Abstract:Abstract In this paper, a new method is developed to investigate the anti-penetration performance of the steel/nylon sandwich plate, which incorporates experimental method with numerical simulation. Constitutive parameters of the steel/nylon sandwich plate are measured by the Hopkinson Pressure Bar, and LS-DYNA is applied to simulate the penetration process of projectiles into the sandwich plate. The dynamic response, failure modes and energy absorption coefficients are obtained, and the penetration tests are conducted to verify the numerical method. Results show: results obtained by experimental and numerical methods have very high agreement, which demonstrates that the method proposed can be applicable for predicting the anti-penetration performance of the sandwich plate.

Abstract:To predict the anti-penetration performance of protective structures, the ballistic performance of sandwich plates with steel face-sheet and aluminum foam core, the quasi-static compressive experiments of four different aluminum foam are performed and analyzed. The failure mechanism, mechanical parameters, and modified constitutive model are obtained. The virtual tests using numerical simulation were carried out in different penetration velocities based on quasi-static experimental constitutive parameters. Influence of projectile shape, face-sheet thickness, core thickness, and core densities on the residual velocity and plastic deformation of sandwich plates are discussed, while typical penetration failure modes and deformation mechanism are presented and analyzed. The failure modes of sandwich plates are different for hemisphere- and blunted-nosed projectile and the projectile shape influence is significant for ballistic performance when the penetration velocity approaches ballistic limit. The ballistic limit increases with increase of face-sheet or core thickness, core density and which shows an approximate linear relationship.

Abstract:Purpose Metal plates are usually used as protective shields of engineering structures, which probably undergo multiple projectile impacts resulting from gunshot and blast. Though a large number of studies have been conducted on the performance of metal plates under a single projectile impact, few studies have explored their performance under multiple projectile impacts. This paper aims to explore the performance of Weldox 460 E steel plates against multiple projectile impacts through numerical simulation. Design/methodology/approach A three-dimensional coupled finite element (FE) and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) model was developed to simulate the perforation of a 12-mm-thick Weldox 460 E steel plate by an ogival projectile. The model was verified by existing experimental data. Then, it was extended to investigate the same target plate subjected to impacts with multiple projectiles. Simultaneous impacts with different number of projectiles, as well as sequential impacts with two projectiles, were considered. Findings Effects of spacing between projectiles on residual velocity of projectile, ballistic limit and failure mode of target were revealed for simultaneous impacts. Effects of spacing and axial distance between projectiles on residual velocity of projectile were explored for sequential impacts. Originality/value This work developed an advanced FE–SPH model to simulate perforation of steel plates by multiple projectiles, and revealed the effects of multiple impacts on ballistic performance of steel plates. It provides guidance for the design of protective structures/shields in various engineering applications.
Experimental and Numerical Investigation on Ballistic Penetration Performance of TC4-Al3Ti Layered Composites by Hot Rolling

Abstract:Laminated composites with a nacreous shell structure can be designed with a high strength but light weight, ideal for protective shields. This work prepared TC4-Al3Ti laminated composite plates by stacking TC4 plates and Al plates with a thickness of 0.5 mm through vacuum multi-pass hot rolling and heat treatment. Their damage morphology and mechanisms, energy absorption capacity, and internal stress distribution were examined through ballistic test and numerical simulations. It is found that the ballistic limit velocity of the TC4-Al3Ti laminated composite is about 486 m/s. After penetration, only craters are formed in the sample without the presentation of fragments, exhibiting excellent performance against multiple projectiles. The failure of TC4-Al3Ti laminated composites is dominated by the petal-like damage, i.e., interlayer cracking. Meanwhile, the TC4 layer absorbs energy through plastic deformation, while the Al3Ti layer breaks and produces cracks. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of the damage behavior of the TC4-Al3Ti laminated composite under impact, which could benefit their engineering applications.
Numerical Simulation on Shaped Charge Jet Penetrating Single / Composite Structure of Target Plate

Abstract:Abstract In order to study the ability of the target plate in the fortification to resist the penetration of the front-stage shaped jet of the tandem warhead, four common target materials of ceramic, reinforced concrete, steel fiber reinforced concrete and high-strength steel were selected as the target plate, and the finite difference software LS-DYNA was used. Software to carry out numerical simulation research on metal jet penetration into single/composite target plate. The research results show that when the structure of the shaped charge is the same, the jet penetration resistance of the four target materials is high-strength steel, ceramics, steel fiber reinforced concrete, and reinforced concrete in descending order; the C40 national military standard reinforced concrete target is used as a reference. The jet penetration depth of the composite target is reduced by 28%; due to the consumption of jet energy by multiple pit opening and high-strength interlayer materials, the jet penetration resistance of the composite target with the same thickness is better than that of a single.

Abstract:The whole process of formation, flying and penetration of explosively-formed projectile (EFP) is simulated by a 3D coupled hydrocode of Ls_dyna. The caliber of the shaped charge is 60mm and EFP is a kind of overturned shaped charge. The Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) method is adopted to consider the fluid–solid coupling problem. The velocity attenuation equation is fitted to forecast the flight distance of EFP. The penetration property of EFP to the armor plate is studied by similarity theory and numerical simulation. For validating the equation, a test is designed to study the residual velocity after penetrating a 25mm thick steel plate from a distance of 48m. Therefore, some important solutions are obtained from the comparison of the simulation and experiment. The solutions are optimized charge structure of EFP, the ideal shape of projectile, the attenuation rule of flight process and the penetration property after 48m flight. The numerical solution fits the experimental data well and the study results provide important reference to the design of EFP in engineering.

Abstract:Based on the idea of using the former jet destroying shelled explosive,which is penetrated but not detonated,and clearing away barrier for latter jet penetrating master armor,a kind of low density material was adopted to shaped charge.The finite element AUTODYN-2D program was applied to complete the numerical simulation,and obtained the peak pressure and degree of reaction curve when the former jet penetrated different structure size of shelled explosive.The result showed that the studied shelled explosive could be penetrated but not detonated,when the panel and backplane thickness was less than 2mm,and the mezzanine explosives thickness was less than 3.5mm.The pressure threshold of mezzanine explosives is 7.09GPa when it was penetrated but not detonated,and the other is 8.02GPa when it was detonated.The cumulative effect of time and degree of compression will influence the detonation of mezzanine explosive.

Abstract:In the military field, determining how to increase the hole-expanding ability of shaped charge warheads is a key and difficult issue with respect to warhead development. Amorphous alloys have grains or grain boundaries, with unique mechanical properties. Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 can be used as the liner material of shaped charges, resulting in high-speed particle flows that differ from those of traditionally shaped charges. In this paper, based on the analysis of the mechanical response characteristics of Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 and its fracture morphology under impact, combined with the formation theory of shaped charge jets, a semi-empirical formula is derived to calculate the velocity of non-cohesive high-speed particle flow considering the elastic strain energy loss. Additionally, the reliability of the proposed theoretical model is verified through experiments. The penetration process of Zr-based amorphous alloy high-speed particle flow into a concrete target is theoretically analyzed, and the penetration stages of the high-speed particle flow into the target are clearly distinguished. Combined with the penetration theory of shaped charge particle jets, a high-speed particle flow penetration model is proposed, and a pore expansion model is established through an energy method. The experimentally obtained data on depth of penetration are in agreement with the theoretical calculation results.

Abstract:Experiments on penetrating into concrete and pebble layered targets were performed by shaped charge with different cone angles, liner wall thicknesses, length to diameter ratios and charge diameters at different standoffs. Based on the experimental data, the influence of shaped charge’s structural parameters on crater diameter, hole diameter, crater depth and penetration depth was analyzed in detail. Meanwhile, formation and penetration processes of all shaped charges were simulated by AUTODYN software for investigating the more intrinsic mechanisms, in which the numerical models are the same as those set up in the experiments. The results obtained in this paper indicate that there are obvious differences between jetting projectile charge (JPC) and explosively formed projectile (EFP) in penetrating into multi-layer targets. For the same charge diameter, the values of hole diameter formed by EFP were much larger than JPC. However, for the same standoff, the penetration depth caused by JCP were larger than EFP. The interfacial effect exists in the penetration progress of JPC.

Abstract:Shaped charges are widely employed in both military and civilian applications owing to their strong penetration capacities, such as weapon production, oil exploitation, mining, and tunneling. To augment the armor-breaking capability of a shaped charge, it is of utmost significance to enhance the velocity of the metal jet. Therefore, the hypervelocity shaped charge (HSC) has been proposed as a potential solution. Compared with ordinary shaped charges, HSCs can cause severer damage to the target owing to the faster velocity of its jet head. The Eulerian Finite Element Method (EFEM) is developed to build the axisymmetric numerical model, and it can simulate shockwave propagation, jet penetration, and target destruction. The model is validated by the experiments, and the convergence analysis is also performed. And the fundamental characteristics of HSC in underwater explosions including the metal jet and shockwave are investigated. Subsequently, the HSCs with the different liner truncation heights H L and liner materials are simulated to obtain the optimal parameter (range) for penetration capacity. Analyzing the numerical results, when 8mm≤HL≤13mm or the liner is made of aluminum, the metal jet generated by HSC will have a greater penetration capacity to the steel plate through the comparison of the crevasse diameter and residual velocity.

The Influence of Closed-Cell W-Shaped Liner Parameters on the Penetration Performance of Integral Annular Shaped Charge

Abstract:To further enhance the hole-opening ability of the metal jet formed by the annular shaped charge on the armored steel target, a new annular shaped charge structure of a closed-cell W-shaped charge liner is designed based on a certain penetration depth. The impact of the length-diameter ratio of the charge, the inverted cone angle, and the cone angle of the liner on the opening diameter of the annular metal jet are studied through the orthogonal optimization of the annular shaped charge structures carried out by numerical simulation, which shows that the inverted cone angle and the cone angle of the liner are among the main factors that affect penetration depth and the opening diameter of the annular jet, respectively. According to this, an optimum annular charge structure considering both penetration depth and opening diameter is designed and tested by experiments. According to the results, the optimized annular jet records an opening diameter of 0.83 CD (Charge Diameter) when it penetrates the armored steel target with a thickness of 0.53 CD. The experimental results are consistent with the numerical simulation. The research results have certain practical engineering significance for guiding the design of the front-stage annular shaped charge structure of the multi-effect destructive warhead.

Abstract:Numerical simulation of the shaped charge jet formation process and penetration through the wall of perforating gun are made by use of the explicit dynamic finite element analysis program.And the results of numerical simulation are discussed.The distribution character of the parameter,which is called height of burst,is analysed.The results of numerical simulation are agreement with physical phenomena and laws of jet formation and penetration.The study indicates that the calculation model and simulation method are reasonable and feasible,so can be applied to the optimizing design for shaped charge jet,which may be used for reference to manufacture and scientific research of perforating bullet.

Abstract:Using the finite element LS-DYNA analysis software,and by the mode of reverse initiation,a low ratio length to diameter shaped charge warhead was studied.Penetrator power and shaping was specifically analyzed under five different charge height.Studies show that it is feasible to reduce unnecessary charge,0.4 small ratio length to diameter shaped charge warhead can be obtained.In order to improve penetrator power,the liner wall thickness was also analyzed.Analysis shows that the thinner the liner wall,the higher velocity the penetrator.

Abstract:Due to the insensitive charge inside the underwater target and the thin-walled flying target in the air, it is difficult for the traditional insensitive penetrator to detonate the low vulnerability charge. The multi-effect penetrator is an effective way to detonate the low vulnerability shielding charge. In order to analyze the damage characteristics of the new energetic penetrator containing Al/PTFE energetic powder penetrating the thin-walled shielding charge shell to the internal low vulnerability injection charge, the material with mechanical properties similar to the injection charge was selected to replace the internal low vulnerability charge, and conduct research on the simulated shielding charge target composed of a new type of energetic penetrator 2A12 shell filled with PMMA. The results indicate that when the internal stress of the simulated charge reaches the maximum tensile strength of 50 MPa, the material fails and fractures, accompanied by radial cracks inside. When the penetration speed of the penetrator is between 100 and 250 m/s, it can be embedded in the aluminum plate. When the penetration speed is greater than 250 m/s, the penetrator can penetrate the aluminum plate. The total time required for the energy generated by piezoelectric ceramics to reach the ignition point is approximately 0.41–2.8 μs. The time from the moment when the counterweight hits the piezoelectric ceramic to the ignition time of the ignition head is 4–7 μs. The delay time for electric ignition head to ignite energetic powder is 365 μs. When the charge of energetic powder reaches 3 g, the overpressure at the nozzle of the energetic penetrating body can reach 1.914 GPa, the overpressure generated by the spray flame on the simulated charge can reach 1.136 GPa, the overpressure generated by the spray flame on the simulated charge can reach 1.136 GPa, and the temperature rise generated by the spray flame can reach 5560 K.

The Penetration–Explosion Effects of Differently Distributed Inactive/Active Composite Shaped Charge Jets

Abstract:An analysis of the penetration–explosion (PE) effects of four distributions of inactive/active composite jets shows that a well-designed inactive/active double-layer liner can promote composite jet damage. Penetration experiments were then carried out for shaped charge jets having a single inactive (Cu) liner or an inactive/active (Cu/Al) double-layer liner with variable liner height. The behaviors and firelight patterns of the different jets were captured by high-speed photography. The perforation, deformation area, and deflection were measured for each plate, showing that the Cu/Al jets have stronger PE effects. Numerical simulation shows that the tip of the composite jet generated from the full-height liner is only Cu, whereas for the other jet, from the double-layer liner, Cu is almost wrapped entirely by Al.

Numerical Simulation of Multifunctional Projectile Penetrating Reinforced Concrete Target Plate Based on Sensor Data Acquisition

Abstract:The main material of a type of multifunctional warhead is energy-containing material, which mainly relies on the projectile's own kinetic energy to hit the target plate to achieve the function of penetrating reinforced concrete, so it needs the bullet material to have high strength and be able to withstand the high overload when penetrating reinforced concrete. At present, the composite energy-containing material structure with Al, Zr, Ti, and other materials as PTFE-based reducing agents is the mainstream direction of research on high-strength energy-containing materials. LS-DYNA is used to establish a simulation model to simulate and analyze the tapping power. The relationship curve between material strength and attack depth is established and compared with the experimental data of traditional steel material attack ammunition to finally determine the strength limit of energy-containing material compared with traditional attack ammunition. The simulation results show that the composite energy-containing material multifunctional projectile can accomplish the tapping task of penetrating 1.2 m reinforced concrete under the premise of ensuring that the percentage of W powder is not higher than 80%. This study has a certain reference value for the selection of energy-containing materials for multifunctional warheads. For the low-velocity penetration below 400 m/s, the effect of frictional resistance of the head as well as the sidewall on the penetration depth can be ignored, but the overload curve when considering the sidewall friction is more realistic. Using a combination of experimental and theoretical methods, the influence of the projectile material on the mass erosion of high-speed kinetic energy projectiles was studied, and the Jones erosion model based on the thermal melting principle was improved. Based on the cavity expansion theory, the calculation method of the shape evolution of the bullet head was established. The comparison with the experimental results shows that the improved model is applicable to different types of soft and hard materials and can accurately calculate the mass erosion amount, erosion depth, and shape evolution of the bullet head.

Abstract:With the continuous improvement of various armor protection technologies, the armor protection performance has increased significantly, and then the damage performance requirements of armor-piercing ammunition have also increased. In order to improve the penetration ability of the liner, a new three-layer liner structure is designed in this paper. The jet forming process was simulated by AUTODYN software. The mechanism of shaped jet forming of three-layer liner was studied. The reason why the penetration depth of three-layer liner was higher than that of ordinary liner was explained. The influence of three-layer liner on the propagation of detonation wave and the change of pressure when detonation wave acted on liner were found, which provided a new idea for improving the penetration depth of jet. The influence of liner material, cone angle and stand-off on jet forming and penetration was also studied by orthogonal optimization experiment, and the structural parameters with the best penetration performance were obtained. The results show that the pressure at the convergence point increases first and then decreases during the formation of the jet of the three-layer liner. The pressure at the convergence point when the three-layer liner material is from low impedance to high impedance from the outside to the inside is much larger than the pressure at the convergence point from high impedance to low impedance. When the three-layer liner material is Al 2024-Copper–Tantalum from the outside to the inside, the pressure at the convergence point of the three-layer liner at different times is higher than that of the double-layer liner and the single-layer liner. Reasonable matching of different impact impedance materials in the three-layer liner can greatly improve the pressure value of the detonation wave acting on the cone liner. The maximum pressure at the convergence point on the axis is 39.10 GPa, which is 22.00% higher than that of the double-layer liner at the convergence point, and 53.03% higher than that of the single-layer liner at the convergence point. The orthogonal design test scheme is simulated and analyzed. The penetration depth is taken as the observation index, and the range analysis is adopted. The results show that the material matching of the three-layer liner has the greatest influence on the depth of the jet penetrating the target plate, followed by the cone angle of the three-layer liner. Relatively speaking, the stand-off has the least influence on the result. Reasonable matching of materials with different impact impedances in the three-layer liner can maximize the penetration depth of the jet into the target plate.

Abstract:Nothing might perhaps orient us quicker in our subject matter than perusal of what Hippolyte Marie Bernheim (1840-1919) (who was a contagionist himself and an authority on epidemic diseases before he became famous as a psychotherapist) had to say in 1877 concerning Jacob Henle, the teacher of Robert Koch. Henle lives in our minds and textbooks as the man who ‘‘produced the first clear statement of the idea of a contagium animatum,’’ who fought a bold vanguard action. To Bernheim the situation appeared as follows: ‘‘The serious observers recognized the emptiness of these fantastic concepts. Towards the middle of the century the doctrine of the contagium animatum was generally abandoned as a product of the imagination, lacking scientific foundations. Among medical leaders Henle was perhaps the last who defended in 1853 with strong determination the doctrine of the contagium vivum which he had defended already in 1840 with great logical vigor. Yet the parasitary doctrine has during the last 10 years regained considerable credit in public opinion as the result of new research and more positive findings.’’ It becomes thus obvious that what to us appears a vanguard action, impressed Henle’s contemporaries rather as a rearguard action, the last gallant defense of a dead hypothesis. That the theories of contagion and the contagium animatum appeared old and obsolete to many in the first half of the 19 century is easily seen from the following examples: Trotter speaks contemptuously in 1804 of the ‘‘relicts of the old animalcular hypothesis of contagion.’’ ‘‘Alpha’’ states in the Lancet in 1832 that certainly not within the last fifty years have any diseases been added to the list of the contagious ones. Parkes states in 1849: ‘‘During the last sixty years, however, the study of several diseases imperfectly known to the older physicians has added so many new facts to our knowledge of the several specific epidemic diseases, that the strict contagion theory has been insensibly undergoing alteration, until in the present day it tends to become merged in a higher generalization.’’ C.F. Riecke states in 1859 that the contagious doctrine has made no progress in centuries, and recent research has reversed the whole old authoritarian building of the contagion doctrine. Even a modern author, Major Greenwood, feels that Henle’s essay ‘‘is worth reading, but not better worth reading than a book published in 1546 and written by a Veronese physician, Hieronymus Fracastorius.’’ And Charles Singer, who has been a most indulgent and sympathetic historian of animate contagionism, states that, except for a small school at the beginning of the 18 century, no real progress was achieved between Fracastorius and Pasteur. Abstract:Analyses presented in the article were carried out in order to characterize the main parameters of the shaped charge jet formed due to detonation of the PG-7VM warhead. As opposed to the previously published studies in which rolled homogeneous armored steel was mainly used as a target, in the current work the warhead penetration capability was determined against more contemporary high-hardness (500 HB) ARMSTAL 30PM steel armor with precisely determined mechanical properties. The research included experimental depth of penetration tests and their numerical reproduction in the LS-Dyna software. Special attention was paid to factors that could perturbate the shaped charge jet formation process and under- or overestimate its penetration capability. For this reason, warheads were X-ray inspected for structural discrepancies (voids or air inclusions in explosive, misalignment between the body, explosive, and liner, or lack of contact between the explosive and the liner) and properties of materials (explosive, targets, and most important warhead components) were analyzed before the experiments. The numerical model of the warhead was defined more accurately than in previously published studies, since it was based on the real grenade dimensions and its technical documentation. Thanks to this, the depth of penetration of the target made of ARMSTAL 30PM armored steel plates by the shaped charge jet formed from the PG-7VM warhead obtained by numerical simulation was consistent with the experimental results and equaled 278 mm and 280 mm, respectively. The difference between the experimental and numerical value was smaller than 1%, which confirms that the developed methodology of modeling allows users to properly reproduce the PG-7VM shaped charge jet formation and target penetration processes. A verified numerical model of the shaped charge jet penetration into a steel target was used to determine depth of penetration in function of stand-off distance for the PG-7VM warhead. A maximum depth of penetration of about 317 mm was obtained for the stand-off distance of 360 mm, which may indicate the potential direction of modernization of warheads.
