Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) can pose ecological risk to the environment and have the potential to negatively affect human health, raising serious public concerns. It is recognized that MPs could act as a vector for various environmental pollutants including heavy metals and potentially influencing their mobility, fate, and bioavailabilty in the environment. However, knowledge on the mechanisms underpinning the interaction processes between MPs and heavy metals is far from clear. This review discusses the effects of MPs on the adsorption/desorption, speciation and bioavailability, and toxicity of various heavy metals. The present review also systematically identifies the environmental factors (e.g., pH, ionic strength, and organic matters) that could affect their interaction processes. This work aims to establish a meaningful perspective for a comprehensive understanding of the indirect ecological risks of MPs as vectors for contaminants. The work also provides a reference for the development of better regulatory strategies in mitigating the negative effects caused by the co-existence of MPs and heavy metals.

Abstract:The environmental impacts of plastic have attracted the interest of the scientists , media, and policymakers, but the impact of microplastics (MPs) on our environment remains largely unknown. These novel pollutants are so widespread that the scientific community has defined the present historical epoch as "The Plasticene". There is growing concern over the bioaccumulation and entry of these miniature plastic particles released from almost every article of daily use into the food chains, which will ultimately contaminate the human population. Given the presence of these pollutants in almost every strata and biome of the earth, adsorption of other toxic pollutants and generation of novel categories of chemicals, MP pose an eminent challenge to almost every biotic community. At present times, we have very little knowledge about the possible effects of micropollutants as risk assessment and risk management rely on standardized data and reliable methodology adopted, so in present times it is impossible to evaluate the toxic response and deleterious effects on biotic communities. The detailed understanding of origin, exposure pathways, toxic response of biota, remediation options, and precautionary operations are of prime importance for averting the plastic disaster. MPs significant affect rooting ability of plants, reduce photosynthetic ability by dysregulation of chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b ratios and cause imbalance in carbon/nitrogen balance. MPs have most prominent effect on aquatic animals where they cause feeding disruption, alterations in metabolism, hormonal imbalance and henceforth reproductive problems. On cellular levels MPs causes cytotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, immune dysregulation, neurotoxicity and genotoxicity. MPs have been found to affect the microbes which results in replacement of beneficial organisms by harmful organisms at niche areas and MPs acts as vehicle and transport agents for transport and proliferation of harmful organism like Ostreopsis and Coolia and Vibrio genera. Owing to the deleterious effects on environment and biota, various remedial measures proposed by researchers includes biodegradation, coagulation, photo-catalytic degradation and thermal degradation. Therefore, current manuscript attempts to review the status of these pollutants in various biomes of the biosphere, their possible toxic effects on residents of the hydrosphere, atmosphere, and lithosphere, their effect on human health, and various remediation processes with the intention of special and surgical emphasis on future research in the area for fulfillment of the knowledge gap.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are developing as persistent pollutants that are causing significant concern in terms of environmental health. A microplastic is a particle of plastic that is less than 5 mm in diameter, which has penetrated and harmed the environment. MPs have been the subject of numerous analyses, including several adverse assessments; however, most of these studies have focused on their presence in coastal environments. The current state of knowledge regarding the characteristics, occurrences, and potential impact of MPs in the terrestrial ecosystem is incomplete. The goal of this study is to undertake a thorough review of existing knowledge and scientific publications on MP occurrences in the environment, their fate and mobility, and their consequences, as well as to explore such discoveries. MPs have been elaborately discussed in this review in terms of their occurrences, features, and origins in the oceans, freshwater, sediments, soils, and the atmosphere, along with the data obtained from experiments and models on the fate and mobility of MPs in the environment. This paper also includes research data on the environmental toxicity, bioavailability, and bioaccumulation of MPs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), particles under 5 mm, pervade water, soil, sediment, and air due to increased plastic production and improper disposal, posing global environmental and health risks. Examining their distribution, quantities, fate, and transport is crucial for effective management. Several studies have explored MPs' sources, distribution, transport, and biological impacts, primarily focusing on the marine environment. However, there is a need for a comprehensive review of all environmental systems together for enhanced pollution control. This review critically examines the occurrence, distribution, fate, and transport of MPs in the following environments: freshwater, marine, and terrestrial ecosystems. The concentration of MPs is highly variable in the environment, ranging from negligible to significant amounts (0.003–519.223 items/liter in water and 0–18,000 items/kg dry weight sediment, respectively). Predominantly, these MPs manifest as fibers and fragments, with primary polymer types including polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene, and polyethylene terephthalate. A complex interplay of natural and anthropogenic actions, including wastewater treatment plant discharges, precipitation, stormwater runoff, inadequate plastic waste management, and biosolid applications, influences MPs' presence and distribution. Our critical synthesis of existing literature underscores the significance of factors such as wind, water flow rates, settling velocities, wave characteristics, plastic morphology, density, and size in determining MPs' transport dynamics in surface and subsurface waters. Furthermore, this review identifies research gaps, both in experimental and simulation, and outlines pivotal avenues for future exploration in the realm of MPs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are now ubiquitous in global ecosystem, therefore all biota is at risk of exposure and potential toxicity. In this study, we presented an overview of information based on literature concerning exposure to MPs and the toxicity of such exposure. Currently, four major routes of exposure have been identified including entanglement, contact, ingestion and inhalation. Humans maybe the most exposed organism because they are at the peak of the food chain. Toxicology effect to marine and freshwater organisms are classified based on exposure dosage as either high (mortality, decreased reproductive output, organ damage) or low (changes in behavior with time). On plants, reports have shown that MPs exposure can affect negatively the growth and depending on exposure concentration and types of MPs and oxidative activities. However, effects on plants maybe short-term and transient. Although, toxicity studies regarding human are still ongoing as per reports, plants and animals are still scantly studied. Animal toxicity studies have widely used D. magna as model specie. MPs pollution may have a knock-on effect on trophic structure and functioning of ecosystems by affecting the base of the food chain. We concluded by identifying the gap in knowledge and give recommendations for future research.

Abstract:Contamination of ecosystems by microplastics (MPs) has been reported intensively worldwide in the recent decade. A trend of reports indicated their presence in the atmosphere; food items and soil ecosystems are rising continuously. Literature evidenced that MPs are abundant in seawater, beach sand, drinking water, agricultural soils, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent, and the atmosphere. The greater abundance of MPs in the environment has led to their invasion of seafood, human-consumed food items such as table salts, beverages, takeout food containers, and disposable cups, marine biological lives, and creating serious health hazards in humans. Moreover, the absence of guidelines and specifications for controlling MPs in the environment makes the situation alarming, and the human toxicity data of MPs is scarce. Thereby, the toxicity assessment of MPs in humans is of greater concern. This review compiles the updated information on the potential sources of MPs in different components of the environment (viz soil, water, and air), their analysis methods, effects on human health, and remediation methods.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are a major concern worldwide due to their ecotoxicological effects on the environment and public health. The low density of MPs allows for their accumulation in the atmosphere, facilitating their global transportation and direct exposure to the human body by inhalation or ingestion, resulting in adverse health consequences. Therefore, it is critically essential to develop efficient and environmentally-friendly approaches for MP removal. To this end, this review aims to collate advances and new knowledge that emerged in recent years for MPs and their potentially damaging impacts on the ecosystem and human health. Some recent techniques and strategies for overcoming MP effects are also discussed. Furthermore, challenges and future perspectives to mitigate this planetary pollution are addressed. This assessment is intended for an audience that includes scientists in academia, plastic manufacturing firms interested in promoting the manufacture of bio-based plastics, and consumers who have the ability to choose alternative plastic options.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have become an important global environmental issue due to their widespread contamination in the environment. This review summarizes existing literature on the effects of MPs/NPs on three important biomarkers including enzymatic activity, gene expression, and histopathology in various organisms from 2016 to 2021 and suggests a path forward for future research. Application of enzymatic activity, gene expression, and histopathology biomarkers are increasingly used in experimental toxicology studies of MPs/NPs because of their early signs of environmental stress to organisms. Between 2016 to 2021, 70% of published studies focused on aquatic organisms, compared to terrestrial organisms. Zebrafish were widely used as a model organism to study adverse impacts of MPs/NPs. Polystyrene (PS) were the most important polymer used in experimental toxicology studies of MPs/NPs. Fewer studies focused on the histopathological alterations compared to studies on enzymatic activity and gene expression of different organisms exposed to MPs/NPs. There is a growing need to better understand toxic effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of MPs/NPs on enzymatic activity, gene expression, and histopathology biomarkers of both aquatic and terrestrial organisms.

Abstract:This review explains the sources of nanoplastics (NPs) and microplastics (MPs), their release, fate, and associated health risks in the aquatic environment. In the 21st century, scientists are grappling with a major challenge posed by MPs and NPs. The global production of plastic has skyrocketed from 1.5 million tons in the 1950s to an astonishing 390.7 million tons in 2021. This pervasive presence of these materials in our environment has spurred scientific inquiry into their potentially harmful effects on living organisms. Studies have revealed that while MPs, with their larger surface area, are capable of absorbing contaminants and pathogens from the surroundings, NPs can easily be transferred through the food chain. As a result, living organisms may ingest them and accumulate them within their bodies. Due to their minuscule size, NPs are particularly difficult to isolate and quantify. Furthermore, exposure to both NPs and MPs has been linked to various adverse health effects in aquatic species, including neurological impairments, disruption of lipid and energy metabolism, and increased susceptibility to cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. It is alarming to note that MPs have even been detected in commercial fish, highlighting the severity of this issue. There are also challenges associated with elucidating the toxicological effects of NPs and MPs, which are discussed in detail in this review. In conclusion, plastic pollution is a pressing issue that governments should tackle by ensuring proper implementation of rules and regulations at national and provincial levels to reduce its health risks.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are a class of pollutants that can persist for centuries, entering global ecosystems in large amounts. Previous studies have focused on the toxicological effects of MPs on single species or population scales from a narrow ecotoxicological perspective, while the systemic effects of MPs on the structure and function of global terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems are still unknown. In this review, we describe the fate and trophic transfer of MPs in ecosystems, which determines the possible scenarios of their interaction with ecosystems, highlighting the alteration of ecosystem structure and function by MPs. The presence of MPs in ecosystems changes the physicochemical properties of the abiotic environment and the habitat of organisms; these particles then directly or indirectly interact with organisms, leading to toxicological and ecological effects. Importantly, MPs, as a new global pressure, likely affect essential biogeochemical processes such as carbon and nitrogen processes. In addition, MPs affect energy flow by interfering with processes such as energy fixation and transfer in primary producers, energy acquisition, consumption and distribution in consumers, and energy metabolism in decomposers. The effects of MPs on information exchange alter the growth, development, and reproduction of organisms, as well as intraspecific and interspecific relationships. At the same time, as vectors for other global pollutants and pathogens, MPs influence their global transport patterns and pose a significant ecological risk. Early understanding of the toxic costs of MPs from the perspective of ecosystem structure and function is essential to maintain the homeostasis and stability of global ecosystems.

Abstract:The occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments has been a global concern because they are toxic and persistent and may serve as a vector for many legacies and emerging pollutants. MPs are discharged to aquatic environments from different sources, especially from wastewater plants (WWPs), causing severe impacts on aquatic organisms. This study mainly aims to review the Toxicity of MPs along with plastic additives in aquatic organisms at various trophic compartments and available remediation methods/strategies for MPs in aquatic environments. Occurrences of oxidative stress, neurotoxicity, and alterations in enzyme activity, growth, and feeding performance were identical in fish due to MPs toxicity. On the other hand, growth inhibition and ROS formation were observed in most of the microalgae species. In zooplankton, potential impacts were acceleration of premature molting, growth retardation, mortality increase, feeding behaviour, lipid accumulation, and decreased reproduction activity. MPs togather with additive contaminants could also exert some toxicological impacts on polychaete, including neurotoxicity, destabilization of the cytoskeleton, reduced feeding rate, growth, survivability and burrowing ability, weight loss, and high rate of mRNA transcription. Among different chemical and biological treatments for MPs, high removal rates have been reported for coagulation and filtration (>86.5 %), electrocoagulation (>90 %), advanced oxidation process (AOPs) (30 % to 95 %), primary sedimentation/Grit chamber (16.5 % to 58.84 %), adsorption removal technique (>95 %), magnetic filtration (78 % to 93 %), oil film extraction (>95 %), and density separation (95 % to 100 %). However, desirable extraction methods are required for large-scale research in MPs removal from aquatic environments.
Microplastics-biofilm in aquatic ecosystem: Formation, pollutants complexation, greenhouse gas emission and ecotoxicology

Abstract:The omnipresent microplastics (MPs) have gradually become a significant environmental problem due to its adverse consequences for ecological systems. MPs serve as substrates for biofilms colonization, which enhances adsorption of harmful contaminants on MPs surface in the aquatic ecosystem. The present study provides a critical discussion on the mechanism involved in MPs-biofilm formation, microbial colonization and the robust factors influencing the process in the aquatic ecosystem. Subsequently, the impact of MPs-biofilm on adsorption of inorganic and organic contaminants is explored. The ecological significance of MPs-biofilm associated pollutant complex for promoting greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions from aquatic ecosystem is extensively discussed for understanding the climatic risk. Furthermore, the discussion is extended over ecotoxicological impact of MPs-biofilm on aquatic biodiversity and humans. The protective extracellular polymeric substances secreted by colonised bacteria over MPs during biofilm formation creates sticky MPs surface for heteroaggregates formation with swift adsorption of chemical compounds and microorganisms. MPs with functional aromatic groups facilitate the bacterial adhesion on the surface, but affect formation of biofilm. Alternatively, MPs-biofilm promotes the Mn and Fe hydrous oxides formation that can co-precipitate with heavy metal ions and facilitate in remediation measures. However, MPs biodegradation generates GHGs emission per unit mass, comparably more from freshwater than marine ecosystem. Considering the toxicity, MPs-biofilm induces the oxidative response in fishes, causing painful death and thus, destroys aquatic biodiversity. This study will be useful to address MPs-biofilm associated pollution scenario via trace, test and treat strategy involving future engineering research framework for ecological restoration.

Abstract:Plastic pollution ranks among the most severe environmental disasters caused by humans, generating millions of tonnes of waste annually. The extensive and unregulated use of plastics has led to ecotoxicity and environmental imbalance. Microplastics (MPs) are prevalent in aquatic environments, and these MPs further degrade into even smaller particles known as nano-plastics (NPs). Both MPs and NPs impact the environment by readily absorbing organic pollutants and pathogens from their surroundings, owing to their bigger surface area to volume ratio. This review focuses on the source of origin, bioaccumulation, and potential impact of MPs and NPs on aquatic organisms and human health. Additionally, the review explores various methods employed for identification and quantification of these particles in aquatic ecosystems. Sufficient information is available on their characteristics, distributions, and effects on marine ecosystems compared with freshwater ecosystems. For plastic particles <10 μm, more toxicological effects were observed compared with larger size particles, in aquatic life. Understanding the mechanism of action and ecotoxicological effects of micro/nano-plastics on the health of aquatic life across various trophic levels, as well as human health, is of utmost importance. We address knowledge gaps and provide insights into future research approaches for a better understanding of the interactive mechanisms between binary pollutants.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have received an increasing attention because of their ubiquitous presence and aquatic toxicity associated with MPs and MP-bound contaminants in the natural water. This review is to critically examine the chemical additives leached from MPs, the altered contaminant behaviors and the resulting changes in their aquatic ecotoxicity. Available data suggest that heavy metals Zn, Cr, Pb, and Cd regulated and present in plastics at the sub-mg g-1 to mg g-1 level can leach a significant amount depending on MPs size, aging, pH, and salinity conditions. MP-bound organic contaminants are primarily additive-derived (e.g., brominated diphenyl ethers, nonylphenol, and bisphenol A) at the µg g-1 to mg g-1 level, and secondarily pyrogenic and legacy origins (e.g., PAHs and PCBs) in the range of ng g-1 and mg g-1. MPs tend to have higher but more variable sorption capacities for organic compounds than metals (1.77 ± 2.34 vs. 0.82 ± 0.94 mg g-1). MPs alter the behavior of heavy metals through the electrostatic interactions and surface complexation, while the transport of additive derived organic compounds are altered primarily through hydrophobic effect as supported by a positive correlation (R2 = 0.71) between the logarithmic MPs-adsorbed concentrations and octanol/water partition coefficients (KOW) of organic compounds. MPs constitute less than 0.01% of the total mass of aquatic particulates in typical waters, but play a discernible role in the local partitioning and long-distance movement of contaminants. MPs alone exert higher toxicity to invertebrates than algae; however, when MPs co-occur with pollutants, both synergistic and antagonistic toxicities are observed depending mainly on the ingestibility of MPs, the extent of sorption, MPs as a transport vector or a sink to scavenge pollutants. We finally suggest several key areas of future research directions and needed data concerning the role of MPs in mitigating pollutant leaching, transport and risk under conditions mimicking natural and polluted waters.

After being emitted into the terrestrial ecosystem, the MPs might be aged by oxidative degeneration (photo/thermal), reprecipitation (bioturbation), and hetero-accumulation. The mechanism of adsorption, degradation, and breakdown of MPs into unaffected plastic debris is accomplished by using several biological, physical, and chemical strategies. This review presents the importance of ecosystems, occurrence and sources of MPs, its toxicity, and the alteration in the ecology of the ecosystems. The inhibitory impact of MPs on the ecosystems also documents to unveil the ecological hazards of MPs. Further research is required to study the immobilization and recovery efficiency of MPs on a larger scale.

Abstract:AbstractMicroplastic (MP) pollution has aroused a tremendous amount of public and scientific interest worldwide. MPs are found widely ranging from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems primarily due to the over-exploitation of plastic products and unscientific disposal of plastic waste. There is a large availability of scientific literature on MP pollution in the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, especially the marine environments; however, only recently has greater scientific attention been focused on the presence of MPs in the air and its retrospective health implications. Besides, atmospheric transport has been reported to be an important pathway of transport of MPs to the pristine regions of the world. From a health perspective, existing studies suggest that airborne MPs are priority pollutant vectors, that may penetrate deep into the body through inhalation leading to adverse health impacts such as neurotoxicity, cancer, respiratory problems, cytotoxicity, and many more. However, their effects on indoor and outdoor air quality, and on human health are not yet clearly understood due to the lack of enough research studies on that and the non-availability of established scientific protocols for their characterization. This scientific review entails important information concerning the abundance of atmospheric MPs worldwide within the existing literature. A thorough comparison of existing sampling and analytical protocols has been presented. Besides, this review has unveiled the areas of scientific concern especially air quality monitoring which requires immediate attention, with the information gaps to be filled have been addressed.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are becoming ubiquitous, and their environmental fate is becoming an issue of concern. Our review aims to synthesize current knowledge status and provide future perspectives regarding the vector effect of MPs for chemical contaminants and biological agents. The evidence in the literature indicates that MPs are a vector for persistent organic pollutants (POPs), metals and pharmaceuticals. Concentrations of chemical contaminant in orders of six-fold higher on MPs surfaces than in the surrounding environmental waters have been reported. Chemical pollutants such as perfluoroalkyl substances (PAFSs), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCHs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), exhibiting polarities in the range of 3.3-9 are the commonest chemicals reported on MP surfaces. Regarding metals on MPs including chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), cobalt (Co), the presence of C-O and N-H in MPs promote a relatively high adsorption of these metals onto MP surfaces. Regarding pharmaceuticals, not much has been done, but a few studies indicate that commonly used drugs such as ibuprofen, ibuprofen, diclofenac, and naproxen have been associated with MPs. There is sufficient evidence supporting the claim that MPs can act as vectors for viruses, bacterial and antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes, and MPs act to accelerate horizontal and vertical gene transfer. An area that deserves urgent attention is whether MPs can act as vectors for invertebrates and vertebrates, mainly non-native, invasive freshwater species. Despite the ecological significance of invasive biology, little research has been done in this regard. Overall, our review summarises the state of the current knowledge, identifies critical research gaps and provides perspectives for future research.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are emerging persistent contaminants in the terrestrial subsurface, and evidence has emerged for significant effects of MPs on the biological and ecosystem functions of soils. Main MP sources include land spreading of sewage sludge and biowaste composts, plastic mulching film used in horticultural fields, waste water irrigation and leachate from the landfills, among others. This updated state-of-the-art review paper describes recent experimental and numerical research and developments in understanding the accumulation and fate and effects of MPs in the soil environment (focusing on their storage, degradation, transportation, leaching to groundwater etc.), followed by mitigation and bioremediation measures, including MP-eating soil bacteria and fungi and the best management practices for reducing MP pollution of soil. Other areas covered are the combined effects of MPs and various other environmental contaminants (heavy metals, organic pollutants and antibiotics) in soil ecosystems and the standardisation of methods for detection, quantification and characterisation of MPs in soils, which is critical for MP research. The paper concludes by identifying knowledge gaps and presents recommendations on prioritised research needs.

Abstract:Plastic is used by individuals within many different fields, including the automotive, packaging, cosmetics, textile and apparel, agricultural and fisheries sector and industries. Nevertheless, it has become a hazard to our ecosystem due to its extended degradation and decadences in nature, unceasing rise in manufacture and consumption with the increasing human population. Microplastics (MPs) can enter in both soil and aquatic environments through a variety of channels, including surface runoff, storm water runoff, river flow, and wastewater discharge. As a possible hazard to aquatic life, the existence and consumption of MPs has drawn significant attention from throughout the world. These tiny plastic particles absorb various substances and emit harmful additives, serving as sinks for dangerous substances and enhancing their bioavailability, toxicity, and movement. Additionally, the trophic transfer or bioaccumulation of MPs in a variety of aquatic creatures poses a significant concern. MPs have the potential to seriously harm aquatic life, including reduced eating efficiency, physical side effects, impaired gill function, oxidative stress, neurological damage, suppression of immunity and developmental disruption.

Abstract:The article focuses on the abundance of microplastics (MPs) in various environmental matrices, such as sediment and water, and their potential impacts. MPs can be considered as plastic particles that are less than 5 mm in dimension. The article presents an overview of the methods used for detecting and quantifying MPs in environmental samples, including spectroscopic techniques, microscopy, and chemical digestion. It also summarizes the current understanding of the distribution and abundance of MPs in various environmental compartments highlighting their importance in different environmental compartments. This article further discusses the potential impacts of MPs on different biota, such as marine organisms and terrestrial animals, and their ability to act as carriers for pollutants and other harmful substances. The review emphasizes the need for further research to better understand the impacts of MPs and to develop effective management strategies to mitigate their environmental effects.
