Abstract:Plasmonics could provide compact and powerful solutions for manipulating light in deep-subwavelength dimensions, which is promising for a great range of nanophotonic technologies such as plasmonic rulers and sensors. However, the effective area of enhanced localized field induced by surface plasmon polaritons is typically restricted to the structural boundaries. In this work, we propose a method to generate high quality-factor extended electromagnetic fields via hybridizing the super-radiant state and the quasi bound state in the continuum of graphene metasurfaces. The coupling interaction involved operates as a three-level system with multiple sharp resonances immune to the polarization, which holds great promise for developing nanodevices with high sensing capacity in two dimensions.

Abstract:Graphene and graphene-like two-dimensional nanomaterials have aroused tremendous research interest in recent years due to their unique electronic, optical, and mechanical properties associated with their planar structure. Aptamers have exhibited many advantages as molecular recognition elements for sensing devices compared to traditional antibodies. The marriage of two-dimensional nanomaterials and aptamers has emerged many ingenious aptasensing strategies for applications in the fields of clinical diagnosis and food safety. This review highlights current advances in the development and application of two-dimensional nanomaterials-based aptasensors with the focus on two main signal-transducing mechanisms, i.e. electrochemical and optical. A special attention is paid to graphene, a one-atom thick layer of graphite with exceptional properties, representing a fastgrowing field of research. In view of the unique properties of two-dimensional nanostructures and their inherent advantages of synthetic aptamers, we expect that high-performance two-dimensional nanomaterials-based aptasensing devices will find extensive applications in environmental monitoring, biomedical diagnostics, and food safety.

Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized SPR (LSPR) effects have been shown as the principles of some highlysensitive sensors in recent decades. Due to the advances in nano-fabrication technology, the plasmon nano-array sensors based on SPR and LSPR phenomena have been widely used in chemical and bioloical analysis. Sensing with surface-enhanced field and sensing for refractive index changes are able to identify the analytes quantitatively and qualitatively. With the newly developed ultrasensitive plasmonic biosensors, platforms with excellent performance have been built for various biomedical applications, including point-of-care diagnosis and personalized medicine. In addition, flexible integration of plasmonics nano-arrays and combining them with electrochemical sensing have significantly enlarged the application scenarios of the plasmonic nano-array sensors, as well as improved the sensing accuracy.

Abstract:Graphene plasmon has attracted extensive interest due to the unprecedented electromagnetic confinement, long propagation distance, and tunable plasmonic frequency. Successful applications of graphene plasmon as infrared sensors have been recently demonstrated, yet they are mainly focused on solid/solid and solid/gas interfaces analysis. Herein, we, for the first time, propose a graphene plasmon-enhanced infrared sensor based on attenuated total reflection configuration for in situ analysis of aqueous-phase molecules. This IR sensor includes a boron-doped graphene (BG) nanodisk array fabricated on top of a ZnSe prism surface that supports attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRA). Our ATR-SEIRA platform is efficient and straightforward for in situ and label-free monitoring of the interaction of biomolecules without interference from the environments, allowing for the extraction of instant spectroscopic information in a complex biological event. Utilizing the near-field enhancement of graphene plasmon, the binding interaction of L-selectin with its aptamer as a demonstration has been investigated to evaluate the specific protein recognition process. The detection limit of the target protein reaches 0.5 nM. Our work demonstrates that chemical-doped graphene plasmon combined with ATR-SEIRA is a promising signal enhancement platform for in situ aqueous-phase biosensing.
Expression of TRK-T 1 Oncogene Induces Differentiation of PC 12 Cells ’

Abstract:Abstrad The TRK-T1 oncogene, isolated from a human thyroid carcinoma, represents a rearranged form of the high affinity nerve growth fador (NGF) receptor encoded by the NTRK1 gene; it is created by an intrachromosomal rearrangement fusing the NTRK1 tyrosine kinase domain to the 5’ portion of the TPR gene. We have investigated the effed of the TRK-T1 oncogene in PC12 cells, a model system for studying neuronal differentiation and the mechanism of adion of NGF. Here, we report that, in PC12 cells, the TRK-T1 oncogene has a differentiating effed that resembles that of NGF and requires the phosphorylation of the oncoprotein. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that TRK-T1, as well as the original TRK oncogene, induces PC12 differentiation by mimicking the adion of NGF bound to its receptor.

Abstract:This work explores the transformative role of graphene in enhancing the performance of surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based biosensors. The motivation for this review stems from the growing interest in the unique properties of graphene, such as high surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, and versatile functionalization capabilities, which offer significant potential to improve the sensitivity, specificity, and stability of SPR biosensors. This review systematically analyzes studies published between 2010 and 2023, covering key metrics of biosensor performance. The findings reveal that the integration of graphene consistently enhances sensitivity. Specificity, although less frequently reported numerically, showed promising results, with high specificity achieved at sub-nanomolar concentrations. Stability enhancements are also significant, attributed to the protective properties of graphene and improved biomolecule adsorption. Future research should focus on mechanistic insights, optimization of integration techniques, practical application testing, scalable fabrication methods, and comprehensive comparative studies. Our findings provide a foundation for future research, aiming to further optimize and harness the unique physical properties of graphene to meet the demands of sensitive, specific, stable, and rapid biosensing in various practical applications.

Abstract:A monomial Henon mapping is defined as the well- known two-dimensional Henon map with the quadratic term replaced by a monomial. This paper introduces a conjecture about monomial Henon mappings: Even Henon mappings are chaotic and odd Henon mappings are not chaotic in the first quadrant of the bifurcation parameter space. This conjecture is based on numerical simulations of this type of map.

Abstract:In this work, a plasmonic metasurface for ultra-sensitive biosensing based on graphene-transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC)-graphene hybrid nanostructures are designed. The coating of the two-dimensional nanosheets plays an important role for the sensitivity enhancement of the biosensors at the atomic scale. To achieve the maximum plasmon resonance energy transfer, different parameters of the hybrid nanostructures are systematically investigated including the material types and the number of TMDC layers. The important characteristics of plasmonic biosensors such as dark minimum reflectivity, sharp differential phase change, high sensitivity and narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) are carefully studied in this work to demonstrate the improved surface plasmon resonance sensing performances of the TMDC-based metasurfaces. The graphene-TMDC-graphene configurations with four different types of materials including MoS2/WS2/MoSe2/WSe2 are optimized respectively for potential sensing applications. Based on our theoretical analysis, the enhanced maximum sensitivity of graphene-TMDC-graphene hybrid nanostructure is three orders of magnitude higher than that of the conventional bare metallic substrate.

Abstract:The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique is a remarkable tool, with applications in almost every area of science and technology. Sensing is the foremost and majorly explored application of SPR technique. The last few decades have seen a surge in SPR sensor research related to sensitivity enhancement and innovative target materials for specificity. Nanotechnological advances have augmented the SPR sensor research tremendously by employing nanomaterials in the design of SPR-based sensors, owing to their manifold properties. Carbon-based nanomaterials, like graphene and its derivatives (graphene oxide (GO)), (reduced graphene oxide (rGO)), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and their nanocomposites, have revolutionized the field of sensing due to their extraordinary properties, such as large surface area, easy synthesis, tunable optical properties, and strong compatible adsorption of biomolecules. In SPR based sensors carbon-based nanomaterials have been used to act as a plasmonic layer, as the sensitivity enhancement material, and to provide the large surface area and compatibility for immobilizing various biomolecules, such as enzymes, DNA, antibodies, and antigens, in the design of the sensing layer. In this review, we report the role of carbon-based nanomaterials in SPR-based sensors, their current developments, and challenges.

Highly sensitive graphene biosensors based on surface plasmon resonance.

Abstract:A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based graphene biosensor is presented. It consists of a graphene sheet coated above a gold thin film, which has been proposed and experimentally fabricated recently [ChemPhysChem 11, 585 (2010)]. The biosensor uses attenuated total reflection (ATR) method to detect the refractive index change near the sensor surface, which is due to the adsorption of biomolecules. Our calculations show that the proposed graphene-on-gold SPR biosensor (with L graphene layers) is (1 + 0.025 L) x gamma (where gamma > 1) times more sensitive than the conventional gold thin film SPR biosensor. The improved sensitivity is due to increased adsorption of biomolecules on graphene (represented by the factor gamma) and the optical property of graphene.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructure biosensors based on metal are a powerful tool in the biosensing field. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) can be classified into localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and propagating surface plasmon polariton (PSPP), based on the transmission mode. Initially, the physical principles of LSPR and PSPP are elaborated. In what follows, the recent development of the biosensors related to SPR principle is summarized. For clarity, they are categorized into three groups according to the sensing principle: (i) inherent resonance-based biosensors, which are sensitive to the refractive index changes of the surroundings; (ii) plasmon nanoruler biosensors in which the distances of the nanostructure can be changed by biomolecules at the nanoscale; and (iii) surface-enhanced Raman scattering biosensors in which the nanostructure serves as an amplifier for Raman scattering signals. Moreover, the advanced application of single-molecule detection is discussed in terms of metal nanoparticle and nanopore structures. The review concludes by providing perspectives on the future development of plasmonic nanostructure biosensors.

Abstract:In this research, we proposed a highly tunable hybrid plasmonic biosensor for identifying molecule fingerprints of proteins in the infrared range. The device is composed of a photonic band-gap structure and a cavity. The plasmonic energy is confined inside the cavity to enhance the light-analyte interactions. A layer of graphene is placed on the bottom surface of the cavity that is filled with analytes for detection. Our device has a high value of effective sensitivity that is defined as the ratio of the resonant frequency shift to the change of effective refractive index when the cavity is loaded with an analyte. The effective refractive index takes into account the effects of both the cavity structure and the optical property of the analyte. Another feature of our device is that a wide-ranging electrical tunability can be realized by applying various values of bias voltage to the graphene. The resonant frequency can be tuned for sensing different analytes without redesigning and refabricating the device. In addition, the graphene tunability can improve the sensitivity in detecting the non-targeted analytes. A prototype was designed based on photonic theory and fabricated via bottom-up lithography techniques. The research results are expected to be beneficial for nanometer-range bio-identifications and infrared optical sensors.

Abstract:Imaging-based molecular fingerprints detection in mid-infrared region has emerged as a promising technique for the chemical identification of various molecules through pixelated dielectric metasurfaces. However, the integration and practical application of the device are hindered by lack of tunability and insufficient sensitivity. In this context, a compact metasurface nanophotonic sensor consisting of graphene nanoribbon arrays is proposed and verified numerically by using a series of gate-tunable sharp localized surface plasmon resonances, which shows ultrasensitive imaging-based molecular fingerprints detection in mid-infrared region. The graphene metasurface is excited by p-polarized light at an oblique angle and supports extremely confined surface plasmons matching nanoscale samples. Especially, the absorption signals of target molecules are significantly enhanced under the oblique incidence of light, and the absorption signatures of even 1% A/G-IgG protein bilayer physisorption can be observed in the absorbance signals calculated from light intensity spectra. Moreover, the imaging-based detection of ultra-sharp absorption signature, such as polyethylene molecule, is also achieved by the graphene/silicon grating hybrid structure with sharper surface plasmon resonances. The gate-tunable and extremely confined graphene plasmons will provide sensitive and integrated mid-infrared spectroscopy devices.

Abstract:Graphene has attracted a lot of attentions due to the unique electrical and optical properties. Compared with the noble metal plasmons in the visible and near-infrared frequencies, graphene can support surface plasmons in the lower frequencies of terahertz and mid-infrared and it demonstrates an extremely large confinement at the surface because of the particular electronic band structures. Especially, the surface conductivity of graphene can be tuned by either chemical doping or electrostatic gating. These features make graphene a promising candidate for plasmonics, biosensing and transformation optics. Furthermore, the combination of graphene and metasurfaces presents a powerful tunability for exotic electromagnetic properties, where the metasurfaces with the highly-localized fields offer a platform to enhance the interaction between the incident light and graphene and facilitate a deep modulation. In this paper, we provide an overview of the key properties of graphene, such as the surface conductivity, the propagating surface plasmon polaritons, and the localized surface plasmons, and the hybrid graphene/metasurfaces, either metallic and dielectric metasurfaces, from terahertz to near-infrared frequencies. Finally, there is a discussion for the current challenges and future goals.

Abstract:Nanophotonics has been widely utilized in enhanced molecularspectroscopy or mediated chemical reaction, which has major applications in the field of enhancing sensing and enables opportunities in developing healthcare monitoring. This review presents an updated overview of the recent exciting advances of plasmonic biosensors in the healthcare area. Manufacturing, enhancements and applications of plasmonic biosensors are discussed, with particular focus on nanolisted main preparation methods of various nanostructures, such as chemical synthesis, lithography, nanosphere lithography, nanoimprint lithography, etc., and describing their respective advances and challenges from practical applications of plasmon biosensors. Based on these sensing structures, different types of plasmonic biosensors are summarized regarding detecting cancer biomarkers, body fluid, temperature, gas and COVID-19. Last, the existing challenges and prospects of plasmonic biosensors combined with machine learning, mega data analysis and prediction are surveyed.

Abstract:We present the application of graphene as a plasmon sensor. It was found that the electronic transport of chemical vapor deposition CVD-synthesized graphene is sensitive to surface plasmons generated by the illumination of metal nanoparticles. The observed change in electronic conduction can be up to seven times larger than the intrinsic photoresponse of graphene. A study of the mechanism revealed local field-assisted oxygen desorption induced by surface plasmons to be the cause of this intriguing behavior. A detailed investigation of the wavelength and spacing dependence of the plasmon-graphene coupling proves that graphene can be used as a sensitive, high resolution electronic plasmon detector. This finding shows the potential of devices exploiting the novel properties of graphene and surface plasmons.

Abstract:Graphene has a unique planar structure, as well as excellent electronic properties, and has attracted a great deal of interest from scientists. Graphene and its derivatives display advantageous characteristics as a biosensing platform due to their high surface area, good biocompatibility and ease of functionalization. Moreover, graphene and its derivatives exhibit excellent optical properties; thus they are considered to be promising and attractive candidates for bioimaging, mainly of cells and tissues. Following an introduction and a discussion of the optical properties of graphene, this review assesses the methods for engineering the functions of graphene and its derivatives. Specific examples are given on the use of graphene and its derivatives in fluorescence bioimaging, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) imaging, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Finally, the prospects and further developments in this exciting field of graphene-based materials are suggested.

Abstract:Plasmon in graphene possesses many unique properties. It originates from the collective motion of massless Dirac fermions, and the carrier density dependence is distinctively different from conventional plasmons. In addition, graphene plasmon is highly tunable and shows strong energy confinement capability. Most intriguingly, as an atom-thin layer, graphene and its plasmon are very sensitive to the immediate environment. Graphene plasmons strongly couple to polar phonons of the substrate, molecular vibrations of the adsorbates, and lattice vibrations of other atomically thin layers. In this review, we present the most important advances in graphene plasmonics field. The topics include terahertz plasmons, mid-infrared plasmons, plasmon-phonon interactions, and potential applications. Graphene plasmonics opens an avenue for reconfigurable metamaterials and metasurfaces; it is an exciting and promising new subject in the nanophotonics and plasmonics research field.

Abstract:Graphene’s unique physical structure, as well as its chemical and electrical properties, make it ideal for use in sensor technologies. In the past years, novel sensing platforms have been proposed with pristine and modified graphene with nanoparticles and polymers. Several of these platforms were used to immobilize biomolecules, such as antibodies, DNA, and enzymes to create highly sensitive and selective biosensors. Strategies to attach these biomolecules onto the surface of graphene have been employed based on its chemical composition. These methods include covalent bonding, such as the coupling of the biomolecules via the 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride and N-hydroxysuccinimide reactions, and physisorption. In the literature, several detection methods are employed; however, the most common is electrochemical. The main reason for researchers to use this detection approach is because this method is simple, rapid and presents good sensitivity. These biosensors can be particularly useful in life sciences and medicine since in clinical practice, biosensors with high sensitivity and specificity can significantly enhance patient care, early diagnosis of diseases and pathogen detection. In this review, we will present the research conducted with antibodies, DNA molecules and, enzymes to develop biosensors that use graphene and its derivatives as scaffolds to produce effective biosensors able to detect and identify a variety of diseases, pathogens, and biomolecules linked to diseases.

Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance biosensors are drawing attention due to their real-time, label-free, and rapid characteristic. To detect trace biomarkers (ct-DNA, mi-RNA, PD-L1), plasmonic and metal oxide nanoparticles have been utilized for signal amplification and have shown exciting results. To achieve uniform, reproducible, simple, and sensitive sensor interface construction, two-dimensional materials such as graphene and molybdenum sulfide have opened a research upsurge and show a great possibility in the surface plasmon resonance biosensing field due to their unique large specific surface area, excellent in-plane electron transport effect, and singular optical properties. Here, we provide an overview of the recent research progress on two-dimensional materials in the field of surface plasmon resonance biosensors, including the optoelectronic properties of two-dimensional materials, sensitivity enhancement mechanism, and interface construction. Finally, the challenges and development directions of detection sensitivity enhancement are summarized and prospected. Our work will provide a useful platform to expand the further application of two-dimensional materials in surface plasmon resonance biosensors.
