Construction of Nursing Undergraduate Education Curriculum Modules Based on Competency

Abstract:Objective To construct nursing education curriculum modules to evaluate the competency for nursing undergraduate students. Methods Convenient sampling method was performed from September to December 2014 to select 7 experts from 1 medical university in Tianjin and 2 medical universities in Beijing to attend the conference. Nursing undergraduate education curriculum modules were constructed through the live discussion and distribution of expert opinion questionnaire within the competency comprehensive evaluation index system for nursing graduates. Results The active coefficient of experts was 100%; the coefficient authority (Cr) was 0.95; and the coordination coefficient (W) was 0.37 (P<0.001) . 12 knowledge modules and 5 curriculum modules were constructed. Conclusions The 5 constructed curriculum modules of this study can provide references for curriculum revision based on competency. A modified Delphi study on establishing a curriculum content structure for the leadership and management competency cultivation for future nurse managers in China

Abstract:Background It is critical to train future nursing managers in advance for the prospective development of healthcare organizations, but a widely recognized curriculum content structure for leadership and management competency development for nurturing future nurse managers was lacking in China. Objective To establish a curriculum content structure for the leadership and management competency cultivation for future nurse managers in Chinese healthcare setting. Methods A modified Delphi study was conducted. 22 experts who have in-depth knowledge of nursing leadership and management from 4 main geographical regions in China were included. The initial curriculum content structure was constructed based on a previous qualitative study and two team meetings. Subsequently, a two-round Delphi survey was conducted with 22 panelists in the first round and 19 in the second round. Scores of importance and textual comments were collected and used to judge the achievement of consensus. Results After the two-round Delphi process, consensus was reached, as each item was rated ≥4 by 84.21–100% of the experts and each one had a coefficient of variance (CV) ≤ 0.174. The finalized curriculum content contains 9 modules and 27 items. Conclusions This study formed a curriculum content structure for leadership and management competency training for nurses preparing for managerial roles, which contribute to the establishment of a nursing management talent pipeline to meet the needs of healthcare institutions for contemporary nurse managers.
Construction of a nurses' interpersonal communication knowledge system: A Delphi study

Abstract:Background Effective communication is essential for nursing students to provide safe patient care. Many communication consensuses focus on physician-associated communication rather than nurses' interpersonal communication. However, studies on developing a systematic and comprehensive communication knowledge system for nursing students are scarce. Objectives To explore the teaching content and teaching framework of nurses' interpersonal communication, construct a systematic and scientific knowledge system for interpersonal communication among nursing students and provide a theoretical basis for the training of nurses on interpersonal communication. Methods Based on the literature review and comparative research, this study explored the theoretical basis and basic principles of constructing an interpersonal communication knowledge system for nurses. Moreover, a correspondence questionnaire on nurses' interpersonal communication knowledge systems was initially constructed to clarify the related teaching content and structure. Finally, the Delphi method was used to establish the index of the nurses' interpersonal communication knowledge system according to the principle of expert selection and inclusion criteria. Results The Delphi method included 26 experts from nursing education, clinical nursing, nursing management and other fields for consultation. The effective response rate of the letter inquiry was 96.3 % in the first round and 100 % in the second round. The judgment basis, familiarity and authority coefficient of expert consultation were 0.907, 0.862 and 0.884, respectively. In the two rounds of inquiry, the coordination coefficients of the total questionnaire were 0.228 and 0.302, which was statistically significant ( P < 0.001). Thereafter, a wheeled model of nurses' interpersonal communication knowledge system with 3 primary indicators, 13 secondary indicators and 58 tertiary indicators was constructed, which included professional ethics and attitude, communication knowledge and communication skills. Conclusion Literature and comparative research methods along with Delphi expert consultation were used to construct a scientific and systematic knowledge system of nurses' interpersonal communication. The research methods were feasible, and the results were scientific and reliable, thereby providing a basis for the education of nurses' interpersonal communication among nurses and the compilation of related teaching materials in China and globally. Furthermore, special attention should be paid to the comprehensive cultivation of nursing students' professional ethics and attitude, communication knowledge and communication skills.

Developing a core competency framework for advanced practice nursing in mainland China: a sequential exploratory study

Abstract:Background: Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) have been highly valued and an integral part of the health care system. Development and establishment of new APN roles is a complex process that has resulted from a wide variety of reasons, key component is a lack of a competency map delineation and role evaluation. Currently, however, competence framework has not been compared at an international level. In mainland China, APN have been introduced in some organizations but their competency domains have not yet been clearly defined, this study aimed to identify the core competencies for advanced practice nursing. Methods: This study was performed in two phases: first, in-depth and semi-structured individual interviews with 46 participants from key stakeholders were carried out followed by a qualitative content analysis, then an item pool of core competencies was constructed by extracting data from the first phase and the results from previous studies, scales and documents; second, a Delphi technique was conducted with the participation of 28 experts from 7 areas of China to form the final core competency framework for advanced practice nursing. Results: Through the qualitative phase, the core competency framework with six domains and 70 items emerged and then entered into the Delphi phase. Twenty-eight of 30 experts finished 2 rounds of Delphi approaches. The final core competencies for advanced practice nursing consisted of six domains with 61 items, including direct clinical nursing practice, research and evidence-based nursing practice, professional development, organization and management, mentoring and consultation, and ethical/legal practice. Conclusion: This core competency framework consisted of six domains with 61 items can be used in competency-based education to cultivate advanced practice nurses as well as competency level assessment.

Abstract:A total of 1123-week old Wistar rats were separated into eight groups: control groups I – IV (n = 62) and propranolol-treated groups V – VIII (n = 50). Propranolol hydrochloride (100 mg/kg) was present in the rats' drinking water until 26 weeks of age and growth rates of all groups were monitored daily until 53 days of age and thereafter every third day throughout the study. Chronic oral propranolol administration produced growth retardation (P < 0.05) in both sexes that was reversible when treatment was discontinued. Organ weights were generally smaller in propranolol-treated rats; on the other hand, the ratio of most organ weights per 100 g of body weight was greater in propranolol-treated rats (especially females). The radio-immunological determination of plasma growth hormone showed increased concentrations of growth hormone in propranolol-treated rats (P < 0.05), whereas hypothalamic somatostatin content was not significantly changed. The results showed that the retarded growth rate following chronic oral propranolol administration to growing rats was independent of changes in plasma growth hormone and hypothalamic somatostatin concentrations, and that retardation was entirely reversible when the β-adrenoceptor antagonist was discontinued.
Construction and application of the core competence course training system for infectious disease specialist nurses

Abstract:Objectives: This study aims to construct and apply a training course system which was scientific and comprehensive to foster the core competence of infectious disease specialist nurses. Design: A two-round Delphi consultation survey was carried out to collect feedback from experts on constructing the training course system of core competence for infectious disease specialist nurses. Besides, a non-randomized controlled experimental study was adopted to check the application effect of the courses. Methods: This study adopted a series of methods including group discussion, theoretical analysis and Delphi consultation to draft the training course content of core competence of infectious disease specialist nurses. Twenty-one Chinese experts were invited to participate in the Delphi consultation from November 2021 to December 2021. From October 2022 to January 2023, a total of 105 infectious disease specialist nurses from two training bases were selected by the convenience sampling method, of which the nurses in one training base were the control group and the nurses in the other training base were the observation group. The observation group was trained by the constructed core competence training course. Questionnaire evaluation was used to compare the core competence of infectious disease specialist nurses and the training effect. Results: The experts, regarded as the authorities on the subject, were highly motivated in this study. Besides, they reached a consensus on the results. The final training course system of core competence for infectious disease specialist nurses focused on 5 competence modules and was composed of 12 categories of courses with 66 classes and corresponding objectives. The core competence scores of the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group after training (P < 0.05), which proved the training system can effectively enhance the core competence of infectious disease specialist nurses. Conclusions: The research methods embodied scientific and precise properties. The course system was comprehensive in content and reliable in results. It could serve as a reference for training infectious disease specialist nurses.
Developing a Professional Competence Framework for the Master of Nursing Specialist Degree Program in China: A Modified Delphi Study.

Abstract:Background: The urgency of ensuring adequate professional competence in clinical nursing practice is evident. However, there is little formal professional competence framework for the education of master's degree students in nursing specialist programs in China. Objective: To develop a professional competence framework for the Master of Nursing Specialist (MNS) degree program in China.Design: A modified Delphi study. Participants: An expert panel discussion was held with 12 experts, and Delphi rounds were conducted with 24 experts.Methods: A literature review and an expert panel discussion were conducted to develop an initial competence framework. A two-round Delphi survey was employed to obtain a consensus on the framework through either an online or paper questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The consensus threshold was set according to the mean (>= 4.0), coefficient of variation (< 0.25), and consensus level of agreement (>= 70 %). Results: A consensus on seven domains and 54 items of the professional framework for the MNS degree program was achieved. The framework domains included clinical practice (12 items), professional attitude (8 items), collaboration and communication (5 items), professional development (8 items), research (7 items), education (7 items), and administration (7 items).Conclusion: The professional competence framework offers guidelines for MNS degree programs in China. Future research should focus on imbedding these competences in MNS degree programs to prepare qualified advanced practice nurses.
Determining the core competencies for international postgraduate nursing students in internship programs: A delphi study

Abstract:Aim To determine the core competencies of clinical internships for international postgraduate nursing students undertaking a two-year professional program in China. Background Clinical internship is an important part of nursing education and is the cornerstone for the future training of nursing professionals. However, in terms of providing a basis for the training and assessment of international postgraduate nursing students undertaking a two-year professional program in China, their core competencies of clinical internships have not yet been sufficiently determined. Methods Focus group interviews and a two-round Delphi method were conducted. The preliminary list of core competencies was determined based on a scoping review and focus group interviews. Subsequently, experts provided suggestions for modifications to the core competencies in two rounds of the Delphi survey. The response rate (RR), composite reliability (Cr), coefficient of variation and Kendall coefficient of indices were calculated. Results Twenty experts completed two rounds of Delphi expert consultation and reached consensus on five first-level indices and 13 s-level indices with 27 connotations. The RR values for the two rounds of consultation were 100 %, the Cr values were 0.853 and 0.873 and the Kendall coordination coefficients were 0.134–0.250 (p < 0.05). Conclusion The core competencies identified in this research can provide a basis for further training international postgraduate nursing students undertaking a two-year professional program in China through internship programs. This research also provides a reference for effectively evaluating and improving clinical programs.

Abstract:Objective:To explore the establishment of the core curriculum for the doctor of nursing in China and the construction and design of mixed teaching model.Methods:Experts from the Chinese Medical Foundation (CMB) institutions were invited to participate in the two rounds of theme project seminar.According to the discussion outline,to explore the suitable core curriculum of doctor of nursing for the current stage of nursing in China,as well as the inter-school mixed teaching model for the core curriculum.Results:A total of three core curriculum of the doctor of nursing were established:nursing philosophy and theoretical construction,advanced qualitative research,and advanced evidence-based nursing.The mixed teaching model for the core curriculum of the doctor of nursing was mainly composed of two teaching parts: online teaching and flipping classroom.The contents,style,evaluation,and online platform of online teaching were constructed and designed,as well as the contents,style,and evaluation of flipping classroom.Conclusions:The establishment of the core curriculum and the mixed teaching model for Chinese doctor of nursing could improve the comprehensive level of doctoral education of nursing.
An Innovative Evaluation in Fundamental Nursing Curriculum for Novice Nursing Students: an Observational Research

Abstract:Background: < Fundamental Nursing > is the first specialized curriculum for nursing students, laying a foundation for nursing education. < Fundamental Nursing > includes many important basic nursing skills, which suggests the traditional examination could not evaluate how well students learn. Since the OSCE (objective structured clinical examination) developed, it has been used among newly graduated nurses, postgraduate nursing students and achieved some success. OSCE might be a better way to evaluate and reflect students' fundamental nursing skills and comprehensive abilities, although few studies have put it into practice. Objectives: To build an examination model relating to < Fundamental Nursing > based on OSCE, and put this examination model into practice, and then evaluate the reliability and validity of this examination model. Design: This study is to design an examination model based on literature and teaching purposes of < Fundamental Nursing > . A quantitative descriptive survey methodology was used to obtain the students' outcome and the views of the students on the process and outcome. Settings: This study was conducted in the nursing school of one comprehensive university in Beijing, China. Participants: 99 undergraduate nursing students in second year participated in this study. Methods: The OSCE consisted of 4 interactive simulated patient stations, 2 operating stations without standard patients, 2 theoretical stations. We designed 4 standardized process-based case scenarios and corresponding scripts pertinent to each station. 4 standard patients and 8 teachers of < Fundamental Nursing > were recruited, trained and evaluated before the implementation of objective structured clinical examination. Results: The average score of overall fundamental nursing skills was 90.51 +/- 4.00. The Cronbach alpha was 0.665, demonstrating the OSCE is reliable. The content validity of each station varies from 0.90-1, and the criterion validity was promising (R = 0.661, p = 0.000). Also, most students were in favor of OSCE to evaluate in < Fundamental Nursing > . Conclusions: The OSCE is a reliable and valid assessment tool in < Fundamental Nursing > . Meanwhile, it could inspire students' critical thinking and promote students' communication skills. Through successive application of OSCE in nursing education from the very beginning, it might also have some potential effect on the clinical performance.

Abstract:Objective:To analyze the schooling model of foreign-concerned nursing education in university of Chinese Medicine and to provide the reference for the construction of this specialty. Method:Questionnaire was developed based on the theoretical study, literature review and focus group panel meeting. Experts from 23 Schools of Nursing in the universities of Chinese Medicine were consulted. Result:The Competency of Standard for Bachelors in Nursing were developed, as well as the advice on curriculum design. Conclusion:In order to ensure the quality of education,the educational mission should be standardized, competency of undergraduate students should be deifned, core curriculum should be added, language learning and practice ability should be consolidated and the ability of foreign-concerned nursing practice should be enhanced. This research may provide the comprehensive suggestions for schooling model development of this specialty.
Improving the curriculum for a community nursing training program in Guangzhou City, China

Abstract:In China, community nurses do not have systematic training, and the nursing education curriculum focuses on clinical nursing both in vocational school and high school. Most nurses work at a hospital, and almost all community nurses lack systematic knowledge about community nursing. A training program for community nurses in Guangzhou City has been conducted since 2003. The training curriculum has evolved over the years, but is not standardized. This article describes research on improving community nurses' basic knowledge and practice skills. We modified the curriculum with a questionnaire and a modified Delphi method. First, 318 participating nurses and instructors were queried in December 2012. Then 22 experts modified the training program based on the results of the questionnaire and implementation since 2013. After 4 years, we followed up with the new participating nurses to evaluate the curriculum.

Abstract:Abstract Background Simulation has been widely used in the teaching of pre-licensed nursing students and has shown positive results. However, there is limited evidence regarding the application of a comprehensive nursing course with simulation for Associated Degree in Nursing (ADN)-prepared nurses with different work experience times. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the satisfaction, self-confidence, and perceptions of scenario simulation among Chinese nurses in a comprehensive nursing skills course in an RN-BSN program. Methods A single-group post-test approach was used in the current study. Participants that completed a comprehensive nursing skills course with simulation in an RN-BSN program were enrolled. Results The mean satisfaction, self-confidence, educational practice, and simulation designs scores were rated highly. Self-confidence ( p = 0.002), active learning ( p = 0.020), collaboration ( p = 0.030), support ( p = 0.008), and problem-solving ( p = 0.007) were significantly higher among students with more work experience compared to those with less experience. Then, four themes were analyzed: enthusiasm for learning, ability to experience different feelings during role-play, hybrid teaching format, and simulation fidelity. Conclusions Results demonstrated that a comprehensive nursing skills course with simulation might improve Chinese ADN-prepared nurses’ satisfaction and self-confidence in learning. Nurses with work experience gave a high rate to the scenario simulation, demonstrating that simulation can be widely applicable for students with different characteristics. Finally, the teaching strategy in the present study can be applied to more RN-BSN programs.

Abstract:Abstract Aim and objective This study was to establish an index system for the evaluation of Chinese infectious disease specialist nurses’ core competence. Background The index system for the evaluation of infectious disease specialist nurses’ core competence has not been established. Design A two-round Delphi survey was conducted to seek opinions from experts about the index system for the evaluation of infectious disease specialist nurses’ core competence. Methods The study adopted several research methods, including literature retrieval, theoretical analysis and qualitative research. Based on the above method, the draft of core competence evaluation index system of infectious disease specialist nurses was constructed. A Delphi survey was used for the study of 30 infectious disease experts from 8 provinces and cities around China. A modified recommendation for the Conducting and Reporting of Delphi studies (CREDES) was also used to guide this study. A STROBE checklist was used. Results The Core Competence Evaluation Index System of Infectious Disease Nurses is composed of 6 primary indicators, namely, Nursing Abilities for Infectious Diseases, Infection Prevention and Control Abilities, Responsiveness to Infectious Diseases, Professional Development Abilities, Communication and Management Abilities, and Professionalism and Humanistic Accomplishment, 16 secondary indicators and 47 tertiary indicators. The authority coefficient, judgment coefficient and familiarity degree of Delphi experts were 0.923, 0.933 and 0.913 respectively. Conclusions The evaluation index system of core competence of diseases specialist nurses is scientific and reliable. It can be reference for future training and assessment of Chinese infectious disease specialist nurses. Relevance to clinical practice Infectious disease specialist nurses are the main force for infectious disease nursing. Their core competence is related to the quality of infectious disease nursing and treatment. The core competence of the nurses is important for identification of training strategies and can be regarded as reference for nurse assessment and promotion. The construction of the index system is based on the consensus of infectious disease experts, which is not only helpful to standardize the training strategies and selection standards of infectious disease specialist nurses in the future, but also meet the society’s needs in clinical infectious disease nursing.

Abstract:Teaching resource of nursing students play an important role in improving clinical performance, while there is a little know and dearth of the access and development criteria or guidance of teaching resources for nursing undergraduates.To develop the admission and development criteria of education resources for nursing undergraduates, and to explore and determine its composition and connotation.A cross-sectional survey has been used.A total of 22 Chinese nursing schools and affiliated teaching bases (hospitals and community health centers).A total of 20 nursing experts were consulted to develop the questionnaire of admission and development criteria of teaching resource for nursing undergraduates in China, and then 285 valid experts from 22 Chinese nursing schools and affiliated teaching bases (hospitals and community health centers) conducted the questionnaire survey to evaluate experts' consensus rate and view on the composition and connotation of the developed criteria.There were 6 domains and 43 items included in the admission and development criteria of teaching resource for nursing undergraduates, which domains included educational budget and allocation of resources, infrastructure, clinical teaching bases, books and information services, educational experts, and educational exchanges. The experts' consensus rate was more than 90.2%.The standard is helpful to guide the future admission and development of teaching resource for nursing undergraduates, and favor the education quality improvement of nursing undergraduates.

Abstract:To establish the role of the barrier material in spin-polarized tunneling, the authors directly measure the sign and magnitude of the tunneling spin polarization in Al/barrier/ferromagnet junctions with different barriers using the Zeeman-split superconducting d. of states of the Al electrode. It is shown that clear Zeeman splitting is difficult to obtain with heavy metal oxide barriers, such as HfOx and TaOx, due to a large spin-orbit scattering rate most likely induced by the heavy atoms at the Al/barrier interface. Junctions with MgO barriers, however, show clear Zeeman splitting and a tunneling spin polarization of +30% with both Co and Fe as the top electrode, a no. which significantly differs from +40% found for our AlOx junctions. Abstract:Objective To explore the solutions to the deficiency of nursing graduates' curriculum resources and its insufficient utilization.Methods Theoretical study,survey and action research were carried out to construct the sharing system of nursing graduates' curriculum resources by the cooperation of several schools.And its outcomes were verified through three rounds of teaching operation.Results This sharing system improved the utilization rate of excellent teaching resources in different schools,optimized the course arrangement for sharing schools,enhanced the teaching quality and promoted their academic relationships.Conclusion This sharing system can effectively pool the regional excellent nursing teaching resources,reduce the duplicating investment of curriculum construction and improve Shanghai nursing graduates' curriculum system in a relatively short period.

Abstract:Aim: To construct an evaluation index system for the core competence of nurses in sleep medicine specialties. Background: Specialized nurses in sleep medicine must handle treatment, nursing, and management well, which requires nurses to have excellent competence in knowledge, skills, and ability. However, a competency evaluation system for sleep medicine nurses has not been established in China. Methods: We used a literature review and an expert meeting to establish a draft indicator system. Subsequently, two rounds of correspondence were conducted with 27 experts from 5 provinces using the Delphi method to solicit their opinions on the core competency evaluation indicators for sleep medicine nurse specialists and to qualitatively evaluate the experts' scores. The consensus was defined in advance as a mean score of 4.0 or above, with at least 75% agreement among participants. In this way, the final indicator framework was determined. Results: The final evaluation indexes of the core competencies for sleep medicine Nurse Specialists included 6 first-level indexes (Practical ability, Theoretical Knowledge, Critical thinking, Communication and coordination, Nursing Management, and Professional Development), 16 s-level indexes, and 64 third-level indexes. The effective response rates of the two expert consultation rounds were 100%. The expert authority coefficients were 0.878 and 0.865 in the first and second rounds of consultation, respectively. In the second round of consultation, the first, second, and third indexes of Kendall's coefficient of concordance were 0.373, 0.351, and 0.286, respectively (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The core competence evaluation index system for sleep medicine nurses established in this study is scientific and reliable and can provide a theoretical reference for the training, assessment, and evaluation of sleep medicine nurses in the future. Implications for nursing management: The evaluation index system of sleep medicine nurses' core competence will provide an effective practical framework for nursing management to evaluate, train, and examine the core competence of sleep medicine nurses.
