Abstract:Abstract Stroke leads to both regional brain functional disruptions and network reorganization. However, how brain functional networks reconfigure as task demand increases in stroke patients and whether such reorganization at baseline would facilitate post-stroke motor recovery are largely unknown. To address this gap, brain functional connectivity (FC) were examined at rest and motor tasks in eighteen chronic subcortical stroke patients and eleven age-matched healthy controls. Stroke patients underwent a 2-week intervention using a motor imagery-assisted brain computer interface-based (MI-BCI) training with or without transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Motor recovery was determined by calculating the changes of the upper extremity component of the Fugl–Meyer Assessment (FMA) score between pre- and post-intervention divided by the pre-intervention FMA score. The results suggested that as task demand increased (i.e., from resting to passive unaffected hand gripping and to active affected hand gripping), patients showed greater FC disruptions in cognitive networks including the default and dorsal attention networks. Compared to controls, patients had lower task-related spatial similarity in the somatomotor–subcortical, default–somatomotor, salience/ventral attention–subcortical and subcortical–subcortical connections, suggesting greater inefficiency in motor execution. Importantly, higher baseline network-specific FC strength (e.g., dorsal attention and somatomotor) and more efficient brain network reconfigurations (e.g., somatomotor and subcortical) from rest to active affected hand gripping at baseline were related to better future motor recovery. Our findings underscore the importance of studying functional network reorganization during task-free and task conditions for motor recovery prediction in stroke.

[Toxic shock syndrome].

Abstract:The toxic-shock syndrome (TSS) is a recently recognized syndrome characterized by sudden onset of high fever, vomiting, and diarrhea with rapid progression to hypotension and shock. It is caused by one or more not yet clearly defined exotoxins from staphylococcus aureus. The disease primarily affects young women using tampons during their menstrual periods, although it occurs also in non-menstruating women and in men. In these cases extragenital staphylococcus aureus infections are found. Since 1981 the toxic-shock syndrome associated with menstruation has occurred less frequently, whereas the non-menses-related toxic-shock syndrome appears with similar frequency. The syndrome resembles Kawasaki disease (mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome) in several aspects, namely fever, rash with subsequent desquamation, and cardiovascular involvement. However, shock, which is prominent in toxic-shock syndrome, is not usually seen in Kawasaki disease.

Abstract:Motor functions are supported through functional integration across the extended motor system network. Individuals following stroke often show deficits on motor performance requiring coordination of multiple brain networks; however, the assessment of connectivity patterns after stroke was still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the changes in intra- and inter-network functional connectivity (FC) of multiple networks following stroke and further correlate FC with motor performance. Thirty-three left subcortical chronic stroke patients and 34 healthy controls underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Eleven resting-state networks were identified via independent component analysis (ICA). Compared with healthy controls, the stroke group showed abnormal FC within the motor network (MN), visual network (VN), dorsal attention network (DAN), and executive control network (ECN). Additionally, the FC values of the ipsilesional inferior parietal lobule (IPL) within the ECN were negatively correlated with the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) scores (hand+wrist). With respect to inter-network interactions, the ipsilesional frontoparietal network (FPN) decreased FC with the MN and DAN; the contralesional FPN decreased FC with the ECN, but it increased FC with the default mode network (DMN); and the posterior DMN decreased FC with the VN. In sum, this study demonstrated the coexistence of intra- and inter-network alterations associated with motor-visual attention and high-order cognitive control function in chronic stroke, which might provide insights into brain network plasticity following stroke.
Dynamic Functional Reorganization of the Motor Execution Network after Stroke.

Abstract:Numerous studies argue that cortical reorganization may contribute to the restoration of motor function following stroke. However, the evolution of changes during the post-stroke reorganization has been little studied. This study sought to identify dynamic changes in the functional organization, particularly topological characteristics, of the motor execution network during the stroke recovery process. Ten patients (nine male and one female) with subcortical infarctions were assessed by neurological examination and scanned with resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging across five consecutive time points in a single year. The motor execution network of each subject was constructed using a functional connectivity matrix between 21 brain regions and subsequently analysed using graph theoretical approaches. Dynamic changes in topological configuration of the network during the process of recovery were evaluated by a mixed model. We found that the motor execution network gradually shifted towards a random mode during the recovery process, which suggests that a less optimized reorganization is involved in regaining function in the affected limbs. Significantly increased regional centralities within the network were observed in the ipsilesional primary motor area and contralesional cerebellum, whereas the ipsilesional cerebellum showed decreased regional centrality. Functional connectivity to these brain regions demonstrated consistent alterations over time. Notably, these measures correlated with different clinical variables, which provided support that the findings may reflect the adaptive reorganization of the motor execution network in stroke patients. In conclusion, the study expands our understanding of the spectrum of changes occurring in the brain after stroke and provides a new avenue for investigating lesion-induced network plasticity.

Abstract:The brain continually reorganizes its functional network to adapt to post-stroke functional impairments. Previous studies using static modularity analysis have presented global-level behavior patterns of this network reorganization. However, it is far from understood how the brain reconfigures its functional network dynamically following a stroke. This study collected resting-state functional MRI data from 15 stroke patients, with mild (n = 6) and severe (n = 9) two subgroups based on their clinical symptoms. Additionally, 15 age-matched healthy subjects were considered as controls. By applying a multilayer temporal network method, a dynamic modular structure was recognized based on a time-resolved function network. The dynamic network measurements (recruitment, integration, and flexibility) were calculated to characterize the dynamic reconfiguration of post-stroke brain functional networks, hence, revealing the neural functional rebuilding process. It was found from this investigation that severe patients tended to have reduced recruitment and increased between-network integration, while mild patients exhibited low network flexibility and less network integration. It's also noted that previous studies using static methods could not reveal this severity-dependent alteration in network interaction. Clinically, the obtained knowledge of the diverse patterns of dynamic adjustment in brain functional networks observed from the brain neuronal images could help understand the underlying mechanism of the motor, speech, and cognitive functional impairments caused by stroke attacks. The present method not only could be used to evaluate patients' current brain status but also has the potential to provide insights into prognosis analysis and prediction.

Abstract:Background: Electroencephalogram (EEG) based brain-machine interaction training can facilitate rehabilitation by closing the sensorimotor loop. However, it remains unclear how to evaluate whether the loop is closed, especially for stroke patients whose brain regions of motor control and sensorimotor feedback could be altered. Our hypothesis is that motor recovery depends on whether sensorimotor loop is established poststroke. This study aims to explore how to evaluate the establishment of sensorimotor loop based on the evolving neural reorganization patterns after stroke. New Method: 14 stroke patients participated in the experiment and EEG were recorded during three specific tasks: Movement Imagery (MI), Passive Movement (PM) and Movement Execution (ME). Activated brain regions correlated with movement intention expression and sensorimotor feedback were detected respectively during MI and PM. In ME, local-averaged Phase Lag Index (PLI) was analyzed to represent the functional connectivity between activated brain regions of MI and PM.Results: Individualized cortical activation was found both in MI and PM. The overlapping brain activation during PM and MI did not correlate with patient's Fugl-Meyer Upper Extremity Motor Score (FMU) . However, we found that FMU of the group with higher local-averaged PLI was statistically higher than FMU of the group with lower local-averaged PLI compared with global-averaged PLI (p < 0.05).Conclusions: The findings demonstrate functional connectivity between activated brain regions of motor control and sensorimotor feedback may imply if the individualized sensorimotor loop is established poststroke. The successful formation of the closed loop can indicate stroke patients' motor recovery.

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the changes in connectivity between motor imagery (MI) and motor execution (ME) in the premotor area (PMA) and primary motor cortex (MA) of the brain, aiming to explore suitable forms of treatment and potential therapeutic targets. Methods: Twenty-three inpatients with stroke were selected, and 21 right-handed healthy individuals were recruited. EEG signal during hand MI and ME (synergy and isolated movements) was recorded. Correlations between functional brain areas during MI and ME were compared. Results: PMA and MA were significantly and positively correlated during hand MI in all participants. The power spectral density (PSD) values of PMA EEG signals were greater than those of MA during MI and ME in both groups. The functional connectivity correlation was higher in the stroke group than in healthy people during MI, especially during left-handed MI. During ME, functional connectivity correlation in the brain was more enhanced during synergy movements than during isolated movements. The regions with abnormal functional connectivity were in the 18th lead of the left PMA area. Conclusion: Left-handed MI may be crucial in MI therapy, and the 18th lead may serve as a target for non-invasive neuromodulation to promote further recovery of limb function in patients with stroke. This may provide support for the EEG theory of neuromodulation therapy for hemiplegic patients.

Brain Network Characteristics Between Subacute and Chronic Stroke Survivors in Active, Imagery, Passive Movement Task: a Pilot Study

Abstract:BackgroundThe activation patterns and functional network characteristics between stroke survivors and healthy individuals based on resting-or task-state neuroimaging and neurophysiological techniques have been extensively explored. However, the discrepancy between stroke patients at different recovery stages remains unclear.ObjectiveTo investigate the changes in brain connectivity and network topology between subacute and chronic patients, and hope to provide a basis for rehabilitation strategies at different stages after stroke.MethodsFifteen stroke survivors were assigned to the subacute group (SG, N = 9) and chronic group (CG, N = 6). They were asked to perform hand grasping under active, passive, and MI conditions when recording EEG. The Fugl-Meyer Assessment Upper Extremity subscale (FMA_UE), modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), Manual Muscle Test (MMT), grip and pinch strength, modified Barthel Index (MBI), and Berg Balance Scale (BBS) were measured.ResultsFunctional connectivity analyses showed significant interactions on frontal, parietal and occipital lobes connections in each frequency band, particularly in the delta band. The coupling strength of premotor cortex, M1, S1 and several connections linked to frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes in subacute subjects were lower than in chronic subjects in low alpha, high alpha, low beta, and high beta bands. Nodal clustering coefficient (CC) analyses revealed that the CC in chronic subjects was higher than in subacute subjects in the ipsilesional S1 and occipital area, contralesional dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and parietal area. Characteristic path length (CPL) analyses showed that CPL in subacute subjects was lower than in chronic subjects in low beta, high beta, and gamma bands. There were no significant differences between subacute and chronic subjects for small-world property.ConclusionSubacute stroke survivors were characterized by higher transfer efficiency of the entire brain network and weak local nodal effects. Transfer efficiency was reduced, the local nodal role was strengthened, and more neural resources needed to be mobilized to perform motor tasks for chronic survivors. Overall, these results may help to understand the remodeling pattern of the brain network for different post-stroke stages on task conditions and the mechanism of spontaneous recovery.

Abstract:The brain, as a complex dynamically distributed information processing system, involves the coordination of large-scale brain networks such as neural synchronization and fast brain state transitions, even at rest. However, the neural mechanisms underlying brain states and the impact of dysfunction following brain injury on brain dynamics remain poorly understood. To this end, we proposed a microstate-based method to explore the functional connectivity pattern associated with each microstate class. We capitalized on microstate features from eyes-closed resting-state EEG data to investigate whether microstate dynamics differ between subacute stroke patients ( N = 31) and healthy populations ( N = 23) and further examined the correlations between microstate features and behaviors. An important finding in this study was that each microstate class was associated with a distinct functional connectivity pattern, and it was highly consistent across different groups (including an independent dataset). Although the connectivity patterns were diminished in stroke patients, the skeleton of the patterns was retained to some extent. Nevertheless, stroke patients showed significant differences in most parameters of microstates A, B, and C compared to healthy controls. Notably, microstate C exhibited an opposite pattern of differences to microstates A and B. On the other hand, there were no significant differences in all microstate parameters for patients with left-sided vs. right-sided stroke, as well as patients before vs. after lower limb training. Moreover, support vector machine (SVM) models were developed using only microstate features and achieved moderate discrimination between patients and controls. Furthermore, significant negative correlations were observed between the microstate-wise functional connectivity and lower limb motor scores. Overall, these results suggest that the changes in microstate dynamics for stroke patients appear to be state-selective, compensatory, and related to brain dysfunction after stroke and subsequent functional reconfiguration. These findings offer new insights into understanding the neural mechanisms of microstates, uncovering stroke-related alterations in brain dynamics, and exploring new treatments for stroke patients.

Identifying biomarkers related to motor function in chronic stroke: A fNIRS and TMS study

Abstract:Background: Upper limb motor impairment commonly occurs after stroke, impairing quality of life. Brain network reorganization likely differs between subgroups with differing impairment severity. This study explored differences in functional connectivity (FC) and corticospinal tract (CST) integrity between patients with mild/moderate versus severe hemiplegia poststroke to clarify the neural correlates underlying motor deficits. Method: Sixty chronic stroke patients with upper limb motor impairment were categorized into mild/moderate and severe groups based on Fugl-Meyer scores. Resting-state FC was assessed using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to compare connectivity patterns between groups across motor regions. CST integrity was evaluated by inducing motor evoked potentials (MEP) via transcranial magnetic stimulation. Results: Compared to the mild/moderate group, the severe group exhibited heightened premotor cortex-primary motor cortex (PMC-M1) connectivity (t = 4.56, p < 0.01). Absence of MEP was also more frequent in the severe group (χ2 = 12.31, p = 0.01). Bayesian models effectively distinguished subgroups and identified the PMC-M1 connection as highly contributory (accuracy = 91.30%, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUC] = 0.86). Conclusion: Distinct patterns of connectivity and corticospinal integrity exist between stroke subgroups with differing impairments. Strengthened connectivity potentially indicates recruitment of additional motor resources to compensate for damage. These findings elucidate the neural correlates underlying motor deficits poststroke and could guide personalized, network-based therapies targeting predictive biomarkers to improve rehabilitation outcomes.
Corticomuscular Coupling Analysis in Stroke Rehabilitation Based on Variational Mode Decomposition-Transfer Entropy

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to explore alterations in corticomuscular and cortical coupling during the rehabilitation of stroke patients. Methods: We initiated the analysis by employing variational modal decomposition (VMD) on electromyography (EMG) data, followed by the application of VDM-transfer entropy (VMD-TE) to quantify the coupling strength between electroencephalogram (EEG) and EMG signals. Subsequently, we constructed the VMD-TE connection matrix and analyzed the clustering coefficient and small-world attributes within the cortico-muscular functional network (CMFN). Finally, a random forest algorithm was employed to extract features from the VMD-TE connection matrix across different rehabilitation periods. Results: Beta waves in EEG were emerged as the key information carrier between the cortex and muscle, and the CMFN of patients with the beta frequency band has small-world characteristics. During rehabilitation, we observed a decrease in coupling between the initially affected motor cortex and muscle, accompanied by an increase in coupling between the frontal region and muscle. Conclusion: Our findings suggest potential neuro-remodeling in stroke patients after rehabilitation, with CFMN serving as a valuable metric for assessing cortico-muscular coupling.
Ability of an altered functional coupling between resting-state networks to predict behavioral outcomes in subcortical ischemic stroke: A longitudinal study

Abstract:Stroke can be viewed as an acute disruption of an individual's connectome caused by a focal or widespread loss of blood flow. Although individuals exhibit connectivity changes in multiple functional networks after stroke, the neural mechanisms that underlie the longitudinal reorganization of the connectivity patterns are still unclear. The study aimed to determine whether brain network connectivity patterns after stroke can predict longitudinal behavioral outcomes. Nineteen patients with stroke with subcortical lesions underwent two sessions of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning at a 1-month interval. By independent component analysis, the functional connectivity within and between multiple brain networks (including the default mode network, the dorsal attention network, the limbic network, the visual network, and the frontoparietal network) was disrupted after stroke and partial recovery at the second time point. Additionally, regression analyses revealed that the connectivity between the limbic and dorsal attention networks at the first time point showed sufficient reliability in predicting the clinical scores (Fugl-Meyer Assessment and Neurological Deficit Scores) at the second time point. The overall findings suggest that functional coupling between the dorsal attention and limbic networks after stroke can be regarded as a biomarker to predict longitudinal clinical outcomes in motor function and the degree of neurological functional deficit. Overall, the present study provided a novel opportunity to improve prognostic ability after subcortical strokes.
Decreased Functional Connectivity of Homotopic Brain Regions in Chronic Stroke Patients: A Resting State Fmri Study

Abstract:The recovery of motor functions is accompanied by brain reorganization, and identifying the inter-hemispheric interaction post stroke will conduce to more targeted treatments. However, the alterations of bi-hemispheric coordination pattern between homologous areas in the whole brain for chronic stroke patients were still unclear. The present study focuses on the functional connectivity (FC) of mirror regions of the whole brain to investigate the inter-hemispheric interaction using a new fMRI method named voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC). Thirty left subcortical chronic stroke patients with pure motor deficits and 37 well-matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state fMRI scans. We employed a VMHC analysis to determine the brain areas showed significant differences between groups in FC between homologous regions, and we explored the relationships between the mean VMHC of each survived area and clinical tests within patient group using Pearson correlation. In addition, the brain areas showed significant correlations between the mean VMHC and clinical tests were defined as the seed regions for whole brain FC analysis. Relative to HCs, patients group displayed lower VMHC in the precentral gyrus, postcentral gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, calcarine gyrus, thalamus, cerebellum anterior lobe, and cerebellum posterior lobe (CPL). Moreover, the VMHC of CPL was positively correlated with the Fugl-Meyer Score of hand (FMA-H), while a negative correlation between illness duration and the VMHC of this region was also detected. Furthermore, we found that when compared with HCs, the right CPL exhibited reduced FC with the left precentral gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, inferior parietal lobule, middle temporal gyrus, thalamus and hippocampus. Our results suggest that the functional coordination across hemispheres is impaired in chronic stroke patients, and increased VMHC of the CPL is significantly associated with higher FMA-H scores. These findings may be helpful in understanding the mechanism of hand deficit after stroke, and the CPL may serve as a target region for hand rehabilitation following stroke.

Abstract:Recent fMRI studies have demonstrated that resting-state functional connectivity (FC) is of nonstationarity. Temporal variability of FC reflects the dynamic nature of brain activity. Exploring temporal variability of FC offers a new approach to investigate reorganization and integration of brain networks after stroke. Here, we examined longitudinal alterations of FC temporal variability in brain networks after stroke. Nineteen stroke patients underwent resting fMRI scans across the acute stage (within-one-week after stroke), subacute stage (within-two-weeks after stroke), and early chronic stage (3-4 months after stroke). Nineteen age- and sex-matched healthy individuals were enrolled. Compared with the controls, stroke patients exhibited reduced regional temporal variability during the acute stages, which was recovered at the following two stages. Compared with the acute stage, the subacute stage exhibited increased temporal variability in the primary motor, auditory, and visual cortices. Across the three stages, the temporal variability in the ipsilesional precentral gyrus (PreCG) was increased first and then reduced. Increased temporal variability in the ipsilesional PreCG from the acute stage to the subacute stage was correlated with motor recovery from the acute stage to the early chronic stage. Our results demonstrated that temporal variability of brain network might be a potential tool for evaluating and predicting motor recovery after stroke.

Abstract:Stroke caused by cerebral infarction or hemorrhage can lead to motor dysfunction. The recovery of motor function is vital for patients with stroke in daily activities. Traditional rehabilitation of stroke generally depends on physical practice under passive affected limbs movement. Motor imagery-based brain computer interface (MI-BCI) combined with functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a potential active neural rehabilitation technology for patients with stroke recently, which complements traditional passive rehabilitation methods. As the predecessor of BCI technology, neurofeedback training (NFT) is a psychological process that feeds back neural activities online to users for self-regulation. In this work, BCI-based NFT were proposed to promote the active repair and reconstruction of the whole nerve conduction pathway and motor function. We designed and implemented a multimodal, training type motor NFT system (BCI-NFT-FES) by integrating the visual, auditory, and tactile multisensory pathway feedback mode and using the joint detection of electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The results indicated that after 4 weeks of training, the clinical scale score, event-related desynchronization (ERD) of EEG patterns, and cerebral oxygen response of patients with stroke were enhanced obviously. This study preliminarily verified the clinical effectiveness of the long-term NFT system and the prospect of motor function rehabilitation.

Abstract:Traditional rehabilitation strategies become difficult in the chronic phase stage of stroke prognosis. Brain-computer interface (BCI) combined with external devices may improve motor function in chronic stroke patients, but it lacks comprehensive assessments of neurological changes regarding functional rehabilitation. This study aimed to comprehensively and quantitatively investigate the changes in brain activity induced by BCI-FES training in patients with chronic stroke. We analyzed the EEG of two groups of patients with chronic stroke, one group received functional electrical stimulation (FES) rehabilitation training (FES group) and the other group received BCI combined with FES training (BCI-FES group). We constructed functional networks in both groups of patients based on direct directed transfer function (dDTF) and assessed the changes in brain activity using graph theory analysis. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: (i) after rehabilitation training, the Fugl-Meyer assessment scale (FMA) score was significantly improved in the BCI-FES group (p < 0.05), and there was no significant difference in the FES group. (ii) Both the global and local graph theory measures of the brain network of patients with chronic stroke in the BCI-FES group were improved after rehabilitation training. (iii) The node strength in the contralesional hemisphere and central region of patients in the BCI-FES group was significantly higher than that in the FES group after the intervention (p < 0.05), and a significant increase in the node strength of C4 in the contralesional sensorimotor cortex region could be observed in the BCI-FES group (p < 0.05). These results suggest that BCI-FES rehabilitation training can induce clinically significant improvements in motor function of patients with chronic stroke. It can improve the functional integration and functional separation of brain networks and boost compensatory activity in the contralesional hemisphere to a certain extent. The findings of our study may provide new insights into understanding the plastic changes of brain activity in patients with chronic stroke induced by BCI-FES rehabilitation training.

Abstract:Effective description of the brain function after stroke is the key to accurate rehabilitation assessment, and it is of great significance to explore the nonlinear complexity characteristics of the brain from the perspective of complex networks. In this study, we investigated the brain functional connectivity alterations after stroke by constructing a multilayer network model. Firstly, we obtained multichannel EEG signals in different frequency bands (θ, α, β and γ) during the multi-joint compound movement. Furthermore, we introduced the weighted phase lag index (wPLI) and KL-modulation index (MI) to construct the within-frequency subnetworks (WFN) and cross-frequency subnetworks (CFN), respectively. Then multilayer network was constructed by the aforementioned subnetworks. Calculating multilayer participation coefficient (MPC) and multiplex clustering coefficient (MCC) to explore differences in connection strength within subnetworks. The algebraic connectivity was used to compare the differences in multilayer network topology from global perspective. β frequency band WFN showed significantly stronger connectivity in healthy group compared with stroke patients. Conversely, the θ-γ CFN in patients exhibited significantly higher connectivity strength compared with controls, while the opposite was true for α-β CFN. There were significant differences in network nodes between the left and right brain regions in controls, whereas the distribution of MPC in both hemispheres was evenly distributed in the patients. Global metrics indicated that the algebraic connectivity of the patients’ brain network was significantly lower than that of the controls. These findings have important implications for understanding the brain functional connectivity in stroke and developing effective rehabilitation and therapeutic strategies.

Abstract:Abstract Objective . Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based motor imagery (MI) brain-computer interface offers a promising way to improve the efficiency of motor rehabilitation and motor skill learning. In recent years, the power of dynamic network analysis for MI classification has been proved. In fact, its usability mainly depends on the accurate estimation of brain connection. However, traditional dynamic network estimation strategies such as adaptive directed transfer function (ADTF) are designed in the L2-norm. Usually, they estimate a series of pseudo connections caused by outliers, which results in biased features and further limits its online application. Thus, how to accurately infer dynamic causal relationship under outlier influence is urgent. Approach . In this work, we proposed a novel ADTF, which solves the dynamic system in the L1-norm space (L1-ADTF), so as to restrict the outlier influence. To enhance its convergence, we designed an iteration strategy with the alternating direction method of multipliers, which could be used for the solution of the dynamic state-space model restricted in the L1-norm space. Furthermore, we compared L1-ADTF to traditional ADTF and its dual extension across both simulation and real EEG experiments. Main results . A quantitative comparison between L1-ADTF and other ADTFs in simulation studies demonstrates that fewer bias errors and more desirable dynamic state transformation patterns can be captured by the L1-ADTF. Application to real MI EEG datasets seriously noised by ocular artifacts also reveals the efficiency of the proposed L1-ADTF approach to extract the time-varying brain neural network patterns, even when more complex noises are involved. Significance . The L1-ADTF may not only be capable of tracking time-varying brain network state drifts robustly but may also be useful in solving a wide range of dynamic systems such as trajectory tracking problems and dynamic neural networks.

Abstract:Motor imagery (MI) requires subjects to visualize the requested motor behaviors, which involves a large-scale network that spans multiple brain areas. The corresponding cortical activity reflected on the scalp is characterized by event-related desynchronization (ERD) and then by event-related synchronization (ERS). However, the network mechanisms that account for the dynamic information processing of MI during the ERD and ERS periods remain unknown. Here, we combined ERD/ERS analysis with the dynamic networks in different MI stages (i.e. motor preparation, ERD and ERS) to probe the dynamic processing of MI information. Our results show that specific dynamic network structures correspond to the ERD/ERS evolution patterns. Specifically, ERD mainly shows the contralateral networks, while ERS has the symmetric networks. Moreover, different dynamic network patterns are also revealed between the two types of MIs, in which the left-hand MIs exhibit a relatively less sustained contralateral network, which may be the network mechanism that accounts for the bilateral ERD/ERS observed for the left-hand MIs. Similar to the network topologies, the three MI stages also appear to be characterized by different network properties. The above findings all demonstrate that different MI stages that involve specific brain networks for dynamically processing the MI information.
