Abstract:Sleep is responsible for maintenance and regulatory functions in human physiology. Insufficient sleep has been associated with cardiovascular disease, weight gain, obesity, inflammation, and morbidity. University students are at high risk under normal circumstances of stress and anxiety due to extracurricular demands, competing pressures on student time, long study hours, and financial concerns. The COVID 19 pandemic has disrupted normal college students' lives adding stresses such as lost jobs and family responsibilities such as serving as caregivers, which disproportionally affect minority and rural student. This study aimed to assess the correlation of sleep disorders in New Mexico State University students during COVID 19 with selected variates including base demographics (e.g., gender, age, etc.), lifestyle metrics (e.g., employment status, discipline, class, etc.), living arrangements (e.g., housing type, number of children, etc.), alcohol and tobacco use, vaccination status, family COVID status, and family vaccination status. Single- and multi-factor logistic regressions were performed to analyze the data on the students. Qualtrics software was used to collect data on demographics and sleep disorders. R software was used for data analysis. Correlations were found between sleeping less, sleeping more, and disturbed sleep among several covariate categories. For all three responses, being married (sleeping less: OR = 0.342, 95% CI = 0.181-0.642, sleeping more: OR = 0.265, 95% CI = 0.111-0.591; disturbed sleeping: OR = 0.345, 95% CI = 0.182-0.650), frequency of feeling sleepy-very often (OR = 16.87, 95% CI = 6.571-47.434; OR = 8.393, 95% CI = 3.086-25.298; OR = 13.611, 95% CI = 5.409-36.975) and change in diet- quality decreased (OR = 7.304, 95% CI = 3.615-15.270; OR = 5.250, 95% CI = 2.309-12.558; OR = 4.181, 95% CI = 2.145-8.359) were all significant correlated to change in sleeping behavior. Other correlations were found among covariates and sleep changes. Several covariates were determined to be correlated with the effect of COVID-19 on sleeping.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unparalleled impact on college students. Following the initial and abrupt shutdown of campuses in March 2020, several investigators assessed the immediate effects on University students. Early reports found that college students reported a higher prevalence of anxiety and depression, sedentary behavior, and sleep problems. Most were conducted outside the U.S. Data from U.S. college students are critical to identify which areas are should receive resources and interventions as the U.S. continues to experience exponential COVID cases along with continued remote learning, social restrictions and/or lockdowns. Methods Students enrolled in the Spring 2020 semester (18 years of age +) were invited to participate in an online survey (April – May 2020). A final sample of 491 completed the entire survey (length ~45 minutes) which asked about sleep quality, psychological stress, depression, and exercise.Paired t-tests were conducted to compare pre-COVID and during COVID data. Results There were significant differences in sleep onset latency (26.44 ± 23.53 min vs 32.06 ± 26.88 min; t = -3.81, P < .001), sleep duration (7.30 ± 1.45 hours vs 7.63 ± 2.07 hours; t = -2.23, p = 0.027) and overall sleep quality (6.29 ± 3.29 vs 7.44 ± 3.86; t = -7.26, p < .001), as well as depression scores (IDS no sleep questions) (5.61 ± 4.18 vs 17.59 ± 5.45; t = -54.9, P < .001). There was no difference in perceived stress (28.03 ±5.27 vs 28.39 ±5.53, t = -1.49, p = .138). Exercise (vigorous, moderate and walking) all decreased with regards to days and time spent, (all P’s < .001), whereas minutes sitting significantly increased (426.50 ± 239.88 vs 542.26 ± 249.63, p < .001). Conclusion These data empirically support the claim that the pandemic is having a significant negative impact on physical and mental health among college students. In the best of times, college students have irregular sleep patterns and significant depression, but these behaviors are worsened under government restrictions. These findings underscore the need to prioritize prevention and intervention of modifiable behaviors, especially if the pandemic extends into 2021. Support (if any):

Abstract:The current study tested a longitudinal mediation model throughout the COVID‐19 pandemic focused on whether students' housing instability stress and food/financial instability stress at the beginning of the pandemic in spring 2020 (T1) informed sleep dissatisfaction and duration in fall 2020 (T2) and, in turn, physical and mental health in spring 2021 (T3). Further, we tested whether relations varied based on students' ethnic‐racial backgrounds. Participants included 879 Asian, Black, Latine, Multiracial, and White emerging adult college students (Mage = 19.95, SD = 0.33) from a large public university in the mid‐Atlantic region of the United States who attended college during the COVID‐19 pandemic and completed surveys about their experiences. Findings indicated a significant mediation process, such that T1 housing instability stress predicted greater T2 sleep dissatisfaction and, in turn, less physical health, greater depressive symptoms, and greater anxiety symptoms at T3. Additionally, T1 food/financial instability stress was significantly associated with less T2 sleep duration but was not, in turn, associated with any T3 outcomes. Findings did not vary by students' ethnicity/race. Results highlight that sleep dissatisfaction is an important factor that accounts for relations between COVID‐19 stressors predicting mental and physical health outcomes throughout the pandemic.

In vitro and in vivo antiplasmodial activity of oxyresveratrol and artonine isolated from two Artocarpus plants in Indonesia.

Abstract:Antiplasmodial activity of two compounds, oxyresveratrol and artonin E isolated from A. dadah and A. rigida, respectively, were evaluated. The in vitro antiplasmodial activity was done on the chloroquine-resistant strain of P. falciparum 3D7, while the in vivo antiplasmodial assay was done on Swiss mice breed which were infected by P. berghei. The two compounds tested showed very high in vitro activity with IC50 value of 0.05 and 0.2 µg/mL for oxyresveratrol and artonin E, respectively. However, by contrast in the in vivo activity assay, oxyresveratrol has an ED 50 of 10.26 mg/kg, while the artonin E was not able to be determined.

Abstract:As a public health emergency, COVID-19 has a continuous impact that cannot be ignored. College students’ mental health and sleep quality have always been the focus of society's attention. The impact of COVID-19 on it and ways to improve it need more attention. This review searched the empirical studies of databases such as Google Scholar through the literature reading method and found that college students' mental health and sleep quality have suffered because of COVID-19. However, social support can play a protective role in it. In comparison to people with low social support, those with high social support are less likely to have mental illness and have higher sleep quality. The results in this review serve as a foundation for improving college students’ psychological and sleep problems in the future. The period of college is an important stage in the development of individual psychology and socialization. During this period, college students experience the role transition from juvenile to adult. Therefore, in this special period, society must take notice of the psychological and sleep problems of college students, and to improve them through scientific methods.
Sleep duration change among adolescents in Canada: Examining the impact of COVID-19 in worsening inequity

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess if adolescent sub-populations in Canada (i.e., based on race/ethnicity, sex/gender, socioeconomic status, and urbanicity groups) experienced a larger change in sleep duration and guideline adherence between 2019 and 2020 (pre-pandemic) and the 2020-2021 (mid-pandemic) school years. Methods: Longitudinally linked data from 2019 to 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 2020-2021 (mid-pandemic) of a prospective cohort study of secondary school students (M = 14.2, SD = 1.3 years, N = 8209) in Canada were used for analyses. Regression modelling tested the main effects of race/ethnicity, sex/gender, socioeconomic status, and urbanicity on changes in sleep duration as well as adherence to Canada's 24-h Movement Guidelines for sleep (8-10 h/night). Interactions between identity variables (race/ethnicity or sex/gender) and other main effect variables were subsequently tested. Results: Females gained more sleep (4.5 [1.5, 7.5] min/day more) and increased guideline adherence (AOR = 1.16 [1.04, 1.30] than males on average. Asian race/ethnic identity was associated with less sleep gain than White identity -10.1 [-19.4, -0.8], but not guideline adherence. Individuals in large urban areas gained less sleep and adhered less to guidelines than individuals from any other level of urbanicity (-21.4 [-38.5, -4.2] to -15.5 [-30.7, -0.2] min/day). Higher individual SES scores were associated with greater sleep gain (linear trend: 11.16 [1.2-21.1]). The discrepancies in sleep gain and guideline adherence between males and females were significantly modified by race/ethnicity and urbanicity. Discussion: Increases in sleep duration may be one of the few benefits to adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic but were not equally distributed across sub-populations. Efforts to promote better sleep adherence may need to account for sex/gender differences, especially in less urbanized areas and certain racial/ethnic groups.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Sleep disturbances are linked to detrimental health outcomes, including mental health and cardiovascular health. A bidirectional relationship between depression and sleep health is well documented in the literature. However, little is known regarding which sleep health dimensions is associated with depression. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between depression and multiple sleep health dimensions; more specifically sleep duration and insomnia symptoms among US adults from January to December 2020. Methods We analyzed data from the 2020 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) conducted among a representative sample of 31, 568 adults. First, we used binary logistic regression models to examine the association between self-reported diagnosis of depression and insomnia variables. Then, a multinomial regression assessed the association between depression symptoms and sleep duration. Our models statistically adjusted for sociodemographic factors (age, sex, marital status), health risk behaviors (smoking and alcohol use status), race/ethnicity, general health condition. Results The mean age was 53.50 [±18.04] years. Women represented 54% of the sample and twice as likely to report depression symptoms (67.51 vs 32.49, p< 0.001) relative to men. Binary logistic regression indicated that participants with symptoms of depression had higher odds of having difficulty staying asleep (OR:1.58; 95%CI: 1.43-1.74, p<.0001), difficulty falling asleep (OR:1.46; 95%CI: 1.30-1.62, p<.0001), and feeling unrested (OR:1.70; 95%CI: 1.50-1.93, p<.0001) respectively. Multinomial logistic regression showed that participants with symptoms of depression reported higher odds of having both short sleep (≤ 6 hours) (OR: 1.10; 95% CI: 1.0-1.21, p=0.0424) and long sleep (> 9 hours) (OR: 1.72; 95% CI: 1.50- 2.0, p<.0001). Conclusion Our research is among the first to confirm strong associations between depression and several dimensions of sleep in the US general population during US COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings underline the importance of sleep health in treating depression as the nation battles the current mental health crisis. Abstract:Background: The prevalence of sleep disorders among medical students was high during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, fewer studies have been conducted on sleep disorders among medical students after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated the prevalence and factors influencing sleep disorders among Chinese medical students after COVID-19. Methods: A total of 1,194 Chinese medical students were included in this study from 9th to 12th July 2023. We used the Self-administered Chinese scale to collect the demographic characteristics. In addition, we used the Chinese versions of the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), the Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess subjects' depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders, respectively. The chi-square test and binary logistic regression were used to identify factors influencing sleep disorders. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was utilized to assess the predictive value of relevant variables for sleep disorders. Results: We found the prevalence of sleep disorders among medical students after COVID-19 was 82.3%. According to logistic regression results, medical students with depression were 1.151 times more likely to have sleep disorders than those without depression (OR = 1.151, 95% CI 1.114 to 1.188). Doctoral students were 1.908 times more likely to have sleep disorders than graduate and undergraduate students (OR = 1.908, 95% CI 1.264 to 2.880). Conclusion: The prevalence of sleep disorders among medical students is high after COVID-19. In addition, high academic levels and depression are risk factors for sleep disorders. Therefore, medical colleges and administrators should pay more attention to sleep disorders in medical students after the COVID-19 pandemic. Regular assessment of sleep disorders and depression is essential.
Mental well-being and sleep quality among vocational college students in Sichuan, China during standardized COVID-19 management measures

Abstract:Purpose: This research investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental well-being and sleep quality of students in higher vocational colleges in Sichuan, China, identifying key factors influencing their psychological health during this period. Methods: Between January and February 2022, a comprehensive survey was conducted among students from several higher vocational colleges in Sichuan, utilizing a randomized selection approach to involve 3,300 participants. Data were collected through direct interviews executed by skilled interviewers. Results: Out of 3,049 valid responses, a significant number reported experiencing symptoms of poor mental health, anxiety, depression, and insomnia, with prevalence rates of 21.2%, 9.7%, 14.1%, and 81.9%, respectively. Factors contributing positively to mental health and sleep included a higher family economic status, reduced stress from the pandemic, and decreased online activity. Conversely, lack of physical activity post-pandemic, disruptions to education and employment, and deteriorating relationships emerged as negative influencers. Interestingly, a lack of pre-pandemic mental health knowledge acted as a protective factor against insomnia. Conclusion: The ongoing management of COVID-19 has notably influenced the psychological and sleep health of vocational college students, driven by economic, emotional, lifestyle, and educational factors. The findings underscore the necessity for targeted interventions to address these challenges effectively.

Abstract:COVID-19 has spread throughout the world, resulting in significant morbidity, mortality, and negative psychological effects among general population. However, university students are particularly vulnerable in terms of mental health. The present study evaluated the association between mental health, quality of sleep, aggression, and physical activity in university students in Mexico after 1 year of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico, including a gender-sensitive analysis. Participants (935 university students) completed an online questionnaire which collected information regarding demographic data, psychological distress (IES-R scale), depression, anxiety, and stress (DASS-21), aggressiveness Buss-Perry Aggressive Questionnaire, sleep quality (PSQI) and physical activity (IPAQ-S). Findings showed that female students showed significantly higher scores in psychological distress, anxiety, stress scores and sleep quality, as compared to male students. By contrast, male students showed significantly higher scores on aggressiveness than female students. In addition, on physical activity, females performed significantly higher MET-min/week on moderate and high levels. Finally, liner regression model accounted for approximately 73.5% of the variance in DASS-21 scores, with the body mass index, IES-R, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and IPAQ subscales, emerging as significant individual (positive) predictors. Therefore, the pandemic affected female and male students differently. Female students reported more psychological distress, anxiety, and stress while male students reported higher aggressiveness. The differences observed may be due to physiological differences, the response to stress, and differences in sensitivity to life events.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Sleep disparities are well-documented in the population. Rarely are multiple dimensions of sleep experience evaluated on a national level, however. Even more novel is the implication that these differences are partially explained by mental health disparities. Methods Data from the Sleep In America Poll included a population-level sample of US adults. N=1042 adults provided complete data. Sleep health metrics included weekday and weekend bedtime and waketime, time in bed, and sleep duration, perceived sleep need, sleep debt (sleep need – duration), and days/week of: feeling well-rested, difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, sleep impacting daytime function, daytime sleepiness, and taking sleep medication. Covariates included age, sex, education, household income, and PHQ9 depression score (without the sleep item). Linear regression analyses examined sleep variable as dependent variable and race/ethnicity (Non-Hispanic White, Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino or Asian/Other) as independent variable, adjusted for covariates. Secondary analyses examined race/ethnicity-by-depression interactions. Results In population-weighted, adjusted analyses, compared to non-Hispanic Whites, Blacks/African-Americans reported 0.78hr delayed weekend waketime (95%CI: 0.14,1.43) an additional 0.49 days/week of daytime sleepiness (95%CI: 0.05,0.93), 0.47 fewer days/week taking sleeping medications (95%CI: -0.80,-0.14), 0.41hr perceived sleep need (95%CI: -0.74,-0.10), and 0.51hr weekday less sleep duration (95%CI: -0.87,-0.15). Hispanics/Latinos reported 1.05 days/week difficulty staying asleep (95%CI: -1.42,-0.67) and 0.38 fewer days/week taking sleep medications (95%CI: -0.70,-0.07). Asians/others reported 0.73 fewer days/week with trouble staying asleep (95%CI: -1.26,-0.19) and 0.51 fewer days/week taking sleep medications. Significant group-by-depression interactions were seen for weekday and weekend bedtime, weekday time in bed, days/week well rested, perceived sleep need, weekday sleep duration, and sleep debt. Stratified analyses showed that Blacks/African Americans and Asians/Others especially reported worse sleep health in the presence of higher depression scores, compared to Non-Hispanic Whites. Conclusion Several dimensions of sleep health were disproportionately experienced across race/ethnicity groups in the US. In particular, worse sleep health in Blacks/African-Americans and Asians/Others was further impacted by depression symptoms. Future work should further explore the role of mental health disparities in sleep health and mental health interventions may reduce sleep disparities. Support (if any)

Mood and Sleep Quality in Peruvian Medical Students During COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract:Introduction: The prolongation and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to an uncertain and devastating panorama in many populations, and the evidence shows a high prevalence of mental health problems in medical students. The objective was to evaluate the association between mood disorders and sleep quality (SQ) in Peruvian medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 310 medical students from a private university in Peru. The SQ was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while mood disorders were evaluated using the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). All information was collected by online surveys and then analysed in the R programming language. Results: The SQ results measured by PSQI were poor in 83.9% of the medical students. In the Poison regression analysis, the results of the bivariate analysis in men show that all mood disorders found the prevalence of poor SQ. However, in the multivariate analysis only stress (PRa=1.30; 95% CI, 1.08-1.57; P<0.01) and anxiety (PRa=1.34; 95% CI, 1.09-1.56; P <0.01) increased the prevalence of poor SQ. Women had a similar pattern in bivariate analysis, whereas in multivariate analysis, only severe stress (PRa=1.15; 95% CI, 1.01-1.29; P <0.05) increased the prevalence of poor SQ. Conclusions: This study allows us to observe the consequences that the COVID-19 pandemic is having on medical students in Peru. It also revealed a population group vulnerable to poor quality of sleep and bad mood, which in the future will impact on health. It is suggested to educate medical students about the importance of proper sleep hygiene and the consequences of poor sleep hygiene practices.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction To address the growing sleep deficiency epidemic in college students, more research is needed on recent factors that might affect sleep, such as the digital media use in this young adult population. Furthermore, sleep and the use of digital media can be heavily influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study is to examine the use of digital media during the pandemic, and its relationship with sleep disturbance, social isolation, physical and mental health in college students. Methods An online survey was sent out to college students enrolled in an urban university. Validated questionnaires including PROMIS (Sleep Disturbance, Global Mental Health, Global Physical Health, Social Isolation), Nighttime Media Usage, and Internet Addition Test were included in the survey. In addition, focus groups were conducted with a subsample of survey respondents to elicit a comprehensive understanding of how digital media use in daily life influences sleep during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data collection was conducted during June to December 2020. Results A total of 358 students completed the online survey. Sleep disturbance was significantly related to greater digital media use for recreational purposes two hours before bedtime (62.6±28.1 minutes, r=0.110, p=0.046), and a higher frequency of playing games (r=0.148, p=0.007) and using social media after going to bed (r=0.142, p=0.10). Sleep disturbance was significantly associated with social isolation (r=0.251, p<0.001), poor global physical health (r=-0.186, p<0.001) and mental health (r=-0.376, p<0.001), and lower GPA (r=-0.167, p=0.004). Additionally, seven focus groups were conducted in a total of 32 students, suggesting that the increase in free time from the COVID-19 pandemic led to greater digital media use, compromising sleep duration and quality. With the increase of screen time also came feeling of guilt and anxiety which often led to greater awareness and self-control around media use. Conclusion Nighttime digital media use during the challenging pandemic time has a significant impact on poor sleep, which may lead to decreased academic performance, greater social isolation, and poor physical and mental health in college students. Effective interventions targeting digital media use are needed to improve sleep in this population. Support (if any):

Abstract:Background: The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on sleep quality, insomnia, anxiety, stress, fatigue and active coping in the United States. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using a publicly available database taken from the Boston College COVID-19 Sleep and Well-Being Dataset. We have selected the most recent data that included information about sleep quality and other measures, including insomnia, anxiety, stress, fatigue and coping, collected between 22 February–8 March 2021. Results: A total of 476 subjects were included in the analysis. The mean (SD) age of the study population was 38.8 (17.8) years, and there were more females (85%) than males. The population had a mean (SD) score of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) of 6 (3.2), with 65% having the prevalence of poor sleep quality (defined as PSQ ≥ 5; n = 311). The mean (SD) score for Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) was 6.9 (5.2), with 55 subjects (11.5%) having clinical insomnia (defined as ISI ≥ 15); of whom 9% had severe clinical insomnia. There were positive correlations between PSQI and ISI (r = 0.76, p < 0.001), PROMIS fatigue scale (r = 0.53, p < 0.001), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) (r = 0.46, p < 0.001), and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) (r = 0.44, p < 0.001). The PSQI was inversely correlated with the John Henryism Active Coping Scale (JHACS) and memory scale. In the multivariate regression model, JHACS, ISI, fatigue, PSS and GAD-7 were significant predictors of PSQI, and these variables accounted for 62% of the variance of PSQI, adjusted for age and gender. Conclusion: An important contribution to the literature is made by this research, which demonstrates the significant prevalence of poor sleep quality and its association with insomnia and other mental and physical well-being. It also underlines the need to prioritise policy and public health efforts to address sleep issues that have substantial health and economic effects for both individuals and the population at large.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Sleep alterations are common in college students, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sociodemographic factors may predict these alterations in this population. OBJECTIVE: To identify the sociodemographic factors and health characteristics associated with the number of hours of sleep of college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study carried out with 244 university students from a multicampi public university in the State of Bahia, Northeast Brazil. Data collection was performed online and participants answered a specific questionnaire to assess sleep hours, sociodemographic and health variables. RESULTS: Significant associations were observed between hours of sleep and older students (odds ratio adjusted –ORaj: 3.75; 95% Confidence Interval –CI: 1.81–7.75; p < 0.01), attending the final semesters (ORaj: 1.85; 95% CI: 1.05–3.25; p < 0.03), and who reported having some disease (ORaj: 2.18; 95% CI: 1.05–4.50; p < 0.03) with greater chances of getting less sleep. However, those who used tobacco (ORaj: 0.08; 95% CI: 0.01–0.45; p < 0.001) were likely to have more hours of sleep per night. CONCLUSION: Sleep restriction was common among participating college students, which has likely intensified due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its restrictions. This encourages specific public health actions, contemplating the health and hours of sleep of this population.

Abstract:This study aimed to assess potential disparities in pandemic-related stress associated with gender identity, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation among college students. We used the 2021 Spring American College Health Association (ACHA)-National College Health Assessment (NCHA) data collected at one large, southeastern university in March of 2021. The sample (n = 659) included 18–32 year-old students who self-identified as cisgender (cis) men, cis women, and transgender/gender nonbinary (TGNB). The majority of students reported being extremely or very concerned with several pandemic-related outcomes, eg, uncertainty regarding the future. In addition, 47% of students reported witnessing racial/ethnic discrimination as a result of the pandemic, and 43% of students reported increased stress due to the pandemic. For the majority of measures, the negative impact of the pandemic was significantly higher among cis women and/or TGNB students relative to cis men, racial/ethnic minorities relative to non-Hispanic (NH) white students, and sexual minorities relative to heterosexual students. Among diverse racial/ethnic groups, experiencing racial/ethnic discrimination as a result of the pandemic was most commonly reported by NH Asian/Asian American (AAA; 18%) and NH black/African American (BAA; 14%) students. Our findings reinforce the importance of needs assessment and future monitoring of mental health and well-being among college students, especially minority students, as they are more likely to be severely impacted by the pandemic. In addition, the study revealed that substantial numbers of students witnessed discrimination against racial/ethnic minorities as a result of the pandemic, suggesting that there is a need for the implementation of additional programs to promote equity, equality, and inclusion among all individuals.
Sleep quality and mental health during COVID-19: the role of distress tolerance

Abstract:The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has negatively impacted psychological health for many. This study aimed to investigate if distress tolerance, an individual's perceived or actual 'capacity to withstand negative psychological states', helps to explain the relationship between sleep and mental health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. College students (N = 187) completed questionnaires using an online survey platform between 6 April 2020, and 6 June 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to examine the indirect effect of distress tolerance on the relationship between sleep quality and mental health. Distress tolerance partially accounted for the relationship between sleep quality and perceived stress but did not help to explain the association between sleep quality and depression or anxiety. Two components of distress tolerance, absorption and appraisal, helped to explain the relationship between sleep quality and all mental health outcomes. These findings help explain how distress tolerance relates to mental health when sleep is negatively impacted. Prospective designs replicating these findings are needed and future research may inform how psychological interventions could target distress tolerance in the context of poor sleep, especially during major stressors.
