognitions positively influence farmers' enthusiasm for adopting digital agricultural extension services. Furthermore, policy incentives, as a significant regulatory factor, effectively influence farmers' cognition levels and enthusiasm to adopt digital agricultural extension services. Additionally, female respondents, farmers with higher educational levels, and membership in agricultural cooperatives all facilitate the adoption of these services. This study not only enriches the theoretical framework for agricultural technology promotion, aiding in the understanding of farmers' decision-making processes when adopting digital agricultural extension services, but also provides a deeper insight into the role of digital agricultural technologies in promoting sustainable agricultural development, offering scientific evidence for relevant policy formulation and implementation.

Abstract:Conservation agriculture practices play a pivotal role in augmenting agricultural productivity while concurrently fostering biodiversity, mitigating soil erosion, and enhancing plant nutrition. This study aims to delve into the determinants influencing the adoption behavior of farmers regarding conservation agriculture practices, categorizing them into medium adoption, less adoption, and non-adoption groups. Primary data were meticulously gathered from three distinct regions within the coastal areas of Bangladesh, encompassing a total of 450 respondents. Descriptive statistics were employed to delineate the socio-economic status of farmers, while multinomial logistic regression was utilized to identify factors affecting conservation agriculture adoption. This study also employed to find out the severity of different climate problem faced by the farmers. Analysis of organizational communication patterns revealed that medium adopters maintained a more substantial connection with diverse organizations compared to other groups. Descriptive statistics elucidated that both medium and less adopters of conservation agriculture had undergone more training, possessed higher farm incomes, and exhibited greater levels of education compared to non-adopters. Further exploration through factor analysis unveiled that increased training significantly influenced farmers' decisions to embrace conservation agriculture practices, concurrently enhancing their knowledge of agricultural methodologies. The study identified positive relationships between crop income, cultivable land, different channel communication exposure, climate change perception and training duration with the adoption of conservation agriculture. Finally, the results underscore the importance of organizational monitoring systems and frequent farmer engagement, alongside an augmentation in training initiatives. These measures are posited to yield more favorable outcomes in promoting conservation agriculture practices among farmers. Alongside, Conservation agriculture play a key role for achieving sustainable land use and climate action.

Abstract:As technology advances, people become increasingly dependent on technological tools to increase their work efficiency and productivity. Farming methods in the agriculture sector are also undergoing a shift from conventional to technology-driven modern agriculture practices, primarily because of their benefits and potential to mitigate the effects of climate change. However, the adoption rate of climate-smart agriculture technologies (CSAT) is considered to be very slow. Thus, this study was conducted to examine the factors that lead farmers to adopt CSAT in their agricultural practices. A sample of 185 farmers was used to investigate the main influencing factors in four contexts. The developed model was analyzed using the partial least squares structural equation modeling method. The results of this study suggest that institutions play a critical role as a contextual factor that leads individuals and societies to engage with CSAT, builds confidence, and convinces farmers to adopt these technologies.
Adaptation Implications of Climate-Smart Agriculture in Rural Pakistan

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the drivers of the adoption of climate-smart agricultural (CSA) practices and the impact of their adoption on farm net returns and exposure to risks. We use recent farm-level data from three agroecological zones of Pakistan to estimate a multinomial endogenous switching regression for different CSA practices used to reduce the adverse impact of climate change. These strategies include changing input mix, changing cropping calendar, diversifying seed variety, and soil and water conservation measures. The empirical results show that the adoption of different CSA practices is influenced by average rainfall, previous experience of climate-related shocks, and access to climate change information. The findings further reveal that adoption of CSA practices positively and significantly improves farm net returns and reduces farmers’ exposure to downside risks and crop failure. The results also reveal significant differences in the impacts of CSA practice adoption on farm net returns in different agroecological zones. Thus, policies aimed at achieving sustainability in agricultural production should consider agroecological, specific, climate-smart solutions.

Abstract:Ever-increasing global environmental issues, land degradation, and groundwater contamination may significantly impact the agricultural sector of any country. The situation worsens while the global agricultural sectors are going through the unsustainable intensification of agricultural production powered by chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This trend leads the sector to exercise environmentally friendly technology (EFT). Capital endowment and ecological cognition may significantly impact fostering farmers’ adoption of environmentally friendly technology. The government also tends to change the existing policies to cope with ever-increasing challenges like pollution control, maintaining ecological balance, and supporting agricultural sectors substantially by employing ecological compensation policy. The study’s main objective is to explore the impacts of farmer’s ecological compensation, capital endowment, and ecological cognition for the adoption of EFT. The empirical setup of the study quantifies with survey data of 471 apple farmers from nine counties of Shandong province. The study used Heckman’s two-stage model to craft the findings. The results showed that 52.02% of fruit farmers adopted two environmentally friendly technologies, and 23.99% of fruit farmers adopted three forms of environmentally friendly technologies. At the same time, we have traced that the capital endowment, planting scale, family income, and technical specialization of fruit farmers significantly impact adopting EFT. The study also revealed that understanding ecological compensation policy has a significant positive effect on adopting environmentally friendly technology. Seemingly, ecological compensation policy has a specific regulatory effect on fruit farmers’ capital endowment and ecological cognition. Therefore, it is necessary to extend the demonstration facilities, training, and frequently arrange awareness-building campaigns regarding rural non-point source pollution hazards and improve the cognition level of farmers. The agriculture extension department should strengthen the agricultural value chain facilities to make farmers fully realize the importance of EFT. Government should promote and extend the supports for availing new and innovative EFT at a reasonable price. Moreover, cooperative, financial, and credit organizations need to lead for the smooth transition of EFT. The agricultural cooperatives and formal risk-taking networks should act responsibly for shaping the behavioral factors of farmers.
