Abstract:We present a plane-wave basis set implementation of charge constrained density functional molecular dynamics (CDFT-MD) for simulation of electron transfer reactions in condensed phase systems. Following earlier work of Wu et al. Phys. Rev. A 72, 024502 (2005), the density functional is minimized under the constraint that the charge difference between donor and acceptor is equal to a given value. The classical ion dynamics is propagated on the Born-Oppenheimer surface of the charge constrained state. We investigate the dependence of the constrained energy and of the energy gap on the definition of the charge, and present expressions for the constraint forces. The method is applied to the Ru2+-Ru3+ electron self-exchange reaction in aqueous solution. Sampling the vertical energy gap along CDFT-MD trajectories, and correcting for finite size effects, a reorganization free energy of 1.6 eV is obtained. This is 0.1-0.2 eV lower than a previous estimate based on a continuum model for solvation. smaller value for reorganization free energy can be explained by fact that the Ru-O distances of the divalent and trivalent Ru-hexahydrates are predicted to be more similar in the electron transfer complex than for the separated aqua-ions.
Minimum tracking linear response Hubbard and Hund corrected Density Functional Theory in CP2K

Abstract:We present the implementation of the Hubbard ($U$) and Hund ($J$) corrected Density Functional Theory (DFT+$U$+$J$) functionality in the Quickstep program, which is part of the CP2K suite. The tensorial and Löwdin subspace representations are implemented and compared. Full analytical DFT+$U$+$J$ forces are implemented and benchmarked for the tensorial and Löwdin representations. We also present the implementation of the recently proposed minimum-tracking linear-response method that enables the $U$ and $J$ parameters to be calculated on first principles basis without reference to the Kohn-Sham eigensystem. These implementations are benchmarked against recent results for different materials properties including DFT+$U$ band gap opening in NiO, the relative stability of various polaron distributions in TiO$_2$, the dependence of the calculated TiO$_2$ band gap on +$J$ corrections, and, finally, the role of the +$U$ and +$J$ corrections for the computed properties of a series of the hexahydrated transition metals. Our implementation provides results consistent with those already reported in the literature from comparable methods. We conclude the contribution with tests on the influence of the Löwdin orthonormalization on the occupancies, calculated parameters, and derived properties.

Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Excited-State Forces with the Gaussian and Augmented Plane Wave Method

Abstract:Augmented plane wave methods enable an efficient description of atom-centered or localized features of the electronic density, circumventing high energy cutoffs and thus prohibitive computational costs of pure plane wave formulations. To complement existing implementations for ground-state properties and excitation energies, we present the extension of the Gaussian and augmented plane wave method to excited-state nuclear gradients within the CP2K program package. Benchmarks for a test set of 35 small molecules demonstrate that maximum errors in the nuclear forces for excited states of singlet and triplet spin multiplicity are smaller than 0.1 eV/Å. The method is furthermore applied to the calculation of the zero-phonon line of defective hexagonal boron nitride. This spectral feature is reproduced with an error of 0.2 eV in comparison to GW-Bethe-Salpeter reference computations and of 0.4 eV in comparison to experimental measurements. Accuracy assessments and applications thus demonstrate the potential use of the outlined developments for large-scale applications on excited-state properties of extended systems.

Enabling Ab-Initio Molecular Dynamics under Bias: The CP2K+SMEAGOL Interface for Integrating Density Functional Theory and Non-Equilibrium Green Functions

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) combined with non-equilibrium Greens functions (NEGF) is a powerful approach to model quantum transport under external bias potentials, at reasonable computational cost. In this work we present a new interface between the popular mixed Gaussian/plane wave electronic structure package CP2K and the NEGF code SMEAGOL, the most feature-rich implementation of DFT-NEGF available for CP2K to-date. The CP2K+SMEAGOL interface includes the implementation of current induced forces. We verify this implementation for a variety of systems: an infinite 1D Au wire, a parallel-plate capacitor and a Au-H2-Au junction. We find good agreement with SMEAGOL calculations performed with SIESTA for the same systems, and with the example of a solvated Au wire demonstrate for the first time that DFT-NEGF can be used to perform molecular dynamics simulations under bias of large-scale condensed phase systems under realistic operating conditions.

Plane-Wave-Based Stochastic-Deterministic Density Functional Theory for Extended Systems

Abstract:Traditional finite-temperature Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KSDFT) has an unfavorable scaling with respect to the electron number or at high temperatures. The evaluation of the ground-state density in KSDFT can be replaced by the Chebyshev trace (CT) method. In addition, the use of stochastic orbitals within the CT method leads to the stochastic density functional theory [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 106402 (2013)] (SDFT) and its improved theory, mixed stochastic-deterministic density functional theory [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 055002 (2020)] (MDFT). We have implemented the above four methods within the first-principles package ABACUS. All of the four methods are based on the plane-wave basis set with the use of norm-conserving pseudopotentials and the periodic boundary conditions with the use of k-point sampling in the Brillouin zone. By using the KSDFT calculation results as benchmarks, we systematically evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of the CT, SDFT, and MDFT methods via examining a series of physical properties, which include the electron density, the free energy, the atomic forces, stress, and density of states for a few condensed phase systems. The results suggest that our implementations of CT, SDFT, and MDFT not only reproduce the KSDFT results with a high accuracy, but also exhibit several advantages over the tradition KSDFT method. We expect these methods can be of great help in studying high-temperature and large-size extended systems such as warm dense matter and dense plasma.

Abstract:Most chemical processes happen at a local scale where only a subset of molecular orbitals is directly involved and only a subset of covalent bonds may be rearranged. To model such reactions, Density Functional Theory (DFT) is often inadequate, and the use of computationally more expensive correlated wavefunction (WF) methods is required for accurate results. Mixed-resolution approaches backed by quantum embedding theory have been used extensively to approach this imbalance. Based on the frozen density embedding freeze-and-thaw algorithm, we describe an approach to embed complete active space self-consistent field simulations run in the OpenMolcas code in a DFT environment calculated in CP2K without requiring any external tools. This makes it possible to study a local, active part of a chemical system in a larger and relatively static environment with a computational cost balanced between the accuracy of a WF method and the efficiency of DFT, which we test on environment-subsystem pairs. Finally, we apply the implementation to an oxygen molecule leaving an aluminum (111) surface and a ruthenium(IV) oxide (110) surface.

Abstract:We present a formalism of charge self-consistent dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) in combination with density functional theory (DFT) within the linear combination of numerical atomic orbitals (LCNAO) framework. We implemented the charge self-consistent DFT+DMFT formalism by interfacing a full-potential all-electron DFT code with three hybridization expansion-based continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solvers. The benchmarks on several 3d, 4f and 5f strongly correlated electron systems validated our formalism and implementation. Furthermore, within the LCANO framework, our formalism is general and the code architecture is extensible, so it can work as a bridge merging different LCNAO DFT packages and impurity solvers to do charge self-consistent DFT+DMFT calculations.

Computing total energies in complex materials using charge self-consistent DFT+DMFT

Abstract:We have formulated and implemented a fully charge-self-consistent density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory methodology which enables an efficient calculation of the total energy of realistic correlated electron systems. The density functional portion of the calculation uses a plane wave basis set within the projector augmented wave method enabling study of systems with large, complex unit cells. The dynamical mean field portion of the calculation is formulated using maximally localized Wannier functions, enabling a convenient implementation which is independent of the basis set used in the density functional portion of the calculation. The importance of using a correct double counting term is demonstrated. A generalized form of the standard double counting correction, which we refer to as the $U^\prime$ form, is described in detail and used. For comparison the density functional plus U method is implemented within the same framework including the generalized double counting. The formalism is validated via a calculation of the metal-insulator and structural phase diagrams of the rare-earth nickelate perovskites as functions of applied pressure and A-site rare-earth ions. The calculated density functional plus dynamical mean field results are found to be consistent with experiment. The density functional plus U method is shown to grossly overestimate the tendency for bond-disproportionation and insulating behavior.

Abstract:Bridging the gap between first principles methods and empirical schemes, the density functional based tight-binding method (DFTB) has become a versatile tool in predictive atomistic simulations over the past years. One of the major restrictions of this method is the limitation to local or gradient corrected exchange-correlation functionals. This excludes the important class of hybrid or long-range corrected functionals, which are advantageous in thermochemistry, as well as in the computation of vibrational, photoelectron and optical spectra. The present work provides a detailed account of the implementation of DFTB for a long-range corrected functional in generalized Kohn-Sham theory. We apply the method to a set of organic molecules and compare ionization potentials and electron affinities with the original DFTB method and higher level theory. The new scheme cures the significant overpolarization in electric fields found for local DFTB, which parallels the functional dependence in first principles density functional theory (DFT). At the same time the computational savings with respect to full DFT calculations are not compromised as evidenced by numerical benchmark data.

Approaching the Basis Set Limit for DFT Calculations Using an Environment-Adapted Minimal Basis with Perturbation Theory: Formulation, Proof of Concept, and a Pilot Implementation

Abstract:Recently developed density functionals have good accuracy for both thermochemistry (TC) and non-covalent interactions (NC) if very large atomic orbital basis sets are used. To approach the basis set limit with potentially lower computational cost, a new self-consistent field (SCF) scheme is presented that employs minimal adaptive basis (MAB) functions. The MAB functions are optimized on each atomic site by minimizing a surrogate function. High accuracy is obtained by applying a perturbative correction (PC) to the MAB calculation, similar to dual basis approaches. Compared to exact SCF results, using this MAB-SCF (PC) approach with the same large target basis set produces <0.15 kcal/mol root-mean-square deviations for most of the tested TC datasets, and <0.1 kcal/mol for most of the NC datasets. The performance of density functionals near the basis set limit can be even better reproduced. With further improvement to its implementation, MAB-SCF (PC) is a promising lower-cost substitute for conventional large-basis calculations as a method to approach the basis set limit of modern density functionals.
Consistent Improvement on Both Exchange and Correlation within Hybrid Multiconfiguration Pair-density Functional Theory: tB4LYP

Abstract:The great success of hybrid density functional approximations, e.g.~B3LYP and PBE0, is demonstrated by their substantial improvements over their parent methods, i.e.~the Hartree-Fock approximation and the generalized gradient approximation. They also surpass the second-order M\o{}ller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) having a much higher computational cost. Here, we generalize the linear scheme of hybrid multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory (HMC-PDFT) by introducing a cross-entropy approximation to achieve a balanced description of the static and dynamic correlation effects, providing a consistent improvement in describing both exchange and correlation energies. We demonstrated that the B3LYP-like translated on-top functional (tB4LYP) established within the new hybrid scheme is not only more accurate than the parent methods of the complete active space self consistent field (CASSCF) and the pure and hybrid MC-PDFT functional (tBLYP and tB3LYP), but also outdoes the complete active space second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2), which is one of the most popular multi-reference wave-function methods in quantum chemistry. Given that the computational cost of tB4LYP is much cheaper than that of CASPT2, we recommend tB4LYP for the study of complex molecular systems where dynamic and static correlation effects are of comparable importance.

Abstract:The method of dispersion correction as an add-on to standard Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT-D) has been refined regarding higher accuracy, broader range of applicability, and less empiricism. The main new ingredients are atom-pairwise specific dispersion coefficients and cutoff radii that are both computed from first principles. The coefficients for new eighth-order dispersion terms are computed using established recursion relations. System (geometry) dependent information is used for the first time in a DFT-D type approach by employing the new concept of fractional coordination numbers (CN). They are used to interpolate between dispersion coefficients of atoms in different chemical environments. The method only requires adjustment of two global parameters for each density functional, is asymptotically exact for a gas of weakly interacting neutral atoms, and easily allows the computation of atomic forces. Three-body nonadditivity terms are considered. The method has been assessed on standard benchmark sets for inter- and intramolecular noncovalent interactions with a particular emphasis on a consistent description of light and heavy element systems. The mean absolute deviations for the S22 benchmark set of noncovalent interactions for 11 standard density functionals decrease by 15%-40% compared to the previous (already accurate) DFT-D version. Spectacular improvements are found for a tripeptide-folding model and all tested metallic systems. The rectification of the long-range behavior and the use of more accurate C(6) coefficients also lead to a much better description of large (infinite) systems as shown for graphene sheets and the adsorption of benzene on an Ag(111) surface. For graphene it is found that the inclusion of three-body terms substantially (by about 10%) weakens the interlayer binding. We propose the revised DFT-D method as a general tool for the computation of the dispersion energy in molecules and solids of any kind with DFT and related (low-cost) electronic structure methods for large systems.

Abstract:Simulations based on electronic structure theory naturally include polarization and have no transferability problems. In particular, Kohn–Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT) has become the method of reference for ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of condensed matter systems. However, the high computational cost often poses strict limits on the affordable system size as well as on the extension of sampling (number of configurations). In this work, we propose an improvement to the subsystem density functional theory approach, known as the Kim–Gordon (KG) scheme, thus enabling the sampling of configurations for condensed molecular systems keeping the KS-DFT level accuracy at a fraction of computer time. Our scheme compensates the known KG shortcomings of the electronic kinetic energy term by adding a simple correction and can match KS-DFT accuracy in energies and forces. The computationally cheap correction is determined by means of a machine learning procedure. The proposed KG scheme is applied within a linear scaling self-consistent field formalism and is assessed by a series of molecular dynamics simulations of liquid water under different conditions. Enhancing Density Functional Theory for Static Correlation in Large Molecules

Abstract:A critical challenge for density functional theory (DFT) in practice is its limited ability to treat static electron correlation, leading to errors in its prediction of charges, multiradicals, and reaction barriers. Recently, we combined one- and two-electron reduced density matrix theories with DFT to obtain a universal $O(N^3)$ generalization of DFT for static correlation. In this Letter, we enhance the theory's treatment of large molecules by renormalizing the trace of the two-electron identity matrix in the correction using Cauchy-Schwarz inequalities of the electron-electron repulsion matrix. We apply the resulting functional theory to linear hydrogen chains as well as the prediction of the singlet-triplet gap and equilibrium geometries of a series of acenes. This renormalization of the generalized DFT retains the $O(N^{3})$ computational scaling of DFT while enabling the accurate treatment of static correlation for a broad range of molecules and materials.

Systematic Evaluation of Counterpoise Correction in Density Functional Theory

Abstract:A widespread belief persists that the Boys-Bernardi function counterpoise (CP) procedure "overcorrects" supramolecular interaction energies for the effects of basis-set superposition error. To the extent that this is true for correlated wave function methods, it is usually an artifact of low-quality basis sets. The question has not been considered systematically in the context of density functional theory, however, where basis-set convergence is generally less problematic. We present a systematic assessment of the CP procedure for a representative set of functionals and basis sets, considering both benchmark data sets of small dimers and larger supramolecular complexes. The latter include layered composite polymers with ∼150 atoms and ligand-protein models with ∼300 atoms. Provided that CP correction is used, we find that intermolecular interaction energies of nearly complete-basis quality can be obtained using only double-ζ basis sets. This is less expensive as compared to triple-ζ basis sets without CP correction. CP-corrected interaction energies are less sensitive to the presence of diffuse basis functions as compared to uncorrected energies, which is important because diffuse functions are expensive and often numerically problematic for large systems. Our results upend the conventional wisdom that CP "overcorrects" for basis-set incompleteness. In small basis sets, CP correction is mandatory in order to demonstrate that the results do not rest on error cancellation.
Extended Hartree-Fock method based on pair density functional theory

Abstract:A practical electronic structure method in which a two-body functional is the fundamental variable is constructed. The basic formalism of our method is equivalent to Hartree-Fock density matrix functional theory [M. Levy in {\it Density Matrices and Density Functionals}, Ed. R. Erdahl and V. H. Smith Jr., D. Reidel, (1987)]. The implementation of the method consists of solving Hartree-Fock equations and using the resulting orbitals to calculate two-body corrections to account for correlation. The correction terms are constructed so that the energy of the system in the absence of external potentials can be made to correspond to approximate expressions for the energy of the homogeneous electron gas. In this work the approximate expressions we use are based on the high-density limit of the homogeneous electron gas. Self-interaction is excluded from the two-body functional itself. It is shown that our pair density based functional does not suffer from the divergence present in many density functionals when homogeneous scaling is applied. Calculations based on our pair density functional lead to quantitative results for the correlation energies of atomic test cases.

Abstract:We present a fully charge self-consistent implementation of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) combined with density functional theory (DFT) for electronic structure calculations of materials with strong electronic correlations. The implementation uses the Quantum ESPRESSO package for the density functional theory calculations, the Wannier90 code for the up-/downfolding and the TRIQS software package for setting up and solving the DMFT equations. All components are available under open source licenses, are MPI-parallelized, fully integrated in the respective packages, and use an hdf5 archive interface to eliminate file parsing. We show benchmarks for three different systems that demonstrate excellent agreement with existing DFT+DMFT implementations in other ab-initio electronic structure codes.
Improving results by improving densities: Density-corrected density functional theory

Abstract:DFT calculations have become widespread in both chemistry and materials, because they usually provide useful accuracy at much lower computational cost than wavefunction-based methods. All practical DFT calculations require an approximation to the unknown exchange-correlation energy, which is then used self-consistently in the Kohn-Sham scheme to produce an approximate energy from an approximate density. Density-corrected DFT is simply the study of the relative contributions to the total energy error. In the vast majority of DFT calculations, the error due to the approximate density is negligible. But with certain classes of functionals applied to certain classes of problems, the density error is sufficiently large as to contribute to the energy noticeably, and its removal leads to much better results. These problems include reaction barriers, torsional barriers involving $\pi$-conjugation, halogen bonds, radicals and anions, most stretched bonds, etc. In all such cases, use of a more accurate density significantly improves performance, and often the simple expedient of using the Hartree-Fock density is enough. This article explains what DC-DFT is, where it is likely to improve results, and how DC-DFT can produce more accurate functionals. We also outline challenges and prospects for the field.

Small Basis Set Density Functional Theory Method for Cost-efficient, Large-scale Condensed Matter Simulations

Abstract:We present an efficient first-principles based method geared towards reliably predicting the structures of solid materials across the periodic table. To this end, we use a density functional theory (DFT) baseline with a compact, near-minimal \emph{min+s} basis set, yielding low computational costs and memory demands. Since the use of such small basis set leads to systematic errors in chemical bond lengths, we develop a linear pairwise correction (LPC), available for elements $Z$ = 1-86 (excluding the lanthanide series), parameterized for use with the PBE exchange-correlation functional. We demonstrate the reliability of this corrected approach for equilibrium volumes across the periodic table and the transferability to differently coordinated environments and multi-elemental crystals. We examine relative energies, forces and stresses in geometry optimizations and MD simulations.
